Groundwater is considered an important source of water aid for human consumption. However, this water can be contaminated by impurities, such contamination spots that might reach the water tables. The aim of this study was to investigate the quality of shallow groundwater in Flores neighborhood, located in the municipality of Benevides, within Belém metropolitan region, State of Pará, Brazil. Recommendations described in Standard Methods for Examination of Water and Wastewater were followed at the time to determine physical-chemical parameters such as potential hydrogen (pH), electrical conductivity (EC), total dissolved solids (TDS), apparent color, turbidity, total hardness (TH), ions and trace elements. Multivariate statistical analysis has shown that most predictive water-quality parameters set for human consumption are associated with natural events involving weathering and leaching processes. Nevertheless, parameters of nitrate, phosphate, EC, TDS and pH are also influenced by anthropic conditions in the surroundings, mainly phosphate and nitrate ions. Therefore, it can be concluded that shallow groundwaters in Flores neighborhood are unsuitable for human consumption, making it necessary for municipal public authorities to take action to solve the problem of water shortage in the borough, thus preventing the population from use those shallow groundwaters, as their consumption can bring health problems. ABSTRACT The limited temporal completeness and taxonomic accuracy of species lists, made available in a traditional manner in scientific publications, has always represented a problem. These lists are invariably limited to a few taxonomic groups and do not represent up-to-date knowledge of all species and classifications. In this context, the Brazilian megadiverse fauna is no exception, and the Catálogo Taxonômico da Fauna do Brasil (CTFB) (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/), made public in 2015, represents a database on biodiversity anchored on a list of valid and expertly recognized scientific names of animals in Brazil. The CTFB is updated in near real time by a team of more than 800 specialists. By January 1, 2024, the CTFB compiled 133,691 nominal species, with 125,138 that were considered valid. Most of the valid species were arthropods (82.3%, with more than 102,000 species) and chordates (7.69%, with over 11,000 species). These taxa were followed by a cluster composed of Mollusca (3,567 species), Platyhelminthes (2,292 species), Annelida (1,833 species), and Nematoda (1,447 species). All remaining groups had less than 1,000 species reported in Brazil, with Cnidaria (831 species), Porifera (628 species), Rotifera (606 species), and Bryozoa (520 species) representing those with more than 500 species. Analysis of the CTFB database can facilitate and direct efforts towards the discovery of new species in Brazil, but it is also fundamental in providing the best available list of valid nominal species to users, including those in science, health, conservation efforts, and any initiative involving animals. Abstract Healthcare workers present an increased risk of contagion for the SARS-CoV-2 virus due to their labor exposure. Here, we describe the clinical, laboratory, and immunological characteristics of healthcare workers, before vaccine application, exposed to SARS-CoV-2-infected patients. We collected sociodemographic, clinical, and laboratory information from 50 professionals who worked during the COVID-19 pandemic at the Clinical Hospital of the Northwest in Brazil. The results showed that most workers are women, over 50 years old, and worked as nursing technicians. Approximately 56% of workers were positive for a previous infection by RT-PCR and/or anti-SARS-CoV-2-immunoglobulin tests. Increased levels of hematocrit, neutrophils, NK lymphocytes, and fibrinogen, were found in positive healthcare workers, suggesting a light inflammatory status. The immunological findings showed an increase in IL-17 production and a Th2/Th17/Th22 profile followed by high serology for anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgM and IgG. Those data reveal the importance of studies with healthcare workers to investigate if the continuous exposition to the virus may result in chronic activation of the immune system and/or pulmonary inflammation in this target group. Abstract This study aimed to evaluate the antioxidant potential of the Coffea arabica Lineu (L.) leaf extract and its effects on platelet aggregation of dyslipidemic rats. The extract was obtained by the percolation of C. arabica L. leaves in hydroethanolic solution 70% (v/v). The mass spectrometry FIA-ESI-MS² suggested the presence of chlorogenic acid, rutin acid, and quinic acid. The DPPH• radicals scavenging capacity was demonstrated (IC50 = 0.06 mg/mL). The extract was administered to rats by gavage (300 mg/kg/day) for 56 days. Dyslipidemia was induced by administering Triton WR-1339 (300 mg/kg body weight) on the 54th day. On day 56, blood was collected by puncturing the abdominal aorta artery and the aortic artery was removed. Lipid profile, markers of renal and hepatic injury, lipid peroxidation, and platelet aggregation tests were carried out. The ingestion of extract reduced the lipid peroxidation (aorta and plasma) and platelet aggregation in dyslipidemic rats. The extract did not affect markers of renal and hepatic function as analyzed in this study, suggesting neither impaired liver nor kidney function in these animals. Therefore, our results demonstrate that the extract of leaves of C. arabica L. show antioxidant potential in vitro and in vivo as well as anti-platelet aggregation in dyslipidemic animals.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are an important environmental issue and the identification of new biocatalysts for an efficient biodegradation of these compounds is essential for bioremediation. Therefore, fungi strains isolated for the first time from a tropical peat at Santo Amaro das Brotas (Brazil) were studied for fluoranthene biodegradation. Fusarium sp. AC-7, Penicillium sp. AC-1 and Penicillium sp. AC-6 were isolated using fluoranthene as sole carbon source. All strains were tested for biodegradation of 100 mg L−1 fluoranthene during 14 and 28 days. After 28 days of biodegradation, 64 ± 3, 60 ± 4 and 51 ± 2% biodegradation was observed for Penicillium sp. AC-1, Penicillium sp. AC-6 and Fusarium sp. AC-7, respectively. Analysis of the obtained compounds enabled the identification of four metabolites, which were common to the three employed strains: anthrone, anthraquinone, 9-methoxyanthracene and cyclopropa[1]phenanthrene. It is important to note that control experiments were performed. The obtained results clearly demonstrated the efficiency of tropical peat fungi in the transformation of fluoranthene. These findings showed the potential of tropical peats for isolation of fungi and indicated that these strains can be applied for bioremediation processes of areas contaminated with fluoranthene and other PAHs.

Abstract The use of creep feeding for preweaning piglets is important to improve the performance of the piglets. The objective of this experiment was evaluate the effect of using or altering the position of piglet’s creep feeder during lactation on piglet’s performance and on behavior of piglets and sows kept in a hot climate environment. Forty-five sows and their litters at 10 days of lactation were randomly distributed into three treatments: front feeder (FF) - near the side of the sow’s head; back feeder (BF) - near the side of the rump of the sow; and no feeder (NF). All piglets were weighed individually to evaluate the average weight, weight gain and coefficient of variation of the weight. Behavior assessments of the piglets and sows were recorded in 3 period. At 15 and 21 d, piglets of the FF treatment were heavier (P ≤ 0.0001) than piglets of the other treatments. At 10-21d piglets of FF treatment had 76.2% less belly nosing behavior than the NF piglets (P=0.015). The treatments had no impact on behavior of the sows. The creep feeders positioned in the front of the farrowing crate increased piglet growth rate and decreased frequency of belly nosing behavior.

Carvacrol (CV) and carvacryl acetate (CVA) are bioactive compounds that have anthelmintic action and the nanoencapsulation may be an alternative to potentialize their efficacy. The aim of this work was to nanoencapsulate CV and CVA using chitosan/gums and evaluate cytotoxicity and the anthelmintic activity. A 24 factorial experimental design was performed to determine the influence of gum type (arabic or chichá), amount of surfactant and the number of layers in the nanoencapsulation degree. CVA and CV presented encapsulation efficiency (EE) optimum values of 90 and 20% (experiments 8 and 9), respectively. The monolayer and bilayer formulations presented maximum size of 479 and 811 nm, respectively. Nanoencapsulated CVA (nCVA) with bilayer coating and higher surfactant levels showed good thermal stability and no toxicity. In vitro kinetics for nCVA with chitosan/chichá gum showed slower release profiles than nCVA with chitosan/gum arabic, with 50% release after 30 and 20 h, respectively. CVA and nCVA at a concentration of 150 µg mL−1 reduced the motility of H. contortus adult nematodes by 100 and 91.7%, respectively. In summary, nCVA chitosan/chichá gum showed high encapsulation efficiency, favorable release rate and anthelmintic activity against H. contortus.

RESUMO A altura dominante de eucalipto pode apresentar forte autocorrelação espacial, sendo imprescindível investigar os métodos de interpolação na sua espacialização. Nesse contexto, o objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar métodos determinísticos e geoestatísticos na estimativa da altura dominante em povoamento de eucalipto. Em 14 talhões do gênero (377 hectares) foram avaliadas 233 unidades amostrais, obtendo-se as variáveis altura dominante e diâmetro a 1,30 m do solo. Os interpoladores espaciais avaliados foram os geoestatísticos (krigagem e cokrigagem ordinária) e determinísticos (inverso do quadrado da distância e polinôminio global do 10º grau). Ainda, aplicou-se a krigagem indicatriz para espacializar a probabilidade de locais com valores de altura dominante acima da média. Os resultados mostraram que a altura dominante de eucalipto apresenta-se com forte dependência espacial, sendo possível a sua espacialização tanto pela krigagem quanto cokrigagem ordinárias. Na presença da componente espacial, métodos determinísticos não são recomendados, em especial, os modelos polinomiais globais. A krigagem indicatriz viabiliza o mapeamento da probabilidade de uma determinada classe de produtividade ocorrer, subsidiando o planejamento da rotação florestal.
ABSTRACT The dominant height of eucalyptus can present strong spatial autocorrelation, being indispensable to investigate the interpolation methods in its spatialization. In this context, this study aimed to evaluate deterministic and geostatistical methods in estimating the dominant height in eucalyptus stands. In 14 management units of the genus (377 hectares), 233 sample units were allocated, obtaining the variables dominant height and diameter at 1.30 m of the soil. The spatial interpolators evaluated were geostatistics (kriging and ordinary cokriging) and deterministic (inverse of the distance square and global polynomial of the 10th degree). Furthermore, indicator kriging was applied to spatialize the probability of locations with above-average dominant height values. The results showed that the dominant eucalyptus height presents with a strong spatial dependence, being possible its spatialization by both ordinary kriging and cokriging. In the presence of the spatial component, deterministic methods are not recommended, especially the global polynomial models. Indicator kriging enables the mapping of the probability of a given class of productivity to occur, subsidizing forest rotation planning.

Resumo Este estudo apresenta o tratamento florístico das espécies de Vitaceae que ocorrem na Reserva Florestal Adolpho Ducke, Amazonas, Brasil. Coletas provenientes da Reserva Ducke foram analisadas a partir de exsicatas depositadas no herbário INPA. Foram registradas duas espécies do gênero Cissus para a reserva, Cissus erosa e C. verticillata subsp. verticillata. Apresentamos descrições das espécies, comentários taxonômicos, ilustrações, informação sobre hábitat, distribuição geográfica e uma chave de identificação para as espécies.
Abstract This study presents the floristic treatment for the species of Vitaceae occurring in the Reserva Florestal Adolpho Ducke, Amazonas, Brazil. Collections from the Reserva Ducke were analyzed from specimens deposited at the INPA herbarium. Two species of the genus Cissus were recorded, Cissus erosa and C. verticillata subsp. verticillata. We present species descriptions, taxonomic comments, illustrations, habitat information, geographic distribution, and an identification key for the species.

Abstract In this work is presented a hybrid bioinspired optimization technique that associates a General Regression Neural Network (GRNN) with the Multiobjective Bat Algorithm (MOBA), for the design and synthesis of the Frequency Selective Surfaces (FSS), aiming its application in data communication systems by diffusion of millimeter waves, specifically, in the IEEE 802.15.3c standard. The designed device consists of planar arrangements of metallizations (patches), diamond-shaped, arranged over a RO4003 substrate. The FSS proposed in this study presents an operation with ultra-wide band characteristics, its patch designed to cover the range of 40.0 GHz at 70.0 GHz, i.e., 30.0 GHz bandwidth and 60.0 GHz resonance. The upper and lower cutoff frequencies, referring to the transmission coefficient's scattering matrix (dB), were obtained at the cutoff threshold at −10dB, to control the bandwidth of the device.

Using niobium compounds as heterogeneous catalysts in biodiesel production is a promising methodology from economic and environmental viewpoints. However, the application of niobium catalysts still is a challenge due to the high temperatures and pressures for moderate biofuel yields. Therefore, easily handled and applied materials have been developed to optimize biofuel production, which is the goal of this study. Nb2O5 and ammonium niobium oxalate (AmNO) were activated in reflux and ultrasound-assisted system. Nb2O5 showed better activity under reflux, using methanol. The characterizations conclude that the Lewis-acid sites are determinant for higher conversion rather than surface area. AmNO has better activity also in the reflux system at 70 ºC, against 170 ºC for Nb2O5, reaching above 70% conversion. In addition, reactions in ultrasound-assisted systems are also appealing due to the lower time and temperature, with conversion rates above 40%. Both catalysts showed interesting results under milder conditions than those in the literature.

This work describes the removal of pesticides from water using activated and magnetized biochars produced from exhausted husk, and dry tannin from barks of black wattle (Acacia mearnsii De Wild.). These materials were characterized using chemical, spectroscopic, thermal, solid structure and surface area techniques. The activated and magnetized biochars were effective in removing the pesticides thiacloprid and thiamethoxam from both ultrapure water and Marcela Water Reservoir, Itabaiana, Sergipe State, Brazil. At the longest time examined, the amounts of thiacloprid and thiamethoxam adsorbed per gram of activated biochar adsorbent were 1.02 and 0.97 mg, respectively, while values of 0.73 mg (thiacloprid) and 0.40 mg (thiamethoxam) were obtained using magnetized biochar. A pseudo-second order model correctly described the kinetics of adsorption of both pesticides (R(2) ≥ 0.922). Desorption experiments revealed that the spent biochars could not be easily regenerated, which indicated that the forces holding the adsorbed fluid molecules to the solid surface were relatively strong.

Phytochemical investigation from carnauba (Copernicia prunifera) wax led to the identification of sixteen dammarane-type triterpenes, including thirteen new characterized as: (24R*)-methyldammara-20,25-dien-3α-ol and a mixture of alkyl (24R*)-methyldammar-25-en-20-ol-3β-carboxylates, together with three previously described triterpenes: carnaubadiol, (24R*)-methyldammara-20,25-dien-3β-ol and (24R*)-24-methyldammara-20,25-dien-3-one. Moreover, four fatty alcohols (eicosanol, docosanol, tetracosanol and hexacosanol) as well as four sterols (cholesterol, campesterol, stigmasterol, and sitosterol) were also obtained. These compounds were isolated using classical chromatographic methods and their structures were determined by spectroscopic and chemical methods.
