ABSTRACT Purpose To compare the introduction of consistencies during the period of complementary feeding of preterm and full-term newborns up to 12 months of life, as well as to evaluate the presence of oral motor dysfunction and its relation to difficulty in introducing food consistencies in these groups. Methods This is an observational, analytical, cohort study, with ambispective data collection, carried out at the Municipal Department of Health of Mafra, state of Santa Catarina, Brazil. The study sample consisted of 87 newborns, 41 full-term and 46 preterm. While data was collected, interviews were held with the mothers/guardians. The anthropometric assessment was carried out by a nutritionist by measuring body weight, length, and head circumference, followed by assessment of oral and functional motor skills by the adapted Clinical Evaluation Protocol of Pediatric Dysphagia (PAD-PED), assessment of breastfeeding and neuropsychomotor development, and assessment of the presence of maternal depression and psychological risk of children with up to 12 months of corrected age. Results We verified oral motor dysfunction in 15 newborns, in both groups, in the liquid consistency in the first assessment, persisting in two cases in the full-term newborns and in three cases in the preterm infants, in the last assessment for the solid consistency. Conclusion We observed no difference in the introduction of food consistencies between groups. Breastfeeding was more frequent in newborns in the first assessment and similar in other assessments. RESUMO Objetivo Comparar a introdução das consistências no período da alimentação complementar de recém-nascidos prematuros e recém-nascidos a termo até os 12 meses de vida, bem como avaliar a presença de disfunção motora oral e a sua relação com dificuldade na introdução das consistências alimentares nestes grupos. Método Trata-se de um estudo do tipo observacional, analítico, coorte, com coleta de dados ambispectiva, realizado na Secretaria Municipal de Saúde de Mafra - SC. A amostra do estudo foi constituída de 87 recém-nascidos, sendo 41 a termo e 46 prematuros. Na coleta de dados, foram realizadas entrevistas com as mães/responsáveis. ABSTRACT Purpose To systematically review the literature regarding the impact of prematurity on the transition of food consistencies in infants during the introduction of complementary feeding. Among the selected studies, a relationship between invasive oral interventions and feeding difficulties was observed for all assessed skills, with feeding difficulties being more frequent in infants with lower gestational age. RESUMO Objetivo: Verificar a prevalência e realizar a caracterização clínica das fissuras orais em uma amostra de pacientes com trissomia do cromossomo 18 no sul do Brasil. Métodos: Este foi um estudo transversal retrospectivo, realizado em um serviço de referência em genética clínica do sul do Brasil. A amostra inicial foi composta de 77 pacientes com diagnóstico no período neonatal de trissomia 18 atendidos no Serviço de Genética Clínica da Universidade Federal de Ciências da Saúde de Porto Alegre (UFCSPA). O diagnóstico dos pacientes foi confirmado por cariótipo e os atendimentos foram realizados durante sua internação na unidade de terapia intensiva (UTI) de hospital de referência no sul do Brasil para atendimento em pacientes malformados. O período abrangido foi de 1975 a 2020. Resultados: Durante o período do estudo foram atendidos, a maioria na UTI do hospital, 77 pacientes com diagnóstico de trissomia do cromossomo 18. Destes, 13 indivíduos foram excluídos por apresentarem dados incompletos. A amostra final foi de 64 pacientes, com idade média de 2,4 anos de vida, variando de um dia de vida a 16 anos, a maioria do sexo feminino. Com relação aos dismorfismos faciais identificados na amostra, três (4,68%) pacientes apresentavam fissuras labiais e dois (3,11%) fissuras labiopalatinas. ABSTRACT Objective: To verify the prevalence and perform the clinical characterization of oral clefts in a sample of patients with trisomy of chromosome 18 in Southern Brazil. Methods: This was a retrospective cross-sectional study, performed in a reference clinical genetic service in Southern Brazil. The initial sample consisted of 77 patients diagnosed in the neonatal period with trisomy 18 treated at the Clinical Genetics Service of a referral hospital at Federal University of Health Sciences of Porto Alegre (UFCSPA). The patients’ diagnosis was confirmed by karyotype and care was provided during their stay in the intensive care unit (ICU) of the hospital that is a reference in Southern Brazil for care for malformed patients. ABSTRACT Purpose to analyze the results of an instrument that aims to assist in the identification of feeding difficulties in children with Phenylketonuria (PKU), compared to children without the disease. Methods cross-sectional, controlled study with a convenience sample composed of patients with PKU and healthy individuals, matched for age and sex. The invitation to participate in the study was made through the dissemination of the research on social networks. The answers were provided by the guardians, 46 controls and 28 patients agreed to participate. In addition to these, 13 guardians of patients being followed up at an Outpatient Clinic for the Treatment of Inborn Errors of Metabolism were invited by phone call, and 12 accepted the invitation. All participants answered the Brazilian Infant Feeding Scale (in Portuguese Escala Brasileira de Alimentação Infantil (EBAI)) electronically. RESUMO Objetivo analisar os resultados de um instrumento que se propõe a auxiliar na identificação das dificuldades alimentares em crianças com Fenilcetonúria (PKU), em comparação a crianças sem a doença. Método estudo transversal, controlado, com amostra de conveniência composta por pacientes com PKU e por indivíduos hígidos, equiparados por idade e sexo. O convite para participação no estudo foi feito por meio de divulgação da pesquisa nas redes sociais. As respostas foram fornecidas pelos responsáveis, sendo que 46 controles e 28 pacientes participaram. Além desses, 13 responsáveis por pacientes em acompanhamento em um Ambulatório de Tratamento de Erros Inatos do Metabolismo foram convidados por ligação telefônica, sendo que 12 aceitaram o convite. Todos os participantes responderam a Escala Brasileira de Alimentação Infantil (EBAI) de forma eletrônica. Resumo O aleitamento materno é o primeiro alimento do bebê e a primeira forma de contato com a mãe, com a família e com a sociedade. Objetivo: Descrever ações de promoção do aleitamento materno desenvolvidas no atual cenário de distanciamento social. Metodologia: Trata-se de um relato de experiência de ações realizadas por um projeto de extensão no período de distanciamento social provocado pelo Coronavírus. Resultados: Foram produzidas 71 publicações sobre temas relevantes envolvidos com a amamentação e obtido um total de 734 seguidores no perfil do Instagram do projeto com alcance em torno de 1.191 pessoas. Discussão: Ressalta-se a importância de informações seguras sobre a prática de amamentar e acredita-se na importância de profissionais capacitados para incrementar a prevalência do aleitamento materno. Conclusão: Mesmo diante dos desafios frente à pandemia, o projeto conseguiu alcançar a sociedade além dos muros da universidade, bem como atingiu o objetivo de promover e proteger o aleitamento materno baseado em informações científicas.

Abstract Breastfeeding is the baby’s first food and the first form of contact with the mother, family, and society. Objective: to describe actions to promote breastfeeding developed in the current scenario of social distancing. Methodology: This is an experience report of the actions carried out by an extension project during the period of social distancing caused by the Coronavirus. Results: A total of 71 posts on relevant topics involved with breastfeeding were produced and a total of 734 followers were obtained on the project’s Instagram profile with a reach of around 1,191 people. Discussion: The importance of safe information about the practice of breastfeeding is emphasized, and the importance of trained professionals to increase the prevalence of breastfeeding is believed. Conclusion: even facing the challenges of the pandemic, the project managed to reach society beyond the walls of the university, and achieved its goal of promoting and protecting breastfeeding based on scientific information.

RESUMO Objetivo Investigar a associação entre a avaliação clínica e autopercepção da deglutição com a escala de incapacidade motora em pacientes com Esclerose Múltipla. Método Estudo transversal, prospectivo realizado com indivíduos com Esclerose Múltipla atendidos pelo ambulatório de Neuroimunologia de um hospital do sul do Brasil. Realizamos a revisão dos prontuários eletrônicos dos pacientes para extração do escore da última Expanded Disability Status Scale. Após a análise dos critérios de inclusão, e em consulta clínica, foram aplicados dois protocolos, o de autopercepção para o risco de disfagia, através do instrumento de equivalência brasileira do Eating Assessment Tool e a avaliação clínica da deglutição, com alimentos, através da escala Gugging Swallowing Screen. Os dados foram analisados através de tabelas, estatísticas descritivas e pelos testes: Teste de Associação Exato de Fisher e Teste Qui-quadrado para avaliar a associação entre os resultados das escalas aplicadas. Consideramos um nível de significância máximo de 5% (p<0,05). Resultados Foi possível observar que houve associação significativa entre os escores das escalas Gugging Swallowing Screen com a Expanded Disability Status Scale dos pacientes. Além disso, também se observou relação entre os resultados de ambos protocolos com a Expanded Disability Status Scale. Conclusão Os pacientes com Esclerose Múltipla deste estudo apresentaram disfagia orofaríngea. Houve associação entre os achados da avaliação clínica, do instrumento de autopercepção da deglutição e da escala de incapacidade motora em pacientes com esclerose múltipla.

ABSTRACT Purpose To investigate the association between the clinical evaluation and self-perception of deglutition with the motor disability scale in patients with Multiple Sclerosis. Methods It is a cross-sectional, prospective study that was conducted with individuals with Multiple Sclerosis treated by the Neuroimmunology outpatient clinic of a hospital in southern Brazil. We reviewed the electronic medical records of patients to extract the score from the last Expanded Disability Status Scale. After the analysis of the inclusion criteria, and in clinical consultation, two protocols were applied: one of self-perception for the risk of dysphagia, through the Brazilian equivalence instrument of the Eating Assessment Tool; and the clinical evaluation of swallowing, with food, through the scale Gugging Swallowing Screen. The data were analyzed through tables, descriptive statistics and the tests: Fisher's Exact Association Test and Chi-square Test to assess the association between the results of the applied scales. We considered a maximum significance level of 5% (p <0.05). Results It was possible to observe that there was a significant association between the scores of the Gugging Swallowing Screen scales with the Expanded Disability Status Scale of the patients. In addition, there was also a relation between the results of both protocols with the Expanded Disability Status Scale. Conclusion The patients with Multiple Sclerosis in this study presented oropharyngeal dysphagia, what was confirmed by the association between the clinical evaluation of swallowing and the results of the instrument of self-perception of swallowing and the motor disability scale.

RESUMO Objetivo verificar a eficácia da fonoterapia no retorno precoce da via oral em pacientes com disfagia pós-intubação orotraqueal. Métodos Ensaio clínico controlado, randomizado, duplo-cego, realizado por dois anos com pacientes de Unidades de Terapia Intensiva de um hospital. Os critérios de inclusão foram intubação orotraqueal>48 horas, idade ≥18 anos, estabilidade clínica e disfagia. Foram excluídos pacientes com traqueotomia, 4 a 7 pontos na Escala Funcional de Ingestão Oral (FOIS), distúrbios neurológicos. Os pacientes foram randomizados para grupo tratado (GT) ou grupo controle (GC) (dez dias de acompanhamento). O GT recebeu orientações, técnicas e manobras terapêuticas, exercícios vocais e miofuncionais orofaciais, introdução da dieta por via oral; o GC recebeu tratamento SHAM. Os desfechos foram progressão da ingestão oral, gravidade da disfagia e via alternativa de alimentação. Resultados Inicialmente foram avaliados 240 pacientes, desses 40 (16,6%) apresentaram disfagia. Trinta e dois pacientes preencheram os critérios de inclusão e 17 (53%) receberam terapia fonoaudiológica. A permanência da alimentação por sonda foi menor no GT (mediana de 3 dias) em comparação ao GC (mediana de 10 dias) (p=0.004). O tamanho do efeito da intervenção sobre o tempo de permanência com sonda nasoentéroica foi estatisticametne significativo entre os grupos (Cohen's d=1.21). O GT apresentou progresso nos escores FOIS em comparação ao GC (p=0.005). O GT também teve uma progressão nos níveis de gravidade do PARD (de disfagia moderada a leve) (p<0.001). Conclusão A terapia fonoaudiológica favorece uma progressão precoce da ingestão oral em pacientes pós-intubação com disfagia. Registro de Ensaio Clínico: RBR-9829jk.

ABSTRACT Purpose to verify the efficacy of speech therapy in the early return of oral intake in patients with post-orotracheal intubation dysphagia. Methods It was a double-blinded randomized controlled trial for two years with patients of intensive care units of a hospital. Study inclusion criteria were orotracheal intubation>48hours, age≥18 years old, clinical stability, and dysphagia. Exclusion criteria were tracheotomy, score 4 to 7 in the Functional Oral Intake Scale (FOIS), neurological disorders. Patients were randomized into speech treatment or control group (ten days of follow-up). The treated group (TG) received guidance, therapeutic techniques, airway protection and maneuvers, orofacial myofunctional and vocal exercises, diet introduction; the control group (CG) received SHAM treatment. Primary outcomes were oral intake progression, dysphagia severity, and tube feeding permanence. Results In the initial period of study, 240 patients were assessed and 40 (16.6%) had dysphagia. Of this, 32 patients met the inclusion criteria, and 17 (53%) received speech therapy. Tube feeding permanence was shorter in TG (median of 3 days) compared to CG (median of 10 days) (p=0.004). The size effect of the intervention on tube feeding permanence was statistically significant between groups (Cohen's d=1.21). TG showed progress on FOIS scores compared to CG (p=0.005). TG also had a progression in severity levels of Dysphagia protocol (from moderate to mild dysphagia) (p<0.001). Conclusion Speech therapy favors an early progression of oral intake in post-intubation patients with dysphagia. Clinical Trial Registration: RBR-9829jk.

RESUMO Objetivo Estimar a prevalência e fatores de risco para disfagia orofaríngea em indivíduos idosos hospitalizados por fraturas traumato-ortopédicas. Métodos Foram coletados dados sociodemográficos, incluindo comorbidades clínicas, autopercepção do desempenho de deglutição (Eating Assessment Tool) e identificação de risco nutricional (Mini Avaliação Nutricional). Para avaliar o sistema estomatognático e a deglutição, foram utilizados os protocolos Avaliação Miofuncional para Pessoas Idosas e o Volume Viscosity Swallow Test, compilados para composição do desfecho a partir da Functional Oral Intake Scale (FOIS). Resultados O estudo evidenciou que 58% dos indivíduos apresentaram restrições de consistências alimentares devido à disfagia orofaríngea (FOIS ≤ 6). Observou-se, também, risco de diminuição funcional entre aqueles com idade maior ou igual a 70 anos, com piores condições dentárias, diminuição da funcionalidade global, doenças neurológicas associadas e com percepção de alterações na deglutição. Conclusão Houve prevalência de disfagia orofaríngea em seis a cada dez indivíduos, sendo a fragilidade, idade avançada, múltiplas doenças e condições orais deficitárias os fatores de risco para a alteração, fatores estes que devem ser identificados para a prevenção de aspiração alimentar.

ABSTRACT Purpose To estimate the prevalence of and risk factors for oropharyngeal dysphagia in older adults hospitalized for orthopedic trauma fractures. Methods Sociodemographic data, clinical comorbidities, auto-perception of swallowing performance (Eating Assessment Tool) and identification of nutritional risk (Mini Nutritional Assessment) were collected. In order to evaluate the stomatognathic system and swallowing, the Orofacial Myofunctional Evaluation Protocol for older people and the Volume Viscosity Swallow Test protocols were used to assess the outcome through the Functional Oral Intake Scale (FOIS). Results 58% individuals presented dietary consistency restrictions due to oropharyngeal dysphagia (FOIS ≤ 6). A risk for functional decrease was observed among patients 70 years or older, with worse dental conditions, global functionality decreased, neurologic disorders and self-perception of swallowing changes. Conclusion The study observed a prevalence of oropharyngeal dysphagia in six out of ten individuals. Frailty, advanced age, multiple comorbidities and deficient oral conditions are risk factors that should be identified in order to prevent food aspiration.

RESUMO Objetivo: investigar protocolos utilizados pela Fonoaudiologia para avaliação da amamentação. Métodos: trata-se de uma revisão integrativa da literatura que objetiva sintetizar evidências disponíveis sobre a avaliação da amamentação no período de 2002 a 2015. Os critérios de inclusão foram artigos científicos que abordassem avaliação da amamentação realizada por fonoaudiólogos, publicados em inglês e português. Trabalhos que não apresentaram resumos na íntegra foram excluídos. Resultados: foram encontrados 140 estudos, dos quais 134 foram excluídos. As seis publicações restantes realizaram avaliação da mamada e foram incluídas neste estudo. Identificaram-se quatro instrumentos de avaliação da amamentação. Os artigos selecionados objetivaram avaliar o conhecimento das mães sobre amamentação e sua relação com a linguagem, a primeira mamada do bebê prematuro, descrever condições iniciais da amamentação, relacionar amamentação com oferta do copo/mamadeira e avaliar características orofaciais e amamentação. Os protocolos avaliaram aspectos do estado de consciência, comportamento e posicionamento do bebê, comportamento da mãe ao amamentar, características da mama, da pega e ordenha e condições após a amamentação. Conclusão: são escassos os estudos na Fonoaudiologia que utilizam protocolos padronizados e validados para avaliação da amamentação. O enfoque maior está na avaliação dos bebês prematuros. Sugere-se que novos estudos sejam realizados, especialmente com foco em validar instrumentos.

ABSTRACT Objective: to investigate protocols used by Speech Therapists to evaluate breastfeeding. Methods: this is an integrative literature review that aims to synthesize available evidence on the evaluation of breastfeeding, from 2002 to 2015. The inclusion criteria were scientific articles that approached breastfeeding evaluation performed by Speech Therapists, published in English and Portuguese. Papers that did not present summaries in their entirety were discarded. Results: a total of 140 studies were found, 134 being excluded. The remaining six publications evaluated breastfeeding and were included in the study with four instruments. The articles selected aimed at evaluating the mothers' knowledge about breastfeeding and its relation to language, the first feeding of the premature baby, describing the initial conditions of breastfeeding, relating breastfeeding to the cup/bottle supply and evaluating orofacial characteristics and breastfeeding. The protocols evaluated aspects of the infant's state of consciousness, behavior and positioning, mother's breastfeeding behavior, breast characteristics, latching and milking, and conditions after breastfeeding. Conclusion: there are few studies in Speech Therapy that use standardized and validated protocols for breastfeeding evaluation. The major focus is on the evaluation of preterm infants. It is suggested that new studies be performed, especially with a focus on validating instruments.

Abstract Introduction Dysphagia causes changes in the laryngeal and stomatognathic structures; however, the use of vocal exercises is poorly described. Objective To verify whether the therapy consisting of myofunctional exercises associated with vocal exercises is more effective in rehabilitating deglutition in stroke patients. Methods This is a pilot study made up of two distinct groups: a control group, which performed onlymyofunctional exercises, and an experimental group, which performed myofunctional and vocal exercises. The assessment used for oral intake was the functional oral intake scale (FOIS). Results The FOIS levels reveal that the pre-therapymedian of the experimental group was 4, and increased to 7 after therapy, while in the control group the values were 5 and 6 respectively. Thus, the experimental group had a statistically significant difference between the pre- and post-therapy assessments (p = 0.039), which indicates that the combination of myofunctional and vocal exercises was more effective in improving the oral intake levels than the myofunctional exercises alone (p = 0.059). On the other hand, the control group also improved, albeit at a lower rate compared with the experimental group; hence, there was no statistically significant difference between the groups post-therapy (p = 0.126). Conclusion This pilot study showed indications that using vocal exercises in swallowing rehabilitation in stroke patients was able to yield a greater increase in the oral intake levels. Nevertheless, further controlled blind clinical trials with larger samples are required to confirm such evidence, as this study points to the feasibility of conducting this type of research.

RESUMO Introdução A prematuridade pode afetar o desenvolvimento adequado do recém-nascido. Objetivo Avaliar o desempenho para a alimentação via oral em recém-nascidos prematuros, estimulados pela técnica treino de deglutição. Métodos A pesquisa ocorreu em uma unidade de terapia intensiva neonatal, no período de março a agosto de 2015. Trata-se de um estudo Quase Experimento de Série Temporal com 14 recém-nascidos pré-termo (RNPT), com idade gestacional corrigida entre 30-36 semanas. Foi aplicado o protocolo de avaliação da prontidão do prematuro para início da alimentação oral (pré e pós-treino de deglutição). O treino de deglutição ocorreu uma vez ao dia e, em média, durante seis dias consecutivos. Resultados Verificou-se melhora pós-estimulação, comparando-se os dados do protocolo pré-intervenção e pós-intervenção. Quanto aos níveis de habilidades de alimentação por via oral, 50% dos prematuros foram classificados como nível 4. A alimentação via oral foi iniciada, em média, 1 dia após o término do treino de deglutição; a sonda alimentar foi retirada em, aproximadamente, 7 dias após o início da via oral. Houve associação inversa limítrofe entre melhora no escore de prontidão e tempo de transição da via alternativa para a via oral total e associação inversa entre melhora no escore de prontidão e idade gestacional corrigida. Conclusão A intervenção com treino de deglutição possibilitou melhora na habilidade de alimentação em 50% da amostra, com início da alimentação via oral e obtenção da alimentação exclusiva via oral em um curto período de tempo, com prontidão para via oral em idades gestacionais precoces.

ABSTRACT Introduction Prematurity can affect proper development of a newborn. Purpose To evaluate performance of oral feeding in preterm infants stimulated by the swallowing training technique. Methods The study was conducted in a neonatal intensive care unit from March to August 2015. The study was developed as a Times Series Quasi Experiment with 14 preterm newborns (PTNB) with corrected gestational age between 30-36 weeks. The readiness to feed orally protocol for preterm infants (pre and post-swallowing training) was applied. Swallowing exercises were conducted once a day and on average for six consecutive days. Results Improvement post-stimulation was observed, comparing the pre-intervention and post-intervention protocol data. Regarding oral feeding skills, 50% of preterm infants were classified as level 4. Oral feeding commenced, on average, 1 day after the end of swallowing training; the gastric tube was removed approximately 7 days after beginning oral feeding. There was a borderline inverse relationship between improvement in the readiness score and transition time from tube to full oral feeding and an inverse relationship between improvement in the readiness score and corrected gestational age. Conclusion The intervention with swallowing training made it possible to improve feeding skills in 50% of the sample population, starting oral feeding and obtaining exclusive oral feeding in a short period of time, with oral readiness at early gestational ages.

ABSTRACT Purpose To associate the degree of biomechanical impairment in the swallowing process with the severity (National Institute of Health Stroke Scale – NIHSS) and type of neurological injury in patients post stroke. Methods A cross-sectional, descriptive study conducted with 42 patients (22 females), aged 65.7 years on average diagnosed with stroke. All patients underwent clinical neurological evaluation and application of the NIHSS in the first 48 hours after stroke. The swallowing function was evaluated using the Functional Oral Intake Scale (FOIS) and the Protocol for the Investigation of Oropharyngeal Dysphagia in Adults. The Fisher’s Exact Probability Test was used to assess the correlation between the degree of swallowing impairment and the severity (NIHSS score) and type of stroke. The study results were statistically analyzed at 5% significance level (p≤0.05). Results 92.9% of the patients presented ischemic stroke; 59.5% presented impairment of the anterior cerebral circulation. Statistically significant correlation was found between the neurological scale (NIHSS) scores and the swallowing impairment scale (p=0.016). Conclusion An association between stroke severity and oropharyngeal dysphagia severity was observed. A high proportion of patients with ischemic stroke with circulation affected in the anterior cerebral region presented severe oropharyngeal dysphagia. No statistically significant correlation was observed between the FOIS scale and stroke severity.

RESUMO: Objetivo: caracterizar o quadro de comprometimento da função da deglutição em pacientes com Síndrome de Wallenberg. Métodos: série de casos de sete pacientes, com diagnóstico dessa síndrome, encaminhados para avaliação fonoaudiológica. Para avaliação do grau de disfagia utilizou-se a escala Gugging Swallowing Screen e para avaliar o nível de ingestão oral utilizou-se a Functional Oral Intake Scale. Resultados: a média de idade foi de 60,57 anos; todos os sujeitos apresentaram alteração na função da deglutição de grau grave (71,42%) a moderado (28,58%); 85,71% necessitaram de Via Alternativa de Alimentação, sendo que, 71,43% eram alimentados exclusivamente por sonda nasoentérica; todos necessitaram de acompanhamento fonoaudiológico. Conclusão: este estudo concluiu que a disfagia orofaríngea na Síndrome de Wallenberg apresenta-se como um distúrbio de grau grave a moderado, sendo necessária a utilização de Via Alternativa de Alimentação na maioria dos casos.

ABSTRACT: Purpose: characterizing the impairment condition of the swallowing function in patients with Wallenberg Syndrome. Methods: case series of seven patients, with diagnosis of this syndrome, referred for phonological assessment. The Gugging Swallowing Screen scale was used to evaluate the level of dysphagia and the Functional Oral Intake Scale was used to evaluate the level of oral ingestion. Results: the mean age was 60.57 years; all subjects presented changes in the function of swallowing of severe degree (71.42%) to moderate degree (28.58%); 85.71% required Alternative Feeding Route, wherein, 71.43% were fed exclusively by nasoenteric tube; all subjects required speech therapy. Conclusion: this study concluded that oropharyngeal dysphagia in Wallenberg Syndrome presents itself as a disorder of serious to moderate degree, being the use of Alternative Feeding Route required in most cases.
