ABSTRACT The limited temporal completeness and taxonomic accuracy of species lists, made available in a traditional manner in scientific publications, has always represented a problem. These lists are invariably limited to a few taxonomic groups and do not represent up-to-date knowledge of all species and classifications. In this context, the Brazilian megadiverse fauna is no exception, and the Catálogo Taxonômico da Fauna do Brasil (CTFB) (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/), made public in 2015, represents a database on biodiversity anchored on a list of valid and expertly recognized scientific names of animals in Brazil. The CTFB is updated in near real time by a team of more than 800 specialists. By January 1, 2024, the CTFB compiled 133,691 nominal species, with 125,138 that were considered valid. Most of the valid species were arthropods (82.3%, with more than 102,000 species) and chordates (7.69%, with over 11,000 species). These taxa were followed by a cluster composed of Mollusca (3,567 species), Platyhelminthes (2,292 species), Annelida (1,833 species), and Nematoda (1,447 species). All remaining groups had less than 1,000 species reported in Brazil, with Cnidaria (831 species), Porifera (628 species), Rotifera (606 species), and Bryozoa (520 species) representing those with more than 500 species. Analysis of the CTFB database can facilitate and direct efforts towards the discovery of new species in Brazil, but it is also fundamental in providing the best available list of valid nominal species to users, including those in science, health, conservation efforts, and any initiative involving animals. Since the composition of honey varies with the species of bee as well as flowering and geographical aspects, this study aimed to evaluate the physicochemical and bioactive properties of Apisand stingless bees’honey from the Brazilian Caatinga. Samples of different species of Apis mellifera L.Meliponini (Melipona subnitida, Frieseomellita varia, Melipona mandacaia, Plebeia sp.) and Apis mellifera L.werecollected from honey producersin the state of Rio Grande do Norte. Honey from A. mellifera and stingless bees showed physicochemical differences in some parameters, especially in moisture, free acidity, HMF, water activity, sugars and electric conductivity. There were no differences in color between honeys from A. mellifera and stingless bees. Honeys fromPlebeia sp., F. varia and A. mellifera showed higher antioxidant capacity followed by honeys fromM. mandacaia and M. subnitida. Flavonoids had little influence on the differentiation of antioxidant activities of stingless bees, while the opposite occurred with the phenolic content, where honeys with the highest levels of phenolic also showed higher antioxidant capacity. ABSTRACT. This study examined biochemical changes associated with chilling injury (CI) in sweet potato roots stored at low temperatures and reconditioned at ambient temperature. Sweet potato cultivars BRS Amélia and BRS Rubissol were stored at 6 or 13°C for 4 days at ambient temperature (“ambient reconditioning”: 21 ± 2°C). CI on the outer surface of the roots occurred earlier in BRS Amélia than in BRS Rubissol. The CI index on the inner surface of the BRS Amélia was higher when it was stored at 6°C for 40 + 4 days. BRS Amélia showed higher proline content and electrolyte leakage when stored at 6°C. Ascorbate peroxidase was induced by storage at 6°C for 30 + 4 days in BRS Amélia and from 40 + 4 days in BRS Rubissol. The malondialdehyde and phenolic compounds of BRS Rubissol increased during storage at 6°C. CI in both cultivars was associated with increased peroxidase and polyphenol oxidase activities. Storage of sweet potato cultivars at 6°C for 50 + 4 days caused severe damage to the roots. Cultivars BRS Amélia and BRS Rubissol showed similar symptoms of CI and can be characterized as being sensitive to low temperatures. ABSTRACT Nasturtium (Tropaeolum majus) is an ornamental and medicinal plant that has edible flowers. Drought and salt stress decrease flower production and quality, including affecting sugar metabolism and ethylene production. Ethylene can accelerate the nasturtium senescence process, decreasing its postharvest quality. The use of polyamines, mainly spermine, may be a strategy for reducing the harmful effects of these stresses on the metabolism of sugars and phenolic compounds and for decreasing the production of ethylene, which accelerates senescence, in nasturtium flowers. Therefore, the objective here was to evaluate the role of spermine application on sugar and phenolic compounds and on ethylene production in nasturtium flowers grown under drought and salt stress. Two experiments were performed in isolation and at the same time in order to achieve this. Spermine down-regulated ethylene production and up-regulated the content of sugars and phenolic compounds on nasturtium flowers grown under drought and saline stress. Sugars and phenolic compounds down-regulated ethylene production in nasturtium flowers. Resumen En muchos tejidos vegetales, se ha utilizado el acondicionamiento a baja temperatura (LTC) para inducir respuestas adaptativas poscosecha para superar las consecuencias del daño por frío (CI). Este estudio tuvo como objetivo investigar si el LTC es eficaz para reducir la incidencia de daño por frío (CI) en cultivares de batata. Las raíces de batata BRS Cuia y BRS Rubissol se sometieron a almacenamiento en frío (6 °C o 13 °C) y LTC (10 °C durante 7 días, seguido de un segundo almacenamiento a 6 °C). El LTC aumentó la tolerancia de las raíces de la batata al IC mediante la activación del sistema antioxidante, principalmente en el cv. BRS Rubissol, que se asoció notablemente con un mayor contenido de fenoles solubles totales y prolina, así como una mayor actividad de la fenilalanina amonio liasa. Además, no se observaron lesiones externas ni internas en las raíces de LTC, manteniendo la calidad para el procesamiento, lo que indica que el LTC es eficaz para mitigar el daño por frío en los cultivares brasileños de batata.
Abstract In many plant tissues, low-temperature conditioning (LTC) has been used to induce postharvest adaptive responses to overcome chilling injury (CI) consequences. This study aimed to investigate whether LTC is effective in reducing the incidence of chilling injury (CI) in sweet potato cultivars. Sweet potato roots BRS Cuia and BRS Rubissol were submitted to cold storage (6 °C or 13 °C) and LTC (10 °C for 7 d, followed by second storage at 6 °C). LTC increased the tolerance of sweet potato roots to CI via antioxidant system activation, mainly in cv. BRS Rubissol, which was markedly associated with higher content of both total soluble phenolics and proline, as well as increased activity of phenylalanine ammonium lyase. Moreover, no either external or internal injuries were observed in the LTC roots, maintaining the quality for processing, which indicates that the LTC is effective in mitigating chilling injury in Brazilian sweet potato cultivars.

Abstract Sweet potato fried chips have great acceptance and high market value. Sprouting and fresh mass loss of tuberous roots during storage compromise the quality of the processed products. The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of 1-Methylcyclopropene (1-MCP), amino-oxyacetic acid (AOA), and ethylene on the physico-chemical quality of fresh sweet potato and its relationship with fried color score in processed chips of cv. BRS Rubissol stored at room temperature. During storage, the weight loss, sprouts number, dry matter content, non-enzymatic browning, protein content, soluble phenols fraction, reducing sugars, total amino acids, pH, soluble solids (SS), titratable acidity (TA) and SS/TA ratio were evaluated. The sweet potato roots cv. BRS Rubissol present good potential for processing as fried chips. 1-MCP and AOA treatments reduced the root sprouting, physico-chemical quality was maintained in all treatments and the fried chips showed less browning in all treatments with storage. Since the sprouting process compromises the storage of roots, AOA and 1-MCP treatments may be applied to extend the shelf-life of roots and improve the processing potential.

ABSTRACT High incidence of sprouts and loss of quality of sweet potato is one of the negative aspects that compromises the commercialization most, and the methods of sprout control are still very limited. The appearance of sprouts promotes the wilting of sweet potato roots, reducing their commercialization period. The main objectives of this study were to evaluate sprout control and physiological and biochemical changes, in addition to the impact on the quality of postharvest chips in sweet potato roots cultivar BRS Cuia treated with methyl jasmonate (MeJa) and nonanoic acid (NA). Roots were fogged with 10 μmol·L–1 MeJa or 5 μmol·L–1 NA applied at first sprout initiation and control. Physiological and biochemical alterations such as fresh weight loss assessment, sprouting incidence and sprout length, total soluble sugars, reducing sugars, nonreducing sugars, enzymatic peroxidase and polyphenol oxidase, chips quality after frying were then assessed. Besides that, to determine the influence of treatments and storage periods, multivariate analysis was also performed using the main components. The MeJa reduced the incidence of sprouting and maintained the root quality during storage at room temperature. Notably, such events led to an increased both shelf life and potential of commercialization. Moreover, MeJa-treated chips displayed lighter color appearance after frying than control and NA-treated roots. Roots fogged with NA did not suppress the growth of sprouts, which consequently triggered a higher browning intensity in fried sweet potato chips.

Abstract One of the major problems affecting potatoes quality on stored is the susceptibility to enzymatic browning, which occurs mainly after wounds during the harvest, at postharvest handling and by aging, leading to the development of dark color compounds. Enzymatic browning is associated with the action of polyphenoloxidases (PPO) and peroxidases (POD), which use phenolic compounds and oxygen as substrates. The products of these enzymes cause undesirable changes of color and flavor of processed potato products. The present study aimed to evaluate some kinetic properties based to optimum pH and reaction temperature, and to determine changes on activity of potato tubers PPO and POD treated with sprouting suppressors compounds menthol and eugenol. For each treatment, samples were collected in six different periods, before application (day 0) and 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 days after the treatments to determine the influence of sprout inhibitors on the activity of PPO and POD. Changes in pH and temperature affected drastically the activity of both enzymes. The use of eugenol and menthol as sprouting suppressors decreased enzymatic activity on the treated tubers compared to control with an inverse relationship between enzymes activity and content of phenolic compounds.

RESUMEN En condiciones de cultivo que favorezca el crecimiento de la parte aérea de la planta, la adopción de prácticas de manejo que reduzca el tamaño de las plantas puede ser una alternativa para aumentar el rendimiento de los tubérculos. El objetivo de este trabajo fue evaluar el efecto del paclobutrazol sobre el crecimiento vegetativo y la partición de la materia seca de la planta de papa cv. Markies cultivado en verano en el estado de Minas Gerais, Brasil. Los tratamientos fueron 0,1; 1,0; 10 y 100 mg L-1 de paclobutrazol (PBZ) aplicado a las semillas germinadas antes de plantar y um control tratado con agua. PBZ fue eficiente em la reducción de la altura de la planta. Los tratamientos con dosis de 10 y 100 mg L-1 de PBZ retrasaron la aparición de la parte aérea y el comienzo de la tuberización de la planta. PBZ a 0,1 mg L-1 redujo la longitud del tallo en un 18%, pero no difirió con el control en relación al contenido de masa fresca y seca, la producción total, la gravedad específica y el contenido de almidón de los tubérculos. El tratamiento de tubérculos de papa con PBZ a 0,1 mg L-1 presentan plantas más pequeñas y compactas, que podrían ser adecuadas para una plantación más densa para maximizar la población de plantas y aumentar el rendimiento económico por unidad de área.
ABSTRACT Under cultivation conditions that favor the growth of plant shoots, the adoption of management practices that reduce the size of potato plants can be an alternative for increasing tuber yield. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of paclobutrazol on vegetative growth and dry matter partitioning in the potato plant cv. Markies, cultivated under summer conditions in the state of Minas Gerais. The treatments were 0.1, 1.0, 10 and 100 mg L-1 of paclobutrazol (PBZ), applied to sprouted seeds before planting and control with water. PBZ was efficient in reducing plant height. The PBZ treatments with doses of 10 and 100 mg L-1 delayed the emergence of shoots and the beginning of plant tuberization. PBZ at 0.1 mg L-1 reduced the lengh of the stem by 18% but did not differ from the control for the fresh and dry mass content, total production, specific gravity and starch content of tubers. The treatment with seed potatoes and PBZ at 0.1 mg L-1 resulted in smaller, more compact plants, which could be suitable for more densely planted cultivations in order to maximize plant populations and increase economic return per unit of area.

Coatings technologies with biopolymeric films are effective in maintaining the chemical and sensory characteristics of several fruits. Cassava starch is an attractive biopolymeric because of its renewable characteristics and low cost, but it has a high transfer rate of water vapor. Hydrophilic compounds of organically modified montmorillonite clay by ion exchange can be used to improve the limiting properties of starch in exchange for additives such as lipids. The solutions prepared with 5% m/v starch / 5% m/m cationic / anionic clay and uncoated were applied in caja fruit, harvested at physiological maturity, selected for absence of defects and color uniformity. The experimental design was performed with four storage times (0, 3, 6 and 9 days). For the maturation index, there was an isolated effect of the type of coating and storage time, showing the composite films of modified cationic clay with greater MI of the fruits in comparison to the control fruits.

In order to evaluate the postharvest quality of different parts of the papaya fruit, an experiment was conducted in the Postharvest Laboratory, Department of Agrotechnology and Social Sciences, Universidade Federal Rural do Semiárido, Mossoró, RN, in September 2009. The fruits were harvested at maturity stage 2, when the fruit has 25% of the rind yellow. The experimental design was completely randomized with 20 repetitions, each repetition a fruit. The fruits were cut into three parts: stalk, median and apical, in which we analyzed the following characteristics: outer and inner pulp firmness, titratable acidity (TA), pH, soluble solids (SS), vitamin C and the SS/TA ratio. The stalk region presented higher acidity and pH than the median and apical areas. The firmness of the outer pulp iswas greater than that observed inside the fruit. The highest levels of soluble solids and SS/TA were found in the apical and median parts, demonstrating that these regions have milder flavor than the stalk region.
La papaya es una fruta muy apreciada en las Américas. Su calidad está intrísecamente asociada a sus características fisicoquímicas. En ese sentido se evaluó la calidad, después de la colecta de papaya Formosa. De esa manera un experiment fue realizado en el Laboratório de Tecnologia de los Alimentos de la Universidad Rural del Semiárido (UFERSA), Mossoró, RN com 20 frutos recogidos sirve el período de maduración (hasta 25% de cascara amarilla), siendo seleccionados en tres porciones distintas (peducular, mediana y apical) a partir de las cuales fueron analizadas las seguientes características: firmeza de la pulpa, acidez titulablae, pH, sólidos solubles, vitamina C y índice de maduración. El delineamento experimental utilizado fue totalmente casualizado, com 20 repeticiones de un fruto. La firmeza externa de la pulpa fue superior a la firmeza interna de los frutos. La region peduncular presentó valores de acidez titulables y pH superiors a las regions pedical y medianas. Y los mayors índices de sólidos solubles y índice de maturagao fueron detectados en las regions apical e mediana, demonstando que esas regiones presentan sabores mas prominentes que la region peduncular.
