Resumo Hypostomus é o gênero mais especioso de Hypostominae, composto por várias espécies com uma alta variação tanto morfológica, como no padrão de coloração intraespecífica, tornando sua identificação uma questão complexa. Uma das espécies com identificação complexa é Hypostomus tietensis, a qual foi descrita a partir de um único espécime, resultando em incertezas sobre o seu padrão de cor e identificação. Para auxiliar nesse contexto, análises citogenéticas foram realizadas em três populações putativas de H. tietensis da bacia do Alto rio Paraná, sendo uma delas da localidade tipo. As três populações apresentaram diferenças citogenéticas consideráveis, com 2n = 72 cromossomos para a população da localidade tipo e as demais com 2n = 76. RONs terminais foram detectadas (Ag- e FISH-DNAr 18S), sendo simples para a população da localidade tipo (par acrocêntrico 23, braço longo) e do rio Pirapó (par subtelocêntrico 11, braço curto) e múltiplas para rio Do Campo (pares subtelocêntricos 11 e 12, braço curto e longo, respectivamente), confirmado pela FISH-DNAr 18S. O bandamento C foi eficiente em diferenciar a população da localidade tipo das demais. Os dados citogenéticos revelaram que as populações dos rios Pirapó e do rio Do Campo, embora tratadas até agora como Hypostomus aff. tietensis, representam uma espécie críptica, e que análises morfológicas são necessárias para diferenciar e descrever esta nova espécie.

Abstract Hypostomus is the most specious genus of Hypostominae, composed of several species with high intraspecific morphological and color pattern variation, making their identification a complex issue. One of the species with problematic identification is Hypostomus tietensis that was described from a single specimen, resulting in uncertainties about its color pattern and correct identification. To assist in this context, cytogenetic analyzes were carried out in three putative populations of H. tietensis from the Upper Paraná River basin, one of them from the type locality. The three populations showed considerable cytogenetic differences, with 2n = 72 chromosomes for the population from the type locality and 2n = 76 chromosomes for the others. Terminal NORs were detected (Ag- and 18S rDNA-FISH), being simple for the type locality population (acrocentric pair 23, long arm) and the Pirapó River (subtelocentric pair 11, short arm), and multiple for Do Campo River (subtelocentric pairs 11 and 12, short and long arm, respectively). C-banding was efficient in differentiating the type locality population from the others. Cytogenetic data revealed that populations from Pirapó and Do Campo rivers, although treated until now as Hypostomus aff. tietensis, represent a cryptic species, and those morphological analyses are necessary to differentiate and for describing this new species.

RESUMO O gênero cisandino Aphanotorulus foi recentemente revisado e consiste de seis espécies válidas: A. ammophilus, A. emarginatus, A. gomesi, A. horridus, A. phrixosoma e A. unicolor. No presente trabalho, uma nova espécie é descrita dos tributários da bacia do rio Aripuanã, nos estados do Amazonas e Mato Grosso, Brasil. A nova espécie é facilmente distinguida de suas congêneres pelo padrão de coloração: nadadeira caudal com o lobo superior quase totalmente hialino e com pintas escuras ao longo dos raios e membranas, e o lobo inferior vermelho e desprovido de pintas; ausência de manchas escuras na série lateral de placas medianas ventrais.

ABSTRACT The cis-Andean genus Aphanotorulus was recently revised and comprises six valid species: A. ammophilus, A. emarginatus, A. gomesi, A. horridus, A. phrixosoma and A. unicolor. Herein, a new species is described from tributaries of the rio Aripuanã basin, in Amazonas and Mato Grosso states, Brazil. The new species is easily distinguished from congeners by its color pattern: caudal fin with upper lobe mostly hyaline with dark spots along rays and membranes, and lower lobe red and without dark spots; and absence of dark spots in the lateral series of mid-ventral plates.

Uma nova espécie de Hypostomus é descrita do rio Quente, drenagem do rio Paranaíba, bacia do alto rio Paraná no Brasil Central. O rio Quente é um riacho peculiar, raso e de correnteza, cujas temperaturas atingem em torno de 34ºC. A espécie nova é distinguida de todas as congêneres por ter as cinco séries de placas laterais com odontódeos hipertrofiados, os quais não são alinhados em fileiras, sendo mais conspícuos nos flancos do pedúnculo caudal nos indivíduos maiores. A espécie nova é conhecida apenas do rio Quente.

A new species of Hypostomus is described from the rio Quente, rio Paranaíba drainage, in the upper rio Paraná basin in central Brazil. The rio Quente is a peculiar small and shallow fast water stream with water temperatures around 34ºC. The new species is distinguished from all congeners by having the five lateral series of plates with hypertrophied odontodes not aligned in rows and more conspicuous on flanks of caudal peduncle of the larger specimens. The new species is only known from the rio Quente.

O grupo Hypostomus cochliodon é um clado monofilético com 20 espécies válidas de cascudos neotropicais que estão amplamente distribuídos por toda América do Sul. Recentemente, espécimes identificados como H. cochliodon da localidadetipo e regiões próximas foram examinados e descobriu-se que se tratavam de representantes de mais de uma espécie. Uma redescrição de H. cochliodon é apresentada, com a descrição de duas espécies novas, uma da Serra da Bodoquena e outra de várias localidades da bacia do rio Paraguai. Um lectótipo para H. cochliodon é aqui designado, já que a designação anterior é inválida. Hypostomus cochliodon é diagnosticado de todas as outras espécies do grupo H. cochliodon por possuir opérculo quase completamente coberto lateralmente por uma grossa camada de pele, ausência de papila bucal, placas laterais do corpo com quilhas fracas ou moderadamente desenvolvidas e pelo padrão de coloração de seu corpo e nadadeiras. Hypostomus basilisko, espécie nova, é distinguida das demais espécies do grupo H. cochliodon pela ausência de pintas no corpo, quilhas muito desenvolvidas e dentes em forma de colher. Hypostomus khimaera, espécie nova, é distinguida das outras espécies do grupo H. cochliodon por possuir uma faixa escura ao longo da linha mediana do corpo, pintas pretas no corpo e/ou nadadeiras e dentes com cúspide mesial não em forma de colher.

Hypostomus cochliodon group is a monophyletic clade of 20 valid species of Neotropical armored catfishes that is widely distributed throughout South America. Recently, specimens identified as H. cochliodon from the type locality and nearby localities were examined, and found to include representatives of more than one species. A redescription of H. cochliodon is provided, with a description of two new species, one from the Bodoquena Plateau and another from several localities of the rio Paraguay basin. A lectotype for H. cochliodon is designated herein, since the previous designation is invalid. Hypostomus cochliodon is diagnosed from all other species of the H. cochliodon group by having the opercle almost completely covered laterally by thick layer of skin, the absence of buccal papilla, weak to moderately developed keels on the lateral plates of the body and by the color pattern of its body and fins. Hypostomus basilisko, new species, is distinguished from the remaining species of the H. cochliodon group by the absence of spots on the body, highly developed keels and spoon-shaped teeth. Hypostomus khimaera, new species, is distinguished from the other species of the H. cochliodon group by having a dark tan stripe along the midline of the flank, black spots on the body and/or fins and teeth with mesial cusp and not spoon-shaped.

Uma espécie nova de Hypostomus, H. dardanelos, é descrita da bacia do rio Aripuanã, um tributário ao sul do rio Madeira, no norte do estado do Mato Grosso, Brasil. A espécie nova é atribuída ao grupo Hypostomus cochliodon por apresentar poucos dentes, dentes em forma de colher, ângulo entre os dentários usualmente menor que 80° e pela ausência de uma chanfradura entre o hiomandibular e o metapterigoide. A espécie nova pode ser diagnosticada de suas congêneres por seu padrão de cor único marrom-amarelado com pintas escuras bem definidas de tamanho homogêneo, moderadamente distanciadas e igualmente distribuídas ao longo da região dorsal do corpo e nadadeiras, exceto na região ventrolateral do pedúnculo caudal e na região proximal da nadadeira caudal, que são desprovidas de pintas. A espécie nova é adicionalmente diagnosticada por possuir dentes com a cúspide lateral muito reduzida, fundida à cúspide mesial e quase imperceptível; pela ausência da papila bucal medial e por odontódeos nupciais presentes em todo o corpo (odontódeos mais evidentes em alguns poucos exemplares maiores).

A new species of Hypostomus, H. dardanelos, is described from the rio Aripuanã basin, a southern tributary to the rio Madeira, in northern Mato Grosso State, Brazil. The new species is assigned to the Hypostomus cochliodon group by the possession of few teeth, spoon-shaped teeth, angle between dentaries usually less than 80°, and by the absence of a notch between hyomandibular and the metapterygoid. The new species can be diagnosed from its congeners by its unique color pattern of yellowish-brown ground color covered by well-defined dark spots of relatively equal size, evenly spaced and moderately set along the dorsal region of the body and fins, except on the ventrolateral region of the caudal peduncle and proximal region of anal and caudal fins, which are devoid of spots. The new species is further diagnosed by having teeth with very small lateral cusp, fused to the mesial one and almost imperceptible; by the absence of medial buccal papillae, and by nuptial odontodes all along the body (odontodes more pronounced in some few larger specimens).

Uma espécie nova de Hypostomus Lacépède é descrita da bacia do rio Paraguaçu, estado da Bahia, Brasil. A espécie nova distingue-se de suas congêneres por apresentar corpo com manchas pretas e conspícuas sobre fundo claro de tamanho semelhante no tronco, cabeça e nadadeiras, além da superfície ventral da cabeça e abdômen nus ou apenas porção anterior do abdômen coberto por placas, ausência de quilhas na cabeça e no corpo e lobos da nadadeira caudal relativamente similares no comprimento. A espécie nova difere ainda da simpátrica H. chrysostiktos por ter sete raios ramificados na nadadeira dorsal ao invés de 10-11 e representa a décima primeira espécie de siluriforme endêmica da bacia do rio Paraguaçu.

A new species of Hypostomus Lacépède is described from the rio Paraguaçu basin, Bahia State, Brazil. The new species is distinguished from its congeners by having black and conspicuous dots on a pale background, which are similar in size on the head, trunk, and fins, along with ventral surface of head and abdomen naked or the latter plated exclusively on its anterior portion, absence of ridges on head and trunk, and caudal-fin lobes relatively similar in length. The new species further differs from the sympatric H. chrysostiktos by having seven branched dorsal-fin rays instead of 10-11 and represents the eleventh siluriform species endemic to the rio Paraguaçu basin.

As espécies do gênero Rineloricaria da bacia do rio Paraguai foram revisadas, as seguintes espécies e padrões de distribuição foram encontradas: R. aurata, bacia do rio Paraguai no Brasil e Paraguai, rio Guaporé no Brasil; R. cacerensis, rio Paraguai perto de Cáceres no Brasil; R. lanceolata, bacia do rio Paraguai no Brasil e Paraguai, rios Guaporé, Ji-Paraná, Purus, Solimões e Araguaia no Brasil, rios Marañón e Madre de Dios no Peru; R. parva, bacia do rio Paraguai no Brasil e Paraguai, rio Paraná na Argentina, rio Uruguai no Brasil. Loricaria hoehnei é proposta como novo sinônimo júnior de R. lanceolata. Uma chave de identificação para as espécies de Rineloricaria da bacia do rio Paraguai é fornecida.

Species of the genus Rineloricaria from the Paraguay River basin were revised, the following species and geographic distributional patterns were found: R. aurata, Paraguay River basin in Brazil and Paraguay, rio Guaporé in Brazil; R. cacerensis, Paraguay River near Cáceres in Brazil; R. lanceolata, Paraguay River basin in Brazil and Paraguay, Guaporé, Ji-Paraná, Purus, Solimões, and Araguaia rivers in Brazil, Marañón and Madre de Dios rivers in Peru; R. parva, Paraguay River basin in Brazil and Paraguay, Paraná River in Argentina, Uruguay River in Brazil. Loricaria hoehnei is proposed as a new junior synonym of R. lanceolata. A key to the species of Rineloricaria from the Paraguay River basin is provided.

Uma espécie nova de cascudo do gênero Hypostomus é descrita da bacia do alto rio Xingu, estado de Mato Grosso, Brasil. A espécie nova é diagnosticada de suas congêneres por ter um alto número de dentes (58 a 101, média 77 no pré-maxilar e 58 a 105, média 80 no dentário), manchas escuras sobre o corpo e nadadeiras e abdômen em grande parte nu. A espécie nova é conhecida de corredeiras do rio Culuene, onde ocorre simpatricamente a Hypostomus faveolus.

A new armored catfish species of the genus Hypostomus is described from the upper rio Xingu basin, Mato Grosso State, Brazil. The new species is diagnosed from congeners by having high number of teeth (58 to 101, mean 77 on premaxilla, and 58 to 105, mean 80 on dentary), dark spots over body and fins, and abdomen mostly naked. The new species is known from the rapids of the rio Culuene, where it is sympatric with Hypostomus faveolus.

Allozyme electrophoresis was used to examine 12 enzymatic systems in two populations of the genus Neoplecostomus from the Paraná River basin. Samples of Neoplecostomus sp. 1 were collected in Paraitinguinha stream of the Tietê River basin, in the municipality of Salesópolis, São Paulo State, and those of Neoplecostomus sp. 2 from São Domingos stream of the Rio Grande River basin, in the municipality of Muzambinho, Minas Gerais State. The genetic variability of the two populations was estimated by Nei's expected heterozygosity and was considered lower than average for populations of freshwater fish. The proportion of polymorphic loci was low (only 5.26% for the locus Idh). The low frequency of heterozygosity for both populations revealed a high fixation of alleles for each locus. Homozygote excess was observed in both populations. The values of Nei's genetic identity and the presence of loci with different allele frequencies in both populations may imply that the two populations belong to different species. The genetic variability between populations was compared to other data for loricariids.

Duas novas espécies de Hypostomus são descritas para a bacia do alto e médio rio Negro no Brasil. Elas são atribuídas ao grupo Hypostomus cochliodon (sensu Armbruster, 2003) por possuírem poucos dentes, em forma de colher e ângulo entre os dentários menor que 80º. Hypostomus kopeyaka, descrita do rio Tiquié, um afluente do rio Uaupés, bacia do alto rio Negro, apresenta um padrão de colorido único entre as espécies de Hypostomus pertencentes ao grupo Hypostomus cochliodon, que consiste em manchas escuras conspícuas horizontalmente alongadas e próximas entre si sobre toda a superfície dorso-lateral do corpo. Hypostomus weberi, descrita do médio rio Negro, é distinguida de todas as espécies de Hypostomus pertencentes ao grupo Hypostomus cochliodon por possuir um padrão de colorido único que consiste em grandes manchas escuras e arredondadas, relativamente afastadas entre si, sobre toda a superfície do corpo e nadadeiras.

Two new species of Hypostomus are described from the middle and upper rio Negro in Brazil. They are assigned to the Hypostomus cochliodon group (sensu Armbruster, 2003) by possessing few spoon-shaped teeth, and dentary angle averaging less than 80º. Hypostomus kopeyaka is described from the rio Tiquié, a tributary of the rio Uaupés, upper rio Negro basin, presents a unique color pattern among the Hypostomus species belonging to the Hypostomus cochliodon group, consisting of conspicuously horizontally elongated, closely-set black spots over the entire dorsal and lateral surfaces of the body. Hypostomus weberi is described from the middle rio Negro and can be distinguished from all remaining Hypostomus species belonging to the Hypostomus cochliodon group by possessing a unique color pattern consisting in large, rounded, widelyspaced black spots over body and fins.

Two allopatric morphotypes of the genus Rinelocaria were compared through the allozyme electrophoresis technique: one morphotype, R. pentamaculata, from the Keller River in the middle stretch of the Ivaí River basin and the other, R. aff. pentamaculata, from the São João River in the upper portion of the Ivaí River basin. The morphotype from the São João River was collected upstream from the São João waterfall, which is about 80 m deep. Twelve enzymatic systems (AAT, ADH, EST, GCDH, G3PDH, GPI, IDH, LDH, MDH, ME, PGM and SOD) were analyzed, which allowed to score 22 loci. Only loci Aat-2, Est-3 and Mdh-C showed polymorphism. The two samples differed in allele frequencies at the three polymorphic loci. The average expected heterozygosity for all loci was 0.0806 ± 0.0447 in the Keller River sample. For the São João River morphotype, this value was 0.0489 ± 0.0350. Nei' s genetic identity and distance between the two populations were respectively 0.9789 and 0.0213. Wright's F IS, F IT and F STover all loci were estimated as 0.3121, 0.4021 and 0.1309, respectively. We consider that the two morphotypes represent species in statu nascendi.

Two syntopic morphotypes of the genus Hypostomus - H. nigromaculatus and H. cf. nigromaculatus (Atlântico Stream, Paraná State) - were compared through the allozyme electrophoresis technique. Twelve enzymatic systems (AAT, ADH, EST, GCDH, G3PDH, GPI, IDH, LDH, MDH, ME, PGM and SOD) were analyzed, attributing the score of 20 loci, with a total of 30 alleles. Six loci were diagnostic (Aat-2, Gcdh-1, Gpi-A, Idh-1, Ldh-A and Mdh-A), indicating the presence of interjacent reproductive isolation. The occurrence of few polymorphic loci acknowledge two morphotypes, with heterozygosity values He = 0.0291 for H. nigromaculatus and He = 0.0346 for H. cf. nigromaculatus. F IS statistics demonstrated fixation of the alleles in the two morphotypes. Genetic identity (I) and distance (D) of Nei (1978) values were I = 0.6515 and D = 0.4285. The data indicate that these two morphotypes from the Atlântico Stream belong to different species.

Three Brazilian populations of the armored catfish Hypostomus regani (Ihering, 1905) were sampled, one from the Corumbá Reservoir in Goiás state, another from the Itaipu Reservoir in Paraná state and a third from the Manso Reservoir in Mato Grosso state. Allozyme electrophoresis was used to establish the genetic structure of the species, with the analysis of liver, heart and muscles tissues allowing the scoring of 25 loci from 14 enzymatic systems. Although no diagnostic loci were found, some exclusive rare alleles were recorded for the three populations. The genetically most similar populations were those from Corumbá and Itaipu, and the most distant were the populations from Manso and Corumbá. The allozyme data showed three structured populations belonging to the same species H. regani (F ST = 0.173).

Duas novas espécies de Hypostomus Lacépède (Teleostei: Loricariidae) das bacias dos rios Grande e Paranaíba, ambos da bacia do alto rio Paraná, Brasil Central, são descritas aqui. Uma delas é diferenciada de todas as congêneres, exceto H. albopunctatus, por possuir o espinho da nadadeira peitoral de comprimento igual ou menor que o espinho da nadadeira pélvica. De H. albopunctatus, é diferenciada por ter por ter pintas arredondadas escuras (vs. claras) sobre o corpo e nadadeiras. A segunda espécie é distinguida de todas as congêneres, exceto H. multidens e H. ternetzi, por ter mais de 115 (vs. menos de 109) dentes em cada hemisérie no dentário e pré-maxilar. Esta é prontamente distinguida de H. ternetzi por ter dentes com duas cúspides simétricas (vs. cúspides assimétricas). Esta é distinguida de H. multidens por ter pintas escuras arredondadas sobre o corpo e nadadeiras (vs. pintas claras).

Two new species of Hypostomus Lacépède (Teleostei: Loricariidae) from the rio Paranaíba and rio Grande basins, both in the upper rio Paraná basin, central Brazil, are described herein. One of them is distinguished from all congeners, except H. albopunctatus, by having the pectoral-fin spine length equal to or smaller than the pelvic-fin spine. From H. albopunctatus, it is distinguished by having round dark spots (vs. pale) on body and fins. The second species is distinguished from all congeners, except H. multidens and H. ternetzi, by having more than 115 teeth (vs. less than 109) per ramus on dentary and premaxilla. It is distinguished most readily from H. ternetzi by having teeth with two symmetrical (vs. asymmetrical) cusps. It is distinguished from H. multidens by having round dark spots (vs. pale) over body and fins.

Uma nova espécie do gênero Hypostomus Lacépède (Siluriformes, Loricariidae) é descrita das bacias dos rios Tocantins e Xingu no Brasil central. A nova espécie distingue-se de suas congêneres pela combinação única de manchas claras sobre fundo escuro na cabeça, corpo e nadadeiras, e quilhas conspícuas na cabeça, região predorsal e placas laterais. Comentários sobre as espécies de Hypostomus de manchas claras são fornecidos.

A new species of the genus Hypostomus Lacépède (Siluriformes, Loricariidae) from rio Tocantins and rio Xingu basins in central Brazil, is described. The new species is distinguished from its congeners by a unique combination of pale blotches over a darker background on head, body and fins, and conspicuous keels on head, predorsal region and lateral plates. Comments on the pale-spotted species of Hypostomus are provided.
