Abstract In the modern world, cancer is a growing cause of mortality, but archeological studies have shown that it is not exclusive to modern populations. The aim of this study is to examine the epidemiologic, social, and clinicopathologic features of head and neck cancers in ancient populations. To do this, we extracted all records that described malignant lesions in the head and neck region available in the Cancer Research in Ancient Bodies Database (CRAB). The estimated age, sex, physical condition of the remains (skeletonized, mummified), anatomic location of tumors, geographic location, chronology, tumor type, and methods of tumor diagnosis were collected. One hundred and sixty-seven cases were found, mostly originating from Europe (51.5%). Most records were of adults between 35 and 49 years of age (37.7%). The most involved site was the skullcap (60.4%), and the most common malignancies were metastases to the bone (65.3%) and multiple myeloma (17.4%). No primary soft tissue malignancies were registered. The results of our study indicate that head and neck cancers were present in ancient civilizations, at least since 500,000 BCE. The available data can help to improve the current understanding of the global distribution of head and neck cancer and its multidimensional impacts on populations in the contemporary world.

Abstract Oral cancer is a public health problem worldwide with approximately 300,000 new cases diagnosed every year and more than 170,000 deaths annually. Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) accounts for approximately 90% of all oral malignancies and it is frequently preceded by lesions known as oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs). Screening programs for early detection of oral lesions have been conducted. Therefore, the objective of this research was to carry out an active search in a screening program in the city of Piracicaba, Brazil. High-risk patients were identified at the city’s health center through their medical records and referred for dental consultation. Other patients who opportunistically sought dental care were also seen and if they did not present risk factors for SCC, they were considered low-risk. A total of 756 patients were examined, and 445 met the criteria for the high-risk group and 311 for the low-risk group. It was possible to diagnose 27 OPMDs and six SCCs – 21 OPMDs and six SCCs occurred in high-risk patients and six OPMDs in low-risk patients. A chi-square test was applied and a statistically significant value (p = 0.006) was obtained for the detection of OPMD and SCC in patients of the high-risk group. Screening of high-risk patients through active search proved to be an effective program for diagnosing OPMD and SCC. Therefore, we encourage its implementation on a large scale to reduce the current scenario of this disease.

Abstract The aim of this study was to describe the prevalence, clinicopathological, and prognostic features of acinic cell carcinoma (AciCC) of the oral and maxillofacial region. AciCC cases were retrospectively retrieved from 11 pathology centers of three different countries. Medical records were examined to extract demographic, clinical, pathologic, and follow-up information. A total of 75 cases were included. Females (65.33%) with a mean age of 45.51 years were mostly affected. The lesions usually presented as an asymptomatic (64.28%) nodule (95.66%) in the parotid gland (70.68%). The association of two histopathological patterns was the most common finding (48.93%) and the tumors presented mainly conventional histopathological grades (86.11%). Surgical treatment was performed in the majority of the cases (59.19%). Local recurrence was observed in 20% of the informed cases, regional metastasis in 30.43%, and distant metastasis in 12.50%. The statistical analysis showed that the cases with a solid histopathological pattern (p=0.01), high-grade transformation (p=0.008), recurrence (p=0.007), and regional metastasis (p=0.03) were associated with poor survival. In conclusion, high histopathological transformation, presence of nodal metastasis, and recurrence were prognostic factors for AciCC of the oral and maxillofacial region.

Abstract This study aimed to evaluate the contribution of oral and maxillofacial pathology laboratories (OMPLs) in Brazilian public universities to the diagnosis of lip, oral cavity, and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). A cross-sectional study was performed using biopsy records from a consortium of sixteen public OMPLs from all regions of Brazil (North, Northeast, Central-West, Southeast, and South). Clinical and demographic data of patients diagnosed with lip, oral cavity, and oropharyngeal SCC between 2010 and 2019 were collected from the patients’ histopathological records. Of the 120,010 oral and maxillofacial biopsies (2010-2019), 6.9% (8,321 cases) were diagnosed as lip (0.8%, 951 cases), oral cavity (4.9%, 5,971 cases), and oropharyngeal (1.2%, 1,399 cases) SCCs. Most cases were from Brazil’s Southeast (64.5%), where six of the OMPLs analyzed are located. The predominant profile of patients with lip and oral cavity SCC was Caucasian men, with a mean age over 60 years, low schooling level, and a previous history of heavy tobacco consumption. In the oropharyngeal group, the majority were non-Caucasian men, with a mean age under 60 years, had a low education level, and were former/current tobacco and alcohol users. According to data from the Brazilian National Cancer Institute, approximately 9.9% of the total lip, oral cavity, and oropharyngeal SCCs reported over the last decade in Brazil may have been diagnosed at the OMPLs included in the current study. Therefore, this data confirms the contribution of public OMPLs with respect to the important diagnostic support they provide to the oral healthcare services extended by the Brazilian Public Health System.

ABSTRACT The gingival cyst of the adult (GCA) is a rare odontogenic cyst, consisting of 0.3% of all odontogenic cysts. This case report, based on CARE guidelines for case reports, aims to present a case of a 52-year-old female patient with a symptomatic translucent nodule in the upper left anterior gingiva, measuring approximately 6mm. Excisional biopsy was performed, and the histological examination revealed multiple cystic cavities lined by the squamous epithelium of varying thickness with focal areas of nodular thickenings. The presence of clusters of cells with clear cytoplasm within epithelial thickenings was observed. PAS staining was negative in clear cells. The diagnosis of the GCA was established. Despite its rarity, GCA should be considered in the differential diagnosis of gingival lesions. Conservative surgical treatment proved to be effective, with no signs of recurrence.

Resumen Se realizó un diagnóstico y tratamiento de los sistemas de trampa de grasa y aceite (GOTS) de cuatro establecimientos universitarios de servicios de alimentos (FSE) para evaluar el uso potencial de los lodos recolectados para producir compost. El lodo total recogido de cada FSE se colocó durante 30 días en un lecho de secado (SDB); durante este período de tiempo se añadió frecuentemente óxido de calcio para estabilizar el lodo. El lodo depositado mensualmente se redujo a la mitad luego del proceso de secado, para posteriormente ser depositado en un compostador y ser mezclado; este periodo fue de 22 días con agitación constante. El compostaje obtenido se trató con enzimas degradantes, este compostaje se denominó compostaje enzimático (EC). El resto del compostaje no tratado con enzimas se llamó compostaje no enzimático (NEC). El período total de tiempo para el ciclo de compostaje de lodo fue de 83 días, donde se realizaron varios análisis físicos y químicos para 3 tipos de sustratos (SDB, NEC y EC). La investigación duró un periodo total de 2.5 años. El porcentaje de fósforo, potasio, magnesio y calcio sugiere el uso de los tres sustratos como fertilizante orgánico. Una recomendación de esta investigación es evaluar la calidad del lodo mezclándolo con otros sustratos; por ejemplo, cáscaras de frutas con alto contenido de nitrógeno y con el lodo de los sistemas de tratamiento de aguas residuales.

Resumo Foi realizado um diagnóstico e tratamento dos sistemas de armadilha de gordura, óleo e graxa (FOG) de estabelecimentos de serviços de alimentação (ESA) de quatro universidades com o objetivo de avaliar o uso potencial do lodo coletado para produzir compostos. O lodo total recolhido de cada FSE foi colocado durante 30 dias em um leito de secagem, e neste período de tempo foi adicionado frequentemente óxido de cálcio para estabilizá-lo. Depois do processo de secagem, o lodo depositado mensalmente reduziu pela metade para, logo, ser depositado em um compostador e misturado a cada mês com agitação constante por um período de 22 dias. O composto obtido foi tratado com enzimas degradantes, sendo denominado composto enzimático (CE). O composto restante não tratado com enzimas foi denominado composto não enzimático (CNE). O período total de tempo para o ciclo de compostagem de lodo foi de 83 dias, em que se realizaram várias análises físicas e químicas para 3 tipos de substratos (LLS, CNE e CE). A porcentagem de fósforo, potássio, magnésio e cálcio propõe o uso dos três substratos como fertilizante orgânico. Uma recomendação desta pesquisa é avaliar a qualidade do lodo misturando-o com outros substratos; por exemplo, cascas de frutas com alto teor de nitrogênio e com o lodo dos sistemas de tratamento de águas residuais.

Abstract The grease and oil trap systems (GOTS) of four university food service establishments (FSE) were assessed and treated to evaluate the potential use of the sludge collected to produce compost. The sludge collected from each FSE was kept in a drying bed for 30 days (SDB), during which time calcium oxide was frequently added for stabilization. The sludge deposited monthly was reduced to half after the drying process and was then deposited in a composter and mixed for a period of 22 days with constant agitation. The compost obtained was treated with degrading enzymes and was denominated enzymatic composting (EC), while the remaining compost was not treated with enzyme and was denominated non-enzymatic compost (NEC). The total composting cycle of the sludge lasted 83 days, during which time various physical and chemical analyzes were conducted in the three types of substrates (SDB, NEC, and EC). The total time of the research was 2.5 years. The percentages of phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, and calcium suggest the use of the three substrates as organic fertilizer. A recommendation resulting from this research is to evaluate the sludge quality by mixing it with other substrates such as fruit peels with high nitrogen content and the sludge from wastewater treatment systems.

RESUMO O rendimento médio nacional da batata-doce está abaixo do potencial produtivo da cultura, principalmente devido ao cultivo de variedades locais e não melhoradas que apresentam baixos rendimentos. Para melhorar essa condição, junto com tratamentos culturais adequados, deve-se buscar cultivares mais produtivas. Assim, objetivou-se caracterizar genótipos de batata-doce obtidos por meio de cruzamentos. O experimento foi conduzido de janeiro a maio de 2019 em Selvíria, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brasil. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos casualizados com 264 (genótipos) + Controle (‘Beauregard’), com duas repetições. A colheita de todas as plantas começou 127 dias após o plantio dos propágulos. Após a colheita, as raízes foram lavadas e colocadas para secar em área coberta para avaliação. Foram avaliados: rendimento total, comercial e não comercial; número total, comercial e não comercial da raiz; teor de matéria seca de raízes; e a produtividade de matéria seca. Os genótipos CERAT16-20, CERAT31-1 e CERAT21-2 são promissores para a produção de raízes para consumo doméstico devido à alta produtividade das raízes comerciais. Os acessos CERAT16-20, CERAT31-1, CERAT25-17, CERAT25-12, CERAT21-2, CERAT29-26, CERAT34-4, CERAT31-11 e CERAT24-8 são promissores para a indústria devido à alta produção de massa seca por hectare. Os componentes principais, número total de raízes comerciais, produção de raízes não comerciais, massa de raízes comerciais, produção total de massa seca de raízes, massa de raízes e produção total de raízes têm baixa contribuição para discriminação dos genótipos, portanto, sua análise pode ser descartada em trabalhos futuros, sob mesmas condições edafoclimáticas, reduzindo o trabalho, despesas e tempo.

ABSTRACT The average national sweet potato yield of Brazil falls below the productive potential of the crop because of the cultivation of local and unimproved varieties. To improve this, more productive cultivars must be adopted along with adequate culture treatments. This study was conducted between January and May 2019 in Selvíria, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, to characterize sweet potato genotypes obtained through crossbreeding. The experimental design consisted of randomized blocks containing 264 genotypes, the control (‘Beauregard’), and two replicates. Plant harvesting began 127 d after planting. After harvesting, the roots were washed and dried in a covered area ready for evaluation. The total, commercial, and non-commercial yield; total, commercial, and non-commercial root number; root dry matter content; and dry matter productivity were evaluated. The genotypes CERAT16-20, CERAT31-1, and CERAT21-2 are promising in terms of root production for household consumption because of their high productivity of commercial roots. In contrast, genotypes CERAT16-20, CERAT31-1, CERAT25-17, CERAT25-12, CERAT21-2, CERAT29-26, CERAT34- 4, CERAT31-11, and CERAT24-8 are promising for industry because of the high production of dry mass per hectare. The main components, total number of commercial roots, production of non-commercial roots, mass of commercial roots, total production of dry mass of roots, mass of roots, and total production of roots have a low contribution to the discrimination of the genotypes; therefore, their analysis can be discarded in future studies, under the same soil and climate conditions, thus reducing workload, expense, and time.

Abstract Good communication between clinicians and pathologists is a vital element in the diagnostic process, and poor communication can adversely affect patient care. There is a lack of research about communication in diagnostic oral and maxillofacial pathology. This narrative review explores different aspects of the quality of communication between clinicians and oral pathologists, with a focus on the diagnosis of oral and maxillofacial diseases. An electronic search was carried out in MEDLINE through the PubMed, Scopus, and Embase databases up to April 2021. No studies reporting communication, its adequacy or the required skills between clinicians and pathologists in oral diagnosis were found. According to studies published in medicine, strategies for improving communication skills include clinician-pathologist collaboration; a well-formatted, clear and thorough report; training in communication skills; and patient-centered care. Further studies evaluating the current practices and quality in oral and maxillofacial pathology are required to identify barriers and encourage optimal communication to facilitate diagnosis, as well as patient safety.

ABSTRACT. Sweetpotato (Ipomoea batatas L.) is an important tuber vegetable for human health worldwide owing to its nutritional value and productivity. Consumption of orange-fleshed sweetpotato is beneficial to combat vitamin A deficiency in the world, including Brazil, as these tubers are rich in β-carotene, a precursor of vitamin A. The genotype × environment interaction is one of the greatest challenges in plant breeding, specifically in the selection and approval of cultivars. In this context, adaptability and stability analyses are warranted to evaluate the performance of various genotypes in terms of general or specific adaptations to certain environments and to identify genotypes responsive to environmental variations. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the genotype × environment interaction as well as to estimate the adaptability and stability of sweetpotato genotypes for identifying and selecting promising candidates for breeding. The experiments were performed in four environments: Vera Cruz in São Paulo, Selvíria in Mato Grosso do Sul, and one organic and another intercropped production system in Sete Barras in São Paulo. A randomized block design with two replicates was adopted. A total of 265 genotypes were tested, and the orange-fleshed sweetpotato cultivar ‘Beauregard’ was used as the control. The additive main effects and multiplicative interaction model was used to study environmental stratification, adaptability, and stability. The genotype × environment interaction was evident in all environments. The genotypes CERAT21-13 (marketable root yield, 22.30 t ha-1 in the four environments), CERAT29-26 (27.74 t ha-1), and CERAT52-22 (20.24 t ha-1) were the most adapted in general to the four environments. CERAT25-23, CERAT29-23, and CERAT29-26 were the most adapted to the environment in Vera Cruz; CERAT29-26, CERAT34-14, and CERAT56-32 to the environment in Selvíria; and CERAT31-10, CERAT35-19, and CERAT52-22 to the two environments in Sete Barras.

Abstract This study tested the hypothesis that head and neck radiotherapy (HNRT) impacts the immunoexpression of type I collagen, bone sialoprotein (BSP) and bone morphogenetic protein 4 (BMP4), thereby leading to micromorphological changes in the dentin-pulp complex (DPC), and promoting the onset and progression of radiation caries (RC). Twenty-two demineralized sections of carious teeth (a group of 11 irradiated teeth and a control group of 11 non-irradiated teeth) extracted from 19 head and neck cancer patients were analyzed by conventional optical microscopy and immunohistochemistry to investigate the micromorphology (cellular layer hierarchy, blood vessels, odontoblasts, fibroblasts, extracellular matrix, calcification, necrosis, reactionary dentin formation, and chronic inflammation), and the patterns of staining/immunolocalization of type I collagen, BSP and BMP4 in the dental pulp of irradiated and control samples. No significant differences attributable to the direct impact of radiotherapy were detected in DPC micromorphology between the groups. In addition, the patterns of immunohistochemical staining and immunolocalization of the proteins studied did not differ between the irradiated and the control samples for type I collagen, BSP or BMP4. This study rejected the hypothesis that HNRT directly damages dentition by changing the organic components and the microstructure of the DPC, ultimately leading to RC.

Abstract: This article presents the main results of a research carried out at the Universidad de Barcelona, which aim has been to analyze the assessment of undergraduate students about their educational trajectory in relation to learning through transversal competences promoted by the European Higher Education Area. Through the analysis of relational content, the significant representations identified from the voices of the students, teachers and grade coordinators have been characterized using collection strategies and qualitative analysis. The results have allowed us to recognize some weaknesses in the elaboration of the plans and in the training intentionality, showing a low understanding regarding the learning processes of the students.

Resumen: El presente artículo expone los principales resultados de una investigación realizada en la Universidad de Barcelona, cuyo objetivo ha sido analizar la valoración del estudiantado de grado, sobre su trayectoria formativa en relación al aprendizaje por competencias transversales promovido por el Espacio Europeo de Educación Superior. A través del análisis de contenido relacional, se han caracterizado las representaciones significativas identificadas desde las voces de los estudiantes, profesores y coordinadores de grado utilizando estrategias de recolección y análisis cualitativo. Los resultados nos han permitido reconocer algunas debilidades en la elaboración de los planes y en la intencionalidad formativa, evidenciando una baja comprensión respecto a los procesos de aprendizaje del estudiantado.

Abstract This paper is the result of a research that analyzes the main aspects in the development of reading literary in the childhood. This research was made in four schools in the province of Córdoba (Argentina), and was based on the implementation of re- creational-literary activities for multiple groups of students, the objective was analyze how they enhance reading through playful activities. In the results, we will present a series of empirically based categories, obtained from the grounded theory model: time, senses, social fabric, subjective work and the experience in daily life. In relation to the results, these show that reading is a practice that enables a space for encounters with oneself but also with others, an experience that can be observed later.

Resumen El presente artículo es el resultado de una investigación cuyo propósito fue identificar y analizar los principales aspectos que conforman el desarrollo y la adquisición de aprendizajes de la lectura de ficción en la infancia. La investigación se llevó a cabo en cuatro escuelas de la provincia de Córdoba (Argentina). En estas, se implementaron actividades lúdico-literarias a múltiples grupos de niños y niñas estudiantes, con el objetivo de determinar cómo estas potencian la lectura a través de un vínculo lúdico. A partir de un diseño cualitativo, basado en observaciones y entrevistas individuales, se identificaron cinco categorías de análisis a partir del modelo de la grounded theory: tiempo, sentidos, tramas sociales, trabajo subjetivo y la experiencia incrustada en la vida cotidiana. Los resultados muestran que la lectura es una práctica que habilita espacios de encuentros con uno mismo, pero también con los otros, una experiencia que puede observarse con posterioridad.

Abstract As a result of the compulsory passage to distance education following COVID-19 pandemic, the meaning and role of the school have been actively debated if not strained. Nostalgia for physical presence and the massive digitalization of teaching and learning processes have generated a set of uncertain challenges that should be faced once the crisis is overcome. This article is the result of a study which sought to identify the main issues and challenges regarding the meaning of the school experience in the era (and after-era) of COVID-19. Based on a hermeneutic approach and a qualitative methodological proposal based on co-design, the results of the analysis of interviews conducted with 21 experts from Argentina, Australia, Chile, Spain, France, England and Venezuela are presented. Among the results, a total of 40 emerging issues about the school and its meaning in the pandemic are proposed. We conclude by recognizing the urgency of revaluing the school as an educational, socializing and transforming institution that generates spaces of encounter, care, critical literacy and exchange.

Resumen A raíz del pasaje obligatorio a la educación a distancia provocado por la pandemia del COVID-19, el sentido y rol de la escuela han sido activamente debatidos y cuando no tensados. La nostalgia de la presencia física y la digitalización masiva de los procesos de enseñanza y aprendizaje han generado un conjunto de retos inciertos a los que habrá que enfrentar una vez que se supere la crisis. Este artículo es el resultado de un estudio que buscó identificar las principales problemáticas y retos sobre el sentido de la experiencia escolar en la era (y post era) del COVID-19. A partir de un enfoque hermenéutico y una propuesta metodológica cualitativa basada en el enfoque de codiseño participativo, se da a conocer los resultados de los análisis de entrevistas realizadas a 21 voces expertas provenientes de España, Francia, Inglaterra, Argentina, Chile y Venezuela. Entre los resultados se proponen un total de 40 interrogantes emergentes sobre la escuela y su sentido en la pandemia. Se concluye reconociendo la urgencia de revalorizar la escuela como institución educativa, socializadora y transformadora, generadora de espacios de encuentro, cuidado, alfabetización crítica e intercambio.

ABSTRACT Melon is a vegetable of great socioeconomic importance, and its cultivation is carried out under different production systems. The protected cultivation of melon can be carried out in coconut shell fiber, which is a substrate widely used in olericulture, but little information is available regarding its continuous use in more than one cultivation cycle. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the performance of muskmelon hybrids as a function of the reuse of coconut shell fiber with fertigation in a protected environment. The experiment was carried out in a greenhouse from March to July 2008 and designed in randomized blocks in a 2×3 factorial arrangement, with four replications. The factors consisted of two hybrids (‘Bonus 2’ and ‘Fantasy’) and three types of substrate (S1: new coconut shell fiber; S2: coconut shell fiber reused once in sweet pepper cultivation; and S3: coconut shell fiber reused twice, i.e., first in sweet pepper cultivation and then in melon cultivation). Transverse and longitudinal fruit diameter, fruit shape index, transverse and longitudinal locule diameter, locule shape index, peduncle insertion diameter, mesocarp thickness, firmness, skin netting, fresh mass, soluble solids, titratable acidity, pH, and yield were evaluated after harvest. Reusing twice the coconut shell fiber as a substrate did not affect the agronomic and physicochemical characteristics of the hybrids Bonus 2 and Fantasy.

RESUMO O meloeiro é uma hortaliça de grande importância socioeconômica, sendo seu cultivo realizado em diferentes sistemas produção. Em ambiente protegido o cultivo do meloeiro pode ser realizado em em fibra da casca de coco, que é um substrato amplamente utilizado na olericultura, contudo, poucas informações existem quanto ao uso continuo de um mesmo substrato em mais de um ciclo de cultivo. Assim, objetiva-se avaliar o desempenho de híbridos de melão rendilhado em função da reutilização da fibra da casca de coco com fertirrigação em ambiente protegido. O experimento foi conduzido em casa de vegetação de março a julho de 2008. O experimento foi delineado em blocos casualizados, esquema fatorial 2x3, com quatro repetições. Os fatores foram dois híbridos, ‘Bônus no 2’ e ‘Fantasy’ e três tipos de utilização de substrato (S1 = fibra da casca de coco nova; S2 = fibra da casca de coco reutilizada uma vez na cultura do pimentão; e, S3 = fibra da casca de coco reutilizada por duas vezes, 1a na cultura do pimentão e 2a na cultura do melão). Após a colheita foram avaliados: diâmetro transversal e longitudinal do fruto, índice de formato de fruto, diâmetro transversal e longitudinal do lóculo, índice de formato do lóculo, diâmetro da inserção do pedúnculo, espessura do mesocarpo, firmeza, rendilhamento da casca, massa fresca, sólidos solúveis, acidez titulável, pH e produtividade. Com base nos resultados, concluiu-se o reuso de fibra da casca de coco como substrato por duas vezes não alterou as características agronômicas e físico-químicas dos híbridos Bônus n.2 e Fantasy.

RESUMO A batata-doce é uma hortaliça de grande importância na alimentação humana, devido ao seu alto valor nutritivo. Apresenta alta variação fenotípica, com diversas formas de raízes, folhas e ramas. Diante do exposto, objetivou-se estudar a divergência genética de genótipos de batata-doce por meio de caracteres morfoagronômicos. O experimento foi conduzido em área experimental da Unesp, Câmpus de Ilha Solteira, situada no município de Selvíria-MS. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi de blocos casualizados com duas repetições, incluindo 200 genótipos e ‘Beauregard’ como testemunha biofortificada. Foram avaliados caracteres morfoagronômicos de parte aérea dos genótipos aos 110 dias e de raiz aos 127 dias, após o plantio. Com os dados obtidos realizou-se análise descritiva em percentual das classes fenotípicas. Para estudo da divergência genética realizou-se análise multivariada, agrupando-se pelos métodos de Tocher & Ward. Também realizou-se análise da contribuição relativa de cada carácter para a divergência genética. As análises estatísticas foram feitas utilizando-se o programa computacional Genes e SAS. Há ampla diversidade genética na população estudada, o que pode possibilitar ganhos genéticos na recombinação dos genótipos. O método de agrupamento de Tocher foi mais efetivo para discriminação da dissimilaridade entre os genótipos. A baixa importância relativa dos caracteres tamanho da folha, diâmetro do internódio e cor secundária da casca, permite dispensar a sua análise em futuros trabalhos, reduzindo gastos de mão-de-obra, custo e tempo de execução.

ABSTRACT Sweet potato is a vegetable of great importance in human consumption, due to its high nutritional value. It presents high phenotypic variation, with different forms of roots, leaves and vines. Given the above, we aimed to study the genetic divergence of sweet potato genotypes based on morpho-agronomic traits. The experiment was conducted in an experimental area of Unesp, Ilha Solteira Campus, located in Selvíria-MS. The experimental design used was randomized blocks with two replicates, including 200 genotypes and ‘Beauregard’ as a biofortified control. Shoot morphological traits of the genotypes were evaluated at 110 days and root morphological traits were evaluated at 127 days after planting. We used the obtained data to perform descriptive analysis, in percentage of phenotypic classes. In order to study genetic divergence, multivariate analysis was performed, grouping was done using Tocher’s and Ward’s methods. We also analyzed relative contribution of each trait for genetic divergence. Statistical analyzes were performed using Genes software and SAS. Wide genetic variability could be verified in the population studied in this experiment, being possible to obtain genetic gains in recombination between genotypes. Grouping using Tocher’s method was more effective for discriminating dissimilarity between genotypes. The low relative importance of leaf size, internode diameter and secondary peel color makes further evaluation of these traits unnecessary, reducing labor costs, cost and execution time.
