ABSTRACT This study is based on the hypothesis that unmanaged plantations of commercial species do not prevent understory colonization by native species. The research aimed to describe the floristic composition and structure of native arboreal species in the understory of a Corymbia citriodora stand. To this end, 112 plots (10 × 10 m; 1.12 ha) were installed. Six hundred native tree individuals distributed in 54 species, 44 genera, and 20 families were recorded. The regeneration diversity and evenness indices were 3.23 and 0.81, respectively. Native regeneration of C. citriodora understory shows features typical of semideciduous seasonal forests and seems to be at the early stage of regeneration. Results suggest that C. citriodora stands do not prevent understory colonization by native species.

RESUMO O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar e comparar a densidade (Ds), o teor de carbono (C) e de nitrogênio (N), estoque de carbono (EstC) e de nitrogênio (EstN) e a abundância natural de δ13C no perfil do solo de uma área de Floresta Estacional Semidecidual (FES) convertida em monocultura eucalipto (Corymbia citriodora) (ERN), visando elucidar as mudanças ocorridas nesse ambiente. Para isso, foram coletadas amostras de terra em profundidades de até um metro em cada área de estudo. A conversão da FES para monocultura na área de ERN reduziu a Ds, o N e a EstC na camada superficial, no entanto foi observado um aumento na EstC nas camadas mais profundas do solo. O sinal isotópico de δ13C da vegetação que antes ocupava as áreas do plantio C. citriodora era semelhante ao encontrado atualmente na área de FES, e a época de conversão foi na profundidade 0,40 m do perfil do solo.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the density (Ds) and content of carbon (C) and nitrogen (N), carbon (Cstock) and nitrogen stock (Nstock), and the natural abundance of δ13C in the soil profile of an area of Semideciduous Forest (SF) converted to eucalyptus monoculture (Corymbia citriodora) (ERN) in order to elucidate the changes in these environments. For this purpose, soil samples were collected at depths up to one meter in each study area. The conversion of FES to monocultures reduced Ds, N and EstC in the surface layer. However, there was an increase in EstC in the deeper soil layers. The δ13C isotopic signal of the vegetation that once occupied areas of C. citriodora plantation was similar to that currently found in the area of SF, and the time of conversion was at the depth of 0,40 m in the soil profile.

O Cerrado é uma das principais regiões de expansão agropecuária do país, entretanto a fragilidade dos seus ecossistemas restringe a capacidade de suporte a muitas das atividades agrícolas e compromete a preservação da sua biodiversidade. O objetivo deste estudo foi definir padrões locais de características edáficas e vegetacionais, em uma sub-bacia em Rio Pardo de Minas (MG), como base para o planejamento local de uso sustentável. Para tal, foram utilizadas técnicas de levantamento fitossociológico e de solos associadas à análise estatística multivariada, dendrograma e análise de componentes principais, de forma a correlacionar distribuição espacial de grupos de espécies e atributos edáficos. Os resultados indicaram a ordenação dos ambientes em dois grupos, em função da natureza dos materiais de origem: arenítico-quartzítico e sedimentos argilo-arenosos e argilosos. A seleção de variáveis pela análise multivariada foi capaz de discriminar os ambientes representados no levantamento fitossociológico. Os padrões identificados pelos agricultores corresponderam, em geral, às variações nos parâmetros florísticos e fitossociológicos e aos atributos edáficos, entre estes a densidade absoluta, a área basal e o índice de diversidade; as frações granulométricas foram determinantes na diferenciação dos ambientes.

The Cerrado is one of the main Brazilian expanding regions for agriculture, but the fragility of its ecosystems limits the support capacity for agriculture activities, jeopardizing the preservation of its biodiversity. The objective of this study was to define local patterns of edaphic and vegetation characteristics, of a small watershed in Rio Pardo de Minas municipality (Minas Gerais State, Brazil), as the basis for the sustainable planning for local usage. For such, techniques of phytosociological survey and soils were applied and associated to multivariate statistical procedures, dendrogram and PCA, in order to correlate the spatial distribution of groups of species with soil attributes. The results showed the classification of the environments into two groups, based on the nature of parent materials: arenitic-quartzitic and sandy-clayey and clayey sediments. The selection of variables using the multivariate analysis was able to discriminate the environments represented in the phytosociological plots. The patterns identified by the local farmers corresponded, in general, to the variations in the floristic and phytosociological parameters and edaphic attributes. The absolute density, basal area, Shannon index and the granulometric fractions were the determinant parameters in the differentiation of the environments.

RESUMO Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar a diversidade e a similaridade florística de ambientes de Cerrado, sob diferentes níveis de antropização por uso agrícola e extrativismo, e gerar base de dados para subsidiar propostas de desenvolvimento sustentável para a região Norte de Minas e sistemas de agricultura tradicional. Foram amostradas 4 áreas nos seguintes ambientes: Areião, Areiãozinho, Chapada de Latossolo e Tabuleiro, cujas identificações foram feitas a partir de informantes-chave na Comunidade Água Boa, em Rio Pardo de Minas (MG). As unidades amostrais foram distribuídas em 8 parcelas de 20 x 50 m, com 5 subparcelas. Foram medidos indivíduos arbóreos com circunferência ao nível do solo maior ou igual a 15 cm. Para análise dos índices fitossociológicos foram calculados os parâmetros densidade, dominância, freqüência, área basal e valor de importância, para cada ambiente. Para a diversidade florística foi calculado o índice de Shannon (H’) e para análise da similaridade o índice de Jaccard (Sij). Em todos os ambientes, foi encontrado um total de 477 indivíduos, distribuídos em 21 famílias, com 48 espécies botânicas identificadas e 27 indivíduos não identificados. As cinco famílias mais importantes (maior VI) foram Fabaceae/Papilionoideae, Apocynaceae, Vochysiaceae, Sapotaceae e Fabaceae/Caesalpinoideae. Já as dez espécies de maior importância foram Pouteria ramiflora, Dalbergia miscolobium, Hancornia speciosa, Macherium opacum, Sclerolobium paniculatum var. subvelutinum, Qualea grandiflora, Aspidosperma tomentosum, Byrsonima pachyphylla, Vochysia thyrsoidea e Hymenaea stigonocarpa. O índice H’ foi de 3,01; 2,72; 2,48 e 2,09 para Areião, Areiãozinho, Chapada do Latossolo e Tabuleiro, respectivamente. O índice Sij indicou, para todas as combinações entre os ambientes, que existia pouca similaridade florística entre eles.

ABSTRACT The objective of the study was to evaluate diversity and floristic similarity of Cerrado environments, under different levels of anthropization for agricultural usage and extractivism, and to generate a database to subsidize sustainable development proposals for the North region of Minas Gerais State, and traditional agriculture systems. Four areas with different levels of anthropization were sampled, in the following environments: “Areião, Areiãozinho, Chapada de Latossolo and Tabuleiro”, whose identifications had been made from key informers in the Água Boa Community, in Rio Pardo de Minas (MG, Brazil). The sampled units were distributed in 8 parcels of 20 x 50 m, with 5 subplots. The trees with circumference at ground level of 15 cm or bigger were measured. For analysis of the phytosociology indexes the following parameters were calculated for each environment: density, dominance, frequency, basal area, and importance value. For the floristic diversity the Shannon (H') was calculated, and for the analysis of similarity the index of Jaccard index (Sij). In all the environments, it was found a total of 477 individuals, distributed in 21 families, with 48 botanical species identified, and 27 individuals not identified. The five most important (importance value) families was Fabaceae/Papilionoideae, Apocynaceae, Vochysiaceae, Sapotaceae and Fabaceae/Caesalpinoideae. And the ten most important species was Pouteria ramiflora, Dalbergia miscolobium, Hancornia speciosa, Macherium opacum, Sclerolobium paniculatum var. subvelutinum, Qualea grandiflora, Aspidosperma tomentosum, Byrsonima pachyphylla, Vochysia thyrsoidea and Hymenaea stigonocarpa. The H' index was of 3.01; 2.72; 2.48 and 2.09 for “Areião, Areiãozinho, Chapada de Latossolo and Tabuleiro”, respectively. The Sij index indicated a small floristic similarity for all the combinations between the environments.

Um dos desafios para construção de modelos agrícolas que se referenciam pela sustentabilidade é a utilização de conhecimentos científicos adequados a singulares situações sociais. Para isso, é necessário considerar saberes acumulados por agricultores no espaço e no tempo. No caso do recurso 'solos', pouco desse saber é considerado no ensino em ciência do solo e nos trabalhos de pedologia. Por isso, a aplicação de tecnologias geradas com base no conhecimento científico é limitada quando destinada a grupos tradicionais, principalmente pela não-adequação às necessidades por eles reconhecidas. O objetivo deste estudo foi apresentar uma abordagem integrada entre os saberes de pedólogos e de agricultores, utilizando-se a hierarquização de ambientes no Cerrado pelos agricultores como ferramenta para compreender as bases sob as quais essa relação pode ocorrer. O estudo baseou-se em características ambientais e sociais da Comunidade Água Boa 2, em Rio Pardo de Minas (MG), onde, por trabalho de campo, foi possível analisar a terminologia local e, assim, descrever os ambientes, classificar as terras e constituir diálogos acerca do ambiente do Cerrado e dos solos.

One of the challenges of constructing agricultural systems that aim to be sustainable, is the usage of scientific knowledge adapted to the peculiar social situation. For this purpose it is necessary to consider the knowledge that farmers accumulated over time and space. In the case of the soil resources, a modest amount of the local knowledge is considered in classrooms and in soil research. This is a constraint to the application of technologies based on local scientific knowledge involving traditional farmer groups, mainly because of the lack of adaptation to the needs they are aware of. The objective of this study is to show a new methodology that integrates the pedologists' and local farmers' knowledge. The traditional local hierarchy of environments in the Cerrado region was used as a tool to understand how this relationship can be constructed. The study was developed based on environmental and social parameters in the Água Boa 2 community, in Rio Pardo de Minas, state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. It was possible to analyze the local terminology in a field survey and to describe the environments, to classify the land types, and to establish active dialogues about the Cerrado and its soils.

ABSTRACT This work had as objective to evaluate litter deposition in two secondary semideciduous forest areas: Medium Status Forest (MSF) and Advanced Status Forest (ASF), located in Pinheiral county, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. For litter deposition evaluation, in each area were set 10 litter traps in the beginning of 1998. The material was dried in an oven (65°C ± 5) and separated in leaves, branches, flowers, fruits, rinds and others. The MSF area showed higher litter deposition variation in relation to ASF area. In the MSF area the highest litter value was 13.14 t ha-1 and 9.40 t ha-1 the lowest.

RESUMO Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar o aporte de serapilheira em duas áreas de floresta estacional semidecidual de sucessão secundária, sendo estas: Floresta de Estádio Médio (FEM) e Floresta de Estádio Avançado (FEA), localizadas no município de Pinheiral, RJ. Para avaliação do aporte de serapilheira foram instalados 20 coletores cônicos no início do ano de 1998 em cada área. Após a coleta, o material foi secado em estufa (65°C ± 5) e triado em folhas, ramos, flores, frutos, cascas e outros. A área de FEM apresentou maior variação com relação ao aporte de material formador da serapilheira (MFS) do que a área de FEA. Na área de FEM o maior valor de MFS aportado foi de 13,14 t ha-1 ano1e o menor foi de 9,40 t ha-1 ano1. Na área de FEA o maior valor foi de 10,94 t ha-1 ano1 e o menor foi de 10,72 t ha-1 ano1.

RESUMO Para a avaliação da deposição da serapilheira, foi conduzido um experimento em duas áreas de floresta secundária em diferentes graus de regeneração, floresta secundária inicial (FSI) e floresta secundária tardia (FST), no município de Pinheiral (RJ) no o ano de 1998. O aporte de serapilheira foi determinado por meio de coletores cônicos. A maior taxa de deposição de material decíduo, 4,03 t. ha-1, ocorreu na área de floresta secundária tardia (FST) no inverno. Em ambas as áreas, FST e FSI, a maior contribuição, em todas as estações, foi das folhas. Não foram verificadas diferenças na composição química do material decíduo entre estações.

ABSTRACT An experiment was carried out to evaluate the contribution of the litter deposition under forest coverage in different stages of regeneration, initial secondary forest (ISF) and late secondary forest (LSF) in Pinheiral, RJ, in 1998. Litter deposition was measured in litter traps. The highest input of litter, 4.03 ton. ha1, was observed in LST, in winter. In both areas the highest input was verified in winter, and the leaves were the most important contributor. The chemical composition of litter did not show difference among the seasons.
