ABSTRACT The seeds and seedlings morphological differentiation is a challenge in the early stages of plant growth. This study aims to describe the physical and morphological characteristics of seeds and seedlings of Jatropha mollissima to delimit differences between other species from the same genus. The seeds were placed to germinate for morphological description and their physical characteristics were measured. The J. mollissima presented a 1000-seed weight of 332 g, 3,008 seeds per kilogram, 6.7% of moisture, 1.29 cm length, 0.84 cm width, and 0.66 cm thickness. We verified that the seeds are oval in shape; their colour is dark brown, greyish or mixed colour; they have visible raphe and hilum, and caruncle with beige coloration. The endosperm is oleaginous and involves the embryo with foliaceous and spatulate cotyledons. The embryo is axial, and the hypocotyl-radicle axis has a short cylindrical shape. Germination is epigeal and phanerocotyledonary; leaves have dimorphism and serrated margins with simple trichomes; and their apex is cuspidate or attenuated. Our research demonstrates that it is possible to differentiate J. mollissima from other species of the same genus through morphological characteristics. Resumo O estudo objetivou analisar a estrutura, composição e diversidade de espécies arbóreas do fragmento florestal urbano do Parque Natural Municipal da Lajinha (Juiz de Fora, MG, Brasil). Foram alocadas 25 parcelas de 20 x 20 m (1 ha), onde foram mensurados todos os indivíduos com DAP ≥ 5cm. Foram amostrados 1393 indivíduos vivos, pertencentes a 155 espécies e 51 famílias botânicas. As espécies com maiores VI foram: Nectandra nitidula (15,0), Eugenia hiemalis (12,6), Bathysa australis (9,94), Virola bicuhyba (8,71) e Alchornia triplinervia (8,02). O índice de diversidade de espécies de Shannon foi um dos mais altos para as florestas da região (H’ = 4,36 nats.ind-1). O elevado índice de equabilidade de Pielou (J’ = 0,87) e as análises multivariadas (agrupamento e DCA) mostraram alta heterogeneidade florística na comunidade. Complementarmente, a presença de espécies raras da flora de MG e de espécies nacionalmente ameaçadas (Ocotea odorifera, Virola bicuhyba, Dicksonia sellowiana) evidenciam a área como importante relicto de conservação da biodiversidade na paisagem urbana.

Abstract We aim to analyze the structure, composition and diversity of tree species of the urban forest fragment of the Lajinha Municipal Natural Park (Juiz de Fora, MG, Brazil). 25 plots of 20 x 20 m (1 ha) were randomly allocated, where all individuals with DBH ≥ 5 cm were measured. We sampled 1393 living individuals belonging to 155 species and 51 botanical families. The five species with the highest VI were: Nectandra nitidula (15,0), Eugenia hiemalis (12,6), Bathysa australis (9,94), Virola bicuhyba (8,71) and Alchornia triplinervia (8,02). The diversity index of Shannon was one of the highest for the region's forests (H '= 4.36 nats.ind-1). The high Pielou equability index (J’ = 0.87) and the multivariate analyzes (cluster analysis and DCA) showed high floristic heterogeneity in the community. In a complementary way, the presence of rare species of the MG flora and nationally threatened species (Ocotea odorifera, Virola bicuhyba, Dicksonia sellowiana) evidences the area as an important conservation area of biodiversity in the urban landscape.

RESUMO O objetivo deste estudo foi prospectar, dentre as espécies de crescimento espontâneo em aterros compactados, plantas nativas da Caatinga com potencial para cobertura de solo em áreas extremamente impactadas, de solo exposto. Inicialmente, foi realizado um levantamento florístico geral nas quatro áreas do estudo. Para prospectar as espécies, foram coletados, em cada área, dados referentes à riqueza, cobertura e ao adensamento das plantas do estrato herbáceo, utilizando-se o método de parcelas. A seleção balizou-se nas características espécie-específicas: origem, hábito, ciclo de vida, propagação, síndrome de dispersão, cobertura, adensamento e efeito alelopático. O inventário florístico geral revelou a presença de 73 espécies pertencentes a 63 gêneros e 26 famílias botânicas. No levantamento da cobertura e adensamento do estrato herbáceo, foram encontradas 33 espécies pertencentes a 32 gêneros e 16 famílias, sendo as mais representativas; Fabaceae (5), Malvaceae (5) e Poaceae (5). Quanto à origem, 26 são nativas, 1 naturalizada e 6 exóticas, das quais 66,6% na família Poaceae. Além disso, a maioria dessas espécies são ervas, com ciclo de vida anual, disseminação por meio de sementes e apresentam dispersão autocórica. A cobertura e o adensamento dessas espécies variaram de 0,44% a 9,5% de área e 1 a 4,44 de indivíduos/m2, respectivamente. As espécies Senna uniflora, Rhaphiodon echinus, Sida galheirensis, Mesosphaerum suaveolens, Hexasepalum teres, Waltheria rotundifolia, Trianthema portulacastrum e Herissantia crispa apresentaram potencial para utilização em planos de recuperação de áreas degradadas baseado nos resultados apresentados por cada uma delas nos parâmetros analisados, especialmente na cobertura, adensamento, síndrome de dispersão e ciclo de vida.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to prospect, among the species that grow spontaneously in compacted landfills, native Caatinga plants with potential for ground cover in extremely impacted areas, with exposed soil. Initially, a general floristic survey was carried out in the four study areas. To prospect the species, data referring to the richness, coverage, and densification of plants in the herbaceous stratum were collected in each study area, using the method of plots. The selection was based on species-specific characteristics: origin, plant habit, life cycle, propagation, dispersion syndrome, coverage, densification, and allelopathic effect. The general floristic inventory revealed the presence of 73 species belonging to 63 genera and 26 botanical families. In the survey of the coverage and densification of the herbaceous stratum, 33 species belonging to 32 genera and 16 families were found, being the most representative: Fabaceae (5), Malvaceae (5), and Poaceae (5). As for the origin, 26 are native, one is naturalized, and six are exotic, of which 66.6% are in the Poaceae family. Moreover, most of these species are herbs, with an annual life cycle, dissemination through seeds, and present autochoric dispersion. The coverage and densification of these species ranged from 0.44% to 9.5% of the area and 1 to 4.44 of individuals/m2, respectively. The species Senna uniflora, Rhaphiodon echinus, Sida galheirensis, Mesosphaerum suaveolens, Hexasepalum teres, Waltheria rotundifolia, Trianthema portulacastrum, and Herissantia crispa showed potential for use in recovery plans for degraded areas based on the results presented by each of them in the parameters analyzed, especially in coverage, densification, dispersion syndrome, and life cycle.

Resumo O Jardim Botânico da Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora (JB-UFJF) compreende significativo remanescente de Floresta Atlântica em área urbana no município de Juiz de Fora. Objetivando conhecer sua flora, foram realizadas coletas quinzenais na área de 80 hectares delimitada pelo JB-UFJF nos anos de 2011 a 2014. A coleção está depositada no Herbário CESJ da Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora. Foram registradas 436 espécies, distribuídas em 270 gêneros e 96 famílias. As famílias mais ricas foram Fabaceae (35 spp.), Melastomataceae (27 spp.), Rubiaceae (27 spp.), Solanaceae (21 spp.) e Asteraceae (21 spp.). Os gêneros mais ricos foram Miconia (15 spp.), Piper (12 spp.), Psychotria (9 spp.) e Solanum (8 spp.). Seis espécies encontradas na área estão em alguma categoria de ameaça na Lista Nacional Oficial de Espécies da Flora Ameaçadas de Extinção. A composição florística mostrou ser similar a outros levantamentos na região tanto na flora geral quanto por estratos, porém também evidenciou regionalismos florísticos tanto em escala local quanto regional. A alta riqueza de espécies e outras particularidades encontradas revelam a importância da área para conservação, enfatizando sua posição como corredor ecológico na Zona da Mata, no contexto do Corredor Ecológico da Serra da Mantiqueira.

Abstract The Botanical Garden of the Federal University of Juiz de Fora (JB-UFJF) comprises significant Atlantic Forest remnant in urban area of Juiz de Fora municipality. Aiming to know its flora, collections were carried biweekly in the 80 hectares of the JB-UFJF from 2011 to 2014. The collection is deposited in the Herbarium CESJ of the Federal University of Juiz de Fora. 436 species were found, distributed in 270 genera and 96 families. The richest families were Fabaceae (35 spp.), Melastomataceae (27 spp.), Rubiaceae (27 spp.), Solanaceae (21 spp.) and Asteraceae (21 spp.). The richest genera were Miconia (15 spp.), Piper (12 spp.), Psychotria (9 spp.) and Solanum (8 spp.). Six species found in the area are in some category of threat according to the Red List of the Brazilian Flora. The floristic composition showed to be similar to other surveys in the region both in the general flora and by strata, but also evidenced floristic regionalisms both locally and regionally. The high species richness and other particularities found reveal the importance of the area for conservation, highlighting its position as an ecological corridor in the Zona da Mata, in the context of the Ecological Corridor of Serra da Mantiqueira.

Resumo: Estudos sobre a ecofisiologia das sementes são importantes para compreender os mecanismos de adaptação e os limites de tolerância das espécies às condições naturais, pois determinam seu potencial uso em recuperação de áreas degradadas. Objetivou-se neste estudo caracterizar e avaliar o efeito de diferentes temperaturas, métodos de superação de dormência e estresses hídrico e salino na germinação de Senna uniflora. Realizou-se curva de embebição e testes de germinação para avaliar o efeito dos regimes de temperatura (20 °C, 25 °C, 30 °C, 35 °C, 40 °C e 20-30 °C), dos métodos de superação de dormência (sem escarificação, escarificação mecânica, química e térmica) e dos estresses hídrico e salino nos potenciais osmóticos (0,0; -0,2; -0,4 e -0,8 MPa). As variáveis avaliadas foram porcentagem de germinação, índice de velocidade de germinação e tempo médio de germinação. Os métodos de escarificação mecânica e química a 5, 15 e 30 min, foram eficientes para superar a dormência física, sobretudo nos regimes de temperatura constante de 25 °C e 30 °C e alternada 20-30 °C. Sob condições de estresse hídrico e salino a germinação foi reduzida com o aumento do potencial osmótico, sendo -0,8 MPa o limite mínimo de germinação, além disso sementes foram mais sensíveis ao estresse hídrico do que ao estresse salino.

Abstract: Studies on seeds ecophysiology are important to understanding of adaptation mechanisms and of species´ tolerance limits to natural conditions, because determine the potential of use in recovery plans of degraded areas. The aim of this study was to characterize and assess the effect of different temperatures, methods of dormancy overcoming and water and salt stresses on the germination of Senna uniflora. Imbibition curve and germination assay were conducted to assess the effect of temperature regimes (20 °C, 25 °C, 30 °C, 35 °C, 40 °C and 20-30 °C), of methods of overcoming dormancy (without scarification, mechanical scarification, chemical scarification and thermal scarification) and of water and salt stresses at the osmotic potentials (0.0; -0.2; -0.4 and -0.8 MPa) . The assessed variables were germination, germination speed index and average germination time. Methods of mechanical and chemical scarification for 5, 15 and 30 min were efficient to overcome physical dormancy, especially on constant temperature regimes of 25 °C and 30 °C and alternated 20-30 °C. Submitted to conditions of water and salt stresses, seeds germination was reduced with the increase of the osmotic potential, being -0.8 MPa the germination minimum limit, in addition, seeds were more sensitive to water stress than to salt stress.

ABSTRACT The present study seeks to characterize the composition, structure, and functional traits of the tree stratum of a Semideciduous Forest in Pouso Alegre, MG, Brazil (22º12’43”S and 45º59’30”W), by comparing Edge and Interior habitats and their relation to human impacts and soil variables. The tree community (diameter at 1.3 m (DBH) higher than 5 cm) was inventoried using the point-centered quarter method by laying out 12 transects of 450 m each (six transects in the Edge and six in the Interior). Functional traits – wood density and seed mass – were obtained by genus. The impact evaluation and soil sample collection were realized per transect. We found significant differences in terms of the basal area (higher in Interior), diversity (higher in Interior) and community seed mass (higher in Edge). The effects of higher values of soil traits such as Calcium, Magnesium, cation sum (CS) and base saturation (V) on species composition were stronger in the Interior, while human induced impacts and soil Potassium had an overwhelming effect on the Edge.

O presente trabalho objetivou responder a seguinte pergunta: A heterogeneidade ambiental influencia a comunidade arbórea? Para isso avaliou-se a interferência da composição e estrutura da comunidade arbórea localizada em inselberg sobre a comunidade arbórea da matriz na qual o inselberg está inserido. Para isso fez-se uma CCA (análise de correspondência canônica) sobre uma matriz de abundância das espécies de 40 parcelas amostradas em dois fragmentos, um de Floresta Estacional Semidecidual (FES) e outro constituído por mata ciliar, corredor e inselbergs. Foi construído um dendrograma de similaridade para as quatro áreas utilizando o índice de Dice-Sorensen e o método de ligação UPGMA. A análise de espécies indicadoras foi usada para avaliar quais espécies foram características de cada área amostrada. Os autovalores dos dois primeiros eixos foram altos, evidenciando uma forte substituição das espécies. As correlações entre variáveis ambientais e parcelas indicaram a formação de três grupos: o primeiro formado pelas parcelas do fragmento FES, com alto teor de argila; o segundo grupo formado pelas parcelas do corredor e dos inselbergs, que não se separaram tão nitidamente como o primeiro grupo, apresentando uma pequena separação quanto ao teor de matéria orgânica; e o terceiro grupo, formado pelas parcelas da mata ciliar, com alto teor de magnésio, cálcio, soma de bases e saturação de bases, sendo solos de maior fertilidade. Os resultados evidenciaram alta substituição de espécies entre as áreas, indicando que, apesar de ser bem próximas, a presença do inselberg aumentou a heterogeneidade ambiental, o que afeta diretamente a variação, tanto na composição de espécies quanto na estrutura entre as áreas.

This study aimed to answer the following question: Does habitat heterogeneity affect the tree community? To answer that question, we evaluated the influence of the species composition and structure of the tree community of inselbergs on the tree community of the matrix where the inselberg is located. The correlations between environmental and vegetation gradients were analyzed by canonical correspondence analysis of a species composition matrix constructed from abundance data of 40 plots sampled in two areas, one composed of seasonal semideciduous forest (SSF) and another with riparian forests, a vegetation corridor, and inselbergs. A similarity dendrogram of the four areas was calculated using the Dice-Sorensen index and UPGMA linkage method. The species indicator analysis was used to evaluate which species were characteristic of each area sampled. The eigenvalues of the first two axes were high indicating high species turnover. The correlations between environmental variables and plots indicated the formation of three groups: the first one formed by the SSF patch plots with high clay content; the second group formed by the vegetation corridor and inselberg plots, which did not separate as sharply as the first group, with a small separation in organic matter content; and the third group, formed by the riparian forest plots, which are located in areas of highest soil fertility, with high content of calcium, sum of bases and base saturation. The results showed high species turnover among areas, indicating that even though the areas are geographically close, the occurrence of inselbergs increased habitat heterogeneity, directly affecting the variation in species composition and community structure among areas.

A savana brasileira forma um mosaico de fitofisionomias que está relacionado a fatores edáficos e topográficos, ocorrência de fogo e perturbações antrópicas. O objetivo deste trabalho foi fazer uma análise comparativa entre duas áreas de cerrado localizadas no sudoeste goiano (Ouroana e Montes Claros de Goiás), relacionando a estrutura e composição florística da vegetação às características edáficas. Foram utilizadas 25 parcelas de 20 × 20 m. Todos os indivíduos com CAP ≥15 cm foram mensurados. Para o estudo do solo, foram realizadas análises físicas e químicas com amostras coletadas de 0-20 cm de profundidade. Para verificar as possíveis correlações entre as características edáficas e a abundância e distribuição das espécies, foi utilizada a Análise de Correspondência Canônica (CCA). Ouroana apresentou densidade de 1.647 ind/ha e área basal total de 15,57 m2/ha. Nesse ambiente, foram amostradas 107 espécies. Montes Claros de Goiás apresentou densidade de 781 ind/ha e área basal total de 17,62 m2/ha e 120 espécies amostradas. Os solos de Ouroana e Montes Claros de Goiás se apresentaram significativamente diferentes quanto à textura, sendo o de Ouroana arenoso e o de Montes Claros variando entre as texturas média e argilosa. As duas áreas possuem solos distróficos; porém, o de Montes Claros é mais fértil e o de Ouroana caracteriza-se por ser aluminotóxico. As espécies estão distribuídas de acordo com os níveis de fertilidade do solo. A CCA agrupou espécies de acordo com as características edáficas que definiram a localização e a abundância das espécies, bem como as fitofisionomias das áreas estudadas.

The Brazilian savanna is a mosaic of phytophysiognomies influenced by edaphic and topographic factors that range from the occurrence of fires to anthropic disturbance. The goal of this study was a comparative analysis between two cerrado areas in southeastern Goiás, relating the floristic composition and structure of the vegetation to soil properties to better understand the physiognomic characteristics of the region. Twenty-five 20 × 20 m plots were used. All plants with circumference at breast height of more than 15 cm were measured. Soil samples collected at a depth of 0-20 cm were subjected to physical and chemical analyses. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) was used to detect possible correlations between the soil properties and species abundance and distribution. The density and total basal area were 1,647 ind/ha and 15.57 m2/ha, respectively, in Ouroana. At this site, 107 species were sampled. In Montes Claros de Goiás, the density and total basal area were 781 ind/ha and 17.62 m2/ha, and 120 species were sampled. The soil texture of Ouroana was sandy and significantly different from the medium to clayey texture of Montes Claros. The soils of both areas are dystrophic, however, more fertile in Montes Claros and aluminum-toxic in Ouroana. The species of vegetation were distributed according to soil fertility levels. The CCAs grouped species according to soil properties that defined location and abundance as well as the phytophysiognomies of the studied areas.

Este trabalho apresenta o levantamento florístico das plantas vasculares da Reserva Biológica da Represa do Grama, um remanescente de floresta estacional semidecidual do Domínio Atlântico, situado no município de Descoberto, Minas Gerais. Foram realizadas coletas quinzenais de material fértil entre agosto de 1999 e dezembro de 2004. Além do levantamento, fez-se a comparação da composição florística através de análises multivariadas de agrupamento com outras nove áreas (3 de floresta estacional e 6 de ombrófila), cujos levantamentos florísticos de angiospermas tiveram abordagem semelhante. Cada análise foi processada para o conjunto total das espécies e para oito hábitos: árvores (incluindo arvoretas), arbustos, trepadeiras (lenhosas e herbáceas), ervas terrícolas, ervas saxícolas, epífitas, hemiepífitas e parasitas. Na ReBio do Grama foram registradas 644 espécies de angiospermas, distribuídas em 370 gêneros e 100 famílias. Licófitas e samambaias estão representadas por 64 espécies, distribuídas em 37 gêneros e 16 famílias. Seis espécies de angiospermas foram descritas como novas para a ciência. Fabaceae (55 spp.) foi a família com maior riqueza específica, seguida de Rubiaceae (50 spp.), Melastomataceae (28 spp.), Bignoniaceae e Orchidaceae (27 spp. cada) e Myrtaceae (25 spp.). As análises multivariadas sugeriram que os gradientes longitudinais, latitudinais e altitudinais interferem de formas distintas sobre os padrões de riqueza dos diferentes hábitos. O número reduzido de espécies compartilhadas entre as áreas, associado com alta riqueza regionalizada de alguns hábitos demonstra a importância da conservação de fragmentos nas diferentes regiões geográficas da Floresta Atlântica como estratégia para maximizar a conservação da diversidade existente neste domínio fitogeográfico.

The vascular plants survey of a remnant of semideciduous seasonal forest in the Atlantic Forest Biome was carried out in the ReBio do Grama, municipality of Descoberto, Minas Gerais, through forthnightly trips to collect fertile specimens between August 1999 and December 2004. The angiosperms included 644 species distributed in 370 genera and 100 families, including 6 species new to science, while the lycophytes and ferns included 64 species in 37 genera and 16 families. Fabaceae (55 spp.) was the family with the highest number of species, followed by Rubiaceae (50 spp.), Melastomataceae (28 spp.), Bignoniaceae and Orchidaceae (27 spp. each) and Myrtaceae (25 spp.). Once the survey was concluded, a comparison between it and the floristic composition of other nine areas (3 of seasonal and 6 of dense ombrophilous forest) was performed through multivariate analysis. These 9 sites were chosen as their surveys also included all angiosperm habits rather than only woody plants. Each analysis was processed for the all habits and then for each one of the following 8 habits: trees (including treelets), shrubs, climbers (woody and herbaceous), ground-dwelling herbs, rupicolous herbs, epiphytes, hemiepiphytes, and parasites. Multivariate analysis suggested that the longitudinal, latitudinal and altitudinal gradients interfere in different ways over the species richness of diverse habits. The reduced number of species shared between areas, associated to the high regional richness of certain habits shows the importance of conserving forest fragments in different geographical areas of the Atlantic Forest in order to maximize the conservation of the biodiversity within this Domain.

Os inselbergs abrigam uma série de microclimas responsáveis pela diferenciação das condições ecológicas na paisagem, formando um complexo sistema de gradientes, onde muitas vezes pode ser caracterizada como uma área de ecótono. O objetivo desse estudo foi de caracterizar a estrutura da vegetação e correlaciona-la com as variáveis edáficas de diferentes ambientes, em um fragmento de Floresta Estacional Semidecidual Montana, no município de Coqueiral, MG. Foram lançadas 20 parcelas (40x10m e 20x20m) e amostrados todos os indivíduos com CAP ≥15,7 cm. Para o estudo de estrutura foram avaliados dominância absoluta (DoA), densidade absoluta (DA) , valor de cobertura (VC) e freqüência absoluta (FA). Além de uma análise de correspondência canônica (CCA) correlacionando os valores de abundância com variáveis do solo. Encontrou-se uma relação entre o gradiente de distribuição das espécies com as características do solo. A mata ciliar apresentou maior diferença na abundância de espécies em relação às características do solo.

The inselbergs shelter a series of microclimates responsible for the differentiation of ecological conditions in the landscape, forming a complex system of gradients, which can often be characterized as an area of ecotone. The aim of this study was to characterize the vegetation structure and correlates it with the soil characteristics of different environments, in a fragment of semideciduous forest Montana, in the city of Coqueiral, MG. Have been launched 20 plots (40x10m and 20x20m) and sampled all individuals with CAP ≥ 15.7 cm. For the study of structure have been evaluated absolute dominance (DoA), absolute density (AD), cover (VC) and absolute frequency (AF). In a canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) correlating the values of abundance with soil variables. There was a relationship between the gradient distribution of species with soil characteristics, riparian vegetation showed the greatest difference in abundance species in relation to the soil characteristics.

Este estudo avaliou as associações espaciais de indivíduos pertencentes a todas as espécies arbóreas do gênero Miconia presentes no sub-bosque de um plantio experimental de espécies dos gêneros Eucalyptus e Corymbia. Como o gênero Miconia possui a maioria das espécies pioneiras, a hipótese testada foi de que os pares de espécies analisadas apresentam indivíduos com sobreposição total ou parcial de habitat. Considerando o histórico da área, é possível supor que todos os indivíduos se regeneraram a partir da chuva e do banco de sementes. Foi estabelecido um transecto cruzando a área de estudo no sentido de seu maior comprimento, a partir do qual foram determinadas as coordenadas dos indivíduos do gênero Miconia com DAS (diâmetro medido na altura do solo) maior ou igual a 1 cm. As associações espaciais entre os indivíduos das diferentes espécies foram analisadas por meio da função K de Ripley bivariada. Foram amostrados indivíduos de Miconia pepericarpa DC., Miconia sellowiana Naudin, Miconia albicans Triana, Miconia argyrophylla DC., Miconia chartacea Triana e Miconia cinnamomifolia (DC.) Naudin. De forma geral, os resultados demonstraram ausência de associação espacial negativa entre os pares das espécies, indicando que os indivíduos de Miconia spp. compartilham parcial ou totalmente o mesmo espaço no sub-bosque de um plantio de eucalipto. Os resultados obtidos, apesar de não poderem ser extrapolados para outras espécies, corroboram a ideia de que algumas espécies pioneiras tendem a coexistir, em florestas tropicais, em áreas onde há maior disponibilidade de luz.

The objective of this study was to evaluate spatial association of individuals of all genus Miconia spp. tree species established in the understory of an experimental plantation of Eucalyptus and Corymbia species. As most Miconia species are considered pioneers species, the tested hypothesis was that the analyzed species pairs presented individuals with total or partial habitat overlapping. Considering the history of the area, it is possible to assume that all individuals regenerate from the rain and the seed bank. It was established a transect crossing the study area toward its longest length from where it was determined the coordinates of individuals from Miconia genus with DSL (diameter at soil level) greater or equal to 1 cm. Spatial association among individual from different species were analyzed through bivariate Ripley's K function. It was sampled the following species: Miconia pepericarpa DC., Miconia sellowiana Naudin, Miconia albicans Triana, Miconia argyrophylla DC., Miconia chartacea Triana and Miconia cinnamomifolia (DC.) Naudin. Overall, the results demonstrated the lack of negative spatial association between species pairs, indicating that Miconia spp. individuals share partially or totally the same space in a eucalyptus plantation understory. Although the results cannot be extrapolated to other species, they support the idea that some pioneer species tend to coexist in tropical forests, in areas with high light availability.

Resumo Os fragmentos de Mata Atlântica interioranos localizam-se em região de tensão ecológica e carecem de conhecimento sobre os efeitos de impactos antrópicos sobre sua composição e regeneração. Objetivou-se caracterizar e descrever a estrutura e composição da comunidade arbórea em remanescentes florestais localizados em Itumbiara, Goiás, além de analisar as relações florísticas entre esses e outros fragmentos de formações estacionais e de áreas ecotonais. Foram selecionados cinco fragmentos para a amostragem da comunidade arbórea. Foi aplicado o método de quadrantes, sendo alocados, em cada fragmento, transecções lineares contendo 25 pontos, o que resultou no estabelecimento de 125 unidades amostrais. Em cada ponto, foram inventariados os espécimes arbóreos vivos com circunferência a 1,30 m acima do solo >15 cm. As coletas florísticas e o levantamento fitossociológico registraram 149 espécies arbóreas, pertencentes a 110 gêneros e distribuídas em 47 famílias. A análise de similaridade demonstrou o caráter ecotonal, com muitas espécies generalistas e outras de ocorrência mais pontual no Cerrado ou em matas estacionais. Os remanescentes florestais em Itumbiara apresentaram elevada diversidade arbórea. No entanto, a comunidade arbórea sugere relações florísticas mais estreitas com as formações savânicas.

Abstract Hinterland fragments of Atlantic forests situated in transitional areas are poorly known with respect to the effectsof human impacts on their species composition and regeneration. The purpose of this study was to describe andcharacterize the structure and composition of the tree community of forest remnants located in Itumbiara, GoiásState, Central Brazil, and to analyze their floristic relationship with other areas of seasonal and transitionalvegetation ecotones. Five forest fragments were chosen for tree community sampling. The survey was carried outusing PCQ (point-centered quarter) method and 25 points were distributed along linear transects totalling 125sampling units. Four live trees with circumference at breast height (1.30 m) > 15 cm were recorded at each point.The floristic and phytosociological surveys recorded 149 tree species belonging to 110 genera and 47 families.The analysis of similarity confirmed the ecotonal character with many generalist species and other with occasionaloccurrence in 'Cerrado' (woody savanna) and seasonal forests. The forest remnants in Itumbiara showed a hightree species diversity. In spite of this, the tree community species suggests higher similarity with savanna vegetation.

O complexo serrano do Espinhaço Sul é ainda floristicamente desconhecido e a conservação destas serras está ameaçada em função de sua exclusiva riqueza mineral. A Serra do Condado, localizada no município de Serro, MG (18° 37' 30" S e 43° 22' 30" W) é um bom exemplo de como as atividades de mineração estão distantes da conservação destes ecossitemas e por tal razão o presente estudo teve como objetivo a caracterização florística e fitofisionômica desta serra. As campanhas de campo foram quinzenais e ocorreram entre os meses de maio/2006 a maio/2007. Foram coletados apenas os materiais botânicos em estágio fenológico reprodutivo. Os mesmos foram incorporados aos acervos dos herbários CESJ, RB e ESAL. O valor em área de cada fisionomia na constituição da paisagem foi feito através do software ArGis 9.0 e a similaridade florística entre as fisionomias foi realizada mediante cálculo do índice de Sørensen. Na área estudada foram encontradas Florestas Estacionais Semideciduais Montanas, Matas Ciliares, Brejos e Vegetação Arbustivo-Lenhosa sobre Canga. A floresta semidecídua montana corresponde a 80% da vegetação local, apresentando 426 espécies (391 exclusivas) distribuídas em 83 famílias. As famílias com maior número de espécies foram Fabaceae (40), Asteraceae (30) e Myrtaceae (30). A floresta ciliar é pouco representativa, cobrindo 5% da área florestada. Nessa formação foram encontradas 74 espécies (54 exclusivas) pertencentes a 28 famílias. As famílias mais representativas foram Fabaceae (sete), Piperaceae (quatro) e Annonaceae (três). Os brejos, devido a perturbações antrópicas, cobrem apenas 2% da área. Por fatores como a saturação hídrica constante essa fitofisionomia apresentou o maior número de espécies exclusivas, 18 das 19 encontradas, sendo Cyperaceae e Melastomataceae (cinco) as famílias mais ricas. A Vegetação arbustivo-lenhosa sobre canga cobre 13% da área. Nela foram encontradas 94 espécies (74 exclusivas), distribuídas em 29 famílias. Asteraceae (nove), Orchidaceae (sete) e Bromeliaceae (cinco) destacaram-se pela riqueza de espécies nessa fisionomia. A flora da Serra do Condado foi diferenciada entre seus hábitats (fitofisionomias), pois os valores obtidos para o índice de Sørensen foram inferiores a 10% em todas as comparações. Isso demonstra o quanto estudo florísticos são fundamentais para o conhecimento da vegetação de áreas extensas geograficamente e diversas biologicamente. A variedade de ambientes apresentados e a riqueza da flora associada às suas formações agregam valor de conservação e manutenção da flora dos complexos serranos do Espinhaço Sul de Minas Gerais.

Little is known about the flora of the Espinhaço Sul range. However, the environmental conservation of such complex has been threatened, mainly due to the potential mineral richness lying there. The aim of this study was to the floristic and physiognomy characterization of Serra do Condado, located in the Serro County, MG. Thus, fortnight field campaigns were carried out during the period of May/2006 to May/2007, in order to collect floristic material and to characterize the area. Furthermore, the value in area of each physiognomic in the constitution of the landscape was made through the software ArGis 9.0 and the floristic similarity among the observed physiognomic aspects, were tested by the Sørensen similarity index. Atlantic Semideciduos Montane Forests, Riparian Forests, Swamps and Woody Shrub Vegetation over "Canga" were found in the area. Semidecidual Forest corresponds to 80% of the local vegetation, presenting 426 species (391 exclusives) distributed in 83 families. The families that had the largest number of species were Fabaceae (40), Asteraceae (30) and Myrtaceae (30). Following came, Woody Shrub Vegetation over "Canga", covers 13% of the studied area, and in it were found 94 species (74 exclusives), distributed among 29 families. Asteraceae (9), Orchidaceae (7) e Bromeliaceae (5) were distinguished by their species abundance in this physiognomy. Riparian Forests are not so representative, constituting only 5% of the forested area. In this physiognomy, 74 species (54 exclusives) belonging to 28 families were found, of these, Fabaceae (7), Piperaceae (4) and Annonaceae (3) were the most representative ones. Due to anthropogenic disturbances, Swamps cover only 2% of the area. As it showed characteristics such as constant hydric saturation it had the highest proportion of exclusive found species, 18 out of 19, being Cyperaceae and Melastomataceae (5) the richest families. The flora found at Serra do Condado was differentiated in relation to their habitats (physiognomies), because the values obtained by the Sørensen index were less than 10% for all other comparisons. This shows how fundamental floristic studies are for knowing the vegetation of areas being both geographically extensive and biologically diverse. The great variety of environment presented and the flora richness associated to this formation aggregate conservation and maintenance value to the Espinhaço Sul range flora, Minas Gerais.

O presente estudo avaliou a diversidade e estrutura da vegetação de fragmentos de floresta aluvial no Município de São Sebastião da Bela Vista, MG, e as principais variáveis ambientais que influenciam essa vegetação. Os estudos das variáveis ambientais (dados de amostras superficiais dos solos, nível freático no solo, cobertura do dossel e impactos ambientais) e da composição e estrutura da vegetação arbórea (DAP ³ 5 cm) foram conduzidos em 54 parcelas de 200 m², alocadas em floresta ciliar com influência aluvial e em cinco fragmentos de floresta aluvial. Nas parcelas, foram registrados 2.064 indivíduos pertencentes a 51 espécies. A análise de correspondência canônica detectou gradiente de distribuição das espécies arbóreas no eixo 1, de acordo com os valores no solo de: profundidade do nível freático, porcentagem de areia e argila e teores de Mg, matéria orgânica e H + Al. O eixo 2 esteve correlacionado com as variáveis cobertura do dossel e porcentagem de silte no solo. Estas variáveis ambientais ocasionaram a formação de grupos de parcelas, de acordo com a distribuição das espécies.

Fragments of alluvial forest in the South of Minas Gerais, Brazil, were studied in order to assess the vegetation structure, tree diversity and the most influential environmental variables on vegetation variations. The environment and vegetation data (dbh ³ 5 cm) were collected in 54, 20 × 10 m, permanents plots allocated in a riverine forest and in five fragments of alluvial forests. In the plots, the survey totalled 2,064 tree individuals, distributed in 51 species. The canonical correspondence analysis detected a tree composition gradient in the first axis, related to Mg, organic matter and H + Al soil content, sand and clay percentage and soil water table level. The CCA second axis was associated with canopy coverage and soil silte percentage. Theses variables caused a plot group formation related to species distribution.

Com o objetivo de verificar a existência de mudanças estruturais e a influência de diferentes classes de solos sobre as taxas de dinâmica da comunidade arbórea, um fragmento de Floresta Estacional Semidecidual Montana (8,7 ha) em Lavras, MG, foi estudado em um período de cinco anos (2000-2005). Os dados foram coletados em 47 parcelas de 20 × 20 m, dispostas em duas transeções, distantes 80 m entre si, cruzando o fragmento no sentido de maior comprimento. No ano de 2000, foram amostrados todos os indivíduos arbóreos com DAP > 5 cm. As informações coletadas para cada indivíduo foram: identificação botânica da espécie e DAP. Em 2005, foram registrados os indivíduos mortos, remensurados os sobreviventes e mensurados e identificados os indivíduos recrutados (DAP > 5 cm). Foram calculadas as taxas de dinâmica: mortalidade, recrutamento, ganho e perda em área basal de cada parcela, para a área total e para cada classe de solo (Nitossolos, Latossolos e Cambissolos). O padrão observado no fragmento foi de redução no número de indivíduos e estabilidade da área basal. Entretanto, não foram identificadas diferenças entre as classes de solos, em relação às taxas de dinâmica. As populações das espécies classificadas como de subdossel aumentaram a dominância ecológica na área. Os resultados permitiram concluir que o fragmento estudado está em uma fase avançada de sucessão pós-distúrbio e as variações espaciais das taxas de dinâmica não apresentaram relações com as classes de solos identificadas na área.

In order to analyze the existence of structural changes and the influence of different soils classes on tree community dynamics rates, a fragment of tropical montane seasonal semi-deciduous forest (8,7 ha) in SE Brazil was studied in a 5 years period (2000-2005). Data were collected in 47, 20 × 20 m, plots arranged in two 80 m distant transect, crossing the study area toward its widest length. In 2000, were surveyed all individuals with DBH > 5 cm. Species botanical identification were provided and diameters at breast height (DBH) were collected for each tree individual. In 2005, all dead trees were recorded, the surviving trees were remeasured and the recruits were measured and identified (DBH > 5 cm). Mortality, recruitments, basal area loss and gain rates were calculated for each plot, for the total area and for each soil class (Nitosols, Oxysols and Cambisols). The overall pattern in the fragment indicated reduction in number of individuals and basal area stability. However, there were no differences among soils classes regarding dynamics rates. The species populations classified as sub-canopy tended to increase its ongoing ecological dominance in the area. The results allowed us to conclude that the studied fragment is in an advanced successional phase post-disturbance and that spatial variations in dynamics rates had no relation with soils classes.
