A especificidade da atividade dos enfermeiros obstetras na assistência do parto é propensa à adoção de posturas e movimentos inadequados, aumentando o stress muscular e nos ligamentos e articulações, bem como o estado de fadiga e o risco de lesões músculo-esqueléticas ligadas ao trabalho (LMELT) pelos transtornos traumáticos cumulativos, com repercussões na sua saúde e qualidade de vida. Razão pela qual que se investiu no ensino e treino em ambiente controlado nos estudantes do Curso de Mestrado em Enfermagem de Saúde Materna e Obstétrica (CMESMO); Objetivos: analisar a perceção dos estudantes do Curso de Mestrado em Saúde Materna e Obstétrica, sobre o contributo da formação para a prevenção do risco de LMELT na sua prática clínica; Identificar as estratégias de prevenção de LMELT adotadas, decorrente formação inserida no CMESMO da Unidade Curricular (UC) de Opção: Biomecânica no Cuidar do Enfermeiro Especialista de Saúde Materna e Obstetrícia (UC-BCEESMO). Métodos: Utilizou-se a técnica grupo focal, realizada online, com a participação de quatro estudantes, para desenvolvimento de estudo de abordagem qualitativa. Organizou-se os dados por meio do software WebQDA® com base na análise de conteúdo dos discursos segundo Bardin. Resultados: Emergiram quatro Categorias: contributos para a consciencialização dos fatores de risco; dificuldades na adoção dos princípios da biomecânica; Estratégias implementadas em estágio e Desafios/Sugestões. Conclusões: Salienta-se a importância da formação realizada aos estudantes, enfermeiros obstetras, sobre necessidade de cumprir os princípios de biomecânica atendendo ao ambiente no contexto de Bloco de Partos, para a prevenção do risco de lesões músculo-esqueléticas ligadas ao trabalho. É preciso investir na formação dos pares e na investigação.

The specific activity of obstetrical nurses in childbirth care is prone to the adoption of inappropriate postures and movements, increasing muscle and ligament and joint stress, as well as the state of fatigue and the risk of work-related musculoskeletal injuries (LMELT) by cumulative traumatic disorders, with repercussions on their health and quality of life. This is why we invested in teaching and training in a controlled environment for students of the Master's Course in Maternal and Obstetric Health (CMESMO); Goals: to analyze the perception of students of the Master's Course in Maternal and Obstetric Health, on the contribution of training to the prevention of the risk of LMELT in their clinical practice; To identify the LMELT prevention strategies adopted, as a result of training included in the CMESMO of the Curricular Unit (UC) of Option: Biomechanics in Caring for Nurse Specialists in Maternal Health and Obstetrics (UC-BCEESMO). Methods: The focus group technique was used, carried out online, with the participation of four students, to develop a study with a qualitative approach. The data was organized using the WebQDA® software based on the content analysis of the speeches according to Bardin. Results: four categories emerged: contributions to awareness of risk factors; difficulties in adopting the principles of biomechanics; Strategies implemented in internship and Challenges/Suggestions. Conclusions: The importance of training given to students, obstetrical nurses, on the need to comply with the principles of biomechanics, taking into account the environment in the context of the Delivery Block, for the prevention of the risk of work-related musculoskeletal injuries, is highlighted. It is necessary to invest in peer training and research.

Resumo: A disseminação mundial da produção científica na área da saúde tem sido um contributo para a prática baseada na evidencia. No entanto, levanta questões centrais à síntese da evidência existente e à utilização do método científico para o fazer, bem como, aos processos utilizados para transferir e implementar o conhecimento nos contextos de prática clínica, que facilitem a tomada de decisão. Temos como objetivo refletir sobre a síntese, transferência e implementação de evidência qualitativa para a melhoria das práticas, da decisão clínica e das políticas de saúde. Considerando a grande evolução da quantidade de estudos de qualitativos, abordaremos a elaboração dos metasumários e das metassínteses, como abordagens metodológicas, para integrar, comparar e sintetizar os resultados de estudos individuais dentro de um corpo maior de evidências, com base em metodologias rigorosas, reprodutíveis e transparentes, para determinar o que é conhecido numa determinada área ou se existem lacunas de evidência que necessitam ser investigadas. Ao longo do capítulo, dividido em seis partes, será abordada a questão conceptual introdutória, seguida da síntese da evidencia qualitativa e da transferência e implementação da síntese qualitativa, apresentamos exemplos de casos práticos, permitindo em seguida partir para a aplicação da proposta na realidade ilustrado com casos práticos. Nas Considerações finais, salientamos que o aumento da Evidência Qualitativa é desafio para o desenvolvimento de revisões sistemáticas de estudos qualitativos, para aumentar a consistência, a confiabilidade, o rigor e a segurança no uso dos achados que emergem destes estudos para uma prática baseada na evidência, que só é possível com o envolvimento de todos os atores (investigadores, académicos, profissionais e cidadãos).

Abstract: The worldwide dissemination of scientific production in the health area has been a contribution to evidence-based practice. However, it raises questions that are central to the synthesis of existing evidence and the use of the scientific method to do so, as well as the processes used to transfer and implement knowledge in clinical practice contexts, which facilitate decision-making. We aim to reflect on the methods that allow the synthesis, transfer and implementation of qualitative evidence for the improvement of practices and clinical decisions. Considering the great evolution in the number of qualitative studies, we will approach the elaboration of metasummaries and metasynthesis, as methodological approaches, to integrate, compare and synthesize the results of individual studies within a larger body of evidence, based on rigorous, reproducible methodologies and transparent, to determine what is known in a particular area or if there are evidence gaps that need to be investigated. Throughout the chapter, divided into six parts, the introductory conceptual question will be addressed, followed by the synthesis of qualitative evidence (metasynthesis and metasummaries) and the transfer and implementation of the qualitative synthesis, we present examples of practical cases, allowing then to proceed to the application of the proposal actually illustrated with practical cases. In the Final Considerations, we emphasize that the increase in Qualitative Evidence is a challenge for the development of systematic reviews of qualitative studies, to increase consistency, reliability, rigor and safety in the use of the findings that emerge from these studies for an evidence-based practice, which is only possible with the involvement of all actors (researchers, academics, professionals and citizens).

Abstract: The translation of knowledge into clinical practice and behavior change is a slow process that involves the involvement of all stakeholders in the process. Knowledge transfer (CT) is a complex process and encompasses more than the dissemination or communication of research results. Inherent in the pandemic context, our experience reveals some constraints on multidisciplinary and interinstitutional work, but the use of digital platforms can promote communication between academia and practice. Digital technologies pose several challenges to teachers, health professionals and researchers for an evidence-based practice (EBP) and allows us to infer that CT is influenced by the virtual world. We aim to reflect the role of teachers, researchers and clinicians in knowledge transfer in the virtual world, analyze challenges and debate strategies that ensure knowledge transfer. Throughout the chapter, divided into six sections, the introductory conceptual issue will be addressed, followed by a section with examples of practical cases already applied in various contexts, allowing for a reflection on the applicability of the tools for a more efficient EBP. The penultimate section lists the limitations and simultaneous challenges of the digital experience. Teaching EBP in school curricula at various levels of education and involving students in projects can be a challenge to the learning process of critical thinking in clinical practice and to the use of online models and techniques, due to the ease of use of technological resources by generations younger. In the Final Considerations, we emphasize the need for a collaborative approach between researchers, clinicians and clients where each takes an active role. The new technologies applied to health and the demands of consumers, force the change of practices and models of organization of services, as well as the need for institutional partnerships.

Resumo: A translação do conhecimento para a prática clínica e a mudança de comportamentos é um processo lento que implica o envolvimento de todos os intervenientes no processo. A Transferência do Conhecimento (TC)é um processo complexo e abarca mais do que a disseminação ou comunicação dos resultados de investigação. Inerentes ao contexto pandémico, a nossa experiência revela alguns condicionantes no trabalho multiprofissional e interinstitucional, mas o recurso a plataformas digitais podem promover a comunicação entre academia e prática. As tecnologias digitais colocam vários desafios aos docentes, profissionais de saúde e investigadores para uma Prática Baseada na Evidencia (PBE) e permite-nos inferir que a TC é influenciada pelo mundo virtual. Temos como objetivo refletir o papel de docente, investigadores e clínicos na transferência do conhecimento no mundo virtual, analisar desafios e debater estratégias que garantam a transferência do conhecimento. Ao longo do capítulo, dividido em seis secções, será abordada a questão conceptual introdutória, seguida de uma seção com exemplos de casos práticos já aplicados em vários contextos, permitindo em seguida partir para uma reflexão sobre a aplicabilidade das ferramentas para uma PBE mais eficiente. A penúltima secção elenca as limitações com desafios simultâneos da experiência digital. Ensinar o PBE nos currículos escolares nos vários níveis de ensino e envolver os estudantes em projetos podem constituir um desafio ao processo de aprendizagem do pensamento crítico da prática clínica e à utilização de modelos e técnicas online, pela facilidade da utilização de recursos tecnológicos pelas gerações mais jovens. Nas Considerações finais, salientamos a necessidade de uma abordagem colaborativa entre investigadores, clínicos e clientes onde cada um assume um papel ativo. As novas tecnologias aplicadas à saúde e as exigências dos consumidores, obrigam a alteração das práticas e dos modelos de organização serviços bem como, a necessidade de parcerias institucionais.

Resumo: Um dos principais problemas de saúde ocupacional dos enfermeiros são as lesões músculo-esqueléticas relacionadas com as condições de trabalho (LMELT), as atividades específicas dos Enfermeiros e fatores de risco individuais, psicossociais e organizacionais. Objetivos: Analisar a perceção dos estudantes de mestrado sobre o risco de lesões músculo esqueléticas ligadas ao trabalho na sua prática clínica. Métodos: Estudo qualitativo, descritivo e exploratório com recurso ao Photovoice como método de investigação de ação participativa suportado na compreensão das experiências dos estudantes. A análise de conteúdo seguiu as etapas definidas por Bardin e foi suportada pelo software WebQdA®; Resultados: Os participantes são 6 estudantes da Unidade Curricular Biomecânica no cuidar do Enfermeiro Especialista de Saúde Materna e Obstetrícia. Das 185 unidades de enumeração obtidas, 119 correspondem a fatores de risco físico, 38 a fatores psicossociais e organizacionais e 28 a fatores de risco individual. Sabem os princípios da biomecânica, mas identificam dificuldades na sua utilização face à emergência e natureza da atividade profissional. Conclusões: Salientamos o desadequado uso de espaços e equipamentos face às características individuais que contribuem para o risco dos profissionais no contexto de trabalho, agravadas pela situação de pandemia. Foi essencial a utilização do Photovoice como método de recolha de dados, por possibilitar aceder à perspetiva dos participantes sobre os seus fatores de risco de LMELT e promover um papel mais ativo na sua prevenção.

Abstract: One of the nurse’s main occupational health problems are the Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders (WRMD). There are specific risks related to the nursing activity, as well as individual, psychosocial and organizational risks. Objectives: To analyze the perception of master's students about the risk of musculoskeletal injuries related to work in their clinical practice. Methods: Qualitative, descriptive and exploratory study using Photovoice as a method of investigating participatory action based on the understanding of students' experiences. The content analysis followed the steps defined by Bardin and was supported by the WebQdA® software; Results: The participants are 6 students from the Biomechanical Curricular Unit in the care of the Specialist Nurse, Maternal Health and Obstetrics. Of the 185 enumeration units obtained, 119 correspond to physical risk factors, 38 to psychosocial and organizational factors and 28 to individual risk factors. They know the principles of biomechanics, but they identify difficulties in their use in view of the emergence and nature of professional activity. Conclusions. We emphasize the inappropriate use of spaces and equipment in view of the individual characteristics that contribute to the risk of professionals in the work context, aggravated by the pandemic situation. The use of Photovoice as a method of data collection was essential, as it made it possible to access the perspective of participants on their risk factors for WRMD and promote a more active role in its prevention.

Resumo: Introdução. As pessoas idosas residentes em Estruturas Residenciais para Pessoas Idosas (ERPI) são um dos grupos de maior vulnerabilidade na pandemia por COVID-19. As medidas de distanciamento social inerentes à prevenção da COVID-19 poderão influenciar o bem-estar das pessoas institucionalizadas. Objetivos. Identificar estudos que permitam compreender o bem-estar das pessoas idosas residentes em ERPI face ao cumprimento das medidas de prevenção e controlo de infeção para a COVID-19; Métodos. Revisão integrativa da literatura de acordo com a estratégia PCC (população, conceito e contexto) em que P corresponde às Pessoas idosas sujeitas a medidas de prevenção e controlo de infeção para a COVID-19, C ao Bem-estar e C às ERPI. Foram consultadas as bases de dados MEDLINE, CINAHL, Pubmed, SCOPUS e Web of Science. A colheita de dados decorreu em março de 2021. A pesquisa e seleção dos artigos foram orientadas pela Preferred Reporting Items for Transparent Reporting of Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses. A avaliação da qualidade seguiu a Joanna Briggs International. Resultados. Foram identificados seis artigos que avaliaram o bem-estar de pessoas idosas institucionalizadas durante a pandemia. Os resultados sugerem que as medidas de prevenção e controle de infeção implementadas em ERPI poderão ter efeitos no bem-estar percecionado pelas pessoas idosas residentes, pela perda de contacto humano e pela perda de espaço de circulação, com declínio cognitivo, perda de capacidade funcional, mal-estar emocional e solidão. Conclusões. As medidas de prevenção e controlo implementadas nas ERPI no contexto da pandemia por COVID-19 parecem ter influenciado negativamente o bem-estar das pessoas idosas residentes.

Abstract: Introduction. Aging people living in nursing homes are one of the most vulnerable groups in the COVID-19 pandemic. The measures for COVID-19 prevention may influence the well-being of institutionalized people. Goals. To identify studies that allow us to understand the well-being of aging people living in nursing homes given compliance with the infection prevention and control measures for COVID-19. Methods. Integrative literature review according to the PCC strategy (population, concept, and context) in which P corresponds to aging people under the infection prevention and control measures for COVID-19, C is Well-being and C is nursing homes. We consulted MEDLINE, CINAHL, Pubmed, SCOPUS, and Web of Science databases. Data collection took place in March 2021. Preferred Reporting Items for Transparent Reporting of Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis guided articles identification and selection. The quality assessment followed Joanna Briggs International's critical appraisal tool. Results. We identified six articles as assessed the well-being of institutionalized aging people during the pandemic. The results suggest that infection prevention and control measures implemented in nursing homes may affect the well-being perceived by aging residents. They experience loss of human contact and the loss of space for circulation, with cognitive decline, loss of functional capacity, emotional condition, and loneliness. Conclusions. The infection prevention and control measures implemented in nursing homes in the COVID-19 pandemic appear to influence negatively residents' well-being.

Resumo Os sistemas de informação em enfermagem, onde se integram os indicadores de qualidade, têm como foco a uniformização dos registos em saúde e a consequente visibilidade dos cuidados prestados. Apesar da reconhecida importância dos contributos dos sistemas de informação, a sua implementação tem-se pautado por vários desafios pelo que nos propomos assim a refletir sobre estes. Com o objetivo de identificar a evidência disponível na literatura sobre estes mesmos desafios, foi desenvolvida uma revisão narrativa da literatura com análise de artigos e relatórios pertinentes acerca desta questão. Está patente na literatura a importância dos sistemas de informação para a obtenção de indicadores de qualidade sensíveis aos cuidados de enfermagem, existindo efetivamente um impacto positivo na qualidade dos cuidados, permitindo a mensurabilidade da qualidade nas intervenções, bem como facilitando a comparabilidade intra e interinstitucional, em tempo real ou em análise retrospetiva. Os desafios encontrados e que urge resolver na prática clínica, relacionam-se com a dificuldade de os profissionais percecionarem o impacto dos registos informáticos, a visibilidade dos indicadores em enfermagem e o tempo que é alocado em contexto de prestação de cuidados para realizar estes registos.

Despite the acknowledged importance of the contributions of information systems, their implementation has been characterized by several challenges, so we propose to reflect on them. To identify the evidence available in the literature on these same challenges, a narrative review of the literature was developed, with the analysis of relevant articles and reports on this issue. It is clear in the literature the importance of information systems for obtaining quality indicators that are sensitive to nursing care, with a positive impact on the quality of care, allowing for measurable quality in interventions, as well as facilitating inter and intra-institutional comparability, in real-time or in a retrospective analysis. The challenges encountered and which urgently needs to be resolved in clinical practice are related to the difficulty for professionals to perceive the impact of computer records, the visibility of nursing indicators and the time that is allocated in the context of providing care to carry out these records.

RESUMEN El tamaño de las semillas es un rasgo agronómico importante, pudiendo utilizarse para diferentes habilidades. Mientras que las semillas pequeñas garantizan un mayor aprovechamiento de la pulpa, semillas más grandes facilitan la siembra, sin embargo, existen pocos trabajos sobre el control genético de este carácter en la sandía. El objetivo de este trabajo fue estudiar la herencia del tamaño de las semillas en poblaciones de sandía cruzando genotipos contrastantes, buscando proporcionar soporte técnico durante la selección del tamaño de la semilla en el desarrollo de nuevos genotipos de este fruto. Fue medida la longitud de la semilla de seis poblaciones P1, P2, F1, F2, RC1 y RC2 utilizando el procedimiento generaciones segregantes y no segregantes (GENES), por medio del cual fue posible concluir que la herencia del tamaño de semillas en las poblaciones estudiadas es controlada por dos genes con dominancia incompleta. Además, dependiendo de las poblaciones estudiadas la herencia del carácter en cuestión puede comportarse de manera diferente. La selección de individuos superiores dentro de las poblaciones puede ser realizada con base en el fenotipo, lo que posibilita la exploración de estos individuos dentro de los programas de mejoramiento para componer líneas o híbridos.

ABSTRACT Seed size is an important agronomic trait and is applicable to different abilities. Small seeds guarantee the greater use of the pulp, while larger seeds facilitate sowing. However, there is little work on the genetic control of this characteristic in watermelon. The objective of this work was to study the seed size inheritance in watermelon populations by crossing contrasting genotypes, seeking to gain information to provide technical support during the selection of seed size for the development of new watermelon genotypes. The seed lengths of six populations, P1, P2, F1, F2, BC1 and BC2, were measured using the GENES software segregating and nonsegregating generations procedure. This trait is controlled by two genes with incomplete dominance. In addition, depending on the populations studied, inheritance for the characteristic in question may behave differently. Nevertheless, the selection of superior individuals within populations can be performed based on this phenotype, which allows the exploitation of these individuals within breeding programs to develop lines or hybrids.

RESUMO O Fusarium solani f. sp. cucurbitae (Fsc) é um patógeno habitante de solo e a adoção de porta-enxertos resistente é um método efetivo de controle. Os híbridos de Cucurbita spp. constituem o principal porta-enxerto utilizado para melancia. O objetivo desse trabalho foi avaliar a virulência de Fsc raça 1 (Fsc1) em três cucurbitáceas e verificar a reação de genótipos de Cucurbita spp. ao fungo visando seu uso como porta-enxerto. Realizaram-se quatro experimentos. No experimento um, foi avaliado a virulência do Fsc1 em melão, melancia e Cucurbita spp. Nos experimentos dois e três foi analisada a severidade do patógeno em 19 cucúrbitas. E no experimento quatro avaliou a compatibilidade desses genótipos como porta-enxerto para melancia. Cucurbita spp. mostrou-se mais resistente ao Fusarium solani f. sp. cucurbitae raça 1 que o melão. Destacaram-se pela alta frequência de plantas resistentes ao Fsc1 os genótipos BGC622, BGC620, BGC567, BGC530, BGC186, BGC381, BGC692, BGC082, ES0061 e ES0062. Além disso, os genótipos avaliados poderão ser utilizados, como porta-enxerto de melancia, com exceção da linhagem ES530 que se mostrou incompatível com a cultivar BRS Opara, mas poderá ser utilizada em programas de melhoramento de abóbora, assim como os demais genótipos resistentes.

ABSTRACT Fusarium solani f. sp. cucurbitae (Fsc) is a soil pathogen and the adoption of resistant rootstocks is an effective method of control. Hybrids of Cucurbita spp. are the main rootstock used for watermelon. This study aimed to evaluate the virulence of Fsc race 1 (Fsc1) in three cucurbits and check the reaction of Cucurbita spp. genotypes to the fungus for its use as rootstock. Four experiments were performed. The virulence of Fsc1 in melon, watermelon and Cucurbita spp. was evaluated in experiment I. In experiment two and three the severity of the pathogen in 19 cucurbits was analyzed. And experiment four evaluated the compatibility of these genotypes as a rootstock for watermelon. Cucurbita spp. proved to be more resistant to Fusarium solani f. sp. cucurbitae race 1 than the melon. The high frequency of plants resistant to Fsc1 was found in the genotypes BGC622, BGC620, BGC567, BGC530, BGC186, BGC381, BGC692, BGC082, ES0061 and ES0062. In addition, the evaluated genotypes may be used as watermelon rootstocks, except for the ES530 strain, which was incompatible with the cultivar BRS Opara, but could be used in pumpkin breeding programs, as well as other resistant genotypes.

RESUMO Para o aumento da produtividade em hortaliças de interesse agronômico, tem sido realizado o estudo da heterose, devido à superioridade dos híbridos, em relação aos genótipos de polinização livre. Objetivou-se estimar a heterose relativa em híbridos de melancia para os principais caracteres de interesse agronômico, visando ao desenvolvimento de futuras cultivares. Foram utilizados os genótipos 'JNY', 'ORA', 'KOD', 'SOL', 'CHG', 'PEA' e todos os híbridos possíveis entre eles, totalizando 36 tratamentos. Empregou-se o delineamento de blocos casualizados, com três repetições e parcelas com cinco plantas. Os genitores 'ORA', 'SOL', 'CHG' e 'PEA' apresentaram-se promissores para o desenvolvimento de híbridos de maior massa, enquanto 'JNY' e 'KOD' proporcionaram combinações com menor massa de fruto e sementes pequenas, indicando o seu potencial para o desenvolvimento de cultivares do tipo "mini". Os híbridos 'CHG x ORA' e 'ORA x CHG' foram promissores para atender a demanda de mercado por frutos maiores, enquanto 'KOD x JNY' e 'JNY x KOD' podem ser destinados à comercialização de frutos menores.

ABSTRACT In order to increase the yield of vegetables of agronomic interest, heterosis has been studied in view of the superiority of hybrids, if compared to genotypes obtained by free pollination. This study aimed to estimate the relative heterosis in watermelon hybrids, regarding the most important agronomic traits, in order to develop future cultivars. The genotypes 'JNY', 'ORA', 'KOD', 'SOL', 'CHG', 'PEA' and all hybrids among them were used, totaling 36 treatments. A randomized block design, with three replications and five-plant plots, was used. The genotypes 'ORA', 'SOL', 'CHG' and 'PEA' were promising for the development of watermelon hybrids with higher weight, whereas 'JNY' and 'KOD' provided combinations with lower fruit weight and smaller seeds, indicating their potential for the development of cultivars of the 'ice box' type. The hybrids 'CHG x ORA' and 'ORA x CHG' were promising to meet the market demand for larger fruits, while 'KOD x JNY' and 'JNY x KOD' could be targeted to the market of smaller fruits.

Resumo Estudou-se a morfologia, microdureza e permeabilidade dentinária da furca de pré-molares superiores. Dez pré-molares tiveram a porção oclusal da coroa e os terços radiculares médio e apical removidos. Cortou-se longitudinalmente o remanescente e delimitou-se a furca. As hemi-secções foram distribuídas em dois grupos. Num (n=10), mediu-se a microdureza nas regiões vestibular, central e palatina, nas camadas externa, média e interna e nas porções vestibular e palatina adjacentes à furca. Utilizou-se dureza Knoop, carga de 10 g por 15 s. Os dados foram analisados pelo teste ANOVA e Tukey-Kramer (a=0.05). No outro grupo (n=10) utilizou-se microscopia confocal para estudo da morfologia da dentina. Outros 10 espécimes foram instrumentados com Protaper e NaOCl a 1% e imersos em sulfato de cobre a 10% para análise da permeabilidade. Após preparo histológico os espécimes foram analisados em fotomicroscópio. Não houve diferença significante (p>0,05) entre a microdureza das regiões vestibular (39,9±3,1), central (39,5±4,4) e palatina (39,7±5,0), nem entre essas regiões e as adjacentes vestibular (39,1±5,8) e palatina (39,7±5,8) (p>0,05). A camada interna (42,3±3,7) é mais dura que a externa (37,1±3,9) (p<0,05). Há uma tendência dos canalículos calcificarem no sentido da camada externa para a interna. A porcentagem de área corada foi de 12,45±2.0 e restrita à camada externa. As regiões vestibular, central e palatina da furca, bem como as adjacentes vestibular e palatina apresentaram microdureza semelhante entre si. A camada interna apresentou-se mais dura que a externa. Os canalículos dentinários eram sinuosos e se entrelaçaram em direção à camada média. A penetração de corantes se restringiu à camada externa.

Abstract The morphology, microhardness and dentin permeability of the furcation region of maxillary premolars were evaluated. Ten premolars were cut lengthwise and the furcation region was delimited. In one group (n=10) microhardness was measured in the buccal, central and palatal regions, in the outer middle and inner layers of the furcation, and in the buccal and palatal regions adjacent to the furcation. Knoop hardness was tested with 10 g load for 15 s. Data were analyzed statistically by ANOVA and Tukey-Kramer test (a=0.05). In the other group (n=10) confocal microscopy was used to study dentin morphology. Other 10 specimens were instrumented with ProTaper and immersed in 10% copper sulfate for analysis of permeability under light microscopy. About microhardness, there was no significant difference (p>0.05) among the buccal (39.9±3.1), central (39.5±4.4) and palatal (39.7±5.0) regions of the furcation, or between these regions and the adjacent buccal (39.1±5.8) and palatal (39.7±5.8) regions (p>0.05). The inner layer (42.3±3.7) had significantly higher microhardness (p<0.05) than the outer layer (37.1±3.9). There was a tendency of calcification of the dentinal tubules from the outer towards the inner layer. The percentage of stained area was 12.45±2.0%, restricted to the outer layer. The buccal, central and palatal regions of the furcation as well as the buccal and palatal adjacent regions had similar microhardness values. In conclusion, the inner dentin layer is harder than the outer dentin layer. The dentinal tubules are sinuous and intertwine towards the middle layer. Dye penetration is restricted to the outer layer.

Embora ainda coexistam no espaço urbano o modelo concêntrico e o disperso de urbanização, considera-se aqui que esse fenômeno reflete mais a cristalização e materialidade dos processos anteriores do que a perpetuação da mesma dinâmica urbana que os fizeram existir. A hipótese perseguida é a de que há um novo padrão de urbanização disperso e fragmentado que tem tornado o tecido urbano socialmente mais heterogêneo e que tal característica coloca novos desafios tanto para a esfera social quanto para a escala individual. Assim, apresenta-se o processo de expansão urbano da Região Metropolitana de Natal (RMN), a partir de uma abordagem espacial e demográfica, em direção ao eixo sul de desenvolvimento urbano. Nesse sentido, observar as transformações ocorridas ao longo da década de 2000 nos permite compreender a dimensão do fenômeno e do processo de dispersão urbana na região e ainda analisar o seu impacto. Os resultados permitem confirmar a ampliação dos espaços de vida associados a uma tendência para a dispersão urbana no sentido sul da RMN, indicando que tais processos também estão por ocorrer em regiões metropolitanas nordestinas.

Although the concentric and dispersed models of urbanization still coexist in urban space, we consider that this phenomenon reflects more the crystallization and materiality of the former processes than its perpetuation in urban dynamics nowadays. The hypothesis pursued is that of a new pattern of dispersed and fragmented urbanization that has made urban frames more socially heterogeneous, and that this characteristic poses new challenges to both the social sphere and the individual scale. Thus we present the process of urban expansion in the Metropolitan Region of Natal (MRN), from a spatial and demographic approach, towards the south axis of urban development. In this sense, observing the changes occurred throughout the 2000s, allows us to understand the dimension of this phenomenon and of the urban sprawl process in the study region, and further analyze their impact. The results confirm the expansion of life space associated with a trend to urban sprawl in the south axis of the MRN, therefore indicating that such processes can also occur in other metropolitan areas of northeastern Brazil.
