ABSTRACT Bacterial spot, caused by Xanthomonas spp., is one of the major bacterial diseases in pepper (Capsicum annuum L.). The infection results in reduced crop yield, particularly during periods of high rainfall and temperature, due to the low efficiency of chemical control with copper bactericides. This study evaluated the copper and zinc sulfate sensitivity of 59 pathogenic strains of Xanthomonas euvesicatoria isolated from pepper plants produced in various regions throughout Brazil. Both the respective sulfates and a mixture thereof was evaluated at 50, 100, 200 and 400 μg.mL-1. All the evaluated strains were found to be resistant to zinc sulfate (100 μg.mL-1) and 86.4% were resistant to copper sulfate (200 μg.mL-1). The mixture of copper (200 μg.mL-1) and zinc (200 μg.mL-1) sulfates inhibited the growth of all strains of X. euvesicatoria. To our knowledge this is the first study to report the resistance of X. euvesicatoria strains from pepper plants to copper and zinc sulfates in Brazil.

O objetivo do presente estudo foi investigar a influência da adubação com nitrogênio e com potássio na severidade da podridão negra e na produtividade de brócolis tipo inflorescência única. O delineamento utilizado foi em blocos casualizados, com 4 repetições, em esquema de parcelas subdivididas com fatorial nas subparcelas. Na parcela avaliou-se a influência da inoculação (plantas injuriadas com água destilada e inoculadas com Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris) e na subparcela avaliou-se o fatorial 4 x 4 correspondendo a doses de potássio (0, 275, 550 e 825 kg ha-1) e de nitrogênio (0, 150, 300 e 450 kg ha-1). O brócolis híbrido BRO68 foi inoculado utilizando o método de palito aos 64 dias após a semeadura. Foi verificado que maiores doses de potássio aplicadas reduziram a severidade da doença, porém a ausência ou o excesso de nitrogênio aumentaram a severidade da doença. Estimou-se que as maiores produções de inflorescência de brócolis foram obtidas nas doses de 541 a 751 kg ha-1 de K2O e 286 a 328 kg ha-1 de N. No entanto, ao se considerar uma adubação equilibrada para obter maior produtividade, tamanho de inflorescência e maior resistência à podridão negra as doses indicadas são de 283 kg ha-1 de N e 550 kg ha-1 de K2O.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of potassium and nitrogen on the severity of black rot and yield of head. The experiment was carried out in split plots with factorial subplots, in randomized blocks with four replications. In the plots we assessed the influence of inoculation (injured plants with distilled water and inoculated with Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris) and in the subplots we evaluated the 4 x 4 factorial, potassium doses (0, 275, 550 and 825 kg ha-1) and nitrogen (0, 150, 300 and 450 kg ha-1). The hybrid Broccoli BRO68 was inoculated using the toothpick method at 64 days after sowing. We observed that potassium in the plant reduced the disease, but nitrogen increased disease. We estimated that the highest levels of potassum in the plant reduced the severity of the disease but lack or excess of nitrogen increased disease severity. The highest production of broccoli inflorescence was obtained at doses from 541 to 751 kg ha-1 of K2O and 286 to 328 kg ha-1 of N. However, when considering a balanced fertilization to obtain higher yield and size of inflorescences and greater resistance to black rot, the ideal doses are 283 kg ha-1 of N and 550 kg ha-1 of K2O.

Foi avaliada a presença de Curtobacterium flaccumfaciens pv. flaccumfaciens em 37 amostras de sementes de feijoeiro, dos grupos preto e carioca, produzidas em municípios do Estado de Santa Catarina, nas safras 2004/2005 e 2005/2006. Para a detecção, as sementes foram maceradas e alíquotas de sua suspensão foram transferidas para o meio de cultura semi-seletivo MSCFF. A identidade dos isolados obtidos foi comprovada por meio da observação da morfologia celular, coloração diferencial de Gram, tolerância a NaCl a 7% e patogenicidade em cultivares de feijoeiro suscetíveis. Detectou-se a presença de Curtobacterium flaccumfaciens pv. flaccumfaciens em 23 amostras (62,2%), indicando a importância das sementes como fonte de inoculo inicial.

The presence of Curtobacterium flaccumfaciens pv. flaccumfaciens was evaluated in 37 common bean seed samples, of the black and carioca groups, produced in counties of Santa Catarina State, Brazil. The seeds were soaked and aliquots of the suspension formed were placed on the surface of the semi-selective medium MSCFF. Species identification was done by evaluation of the cell morphology, feature Gram test, feature tolerance to 7% of NaCl and pathogenicity tests. Curtobacterium flaccumfaciens pv. flaccumfaciens was detected in 23 samples (62.2 %), showing the importance of the seeds as source of inoculum.

O efeito da indução de resistência promovido por acibenzolar-S-methyl foi avaliado em três cultivares de feijoeiro (Phaseolus vulgaris), com diferentes níveis de resistência à murcha-de-Curtobacterium, em dois ensaios distintos, sob condições de casa de vegetação. O primeiro ensaio visou avaliar a ação do acibenzolar-S-methyl na indução de resistência à murcha-de-Curtobacterium e o segundo, objetivou avaliar a ação deste produto na atividade das enzimas peroxidase e polifenoloxidase e no nível de proteínas totais solúveis, em amostras de folhas e caule, sem inoculação do patógeno. Em ambos os ensaios o indutor foi pulverizado na dosagem de 100 µg i.a./ml, cinco dias após o transplante das plantas para vasos. O acibenzolar-S-methyl foi ineficiente, tanto para controlar a doença na cultivar suscetível (IAC Carioca), quanto para incrementar os níveis de resistência das cultivares resistentes (IAC Carioca Akytã e IAC Carioca Pyatã). A peroxidase apresentou maior atividade nas plantas pulverizadas com o indutor, tanto na folha, como no caule. A polifenoloxidase mostrou maior atividade apenas no caule das plantas pulverizadas. O nível de proteínas totais solúveis foi maior no caule das plantas pulverizadas do que nas não-pulverizadas, porém não diferiu na folha. As enzimas e proteínas avaliadas apresentaram maiores níveis na folha do que no caule das plantas de feijoeiro avaliadas.

The effect in the induction of resistance by acibenzolar-S-methyl was evaluated in three common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) cultivars, with different levels of resistance to bacterial wilt under greenhouse conditions. The first assay evaluated the acibenzolar-S-methyl action in the induction of resistance against bacterial wilt; the second evaluated the action in the peroxidase and polyphenoloxidase activities as well as in total soluble protein level, in leaf and stem, without pathogen inoculation. In both assays, the inducer was sprayed at a dosage of 100 µg i.a./ml, five days after transplanting to pots. Acibenzolar-S-methyl was inefficient in controlling the disease in susceptible cultivar (IAC Carioca), nor did it improve the resistance level in resistant cultivars (IAC Carioca Akytã and IAC Carioca Pyatã). Peroxidase showed higher activity in inducer sprayed plants either in leaves or stems. In the sprayed plants, polyphenoloxidase showed higher activity only in stems. The total soluble protein level was higher in the stems of sprayed plants than in those that wern't sprayed, but levels did not differ in the leaves. The enzymes and proteins evaluated showed higher activity and levels in the leaves than in the stems.
