ABSTRACT The low germination values found in the literature for Butia eriospatha may reflect the physiology of the specie's seeds, which, in addition to having dormancy, may have a recalcitrant behavior in relation to drying and storage. Therefore, the objective of this work was to classify the seeds as to desiccation tolerance, using fast and slow drying methods, and to define the critical and lethal water contents. Seeds were collected in Lages/SC, processed and immediately tested for viability (tetrazolium test) and water content determined. The seeds were submitted to the protocol proposed by Hong and Ellis (1996), with adaptations in relation to the drying methods. Drying by fast (oven and silica gel) and slow (Magnesium Chloride) methods were used. The critical and lethal moistures were also defined by means of slow drying (Magnesium Chloride) at levels of 18%, 16%, 14%, 12% and 10%. RESUMO Os baixos valores de germinação encontrados na literatura para Butia eriospatha podem ser reflexo da fisiologia das sementes da espécie, que além de apresentarem dormência podem ter comportamento recalcitrante em relação à secagem e ao armazenamento. Diante disso, objetivou-se com o trabalho classificar as sementes da espécie quanto à tolerância à dessecação, utilizando métodos de secagem rápida e lenta, e definir os teores de água crítico e letal. As sementes foram coletadas em Lages/SC, beneficiadas e imediatamente foi realizado teste de viabilidade (teste de tetrazólio) e determinado o teor de água. As sementes foram submetidas ao protocolo proposto por Hong e Ellis (1996), com adaptações em relação aos métodos de secagem. RESUMO A algaroba (Prosopis juliflora (Sw) D.C.) é uma espécie exótica cujas folhas têm grande potencial para utilização na alimentação humana e animal, sendo altamente nutritivas, além de ser considerada eficiente na recuperação de áreas degradadas e solos empobrecidos. Apesar da procura crescente por sementes e mudas desta espécie, pouco se conhece sobre a qualidade fisiológica de suas sementes. Diante disto, o objetivo deste trabalho foi caracterizar a biometria de frutos e sementes da espécie, além de determinar as temperaturas e substratos para a germinação e desenvolvimento inicial de plântulas. Foi determinada a quantidade de sementes por quilograma e o teor de água das sementes. Analisou-se o comprimento, o diâmetro, o peso, e o número de sementes em cada fruto e a espessura, a largura, o comprimento e o peso das sementes. No teste de germinação foram utilizadas três temperaturas (20, 30 e 20-30°C) sob o regime de 14 horas de luz branca e dois substratos (sobre papel e rolo de papel). Determinaram-se as curvas de embebição das sementes, a germinação, o índice de velocidade de germinação, o comprimento da parte aérea, o comprimento da raiz e a massa seca das plântulas. Os dados biométricos indicam ampla variabilidade para as características avaliadas para frutos, entretanto, as sementes apresentam menor variabilidade. As temperaturas de 30 e 20-30°C e ambos os substratos testados são eficientes para a condução do teste de germinação de sementes de algaroba em laboratório.

ABSTRACT The algaroba (Prosopis juliflora (Sw) D.C.) is an exotic species whose leaves have great potential for use in human and animal feeding, being highly nutritious, besides being considered efficient in the recovery of degraded areas and impoverished soils. Despite the growing demand for seeds and seedlings of this species, little is known about the physiological quality of their seeds. Therefore, the objective of this work was to characterize the fruit and seed biometry of the species, as well as to determine the temperatures and substrates for the germination and early development of seedlings. The number of seeds per kilogram and the water content of the seeds were determined. The length, diameter, weight, and number of seeds in each fruit and the thickness, width, length and weight of the seeds were analyzed. In the germination test, three temperatures (20, 30 and 20-30°C) were used under the regime of 14 hours of white light and two substrates (on paper and paper roll). Seed embedding curves, germination, germination speed index, shoot length, root length and seedling dry mass were determined. The biometric data indicate wide variability for the characteristics evaluated for fruits, however, the seeds present less variability. Temperatures of 30 and 20-30 °C and both substrates tested are efficient for conducting the germination test of algaroba seeds in the laboratory.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of Azospirillum brasilense , Bacillus subtilis and Pseudomonas fluorescens on the growth of Pinus taeda seedlings. Bacterial inoculants were applied in two different forms: at sowing and 20 days after emergence. At 30, 60 and 90 days after emergence, we evaluated plant height and root-colar diameter. At 180 days after emergence, we also measured shoot and root dry weight. Data were analyzed by analysis of variance and means were ranked by Duncan’s test. The most pronounced results were observed for root and shoot biomass when plants were inoculated with Bacillus subtilis and Pseudomonas fluorescens. Bacillus subtilis increased root and shoot biomass by 67.1% and 33.1%, respectively, when comparing values with those of non-inoculated plants. On the other hand, inoculation with Pseudomonas fluorescens decreased root biomass up to 31.42%. Inoculation with Azospirillum brasilense did not promote any difference in Pinus taeda seedling growth and may not be an efficient alternative for inoculation practices. According to these results, inoculation of Pinus taeda seedlings with Bacillus subtilis has great potential to improve plant growth regarding adaptation to field conditions.

RESUMO Durante a germinação, uma série de eventos sequenciais ocorre nas sementes em resposta a fatores endógenos e/ou exógenos às mesmas. O objetivo deste trabalho foi investigar as alterações fisiológicas decorrentes da hidratação controlada em água e da temperatura (fatores exógenos) em sementes de Dalbergia nigra (jacarandá-da-bahia). Para tanto, dois lotes de sementes, um de alto e um de baixo vigor foram utilizados nos ensaios. As sementes pertencentes aos dois lotes, após desinfestadas com Captan 0,5%, foram então hidratadas em água, pelo método da atmosfera úmida (umidade relativa de 95-99%), até atingirem quatro níveis de hidratação: 10, 15, 20 ou 25% de teor de água nas sementes, nas temperaturas de 15 e 25ºC. Após os tratamentos foram analisadas as seguintes variáveis: curva de embebição, percentagem de germinação, índice de velocidade (IVG) e condutividade elétrica. Os resultados mostraram que não houve diferença significativa na resposta fisiológica das sementes entre as temperaturas. Por outro lado, para a hidratação verificou-se que até 15% do teor de água aumentou a qualidade fisiológica das sementes de ambos os lotes, que apresentaram maiores valores de germinação, IVG e menores quantidades de compostos lixiviados. A partir de 15% de teor de água verificou-se redução na qualidade das sementes classificadas como de alto vigor, enquanto aquelas de baixo vigor continuaram apresentando respostas positivas em 20 e 25% de teor de água. Diante disto, conclui-se que a técnica de hidratação controlada em água favorece a germinação de sementes de Dalbergia nigra, independentemente do vigor das mesmas. A hidratação no teor de água de 15% é a mais indicada para incrementar a qualidade das sementes. A hidratação nos valores abaixo ou acima resultaram em redução no estímulo.

ABSTRACT During germination, a series of sequential events occur in seeds in response to endogenous and / or exogenous factors. The objective of this study was to investigate the physiological changes resulting from the controlled hydration in water and temperature in seeds of jacaranda-da-bahia (Dalbergia nigra). To this end, two lots of seeds separated as high and low vigor were used in the tests. Seeds belonging to the two lots, after desinfect, were hydrated in water, with the method of humid atmosphere (relative humidity 95-99%) to reach four hydration levels: 10, 15, 20 and 25% moisture content in seeds, in temperatures (exogenous factor) of 15 and 25 ° C. After hydration and temperature treatments, were analyzed the following variables: curve soaking, germination percentage, germination speed index (GSI) and electrical conductivity. The results showed no significant difference in seeds physiological response between the temperatures. On the other hand, for hydration was found that up to 15% moisture content increased the seeds physiological quality of both lots, which showed higher germination values, IVG and smaller amounts of leached compounds. From 15% moisture content were found a reduction in the quality of seeds classified as high vigor, while those of low vigor continued to show positive responses in 20 and 25% humidity. Given this, it is concluded that the technique of controlled hydration in water favors the germination of Dalbergia nigra seeds, independent of the vigor. Hydration moisture content of 15% is more appropriate to increase the seeds quality. The hydration in values below or above resulted in a decrease in the stimulus.

RESUMO: Para que ocorra a germinação das sementes, enzimas hidrolíticas distintas atuam em conjunto, permitindo a protrusão da raiz primária. O objetivo neste trabalho foi investigar as alterações nas atividades das enzimas α-amilase, β-amilase e glicose-6-fosfato-desidrogenase durante a germinação das sementes de Melanoxylon brauna Schott, submetidas ao estresse térmico. Para tanto, sementes da espécie foram submetidas ao teste de germinação em temperaturas constantes de 10, 25, 30 e 40°C, sendo retiradas amostras de sementes a cada 24 horas, durante o período de 96 horas, nas quais foi avaliada a atividade das enzimas. Nas temperaturas 25 e 30ºC, consideradas ótimas para a germinação da espécie, as atividades das enzimas α-amilase, β-amilase e glicose-6-fosfato-desidrogenase aumentam com a embebição das sementes, enquanto, nas temperaturas 10 e 40°C, as atividades das enzimas são reduzidas, prejudicando o desenvolvimento adequado do processo germinativo.

The objective of this study was to investigate changes in the activities of α-amylase, β-amylase, and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PdH) during germination of Melanoxylon brauna Schott. seeds under thermal stress. To this end, seeds of this species were germinated under constant temperature (10, 25, 30 or 40°C) and samples were collected every 24h during a 96-h period, in which the activity of the enzymes were evaluated. At 25 and 30°C, optimal temperatures for the germination of the species, the activities of α-amylase, β-amylase, and G6PdH increased with seed imbibitions. At 10 and 40°C, enzyme activities decreased, impairing the germination process.

Resumo: Óxido nítrico (NO) é um composto que participa de inúmeros processos fisiológicos vegetais. O objetivo deste estudo foi investigar a eficiência de nitroprussiato de sódio (SNP), um doador de NO, na resposta fisiológica e bioquímica de sementes deDalbergia nigra (jacarandá-da-Bahia) sob armazenamento em diferentes condições ambientais. Sementes recém coletadas foram armazenadas em câmara fria (5 °C e 60% de umidade relativa, UR) ou em dois dessecadores a 20 °C: 55 e 93% UR por quatro meses. A cada 30 dias de armazenamento, foram embebidas em água ou em solução SNP 10-4 M por 48 horas. Foram avaliadas a porcentagem de germinação, a condutividade elétrica, a peroxidação lipídica e a atividade da enzima catalase. Sementes de jacarandá-da-Bahia armazenadas em câmara fria e a 20 ºC e 55% UR mantiveram sua qualidade fisiológica, e quando embebidas em SNP foi observada redução na permeabilidade da membrana, diminuindo a peroxidação lipídica e aumentando a atividade da catalase. Sementes mantidas sob 93% UR deterioraram rapidamente, e SNP não foi eficiente em reverter a degradação. Concluiu-se que o óxido nítrico manteve a qualidade das sementes armazenadas em câmara fria e a 20 ºC e 55% UR, mantendo a integridade da membrana e estimulando a catalase.

Abstract: Nitric oxide (NO) is a compound that participates in vegetable physiologic processes. The purpose of this study was to investigate the efficiency of sodium nitroprusside (SNP), a NO donor, on the physiologic and biochemical responses of Dalbergia nigra (bahia rosewood) seeds under storage in different environmental conditions. Seeds recently collected were stored in cold chamber (5 ºC and 60% relative humidity, RH) or in two desiccators at 20 ºC: 55 and 93% RH for four months. Every month of storage seed samples were taken and imbibed in SNP solution at 10-4M concentration for 48 hours or in water. The germination percentage, electric conductivity, lipid peroxidation and catalase enzyme activity were evaluated. Seeds of bahia rosewood stored in cold chamber at 55% RH maintained physiologic quality, while seeds imbibed in SNP reduced the membrane permeability, decreasing lipid peroxidation and increasing catalase activity. Seeds kept under 93% RH deteriorated quickly, and SNP was not efficient in revert the seed degradation. It was concluded that nitric oxide maintain the quality of seeds stored in cold chamber and at 20 ºC and 55% RH, by maintaining membrane integrity and stimulating catalase activity.

A temperatura e a umidade relativa estabelecem as condições fundamentais na conservação de sementes, quer sejam recalcitrantes, quer sejam ortodoxas. A conservação de sementes de braúna sob umidades relativas de 55, 75 e 93% e temperatura de 20ºC foi realizada com os objetivos de avaliar as respostas da germinação e do vigor, relacionando-as à permeabilidade da membrana, atividade de enzimas, teor e peroxidação de lipídios. A qualidade das sementes decresce com o aumento do teor de água do ambiente, com decréscimo também das atividades das enzimas superóxido dismutase e catalase e aumento da atividade da enzima glicose-6-fosfato desidrogenase. A permeabilidade das membranas é ampliada com o aumento da deterioração das sementes. Não há relação entre as alterações no teor e peroxidação de lipídios e a deterioração das sementes.

Temperature and relative humidity set the basic conditions for the preservation of recalcitrant and orthodox seeds. The seed conservation of braúna under relative humidities of 55, 75 and 93% at 20°C was performed with the aim of evaluating germination and vigor responses, relating them to the membrane permeability, enzyme activity, content and lipid peroxidation. Increasing environment water content decreases seed quality and also decreases the activity of the enzymes superoxide dismutase and catalase, and increases activity of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase. The membrane permeability increases with increasing deterioration of the seeds. There is no relationship between the changes in lipids content and peroxidation and seed deterioration.

Os objetivos deste trabalho foram investigar o efeito da temperatura sobre a germinação de sementes de Melanoxylon brauna e identificar as temperaturas cardinais de germinação, bem como avaliar a eficiência do teste de condutividade elétrica para determinação das temperaturas cardinais. Para tanto, foram realizados três ensaios. No primeiro, foi feita a determinação das curvas de embebição, em cada temperatura (5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40 e 45 ºC); as sementes foram pesadas a cada 2 h, por um período de 12 h e após a cada 12 h até a protrusão radicular de 50% das sementes, ou até 120 h quando na ausência de germinação. No segundo ensaio, para identificar as temperaturas cardinais, as sementes foram mantidas sob cada temperatura, por 10 dias, em câmara tipo BOD, sob luz constante. No terceiro ensaio, foi realizado um teste de condutividade elétrica com as sementes incubadas por períodos de 24, 48 e 72 h de embebição em cada uma das temperaturas e, em seguida, colocadas em erlenmeyers com 75 mL de água deionizada a 25 ºC, por 24 h, para posterior leitura da condutividade elétrica. É mais criterioso recomendar faixas de temperaturas para germinação do que temperaturas pontuais. As temperaturas cardinais (teóricas) para a característica porcentagem de germinação são: 12,3 ºC - mínima, 30,0 ºC - ótima (teórica) e 42,7 ºC - máxima. As faixas de temperatura considerando todas as variáveis investigadas são: 12,1-12,6 ºC (mínima); 30,0-35,8 ºC (ótima); e 42,4-43,0 ºC (máxima). A espécie apresenta grande amplitude de germinação com relação à temperatura, sendo verificada a germinação na faixa de 12,0 a 42,0 ºC. O teste de condutividade elétrica foi eficiente para avaliar o efeito da temperatura sobre as sementes e, nesse teste, a temperatura ótima é de 27,0 ºC..

The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of temperature on the germination of Melanoxylonbrauna seeds and identify cardinal temperatures for germination, as well as to evaluate the efficiency of the electrical conductivity test to determine the cardinal temperatures. Therefore, three testswere performed. In the first test, the determination of imbibition curves was performed at each temperature (5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40 and 45ºC), the seeds were weighed every two hours for a period of 12 hours and after every 12 hours until the root protrusion of 50% of the seeds, or 120 hours when there was no germination. In the second test, to identify the cardinal temperatures, seeds were kept under each temperature for a period of 10 days in DBO under constant light. In the third test, an electrical conductivity test was performed with the seeds incubated for 24, 48 and 72 hours of imbibition in each of the temperatures, and then were placed inerlenmeyer flasks with 75 mL of deionized water at 25ºC for 24 hours for subsequent reading of the electrical conductivity. It is more judicious to recommend temperature ranges for germination than punctual temperatures. The cardinal temperatures (theoretical) for the characteristic germination rates are: 12.3ºC - minimum - 30.0ºC optimal (theoretical) and 42.7ºC maximun. The temperature ranges considering all the variables investigated were: 12.1 to 12.6ºC (minimum); 30.0-35.8ºC (optimum) and 42.4-43.0ºC (maximum). The specie has a wide range of germination with respect to temperature, and germination was observed in the temperature range from 12.0 to 42.0ºC. The electrical conductivity test was efficient to evaluate the effect of temperature onseeds and according to this test the optimal temperature is 27.0ºC.

Objetivou-se, com este trabalho, investigar o efeito da temperatura sobre o metabolismo oxidativo, por meio da atividade das enzimas superóxido dismutase (SOD), ascorbato peroxidase (APX) e catalase (CAT) no eixo embrionário e no endosperma micropilar de sementes de Melanoxylon brauna Schott, durante a germinação. As sementes foram semeadas em rolos de papel germitest umedecidos com água destilada e submetidas às temperaturas constantes de 15, 25, 30 e 40ºC, durante 10 dias. As determinações das atividades das enzimas SOD, APX e CAT foram feitas nas sementes colocadas para germinar sob as mesmas condições descritas acima e a cada 12 horas foram retiradas amostras até a protrusão radicular de 50% das sementes ou 168 horas para a temperatura de 15ºC. Não foram detectadas atividades das enzimas SOD, APX e CAT no endosperma micropilar nas diferentes temperaturas. No eixo embrionário, as atividades das enzimas SOD e CAT apresentaram maiores alterações ao longo da germinação em 15ºC e 40ºC, demonstrando que temperaturas estressantes provocam danos oxidativos. A atividade da enzima APX, no eixo embrionário, não foi afetada pela temperatura ao longo da germinação e sua atividade foi extremamente baixa.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of temperature on the oxidative metabolism through the activity of the enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD), ascorbate peroxidase (APX) and catalase (CAT) in the embryonic axis and micropylar endosperm of Melanoxylon brauna Schott seeds during germination. The seeds were sown in paper rolls germitest moistened with distilled water and subjected to constant temperatures of 15, 25, 30 and 40ºC for 10 days. Measurements of the activities of enzymes SOD, APX and CAT were made in the seeds germinated under the same conditions described above, and every 12 hours until the samples were taken root protrusion of 50% of the seeds or 168 hours for the temperature 15ºC. There were no activities of the enzymes SOD, APX and CAT in the micropylar endosperm at different temperatures. In the embryonic axis, the activities of the enzymes SOD and CAT showed greater changes over the germination of 15ºC and 40ºC, demonstrating that temperature stress causes oxidative damage. The APX enzyme activity in the embryonic axis was not affected by temperature during germination and its activity was extremely low.

A embebição das sementes é o passo inicial do processo de germinação, que se caracteriza pela hidratação de tecidos e células, ativando e/ou induzindo a síntese de enzimas responsáveis pela mobilização das reservas, para atender as necessidades de respiração e a construção de novas estruturas celulares. Portanto, o objetivo deste trabalho foi investigar as alterações nas substâncias de reservas durante a hidratação lenta em água de sementes de jacarandá-da-bahia (Dalbergia nigra). Sementes pertencentes a dois lots distintos (lots I e II) foram colocadas para hidratar em dessecadores saturados (95-99% UR) nas temperaturas de 15 e 25 °C até atingirem os teores de água de 10, 15, 20 e 25% de umidade. Em cada nível de hidratação foram avaliadas as variações nas reservas de lipídios, carboidratos solúveis, amido e proteínas solúveis. A mobilização de reservas ocorreu de maneira similar nos dois lotes avaliados, porém não foram observadas diferenças entre as duas temperaturas de hidratação. Os teores de lipídios apresentaram pequena variação durante a hidratação, enquanto os conteúdos de carboidratos solúveis e amido apresentaram decréscimo a partir do nível de hidratação de 15%. Proteínas solúveis exibiram tendência gradativa de queda, desde a testemunha (sementes secas) até o nível de 25% de umidade.

Seed imbibitions is the first stage of the germination process and is characterized by the hydration of tissues and cells and the activation and/or induction of the enzymes responsible for mobilizing reserves for respiration and the construction of new cell structures. The objective of this study was to investigate the alterations in reserve substances during slow hydration of Bahia Rosewood (Dalbergia nigra) seeds in water. Seeds from two different lots (Lot I and II) were placed in saturated desiccators (95-99% RH) to hydrate at 15 and 25 °C until water contents of 10, 15, 20 and 25% were reached. At each level of hydration, changes in lipid reserves, soluble carbohydrates, starch and soluble proteins were evaluated. The mobilization of reserves was similarly assessed in both lots, with no differences being observed between the two hydration temperatures. Lipid contents showed little variation during hydration, while the contents of soluble carbohydrates and starch decreased after the 15% water content level. Soluble proteins showed a gradual tendency to decrease between the control (dry seeds) up to 25% water content.

A germinação é um processo que se inicia com a absorção de água pelas sementes, estimulando a síntese de enzimas ou ativação daquelas pré-existentes. O objetivo deste trabalho foi estudar as variações nas reservas de monossacarídeos e atividades das enzimas α-galactosidase e poligalacturonase durante a hidratação de sementes de dois lotes de Dalbergia nigra (jacarandá-da-Bahia). Para tanto, sementes de duas procedências constituíram os lotes I e II, classificados como de alto e baixo vigor, respectivamente. Os lotes foram colocados para hidratar em dessecadores com alta umidade relativa nas temperaturas de 15 e 25 °C até atingirem os níveis de hidratação de 10, 15, 20 e 25% de umidade nas sementes. Os teores de monossacarídeos e as atividades das enzimas foram analisados nos cotilédones das sementes. Os teores de ramnose e xilose apresentaram valores superiores na testemunha, com redução durante a hidratação até 15%, momento a partir do qual aumentaram novamente, em ambos os lotes. O lote I, de qualidade superior, possui maior síntese e degradação de glicose durante a hidratação das sementes. Ambas as enzimas mostraram ser pré-formadas, por já apresentarem atividade nas sementes sem embebição. A poligalacturonase aumentou e a α-galactosidase manteve-se relativamente constante durante a hidratação das sementes.

Germination is a process that begins with seed water uptake, stimulating enzyme synthesis or activating enzymes already present. The objective of this study was to evaluate variations in monosaccharide reserves and the activities of the α-galactosidase and polygalacturonase enzymes during the hydration of two lots of Dalbergia nigra (Bahia Rosewood) seeds. Seeds from different origins constituted the two lots I and II, classified as high and low vigor, respectively. Both lots were placed in desiccators with a high relative humidity to hydrate and at 15 and 25 °C until levels of 10, 15, 20 and 25% moisture levels in seeds were reached. The seed cotyledons were analyzed for the quantity of monosaccharides and enzyme activity. The control had higher concentrations of xylose and rhamnose, which decreased during hydration until the 15% level was reached, after which concentrations increased again in both lots. Lot I, with a superior quality, showed higher glucose synthesis and degradation during seed hydration. Both enzymes were pre-existing since activity was already present in the seeds without imbibition. The polygalacturonase enzyme increased and the α-galactosidase enzyme remained relatively constant during seed hydration.

O presente trabalho teve como objetivo investigar e estabelecer relações entre a deterioração, alterações fisiológicas e atividade da enzima catalase, durante o envelhecimento artificial de sementes de Pterogyne nitens. Para tanto, sementes de P. nitens sem e com superação da dormência, por meio da aplicação de ácido sulfúrico concentrado (95-99%), durante 10 minutos, foram submetidas ao teste de envelhecimento acelerado, por 0, 24, 48 e 72 horas, determinando-se a percentagem de germinação, peroxidação de lipídios e atividade da enzima catalase. O envelhecimento artificial afetou significativamente a viabilidade e vigor das sementes, após prévia superação da dormência, observando-se decréscimo na germinação e na atividade da enzima catalase e aumento na peroxidação de lipídios, durante o envelhecimento. Nas sementes que não tiveram a dormência superada, não foi observada relação entre o envelhecimento artificial, alterações fisiológicas e atividade da enzima, de forma que a dormência atua como um mecanismo protetor do estresse oxidativo nas sementes.

The accelerated aging test is usually used to evaluate seeds vigor and quality. This study aimed to investigate and establish relations among deterioration, physiological changes, and catalase enzyme activity, during the artificial aging process of Pterogyne nitens seeds. So, P. nitens seeds with and without dormancy overcoming, with the application of concentrated sulfuric acid (95-99%), for 10 minutes, were exposed to the accelerated aging test, for 0, 24, 48, and 72 hours, determining the germination percentage, lipids peroxidation, and catalase enzyme activity. The artificial aging process significantly affected the viability and vigor seeds, after a previous dormancy overcoming, with a decrease in germination and catalase enzyme activity and an increase in lipids peroxidation, during the aging process. For seeds that did not overcome dormancy, no relation among artificial aging, physiological changes, and enzyme activity was observed, so that dormancy acts as a protective mechanism for seeds oxidative stress.
