‘Elbita’ arises from the need to have tomato varieties adapted to the Cuban tropical climate for open field planting. It is a variety resistant to TYLCV-IL [CU], begomovirus of greater incidence in the country and tolerant to fungal diseases, such as Alternariosis. The present work was developed to evaluate the in order to characterize morphoagronomically the phenotypic variability in 16 tomato cultivars, including 15 cultivars are resistant to begomovirus from Taiwan and the analysis of these cultivars to the circulating virus isolated in Cuba. For this, 20 morphoagronomic characters related to the plant were evaluated, the fruit and the phonological stages. In addition, begomovirus resistance was evaluated by the severity of the disease caused by infection of TYLCV-IL under uncontrolled conditions. For the morphoagronomic viewpoint, a phenotypical variability regarding morphoagronomic characteristic was detected, grouping the cultivars into four main groups. Except for the susceptible control, all the evaluated cultivars were asymptomatic to the virus, confirming the prospects for their use in plant breeding programs for obtaining new hybrids and cultivars resistant to begomovirus

El presente trabajo se realizó con el objetivo de caracterizar morfoagronómicamente la variabilidad fenotípica existente en 16 cultivares de tomate, de ellos 15 son cultivares con resistencia a begomovirus procedentes de Taiwán y el análisis del comportamiento de estos cultivares ante el aislado viral circulante en Cuba. Para ello se evaluaron 20 caracteres morfoagronómicos relacionados con la planta, el fruto y las fases fenológicas del cultivo. Se estudió asimismo, la resistencia a begomovirus, mediante la evaluación de la severidad de la enfermedad provocada por la infección de TYLCV-IL en condiciones no controladas. Se pudo detectar la existencia de variabilidad genética dentro de la colección en cuanto a características morfoagronómicas, lo que permitió agrupar a los cultivares en cuatro grupos fundamentales. A excepción del control susceptible, los cultivares evaluados fueron asintomáticos ante el virus, lo que confirma las perspectivas de su utilización en los programas de mejoramiento del cultivo para la obtención de híbridos y nuevos cultivares resistentes a begomovirus

The present work was carried out with the aim of evaluating drought stress tolerance in 28 germplasm accessions of tomato (Solanum L. section Lycopersicon subsection Lycopersicon) ex situ preserved in Cuban collections as well as identifying the most tolerant accessions to be used in plant breeding programs. Thus, crop fruiting percentage was evaluated at the optimal period and under drought conditions (stressful period), which was used to calculate stress criteria: stress susceptibility index (SSI), geometric mean productivity (GMP), mean productivity (MP), stress tolerance index (STI), fruiting index (FI), harmonic mean (HARM), fruiting stability index (FSI), drought tolerance index (DI), stress susceptibility percentage index (SSPI), relative drought index (RDI), sensitivity drought index (SDI), modified stress tolerance indices (MSTI) and abiotic tolerance index (ATI). Accessions were classified according to their drought stress tolerance at plant level based on fruiting percentage, whereas the relationship among tolerance indices was evaluated by Biplot analysis. At the evaluated germplasm, there were accessions with high tolerance indices and fruiting percentages under stressful and non-stressful environments. This indicates that ex situ preserved germplasm in Cuba has tolerant accessions which can be used in breeding programs, in order to obtain adequately-performing cultivars or hybrids under these conditions

El presente trabajo se desarrolló con el objetivo de evaluar la tolerancia al estrés por déficit hídrico en una muestra de 28 accesiones del germoplasma de tomate (Solanum L. sección Lycopersicon subsección Lycopersicon) conservado ex situ en las colecciones cubanas e identificar las accesiones más tolerantes para su empleo en los programas de mejoramiento genético. Para ello, se evaluó el porcentaje de fructificación en el período óptimo y en condiciones de déficit hídrico (período estresante) del cultivo, que se utilizó para el cálculo de los criterios de estrés: índice de susceptibilidad al estrés (SSI) según sus siglas en inglés, productividad geométrica media (GMP), productividad media (MP), índice de tolerancia al estrés (STI), índice de fructificación (FI), media armónica (HARM), índice de estabilidad de la fructificación (FSI), índice de tolerancia a la sequía (DI), índice de porcentaje de susceptibilidad al estrés (SSPI), índice relativo de sequía (RDI), índice de sensibilidad a la sequía (SDI), índices modificados de tolerancia al estrés (MSTI) e índice de tolerancia abiótica (ATI). Se clasificaron las accesiones por su tolerancia al estrés por déficit hídrico a nivel de planta en base al porcentaje de fructificación, mientras que la relación entre los índices de tolerancia se evaluó mediante análisis Biplot. Se pudo comprobar que, en el germoplasma evaluado, existieron accesiones con índices de tolerancia y porcentajes de fructificación altos en ambientes estresantes y no estresantes, lo cual indica que en el germoplasma que se conserva ex situ en Cuba existen accesiones tolerantes que pueden ser explotadas en los programas de mejoramiento genético, para obtener cultivares o híbridos con buen comportamiento en estas condiciones

The ‘Tomato yellow leaf curl disease’, caused by Tomato Yellow Leaf Curl Virus (TYLCV-IL [CU]) has caused extensive damage to tomato crops in Cuba. There are several resistance genes that have been introgresed to tomato from wild Solanum species. The objective of this study was to assess the segregation of two such genes, Ty-1 and Ty-2, as the basis for selection in improving resistance to TYLCV-IL [CU]. Two F2 populations, susceptible cultivar ‘Amalia’ x resistant cultivar ‘H-24’ (Ty-2), TY-2F2 and ‘Amalia’ x resistant cultivar ‘LA3473’ (Ty-1), TY-1F2, were obtained. Plants F2 and plants of susceptible controls, cvs. ‘Amalia’ and ‘STY-1’. The plants, 25 days after sowing, were inoculated with viruliferous (Cuban isolate TYLCV-IL [CU]) whiteflies (Bemisia tabaci, biotype B) for 48 hours before transplantation to the field. The disease severity index (DSI, 0-4 scale) and viral DNA (dot blot hybridization) were evaluated 30 days after the inoculation. The plant frequency distribution of disease severity and viral DNA concentration changed according to TY-2F2 and TY-1F2 plants. Therefore, we should select as resistant plants to TYLCV those with 1 score in TY-1F2 and 0 scored in TY-2F2, when the improvement program is performed by selecting phenotypic resistance TYLCV-IL [CU] conferred by Ty-1 and Ty-2 resistance genes, respectively.

La enfermedad ‘Encrespamiento amarillo de la hoja de tomate’, causada por Tomato Yellow Leaf Curl Virus (TYLCV-IL [CU]) ha ocasionado cuantiosos daños a las cosechas de tomate en Cuba. Existen diversos genes de resistencia a esta enfermedad que han sido introgresados a tomate desde especies silvestres de Solanum secc. Lycopersicon. El objetivo de este trabajo fue evaluar la segregación de la resistencia conferida por dos de estos genes, Ty-1 y Ty-2, como base para la selección en la mejora para la resistencia a TYLCV-IL [CU]. Se obtuvieron dos poblaciones F2 de los cruces entre el cultivar susceptible ‘Amalia’ y dos cultivares resistentes,’H-24' (Ty-2) y ‘LA3473’ (Ty-1), derivándose las poblaciones TY-2F2 y TY-1F2, respectivamente. A las plantas, con 25 días tras la siembra, se les expuso a poblaciones de moscas blancas (Bemisia tabaci, biotipo B) virulíferas (aislado cubano, TYLCV-IL [CU]) durante 48 horas, antes del trasplante a campo. A los 30 días después de la inoculación, se les evaluó el índice de severidad de los síntomas de la enfermedad mediante una escala de 0-4 y el contenido de ADN viral en hojas apicales, mediante hibridación molecular con sondas específicas para TYLCV («dot blot»). Los resultados indicaron que la distribución de la frecuencia de plantas F2 según el índice de severidad de la enfermedad y la concentración de ADN viral fue diferente en las poblaciones TY-2F2 y TY-1F2. Se sugiere seleccionar aquellas plantas que tengan valor de escala 1 para la población TY-1F2 y valor 0 para la TY-2F2 para incorporar los genes de resistencia Ty-1 y Ty-2, respectivamente.

Begomoviruses are whitefly-transmitted single-stranded DNA viruses of great economic importance in the tropics and subtropics. Several begomovirus species have been reported in tomatoes in Brazil, but only a few predominate in the field, for unknown reasons. In this study begomovirus-infected tomato samples were collected in Viçosa, State of Minas Gerais, in Nov/2009 and Dec/2010. Viral genomes were amplified, cloned and sequenced. A total of 36 DNA-A components were obtained. Sequence comparisons indicated the presence of a single begomovirus, Tomato severe rugose virus (ToSRV), with pairwise identities between isolates ranging from 97.3 to 100%. Subdivision tests indicated the existence of a single population. The analysis of variability descriptors indicated that the ToSRV population has a genetic variability similar to other begomovirus populations described in Brazil infecting tomato. Neutrality tests suggested the occurrence of purifying selection acting upon the population. Recombination analysis identified recombination events with begomoviruses from the weed species Sida micrantha. The wide distribution of ToSRV in the field and the detection of recombination indicate that continuous monitoring of viral populations in the field will be required to enable an efficient resistance-based control strategy for begomoviruses.

Develop local development strategies with a focus on gender is an objective of work in the field of local development. From this concept, this work was developed in the Municipality of San José de las Lajas "CCS Orlando Cuellar" and housewives in the villages of San Jose and the Commonwealth of Tapaste and two municipalities of the province Mayabeque: Santa Northern Cross "CCS Batabano “Jose Castellanos” and "CCS April 9," with the overall objective of Implementing participatory gender-sensitive, allowing the development of women within the contexts of agricultural study. This will involve workshops: awareness, training and exchange between farmers, using participatory appraisal techniques with a focus on gender, which helped identify the felt needs of men and women, to determine the roles, the sexual division of labor, limiting the agricultural production, marketing difficulties, and so on. Also in the sensitization workshops were built equity indicators through the method of assessment indicators and dimensions of gender equity, and strategy in the study, being selected seventeen indicators. The result of this study showed that most of the indicators were statistically significant differences among themselves, except the indicators "Women earn income from their production" and "Women and men with access to sales of products."

Desarrollar estrategias del desarrollo local con enfoque de género, constituye un objetivo de trabajo en el campo del desarrollo local. Partiendo de este concepto, el presente trabajo se desarrolló en el Municipio de San José de las Lajas “CCS Orlando Cuellar” y amas de casa de los poblados de San José y de la Comunidad de Tapaste y en dos Municipios de la Provincia Mayabeque: Santa Cruz del Norte “CCS José Castellanos y Batabanó “CCS 9 de Abril”, con el objetivo general de Implementar actividades participativas con enfoque de género, que permitan el desarrollo de la mujer dentro de los contextos agrícolas en estudio. Para ello se realizaron Talleres de: Sensibilización, Capacitación e intercambio entre productores, utilizándose técnicas del diagnóstico participativo con enfoque de género, que permitieron identificar las necesidades sentidas de hombres y mujeres, determinar los roles, la división sexual del trabajo, las limitantes en la producción agrícola, dificultades para la comercialización, etc. También en los talleres de sensibilización, se construyeron los indicadores de equidad a través del Método de Evaluación de indicadores y Dimensiones de equidad de género; como estrategia a seguir en el estudio, siendo seleccionados diecisiete indicadores. El resultado de este estudio arrojó que la mayoría de los indicadores tuvieron diferencias estadísticas significativas entre sí, excepto los indicadores “Mujeres logran ingresos a partir de sus producciones” y “Mujeres y hombres con acceso a ventas de productos”, resultados que se vieron reflejados cuando se agruparon estos indicadores en dimensiones de género, donde todas las dimensiones en estudio mostraron un salto cuantitativo respecto a la etapa inicial del estudio.

Tomato yellow leaf curl disease is one of the most important problems affecting tomato cultivation in most part of the Cuban growing areas and in other countries. The casual agent is the Tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV). At the moment several genes related with the resistance have been described. The genes Ty-1, Ty-2 and Ty-3 are those that more they have been used in the plant breeding programs of the species. In Cuba, Vyta is only variety that had Ty-1 gene and other accessions carrying the Ty-2 gene. The amplification of the gene Ty-3 was carried out for PCR and were used the specific primers FLUW-25R and FLUW-25F. In this work the presence of the band related with the resistant pattern of the gene Ty-3 was identified in one that six characterized accessions

La enfermedad del rizado amarillo del tomate, cuyo agente causal es el Tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV) constituye, uno de los principales problemas para el cultivo del tomate en las regiones productoras de Cuba y el mundo. En la actualidad se han descrito varios genes relacionados con la resistencia. Los genes Ty-1, Ty-2 y Ty-3 son los que más se han empleado en los programas de mejoramiento genético de la especie. En Cuba, solo se cuenta con una variedad portadora del gen Ty-1 y otras accesiones portadoras del gen Ty-2. La amplificación del gen Ty-3 se realizó por RCP y se utilizaron los cebadores específicos FLUW-25R y FLUW-25F.
