Abstract This article explores how different women pursued academic careers in the Faculty of Philosophy, Letters, and Human Sciences at the University of São Paulo (FFCL-USP) from 1934 to 1969. The paper provides an overview of the female presence within the student and faculty body, examining the intersection of gender and the academic profession during this period. To further explore this topic, the study narrows its focus to three female faculty members who served in the Chairs of Sociology I and II: Maria Isaura Pereira de Queiroz, Marialice Foracchi, and Maria Sylvia de Carvalho Franco. The paper highlights the fact that gender disparities have significantly influenced the opportunities available to both male and female individuals in an evolving academic and institutional culture. Resumo Este artigo explora as trajetórias de diferentes mulheres que fizeram carreira acadêmica nas primeiras décadas de funcionamento da FFCL-USP. Para tanto, traça em primeiro lugar um panorama sobre a presença de mulheres no corpo discente e docente da Faculdade entre 1934 e 1969, observando as interseções entre gênero e carreira acadêmica no período. Em segundo lugar, para aprofundar a investigação, aborda o caso de três docentes que atuaram nas Cadeiras de Sociologia I e II: Maria Isaura Pereira de Queiroz, Marialice Foracchi e Maria Sylvia de Carvalho Franco. This report presents the results of the research "Futures of work in the social sciences.” This study was based on a survey and in-depth interviews with the academic community. Two main points were investigated: perceptions of the profession and work routines. It also addressed questions on generational, gender, and racial inequalities in the area. The results provide a broad overview of academic work in the Social Sciences in Brazil.

Este relatório apresenta resultados da pesquisa "Futuros do trabalho nas ciências sociais". O estudo se baseou em um survey e na realização de entrevistas em profundidade com a comunidade acadêmica e teve como objetivos investigar as percepções acerca dos usos do tempo e das rotinas de trabalho acadêmico na área; conhecer percepções e expectativas de múltiplas gerações de cientistas sociais sobre a profissão; investigar desigualdades de geração, gênero e raça que atravessam a prática profissional na academia. Os resultados proporcionam um retrato abrangente de distintas gerações que integram a comunidade de trabalho acadêmico na área.

Resumo Este texto introduz o dossiê “Mulheres na Teoria Social”, que convida a um olhar renovado sobre a própria teoria sociológica, suas categorias e conceitos e sugere um movimento teórico permanente, que interpele as descobertas, inovações teórico-metodológicas e reflexões que diferentes mulheres intelectuais produziram – e produzem – sobre o mundo social. Ao propor a discussão sobre as mulheres na teoria social, acreditamos que obras do passado podem trazer para a órbita da sociologia clássica temas e perspectivas para os quais o cânone da sociologia é, de modo geral, menos sensível. Abstract In this essay we introduce the dossier “Women in Social Theory”, inviting to a renewed look at sociological theory, its categories and concepts, and suggesting a permanent theoretical movement that challenges discoveries, theoretical-methodological innovations and reflections that different intellectual women have produced – and still produce – on the social world. By proposing a discussion on women in social theory, we believe that works from the past can bring to the orbit of classical sociology themes and perspectives that the sociological canon has generally disregarded. Far from promoting essentialisms or stereotypes about what would be – or if there would even exist – a female writing, we suggest an effort to bring to light a new map of sociological theory, laying bare the multiplicity of themes, problems and objects that compose it. Resumo Este artigo investiga o modo como jornalistas, escritoras e ativistas disputaram os sentidos da Guerra do Vietnã (1954-1975). Para conduzir a análise, o artigo recorta movimentos de mulheres nos contextos norte-americanos e vietnamitas, explorando o trânsito transnacional de ideias, pessoas e ativismo político que promoveram. Como hipótese, sustenta que a articulação entre noções de gênero, guerra e paz estiveram na base das convergências e divergências que ajudaram a modular as alianças transnacionais de mulheres, bem como a colocar suas ideias em circulação.

Abstract This paper analyses how female journalists, writers, and activists disputed meanings of the Vietnam War (1954-1975). The article portrays women’s movements in the US and Vietnamese contexts, exploring the transnational movement of ideas, people, and political activism they promoted. As a hypothesis, it affirms that the articulation between concepts of gender, war, and peace were at the base of convergences and differences that helped to modulate the transnational alliances of women, and to circulate their ideas.

Resumo Este artigo problematiza a participação e debate o ativismo de mulheres em dois eventos: a Guerra do Vietnã (1954-1975) e as guerras pelo Curdistão (1923 em diante). Como hipótese, sustentamos que tais lutas podem ser lidas a partir do esforço comum de tornar inteligível e nomear um conjunto variado de experiências que, reorganizadas a partir ou em função do conflito armado, produzem novas mediações entre gênero e nação. O artigo está dividido em três partes: nas duas primeiras, são apresentados aspectos dos dois conflitos apontando eventuais convergências e diferenças; na sequência, observam-se as variadas formas de participação e de ativismo de mulheres existentes nos dois casos; finalmente, são debatidas as interfaces entre a produção do gênero, da guerra e das ideias, percorrendo uma multiplicidade de narrativas, experiências e relatos que apontam para a dimensão heterogênea das guerras, das nações e, portanto, do regime de ideias que deve acompanhá-las.

Abstract This paper debates women’s activism in two events: the Vietnam War (1954-1975) and the historical Kurdish struggle for autonomy (known as “Kurdish question”). We hypothesize that the reorganization of gender roles during the conflicts marks the meanings of wars and configures what we call a woman for the times of war, that is, a woman who transits across the spaces of public confrontation, armed conflict and domesticity. The approach outlined here is structured into three parts: the first and the second ones present aspects of both conflicts by pointing to possible convergences and differences between them; we also present the variety of networks of participation and activism of women in both cases. In the third and final part, we discuss the interfaces among the production of gender, war, and ideas, crossing a manifold of narratives, experiences, and stories that reveal different dimensions of wars and nations, and the diversity of the regimes of ideas that attached to them.

O artigo busca mostrar que a partir de lugares explicativos e sentidos políticos diversos, a reflexão sobre o rural e o agrário acabou por produzir diferentes definições sobre a democracia e os direitos, as quais, no limite, deram suporte a diferenciadas compreensões sobre o moderno e a modernização da sociedade brasileira. Aponta, ainda, como as novas reflexões avançaram em direção a possibilidades teóricas e empíricas que permitem afirmar a existência de conexões entre o mundo rural e a questão dos direitos no Brasil.

This article shows that the reflection on the rural and the agrarian produced different definitions of democracy and rights. Differences that, at the limit, have supported differentiated insights into the modern and the modernization of the Brazilian society. The article also points out how new ideas have moved theoretical and empirical possibilities that allow us to affirm the existence of connections between the rural world and the question of rights in Brazil.

Resumo Partindo da premissa de que escritores se encontram no ofício comum da escrita, este artigo recorta o Ciclo da cana-de-açúcar de José Lins do Rego O tempo e o vento de Erico Verissimo, bem como artigos e entrevistas de seus autores, para investigar a produção e a circulação das ideias de região e regionalismo. Investiga-se, assim, o contexto de produção de ideias com o qual os escritores dialogam, estabelecendo um repertório de temas e problemas que sendo comum a ambos, encontra equacionamentos diversos em cada caso. Procura-se, portanto, evidenciar de que modo a tensão entre particular e singular, entre local, regional e nacional, estrutura as narrativas e produz os nexos de sentido entre forma literária e processo social, produzindo um deslocamento que faz da região o problema enfrentado e não apenas o tema narrado e do regionalismo o elemento que dá forma às narrativas.

Abstract This article profiles Ciclo da cana-de-açúcar(The Sugar-Cane Cycle) of José Lins do Rego and O tempo e o vento (Time and the wind) of Erico Verissimo, as well as articles and interviews of their authors to investigate the production and circulation of region and regionalism ideas. Thus, it investigates the ideas production context with which the writers dialogue establishing a repertoire of themes and issues, which although being common to both, find different resolutions in each case. Therefore, it aims to evidence that the tension between local, regional and national organizes the narratives and produces the nexus between literary form and social process, in a movement that makes the region the problem faced and not only the narrated theme, and the regionalism a forming element of the narrative.

Este artigo aproxima os romances Fogo morto (de 1943), de José Lins do Rego, e Cidade de Deus (de 1997), de Paulo Lins, explorando a hipótese de que, ao figurarem aspectos de processos de crise social, as narrativas acionem a violência como mediação privilegiada das relações entre os indivíduos e destes com o Estado. Nesses termos, os conflitos em torno da autoridade e do poder estabelecem os nexos entre forma literária e processo social, possibilitando uma análise dos limites à efetivação dos direitos sociais e, consequentemente, da afirmação da igualdade como princípio regulador da vida republicana brasileira.

This paper approaches the novels Fogo morto (1943) by José Lins do Rego and Cidade de Deus (1997): a novel by Paulo Lins to explore the hypothesis that the narratives deals with aspects of processes of social crisis and, by doing so, trigger violence as privileged mediation of relations between these individuals and the state. Accordingly, the conflicts over authority and power establish the connections between literary form and social process, enabling to analyze the boundaries to the effectiveness of social rights and, consequently, the statement of equality as a regulatory principle of the Brazilian republican life.
