ABSTRACT. Removal of lettuce basal leaves is a technique used by the seed industry; however, the effects on seed production and physiological potential are unknown. Genetic dissimilarity is fundamental in the identification of individuals in terms of traits of interest, although it is rarely considered in relation to seeds that are tolerant to thermoinhibition. The aim of this study was to ascertain the relationship between defoliation of lettuce plants and seed yield/physiological quality, as well as the genetic dissimilarity among genotypes with regard to seed thermoinhibition. We used 35 lines of biofortified lettuce, the cultivars Uberlândia 10000, Belíssima, UFU MC BIOFORT1, and Everglades (tolerant to thermoinhibition), and Grand Rapids and Verônica (susceptible to thermoinhibition). The seed yield and physiological quality of the genotypes with and without defoliation were evaluated, artificially aged, and germinated at four temperatures in a factorial arrangement. The genetic dissimilarity was estimated by Tocher graphing and the UPGMA clustering method, based on the Mahalanobis generalized distance (D2 ii). Four UFU genotypes and Grand Rapids had high seed yields. With removal of basal leaves, there was higher seed yield per plant and there was an effect on their physiological quality. The genotypes exhibited genetic variability for thermoinhibition, with UFU-86#2#1#1 and Everglades showing similar performance.

Abstract: Precision Agriculture considers soil attributes and production aspects to define management zones. Although there is little information, it is likely that seeds produced in different management zones have different quality after chemical treatment and storage. The aim was to evaluate the physiological quality of sorghum seeds produced in different management zones, after chemical treatment and storage. The management zones were defined from interpolated maps of soil and vegetation attributes with the aid of the Smart Map - SMP plugin, in a Qgis environment. After harvest, the seeds were treated with Thiamethoxam, Imidacloprid + Thiodicarb, Fludioxonil + Metalaxyl-M and a control treatment (water). Then, they were stored for 0, 60 and 120 days. The seeds were evaluated for their quality through the following tests: moisture, germination, dry mass of seedlings, electrical conductivity, and accelerated aging. The design was completely randomized in a 4 × 3 factorial scheme, with the management zones being analyzed independently. Sorghum seed treatments with insecticides cause greater phytotoxicity during storage in both management zones, unlike the fungicide treatment. Sorghum seeds produced in high-management zones have high physiological quality and less deterioration during storage. Sorghum seeds produced in low-management zones treated with insecticides, as the storage time increases, show lower vigor due to deterioration and phytotoxicity.

Resumo: A Agricultura de Precisão considera atributos de solo e aspectos produtivos para elaboração de zonas de manejo. Apesar de poucas informações, é provável que sementes produzidas em diferentes zonas de manejo tenham qualidade distinta após o tratamento químico e armazenamento. Objetivou-se avaliar a qualidade fisiológica de sementes de sorgo produzidas em diferentes zonas de manejo, após o tratamento químico e o armazenamento de sementes. As zonas de manejo foram definidas a partir de mapas interpolados de atributos de solo e vegetação com auxílio do plugin Smart Map - SMP, em ambiente Qgis. Após a colheita, as sementes foram tratadas com Thiametoxam, Imidacloprid + Thiodicarb, Fludioxonil + Metalaxil-M e um tratamento controle (água). Em seguida foram armazenadas por 0, 60 e 120 dias. As sementes foram avaliadas quanto a sua qualidade por meio dos testes: de umidade, germinação, massa seca de plântulas, condutividade elétrica e envelhecimento acelerado. O delineamento foi inteiramente casualizado em esquema fatorial 4 × 3, sendo as zonas de manejo analisadas de forma independente. Os tratamentos de sementes de sorgo com inseticidas causam maior fitotoxidez no armazenamento em ambas as zonas de manejo ao contrário do tratamento fungicida. Sementes de sorgo produzidas em zonas de alto manejo possuem alta qualidade fisiológica e com menor deterioração no armazenamento. Sementes de sorgo produzidas em zonas de baixo manejo tratadas com inseticidas mediante aumento dos períodos de armazenamento apresentam menor vigor devido a deterioração e fitotoxidez das sementes.

Abstract: The thermoinhibition of lettuce seed germination causes important losses for producers, who do not have thermotolerant commercial cultivars. One of the obstacles has been the scarcity of optimizing techniques capable of efficiently discriminating thermotolerant and thermosensitive cultivars. The aim of this work was to evaluate the use of neural networks to discriminate different levels of thermoinhibition in lettuce seeds. Seeds of 18 cultivars were evaluated for thermoinhibition considering the characteristics of the first and last germination count and germination speed index, in seeds subjected to temperatures of 20, 25, 30 and 35 °C. The remaining seeds, which did not germinate, were subjected to the tetrazolium test. Analyses were performed immediately after seed harvesting and repeated after six months of storage. Discriminant analysis was performed and the Kohonen’s Self-Organizing Map (SOM) was created using Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs). Neural networks discriminate lettuce cultivars and organizes them in terms of seed thermoinhibition tolerance through Kohonen’s Self-Organizing Map. Discriminant analysis consistently identifies the Everglades and Luiza genotypes as tolerant to thermoinhibition.

Resumo: A termoinibição causa perdas importantes para os produtores, os quais não dispõem de cultivares comerciais com sementes termotolerantes. Há escassez de técnicas otimizadoras capazes de discriminar cultivares termotolerantes e termosensíveis com eficiência. Objetivou-se avaliar o uso de redes neurais para discriminar diferentes níveis de termoinibição em sementes de alface. Foram avaliadas sementes de 18 cultivares quanto à termoinibição considerando às características de primeira e última contagem de germinação e índice de velocidade de germinação, em sementes submetidas às temperaturas de 20, 25, 30 e 35 °C. As sementes remanescentes, que não germinaram, foram submetidas ao teste de tetrazólio. As análises foram realizadas imediatamente após a colheita das sementes e repetidas após seis meses de armazenamento. Uma análise discriminante e o Mapa Auto-Organizável de Kohonen (SOM) por Redes Neurais Artificiais (RNA’s) foram realizados. As redes neurais discriminam as cultivares de alface e as organiza quanto a tolerância a termoinibição das sementes por meio do Mapa Auto-Organizável de Kohonen. A análise discriminante indentifica de maneira coerente o genótipo Everglades e Luiza como tolerantes a termoinibição.

RESUMO A salinidade tem influência em todas as etapas da germinação e pode afetar consideravelmente o estabelecimento de plântulas em campo. Os objetivos desta pesquisa foram determinar a atividade antioxidante, o desempenho fisiológico das sementes e analisar imagens de plântulas de milho pipoca após exposição das sementes a estresse salino. Utilizou-se delineamento experimental inteiramente casualizado com quatro repetições, em arranjo fatorial com três híbridos de milho pipoca (P618, AP6002, AP8203) e cinco potenciais salinos (0,0; -0,1; -0,3; -0,6 e -0,9 MPa). A qualidade fisiológica das sementes foi avaliada por meio da primeira contagem de germinação, germinação, classificação do vigor de plântulas (plântulas normais fortes) e massa seca das plântulas. Avaliaram-se, também os comprimentos do coleóptilo e raiz, índices de vigor , uniformidade e crescimento de plântulas, mediante análise computadorizada de imagens, com utilização do software Groundeye®. A atividade de enzimas antioxidantes superóxido dismutase (SOD), ascorbato peroxidase (APX) e catalase (CAT) também foi determinada. O estresse salino compromete a qualidade fisiológica e a atividade antioxidante de sementes e o desempenho de plântulas de milho pipoca. A análise computadorizada de imagens usando Groundeye® foi eficiente na avaliação de plântulas de milho pipoca após as sementes serem submetidas ao estresse salino. Os híbridos AP6002 e AP8203 são mais tolerantes ao estresse salino.

ABSTRACT Salinity influences all germination stages and may adversely affect seedling establishment in the field. The objective of this research was to determine the relationship between the antioxidant activity and the physiological performance of seeds and to verify the efficacy of the imaging analysis of popcorn seedlings after seed exposure to saline stress. A completely randomized design was used that consisted of four replicates in a factorial scheme. This scheme comprised three popcorn hybrids (P618, AP6002, and AP8203) and five saline potential levels (0.0; -0.1; -0.3; -0.6, and -0.9 MPa) that were obtained from KCl solutions of different concentrations. First count germination, germination and seedling vigor classification (strong normal seedlings), and dry mass of seedlings were evaluated to determine the physiological quality of the seed. The images of seedlings were used to evaluate the coleoptile and root lengths, indices of vigor, uniformity, and growth using the Groundeye® software. The activities of the antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), and catalase (CAT) were also determined. Saline stress compromises the physiological quality and antioxidant activity of seeds and the performance of popcorn seedlings. Computerized image analysis using Groundeye® was efficient in evaluating the popcorn seedlings after being subjected to salt stress. Hybrids AP6002 and AP8203 were more tolerant to salt stress than hybrid P618.

RESUMO A pinta preta (Alternaria tomatophila) é uma das principais doenças do tomateiro não havendo cultivares resistentes à doença. Com isso, é necessário identificar fontes de resistência e genótipos produtivos na perspectiva de desenvolvimento de novas cultivares. Logo, objetivou com esse estudo avaliar o potencial produtivo de genótipos de tomateiro cereja cultivados no verão/outono, a severidade da pinta preta nas folhas e a incidência da doença nos frutos. Os tratamentos consistiram dos genótipos de tomateiro Carolina, Cereja Vermelho, CH 152 e CLN1561A. O delineamento experimental foi de blocos ao acaso com seis repetições, sendo a parcela experimental constituída por 16 plantas. Foram avaliadas as seguintes características: área abaixo da curva de progresso da doença (AACPD), número médio de microferimentos nos frutos (MF), número médio de frutos por cacho (NFC), número médio de cachos por planta (NCP), número médio de frutos por planta (NFP), produtividade média, número de frutos com incidência de pinta preta por planta (NFI) e a severidade da pinta preta nas folhas (%). O genótipo de tomateiro cereja CH152 apresentou tolerância à pinta preta com menor área abaixo da curva de progresso da doença, menor severidade e também não foram observados frutos com incidência de A. tomatophila nesse genótipo. O CH152 apresentou o maior número de frutos por cacho, maior número de cachos por planta, maior número de frutos por planta e maior produtividade. Esta linhagem tem grande potencial para ser integrada em programas de melhoramento genético.

ABSTRACT Early blight (caused by Alternaria tomatophila) is a major disease of tomato with no resistant cultivars. Thus, it is necessary to identify sources of resistance and productive genotypes for the development of new cultivars. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the productive potential of cherry tomato genotypes grown in the summer / fall, the severity of early blight on leaves and the incidence of disease in fruits. The treatments consisted of Carolina tomato genotypes, Cereja Vermelho, CH 152 and CLN1561A. The experimental design consisted of randomized blocks with six replications, and the experimental plot had 16 plants. The following characteristics were evaluated: area under the disease progress curve (AUDPC), average number of microinjuries on the fruits (MF), average number of fruits per bunch (NFC), average number of bunches per plant (NCP), average number of fruits per plant (NFP), average yield, number of fruits with incidence of early blight per plant (NFI) and the severity of early blight in leaves (%). The cherry tomato genotype CH152 showed tolerance to early blight with a smaller area under the disease progress curve, lower severity and fruits with incidence of A. tomatophila were not observed in this genotype. The CH152 had the highest number of fruits per bunch, greater number of bunches per plant, higher number of fruits per plant and higher productivity. This line has great potential of being integrated into breeding programs.

RESUMO A propagação do coquinho-azedo (Butia capitata) é limitada devido a dormência e a alta incidência de fungos em suas sementes. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito do tratamento de sementes de coquinho-azedo com diferentes concentrações de bactericida e/ou fungicida na incidência de fungos e na germinação das sementes. Para isto, sementes de coquinho-azedo foram imersas em quatro doses do bactericida kasugamicina (0, 1.5, 3.0 e 4.5 mL/L) e/ou em quatro concentrações do fungicida carbendazim + thiram (0, 2.92, 5.84 e 8.75 mL/Kg), totalizando 16 tratamentos. Após o tratamento, retirou-se o opérculo das sementes, as quais foram colocadas em bandejas contendo areia autoclavada, revestidas com filme plástico transparente, e mantidas em viveiro. No teste de germinação, os tratamentos foram distribuídos em delineamento de blocos casualizados em esquema fatorial 4 x 4 (doses do bactericida e doses do fungicida), com 4 repetições de 50 sementes por parcela. Para o teste de sanidade foi empregado o método do “Blotter test” em delineamento inteiramente casualizado utilizando 20 repetições com 10 sementes. A qualidade sanitária e a germinação foram avaliadas 15 e 40 dias após o tratamento das sementes, respectivamente. Não houve interação entre o bactericida e o fungicida sobre a germinação e o controle dos fungos associados às sementes. Porém, houve efeito das concentrações de fungicida sobre os parâmetros avaliados. Observou-se correlação negativa entre as concentrações do fungicida carbendazim + thiram e a incidência fúngica e correlação positiva entre as concentrações do fungicida e a germinação das sementes. Portanto, o tratamento fungicida reduz a incidência fúngica e propicia melhor germinação das sementes do coquinho-azedo.

ABSTRACT Propagation of “coquinho-azedo” (Butia capitata) is limited due to dormancy and high incidence of fungi in its seeds. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of treating “coquinho-azedo” seeds with different concentrations of bactericide and/or fungicide on the incidence of fungi and on the germination of seeds. Thus, B. capitata seeds were immersed in four doses of the bactericide kasugamycin (0, 1.5, 3.0 and 4.5 mL/L) and/or in four concentrations of the fungicide carbendazim+ thiram (0, 2.92, 5.84 e 8.75 mL/Kg), totaling 16 treatments. After the treatments, the operculum was removed from the seeds, which were placed on trays containing autoclaved sand, covered with transparent plastic film and kept in the nursery. In the germination test, treatments were distributed in randomized block design, factorial arrangement of 4x4 (bactericidal doses x fungicide doses), with four replicates of 50 seeds per plot. For the test of seed health quality, the Blotter test was employed in completely randomized design, using 20 replicates and 10 seeds. Health quality and germination were evaluated at 15 and 40 days after the treatment of seeds, respectively. There was no interaction between the bactericide and the fungicide on germination and control of fungi associated with seeds. However, there was an effect of fungicide concentrations on the evaluated parameters. We observed a negative correlation between the concentrations of the fungicide carbendazim + thiram and fungal incidence, and a positive correlation between the fungicide concentrations and seed germination. Therefore, fungicide treatment reduces the fungal incidence and provides better germination of B. capitata seeds.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar os padrões eletroforéticos das proteínas resistentes ao calor e a atividade da enzima endo-β-mananase durante a germinação de sementes de alface, em alta temperatura. Sementes de oito cultivares de alface foram submetidas aos testes de germinação, primeira contagem e emergência em duas temperaturas, 20 e 35ºC. Foram calculados o índice de velocidade de germinação (IVG) e o índice de velocidade de emergência (IVE). Avaliou-se, também, a expressão das proteínas resistentes ao calor e da enzima endo-β-mananase, para todos os tratamentos. Utilizou-se o delineamento experimental inteiramente casualizado, em arranjo fatorial 2x8, com duas temperaturas e oito cultivares. A maior germinação é observada a 35ºC na cultivar Everglades, considerada termotolerante. Os padrões de proteínas resistentes ao calor em sementes de alface apresentam bandas específicas na cultivar Everglades, a 35ºC. A atividade da enzima endo-β-mananase é maior na cultivar Everglades, nessa temperatura. Essa cultivar tem potencial para utilização em programas de melhoramento de alface com vistas à tolerância a altas temperaturas durante a germinação.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the electrophoretic patterns of heat-tolerant proteins and the activity of the endo-β-mannanase enzyme during lettuce seed germination, at high temperature. Seeds of eight lettuce cultivars were subjected to germination, first count, and emergence tests at two temperatures, 20 and 35ºC. The index of germination speed (IVG) and the emergence rate index (IVE) were calculated. The expression of heat-tolerant proteins and of the endo-β-mannanase enzyme was also evaluated for all treatments. The experimental design was completely randomized, in a 2x8 factorial arrangement, with two temperatures and eight cultivars. The highest germination is observed at 35ºC in the Everglades cultivar, considered thermotolerant. The patterns of heat-tolerant proteins in lettuce seeds present specific bands in the Everglades cultivar, at 35ºC. The activity of the endo-β-mannanase enzyme is higher in the Everglades cultivar, at this temperature. This cultivar has potential for use in lettuce breeding programs aiming for tolerance to high temperatures during germination.

Objetivou-se com este trabalho avaliar a qualidade sanitária e fisiológica de quatorze variedades de sementes de milho crioulas em pré e pós-armazenamento em embalagens de polietileno tereftalato (PET). Houve efeito das variedades e das épocas de avaliações sobre a incidência de fungos e germinação. Dentre a micobiota observada, Fusarium moniliforme (88%), Penicillium spp. (6,9%) e Aspergillus spp. (2,1%) tiveram a maior porcentagem de incidência. Após o armazenamento, houve decréscimo de F. moniliforme (69%) e aumento de Penicillium spp. (35%) e Aspergillus spp. (22%). A incidência desses fungos não comprometeu a qualidade fisiológica das sementes, que apresentaram elevadas porcentagens de vigor e germinação.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the sanitary and physiological quality of fourteen varieties of creole corn seeds in pre-and post-storage in packaging of polyethylene terephthalate (PET). Among the mycobiota observed Fusarium moniliforme (88%), Penicillium spp. (6,9%) and Aspergillus spp. (2,1%) had the highest incidence. After storage there was a slight decrease in the percentage of F. moniliforme (69%) and a increase of Penicillium spp. (35%) and Aspergillus spp. (22%). The incidence of these fungi did not compromise the physiological quality of seeds that showed high percentages of vigor and germination.

Os objetivos deste trabalho foram avaliar a qualidade física, fisiológica e sanitária de sementes de 17 variedades de milho crioulo antes e após armazenagem em garrafas PET e comparar os resultados aos padrões já estabelecidos para comercialização de cultivares comerciais de milho. Foram realizados os testes de pureza física, retenção de peneiras, massa de 1000 sementes, grau de umidade, germinação, emergência em canteiro, índices de velocidade de germinação e emergência das sementes, além de exame de sementes infestadas. Pelos resultados obtidos, é possível concluir que as sementes de milho crioulo das diferentes variedades apresentam alta porcentagem de pureza física e germinação mesmo após o armazenamento, com valores acima dos padrões mínimos exigidos para comercialização de sementes de milho (98 e 85%, respectivamente). O grau de umidade das sementes das diferentes variedades de milho crioulo antes e após o armazenamento permaneceu abaixo de 13%, destacando-se a aptidão da região norte de Minas Gerais para a produção e conservação de sementes de qualidade. Três variedades apresentaram porcentagem de infestação superior ao padrão máximo recomendado (3%), sendo, portanto, necessário aprimorar o controle de pragas de grãos armazenados. São necessárias melhorias para uniformização de classificação das sementes por peneiras, já que as amostras de três variedades não alcançaram o padrão mínimo de 94% em uma mesma peneira, exigido pela legislação.

The objective of this research was to evaluate the physical, physiological and sanitary quality of corn seeds of 17 maize varieties (landraces) before and after storage in PET bottles. The seeds were submitted to the following tests: physical purity, retention on sieves, weight of 1000 seeds, germination, seed moisture content, emergence in flowerbed, infested seed exam and seed health (deep-freezing method). Germination and emergence velocity index were determined. Maize landraces seeds of different varieties presented a great percentage of physical purity and germination, which were over the minimum standards values required for commercialization of corn seeds (98 and 85%, respectively), even after storage. Seed moisture content remained below 13% before and after storage, standing out the potential of Nothern Minas Gerais for production and conservation of high-quality seeds. Three varieties presented infestation higher than the maximum values accepted for corn seeds commercialization (3%), indicating the need of better pests control during storage. Samples of three varieties have not reached satisfy standard values of retention on the same sieve (94%), indicating the need of better standardization on size classification of some seed lots.
