Abstract In this study, the effect of temperature on the growth of the European pepper moth, Duponchelia fovealis (Zeller), was assessed at five constant temperatures (18, 21, 24, 27 and 30 °C). The European pepper moth was observed to complete its developmental stages (from egg to adult) at all the temperatures evaluated. From the results, it was evident that temperature affected the rate and development time of all the growth stages, to a significant degree. The length in time of the embryonic, larval, pupal and total (egg-adult) stages was observed to drop as the temperature rose from 18 to 24 °C, but remained constant between 27 and 30 °C. The developmental time in the pre-pupal stage dropped between 18 and 30 °C. The European pepper moth takes 454 degree-days to complete development at 11.7 °C temperature threshold. The D. fovealis survival was thus inversely proportional to temperature over range of 18 to 30 °C. On assessing the number of annual generations for the five largest strawberry-producing municipalities in Espírito Santo State, an average of 5.5 generations per year was estimated. This is a first report of temperature on D. fovealis development.

Trichogramma spp. são parasitoides utilizados na regulação de populações de insetos que podem causar danos econômicos. Para que esses tenham bom desempenho é essencial o conhecimento de algumas de suas características biológicas. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar se o acasalamento interfere nas características biológicas de uma população deTrichogramma pretiosum coletada em campo. Em todos os experimentos, grupos de fêmeas acasaladas e não acasaladas foram utilizados. Além disso, foi verificada a interferência do acasalamento nas características biológicas dos descendentes. Foi constatado que o acasalamento é capaz de alterar o parasitismo e a longevidade das fêmeas genitoras, além de alterar a longevidade entre os descendentes, porém, uma vez parasitados, os ovos se desenvolvem normalmente, apresentando viabilidade e número de descendentes similares aos das fêmeas não acasaladas. Verificamos ainda, que a população de T. pretiosum coletada em campo apresentou indivíduos com características reprodutivas telítocas e arrenótocas. Esse fato ressalta a importância de investigações cuidadosas sobre o modo de reprodução das populações coletadas em campo, evitando assim problemas de eficiência no manejo de populações de insetos.

Trichogramma spp. are parasitoids used in the regulation of insect populations that can cause economic damage. In order to ensure good performance, understanding some of their biological characteristics is essential. The objective of this study is to evaluate whether mating interferes with the biological characteristics of a population of Trichogramma pretiosum collected in the field. In all experiments, groups of mated and unmated females were used. We also verified any interference from mating on the biological characteristics of the offspring. We found that mating can alter the parasitism and longevity of genitor females, in addition to changing longevity among the descendants, but once parasitized, the eggs develop normally, showing similar emergence percentage and number of offspring as those from unmated females. In addition, we verified that the population of T. pretiosum collected in the field presented individuals with reproductive thelytokous and arrhenotokous characteristics. This fact highlights the importance of careful investigation on the reproduction mode of populations collected in the field, thus avoiding problems in the effective management of insect populations.

Comumente dados de precipitação pluvial apresentam variação e a obtenção da estimativa de sua distribuição espacial é primordial no planejamento agrícola e ambiental. O objetivo neste trabalho foi comparar o método de estimação dos mínimos quadrados ponderados para ajuste de modelos ao semivariograma com o método de tentativa e erro, através da técnica de auto-validação "jack-knifing", para dados de precipitação pluvial média anual do Estado de São Paulo. Observações de precipitação correspondentes ao período de 1957 a 1997 foram usadas para trezentos e setenta e nove (379) estações pluviométricas abrangendo todo o Estado de São Paulo, representando uma área de aproximadamente 248.808,8 km². A periodicidade exibida pelos semivariogramas foi ajustada pelo modelo "hole effect", em que os parâmetros foram estimados com maior precisão pelo método de mínimos quadrados ponderados quando comparado com o método de tentativa e erro. O método de auto-validação "jack-knifing" mostrou-se adequado para a definição de métodos e modelos a serem usados para semivariâncias, cujo procedimento permitiu definir dezesseis vizinhos como o número ideal para a estimativa por krigagem de valores de precipitação pluvial para locais não amostrados no Estado de São Paulo.

Rainfall data presents variability and the attainment of the estimate of its space distribution is essencial in agricultural and environmental planning. The objective of this work is to compare the weighted least squares estimation method for semivariogram modeling with the trial and error fitting estimation method through the jack-knifing validation technique to annual average rainfall in the São Paulo State. Rainfall observations corresponding to the period from 1957 to 1997, from 379 rain gauge stations covering entire São Paulo State, representing an area of approximately 248,808.8 km² were used in this study. The parameters for the hole effect model, used to describe the periodicity exhibited by the semivariograms, were more precisely estimated by using the weighted least square estimation method when compared with the manual fitting method. The jack-knifing technique showed itself to be an adequate tool for the definition of methods and models to be used for semivariance. It also allowed for the definition of 16 neighbors as the ideal number to estimate by kriging the unsampled locations.

O objetivo deste trabalho é comparar três interpoladores univariados: inverso do quadrado da distância, curvatura mínima e krigagem ordinária usando observações de precipitação pluvial média anual de 1.027 postos pluviométricos abrangendo todo o Estado de São Paulo, representando área de 248.808,8 km² (2,91% do território nacional), no período de 1957 a 1997. Os mapas de variabilidade espacial não apresentaram grandes diferenças visuais; entretanto, quando a estatística quadrado médio do erro foi calculada para cada técnica, confirmou-se a grande vantagem em usar o interpolador ótimo de krigagem. A diferença entre os valores observados e estimados pela krigagem foi muito menor do que para os outros dois métodos, indicando ser esse o interpolador a ser usado na distribuição espacial de precipitação pluvial média anual para os dados em estudo.

The objective of this paper is to compare three unvaried interpolation algorithms: inverse square distance, minimum curvature and ordinary kriging using observations of annual precipitation average of one thousand and twenty-seven climatic stations including all State of São Paulo, representing an area of approximately 248,808.8 km² (2,91% of the brazilian territory), from 1957 to 1997. The maps of spatial variability didn't present great visual differences, however when the comparison criterion, the mean square error of prediction was calculated for each technique, the great advantage was confirmed by using kriging interpolator. The difference among the observed and predicted values for kriging was much smaller than for the other two methods, indicating to be this the interpolator to be used in the spatial distribution of annual precipitation for this data.
