Abstract The hybrids UENF N01, N02 and N03 have enhanced nitrogen-use efficiency, particularly in terms of N responsiveness, which makes them ideal for low-input cultivation. ABSTRACT The present study resulted from the lack of information on the genotypic expression ruling the resistance to rust and on the main traits of economic importance to the herein addressed crop. The combining ability of 16 popcorn lines and hybrids was assessed in partial diallel cross in two representative locations in Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil, where forty simple hybrids were obtained. The experiments followed a completely randomized block design with four repetitions and were conducted under natural infestation conditions in order to test the southern rust severity in the entire plant (SSW) and in the leaf of the first ear (SFPE), as well as the morpho-agronomic traits of greater interest: grain yield (GY) and popping expansion (PE). Additive gene effects prevailed in PE and the non-additive ones stood out in GY; however, both gene effects were important to the southern rust resistance characteristics (SSW and SFPE). Hybrids L65 × P10 and P7 × L70 presented appropriate specific combining ability (SCA) values in all traits; therefore, they were promising for the selection of superior genotypes. Lines L80, L76 and L77 expressed negative general combining ability (GCA) values in SSW and SFPE; line P10 recorded high and positiveGCA values in GY and PE.

ABSTRACT The aim of the present study was to investigate relations among ten traits in super-sweet corn genotypes assessed by means of simple correlation, path and canonical variable analyses, as well as to investigate the relative importance of such traits to the super-sweet corn breeding program developed at Darcy Ribeiro Northern Fluminense State University in order to develop strategies able to improve the efficiency in the selection of superior genotypes. Thus, trials comprising 3 × 6 partial diallel of super-sweet (sh2) corn were carried out, according to a short_textrandomized block design (RBD)short_text with four repetitions, in two different environments located in Northern Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil (Itaocara and Campos dos Goytacazes counties). The correlation study showed that traits such as ear diameter and useful short_textearshort_text length contributed the most to increase short_textearshort_text yield (without husk); the variable ear diameter stood out for having stronger direct effect on ear yield, as well as for presenting high heritability (0.95). The trait number of grains per ear row contributed the most to the variation between hybrids, whereas the trait useful ear length contributed the least. The canonical variables showed that the genetic backgrounds of sh2-gene donor populations had effect on recurrent populations, even after five backcrossing cycles, thus resulting in the formation of two divergent groups.

ABSTRACT Selection indices were applied to data sets of 169 half-sib families of the popcorn composites UEM-Co1 and UEM-Co2 in four cycles of recurrent selection. From 2005 to 2008, the experiments were arranged in a 13 by 13 lattice square design, with two replications per cycle and composite. Genetic gains for popping expansion (PE) and grain yield (GY) were estimated based on several selection indices and truncation selection. The magnitude and balance of gains estimated for each trait by the indices were compared by an auxiliary statistical value (Ci). This value Ci consists of an arbitrary value, resulting from differences between the gains estimated for n traits by truncation selection and by index i. The indices of Subandi and Mulamba and Mock were the most promising to estimate high and balanced genetic gains for PE and GY in recurrent selection of half-sib popcorn families.

ABSTRACT Because of its multi-purpose nature, popcorn has sparked the interest of the World Trade Organization as regards fungal contamination by mycotoxins. However, no investigations have been conducted on popcorn for resistance of genotypes to ear rot. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential of popcorn genotypes as to resistance to ear rot and rotten kernels, as an initial step for the implementation of a breeding program with the popcorn crop in Northern Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil. Thirty-seven accessions from different ecogeographic regions of Latin America were evaluated in 2 cultivation periods, in a randomized block design with 4 replications. We evaluated the incidence of rotten ears, incidence of rotten ears caused by Fusarium spp., severity of ears with Fusarium spp. rot, and incidence of rotten kernels. The results were subjected to analysis of variance, and means were compared by the Scott-Knott clustering test (p < 0.05). A significant effect was observed for all evaluated variables, characterizing them as efficient in the discrimination of genotypic variability for reaction to fungal injuries in popcorn. The gene pool of the tropical and temperate Germplasm Collection evaluated here has the potential to generate superior segregants and provide hybrid combinations with alleles of resistance to diseases affecting ears and stored kernels. Based on the different variables and times, the experiment was conducted, and genotypes L65, L80, and IAC 125 showed the highest levels of resistance.

Abstract Guava plays an important role in Brazilian agribusiness. Among other goals, guava breeding programs aim to achieve more productive cultivars and improved fruit quality. Thus, the present study aimed to investigate genetic variability in full-sib progenies of Psidium guajava (guava) and estimate the genetic progress obtained from different selection criteria in order to select the most promising genotypes. This is the first work that uses these criteria of selection to guava. The experiment was conducted in randomized block design with 2 replicates, and 10 progenies were assessed, with 12 plants per plot. Direct and indirect selection and the classic index with 2 economic weights were used for predicting the genetic gain between and within progenies. The 5 best progenies among those analyzed and 4 plants within the progenies were selected. Direct selection provided higher gains for number of fruits, and indirect selection generated small gains for the other traits. When the trial values were used as economic weight, the classic index was the selection criterion that showed the best results for gains in fruit number and fruit weight, being indicated as the most appropriate selection strategy for genetic breeding in the studied population.

RESUMO O objetivo deste trabalho foi estimar a capacidade de combinação de 47 linhagens de milho desenvolvidas pela Universidade Estadual de Maringá, no sentido de identificar as linhagens mais promissoras para utilização em programas de melhoramento voltados para safrinha. Para isso, as linhagens foram cruzadas em topcrosses com dois híbridos comerciais adaptados à safrinha (P30K75 e AG9010), utilizados como testadores de base genética estreita. Os topcrosses foram avaliados em experimentos delineados em blocos completos ao acaso, com duas repetições, e alocados em quatro locais representativos para a safrinha, nos estados do Paraná, São Paulo e Mato Grosso do Sul. Adicionalmente, as linhagens per se foram avaliadas em um experimento em Floresta, PR. Foram avaliados os caracteres: (i) rendimento de grãos, em kg ha-1; (ii) florescimento feminino e masculino; (iii) tolerância ao estresse hídrico. Para as linhagens per se, os quadrados médios foram significativos (p < 0,05) para rendimento de grãos e florescimento. As capacidades gerais para testadores e linhagens e, específica de combinação entre linhagens e testadores, foram significativas (p < 0,05) para todas as características avaliadas. A linhagem 21 destacou-se pela alta capacidade geral de combinação () para rendimento de grãos, nos quatro ambientes. Nas linhagens 4, 37, 38, 39 e 47 constataram-serelevantes para rendimento de grãos, em dois ambientes, inclusive sob condições de estresse hídrico, e para florescimento. As combinações AG9010 x linhagem 37 e P30K75 x linhagem 18 tiveram destaque e as linhagens 18 e 37 foram indicadas como testadoras de novas linhagens oriundas dos testadores.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was estimate the combining abilities of 47 maize inbred lines, developed by the Universidade Estadual de Maringá, in order to identify the most promising ones regarding maize breeding programs focused on the second crop. For this, the lines were crossed in topcrosses scheme with two hybrids adapted to second crop (P30K75 e AG9010), used as narrow genetic base testers. Topcrosses were evaluated in randomized block design, with two repetitions, in four key-locations for the second crop along the states of Paraná, São Paulo and Mato Grosso do Sul. In addition, the lines per se were evaluated in Floresta-PR. The following traits were evaluated: (i) grain yield, in kg ha-1; (ii) male and female flowering; (iii) tolerance to drought stress. For the inbred lines per se, the mean squares were significant (p < 0.05) for both grain yield and flowering. The general combining ability of testers and lines and the specific combining ability between testers and lines were significant (p < 0.05) for all traits. The line 21 was outstanding because of the high general combining ability along the four environments. Among the lines 4, 37, 38, 39 e 47, relevant general combining ability effects () were verified for grain yield, at least in two environments including drought stress environment, and flowering. The combinations AG9010 × Line 37 and P30K75 × Line 18 was outstanding, 18 and 37 were indicated as testers for new lines coming the testers.

ResumoEm mamoeiro, informações sobre o controle genético de características relacionadas à produção e à qualidade de frutos ainda são escassas. Nesse sentido, no presente estudo, foram estimados os parâmetros genéticos durante a análise da herança de características relacionadas à produção e à qualidade de seus frutos, por meio de cruzamento dialélico completo (F1's, recíprocos e genitores). Quantificaram-se o número de frutos comerciais (NFC), o peso médio do fruto (PMF), a produtividade (PROD), a espessura (ESP) e firmeza do fruto (FIRM) e o teor de sólidos solúveis (TSS). Somente NFC, FIRM e TSS tiveram ausência de significância nos três testes de suficiência do modelo aditivo-dominante. A estimativa do grau médio de dominância indicou a existência de dominância parcial entre os alelos que atuam no controle genético das três características. Observou-se o predomínio de efeitos associados a componentes aditivos se comparados aos componentes associados aos efeitos de dominância para as três características. Para número de frutos comerciais (NFC) e firmeza do fruto (FIRM), alelos recessivos, predominante, mas não exclusivamente, atuam no sentido de aumentar a média dessa variável. Por outro lado, para teor de sólidos solúveis (TSS), são os alelos dominantes que, predominante, mas não exclusivamente, atuam no sentido de aumentar a média dessa variável.

AbstractIn papaya, information on the genetic control of traits related to the production and fruit quality are still scarce. In this sense, this study estimated genetic parameters and analyzed the inheritance of traits related to the production and quality of papaya fruit through complete diallel cross (F1's, reciprocal and parents). The number of commercial fruit, fruit weight, fruit yield, thickness of the pulp, firmness of the fruit and the soluble solids content were quantified. Number of commercial fruit, firmness of the fruit and the total soluble solids content had no significant effect in the three sufficiency tests of the additive-dominant model. The estimate of the average degree of dominance indicated partial dominance between alleles that act in the genetic control of the three traits. There was predominance of effects associated with additive components compared to the components associated with dominance effects for the three traits. For the number of marketable fruits and fruit firmness, predominant, but not exclusive recessive alleles, work to increase the mean value of this variable. In turn, for soluble solids content, predominant, but not exclusive dominant alleles, work to increase the mean value of this variable.

Genótipos crioulos são importantes fontes de genes de adaptação, rusticidade e resistência de plantas a doenças bióticas e a estresse ambiental. Avaliou-se neste trabalho o potencial genético de contribuição de genótipos crioulos de mamoeiro na resistência a mancha-de-phoma. O experimento, implantado em blocos casualizados com seis repetições, foi composto de 24 progênies dioicas de meios-irmãos de mamoeiro que segregaram para o sexo, sendo avaliadas apenas as plantas com flores femininas. Foram estimados os componentes de variância e o valor genético de progênies para incidência e severidade de mancha-de-phoma via modelos mistos. As estimativas de herdabilidade e acurácia seletiva permitiram predizer situação muito favorável à seleção de progênies resistentes, com destaque para as progênies STA-02, STA-04, STA-05, STA-06, STA-07, STA-11, STA-12, STA-16, STA-21 e STA-22, com valores negativos de efeitos genéticos aditivos tanto para severidade quanto para incidência da doença nas folhas.

Landraces genotypes present with source of genes for adaptation, rusticity and resistance to disease and environmental stress. In this work the potential of landraces papaya genotypes in contributing to resistance genes phoma-spot was evaluated. The experiment was implemented in a randomized block design with six replications, was composed of 24 half-sib progenies of dioecious papaya - which segregated for sex. Only plants with female flowers were evaluated and estimate variance components and predict genetic value of landraces to incidence and severity of phoma-spot, by mixed model. Heritability estimates and selective accuracy demonstrate a favorable situation to the selection of progeny that can contribute to the reduction of disease. 'STA-02', 'STA-04', 'STA-05', 'STA-06', 'STA-07', 'STA-11', 'STA-12', 'STA-16', 'STA-21' and 'STA-22' showed negative values of additive genetic effects for both t incidence and severity of phoma-spot.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi comparar quatro índices de seleção e o método REML/Blup na avaliação de ganhos genéticos preditos das características de interesse ao programa de melhoramento do milho-pipoca UENF 14. Foram avaliadas 200 progênies de irmãos-completos, em uma safra, em dois ambientes (regiões Norte e Noroeste do Estado do Rio de Janeiro), com duas repetições, o que totalizou 800 observações. Avaliaram-se as características altura média de plantas, altura média de inserção da primeira espiga, estande final, tombamento, diâmetro de colmo, prolificidade, rendimento e capacidade de expansão dos grãos. Entre os índices de seleção testados, o de Mulamba & Mock proporcionou os melhores resultados para a seleção das progênies de irmãos-completos. O método REML/Blup mostrou-se muito eficiente, tendo selecionado progênies com desempenhos relativos elevados e com ganhos genéticos preditos melhores que os dos índices de seleção testados. As progênies selecionadas com uso do método REML/Blup, para maior rendimento de grãos, não são as mesmas selecionadas para maior capacidade de expansão. O índice de Mulamba & Mock e o método REML/Blup proporcionam os melhores ganhos preditos para a população UENF 14.

The objective of this work was to compare four selection indices and the REML/Blup method in the evaluation of the predicted genetic gains for the characteristics of interest to the breeding program of the UENF 14 popcorn. Two hundred full-sib progenies were evaluated in one season, in two locations (North and Northwest Regions of the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), with two replicates, totaling 800 observations. The characteristics evaluated were average plant height, average height of first ear insertion, final stand, tipping, stem diameter, prolificacy, grain yield and popping expansion. Among the selection indices tested, Mulamba & Mock's provided the best results for selection of full-sib progenies. The REML/Blup method proved to be very efficient, selecting progenies with high relative performance and better predicted genetic gains than those of the selection indices tested. The progenies selected using the REML/Blup method, for highest grain yield, are not the same as those selected for higher popping expansion. The Mulamba & Mock index and the REML/Blup method provide the best predicted gains for the UENF 14 population.

Neste trabalho foram estimados parâmetros genéticos e estudou-se a herança da resistência do mamoeiro às doenças pinta-preta, oídio e mancha-de-phoma, em cruzamentos dialélicos no campo. Avaliaram-se 56 combinações (F1s e recíprocos) e oito genitores, quatro do grupo Formosa (Maradol, JS12-N, JS12-4 e Sekati) e quatro do grupo Solo (Waimanalo, Golden, Sunrise Solo 72-12 e São Mateus). Quantificaram-se a severidade de pinta-preta em folha e em fruto, e a severidade de oídio e mancha-de-phoma em folha. Efetuou-se análise de variância conjunta dos dados, considerando-se, além dos cruzamentos, a época de avaliação como fontes de variação. A severidade de pinta-preta em folha e em fruto e a severidade de oídio em folha tiveram ausência de significância nos três testes de suficiência do modelo aditivo-dominante. Observou-se a existência de pelo menos quatro genes ou blocos gênicos com dominância para severidade de oídio e ao menos um para severidade de pinta-preta em folha e fruto. Para severidade de oídio, os efeitos gênicos aditivos foram mais importantes. Efeitos gênicos aditivos e não aditivos, por sua vez, foram igualmente importantes tanto para severidade de pinta-preta em folha, quanto para severidade em fruto. Constatou-se efeito de dominância parcial para severidade de oídio e dominância completa para severidade de pinta-preta em folha e em fruto. Sekati foi o genitor que apresentou a maior concentração de alelos favoráveis para a redução da severidade de pinta-preta e de oídio.

This study aimed to estimate genetic parameters and to study the inheritance of resistance to papaya black-spot, powdery-mildew and phoma-spot through diallel cross on a field plot experiment. The 56 hybrid combinations (F1's and reciprocals) and eight genotypes of papaya, four of 'Formosa' group ('Maradol', 'JS12-N', 'JS12-4' and 'Sekati') and four of the 'Solo' group ('Waimanalo', 'Golden', 'Sunrise Solo 72-12' and 'São Mateus') were evaluated. The severities of black spot on leaf and fruit and the severity of powdery mildew and phoma spot in leaf were quantified. The analyses of variance of the data were performed considering the intersections and the season (evaluation date) as sources of variation. The severity of black-spot on leaf and fruit and the severity of powdery-mildew had absence of significance concerning the three tests of sufficiency for the additive dominant model. The estimated numbers of genes or gene blocks with dominance indicated the existence of at least four genes or gene blocks to severity of powdery mildew and at least one for severities of black-spot on leaf and fruit. For severity of powdery mildew additive gene effects were more important. Additives and non-additives gene effects were important to the severities of black-spot on leaf and fruit. It was observed effect of partial dominance for severity powdery mildew and complete dominance for severities of black-spot on leaf and fruit. The parent 'Sekati' presented the highest concentration of favorable alleles for the reduction of the black-spot and powdery mildew.
