Abstract Thus, the objective of this work was to evaluate the performance of industrial drying and the quality of soybean grains using a direct-fire furnace automatically fed by wood chips. To represent the grains before drying, four samples were collected together with the sampling of the loads in the trucks carried out to classify the product in the storage unit. At drying, performance evaluations and specific energy consumption were carried out. The grains were evaluated for moisture content, germination, electrical conductivity, apparent specific mass, color, acidity index, and PAHs. Drying showed an average efficiency of 75.50%. The average chip consumption was 0.4403 kg of chip/kg of evaporated water. The specific energy consumption was 8,099.50 kJ/kg of evaporated water. The grains showed differences after drying in the characteristics of germination, electrical conductivity, and chroma. Six PAHs were detected in the samples before drying: (B(a)A, Chr, 5 MC, B(j)F, Dib(ai)P, and IcdP). After drying, in addition to the PAHs obtained before drying, five more were detected (B(b)F, B(k)F, B(a)P, Dib(al)P, and Dib(ah)A). Mean PAH concentrations were higher than the maximum values allowed by European Union legislation.

RESUMO O uso de dessecantes permite antecipar a colheita do feijão-caupi em época mais próxima à maturidade fisiológica. Os dessecantes saflufenacil e flumioxazina promovem a secagem e queda das folhas e a perda de água das sementes. Objetivou-se nesta pesquisa avaliar os efeitos de doses de saflufenacil e flumioxazina aplicadas na cultura do feijão-caupi sobre a produção e qualidade das sementes por ocasião da colheita e após o armazenamento por seis meses. No primeiro experimento, os tratamentos foram arranjados em parcelas subdivididas (5 x 2), em que o fator principal foi constituído das doses de saflufenacil (0, 25, 50, 100 e 150 g i.a ha-1) e o fator secundário das épocas de avaliação: após a colheita e seis meses após a colheita. No mesmo arranjo, no segundo ensaio o fator principal constou das doses do herbicida flumioxazina (0, 10, 20, 30 e 40 g i.a ha-1) e o fator secundário das mesmas épocas de avaliação. Os tratamentos foram delineados em blocos ao acaso, com quatro repetições. A aplicação de saflufenacil a partir de 25 g ha-1 comprometeu os componentes de produção e qualidade tecnológica, enquanto as doses de flumioxazina não comprometeram os componentes de produção. O armazenamento a 20 ºC por seis meses diminuiu a qualidade fisiológica de sementes. A aplicação de flumioxazina na colheita do feijão-caupi promoveu a uniformidade da maturidade e a antecipação de colheita, sem comprometer a qualidade fisiológica após a colheita.

ABSTRACT The use of desiccants allows to anticipate cowpea harvest at a time closer to physiological maturity. The desiccants saflufenacil and flumioxazin promote the drying and falling of leaves and loss of water from seeds. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of saflufenacil and flumioxazin doses applied to the cowpea crop on the production and quality of seeds at harvest and after storage for six months. Two experiments were carried out in a split-plot design (5 × 2). In the first experiment, the main factor consisted of saflufenacil doses (0, 25, 50, 100, and 150 g ai ha-1), while the second factor consisted of evaluation periods (after harvest and six months after harvest). In the second experiment, the main factor consisted of flumioxazin doses (0, 10, 20, 30, and 40 g ai ha-1) and the second factor consisted of the same evaluation periods. The treatments were designed in randomized blocks, with four replications. Saflufenacil application from 25 g ha-1 compromised the yield components and technological quality, while flumioxazin doses did not affect the yield components. Storage at 20 °C for six months decreased the physiological quality of seeds. Flumioxazin application at cowpea harvest promoted uniformity of maturity and harvest anticipation, without compromising the physiological quality after harvest.

Abstract The baru (Dipteryx alata Vogel), is fruit tree displaying economic, environmental, industrial and food importance. The objective of this study was to adapt to the tetrazolium test methodology to baru seeds and evaluate the physiological quality of seeds stored for 12 months at 10 and 20 ºC, using X-ray images as a toll for detection damage throughout the storage period while also carrying out germination, emergence and electrical conductivity tests. Baru seeds remained viable for 12 months of storage, albeit with a small decrease in vigor after nine months. The applied tetrazolium test methodology was efficient in determining internal seed damage. The pre-soak time for the tetrazolium test and solution concentration was 24 hours and 0.05%. No changes in seed morphology and radiographic images were observed during the storage periods, regardless of the assessed temperature. The X-ray test enabled a precise visualization of internal baru seed structures.

Resumo: O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar os efeitos de herbicidas dessecantes aplicados em pré-colheita sobre o rendimento, a qualidade fisiológica e tecnológica de sementes de feijão-caupi após a colheita e o armazenamento. O experimento foi conduzido em delineamento de blocos ao acaso, com quatro repetições. Adotou-se o esquema de parcelas subdivididas (6 x 2), compostas pelos herbicidas dessecantes: flumioxazim (30 g i.a.ha-1), glufosinato de amônio (500 g i.a.ha-1), paraquate (400 g i.a.ha-1), saflufenacil (70 g i.a.ha-1), carfentrazone (24 g i.a.ha-1) e uma testemunha não tratada, por duas épocas de avaliação das sementes: colheita e seis meses após a colheita. A aplicação dos dessecantes ocorreu no estágio R5. Os dessecantes afetaram o rendimento, a classificação, a coloração e a qualidade fisiológica das sementes da cultivar BRS Guariba. Os herbicidas glufosinato de amônio e paraquate comprometeram a qualidade fisiológica das sementes. O flumioxazin não afetou os componentes de rendimento, a coloração e a qualidade fisiológica. O armazenamento a 20 °C por seis meses afetou a qualidade fisiológica das sementes.

Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of pre-harvest desiccant herbicides on the yield and the physiological and technological quality of cowpea seeds after harvest and after storage. The experiment was conducted in a randomized block design with four replications. A split-plot design (6 × 2) was composed of the desiccant herbicides flumioxazin (30 g ai.ha-1), glufosinate ammonium (500 g ai.ha-1), paraquat (400 g ai.ha-1), saflufenacil (70 g ai.ha-1), and carfentrazone (24 g ai.ha-1) and an untreated control, as well as two seed evaluation periods, at harvest and six months after h arvest. Desiccants were applied at the R5 stage. The desiccants affected the yield, classification, color, and physiological quality of seeds of ‘BRS Guariba’. The glufosinate ammonium and paraquat herbicides compromised seed physiological quality. Flumioxazin did not affect seed yield components, color, and physiological quality. Storage at 20 °C for six months affected seed physiological quality.

Resumo: Com a inserção de variedades de soja resistentes ao herbicida dicamba, surge a possibilidade de deriva deste herbicida em campos de produção e a ocorrência de redução na qualidade fisiológica das sementes. Objetivou-se avaliar a qualidade fisiológica das sementes de soja em função da aplicação de subdoses de dicamba em duas fases fenológicas. O delineamento foi em blocos casualizados, com quatro repetições. O esquema fatorial 4 x 2 + 1 composto por quatro doses (0,028, 0,28, 2,8 e 28 g.ha-1) de dicamba aplicados em V4 e R2 + testemunha. A qualidade fisiológica das sementes foi avaliada após a colheita e aos seis meses após armazenadas a 20 °C. Na dose de 28 g.ha-1 de dicamba aplicados em V4 e R2, as sementes apresentaram redução da germinação em 15 e 42%, respectivamente. Após o armazenamento, as sementes do tratamento com 28 g.ha-1 de dicamba apresentaram germinação 64% menor se comparado à menor dose avaliada e a condutividade elétrica duplicou em relação à testemunha. As sementes de soja têm sua qualidade fisiológica reduzida por subdoses de dicamba aplicadas nos estádios V4 e R2 tanto antes quanto após o armazenamento.

Abstract: The release of soybean varieties resistant to dicamba herbicide leads to the possibility of dicamba herbicide drift into soybean seed production fields and reduction in the physiological quality of soybean seeds. The aim of this study was to evaluate the physiological quality of soybean seeds as a function of the application of reduced rates of dicamba in two phenological phases. A randomized block experimental design was used, with four replications. The 4 × 2 + 1 factorial arrangement consisted of four reduced rates (0.028, 0.28, 2.8 and 28 g.ha-1) of dicamba applied in the V4 and R2 stages + a control. The physiological quality of the seeds was evaluated after harvest and at six months after storage at 20 °C. At the rate of 28 g.ha-1 of dicamba applied in the V4 and R2 stages, seed germination declined by 15% and 42%, respectively. After storage, seeds under the 28 g.ha-1 dicamba treatment had 64% lower germination compared to the lowest application rate evaluated, and electrical conductivity doubled in relation to the control. The physiological quality of soybean seeds declines under these reduced rates of dicamba applied in the V4 and R2 stages, both before and after storage.

ABSTRACT. Environment and storage time influence stored seed quality, especially for oilseeds such as castor beans because they have a high lipid content and are more prone to deterioration. This study evaluated the physiological quality of seeds from three castor bean genotypes stored at 10 and 20°C for 300 days. The experimental design was completely randomized, with 4 replications, in a 2 x 6 (2 temperatures x 6 storage periods) split-plot design. The seeds were placed in low-density polypropylene bags and stored in climatic chambers at 10 and 20°C, in which the temperature and relative humidity were registered. Physiological quality (germination, germination rate index, emergence, rate of emergence, electrical conductivity and accelerated aging) were evaluated at baseline and after 60, 120, 180, 240, and 300 days of storage. Castor seeds of genotype EVF 106 showed better physiological quality when stored at 10°C. Castor seeds of genotype EVF 701 could be stored at 10 and 20°C for 300 days. Castor seeds of genotype EVF 712 presented reduced physiological quality during their 300 days in storage, regardless of temperature.

Resumo: Sementes de mamona são a matéria-prima para extração de óleo utilizado para diversos fins farmacêuticos e industriais. Para assegurar a produção de sementes com qualidade, é necessário aplicar apropriadamente tecnologias de pós-colheita, como o beneficiamento. Assim, objetivou-se avaliar a qualidade fisiológica de sementes de dois genótipos de mamona, classificadas por massa específica e tamanho. Sementes de mamona dos genótipos EVF102 e EVF103 foram colhidas mecanicamente e classificadas por meio de peneiras de crivos cilíndricos e mesa densimétrica, na Unidade de Beneficiamento das Sementes Goiás Ltda. As avaliações da qualidade fisiológica foram conduzidas no Laboratório de Sementes do Instituto Federal Goiano, em um delineamento experimental inteiramente casualizado, com 4 repetições, em esquema fatorial 2 x 2 x 5 (2 genótipos x 2 tamanhos x 5 massas específicas). Foram avaliados os parâmetros massa de mil sementes, teste de germinação, índice de velocidade de germinação, teste de emergência, índice de velocidade de emergência, condutividade elétrica e envelhecimento acelerado. Sementes do genótipo EVF102 de tamanho 8 mm, conforme classificadas pela mesa densimétrica, apresentaram maior qualidade fisiológica considerando-se a germinação, índice de velocidade de germinação e emergência. Sementes do genótipo EVF103 separadas por tamanho não apresentaram diferença na qualidade fisiológica.

Abstract: Castor bean seeds are the raw material used for extracting oil destined to pharmaceutical and industrial ends. The appropriate application of post-harvest technologies, such as processing, is required to ensure the production of top quality seeds. Thus, this study aimed at assessing the physiological quality of seeds from two castor bean genotypes, classified according to their specific mass and size. Castor seeds of the genotypes EVF102 and EVF103 were mechanically harvested and then classified with the aid of cylindrical sieves and a densimetric table. This procedure was conducted at the processing unit of the company Sementes Goiás LTDA [Goiás Seeds Co.]. Evaluations of seed physiological quality were carried out in the Seed Laboratory of Instituto Federal Goiano, following a completely randomized design. The testing was conducted in four replicates, in a 2 x 2 x 5 factorial scheme (two genotypes x two sizes x five specific masses). The following parameters were appraised: (a) mass of one thousand seeds; (b) germination; (c) germination speed index; (d) emergence test; (e) emergence speed index; (f) electrical conductivity; and (g) accelerated aging. Genotype EVF102 seeds sized 8 mm, as classified by the densimetric table, showed the highest physiological quality, considering the germination, germination speed index, and emergence. Seeds of the genotype EVF103, sorted by size, exhibited no difference in physiological quality.

RESUMO Objetivou-se, neste trabalho, avaliar a qualidade de sementes de soja com elevado índice de danos mecânicos, provenientes de diferentes etapas do beneficiamento e armazenadas com e sem tratamento com fungicida. Foram efetuadas, ao longo do beneficiamento, coletas de amostras de sementes, nos seguintes pontos: moega, prélimpeza, secador, limpeza, espiral, classificador-peneira e densimétrica. O delineamento experimental adotado foi inteiramente casualizado, em esquema fatorial 9 x 2, sendo 9 pontos de coleta e dois tratamentos de sementes, em quatro repetições. As sementes foram avaliadas logo após o beneficiamento e aos seis meses de armazenamento. O beneficiamento melhora os atributos da qualidade de sementes de soja ao longo das diferentes etapas em que a máquina densimétrica desempenha papel importante no aprimoramento da qualidade fisiológica e sanitária do lote favorecendo o vigor das sementes. O tratamento das sementes com fungicidas carbendazim + thiram é eficiente no controle dos fungos de Cladosporium sp., Fusarium sp., Penicillium sp. e Aspergilus sp. antes e depois do armazenamento. O armazenamento de sementes de soja, com elevado índice de danos mecânicos, aumenta acentuadamente sua deterioração.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate the quality of soybean seeds with high level of mechanical damages from different processing stages and stored with and without fungicide treatment. Collections of seed samples were performed during the processing at the following points: hopper, pre-cleaning, dryer, cleaning, spiral, sieve-classifier and the gravity table. The experimental design was completely randomized in a 9 x 2 factorial scheme, with 9 collection points and two seed treatments, in four replicates. The seeds were then evaluated immediately after processing and after six months of storage. The processing progressively improved the attributes of soybean seed quality throughout the different stages in which the gravity table plays an important role in the improvement of the physiological and sanitary quality of the lot, favoring the storage potential and vigor of the seeds. The treatment of the seeds with fungicides is effective in controlling fungi before and after storage. The storage of soybean seeds with high level of mechanical damage markedly increases their deterioration.

RESUMO Objetivou-se, com este trabalho, determinar as isotermas de dessorção de aquênios de cajuzinho-do-cerrado (Anacardium humile St. Hil.) em diversas condições de temperatura e atividades de água e selecionar aquela que melhor representa o fenômeno e determinar o calor isostérico de dessorção. Os frutos foram coletados no Parque Nacional das Emas, no município de Mineiros - GO, despolpados e em seguida submetidos à secagem em sílica gel a temperatura de 25 ± 2 °C, até atingirem os teores de água de 17,6; 13,6; 11,1; 8,7; 5,3 (% b.s). Após a secagem foram determinadas as isotermas de dessorção pelo método estático indireto. A atividade de água (Aw) foi determinada sob diferentes temperaturas sendo os aquênios acondicionados em câmara B.O.D., regulada a 10, 20, 30 e 40 °C; aos dados de teor de água de equilíbrio foram ajustados a diferentes modelos matemáticos por meio da análise de regressão não linear, pelo método Gauss-Newton. O modelo Copace foi o que melhor representou a higroscopicidade dos aquênios de cajuzinho-do-cerrado enquanto os valores de calor isostérico integral de dessorção dos aquênios de cajuzinho-do-cerrado para a faixa de teor de água de 4,51 a 13,40 (% b.s.) variaram de 2734,82 a 2548,49 kJ kg-1.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to determine the desorption isotherms of 'cajuzinho-do-cerrado' achenes (Anacardium humile St. Hil.) in various conditions of temperature and water activity, as well as to select the one that best represents the phenomenon and to determine the isosteric heat of desorption. The fruits were collected at the Emas National Park, in the municipality of Mineiros-GO, Brazil, pulped and then subjected to drying in silica gel at temperature of 25 ± 2 °C until the moisture contents of 17.6, 13.6, 11.1, 8.7 and 5.3 (d.b.%). After drying, the desorption isotherms were determined by the indirect static method. The water activity (Aw) was determined at different temperatures, and the achenes were placed in a B.O.D. chamber, regulated at 10, 20, 30 and 40 °C. Data of hygroscopic equilibrium moisture content were fitted to different mathematical models through non-linear regression analysis, using the Gauss-Newton method. The Copace model was the one that best represented the hygroscopicity of 'cajuzinho-do-cerrado' achenes, while the integral isosteric heat of desorption of 'cajuzinho-do-cerrado' achenes for the moisture content range of 4.51 to 13.40 (% d.b.) varied from 2,734.82 to 2,548.49 kJ kg-1.

O armazenamento é uma etapa importante na produção de sementes de soja, principalmente em regiões tropicais, onde as temperaturas elevadas podem reduzir drasticamente a qualidade das sementes. A armazenagem em temperaturas mais amenas pode ser uma alternativa para melhor preservar a qualidade das sementes durante o armazenamento. O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar a qualidade fisiológica de sementes de soja resfriadas artificialmente por um processo dinâmico e armazenadas em ambiente sem controle da temperatura e umidade relativa do ar. Dois lotes de sementes das cultivares Monsoy 8757, TMG 115 RR e BRS Valiosa RR, foram utilizados. Após o beneficiamento, durante a operação de ensaque, as sementes foram resfriadas a 18 °C por processo dinâmico. Amostras de sementes foram coletadas após 0, 60 e 120 dias do armazenamento, sendo avaliados os parâmetros: germinação, envelhecimento acelerado, emergência de plântulas em areia, índice de velocidade de emergência, condutividade elétrica, tetrazólio e sanidade. Embora as sementes de soja resfriadas artificialmente pelo método dinâmico apresentem desempenho ligeiramente superior na manutenção da qualidade fisiológica durante o armazenamento sem refrigeração, para lotes de elevado desempenho fisiológico, vantagens relacionadas ao resfriamento das sementes não são observadas.

Storage is an important step in the production of soybean seeds, mainly in tropical regions, where high temperatures can drastically reduce seed quality. The storage at cooler temperatures may be a feasible alternative to preserve seed quality during storage. The objective of this study was to evaluate the physiological quality of soybean seeds artificially cooled by a dynamic process and stored in an environment, with non controlled temperature and relativity humidity. Two seed lots of cultivars Monsoy 8757, TMG 115 RR and BRS Valiosa RR were used. After processing and during packaging the seeds were cooled to 18 ºC by a dynamic process. Seed samples were collected after 0, 60 and 120 days of storage, using the following parameters germination, accelerated aging, seedling emergence in sand, speed of emergence index, electrical conductivity, tetrazolium and seed health. Although soybean seeds artificially cooled by the dynamic method may have slightly superior performance in maintaining physiological quality during storage in non-refrigerated warehouse, for lots of high physiological quality, these advantages are not observed.

O período de embebição é de grande importância para a padronização do teste de condutividade elétrica, pois influencia de forma direta os resultados do teste. O objetivo neste trabalho foi determinar a curva de embebição e a condutividade elétrica de sementes de mamona de diferentes tamanhos. Foram utilizadas sementes de quatro cultivares de mamona, IAC 80, IAC 226, BRS 188 Paraguaçu e Al Guarany 2002. As sementes foram colhidas de todos os racemos da planta e beneficiadas quanto ao peso e forma. Posteriormente, as sementes foram classificadas por tamanho em peneiras, conforme a cultivar. A curva de embebição e os valores de condutividade elétrica, para as sementes de mamona, foram obtidos pela pesagem e leitura sistemática de quatro repetições de 50 sementes em processo de embebição continuo. Sementes das cultivares de mamona IAC 80, BRS 188 Paraguaçu e Al Guarany 2002 de maior espessura e largura apresentam maior absorção de água, e isto pode aumentar a lixiviação de solutos durante a embebição. Nas sementes da cultivar de mamona IAC 226, o teor de água e a lixiviação de solutos de sementes com diferentes espessuras estão relacionados com a qualidade destas.

The soaking period is very important for standardizing the electrical conductivity test since it directly influences the test results. The objective of this study was to evaluate the curves of absorption and electrical conductivity for different-sized castor bean seeds. Seeds of four castor bean varieties, IAC 80, IAC 226, BRS 188 Paraguaçu and Al Guarany 2002, were studied. Seeds were collected from all racemes of the castor bean plants and classified by weight and shape. Subsequently, the seeds were classified by size using screens according to the cultivar. The curves of the absorption and electrical conductivity values were obtained by the weighing and systematic reading of four replications of 50 castor bean seeds until the end of the soaking process. Seeds of the IAC 80, BRS 188 Paraguaçu and Al Guarany 2002 cultivars with a greater thickness and width had a higher moisture content, and this may increase solute leaching during soaking. In the IAC 226 cultivar, the seed moisture content and solute leaching from seeds with different thicknesses is related to their quality.

O tamanho da semente, em muitas espécies, pode ser um indicativo de sua qualidade fisiológica. O objetivo neste trabalho foi avaliar o desempenho fisiológico de sementes de mamona classificadas por tamanho. O experimento foi conduzido no Laboratório de Pesquisa de Sementes do Departamento de Fitotecnia da Universidade Federal de Viçosa e foram utilizadas sementes de quatro cultivares de mamona, IAC 226, IAC 80, Al Guarany 2002 e BRS 188 Paraguaçu, oriundas de todos os racemos da planta. As sementes foram classificadas em três peneiras, segundo a cultivar e foram avaliadas por meio dos testes de primeira contagem de germinação, germinação final, envelhecimento acelerado, comprimento de plântula, sistema radicular e parte aérea, massa de matéria fresca e massa de matéria seca. Nas cultivares IAC 226 e BRS 188 Paraguaçu há tendência de as sementes menores apresentarem maior velocidade e porcentagem final de germinação, porém não para as cultivares IAC 80 e Al Guarany 2002.

Seed size in many species may be an indication of their physiological quality. The objective of this study was to evaluate the physiological performance of castor bean seeds sorted by size. The experiment was conducted at the Seed Research Laboratory of the Department of Plant Science at the Federal University of Viçosa. Seeds of four castor bean cultivars, IAC 226, IAC 80, Al Guarany 2002 and BRS 188 Paraguaçu were used. The seeds were harvested from all the plant racemes and classified into three different seed sizes for each cultivar. Tests were conducted to evaluate germination and vigor: germination at the 4th day, germination at the 7th day, accelerated ageing, seedling length of roots and shoots and fresh and dry weights of the seedlings. Based on the results for IAC 226 and BRS 188 Paraguaçu there is a tendency for smaller seeds to show higher speeds and final percentage of germination but this was not the case for the IAC and 80 Al Guarany 2002.

Diversos fatores, como a época de semeadura, afetam a produtividade e a qualidade das sementes. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar quatro componentes do rendimento de mamona em função da época de semeadura e da ordem floral na Embrapa Clima Temperado em Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul em solo tipo Argissolo Amarelo na latitude de 31º40'53,6" S, longitude de 52º26'23,5" W e altitude de 67,10 metros. O número de cachos emitidos, produtividade de sementes, percentagem de casca e peso de mil sementes foram avaliados para as cultivares Al Guarany 2002, IAC 80, IAC 226 e BRS 188 Paraguaçu. A maior emissão de cachos de mamona não implica, necessariamente, em maior produtividade de sementes, a qual variou entre época de semeadura e ordem floral.

Several factors, including sowing time, can affect the productivity and the quality of seeds. The objective of this work was to evaluate four components of the castor oil plant production as function of the sowing time and of the floral order in the "Embrapa Clima Temperado" in Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil in yellow clay soil type at the latitude of 31º40'53.6" S, longitude of 52º26'23.5" W and altitude of 67.10 meters. The number of bunches emitted, productivity of seeds, peel percentage and weight of a thousand seeds were evaluated for the cultivars Al Guarany 2002, IAC 80, IAC 226 and BRS 188 Paraguaçu. The largest emission of bunches on castor oil plant does not lead, necessarily, to higher productivity of seeds, which varied between sowing time and floral order.

A definição da época de semeadura é importante para culturas agrícolas de sequeiro. Em regiões tropicais há uma relação direta entre época de semeadura e desempenho do cultivo de mamona. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a qualidade e o tamanho de sementes de mamona em função da época de semeadura e ordem floral. O experimento foi conduzido na Embrapa Clima Temperado em Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul. Os materiais foram semeados em duas épocas: a primeira em novembro (entre os dias um e cinco) e a segunda em dezembro (entre os dias um e cinco). Cada época teve 12 unidades experimentais em três blocos casualizados e o experimento constou de 72 parcelas, considerando-se as quatro cultivares, duas épocas de semeadura, três ordens florais e três repetições (4 x 2 x 3 x 3). A época de semeadura e a ordem floral influenciaram tanto a qualidade como o tamanho das sementes de mamona. A primeira época de semeadura proporcionou produção de sementes de melhor qualidade para as cultivares IAC 226, Al Guarany 2002 e BRS 188 Paraguaçu, enquanto a segunda época foi melhor para a IAC 80.

The definition of sowing time is important for agricultural crops because it presents direct relationship with performance of these plants. The purpose of this study was to evaluate size and quality of castor seeds as function of sowing time and floral order, in the "EMBRAPA Clima Temperado" in Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil. The materials were seeded in two times: the first in November (between days one and five) and the second in December (between days one and five). Each sowing time had 12 units in a block randomized design with three blocks and 72 parcels, considering four cultivars, two periods of sowing, three floral orders and three replications (4 x 2 x 3 x 3). The time of sowing and the floral order influenced the quality and size of castor beans. The period of sowing allowed the production of seeds of better quality of the cultivars IAC Al Guarana 2002 and BRS 188 Paraguay while the second was better for the IAC 80.

A mamona (Ricinus communis L.) é uma planta oleaginosa anual e, ocasionalmente, bienal em regiões tropicais, com ciclo médio de 150 dias para a maioria das cultivares anuais e de 120 a 130 dias para cultivares anuais precoces. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar características agronômicas de cultivares das mamonas 'Al Guarany 2002', 'IAC 80', 'IAC 226' e 'BRS 188 Paraguaçu'em função do ambiente de cultivo e da época de semeadura. As cultivares foram semeadas entre o primeiro e o quinto dia dos meses de novembro e dezembro, na Embrapa Clima Temperado, em Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul. Cada época teve 12 unidades experimentais em três blocos casualizados. A emergência, a altura de planta e de inserção do primeiro cacho, o período de florescimento e colheita e o ataque de pragas e doenças foram avaliados e analisados com o programa WinStat Versão 2.0. O comportamento entre as cultivares diferiu entre locais de cultivo e época de semeadura. A inserção do cacho foi mais alta, e as florações e colheitas foram mais tardias em plantas da segunda época de semeadura. Danos por pragas e doenças e os descritores morfológicos da planta de mamona apresentaram diferenças entre os locais de cultivo.

Castor bean (Ricinus communis L.) is an oleaginous plant with annual cycle and occasionally biennial cycle in tropical areas, with mean cycle of 150 days for the majority of annual cultivars and 120 to 130 days for annual early cultivars. The objective of this study was to evaluate the agronomic characteristics of castor cultivars according to environmental crop and sowing season. The experiment was conduced at Embrapa Clima Temperado - Pelotas/RS, in two places. The castor cultivars used in this research were 'Al Guarany 2002', 'IAC 80', 'IAC 226' and 'BRS 188 Paraguaçu', which were sown in two sowing times: the first was in early November (between 1st and 5st) and the second was in early December (between 1st and 5st). Each sowing season was constituted of 12 experimental units, distributed in three random blocks. It was evaluated the emergency, plant height and first spike insertion , flowering and harvest time, pest and disease attacks. The WinStat program Version 2.0 was used for data statistical analysis. There was a significant difference among cultivar behaviors between the environmental crops and sowing seasons. The second sowing season provided a larger plant and first spike insertion was higher. It also promoted retardation in the flowering and harvesting time. The differences among cultivars, between the two environmental crops, were clearer in the pest and disease attacks, but also in morphologic characteristics of castor plant.
