Resumo O bicudo-do-algodoeiro, Anthonomus grandis grandis Boheman (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), é uma praga-chave da cultura do algodão no Brasil. Fatores climáticos adversos, como altas temperaturas e baixa umidade do solo, desidratam os botões florais de algodão ovipositados caídos ao solo e causam alta mortalidade de seus descendentes dentro dessas estruturas vegetais.O objetivo desta pesquisa foi avaliar a mortalidade do bicudo-do-algodoeiro em lavouras de algodão irrigadas por gotejamento e aspersão. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos casualizados com dois tratamentos: cultivo de algodão irrigado por gotejamento (T1) e aspersão (T2, testemunha) com dezesseis repetições. Cada parcela possuía uma gaiola de emergência, instalada entre duas fileiras de algodão por sistema de irrigação, com 37 botões florais de algodão com orifícios de oviposição, brácteas abertas e amarelecidas, para captura do bicudo adulto. O número médio de bicudos que emergiu dos botões florais de algodão e as causas de mortalidade, em diferentes estágios de desenvolvimento, foram determinados por tratamento. As tabelas de vida de terceira geração do bicudo-do-algodoeiro foram preparadas usando os dados de mortalidade natural em tratamentos de irrigação por gotejamento e aspersão e as taxas de mortalidade reais, aparentes e indispensáveis e a letalidade de cada causa de mortalidade. Concluímos que a aplicação de água diretamente na zona radicular das plantas de forma direcionada, utilizando o sistema de irrigação por gotejamento, pode causar altas mortalidade dos estágios imaturos do bicudo-do-algodoeiro nos botões florais de algodão caídos no solo. Isso ocorre porque os botões florais de algodão caídos no solo mais seco e mais quente entre as fileiras do algodão irrigado por gotejamento desidratam, causando a morte dos bicudos. Isso é importante por poder reduzir a densidade populacional desse inseto e, consequentemente, o número de aplicações de inseticidas químicos para seu controle. Assim, contribuindo para aumentar a viabilidade da produção de algodão, principalmente em áreas do semiárido brasileiro em sistema orgânico.

Abstract The cotton boll weevil, Anthonomus grandis grandis Boheman (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), is a key cotton crop pest in Brazil. Adverse climatic factors, such as high temperatures and low soil moisture, dehydrate oviposited cotton squares (bud flowers) on the ground and cause high mortality of its offspring within these plant structures. The objective of this research was to evaluate the mortality of the cotton boll weevil in drip and sprinkler irrigated cotton crops. The experimental design was in randomized blocks with two treatments: drip (T1) and sprinkler (T2, control) irrigated cotton crops with sixteen replications. Each parcel had one emergence cage, installed between two cotton rows per irrigation system, with 37 cotton squares with opened oviposition punctures and yellowish bracts, to capture adult cotton boll weevils. The average number of boll weevils that emerged from the cotton squares and the causes of mortality at different development stages were determined per treatment. Third-generation life tables of the boll weevil were prepared using the natural mortality data in drip and sprinkler irrigation treatments and plus actual, apparent and indispensable mortality rates and the lethality of each mortality cause. We conclude that the application of water directly to the root zone of the plants in a targeted manner, using the drip irrigation system, can cause high mortality of the cotton boll weevil immature stages inside cotton squares fallen on the ground. This is because the cotton squares fallen on the drier and hotter soil between the rows of drip-irrigated cotton dehydrates causing the boll weevils to die. This is important because it can reduce its population density of the pest and, consequently, the number of applications of chemical insecticides for its control. Thus, contributing to increase the viability of cotton production, mainly in areas of the Brazilian semiarid region where the cotton is cultivated in organic system.

A densidade de parasitoides por hospedeiro influencia nas suas principais características biológicas. Assim, o objetivo desse trabalho foi avaliar o desenvolvimento do parasitoide Palmistichus elaeisis Delvare & LaSalle, 1993 (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) em pupas de Anticarsia gemmatalis Hübner, 1818 (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) expostas nas densidades de 1:1, 2:1, 4:1, 6:1, 8:1, 10:1 ou 12:1 parasitoides/hospedeiro, respectivamente. Os parasitoides permaneceram em contato com as pupas por 24 horas em tubos de vidro (14,0 x 2,2 cm), acondicionadas em câmara climatizada a 25 ± 1º C, 70 ± 10% de UR e fotofase de 14 horas. Observou-se 54,54 e 90,90% de pupas parasitadas nas densidades de 1:1 e 2:1, respectivamente, e 100,00% nas demais densidades com melhor índice de emergência (72,72%) na densidade 6:1. A duração do ciclo de vida (ovo-adulto) decresceu com o aumento da densidade de fêmeas e variou de 20 a 22 dias. A progênie variou de 16 a 225 descendentes por pupa, com melhor resultado na densidade 8:1. A razão sexual do parasitoide variou de 0,95 ± 0,00 a 0,97 ± 0,01, sem diferença significativa e o comprimento do corpo de fêmeas e de machos variou de 1,95 ± 0,02 a 2,22 ± 0,03 mm e de 1,49 ± 0,02 a 1,87 ± 0,01 mm, respectivamente. Seis a oito fêmeas de P. elaeisis por pupa de A. gemmatalis proporcionam maior emergência e progênie do parasitoide, viabilizando sua criação massal.

The density of parasitoids per host affects their biological characteristics. The present study aimed to evaluate the development of Palmistichus elaeisis Delvare & LaSalle, 1993 (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) in Anticarsia gemmatalis Hübner, 1818 (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) pupae exposed to 1:1, 2:1, 4:1, 6:1, 8:1, 10:1 or 12:1 females/ host, respectively. The parasitoid remained in contact with pupae for 24 h in glass tubes (14.0 x 2.2 cm), packed in a climate controlled chamber regulated at 25 ± 1ºC, 70 ± 10% relative humidity and photophase of 14 hours. We observed 54.54 and 90.90% of pupae parasitized at densities of 1:1 and 2:1, respectively, and 100.00% in the other densities with a better emergence index (72.72%) at a density of 6:1. The duration of the (egg-adult) life cycle decreased with increasing density of females and varied from 20 to 22 days. The offspring varied from 16 to 225 descendants per A. gemmatalis pupae with best results at the density 8:1. The sex ratio of the parasitoid varied from 0.95 ± 0.00 to 0.97 ± 0.01 without significant differences, and the body length of females and of males varied from 1.95 ± 0.02 to 2.22 ± 0.03 mm and 1.49 ± 0.02 to 1.87 ± 0.01 mm, respectively. Six to eight of P. elaeisis females per A. gemmatalis pupae provide more emergence and offspring of the parasitoid, allowing for its mass rearing.

Larvas de Chrysoperla externa (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae) podem evitar o forrageamento sobre plantas de Crotalaria juncea (Fabaceae) após a emissão de botões florais, quando presas de Utetheisa ornatrix (Lepidoptera: Arctiidae) incorporam alcalóides pirrolizidínicos tóxicos dessa planta. Isso reduz a predação e favorece o aumento do número de adultos e ovos desse desfolhador sobre cultivos dessa planta. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar alguns aspectos biológicos e ecológicos de C. externa e U. ornatrix sobre cultivo orgânico de C. juncea na EMBRAPA Milho e Sorgo, em Sete Lagoas, Minas Gerais, Brasil. Chrysoperla externa e U. ornatrix foram mais abundantes nos estádios vegetativo e de florescimento de C. juncea, respectivamente, com lagartas desse desfolhador se alimentando sobre folhas e sementes dessa planta. A duração dos estágios/estádios, sobrevivência, fecundidade de vida e oviposição mostraram que ramos de C. juncea é um alimento adequado para U. ornatrix. A abundância de adultos e larvas de C. externa foi menor nas fases de floração e vagens de C. juncea, respectivamente, quando posturas de U. ornatrix estiveram presentes, provavelmente devido à toxicidade de ovos dessa presa a esse predador. Durante esses estádios, C. externa pode ser criado com hospedeiros alternativos, e, quando cultivos de C. juncea são escassos, uma dieta artificial deve ser usada para criação desse desfolhador em laboratório, para pesquisas biológicas e desenvolvimento de táticas de controle biológico.

Chrysoperla externa (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae) larvae can avoid foraging on plants of Crotalaria juncea (Fabaceae) after the issuance of floral buds, when the prey of Utetheisa ornatrix (Lepidoptera: Arctiidae) incorporate toxic pyrrolizidine alkaloids from this plant. This reduces the predation and favors increasing the number of adults and eggs of this defoliator on crops of this plant. The aim of the present paper was to evaluate some biological and ecological aspects of C. externa and U. ornatrix on the organic crop of C. juncea in the EMBRAPA Maize and Sorghum in Sete Lagoas, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. Chrysoperla externa and U. ornatrix were more abundant in the vegetative and flowering stages of C. juncea, respectively, with caterpillars of this defoliator feeding on leaves and seeds of this plant. The duration of the stages/instars, survival, lifetime fecundity, and oviposition showed that the branches of C. juncea are a suitable food for U. ornatrix. The abundance of adults and larvae of C. externa was lower in the flowering and pods stages of C. juncea, respectively, when the postures of U. ornatrix are present, probably due to the toxicity of the eggs of this prey to this predator. During these stages, C. externa may be reared with alternative hosts, and when the crops of C. juncea are scarce, an artificial diet should be used for rearing this defoliator in the laboratory for biological research and the development of biological control tactics.

RESUMO Trichogramma spp. (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) parasitam ovos de Anticarsia gemmatalis (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), o principal desfolhador de soja no Brasil. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o parasitismo de onze espécies/linhagens de Trichogramma em cartelas de cartolina com vinte ovos de A. gemmatalis por fêmea desse parasitoide durante 24 horas. A linhagem de Trichogramma atopovirilia (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) de Sete Lagoas, Minas Gerais, apresentou melhor desempenho com 19 ovos de A. gemmatalis parasitados por fêmea em 24 horas, viabilidade de 98% e razão sexual de 0,84. A linhagem de Trichogramma pretiosum de Cristalina, Goiás, parasitou 11,9 ovos de A. gemmatalis por fêmea com 98% de viabilidade e razão sexual de 0,65. Esse trabalho confirma a importância de se avaliar linhagens de Trichogramma antes de programas de controle biológico, pois diferentes linhagens de uma mesma espécie desse parasitoide apresentam resultados distintos.

ABSTRACT Several Trichogramma (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) species parasitize Anticarsia gemmatalis (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) eggs, the major soybean desfoliator in Brazil. The objective of this work was to evaluate the parasitism of eleven Trichogramma species/strains in cardboards with twenty eggs of A. gemmatalis by this parasitoid female for 24 hours. The strain trat - 2 Trichogramma atopovirilia (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) of Sete Lagoas, Minas Gerais, showed better performance with 19 A. gemmatalis eggs parasitized by female in 24 hours, 98% viability and sex ratio of 0.84. The strain Trichogramma pretiosum of Crystalline, Goiás, parasitized 11.9 A. gemmatalis eggs per female with 98% viability and sex ratio of 0.65. This work confirms the importance of evaluating Trichogramma strains before biological control programs, because different strains of the same species of parasitoid have distinct results.

RESUMO Predadores generalistas são importantes para o controle biológico de pragas por se alimentarem de muitas espécies de insetos, especialmente daquelas em maior abundância, e por se manterem em diferentes agroecossistemas, mesmo em períodos de escassez de presa, tendo sido registrados em surtos de Lepidoptera desfolhadores em plantações de eucalipto. Foram estudados a longevidade e os parâmetros reprodutivos do predador Brontocoris tabidus (Signoret) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) a 26 ± 2° C, 65 ± 10% de U.R. e fotofase de 12 horas, alimentado com Tenebrio molitor L. (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) (T1) ou com esta presa e mudas de Eucalyptus grandis (T2). A longevidade de machos e fêmeas foi de 27,4 ± 4,4 e 39,6 ± 3,4 dias e de 27,0 ± 4,6 e 34,5 ± 3,1 dias, respectivamente. As fêmeas foram sempre mais pesadas que os machos, com 141,1 e 104,9 mg apenas com T. molitor, e 148,8 e 108,3mg com essa presa e mudas de E. grandis, respectivamente. A viabilidade dos ovos, o número de ovos/fêmea e a longevidade de B. tabidus foram maiores no tratamento com essa presa e mudas de E. grandis.

ABSTRACT Generalist predators are important for the biological control of pests by feeding on many insect pests, especially those occurring in larger abundance. For this reason, they can maintain their populations in different ecosystems, even during periods of prey shortage, and they are found in outbreaks of Lepidoptera defoliators in eucalyptus plantations. The longevity and reproductive parameters of the predatorBrontocoris tabidus (Signoret) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) were studied at 26 ± 2° C, 65 ± 10% relative humidity and 12 hours photophase with Tenebrio molitor L. (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) (T1) pupae or with this prey and seedlings of Eucalyptus grandis (T2). The longevity of males and females of this predator were 27.4 ± 4.4 and 39.6 ± 3.4 days and 27.0 ± 4.6 and 34.5 ± 3.1 days, respectively. Females were always heavier than males, with 141.1 and 104.9 mg only with T. molitor and 148.8 and 108.3 mg with this prey and E. grandis seedlings, respectively. The viability and number of eggs/female and the longevity of B. tabidus had higher values in the treatment with T. molitor pupae and seedlings of E. grandis.
