Abstract This study aimed to evaluate the reproductive performance of sows submitted to single fixed-time insemination (SFTAI) using boars according to capacity for liquid in vitro semen preservation, type of extender, and storage time. Boars (n = 12) were classified into two groups based on progressive motility (PM) at 120 h of semen storage: low (PM - 64.5%) - and high-preservation (PM - 83.9%) capacity for semen storage. Weaned sows (n = 397, parity - 1 to 7) were inseminated (1.5×109 sperm cells) in a factorial design: two classes of boars (low- or high-preservation), two types of extenders (short- or long-term), and two semen storage times at insemination (24 or 72 h). An adapted triptorelin acetate protocol was used for SFTAI. Total sperm motility (TM) and PM at insemination were greater in high-preservation boars at 72 h compared with low-preservation boars at 24 or 72 h (P < 0.01). Short- or long-term extender did not affect (P ≥ 0.68) TM and PM in high-preservation boars; however, long-term extender improved these parameters in low-preservation boars (P < 0.01). Pregnancy and farrowing rates were not affected by groups (P > 0.05). Total piglets born (TPB) was reduced (P = 0.05) in low-preservation boars with 72 h of storage (13.6 ± 0.5) compared to high-preservation boars with semen stored for 24 or 72 h (15.2 ± 0.5 and 15.5 ± 0.5, respectively). The low-preservation boars reduced the TPB in sows submitted to SFTAI, and this reduction was greater using semen stored for 72 h.

Abstract This study aimed to evaluate the reproductive performance of sows inseminated with semen doses preserved at 15-18 °C for up to seven days in long-term extender (Duragen®). Parity one (PO1) to PO7 sows were randomly assigned to the following groups: AI1-3 (n=190), insemination with semen doses stored between one and three days; and AI5-7 (n=124), insemination with semen doses stored between five and seven days. Sows were submitted to estrus detection twice a day. Post-cervical insemination according to weaning-to-estrus interval was performed. The farrowing rate (FR) did not differ between the groups (AI1-3=83.2%; AI5-7=82.2%; p>0.05) nor did the total number of piglets born (TPB; AI1-3=14.2±0.3; AI5-7=14.5±0.3; p>0.05). Considering the semen dose most likely responsible for fertilization according to its storage time (1, 2-3, 5, and 6-7 days), the FR (72.7%, 87.8%, 85.7%, and 79%, respectively) and TPB (14.4, 14.0, 14.9, and 13.5, respectively) were similar among the groups (p>0.05). In conclusion, the use of semen doses extended with long-term extender stored for up to seven days did not impair the reproductive performance of sows. Therefore, it’s using could optimize production efficiency and logistics of semen dose deliveries to sow farms.

RESUMO: O estudo teve o objetivo de avaliar o efeito da suplementação de arginina na dieta de lactação de porcas sobre a composição do leite, desempenho da leitegada e sobrevivência dos leitões. Foram utilizadas 64 porcas lactantes Landrace - Large White, com parição de 1 a 7, aleatoriamente distribuídas em dois tratamentos: 1) Controle - dieta a base de milho e soja com 1,10% de lisina digestível e 3.475kcal de energia metabolizável; e 2) Arginina - dieta controle suplementada com arginina via top-dress em nível de 1% sobre a dieta fornecida. Diariamente, as matrizes receberam 5,0 e 7,5kg do D0 ao D7 e D8 ao D21, respectivamente. Após a uniformização das leitegadas, o número médio de lactentes foi de 12,8 leitões. As leitegadas foram pesadas no D1, D10 e D21 da lactação e a mortalidade pré-desmame foi registrada. Foram coletadas amostras de leite (60mL) de todas as tetas funcionais de cada porca no D10 e no D20 da lactação. Não houve efeito (P>0,05) da suplementação de arginina sobre o peso dos leitões, peso da leitegada e ganho de peso médio diário dos leitões no D10 e D21 da lactação. A interação entre dia da pesagem e tratamento não foi significativa (P>0,05) para as variáveis-resposta analisadas. Os percentuais de leitões vivos até o D10 e D21 foram de 90,3% e 88,3%, respectivamente, sem diferença (P>0,05) entre os tratamentos. Não houve efeito (P>0,05) do dia de lactação (D10 ou D20), tratamento ou interação entre eles na proteína bruta e conteúdo de aminoácidos do leite. A suplementação de arginina em nível de 1% da dieta fornecida diariamente não teve efeito sobre o desempenho e sobrevivência da leitegada e não influenciou no conteúdo de aminoácidos ou na relação arginina:lisina do leite.

ABSTRACT: The study aimed to evaluate the effects of arginine supplementation in the lactation diet of sows on their milk composition, litter performance and piglet survival. Sixty-four lactating Landrace x Large White sows, parity 1 to 7, were randomly assigned to two treatments: 1) Control - a corn/soybean meal based diet with 1.10% standardized ileal digestible (SID) lysine and 3,475kcal of metabolizable energy (ME) kg-1, and 2) arginine - the control diet top-dressed daily with arginine at 1% of feed allowance. The daily feed allowance per sow was 5.0 and 7.5kg from day (D)0 to D7 and D8 to D21, respectively. The average litter size was 12.8 piglets after cross-fostering. Litters were weighed on D1, D10, and D21 of lactation and pre-weaning mortality was recorded. Samples of milk (60mL) were collected from all functional teats at D10 and D20 of lactation. There were no effects (P>0.05) of arginine supplementation on piglet weight, litter weight, and average daily gain of piglets at D10 and D21 of lactation. The interaction between weight day and treatment was not significant (P>0.05) for any of these response variables. The percentages of piglets that survived until D10 and D21 were 90.3% and 88.3%, respectively, with no difference (P>0.05) between treatments. There were no effects (P>0.05) of the lactation day (D10 or D20), treatment or the interaction between them on crude protein and amino acid content in milk. Top-dressing arginine at 1% of feed allowance of the lactation diet of sows does not affect litter performance and survival and does not influence the amino acid content or arginine: lysine ratio of milk.

O objetivo do estudo foi avaliar a influência de diferentes sistemas de controle de temperatura sobre o consumo voluntário de ração (VFI), porcentagem de peso perdido (PWL) e desempenho de fêmeas lactantes e de suas leitegadas. Dois sistemas foram utilizados no estudo: o sistema tradicional de controle de temperatura (TTCS), com manejo de cortina e o sistema de resfriamento adiabático evaporativo (ESCS). O estudo foi realizado no verão de 2011. Após o parto e ao desmame, 241 fêmeas foram pesadas e foi avaliado o PWL durante a lactação. Fêmeas TTCS perderam mais peso (5,3±0,9%; P<0,05) do que as fêmeas ESCS (2,2±0,9%). VFI foi medido em intervalos de quatro dias em 32 fêmeas primíparas e 39 multíparas. Fêmeas ESCS tiveram maior VFI (5,8±0,2kg-1 dia; P<0,05) do que fêmeas TTCS (4,8±0,2 kg dia-1). Primíparas (4,4±0,2kg dia-1) tiveram menor VFI do que multíparas (6,3±0,2 kg dia-1, P<0,05), independentemente do sistema de controle de temperatura utilizado. Primíparas do TTCS (10,9±1,3 dias) tiveram maior intervalo desmame-estro do que primíparas do ESCS (7,0±1,2 dias, P<0,05). O tamanho da leitegada do parto subsequente tendeu a ser maior (P=0,095) no grupo alojado no ESCS do que no TTCS (12,0±0,5 e 10,9±0,6 leitões nascidos, respectivamente). Leitegadas alojadas no ESCS foram mais pesadas (65,3±1,4kg; P<0,05) ao desmame do que no TTCS (60,7±1,4kg). Os resultados observados sugerem que fêmeas e leitões alojados no ESCS apresentam melhor desempenho do que fêmeas e leitões alojados no TTCS.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the influence of different temperature control systems on the voluntary feed intake (VFI), percentage of weight loss (PWL) and performance of lactating sows as well as on the weight of their piglets. Two systems were used: traditional temperature control system (TTCS) with curtain management and an evaporative snout cooling system (ESCS). The study was performed during the summer of 2011. After farrowing and at the weaning, 241 sows were weighed to evaluate the PWL during lactation. TTCS sows lost more weight (5.3±0.9%; P<0.05) than ESCS sows (2.2±0.9%). VFI was measured at intervals of four days in 32 primiparous and 39 multiparous sows. ESCS sows had higher VFI (5.8±0.2kg day-1; P<0.05) than TTCS sows (4.8±0.2kg day-1). Primiparous sows (4.4±0.2kg day-1) had a lower VFI than multiparous sows (6.3±0.2kg day-1, P<0.05) regardless of the temperature control system. Primiparous sows in the TTCS (10.9±1.3 days) had a longer weaning-to-oestrus interval than primiparous sows in the ESCS (7.0±1.2 days, P<0.05). Subsequent litter size tended to be higher (P=0.095) in ESCS than in TTCS (12.0±0.5 and 10.9±0.6 piglets born, respectively). Litters housed in ESCS were heavier (65.3±1.4kg; P<0.05) at weaning than litters in TTCS (60.7±1.4kg). The results suggest that in general sows and piglets housed in the ESCS have better performance than sows and piglets housed in TTCS.

Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar o uso do hormônio luteizante suíno (pLH) aplicado no início do estro em leitoas para sincronização da ovulação. Um total de 120 leitoas (40/tratamento) foram distribuídas em três tratamentos: controle - aplicação de placebo por via intramuscular (i.m.) no início do estro; pLH2,5 - aplicação de 2,5mg de pLH por via i.m. no início do estro; pLH5 - aplicação de 5mg de pLH por via i.m. no início do estro. Em média, o intervalo início do estro e a ovulação não diferiu (P>0,05) entre os tratamentos (controle - 28,7±1,6 h; pLH2,5 - 28,2±1,6h; pLH5 - 27,5±1,6h). A distribuição de frequência de leitoas ovuladas em diferentes momentos após a detecção de estro não foi afetada pelos tratamentos (P>0,05). Assim, o uso de 2,5mg ou 5mg de pLH aplicado no início do estro por via i.m. em leitoas não antecipa nem sincroniza o intervalo início do estro e a ovulação.

This study aimed to evaluate the use of porcine luteinising hormone (pLH) given at oestrus onset in gilts to synchronise ovulation. A total of 120 gilts (40/treatment) were assigned in three treatments: control - application of placebo by intramuscular (i.m.) route at oestrus onset; pLH2.5 - application of 2.5mg of pLH by i.m. route at oestrus onset; pLH5 - application of 5mg of pLH by i.m. route at oestrus onset. On average, the interval onset of oestrus to ovulation did not differ (P>0.05) among treatments (control - 28.7±1.6h; pLH2.5 - 28.2±1.6h; pLH5 - 27.5±1.6h). The frequency distribution of gilts ovulated in different moments after oestrus detection was not affected (P>0.05) by the treatment. In conclusion, the use of 2.5mg or 5mg of pLH given at oestrus onset in gilts by i.m. route does not advance and synchronises the interval onset of oestrus to ovulation.

As exigências de lisina durante a gestação, para o ganho de reservas corporais maternas e peso ao nascer dos leitões, não estão bem estabelecidas nos genótipos contemporâneos prolíficos. Este estudo objetivou avaliar o efeito da suplementação de lisina no terço final da gestação, sobre o peso ao nascer dos leitões e o desempenho gestacional e lactacional de leitoas. Leitoas prenhes foram uniformemente distribuídas em dois grupos que receberam, dos 85 aos 110 dias de gestação, diferentes níveis de lisina na dieta: Grupo Controle - 28g lisina/dia (n=136), e Grupo Lisina - 35g lisina/dia (n=141). Não houve efeito (P>0,10) da suplementação de lisina no ganho de peso e espessura de toucinho (ET) das fêmeas e no peso dos leitões ao nascer. Leitoas suplementadas com lisina tenderam a ter menor percentagem de natimortos (P=0,077), menor variação de peso dentro da leitegada (P= 0,094) e menor percentagem de leitões pesando menos que 1100g (P=0,082), em comparação ao grupo controle. Durante a lactação, o desempenho das fêmeas e das leitegadas foi avaliado em um subgrupo de fêmeas (n=26/grupo). Não houve diferença entre os grupos Controle e Lisina (P>0,10) no consumo voluntário de ração, perdas de reservas corporais (peso e ET), intervalo desmame-estro das fêmeas e peso da leitegada ao desmame. Em conclusão, um incremento de lisina (de 28 para 35g dia-1) no terço final da gestação de leitoas (85 até 110 dias) tende a reduzir o número de natimortos e aumentar a uniformidade do peso dos leitões ao nascer, mas não afeta o desempenho das fêmeas até o parto ou na fase lactacional subsequente.

Lysine requirements for gain in maternal body reserves and piglet birth weight, during pregnancy, in contemporary prolific genotypes, are not well established. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of dietary lysine in late pregnancy on piglet birth weight, and on the gestational and lactational performance of gilts. Pregnant gilts were uniformly distributed into two groups and received, from 85 to 110 days of gestation, either of two lysine levels in their diet: Control group - 28g lysine/day (n=136), and Lysine group - 35g lysine/day (n=141). There were no effects (P>0.10) of supplemental lysine on body weight and backfat (BF) gain of females or on piglet birth weight. Gilts supplemented with lysine tended to have a lower percentage of stillbirths (P=0.077), reduced within-litter birth weight variation (P=0.094) and a lower percentage of piglets weighing less than 1100g (P=0.082) than in the Control group. During lactation, the performance of sows and litters was also evaluated in a subgroup of sows (n=26/group). There were no differences between the Control and Lysine groups (P>0.10) in voluntary feed intake, body reserve losses (weight and BF), weaning-to-estrus interval of the sows, and litter weaning weight. In conclusion, an increase in lysine (from 28 to 35g/day) in late gestation of gilts (85 to 110 days) tends to reduce the rate of stillbirths and to improve the uniformity of litter weight at birth, but does not affect the performance of females until farrowing or during subsequent lactation.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi determinar o efeito do método de exposição ao macho e da idade da leitoa, por ocasião da exposição, sobre o percentual de manifestação do primeiro estro, idade de início da puberdade e intervalo entre estímulo e puberdade. Leitoas Danbred F1 Landrace x Large White foram induzidas à puberdade com dois sistemas de exposição ao macho - Baia, estímulo feito pela introdução de macho na baia das fêmeas; Bear, estímulo feito pela colocação de fêmeas na área de permanência de machos - , em três idades de início do estímulo - 150, 170 e 200 dias. Não houve diferença entre os sistemas de estimulação quanto à percentagem de leitoas em estro, idade à puberdade e intervalo entre estimulação e puberdade. Esse intervalo foi menor, quando a exposição das fêmeas foi feita aos 200 dias de idade, e a proporção de fêmeas que atingiram a puberdade aos 10, 20, 30 e 42 dias após o início da exposição foi maior. A indução da puberdade tem maior sucesso quando a exposição da fêmea ao macho é feita aos 200 dias de idade, independentemente do sistema de estimulação.

The objective of this work was to determine the effect of boar-exposure method and of gilt age at exposure on the percentage of first estrus manifestation, puberty age, and interval between stimulus and puberty. Danbred F1 Landrace x Large White gilts were induced to puberty with two different systems of boar exposure - Baia, stimuli done by putting a male inside the pens of gilts; Bear, stimuli done by putting the females in an area with males - , and three ages at the beginning of stimulation - 150, 170 and 200 days. There was no difference between the stimulation systems for the percentage of gilts in estrus, puberty age, and the interval between stimulation and estrus onset. This interval was lower when stimulus started at 200 days, and the proportion of gilts which reached puberty at 10, 20, 30 and 42 days after the beginning of boar-exposure was higher. Puberty induction has higher success when the female exposure to the male is done at 200 days, regardless of the boar-exposure system.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a associação do comportamento de fêmeas suínas mantidas em baias coletivas, durante a alimentação, com o ganho de peso no último mês de gestação, e determinar se a uniformidade de peso das leitegadas é influenciada pelo ganho de peso das fêmeas. As fêmeas (n = 699) foram separadas em três grupos de ordem de parto (OP): 2, 3-5 e 6-9. Cada grupo de OP foi dividido em três subgrupos com percentual de ganho de peso: baixo, médio e alto. Fêmeas de OP 6-9 tiveram mais leitões com peso menor que 1.200 g e maior coeficiente de variação desse peso, em comparação às de OP 2. O menor peso de leitões e o maior número de leitões com peso<1.200 g foram observados no subgrupo de peso baixo. Houve correlação do percentual de ganho de peso na gestação com o número de vezes que a fêmea esteve em pé no cocho (r = 0,669) e com o número de vezes que a fêmea agrediu outras fêmeas (r = 0,451). A variação do ganho de peso das fêmeas, durante o último mês de gestação, em baias coletivas é influenciada pela competição durante a alimentação, e o menor ganho de peso no último mês de gestação reduz o peso dos leitões ao nascimento.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the association between the behavior of group-housed sows during feeding time, with weight gain during the last month of gestation and to determine if piglet birth weight uniformity is influenced by sow weight gain. Sows (n = 699) were separated into three parity groups (P): 2, 3-5, and 6-9. Each parity group was divided in three subgroups according to the percentage of weight gain: low, medium, and high. Sows from P6-9 showed higher number of piglet birth weight below 1,200 g and higher birth weight coefficient of variation, in comparison to P 2 sows. Lower birth weight piglets and higher number of piglets weighing <1,200 g were observed in the low weight subgroup. There was a correlation of weight gain percentage during gestation with the number of visits to the feeder (r = 0.669) and with the number of aggressive encounters (r = 0.451). Variation in weight gain during the last month of gestation in group-housed sows is influenced by competition at feeding time, and the lower weight gain during the last month of gestation reduces the birth weight of piglets.

O presente estudo teve como objetivo avaliar o efeito da aplicação de um análogo sintético da PGF2 (cloprostenol sodico), associado à ocitocina ou carbetocina, sobre a eficiência da indução ao parto em suínos. O experimento I foi realizado com 284 fêmeas, distribuídas em quatro tratamentos: cloprostenol; cloprostenol e 0,100mg de carbetocina; cloprostenol e 10UI de ocitocina; solução salina (NaCl 0,9%). No experimento II, foram utilizadas 276 fêmeas, distribuídas em quatro tratamentos: cloprostenol; cloprostenol e 0,10mg de carbetocina; cloprostenol e 0,05mg de carbetocina; cloprostenol e 10UI de ocitocina. A indução do parto foi realizada aos 113 dias de gestação, pela aplicação de 0,175mg de cloprostenol, via submucosa vulvar. A carbetocina ou a ocitocina foram aplicadas 24h após a aplicação de cloprostenol, pela via intramuscular. O intervalo indução-parto foi menor (P<0,05) nos grupos cujo parto foi induzido com cloprostenol, em comparação ao grupo sem indução do parto. A aplicação de carbetocina ou ocitocina resultou em maior concentração dos partos (P<0,05) até 26 e 28h após a administração de cloprostenol. A utilização de carbetocina resultou em menor (P<0,05) duração do parto. No experimento I, o uso de ocitocina ou de carbetocina resultou em maior natimortalidade (P<0,05) do que no grupo sem indução do parto. Além disso, a natimortalidade foi maior (P<0,05) com o uso de carbetocina do que na indução somente com cloprostenol. No experimento II, não houve diferença na natimortalidade (P>0,05) entre os tratamentos. A utilização de ocitócitos, em associação com cloprostenol, resulta em partos antecipados e mais sincronizados. O uso associado de cloprostenol e carbetocina reduz o tempo de parto e 99% ou mais dos partos ocorrem em até quatro horas após a aplicação de carbetocina, independentemente da dose utilizada.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of a synthetic analogue of PGF2 (sodium cloprostenol) associated to carbetocin or oxytocin on the efficiency of farrowing induction in swine. In Experiment I, 284 females were distributed in four treatments: - cloprostenol; - cloprostenol and 0.10mg of carbetocin; - cloprostenol and 10UI of oxytocin; and saline solution. In Experiment II, 276 females were distributed in four treatments: cloprostenol; cloprostenol and 0.10mg of carbetocin; cloprostenol and 0.05mg of carbetocin; and cloprostenol and 10UI of oxytocin. Farrowing induction was performed at 113 days of gestation using an injection of 0.175mg cloprostenol by vulvar submucosal route. Carbetocin or oxytocin was administered 24h after cloprostenol, by intramuscular route. The interval induction-farrowing was shorter (P<0.05) in groups with cloprostenol compared to the group without farrowing induction. Cumulative farrowing, within 26h and 28h after cloprostenol administration, was higher (P<0.05) when carbetocin or oxytocin was used. The use of carbetocin resulted in a shorter (P<0.05) farrowing length. In experiment I, higher stillbirth rate (P<0.05) was observed with the use of carbetocin or oxytocin compared to group without farrowing induction. Furthermore, stillbirth rate was higher (P<0.05) with cloprostenol + carbetocin than with cloprostenol alone. In experiment II, there was no difference (P>0.05) in stillbirth rate among treatments. The use of oxytocic drugs, in association with cloprostenol, results in anticipated and more synchronized farrowings. Following the use of carbetocin in association with cloprostenol, occurs a reduction in farrowing length and 99% or more of farrowings take place within 4h after carbetocin administration, regardless of the dose used.

Os objetivos do presente estudo foram determinar as características de partos submetidos à intervenção manual e avaliar os efeitos dessa intervenção no desempenho reprodutivo subsequente e na taxa de remoção. Dados de 4121 partos foram separados em grupos Controle (3271 partos) e Intervenção (850 partos). O percentual de partos submetidos à intervenção manual foi de 20,6%. Não houve diferença (P>0,05) na ocorrência de intervenção ao parto de acordo com as classes de tamanho de leitegada (<11, 11-14 e >14 leitões). A proporção de intervenção ao parto aumentou (P<0,05) no verão e conforme o aumento da ordem de parto (OP). Nos partos com intervenção, foi constatada maior duração do parto (P<0,05), nas fêmeas OP 1, maior número de leitões natimortos e maior frequência de partos com pelo menos um natimorto (P<0,05), nas fêmeas OP 1, OP 3-5 e OP 6-10. No grupo Intervenção, maior intervalo desmame-estro (IDE), menor taxa de parto e menor tamanho da leitegada (P<0,05) foram observados nas fêmeas OP 1-2, OP 3-5 e OP 6-10, respectivamente. A taxa de remoção antes da inseminação no primeiro estro pós-desmame, tanto por causas reprodutivas, como não reprodutivas, foi maior (P<0,05) no grupo Intervenção. A intervenção manual ao parto é efetuada com maior frequência no verão e em fêmeas mais velhas. A intervenção obstétrica manual compromete o IDE, a taxa de parto ou o tamanho da leitegada subsequente.

The aim of this study was to determine the characteristics of farrowings with manual intervention and to evaluate the effect of this intervention on the subsequent reproductive performance and culling rate. Data of 4121 farrowings were separated in Control (3271 farrowings) and Intervention (850 farrowings) groups. The percentage of farrowings submitted to manual intervention was 20.6%. There was no difference (P>0.05) in the occurrence of intervention according to litter size classes (<11, 11-14 and >14 piglets). The proportion of intervention at parturition increased (P<0.05) during summer and in higher parity order (PO) females. In farrowings with intervention there were longer farrowing duration in PO 1 females (P<0.05) and greater number of stillborn piglets and higher frequency of farrowings with at least one stillborn (P<0.05) in PO 1, PO 3-5 and PO 6-10 females. In the Intervention group, greater weaning to estrus interval (WEI), lower farrowing rate and lower subsequent total born piglets (P<0.05) were observed in PO 1 and 2, PO 3-5 and PO 6-10, respectively. Removal rate before first insemination post weaning, by both reproductive and non reproductive reasons, was greater (P<0.05) in Intervention group. Manual intervention at parturition is more frequent during summer and among older females. Manual obstetric intervention compromise the WEI, the farrowing rate or the subsequent litter size.

Foram utilizadas 298 fêmeas pluríparas Camborough 22® distribuídas em dois tratamentos: T1 (n=154), inseminação intra-uterina (IAU) com dose inseminante (DI) contendo 0,5 bilhão de espermatozóides em volume total de 20ml; e T2 (n=144), inseminação tradicional (IAT), com DI contendo 3,0 bilhões de espermatozóides em volume total de 90ml. Foi possível a realização da IAU em 98,1% das fêmeas. A presença de sangue na extremidade do cateter ou espiral da pipeta de IAU foi observada em 8,4% das fêmeas. As taxas de prenhez (TPr) e de parto ajustada não diferiram (P>0,05) entre a IAU e IAT. O tamanho da leitegada (TL) diferiu entre os tratamentos (P<0,05), sendo observada redução de 0,8 leitão na IAU. A presença de sangue na IAU não afetou a TPr significativamente, mas reduziu o TL em 2,6 leitões.

A total of 298 Camborough 22® sows was distributed in two treatments: T1 (n=154): intrauterine insemination (IUI) with 0.5 billion sperms in 20ml total volume; T2 (n=144): traditional insemination (TAI) with 3.0 billion sperms in 90ml total volume. It was possible to perform the IUI in 98.1% of sows. It was observed presence of blood on the catheter tip or pipete in 8.4% of IUI sows. The pregnancy (PR) and adjusted farrowing rates did not differ (P>0.05) among treatments. Litter size (LS) differ among treatments (P<0.05), being observed a reduction of 0.8 piglet in IUI. The blood presence in the IUI did not affect the PR significantly, but resulted in a reduction of 2.6 piglets per litter.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o desempenho reprodutivo de 423 fêmeas suínas de ordem de parto 1 a 9 submetidas à inseminação intra-uterina (IAU), com um novo modelo de pipeta (T1) cuja extremidade não é fixada na cérvix ou uma pipeta de IAU modelo Verona® e que permite a fixação da sua extremidade em espiral na cérvix (T2). Para comparar as duas pipetas, foi considerado o grau de dificuldade para realização das inseminações, o tempo necessário para realizá-las, a presença de sangramento após a inseminação, a presença de refluxo no momento da inseminação, as taxas de retorno ao estro (TR), de prenhez (TPR) e de parto ajustada (TPA), além do número de leitões nascidos (NT). As fêmeas de ambos os grupos foram inseminadas com doses de 1 bilhão de espermatozóides, em intervalos de 24 horas. A passagem do cateter de IAU através da cérvix foi possível em 95,9% das fêmeas, sem diferença entre os tratamentos (P>0,05). Em pelo menos uma das inseminações, foi observado sangue no cateter, após a realização da IAU, em 20,6% das fêmeas do T1 e 15,2% das fêmeas do T2 (P=0,14). O tempo médio necessário para realizar a inseminação foi de 2,1 minutos para o T1 e 2,3 minutos para o T2 (P=0,26). O percentual de fêmeas com refluxo de sêmen no momento da inseminação foi maior (P=0,01) no T1 (8,4%) em comparação ao T2 (2,9%). Não houve diferença (P>0,05) nas variáveis TR (8,0 e 4,8%), TPR (93,4 e 96,2%) e NT (12,4 e 12,7 leitões) entre T1 e T2, respectivamente. A TPA do T1 (90,6%) apresentou tendência (P=0,07) de ser inferior à do T2 (95,1%). No T1, as fêmeas primíparas apresentaram maior TR e menor TPA em comparação às pluríparas (P<0,05). Os resultados mostram que a nova pipeta pode ser utilizada sem prejuízos ao desempenho reprodutivo, em fêmeas pluríparas, mas sugerem cautela para sua utilização em fêmeas primíparas.

The aim of this work was to evaluate the reproductive performance of 423 sows of 1 to 9 farrowings inseminated with two different intrauterine artificial insemination (IAU) pipettes. The first group (T1) was formed by sows inseminated with a new pipette whose extremity was not fixed in the cervix. The second group (T2) was formed by sows inseminated with a Verona® pipette model, with its extremity fixed in the cervix. The degree of difficulty to perform the insemination, the time spent during the insemination, the presence of blood after insemination and of semen backflow during insemination were considered for the comparison of these pipettes. Return to oestrus rate (RO), pregnancy rate (PR), adjusted farrowing rate (AFR) and total litter size (TLS) were also evaluated. All females were inseminated with 1 billion spermatozoa per dose applied at intervals of 24 hours. The catheter of IAU was successfully inserted in 95.9% of females without difference between treatments (P>0.05). The presence of blood, in at least one insemination, was observed in 20.6% of T1 and 15.2% of T2 females (P=0.14). The average time to perform the insemination was 2.1 minutes for T1 and 2.3 minutes for T2 females (P=0.26). The percentage of females with semen backflow was significantly higher (P=0.01) in T1 (8.4%) compared to T2 (2.9%) group. There were no differences (P>0.05) in RO (8.0% and 4.8%), PR (93.4% and 96.2%) and TLS (12.4 and 12.7 piglets) between T1 and T2 groups, respectively. AFR of T1 (90.6%) tended (P=0.07) to be lower than that of T2 (95.1%). Primiparous females of T1 showed higher RO and lower AFR in comparison to pluriparous (P<0.05). The results indicate that the new pipette can be used in pluriparous females without compromising their reproductive performance. However, caution is necessary for the utilization of this new pipette in primiparous females.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o comportamento de monta e as características seminais de machos Landrace (LD) e Large White (LW) dos 143 aos 232 dias de idade. A partir dos 143 dias de idade, 62 machos suínos foram avaliados quanto ao comportamento de monta. A partir dos 150 dias de idade, o sêmen foi coletado de 33 desses machos durante onze semanas para avaliar a produção e qualidade espermáticas. Não houve diferenças entre as raças em relação ao comportamento de monta (p=0,105). Durante o período de coletas de sêmen, houve aumento do volume de sêmen, da concentração espermática, do número de espermatozóides (SPTZ) ejaculados e da liberação diária de SPTZ (LDE). O percentual de células espermáticas anormais diminuiu durante o período e não houve diferença entre as raças (P=0,523). Os machos LD ejacularam maior volume de sêmen (P=0,016), de espermatozóides totais por ejaculado (P=0,070) e apresentaram maior LDE (P=0,042). Esses dados indicam que machos LD apresentam maior produção espermática e maior potencial para produzir doses de sêmen no período pós-púbere.

The aim of this work was to evaluate mating behavior and seminal characteristics of Landrace (LD) and Large White (LW) boars from 143 to 232 days of age. With 143 days of age, LD (n=28) and LW (n=34) boars were evaluated in relation to mating behavior. Being 150 days of age, semen was collected from 33 of these males during eleven weeks to evaluate sperm production and quality. No difference was observed between breeds in relation to mating behavior. During the period of semen collection, there was an increase in semen volume, sperm concentration and motility, total sperm in ejaculate, and in daily sperm output (DSO). The percent of abnormal sperm cells decreased during the period and there was no difference between breeds (P=0.523). The LD boars ejaculated higher semen volume (P=0,016), total sperm in ejaculate (P=0.070), and showed higher DSO (P=0.042). These data indicate that LD boars show higher sperm production, and higher potential to produce semen doses in post pubertal period.

Foram realizados dois experimentos para avaliar o efeito da incubação prévia e da taxa de resfriamento sobre a viabilidade de sêmen suíno resfriado. Doses de sêmen de 100ml, com três bilhões de espermatozóides, foram armazenadas a 17ºC ou 5ºC. Foram avaliados os percentuais de motilidade (MOT), de acrossomas normais (ACN) e de membranas íntegras (MI). Foram coletados 5 e 6 ejaculados de 6 e 4 machos, nos experimentos I e II, respectivamente. No experimento I, foram comparados três tratamentos: armazenamento a 17ºC (T1); a 5ºC com incubação prévia de 24h a 17ºC (T2) e a 5ºC, após queda lenta (cerca de 15h para chegar a 5ºC) de temperatura (T3). O T1 apresentou melhores resultados (P<0,05) de MOT e MI em comparação aos T2 e T3. Não houve diferença (P>0,05) de MOT e MI entre T2 e T3 e de ACN (P>0,05, entre os três tratamentos. No experimento II, foram avaliados 4 tratamentos: armazenamento a 17ºC (T1); a 5°C com incubação de 24h a 17ºC (T2); a 17ºC com incubação prévia de 8h a 22ºC (T3) e a 5ºC com duas temperaturas e períodos de incubação (T4; 22ºC por 8h e 17ºC por 16h). Não houve diferença (P>0,05) de MOT, ACN e MI entre T1 e T3 e, também, entre T2 e T4. O armazenamento a 17ºC (T1 e T3) apresentou MOT e MI (P<0,05) superiores ao armazenamento a 5ºC (T2 e T4), a partir das 72h. A curva lenta de resfriamento ou a incubação prévia de 24h a 17ºC bem como a incubação por 24h a 17°C ou por 8h a 22ºC mais 16h a 17ºC não afetam a viabilidade do sêmen armazenado a 5°C. O resfriamento a 5ºC ainda precisa ser otimizado de modo a obter viabilidade espermática semelhante à observada a 17ºC.

Two experiments were carried out to evaluate the effect of previous incubation and cooling rate on the viability of swine cooled semen. Semen doses of 100ml, containing three billion spermatozoa, were stored at 17ºC or 5ºC. Percentages of motility (MOT), normal acrosomes (ACN), and intact membranes (MI) were evaluated. A number of 5 and 6 ejaculates were collected from 6 and 4 boars in experiments I and II, respectively. In experiment I, three treatments were compared: storage at 17ºC (T1); storage at 5ºC with 24h incubation at 17ºC (T2), and at 5ºC, after a slow (about 15h to reach 5ºC) temperature decrease (T3). T1 presented better results (P<0.05) for MOT and MI as compared to T2 and T3. No difference (P>0.05) was found in MOT and MI between T2 and T3 and in ACN (P>0.05) among the three treatments. In experiment II, 4 treatments were evaluated: storage at 17ºC (T1); at 5°C with 24h incubation at 17ºC (T2); at 17ºC with previous 8h incubation at 22ºC (T3), and storage at 5ºC (T4) with two incubation temperatures and periods (at 22ºC for 8h and at 17ºC for 16h). No difference (P>0.05) was verified in MOT, ACN and MI between T1 and T3 and also between T2 and T4. Storage at 17ºC (T1 and T3) presented better MOT and MI (P<0.05) as compared to storage at 5ºC (T2 and T4), from 72h onwards. Previous incubation or slow temperature decrease as well as incubation for 24h at 17ºC or for 8h at 22ºC plus 16h at 17ºC do not affect the viability of semen stored at 5ºC. Cooling to 5ºC still needs to be optimized so that viability be similar to that observed at 17ºC.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar três métodos de inseminação artificial(IA) no suíno em relação ao tempo de infusão e perdas por refluxo da DI durante a IA e aos 120 minutos após a IA, bem como dados de operacionalidade medido pelo grau de dificuldade verificado para execução da IA e dados de desempenho reprodutivo. Foram utilizadas 604 matrizes até a parição 7 e IDE < 7 dias. As fêmeas foram inseminadas em 3 tratamentos: T1= método auto IA com pipetas longas lameladas (Supertip®), sêmen acondicionado em flexitubos® e aparato de IA constituído por uma cinta abdominal e uma mala dorsal; T2= método intermediário, pipetas Supertip®, flexitubos® e sem aparato de IA; T3= método tradicional, pipetas tipo Melrose, sêmen acondicionado em bisnagas e sem aparato de IA, onde o tempo de IA ficou atrelado ao desempenho do funcionário. O tempo médio de IA foi diferente (P<0,02) entre os três tratamentos (1,7±1,6; 2,2±1,8 e 3,6±1,1 minutos para T1, T2 e T3 respectivamente). Em uma parte dos animais (108 fêmeas distribuídas nos 3 tratamentos) foram coletados os refluxos até 120 minutos transcorridos das IAs por meio de uma bolsa de colostomia fixada na vulva . O volume de refluxo durante a IA foi maior (P<0,02) em T1 (7,7±13,5mL) quando comparado a T3 (5,8±10,8mL). Não foram verificadas diferenças entre os tratamentos no número de espermatozóides eliminados por refluxo até 120 minutos após a IA. Independentemente do tratamento, em torno de 70% do volume e 30% do total de espermatozóides contidos na DI foram eliminados por refluxo em até duas horas após a IA. Na avaliação do grau de dificuldade, foi verificado que, no T1= 85,6%, no T2= 92,9 e no T3= 97,7% das fêmeas tiveram suas inseminações concluídas com até uma intervenção (P<0,05 entre todos os tratamentos). Com relação as taxas de retornos ao estro, taxa de parto ajustada e número de leitões nascidos não foram observadas diferenças entre os tratamentos (P>0,05). As taxas de retorno ao estro foram 10,3, 7,4 e 8,5 %, a taxa de parto ajustada foi de 90,8, 94,0 e 91,7% com 10,9, 11,1 e 11,1 leitões nascidos totais em T1, T2 e T3, respectivamente. O método auto IA e o método intermediário proporcionam IAs mais rápidas e podem substituir o método tradicional sem prejuízos ao desempenho reprodutivo.

This study was performed to compare the Hands-free insemination method, i.e., the high degree automation procedure, with an intermediate method, which allows less participation of the inseminator during the application of the inseminating dose (ID), and the conventional method, which is widely used in Brazil. The comparison was based on infusion time and losses due to semen backflow during AI and 120 minutes after AI, degree of difficulty experienced during AI procedure, and reproductive performance data. A number of 604 sows on the parity up to 7 and a weaning to estrus interval < 7 days were used. Females were distributed into 3 treatments: T1= hands-free AI method, with long coilable shaft pipettes (Supertip®), semen stored in flexitubes® and AI device consisting of an abdominal belt and a saddlebag; T2= intermediate method, Supertip® pipettes, flexitubes®, without AI device; T3= traditional method, Melrose-type pipettes, semen stored in tubs, without AI device. AI time was associated with the inseminator’s performance. The average AI time was different (P<0.02) among treatments (1.7±1.6; 2.2±1.8 e 3.6±1.1 minutes for T1, T2 and T3 respectively). One hundred eight sows distributed into the three treatments, had the semen backflow collected up to 120 minutes after AI in a colostomy bag fixed by the vulva. Semen backflow volume during AI was higher (P<0.02) in T1 (7.7±13.5 mL) as compared to T3 (5.8±10.8 mL). There were no differences among treatments in the number of spermatozoa eliminated by semen backflow up to 120 minutes after AI. Regardless of the treatment, nearly 70% of the volume and 30% of the total spermatozoa contained in the ID were eliminated by semen backflow up to 2 hours after AI. Concerning the degree of difficulty of the AI procedure, 85.6%, 92.9 and 97.7% of T1, T2 and T3 females were inseminated with up to 1 intervention (P<0,05 between all treatments). There were no differences among treatments (P>0.05) in return to estrus rate, adjusted farrowing rate and number of born piglets. The return to estrus rates were 10.3, 7.4 and 8.5%, adjusted farrowing rates were 90.8, 94.0 and 91.7%, with 10.9, 11.1 e 11.1 total born piglets in T1, T2 and T3, respectively. The Hands free method and the intermediate method allowed faster AI and can replace the traditional method without influence on the reproductive performance.
