ABSTRACT: The growing worldwide demand in the pulp market has fostered research that evaluates alternative fiber sources with specific characteristics that attend the needs of the consumer market, with a view to add value to the final product and reduce production costs. Acacia mearnsii De Wild wood is a by-product of the extraction of tannin from the trunk bark, used for firewood, charcoal and pellets. However, its wood is still poorly studied, especially its anatomical characteristics, which can provide important information about its industrial potential. This study evaluated the anatomical characteristics of Acacia mearnsii wood for the production of pulp and paper. Ten trees at approximately seven years old were cut down, five from the seed production area (SPA) and five from the clonal population area (CPA). From each tree, one trunk disc was sectioned at the diameter at breast height (DBH), resulting in 10 (ten) wood samples. From each disc, a sapwood specimen was made oriented in the tangential longitudinal, radial longitudinal and transversal planes, for later obtaining the anatomical cuts and the macerates. The anatomical description of the wood followed the recommendations of the International Association of Wood Anatomists-IAWA. From the dimensions of the fibers, their quality evaluation ratios for the production of pulp and paper were calculated. Results obtained from the anatomical characterization allowed to conclude that the Acacia mearnsii woods from SPA and CPA are indicated as a source of raw material for the pulp and paper production.

RESUMO: A crescente demanda mundial do mercado de polpa celulósica tem fomentado pesquisas que avaliem fontes de fibras alternativas com características específicas que atendam às necessidades do mercado consumidor, visando agregar valor ao produto final e reduzir os custos de produção. No estado do Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil, o lenho de Acacia mearnsii De Wild é considerado um subproduto da extração de tanino da casca do tronco, utilizada como lenha, carvão e pellets. No entanto, ainda é pouco estudado, em especial suas características anatômicas, as quais podem fornecer informações importantes sobre suas potencialidades industriais. O presente estudo teve como objetivo avaliar as características anatômicas do lenho de Acacia mearnsii para a produção de celulose e papel. Foram coletadas dez árvores com aproximadamente sete anos de idade, sendo cinco provenientes da área de produção de sementes (APS) e cinco da área de povoamento clonal (APC). De cada árvore, foi seccionado um disco do tronco na altura do DAP, resultando em dez amostras de lenho. De cada disco, foi confeccionado um corpo de prova do alburno, orientado nos planos longitudinal tangencial, longitudinal radial e transversal, para posterior obtenção dos cortes anatômicos e dos macerados. A descrição anatômica do lenho seguiu as recomendações da Associação Internacional de Anatomistas da Madeira-IAWA. A partir das dimensões das fibras, foram calculados os seus índices de avaliação da qualidade para a produção de celulose e papel. Os resultados obtidos da caracterização anatômica permitiram concluir que os lenhos de Acacia mearnsii provenientes de APS e APC são indicados como matérias-primas para a produção de celulose e papel.

ABSTRACT: Sodium reduction and the substitution of sodium chloride by other salts have been extensively studied in order to produce healthier foods. Coppa is a pork cured product that receives high levels of sodium through the salting process. The objective of this work was to evaluate the impact of reductions in Sodium Chloride (NaCl), substitution by Potassium Chloride (KCl) and reductions in the re-salting time on the physicochemical, microbiological and sensorial characteristics in pork coppa. Four treatments were applied: T1 with 2 days of salting, 2 days of re-salting and 35 % reduction of NaCl; T2 with 2 days of salting and 3 days of re-salting and 35 % reduction of NaCl; T3 with 2 days of salting and 2 days of re-salting and replacing 35 % of NaCl by KCl; T4 with 2 days of salting and 3 days of re-salting and 35 % replacing NaCl by KCl. Control: standard treatment was applied with 100 % of NaCL and salting time was 2 days and then 5 days to re-salting. The reduction in sodium content in processed pork Coppa produced no microbiological nor physicochemical changes. The reduction in salting together with salting and re-salting time and the partial replacement of NaCl by KCl resulted in reductions from 2,000 mg to 1,600 mg of sodium. Sensory evaluation demonstrated that the reduction in re-salting time was efficient using the ideal profile method which showed that treatments T1 and T2 were efficient in creating a product that meets consumer expectations.

RESUMO: Descrevem-se os dados epidemiológicos e quadro clínico-patológico de cinco surtos de intoxicação cianogênica em bovinos que ingeriram espontaneamente grama estrela (Cynodon nlemfuensis Vanderyst var. nlemfuensis cv. ‘Florico’). Em todos os surtos, as áreas onde a planta se encontrava haviam sido previamente adubadas com altas concentrações de nitrogênio e as propriedades adotavam o sistema silvipastoril com Eucaliptus sp. Os primeiros sinais clínicos surgiram entre 10 e 15 minutos após a primeira introdução dos bovinos e caracterizou-se por tremores musculares, dispneia, timpanismo moderado, andar cambaleante, respiração forçada com a boca aberta, decúbito esternal seguido de morte após 15 a 30 minutos e/ou, recuperação em poucas horas após início dos sinais. No total, adoeceram 43 vacas e destas 18 morreram. Duas necropsias foram realizadas e não foram encontradas alterações significativas, exceto a presença da planta próxima a região do esfíncter esofágico. Através da microscopia não foram visualizadas lesões histológicas. Folhas verdes da grama estrela foram coletadas de todas as propriedades onde os surtos ocorreram e realizadas o teste do papel picro-sódico, o qual revelou coloração vermelho-tijolo em 20 minutos após maceração das folhas.

ABSTRACT: This study reports the epidemiological data and the clinical-pathological condition of five outbreaks of cyanogenic poisoning in cattle spontaneously ingesting star grass (Cynodon nlemfuensis Vanderyst var. nlemfuensis cv. ‘Florico’). In all outbreaks, the areas where the plant was previously fertilized with high concentrations of nitrogen and the properties adopted the silvipastoral system. The first clinical signs appeared between 10 and 15 minutes after the first introduction of cattle and were characterized by muscular tremors, dyspnea, moderate tympanism, staggering gait, forced breathing with open mouth, sternal recumbency followed by death after 15 to 30 minutes and/or recovery in a few hours after the signs started. In total, 43 cows have become ill and 18 died. Two necropsies were performed and no significant changes were found except for the presence of the plant near the esophageal sphincter region. No histological lesions were seen through microscopy. Green leaves of the star grass were collected from all properties where the outbreaks occurred and the test of the picro-sodium paper was performed, revealing red-brick coloration in 20 minutes after maceration of the leaves.

Abstract Objective: To compare the teaching of the pulpectomy in primary teeth among graduate and undergraduate Brazilian dental schools. Material and Methods: From August 2015 to July 2016, an 11-question survey was sent to 44 graduate and 207 undergraduate dental schools. Data obtained were summarized using descriptive statistics. Results: The response rate was higher from graduate (56.8%) than undergraduate (41.1%) courses. Pulpectomy was taught by all participating schools. More than 90% of the undergraduate and graduate courses recommend the use of hand instruments for canals debridement, but the widening of root canals was advised in 69.4% of undergraduate and in 84% of graduate schools. Regarding the irrigatings, 1% sodium hypochlorite as a single irrigating solution was the most taught for both biopulpectomy and necropulpectomy. The iodoform-based Guedes-Pinto paste as the single indication was the preferred root canal filling material in undergraduate schools (30.6%), while the zinc oxide-thickened calcium hydroxide paste as the single option was the most recommended in graduate courses (36%). Endodontic hand file associated with lentulo drill for filling root canals was recommended by most courses. Overall, biopulpectomy was performed in one session, while necropulpectomy led two sessions. Periapical radiograph for diagnosis and final obturation was the most adopted conduct by undergraduate (68.2%) and graduate (72%) schools. Gutta-percha and glass ionomer cement were preferred materials to seal the entrance of the pulp chamber. Conclusion: There was variability in the techniques and materials taught to perform pulpectomy in primary teeth among Brazilian graduate and undergraduate dental schools. Calcium hydroxide paste has been used in similar proportion to iodoform-based paste.

Resumo:O objetivo deste trabalho foi caracterizar o desempenho de genótipos elite de trigo de diferentes programas de melhoramento do Brasil, para caracteres associados à produtividade de grãos e à germinação na pré-colheita. O estudo foi conduzido em 2010 e 2011 no Município de Capão do Leão, RS, em delineamento experimental de blocos ao acaso, com três repetições. Foram avaliados 33 genótipos de trigo quanto aos caracteres relacionados à germinação em pré-colheita e ao rendimento de grãos. A estimativa da distância genética foi utilizada para predizer combinações potenciais na seleção de plantas com alta produtividade de grãos e tolerância à germinação na pré-colheita. A análise combinada de grãos germinados e número de queda mostra que os genótipos TBIO Alvorada, TBIO Mestre, Frontana, Fundacep Raízes, Fundacep Cristalino e BRS Guamirim apresentam tolerância à germinação em pré-colheita. As combinações de TBIO Alvorada e TBIO Mestre com Fundacep Cristalino mostram alto potencial na recuperação de genótipos superiores para elevada produtividade de grãos e tolerância à germinação em pré-colheita.

Abstract:The objective of this work was to characterize the performance of elite wheat genotypes from different Brazilian breeding programs for traits associated with grain yield and preharvest sprouting. The study was conducted in 2010 and 2011 in the municipality of Capão do Leão, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, in a randomized complete block design with three replicates. Thirty-three wheat genotypes were evaluated for traits related to preharvest sprouting and grain yield. The estimate of genetic distance was used to predict potential combinations for selection of plants with high grain yield and tolerance to preharvest sprouting. The combined analysis of sprouted grains and falling number shows that the TBIO Alvorada, TBIO Mestre, Frontana, Fundacep Raízes, Fundacep Cristalino, and BRS Guamirim genotypes are tolerant to preharvest sprouting. Combinations of TBIO Alvorada and TBIO Mestre with Fundacep Cristalino show high potential for recovering superior genotypes for high grain yield and tolerance to preharvest sprouting.

A mucolipidose tipo III é uma doença rara, autossômica recessiva, que faz parte de um grupo de doenças de depósito, decorrentes do erro inato do metabolismo das enzimas lisossômicas. Caracteriza-se pelo aparecimento progressivo de sinais e sintomas com repercussão no desenvolvimento físico e mental, bem como alterações visuais, cardíacas, esqueléticas e articulares. Apesar de achados bucais estarem bem relatados em associação à mucolipidose tipo II, esse artigo descreve achados radiográficos e histológicos de múltiplas lesões radiolúcidas, associadas a dentes inclusos nos maxilares, em uma jovem de 16 anos de idade com mucolipidose tipo III

Mucolipidosis type III is a rare, autosomal recessive disorder, which is part of a group of storage diseases as a result of inborn error of lysosomal enzyme metabolism. It is characterized by the gradual onset of signs and symptoms affecting the physical and mental development as well as visual changes, heart, skeletal and joint. Although oral findings associated with mucolipidosis type II have been extensively reported, there is a shortage of information on mucolipidosis type III. This paper presents radiological and histological findings of multiple radiolucent lesions associated with impacted teeth in the jaw of a 16 year-old youngster with mucolipidosis type III.

Abstract This research had the objectives to determinate the growth in diameter, commercial volume, current annual increment in percentage of the commercial volume and the commercial form factor for Cordia trichotoma (Vell.) Arrab. Ex Steud., in the central area of the Rio Grande do Sul State. Backman´s equation was more efficient, being selected for the adjust of the current annual increment in percentage of the commercial form factor as function of DBH. The commercial form factor variation ranged from 0.51 at 15 years of age, to a maximum value of 0.80 at 90 years old. The current annual increment in percentage of the commercial volume varied from 25.90 to 2.22 %, obtained at 15 and 90 years old, respectively.

Resumo Esta pesquisa teve como objetivo determinar o crescimento em diâmetro, volume comercial, incremento corrente anual em percentagem do volume comercial e o fator de forma comercial para Cordia trichotoma (Vell.) Arrab. Ex Steud., na área central do Estado do Rio Grande do Sul. A equação de Backman foi mais eficiente, sendo selecionada para o ajuste do incremento corrente anual em percentagem do volume comercial e o fator de forma comercial, em função do DAP. O fator de forma comercial variou desde 0,51 aos 15 anos de idade, até um valor máximo de 0,80 aos 90 anos. O incremento corrente anual em percentagem do volume comercial variou de 25,90 a 2,22% dos 15 aos 90 anos de idade, respectivamente.

RESUMO Neste trabalho, foram estudados o crescimento e a produção de povoamentos monoclonais de Eucalyptus saligna Smith, manejados em alto fuste, na região sudeste do estado do Rio Grande do Sul. Para tanto foi analisado um experimento de desbaste com delineamento blocos ao acaso, instalado aos 60 meses de idade e mensurado anualmente até os 135 meses, com 5 tratamentos e três repetições. Pelo comportamento da Testemunha sem desbaste e dos tratamentos com manutenção de índices de espaçamento relativo de 16, 23, 28 e 33% verificou-se a influência no crescimento e na produção, obtendo-se os parâmetros dendrométricos. Os resultados obtidos no experimento indicam a manutenção de índices de espaçamento relativo entre 16% e 23%, por ocasionarem menor perda de produção total e ganho significativo em diâmetro médio (DAP).

ABSTRACT In this paper there were studied the growth and yield of monoclonal thinned stands of Eucalyptus saligna Smith, in the southeastern region of Rio Grande do Sul state. An experiment in randomized blocks was analyzed, initiated at the age of 60 months and measured annually up to 135 months, with 5 treatments and three replication. The behavior of the control treatment, without thinning, and the treatments with maintenance of relative spacing indexes of 16, 23, 28 and 33% indicates influence in growth and yield, being obtained the dendrometric parameters. The results indicate the maintenance of indexes of relative spacing between 16 and 23%, since these cause less loss in total production and significant increment in average diameter (DBH).

RESUMO Este trabalho teve como objetivo o estudo do crescimento em diâmetro (DAP), volume comercial (Vc), incremento corrente anual em percentagem do volume comercial (ICA%) e a determinação do fator de forma comercial (f) para canela-lageana Ocotea pulchella Nees et Mart. ex Nees, na região da Depressão Central do estado do Rio Grande do Sul. Para o ajuste dos dados de crescimento em diâmetro e volume comercial sem casca foram testadas três equações matemáticas, sendo que a equação Quadrática resultou como modelo mais eficiente, para estimar o DAP e o Vc, ajustada em função da idade das árvores. A equação de Backman foi selecionada para o ajuste do ICA% e do f, sendo os valores determinados em função do diâmetro à altura do peito para facilitar a aplicação prática. O fator de forma comercial variou desde 0,40 para um DAP de 5 cm até um valor máximo de 0,85 para DAP de 22 a 32 cm, decrescendo até 0,78 aos 51 cm de DAP, entre as idades de 10 e 100 anos, respectivamente. O incremento corrente anual em percentagem do volume comercial variou de 17,48% aos 10 anos a 1,33% aos 100 anos de idade. A espécie apresentou um bom potencial de crescimento, o que associado com práticas de manejo poderá elevar sua produtividade.

ABSTRACT This work had as objectives the study of the growth in DBH, commercial volume (CV), current annual increment in percentage of the commercial volume (CAI) and the determination of the commercial form factor (f) for Ocotea pulchella Nees et Mart. ex Nees, in the Central Depression of the Rio Grande do Sul State. The growth data were tested with three mathematical equations, for the adjustment of diameter and commercial volume without bark. The quadratic equation resulted as a more efficient model, for the CV and DBH estimate, adjusted in function of the age of the trees. The Backman equation was selected for the CAI and for the f estimate. The values were determined in function of the DBH to facilitate practical application. The commercial form factor varied from 0,40 for a DBH of 5 cm to a maximum value of 0,85 for a DBH from 22 to 32 cm, decreasing up to 0,78 at 51 cm of DBH, between the ages of 10 and 100 years. The average annual increment in percentage of the commercial volume varied from 17,48% for 10 years to 1,33% for 100 years of age. The species presented a good growth potential, that associated with management practices can increase its productivity.

RESUMO A falta de conhecimentos específicos com respeito aos requisitos silviculturais da araucária motivou o desenvolvimento deste trabalho que teve como principais objetivos o agrupamento de unidades amostrais similares em razão dos fatores físicos e dos nutrientes do solo, das acículas e da serapilheira de um povoamento de Araucaria angustifolia (Bert.) O. Ktze. Isso foi realizado mediante a comparação sistemática de uma distância estatística e da obtenção de funções discriminantes que permitiram classificar novas unidades amostrais nos grupos formados, para a Floresta Nacional de Canela (RS). Para tanto, foram utilizadas as técnicas de análise estatística multivariada de Análise de Cluster e Análise Discriminante. Por meio da Análise de Cluster, tomando-se por base uma matriz de doze casos (árvores) por 84 colunas (variáveis), foram obtidos três grupos, sendo estes distintos da classificação natural de sítios. Pela Análise Discriminante, foram determinadas duas funções discriminantes, que tomaram por base oito variáveis brutas, como suficientes para classificar novos indivíduos nos grupos obtidos pela Análise de Cluster.

ABSTRACT The lack of specific knowledge with regard to the silvicultural requirements of the Paraná pine motivated the development of this work, that had as main objective the grouping of similar sample units according to the physical factors and to the nutrients of the soil, to the leafs and to the burlap of a stand of Araucaria angustifolia (Bert.) O. Ktze. This was accomplished through the systematic comparison of a statistical distance and through the obtaining of discriminant functions a allowed to classify new sample units in the groups, in the National Forest of Canela, RS. To do so the statistical techniques of multivariate analysis of Cluster and Discriminant Analysis were used. Through the Cluster Analysis, taking as base a head office of 12 cases (trees) for 84 columns classification. For the Discriminant Analysis two discriminant functions, were determined taking as base eight rude variables, enough to classify new individuals in the groups obtained by the Cluster Analysis.

RESUMO Este trabalho teve como objetivos o estudo do crescimento da altura dominante em função da idade em três sítios naturais e a determinação da eficiência da classificação natural de sítios para Araucaria angustifolia (Bert.) O. Ktze. em um plantio na região de Canela, RS. Para o ajuste dos dados de altura e idade, obtidos mediante análise de tronco, utilizou-se a equação de Richards de dois e de três coeficientes, resultando o modelo com três coeficientes mais eficiente para o ajuste dos dados das doze árvores dominantes amostradas nos três sítios naturais em estudo. Obteve-se como resultado sete grupos de árvores dominantes com diferentes tendências de crescimento, demonstrando que a classificação natural de sítios não detectou, de maneira precisa, o efeito das variáveis ambientais no crescimento em altura de Araucaria angustifolia.

ABSTRACT This work has had as its principal objectives the study of dominant height growth considering its age in three natural sites, and the determination of natural sites classification efficacy for the Araucaria angustifolia (Bert.) O. Ktze. in a planting stand in Canela, RS. For height and age data adjustment, determined through stem analysis, it was used the RICHARDS (1959) non-linear mathematics model, with two and three coefficients, resulting the three coefficient model as the most efficient to data adjustment of twelve dominant tree sampled on three natural sites in study. Seven groups of dominant trees with different trends growth were obtained, indicating that the natural sites classification did not detect with accuracy the effects of environmental variables on height growth of Araucaria angustifolia.
