Mari-mari (Cassia leiandra Benth.) is an Amazonian native fruit that is highly appreciated in the northern region of Brazil, but there are few studies regarding its chemical composition and/or biological properties. A phytochemical study was conducted on the extracts of the pulp, peel and seeds; and their antioxidant, cytotoxic and antimicrobial potential were also determined. Methanol and acetone extracts from different fruit parts were subjected to total phenolic, 2,2-diphenyl-1 picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging and FeIII reducing capacity (FRAP) assays. From the peel extracts, the engeletin and astilbin could also be isolated and characterized based on nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and high-resolution mass spectrometry. A quantification using ultra-fast liquid chromatography of acetone dry crude extracts (DCE) of the peel showed that engeletin was the main compound (532.77 mg g-1 DCE). Astilbin content was also determined (131.53 mg g-1 DCE). The antibacterial and antiproliferative activities were evaluated and the methanol extract of the peel showed higher growth inhibition activity against all tested bacteria. Engeletin showed a relevant antimicrobial effect against Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis and Escherichia coli. Acetone and methanol peel extracts exhibited a relevant inhibitory effect on the proliferation of breast carcinoma cells (MCF-7), with no toxicity to the normal cell line (NIH/3T3).

Crisis hotlines are direct communication systems, usually telephone-based, set up to prevent suicide. However, few studies have evaluated their effectiveness. The present study aims to perform a systematic review, using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) framework, of the effectiveness of interventions through direct communication systems to reduce the number of suicides or suicide attempts. We searched the MEDLINE, Cochrane, SciELO, and ClinicaTrials.gov databases, and used the 2011 Oxford Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine Levels of Evidence classification. The literature search yielded 267 studies, of which 35 fulfilled the selection criteria. Although significant heterogeneity was found among studies, there is evidence that direct telephone interventions are effective when included in broader preventive protocols and provided by trained staff. Despite the limitations, which included heterogeneity of samples, designs, and outcome measures, we were able to design a protocol for the use of remote services to prevent suicide and suicide attempts. A hotline or similar system could be an effective intervention for broader suicide prevention programs. However, further research is necessary to specify which protocol components are key to enhance effectiveness. Systematic review registry number: PROSPERO CRD42020206517

ABSTRACT Introduction: Lipodystrophy is an important complication of HIV and has different clinical manifestations, such as lipoatrophy of the face, buttocks, and limbs and accumulation of fat in the abdominal and cervical regions. Lipodystrophy has aesthetic and psychosocial consequences, stigmatizing and affecting patients’ quality of life. The objective is to evaluate the epidemiology and treatments performed in patients treated at the HIV-related Lipodystrophy Outpatient Clinic at Hospital das Clínicas da Faculdade de Medicina de Botucatu. Method: The study was conducted retrospectively, with port analysis of patients treated between June 2012 and December 2019, at Hospital das Clínicas da Faculdade de Medicina de Botucatu, in Botucatu, S P, Brazil. Results: The medical records of 153 individuals were analyzed, 79 male and 74 female patients. The mean age was 45.6 years. The referrals came from 48 cities in four states. Caucasian patients accounted for 74.5% of the consultations. The complaint of facial lipodystrophy was reported by 52.9% of the patients. The most common invasive procedure was facial filling with polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) in 62 patients. Gluteal implants were the most common surgery on six occasions. Conclusion: The data found show a higher proportion of female patients with complaints of lipodystrophy when compared to general data of patients with HIV. The white race was predominant, and the main complaint of lipodystrophy was facial atrophy. Facial filling with PMMA was the most common procedure.

RESUMO Introdução: A lipodistrofia é uma importante complicação do HIV e apresenta diferentes manifestações clínicas, como lipoatrofia de face, glúteos e membros, e acúmulo de gordura em região abdominal e cervical. A lipodistrofia apresenta consequências estéticas e psicossociais, que são estigmatizantes e afetam a qualidade de vida dos pacientes. O objetivo é avaliar a epidemiologia e os tratamentos realizados nos pacientes atendidos no Ambulatório de Lipodistrofia relacionada ao HIV do Hospital das Clínicas da Faculdade de Medicina de Botucatu. Método: O estudo foi realizado de maneira retrospectiva, com análise de portuário dos pacientes atendidos entre junho de 2012 e dezembro de 2019, no Hospital das Clínicas da Faculdade de Medicina de Botucatu, em Botucatu, S P, Brasil. Resultados: Os prontuários de 153 indivíduos foram analisados, sendo 79 pacientes do sexo masculino e 74 do sexo feminino. A média de idade foi 45,6 anos. Os encaminhamentos tiveram origem de 48 cidades, de quatro estados. Pacientes da raça branca totalizaram 74,5% dos atendimentos. A queixa de lipodistrofia de face foi referida por 52,9% dos pacientes. O procedimento invasivo mais realizado foi o preenchimento facial com polimetilmetacrilato (PMMA), em 62 pacientes. A inclusão de implantes glúteos foi a cirurgia mais realizada, em seis ocasiões. Conclusão: Os dados encontrados mostram maior proporção de pacientes do sexo feminino com queixa de lipodistrofia, quando comparados a dados gerais de pacientes com HIV. A raça branca foi predominante e a principal queixa de lipodistrofia foi a atrofia facial. O preenchimento facial com PMMA foi o procedimento mais realizado.

This paper evaluates the use of the airbrush adapted solution blow spinning process as a secondary recycling method to produce recycled polycarbonate nanofibers. The results show a gradual improvement in fiber morphology and reduction in fiber diameter with increasing concentration, obtaining fibers at 18% w/v, indicating that the process is effective in producing high-quality nanofibers. The ideal morphology for the samples was obtained under 21%w/v and 60 Psi of air pressure with an 80nm average diameter. The thermal analysis demonstrates that the fibers possess similar thermal behavior to pure polycarbonate while the oxidation index didn’t show significant degradation on the fibers, suggesting that they can be used as standalone nanofibers for advanced applications. The produced nanofibers have diameters below 100 nm, making them suitable for use in face mask filters, among other applications. The study provides a new approach for the recycling of polycarbonate materials, offering a sustainable solution for their reuse.

RESUMO Introdução: A infecção pelo HIV e as queimaduras são um problema comum de saúde pública, principalmente em países de baixa e média renda. Há uma escassez na literatura sobre a epidemiologia de pacientes HIV positivos hospitalizados em unidades de queimados. O objetivo deste estudo é avaliar dados clínicoepidemiológicos de pacientes HIV positivos internados em uma Unidade de Terapia de Queimaduras. Métodos: Realizada análise retrospectiva de pacientes com diagnóstico de HIV internados na Unidade de Terapia de Queimados do Hospital Estadual de Bauru entre os anos de 2008 e 2018. Resultados: No total, foram revisados 2364 prontuários e encontrados 14 (0,6%) pacientes com diagnóstico de HIV. A idade média foi 43,1 anos. Quanto ao gênero, nove (64,3%) eram masculinos e cinco (35,7%) femininos. O mecanismo mais comum foi por chama direta em 11 (78,7%) casos. A etiologia foi álcool (42,9%) em seis pacientes, em três explosão (21,5%) e os demais foram gasolina, cigarro e contato com escapamento, todos com um (7,1%) caso. A causa mais comum foi acidente, em nove (64,3%) casos, dois (14,3%) tentativa de homicídio, um (7,1%) autoextermínio e dois (14,3%) casos sem informação. Em relação à superfície corporal queimada (%SCQ), cinco (37,5%) apresentavam queimaduras de 0-10%, três (21,4%) de 11-20% e cinco (35,7%) maiores que 20%, e em um era desconhecida. Quatro (28,6%) apresentaram lesões de vias aéreas. Dois (14,3%) pacientes foram a óbito. Conclusão: A prevalência de pacientes HIV positivos queimados internados em uma unidade especializada para este tratamento se assemelha à nacional, com características semelhantes em relação a idade e gênero.

ABSTRACT Introduction: HIV infection and burns are common public health issues, especially in low- and middle-income countries. There is a paucity in the literature evaluating the epidemiology of burns hospitalization in HIV patients. This study aims to evaluate the clinical and epidemiological profile of HIV-positive patients hospitalized in a Burn Therapy Unit. Methods: A retrospective analysis of burn patients diagnosed with HIV was performed at the Therapy Unit of the State Hospital of Bauru between 2008 and 2018. Results: 2,364 medical records were reviewed, and 14 (0.6%) patients were diagnosed with HIV. The mean age was 43.1 years. Regarding gender, nine (64.3%) were male, and five (35.7%) were female. The most common mechanism was direct flame in 11 (78.7%) cases. The etiology was alcohol (42.9%) in six patients, in three explosions (21. 5%), and the others were gasoline, cigarettes and contact with exhaustion, all with one (7.1%) case. When the cause of these burns was evaluated, nine (64.3%) were due to accidents, either at work or home, two (14.3%) for attempted murder, one (7.1%) self-extermination, and two (14.3%) cases had no information. Regarding total burn surface area, five (37.5%) had burns of 0-10%, three (21.4%) 11-20% and five (35.7%) greater than 20%, and one was unknown. Four (28.6%) showed airway lesions. Two (14.3%) patients died. Conclusion: The prevalence of burned HIV-positive patients admitted to a specialized unit for this treatment is like the national one, with similar characteristics concerning age and gender.

RESUMO Introdução: As anomalias craniofaciais são identificadas usualmente pela sua aparência. Ao longo do tempo, diversas escalas e classificações foram propostas a partir de aspectos clínicos e anatômicos. Em 1976, Tessier fez uma associação entre os tecidos moles e o ósseo subjacente. Com esse conceito, criou um sistema numeral a partir da órbita em sentido horário de 0 - que chamou de linha zero, uma linha vertical da face - a 14. Rara e com múltiplas apresentações, sua condução segue um desafio mesmo para profissionais mais experientes. Relato de Caso: Paciente feminina, submetida a rinoplastia aberta estruturada aos 15 anos de idade para correção de nariz bífido, utilizando cartilagem costal e técnica de tongue-in-groove. Discussão: O nariz bífido é uma das principais apresentações da fissura 0. A rinoplastia aberta estruturada já foi aplicada em outros trabalhos com grande sucesso, sendo a técnica tongue-in-groove especialmente útil para projeção e rotação da ponta nasal. Conclusão: As anomalias craniofaciais variam em suas apresentações e cabe ao cirurgião plástico identificar os problemas e propor soluções terapêuticas que amenizem essas alterações. Seu tratamento irá necessitar de uma avaliação pré-operatória completa, planejamento cirúrgico cuidadoso e técnica cirúrgica meticulosa.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Craniofacial anomalies are usually identified by their appearance. Over time, several scales and classifications were proposed based on clinical and anatomical aspects. In 1976, Tessier made an association between soft tissue and underlying bone. With this concept, he created a numeral system starting from the clockwise orbit of 0 - which he called the zero line, a vertical line of the face - to 14. Rare and with multiple presentations, its conduction is a challenge even for more experienced professionals. Case Report: Female patient who underwent open structured rhinoplasty at the age of 15 to correct a bifid nose, using costal cartilage and the tongue-in-groove technique. Discussion: Bifid nose is one of the main presentations of cleft 0. Structured open rhinoplasty has already been successfully applied in other studies, and the tongue-in-groove technique is especially useful for the projection and rotation of the nasal tip. Conclusion: Craniofacial anomalies vary in their presentations, and it is up to the plastic surgeon to identify the problems and propose therapeutic solutions that alleviate these changes. Their treatment will require a thorough preoperative assessment, careful surgical planning, and meticulous surgical technique.

ABSTRACT. We evaluated various sieving methods to estimate particle size (PS) and geometric standard deviation (GSD) of ground corn. The corn had been previously divided in six fractions and each one ground in a hammermill (1-, 2-, 3-, 4-, 5- or 12-mm sieves). The stacked sieving method, with prior drying at 105ºC without agitators was the reference. We evaluated eight sieving methods, distributed in a factorial design (2 x 2 x 2 x 6), consisting of the following treatments: i) with and without agitators (two 25-mm rubber spheres), ii) with and without previous drying, iii) with a nest of test sieves set in a stacked or reverse, and iv) employing six ground corn degrees, totaling 48 treatments (four replicates). There was a linear increase in PS estimation for methods without drying and stacking and quadratic increases for the others. Reverse, drying, and agitator methodologies gave better sieving of corn, and consequently gave the lowest PS and highest GSD. The results were more pronounced for high-intensity grinding (hammermill sieve with small apertures) in which the differences between the reference method with the drying and reverse methods were up to 210 µm. Reverse sieving combined with agitators allowed the greatest passage of corn particles through the test sieves and promoted better characterization of ground corn.

In this study, quantum-mechanical calculations in the framework of the Density Functional Theory (DFT) were performed to investigate the role of exchange-correlation functional in describing structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of ZnFe2O4. Herein B3LYP, PBE0, B1WC, and WC1LYP functionals implemented in the CRYSTAL17 code were considered due to the different amounts of the exact Hartree-Fock exchange fraction. In particular, the role of HF fraction on ZnFe2O4 properties was addressed for the first time. Indeed, structural, electronic, and magnetic properties indicate the dependence upon the exchange fraction, where WC1LYP with a 16% exact HF exchange exhibits the best performance compared to the other hybrid functionals. The obtained results reveal an excellent agreement for bandgap, local magnetic moment, long-range magnetic ordering, and unit-cell lattice parameters, overcoming previous theoretical studies based on local/semilocal exchange-correlation treatments. These results confirm the importance of hybrid HF/DFT with controlled HF term contribution to describe the essential features of strongly correlated materials.

ABSTRACT Objectives: Paraoxonase 1 (PON1) is an enzyme that has antioxidant potential, which confers a protective effect against the atherosclerotic process. However, studies associating genetics, dietary patterns and PON1 activity in individuals with cardiovascular disease (CVD) are scarce. Thus, the aim of the current study was to evaluate the influence of dietary factors on serum PON1 in CVD patients. Subjects and methods: Cross-sectional, sub-study of the BALANCE Program Trial. All patients aged 45 years or older and had evidence of established atherosclerotic disease in the preceding 10 years. Body weight, height, waist circumference, blood pressure, lipid profile and fasting glucose were collected. Food intake was assessed with 24-h dietary recall. Data was analyzed using SAS University Edition and a P value ≤ 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Sample was divided into three groups, according to the PON1 T(-107)C genotype (CC, CT and TT) and serum PON1 activity (Low, Medium, High). Results: There were no genotype differences for major factors. However, the systolic blood pressure was lower for CT individuals (p<0.05). Intake of cholesterol, saturated fatty acids (SFA) and monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAS) was higher in patients with lower PON1 activity. Lipid ingestion tended to be higher in patients with lower PON1 activity (p=0.08). In the multivariate logistic regression model, SFA intake (P=0.03), genotype (P=0.09), gender (P=0.04), age (P=0.07) and carbohydrate intake (P=0.16) contributed the most to the serum PON1 activity. Conclusion: Based on these findings, nutritional guidance for these patients becomes essential, since dietary components interact with serum PON1 activity more than genotype.

■ RESUMO Introdução: A mastoplastia de aumento primária é uma das principais cirurgias estéticas na rotina do cirurgião plástico. As várias técnicas de realização exigem estudo constante e formação ampla dos médicos residentes da especialidade. Métodos: Revisão de prontuários das pacientes submetidas a mastoplastias de aumento primária no Hospital das Clínicas da Faculdade de Medicina de Botucatu no período de 2017 a 2020. Resultados: 120 cirurgias foram realizadas no período analisado. Houve predomínio de implantes de projeção alta (75%) e em plano subfascial (67,5%). Houve ausência de complicações maiores, com grande parte das pacientes (75%) não apresentando nenhuma complicação menor (p<0,001). Conclusão: A mastoplastia de aumento é uma cirurgia segura quando realizada seguindo os cuidados técnicos adequados e sob supervisão, sendo um procedimento importante na formação do cirurgião plástico.

■ ABSTRACT Introduction: Primary augmentation mammoplasty is one of the main cosmetic surgeries in the plastic surgeon’s routine. The various performance techniques require constant study and extensive training of the specialty’s resident physicians. Methods: Review medical records of patients who underwent primary augmentation mammoplasty at the Hospital das Clínicas of the Faculdade de Medicina de Botucatu from 2017 to 2020. Results: 120 surgeries were performed during the period analyzed. There was a predominance of high-projection (75%) and subfascial (67.5%) implants. There were no major complications, with most patients (75%) not having any minor complications (p<0.001). Conclusion: Augmentation mammoplasty is a safe surgery when performed following proper technical care and under supervision.

Resumo Fundamento O aumento significativo de doenças cardiovasculares em países em desenvolvimento alerta sobre seu impacto em populações carentes. Objetivo Identificar a relação de agrupamentos de componentes da síndrome metabólica (SM) com aterosclerose e inflamação crônica em adultos e idosos. Métodos Análise transversal usando dados de dois estudos populacionais de tipo coorte realizados em Florianópolis, sul do Brasil (EpiFloripa Adult Cohort Study, n = 862, 39,9±11,5 anos; EpiFloripa Aging Cohort Study, n = 1197, 69,7±7,1 anos). Pressão arterial (PA), circunferência da cintura (CC), e níveis plasmáticos de lipídio e glicose foram analisados como fatores individuais ou como agrupamentos de componentes da SM (como número de componentes presentes em um indivíduo ou como combinações). Os desfechos incluíram espessura intima-media carotídea (EIMC), placas ateroscleróticas, e níveis de proteína C reativa (CRP). Regressão linear múltipla e regressão logística, ajustadas quanto aos fatores de confusão, foram usadas para análise. O nível de significância adotado foi de 5%. Resultados Indivíduos com PA e CC elevadas, dislipidemia e hiperglicemia (61,5%) apresentaram maiores valores de EIMC e PCR que aqueles que não apresentaram componentes de SM. CC elevada foi um determinante comum de inflamação sistêmica, ao passo que a coexistência de PA elevada e CC elevada (agrupamentos de dois ou três fatores) associou-se com maior EIMC (β entre +3,2 e +6,1 x 10-2 mm; p < 0,05) e PCR (EXPβ entre 2,18 e 2,77; p < 0,05). Conclusão A coexistência de PA e CC elevadas associou-se com maiores valores de EIMC e níveis de PCR. A obesidade central, isolada ou em combinação com outros fatores de risco, teve efeito sobre a inflamação sistêmica.

Abstract Background The significant increase in cardiovascular diseases in developing countries alerts about their impact on underprivileged populations. Objective To identify the relationship of clusters of metabolic syndrome (MS) components with atherosclerosis and chronic inflammation among adults and elderly. Methods Cross-sectional analysis using data from two population-based cohort studies in Florianópolis, Southern Brazil (EpiFloripa Adult Cohort Study, n = 862, 39.9±11.5 years; EpiFloripa Aging Cohort Study, n = 1197, 69.7±7.1 years). Blood pressure (BP), waist circumference (WC), and lipid and glucose levels were analyzed as individual factors or as clusters (either as the number of components present in an individual or as combinations of components). Outcomes included carotid intima-media thickness (IMT), atherosclerotic plaques, and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels. Multiple linear and logistic regression analyses adjusted for confounding factors were used. The statistical significance adopted was 5%. Results Individuals with high BP, elevated WC, dyslipidemia and hyperglycemia (6.1% of the sample) showed higher IMT and CRP than those negatives for all MetS components. Elevated WC was a common determinant of systemic inflammation, while the coexistence of high BP and elevated WC (clusters of two or three factors) was associated with higher IMT (β between +3.2 and +6.1 x 10-2 mm; p value < 0.05) and CRP (EXPβ between 2.18 and 2.77; p value < 0.05). Conclusion The coexistence of high BP and elevated WC was associated with increased IMT and CRP levels, but central obesity affected systemic inflammation either alone or in combination with other risk factors.

Abstract Cultivar RB036091 is an early-maturing sugarcane with a long period of industrial suitability; in the Central South region of Brazil, harvest is recommended between April and August, and the cultivar is indicated for planting on moderate to highly fertile soils. It is widely adaptable and has a high sugar yield and stability of agricultural yield.

RESUMO A expansão da cultura da cana-de-açúcar na região Centro-Sul tem sido predominantemente em solos arenosos com baixo potencial produtivo. Os objetivos deste trabalho foram avaliar a manutenção do palhiço, consórcio da cana com a braquiária e doses de nitrogênio no cultivo da cana em solo arenoso do Paraná. O experimento foi instalado em condições de campo, situado no município de Paranavaí-PR, na unidade da Rede Interinstitucional para o Desenvolvimento do Setor Sucroenergético (Ridesa). O solo foi classificado como sendo um Latossolo Vermelho-amarelo distrófico. Os tratamentos na cana-planta foram constituídos de um fatorial 4x2, sendo quatro doses de nitrogênio (0, 50, 100 e 150 kg ha-1) e cana consorciada e não consorciada com braquiária. Na ocasião da colheita da cana-planta, implementou-se o palhiço como novo fator para ser avaliado na cana-soca. Os tratamentos da cana-soca foram constituídos de um fatorial 4x2x2, sendo quatro doses de nitrogênio (0, 50, 100 e 150 kg ha-1), cana consorciada e não consorciada com braquiária, e uso do palhiço e o não uso do palhiço. A manutenção do palhiço na superfície do solo pode aumentar o desenvolvimento agronômico da cana e, por outro lado, o consórcio de capim braquiária pode reduzir. A cana-de-açúcar foi responsiva às doses de N e, nas maiores doses, compensou a ausência do palhiço e reduziu a competição entre as espécies.

ABSTRACT The expansion of sugarcane cultivation in the Center-South region of Brazil has led to the use of, mainly, areas with low-yielding sandy soils. In this context, the objectives of this study were to evaluate the maintenance of the sugarcane straw, Brachiaria grass intercropping in sugarcane fields and nitrogen fertilization and on sandy soils in the state of Paraná. The field experiment was installed in the Paranavaí-PR city, at a unit of the Interuniversity Network for the Development of the Sugarcane Sector (RIDESA). The soil was classified as Latossolo Vermelho-amarelo distrófico. The treatments in the plant cane stage, consisting of four nitrogen rates (0, 50, 100 and 150 kg ha-1) and monoculture or Brachiaria grass intercropping in sugarcane fields were arranged in a 4x2 factorial design. At plant cane harvest, the effect of unremoved straw was included as a new factor to be evaluated in the ratoon crops. The treatments in the ratoon crops were arranged in a 4x2x2 factorial design, consisting of four nitrogen rates (0, 50, 100 and 150 kg ha-1), monoculture or Brachiaria grass intercropping in sugarcane fields and the presence or removal sugarcane straw. The sugarcane straw on soil surface can increase the agronomic development of sugarcane and, the other hands, Brachiaria grass intercropping in sugarcane fields can reduce. Sugarcane was responsive to N rates and, in the highest rates, compensated the sugarcane straw absence and reduced Brachiaria grass intercropping competition.

Abstract: This study evaluated 24 patients with lung cancer (CA) and 23 individuals with no smoking history or cancer in the family and without respiratory disease in childhood (CO). Peripheral blood lymphocytes was used to perform alkaline comet assay and to assess DNA damage as well as to evaluate methyl methane sulfonate (MMS) DNA repair after one hour and three hours at 37 ºC. The percentage of residual damage (RD) after three hours of MMS treatment, for each patient was assessed. The majority of patients were in the CA group, male patients, former smokers, with a history of smoking for 15 years and without associated comorbidities. Alkaline and residual damages were higher in the CA group when compared to controls (alkaline damage P = 0.015 and RD P = 0.05). After one hour of MMS treatment the DNA damage of the CA increased indicating failure to repair it, compared to the controls, and after three hours DNA repair was observed in both groups. Patients with lung cancer are mostly men, former smokers and with more than 15 years of tobacco consumption, undergoing chemotherapy, have high rates of DNA damage and deficiency in their ability to repair against induced damage when compared to controls.
