O objetivo principal da mecânica estatística é relacionar a física microscópica regida pelas leis de Newton, ou então pela mecânica quântica, com a física macroscópica regida pelas leis da termodinâmica. Conceitos macroscópicos, tais como a temperatura, que não fazem sentido do ponto de vista microscópico, surgem na mecânica estatística como propriedades emergentes quando o número de partículas torna-se suficientemente grande. O sucesso da mecânica estatística em explicar e prever uma variedade de fenômenos macroscópicos motivou a aplicação de conceitos e métodos da física estatística ao estudo de sistemas complexos e redes complexas, inclusive em neurociência. Nosso objetivo neste trabalho é aplicar essa abordagem a um problema chave na neurociência: como entender quantitativamente os correlatos neurais de estados mentais alterados de consciência induzidos por substâncias psicodélicas? Vamos primeiro introduzir alguns conceitos básicos sobre a conectividade funcional das regiões do cérebro. Discutimos então a fenomenologia e a neurociência relacionadas aos psicodélicos. Finalmente, resumimos alguns estudos que aplicaram a física estatística e a teoria de redes complexas para tentar melhor entender o comportamento do cérebro sob influência dos psicodélicos.

The primary aim of statistical mechanics is to relate the micropscopic physics governed by Newton’s laws, or else by quantum mechanics, to the macroscopic physics governed by the laws of thermodynamics. Macroscopic properties, such as temperature, may have no meaning at the microscopic level, but they arise as emergent properties in statistical mechanics when the number of particles becomes sufficiently large. The success of statistical mechanics in explaining and predicting a variety of macroscopic phenomena has motivated the application of concepts and methods of statistical physics to study complex systems and complex networks, including in neuroscience. Our aim here is to apply this approach to a key problem in neuroscience: how can we quantitatively understand the neural correlates of altered mental states induced by psychedelic substances? We first give an overview of basic concepts concerning functional connectivity of brain regions. We then discuss the phenomenology and the neuroscience related to psychedelics. Finally, we review some studies that have applied statistical physics and the theory of complex networks to try to gain a better understanding of the brain under the influence of psychedelics.

Resumo É bem conhecido o paralelo exato entre o problema de um jogador que aposta dinheiro iterativamente em um jogo de azar e o de um caminhante aleatório em uma dimensão com uma parede absorvedora. Essa e outras conexões entre finanças e Física motivaram o surgimento, na década de 1990, da área de Econofísica. Como o assunto ainda é pouco conhecido no âmbito de cursos de graduação em Física, vimos primeiramente revisar alguns conceitos básicos relevantes, tais como martingale, derivativo financeiro e opções de ações. Focaremos em opções binárias (OB), que são derivativos financeiros. Os objetivos desse trabalho são: (i) mostrar como funcionam as OB; (ii) simular estocasticamente o comportamento da curva de saldo para diferentes taxas de acertos; (iii) realização de testes de taxa de sucesso do indicador chamado oscilador estocástico em séries temporais de dados financeiros históricos. Esse indicador é muito usado por operadores de OB, portanto é um exemplo ilustrativo ideal. Nossos resultados evidenciam que é difícil a lucratividade consistente, mesmo que se tente recuperar perdas aplicando estratégias baseadas em martingale ou alavancagem “soros”. Tal caracterização empírica dessa dificuldade ajuda a deixar mais claro a imprevisibilidade e o alto grau de complexidade do comportamento visto em mercados financeiros.

Abstract The analogy between the problem of a player who bets money iteratively in a game of chance and a random walker in one dimension with an absorbing boundary is well known. These and other connections between finance and physics motivated the emergence of the field of econophysics in the 1990s. Since the subject matter is still not well known at the level of undergraduate physics programs, here we first review some basic concepts, such as martingales, financial derivatives and stock options. Our objectives are the following: (i) to explain how binary options work; (ii) to simulate stochastically the behavior of the balance sheet curve for different hit rates; (iii) to run tests of the success rates for the stochastic oscillator indicator in financial time series of historical data. This indicator is widely used by binary option traders, so it is an ideal illustrative example. Our results show that it is difficult to obtain consistent profits, even using strategies based on martingales or “Soros” leveraging to recover previous losses. The empirical characterization of this difficulty may help to make clearer the unpredictability and high degree of complexity of the behavior seen in financial markets.

We apply the theory of random walks to quantitatively describe the general problem of how to search efficiently for randomly located objects that can only be detected in the limited vicinity of a searcher who typically has a finite degree of "free will" to move and search at will. We illustrate Lévy flight search processes by comparison to Brownian random walks and discuss experimental observations of Lévy ights in the special case of biological organisms that search for food sites. We review recent findings indicating that an inverse square probability density distribution P(<img SRC="http:/img/fbpe/bjp/v31n1/sele.gif">) ~ <img SRC="http:/img/fbpe/bjp/v31n1/sele.gif">-2 of step lengths <img SRC="http:/img/fbpe/bjp/v31n1/sele.gif">can lead to optimal searches. Finally we survey the explanations put forth to account for these surprising findings.
