Resumo O objetivo do presente trabalho foi avaliar índices de competição dependentes da distância e definir um raio de influência competitiva entre árvores em um fragmento de Mata Atlântica sob recuperação florestal. A área em estudo possui 2,53ha, na qual foi realizado o inventário com intensidade amostral de 15,81%. Avaliaram-se três índices de competição e vinte distâncias para o raio de competição (1, 2, 3... e 20 m). O índice IC3, que relaciona o DAP de árvores competidoras com a aquele da árvore objetivo multiplicado pela distância entre as mesmas somado a uma unidade, se mostrou o mais adequado para representar a competição. Esse índice se correlacionou mais fortemente com os atributos biométricos, apresentou fundamentação biológica e a menor variabilidade com o aumento do raio de competição. Os índices de competição e suas respectivas variabilidades tenderam à estabilização a partir do raio de competição de, aproximadamente, 6 m. Conclui-se que o índice IC3 e o raio de competição de 6m são indicados para análises sobre relações entre a competitividade e aspectos biométricos no local de estudo.

Abstract This research aimed to evaluate distance-dependent competition indices and defining a radius of competitive influence among trees in an Atlantic Forest fragment under forest recovery. The study area has 2.53 ha, in which the inventory was carried out with a sampling intensity of 15.81%. Three competition indices and twenty distances for the competition radius (1, 2, 3... and 20 m) were evaluated. IC3 index, which relates the DBH of competing trees with the target tree multiplied by the distance between them plus one unit, proved to be the most adequate to represent competition. This index was strongly correlated with biometric attributes, having biological support and the lowest variability when increasing the competition radius. Competition indices and their respective variability tended to stabilize from the competition radius at approximately 6 m. It is concluded that IC3 index and 6 m competition radius are suitable when analyzing the relationship between competitiveness and biometric attributes at the study site.

Resumo O objetivo do presente trabalho foi avaliar alternativas para a modelagem hipsométrica generalista de eucalipto via regressão linear, com a inclusão de índices de competição independentes da distância como variável preditora. Os dados utilizados foram provenientes de 34 parcelas distribuídas em quatro unidades de manejo florestal com 72 meses de idade. Calcularam-se 7 índices de competição independentes da distância. Avaliou-se o desempenho preditivo de 16 modelos hipsométricos generalistas, sendo propostos 14 modelos de dupla entrada (DAP e índice de competição). Todas as equações geradas foram biologicamente consistentes. Diante da ausência de informações da altura de árvores dominantes, a modelagem generalista pode ser melhor viabilizada com a inclusão do índice IC4, que representa a área basal de árvores vizinhas competidoras. Conclui-se que a inclusão de índices de competição em modelos hipsométricos ampliam a capacidade de generalização de equações para talhões de eucalipto com distintas capacidades produtivas. O índice de competição IC4 favorece a qualidade de ajuste e desempenho preditivo da modelagem hipsométrica nos sítios estudados.

Abstract This study aimed to evaluate alternatives for general hypsometric modeling of eucalypt through linear regression, with inclusion of distance-independent competition indices as a predictor variable. The data was collected from 34 plots distributed in four 72-month-old forest management units. Seven distance-independent competition indices were calculated. The study evaluated the predictive performance of 16 general hypsometric models, and 14 double-entry models (DAP and competition index) were proposed. All equations generated were biologically consistent. Given the lack of information on the height of dominant trees, general modeling can be better employed with inclusion of the IC4 index, which represents basal area of neighboring competing trees. It is concluded that the inclusion of competition indices in hypsometric models increases generalization capacity of equations for eucalyptus stands with different productive capacities. The IC4 competition index enhances fit quality and predictive performance of the hypsometric modeling in the study sites.

ABSTRACT Background: Approximately 71 million people are chronically infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV) worldwide. A significant number of these individuals will develop liver cirrhosis and/or hepatocellular carcinoma. Beyond the liver, there is a sizeable body of scientific evidence linking cardiovascular disease and chronic hepatitis C (CHC); however, the biological mechanisms behind the concurrence of these conditions have not been completely clarified yet. Objective: To evaluate associations between hepatic histology, clinical comorbidities and lipid profile in patients with CHC. To investigate associations between liver histology and demographic, nutritional, biochemical and virological parameters. Methods: Eight-five patients with CHC prospectively underwent hepatic biopsy. Liver fragments were obtained from each patient by percutaneous route using a Menghini needle. Fibrosis was evaluated according to the METAVIR scoring system, as follows: F0, no fibrosis; F1, fibrous portal expansion; F2, fibrous portal widening with few septa; F3, bridging fibrosis with architectural distortion; and F4, liver cirrhosis. The activity was classified based on the degree of lymphocyte infiltration and hepatocyte necrosis, from A0 to A3. The diagnosis of liver disease was based on clinical, biochemical, histological, and radiological methods. The data were analyzed by logistic regression models. Results: This cross-sectional study included 85 outpatients followed at the tertiary care ambulatory centre with a mean age of 57.2±10.7 years and 45 (52.9%) were females. There were 10 patients with cirrhosis. Patients with a METAVIR F3-F4 were significantly older (P=0.02) and had higher levels of ALT (P=0.0006), AST (P<0.0001), γ-GT (P=0.03) and bilirubin (P=0.001) and higher prothrombin time than patients with F0-F2 score. Albumin levels (P=0.01) were significantly lower in METAVIR F3-F4. Age (OR=1.09; 95%CI=1.02-1.16; P=0.02), steatosis (OR=4.03; 95%CI=1.05-15.45; P=0.04) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) <60 mg/dL (OR=7.67; 95%CI=1.71-34.49; P=0.008) were independently associated with fibrosis. Hypertension (OR=6.36; 95%CI=1.31-30.85; P=0.02) and HDL-C <60 mg/dL (OR=9.85; 95%CI=2.35-41.39; P=0.002) were independently associated with necroinflammatory activity. Hypertension (OR=6.94; 95%CI=1.92-25.05; P=0.003) and HDL-C <60 mg/dL (OR=3.94; 95%CI=1.27-12.3; P=0.02) were associated with interface inflammatory activity. Triglycerides (TG ≥150 mg/dL) remained associated with lobular inflammatory activity. Conclusion: cholesterol levels <60 mg/dL were independently associated with necroinflammatory activity in chronic hepatitis C. Patients with hypertension are at an increased risk of developing necroinflammatory activity.

RESUMO Contexto: Aproximadamente 71 milhões de pessoas estão infectadas pelo vírus da hepatite C em todo o mundo. Um número significativo desses indivíduos desenvolverá cirrose hepática e/ou carcinoma hepatocelular. Além do fígado, há evidências científicas que associam doenças cardiovasculares e hepatite C crônica; no entanto, os mecanismos biológicos implicados na ocorrência dessas condições ainda não foram completamente esclarecidos. Objetivo: Avaliar a associação entre histologia hepática, comorbidades clínicas e perfil lipídico em pacientes com hepatite C crônica. Investigar associações entre histologia hepática e parâmetros demográficos, nutricionais, bioquímicos e virológicos. Métodos: Oitenta e cinco pacientes com hepatite C crônica foram prospectivamente submetidos à biópsia hepática. Biópsias hepáticas foram obtidas de cada paciente por via percutânea com agulha de Menghini. A fibrose foi avaliada de acordo com o sistema de pontuação METAVIR, como segue: F0, sem fibrose; F1, expansão portal fibrosa; F2, alargamento portal fibroso com poucos septos; F3, fibrose em ponte com distorção arquitetônica; e F4, cirrose hepática. A atividade foi classificada com base no grau de infiltração de linfócitos e necrose de hepatócitos, de A0 a A3. O diagnóstico da doença hepática foi baseado em métodos clínicos, bioquímicos, histológicos e radiológicos. Os dados foram analisados por modelos de regressão logística. Resultados: Neste estudo transversal, realizado em um ambulatório do hospital universitário, foram incluídos 85 pacientes que tinham média de idade de 57,2±10,7 anos, sendo 45 (52,9%) do sexo feminino. Havia 10 pacientes com cirrose. Os pacientes com METAVIR F3-F4 eram significativamente mais velhos (P=0,02) e tinham níveis mais elevados de ALT (P=0,0006), AST (P<0,0001), γ-GT (P=0,03) e bilirrubina (P=0,001) e, maior tempo de protrombina do que pacientes com escore F0-F2. Os níveis de albumina (P=0,01) foram significativamente mais baixos naqueles classificados como METAVIR F3-F4. Idade (OR=1,09; IC95%=1,02-1,16; P=0,02), esteatose (OR=4,03; IC95%=1,05-15,45; P=0,04) e HDL-C <60 mg/dL (OR=7,67; 95%IC=1,71-34,49; P=0,008) foram independentemente associados à fibrose. Hipertensão (OR=6,36; IC95%=1,31-30,85; P=0,02) e HDL-C <60 mg/dL (OR=9,85; IC95%=2,35-41,39; P=0,002) foram independentemente associados à atividade necroinflamatória. Hipertensão (OR=6,94; IC 95%=1,92-25,05; P=0,003) e HDL-C <60 mg/dL (OR=3,94; IC95%=1,27-12,3; P=0,02) foram associados à atividade inflamatória de interface. Os triglicerídeos (TG >150 mg/dL) permaneceram associados à atividade inflamatória lobular. Conclusão: Níveis de coleterol HDL <60 mg/dL foram independentemente associados à atividade necroinflamatória na hepatite C crônica. Pacientes com hipertensão têm risco aumentado de desenvolver atividade necroinflamatória.

ABSTRACT Introduction: The Band 3 is a red blood cell protein that carries the Dia and Dib antigens from the Diego blood system. The SLC4A1 gene encodes Band 3; Band 3 Memphis is a polymorphism of normal Band 3 and has two variants, but only the variant II carries the Dia antigen. Objectives: Describe the frequencies of the DI*A and DI*B alleles and the Band 3 Memphis among blood donors, sickle cell disease (SCD) patients and Amazonian Indians. Methods: A total of 427 blood samples were collected and separated into three groups: 206 unrelated blood donors, 90 patients with SCD and 131 Amazonian Indians. We performed DI*A/B, normal Band 3 and Band 3 Memphis genotyping, using the Polymerase Chain Reaction Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (PCR–RFLP). Results: The frequency of the DI*A/DI*A genotype was 0.5% in blood donors and it was not found in other groups. The frequency of the DI*A/DI*B was higher in Amazonian Indians (33.6%) and the frequency of the DI*B/DI*B was highest in blood donors (92.2%). All 105 individuals tested were positive for the presence of normal Band 3 and of these individuals, only 5/105 (4.8%) presented the Band 3 Memphis mutation. Conclusion: We observed a higher frequency of the DI*B allele in blood donors and a low frequency of the DI*A/DI*A genotype in all groups studied. The Band 3 Memphis was found in a higher frequency in the blood donor group. Our findings highlight the importance of analyzing different population groups to gain a better understanding of the genetic association of blood group antigens.

RESUMO O manejo fisiológico e nutricional é uma prática importante para obtenção de mudas de alta qualidade e o uso de extrato de algas tem se tornado uma alternativa aos fertilizantes e bioestimulantes, mas informações para Alibertia edulis, uma espécie frutífera e nativa do Cerrado, são escassas. Objetivou-se com este trabalho avaliar o efeito de doses do extrato de alga Ascophyllum nodosum L. (ANE), associadas ou não ao nitrogênio mineral no crescimento, índices de eficiência do nutriente nitrogênio e na qualidade de mudas de A. edulis. As mudas receberam aplicação de cinco doses de ANE (0, 5, 10, 15 e 20 mL L-1 de água) via foliar, sem e com adição de N mineral (50 mg kg-1 de ureia ao solo). O delineamento utilizado foi o de blocos casualizados, e os tratamentos foram arranjados em esquema fatorial 5 × 2. Os dados de altura, diâmetro do coleto, número de folhas e o índice de clorofila ao longo do tempo foram analisados em parcelas subdivididas no tempo. A aplicação foliar do extrato de A. nodosum nas doses de 15 e 20 mL L-1, contribuiu para maiores características de crescimento e qualidade de mudas, independente do uso de nitrogênio mineral. Mudas com N mineral e com 13,98 mL L-1 de ANE tiveram maior área foliar. A maior eficiência e absorção de N e uso de nutrientes ocorreu nas mudas que receberam o extrato de alga A. nodosum.

ABSTRACT Physiological and nutritional management is an important practice for obtaining high quality seedlings. The use of seaweed extract has emerged as an alternative to fertilizers and biostimulants, although information on this with respect to Alibertia edulis, a fruit-bearing species native to the Cerrado region, is scarce. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of the Ascophyllum nodosum L. seaweed extract (ANE), both with and without the addition of mineral nitrogen, on the growth, nitrogen nutrient efficiency indices, and quality of A. edulis seedlings. The seedlings received five doses of ANE (0, 5, 10, 15, and 20 mL L-1 of water) via foliar application, with and without the addition of mineral N to the soil (50 mg kg-1 of urea). A randomized block design was used with the treatments arranged in a 5 × 2 factorial scheme. The plant height, stem diameter, chlorophyll index, and number of leaves obtained were analyzed in split-plots over time. Foliar application of 15 and 20 mL L-1 of ANE contributed to greater growth and seedling quality, regardless of the addition of mineral nitrogen. Seedlings treated with mineral N alongside 13.98 mL L-1 of ANE showed the greatest leaf area. The highest N use efficiency, N uptake, and nutrient use occurred in seedlings that received A. nodosum extract.

Abstract Most genetic diseases affect purebred animals and are inherited as recessive genes. Cranioschisis refers to dysraphism, which occurs in the midline of the skull due to failure to close the cranial symphysis, which can lead to herniation of the meninges filled with cerebrospinal fluid (meningocele), where there is usually a projection of the meningeal tissue. Diagnosis is performed based on clinical examination, characteristic anatomopathological data, and complementary imaging tests. The surgical approach for correction of cranioschisis is the only described as a therapeutic solution and is indicated in cases in which the cranial synthesis defect does not allow for brain protrusion and there is only the occurrence of meningocele, in addition to the absence of severe signs of neurological alteration. This paper reports a case of the use of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) plaque to treat cranioschisis associated with meningocele in a Girolando heifer. The surgical opening of the frontonasal sacculation allowed draining a total liquid content of 488 mL, inspection, and suture of the envelope membrane. APMMA plaque, molded to the bone surface and anchored in the adjacent soft tissue, was used to cover the evidenced frontonasal bone opening. Despite the unfavorable prognosis of the disease, the cranioplasty surgery for the treatment of cranioschisis associated with meningocele using PMMA plaque obtained satisfactory results relative to the quality and maintenance of this animal’s life, evaluated at 19 months postoperatively.

Resumo A maioria das doenças genéticas acometem animais de raça pura e herdados como genes recessivos.Acraniosquise refere-se à disrafia, que acontece na linha média do crânio pelo não fechamento da sínfise craniana, podendo levar a herniação das meninges repletas de líquido cefalorraquidiano (meningocele), onde geralmente existe projeção do tecido meningeal. O diagnóstico é realizado a partir do exame clínico, dados anatomopatológicos característicos e através da realização de exames complementares de imagem. Como solução terapêutica, a abordagem cirúrgica para correção das craniosquises é a única descrita, e é indicada em casos em que o defeito de síntese craniana não permita a protrusão encefálica e exista a ocorrência apenas da meningocele, além da inexistência de sinais graves de alteração neurológica. O artigo relata um caso de uso de placa de polimetilmetacrilato (PMMA) no tratamento de craniosquise associada à meningocele em uma bezerra Girolando. Instituiu-se a abertura cirúrgica da saculação fronto-nasal, permitindo a drenagem de conteúdo líquido total de 488 mL, inspeção e rafia de membrana envoltória. Para recobrimento da abertura óssea fronto-nasal evidenciada, utilizou-se uma placa de polimetilmetacrilato (PMMA), moldada à superfície óssea e ancorada em tecido mole adjacente. Concluiu-se que, apesar do prognóstico desfavorável da enfermidade, a cirurgia de cranioplastia para tratamento de craniosquise associada à meningocele, com a utilização de placa de PMMA, neste caso, obteve resultados satisfatórios em relação a qualidade e manutenção da vida deste animal, avaliando-se em 19 meses pós-operatório.

Abstract The present work evaluated the agronomic behavior of species and varieties of Pleurotus submitted or not to the scratching technique. The cultivated species/varieties were Pleurotus ostreatus and Pleurotus ostreatus var. Florida, and Pleurotus djamor, where half of the treatments were scratched before the first and second flushes, while the rest were only scratched before the second flush. Yield (%), biological efficiency (%), weight of mushroom (g) and number of mushrooms (uni) were evaluated. It was observed that scratching harmed the mushroom weight for P. ostreatus, where the treatment without scratching produced significantly higher values, in the first harvest flush. On the other hand, scratching favored yield and the number of mushrooms for P. djamor. When the species are compared, it is noted that P. ostreatus obtained a lower yield, which was also reflected in the biological efficiency. P. djamor stood out with a large number of mushrooms, statistically higher than the other species, on the other hand, producing mushrooms of low weight of mushroom. The use of the scratched technique is not recommended for the conditions used in the work, due to the increase in labor and loss of mushroom weight.

Resumo O objetivo deste estudo é identificar as variáveis que influenciam a repetição de curso de Ensino Obrigatório na Espanha de acordo com a literatura científica. Foi realizada uma revisão sistemática nas bases de dados Web of Science, Scopus e Dialnet, e por meio da análise de conteúdo foram identificadas 67 variáveis que foram incorporadas a um modelo estruturado em seis fatores correspondentes a dois grupos: não acadêmico (individuais e familiares) e acadêmicos (estudantes, companheiros, professores e centro educacional). Conclui-se que o diagnóstico destas variáveis pode contribuir para o desenho de medidas de ação (prevenção e intervenção) ajustadas às necessidades de cada aluno. Além disso, o elevado peso das variáveis familiares, tanto no estudante como no contexto do centro educacional, reforça a necessidade de procurar sinergias entre a política educativa e social para apoiar às famílias mais desfavorecidas.

Abstract The aim of this study is to identify variables that influence grade repetition in compulsory education in Spain, according to the scientific literature. A systematic review was carried out in the Web of Science, Scopus, and Dialnet databases, and content analysis was employed to identify 67 variables that were incorporated into a model structured into six factors that fell into two groups: non-academic (individual and family) and academic (student, classmates, teachers, and school). The study concludes that a diagnosis of these variables may help to design measures (for prevention and intervention) adapted to the needs of each student. Furthermore, the considerable weight carried by family variables, both in the student and in the school context, reinforces the need to seek synergies between education and social policy to support the most disadvantaged families.

Resumen El objetivo de este estudio es identificar las variables que influyen en la repetición de curso en Educación Obligatoria en España según la literatura científica. Se realizó una revisión sistemática en las bases de datos Web of Science, Scopus y Dialnet, y mediante análisis de contenido se identificaron 67 variables que fueron incorporadas a un modelo estructurado en seis factores correspondientes a dos grupos: no académicos (individuales y familiares) y académicos (estudiante, compañeros de clase, profesorado y centro educativo). Se concluye que el diagnóstico de estas variables puede contribuir al diseño de medidas de actuación (prevención e intervención) ajustadas a las necesidades de cada estudiante. Además, el elevado peso de las variables familiares, tanto en el estudiante como en el contexto del centro educativo, refuerza la necesidad de buscar sinergias entre la política educativa y la social para apoyar a las familias más desfavorecidas.

Abstract The Amazon Basin stands out mainly for its large floodplain’s areas, which during the period of high water become important environments for the maintenance of the life cycle of many fish species. These floodplains act as a source of food and an area for growth and reproduction for the fish assemblages. However, there are few studies on the use of floodplain lakes for breeding fish in confinement. Therefore, we analyzed the support capacity and environmental parameters of Lake Cujubim, in the Madeira River Basin, regarding its use for the implementation of intensive fish farming (net tank system). From 2019 to 2020, bathymetric profiles and limnological data were collected, considering the seasonality of the water level and the shape of the Lake Cujubim. The bathymetry data were primarily used to verify the parameters of depth, area and volume of the lake, while limnological data contributed to statistical analyses for the evaluation of health status and support capacity of the lake for fish farming in an intensive production system. The data collected from the limnological analyses and the depth and profile indicate that Lake Cujubim is suitable for the cultivation of fish, and has an estimated support capacity for an annual production of up to 468.31 tonnes of fish. Herein, we propose a viable alternative for the social and productive development of intensive fish farming in an area of floodplain lake in the state of Rondônia, Brazil.

Resumo A bacia Amazônica se destaca principalmente por suas extensas áreas alagadas, que durante o período de cheia se tornam importantes ambientes para a manutenção do ciclo de vida de muitas espécies de peixes. Esta planície de inundação atua como fonte de alimento e área para o crescimento e reprodução para as assembleias de peixes. No entanto, existem poucos estudos sobre o uso dos lagos de várzeas para a criação de peixes em cativeiro. Todavia, aqui analisamos a capacidade de suporte e os parâmetros ambientais do lago Cujubim, na bacia do rio Madeira, visando o seu uso para a implementação da criação intensiva de peixes (sistemas de tanques rede). No período de 2019 a 2020 foram realizados perfis batimétricos e coleta de dados limnológicos, considerando a sazonalidade do nível da água e a forma do lago Cujubim. Os dados da batimetria foram primordiais para verificar os parâmetros de profundidade, área e volume do lago, enquanto que os dados limnológicos contribuíram com as análises estatísticas para a avaliação do estado de sanidade e capacidade de suporte para criação de peixes em sistema intensivo de produção. Os dados coletados, das análises limnológicas e do perfil de profundidade, indicaram que o lago Cujubim é apropriado para a criação de peixes, e tem uma capacidade de suporte estimada de 468,31 toneladas de peixes por ano. Dessa forma, propomos aqui uma alternativa social e viável para o desenvolvimento da piscicultura intensiva em área de lago de várzea no estado de Rondônia, Brasil.

Abstract: The objective of this study was to evaluate the quality of milk and cheese and sensory analysis of cheese from goats that received a diet with different levels of sorghum silage in the diet. Twenty Anglonubian dairy goats were used, with an average age of 2 years, average live weight of 43.7 kg, distributed in a completely randomized design, with five replications. Moisture (P=0.001), total solids (P=0.001), fat (p=0.001), TDE (P=0.006) and protein (P=0.003) of goat cheese showed a significant difference due to the inclusion of silage from goat cheese. sorghum in the diet. The sensory attributes soft appearance (P<.0001), look (P<.0001), salty taste (P<.0001) and smooth texture (P=0.0430) showed a significant difference depending on the level of sorghum silage added to the diet. of goats. In the PC analysis, it is observed that three main components were needed to represent the variation of 64.84% of the data. PC 1 determined 29% of the data variation and was represented by the attributes with the highest averages: attractive aroma (5.87) and global acceptability (7.74). The inclusion of up to 45% of sorghum silage in the diet of goats increased milk and cheese fat, which favored high scores for the attributes of softness and global acceptance.

Abstract Raphidascarid nematodes have been the focus of several studies, mainly due to the zoonotic potential of some species, even though the cases are underreported. Due to the difficulty in identifying their larvae, the use of diagnostic techniques involving morphological and molecular analyses has grown in the last 20 years. The present study had as objective the morphological and molecular characterization of the L3 larval types of Hysterothylacium collected in Pomatomus saltatrix and Pagrus pagrus from the Brazilian coast, close to the municipality of Santos, State of São Paulo. Twenty specimens of P. saltatrix were necropsied and Hysterothylacium type V (n = 257) and Hysterothylacium type X (n = 5) larvae were found. Five specimens of P. pagrus were necropsied and all were parasitized by Hysterothylacium type V larvae. The analyses showed a genetic proximity relationship between Hysterothylacium types V with other Hysterothylacium V and with H. deardorffoverstreetorum, although this is a species inquirenda. Haplotypes for Hysterothylacium type X found in the present study formed a monophyletic group with other Hysterothylacium X, H. amoyense, and H. zhoushanense. Through this study, new hosts and localities were registered for Hysterothylacium type V and Hysterothylacium type X.

ABSTRACT Background: Chagas disease (CD) is caused by Trypanosoma cruzi and transmitted by triatomines. Historical information from the 20th century demonstrates T. cruzi records in the metropolitan region of Salvador (MRS), the third largest urban agglomeration in the Brazilian Northeast and the eighth largest in Brazil, an area with intense migratory activity from CD-endemic regions. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate CD indicators (prevalence and mortality) in the MRS. Methods: A mixed ecological and descriptive study was conducted using secondary data. We analyzed data from 2008 to 2015: deaths due to CD, self-reported cases of CD, and blood donors that were non-negative for T. cruzi infection. Results: São Francisco do Conde was one of the municipalities with the highest mortality rates due to CD. The seroprevalence rates varied by year and municipality; those with the highest values were 2008: Vera Cruz, 2009: Mata de São João, 2010: Dias D'Ávila, 2011 and 2015: São Francisco do Conde, 2012: São Sebastião do Passé, and 2013 and 2014: Pojuca. Spatial correlations between the municipalities were not detected. Conclusions: We conclude that CD is present in the MRS. The indicators analyzed in the MRS are below-state-level data. Given the importance of indicator analysis for the surveillance and control of CD at the state and national levels, it is important to strengthen the surveillance program at the municipal level, including the regions classified as low risk for T. cruzi vector transmission.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study is to report an unusual case of actinomycosis in the maxilla region of an asymptomatic patient. A 21-year-old white man was referred for the analysis of panoramic radiography and cone beam computed tomography, where it was observed the presence of a hypodense lesion on the left side of the maxilla, which extended from the maxillary left central incisor to the region of the maxillary left second premolar. During intraoral examination, a depression was observed in the hard palate mucosa, as well as a fistula in the alveolar mucosa close to maxillary left central incisor, which had pulp vitality confirmed by thermal tests. A fistulography was performed, with periapical radiography, where it was found that the fistulous path did not originate from the tooth mentioned above. An incisional biopsy was performed for diagnostic purposes. However, given the inconclusive microscopic findings, four months later, a new biopsy was performed. The histopathological examination revealed the presence of a colony of microoganisms with filamentous pattern of radiated rosette, surrounded by polymorphonuclear inflammatory cells. Based on the morphological characteristics, the diagnosis of actinomycosis was established. The treatment was based on antibiotic therapy. Six months after treatment of the infection, no signs of recurrence were observed, and the patient remains in follow-up. Actinomycosis in the maxilla is an uncommon infection with a predilection for males between the ages of 20 and 60, whose treatment is antibiotic therapy associated or not with surgical excision.

RESUMO O objetivo deste estudo é relatar um caso incomum de actinomicose em região de maxila de um paciente assintomático. Um homem de 21 anos, branco, foi encaminhado para análise de radiografia panorâmica e tomografia computadorizada de feixe cônico, onde foi observada a presença de lesão hipodensa do lado esquerdo da maxila, que se estendia da região do incisivo central superior esquerdo ao segundo pré-molar superior esquerdo. Ao exame intrabucal, observou-se depressão na mucosa do palato duro, bem como fístula na mucosa alveolar próxima ao incisivo central superior esquerdo, no qual tinha vitalidade pulpar confirmada pelos testes térmicos. Uma fistulografia com radiografia periapical foi realizada, onde foi observado que o trajeto fistuloso não era originado do dente mencionado anteriormente. Foi realizada biópsia incisional para fins diagnósticos. Porém, diante dos achados microscópicos inconclusivos, quatro meses depois, uma nova biópsia foi realizada. O exame histopatológico revelou a presença de colônia de microrganismos com padrão filamentoso de roseta irradiada, circundado por células inflamatórias polimorfonucleares. Com base nas características morfológicas, foi estabelecido o diagnóstico de actinomicose. O tratamento foi baseado em antibioticoterapia. Seis meses após o tratamento da infecção, não foram observados sinais de recidiva e o paciente permanece em acompanhamento. A actinomicose da maxila é uma infecção incomum, com predileção por pacientes do sexo masculino com idade entre 20 e 60 anos, cujo tratamento é antibioticoterapia associada ou não à excisão cirúrgica.

ABSTRACT Objective: The spinous process separation technique is a less invasive surgical technique for treating lumbar canal stenosis. The objective is to evaluate this technique’s results in treating lumbar canal stenosis. Method: Thirty patients with lumbar spinal canal stenosis underwent surgical treatment using the spinous process separation technique and were evaluated in the 3-year postoperative period using the Denis Pain and Work Scale and by the SF-36 questionnaire and radiographic evaluation of the operated segment. Results: In the evaluation of the Denis pain scale, 21 (70%) patients had no pain (P1), and nine (30%) patients reported minimal low back pain, not needing medication (P2). Denis’ work schedule showed that nine (30%) patients had restrictions on returning to their previous work activity (W2), and 21 (70%) patients were classified as W1. The SF-36 questionnaire showed results of 81.25 for physical aspects (PA), 81.9 for functional capacity (FC), 81.3 for emotional aspects (EA), 64.3 for vitality (V), 65.9 for mental health (MH), 81.98 for social aspects (SA), 75.6 for pain (P) and 68.1 for general health status (GHS). In addition, there were no radiographic signs of instability of the operated vertebral segment in the radiographic evaluation. Conclusion: The decompression of the lumbar spinal canal using the spinous process separation technique showed good results in the evaluated patients three years after the operation. Resumen: Objetivo: La técnica de separación de la apófisis espinosa es una técnica quirúrgica menos invasiva para el tratamiento de la estenosis del canal lumbar. El objetivo es evaluar los resultados de esta técnica en el tratamiento de la estenosis del canal lumbar. Método: Treinta pacientes con estenosis del conducto raquídeo lumbar fueron intervenidos quirúrgicamente mediante la técnica de separación de la apófisis espinosa, y fueron evaluados en el postoperatorio de tres años mediante la Escala de Dolor y Trabajo de Denis, mediante el cuestionario SF-36 y evaluación radiográfica del segmento operado. Resultados: En la evaluación de la escala de dolor de Denis, 21 (70%) pacientes no presentaron dolor (P1) y nueve (30%) pacientes refirieron dolor lumbar mínimo, sin necesidad de medicación (P2). La escala de trabajo de Denis mostró que nueve (30%) pacientes tenían restricciones para regresar a su actividad laboral anterior (W2) y 21 (70%) pacientes fueron clasificados como W1. El cuestionario SF-36 arrojó resultados 81,25 para aspectos físicos (AF), 81,9 para capacidad funcional (CF), 81,3 para aspectos emocionales (AE), 64,3 para vitalidad (V), 65,9 para salud mental (SM), 81,98 para aspectos sociales (AS), 75,6 para dolor (D) y 68,1 para estado general de salud (EGS). No hubo signos radiográficos de inestabilidad del segmento vertebral intervenido en la evaluación radiográfica. Conclusión: La descompresión del canal espinal lumbar mediante la técnica de separación de apófisis espinosa mostró buenos resultados en la evaluación de un período de 3 años después de la operación de los pacientes evaluados.

O objetivo é avaliar os resultados dessa técnica no tratamento da estenose do canal lombar. Método: Trinta pacientes portadores de estenose do canal vertebral lombar foram submetidos ao tratamento cirúrgico por meio da técnica da separação do processo espinhoso, tendo sido avaliados no período de três anos de pós-operatório, por meio da escala de dor e de trabalho de Denis, pelo questionário SF-36 e avaliação radiográfica do segmento operado. Resultados: Na avaliação da escala de dor de Denis, 21 (70%) pacientes não apresentavam dor (P1) e nove (30%) pacientes relataram dor mínima lombar, não necessitando medicação (P2). A escala de trabalho de Denis evidenciou que nove (30%) pacientes apresentavam restrições ao retorno à atividade prévia de trabalho (W2) e 21 (70%) pacientes foram classificados como W1. O questionário SF-36 apresentou resultados 81,25 para aspectos físicos (AF), 81,9 para capacidade funcional (CF), 81,3 para aspectos emocionais (AE), 64,3 para vitalidade(V), 65,9 para saúde mental (SM), 81,98 para aspectos sociais (AS), 75,6 para dor (D) e 68,1 para estado geral de saúde (EGS). Não foram observados sinais radiográficos de instabilidade do segmento vertebral operado na avaliação radiográfica. Conclusão: A descompressão do canal vertebral lombar por meio da técnica de separação do processo espinhoso apresentou bons resultados na avaliação num período de três anos de pós-operatório dos pacientes avaliados. Abstract The aim of the present study was to analyze the effect of two different types of resistance training programming (linear and daily undulating) on submaximal strength and functional capacity in elderly women. Twenty-two participants (64 ± 3 years) were randomly assigned to 2 training groups: linear programming (LP; n=12) and daily undulating programming (DUP; n =10). Functional capacity and submaximal strength (10RM) were analyzed before and after 12 weeks of resistance training. The results demonstrated improvement on strength and functional capacity after the resistance training period (p ≤ 0.05), except for the Bench Press (p = 0.30), for both groups DUP and LP. The Effect Size was, respectively, high for DUP (timed up and go test = -2.07, and timed sit test= 4.69), and high for LP (horizontal leg press = 2.35). For all other results, the effect size was trivial or small. No statistical difference was observed between programming models. The LP and DUP trainnings have similar results in increasing submaximal muscle strength in elderly women inexperienced in RT after 12 weeks of intervention (p ≤ 0,05). However, DUP appears to be more effective in increasing functional capacity. In practice, the professional can use both the LP and the DUP to improve the level of fitness in the early stages of training in this population. However, when the goal of programming is to increase functional capacity, DUP can be prioritized.

Resumo O objetivo do presente estudo foi analisar o efeito de dois tipos diferentes de programação do treinamento de força (linear e ondulatório diário) na força submáxima e na capacidade funcional de mulheres idosas. Vinte e duas participantes (64 ± 3 anos) foram randomizados em 2 grupos experimentais: programação linear (PL; n=12) e programação ondulatória diária (POD; n=10). A capacidade funcional e a força submáxima (10RM) foram avaliadas antes e depois das 12 semanas de treinamento de força. Os resultados demonstraram melhora da força submáxima e da capacidade funcional após o período de treinamento (p ≤ 0,05), exceto para o exercício supino (p = 0,30), para ambos os grupos POD e PL. Foi encontrado um tamanho de efeito grande para a POD nos testes de sentar e caminhar = -2,07 e teste de sentar e levantar = 4,69, bem como na PL para o exercício leg press horizontal = 2,35. Não foi observada diferença estatística entre os modelos de programação. As programações LP e DUP têm resultados semelhantes no aumento da força muscular submáxima em mulheres idosas inexperientes em TR após 12 semanas de intervenção (p ≤ 0,05). No entanto, o DUP parece ser mais eficaz para aumentar a capacidade funcional. Na prática, o profissional pode usar tanto o LP quanto o DUP para melhorar o nível de condicionamento físico nos estágios iniciais do treinamento nessa população. Porém, quando o objetivo da programação é aumentar a capacidade funcional, o DUP pode ser priorizado.
