AIM: to describe the methodology used in the study, the sample and the prevalence of symptoms in the acute phase of the infection according to socioeconomic variables. METHODS: cross-sectional study carried out in Rio Grande with individuals infected with covid-19 from December 2020 to March 2021. Nineteen symptoms present during the acute phase of the infection were investigated and analyzed, separately and in categories of “0-4”, “5-9” and “10 or more”, according to gender, age and economic class. RESULTS: 2,919 people were part of the sample. The most prevalent symptoms were fatigue (73.7%), headache (67.2%), loss of taste (65.9%), loss of smell (63.9%) and muscle pain (62.3% ). Regarding the occurrence of symptoms stratified by gender, all symptoms, except productive cough, were statistically higher in females. Regarding age, it was found that headache, pain/discomfort to breathe, loss of taste, loss of smell, fatigue, sore throat, nasal congestion, diarrhea, joint pain and muscle pain were statistically higher among adults (18 -59 years). As for economic class, the prevalence of symptoms of shortness of breath, pain/discomfort in breathing, alteration in sensitivity and joint pain showed a linear increase with the reduction in economic class. CONCLUSION: the results of this study made it possible to identify the most frequent symptoms in the acute phase of covid-19 and their distribution in groups, providing data for the implementation of public policies by managers and support for health professionals in assisting this population.

OBJETIVO: descrever a metodologia utilizada no estudo, a amostra e a prevalência dos sintomas da fase aguda da infecção de acordo com variáveis socioeconômicas. MÉTODOS: estudo transversal realizado em Rio Grande com indivíduos infectados pela covid-19 no período de dezembro de 2020 a março de 2021. Foram investigados 19 sintomas presentes durante a fase aguda da infecção e analisados, em separado e em categorias de “0-4”, “5-9” e “10 ou mais”, de acordo com sexo, idade e classe econômica. RESULTADOS: 2.919 pessoas fizeram parte da amostra. Os sintomas mais prevalentes foram fadiga (73,7%), dor de cabeça (67,2%), perda de paladar (65,9%), perda de olfato (63,9%) e dores musculares (62,3%). Com relação a ocorrência de sintomas estratificado por sexo, todos os sintomas, exceto tosse produtiva, foram estatisticamente maiores no sexo feminino. Referente à idade, verificou-se que dor de cabeça, dor/desconforto para respirar, perda de paladar, perda de olfato, fadiga, dor de garganta, congestão nasal, diarreia, dores articulares e dores musculares foram estatisticamente maiores entre os adultos (18-59 anos). Quanto a classe econômica, a prevalência dos sintomas falta de ar, dor/desconforto para respirar, alteração de sensibilidade e dores articulares apresentaram aumento linear conforme a redução da classe econômica. CONCLUSÃO: os resultados deste estudo permitiram identificar os sintomas mais frequentes na fase aguda da covid-19 e sua distribuição nos grupos, fornecendo dados para implementação de políticas públicas pelos gestores e respaldo para os profissionais de saúde na assistência a essa população.

RESUMO: A Araucaria angustifolia caracteriza as Florestas Ombrófilas mistas. Este pinheiro do Paraná tem tido grande importância econômica, cultural e social para o Sul do Brasil. Seu corte está restrito, pois está ameaçada de extinção e o uso de sua semente tem sido incentivado. Este estudo destaca as pesquisas científicas sobre esta conífera por análise bibliométrica e revisa as tendências de novas pesquisas sobre sua semente e algumas de suas aplicações alimentícias. A base de dados Web of Science© revelou 620 artigos científicos e a análise bibliométrica por meio do VOSviewer demonstrou o interesse mundial em ascendência. O aumento das pesquisas nas áreas de silvicultura, fitociência e ecologia refletem à preocupação com a preservação das Matas das Araucárias. Concomitantemente, pesquisas em ciência e tecnologia de alimentos têm aumentado, pois a semente de pinhão pode produzir uma farinha alimentar rica em amido com baixa resposta glicêmica e fonte de fibra dietética e de alguns minerais. Ainda, junto com sua casca, disponibilizar compostos bioativos com potencial de aplicação nas indústrias de alimento especial, de embalagem ativa/inteligente e reforçada e, até mesmo, farmacológica.

ABSTRACT: Araucaria angustifolia characterizes mixed Ombrophilous Forests. This Paraná pine tree has been of great economic, cultural and social importance for southern Brazil. Its cutting is restricted, as it is threatened with extinction and the use of its seed has been encouraged. This study highlights scientific research on this conifer by bibliometric analysis and reviews trends in new research on its seed and some of its food applications. The Web of Science© database revealed 620 scientific articles and the bibliometric analysis through VOSviewer showed the worldwide interest in growing. The increase in research in the areas of silviculture, phytoscience and ecology reflects the concern with the preservation of “Matas das Araucárias”. Concurrently, research in food science and technology has increased, as pine nut seed can produce starch-rich food flour with low glycemic response and source of dietary fiber and some minerals. Also, along with its husk, provide bioactive compounds with potential application in the special food, active/smart and reinforced packaging and even pharmacological industries.

ABSTRACT Background: Chagas disease (CD) is caused by Trypanosoma cruzi and transmitted by triatomines. Historical information from the 20th century demonstrates T. cruzi records in the metropolitan region of Salvador (MRS), the third largest urban agglomeration in the Brazilian Northeast and the eighth largest in Brazil, an area with intense migratory activity from CD-endemic regions. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate CD indicators (prevalence and mortality) in the MRS. Methods: A mixed ecological and descriptive study was conducted using secondary data. We analyzed data from 2008 to 2015: deaths due to CD, self-reported cases of CD, and blood donors that were non-negative for T. cruzi infection. Results: São Francisco do Conde was one of the municipalities with the highest mortality rates due to CD. The seroprevalence rates varied by year and municipality; those with the highest values were 2008: Vera Cruz, 2009: Mata de São João, 2010: Dias D'Ávila, 2011 and 2015: São Francisco do Conde, 2012: São Sebastião do Passé, and 2013 and 2014: Pojuca. Spatial correlations between the municipalities were not detected. Conclusions: We conclude that CD is present in the MRS. The indicators analyzed in the MRS are below-state-level data. Given the importance of indicator analysis for the surveillance and control of CD at the state and national levels, it is important to strengthen the surveillance program at the municipal level, including the regions classified as low risk for T. cruzi vector transmission.

RESUMO: A Ilex paraguariensis é uma espécie nativa do Brasil, Paraguai e Argentina, valorizada por seus efeitos positivos na saúde humana. O processamento do mate consiste nas seguintes etapas: pré-secagem (secagem rápida em alta temperatura, conhecida como operação de sapeco), secagem e moagem. A fim de verificar o atual processo e propor melhorias futuras no processamento de mate, foram aplicadas análises térmicas e de balanço de massa em unidades industriais de processamento de mate. Os resultados mostraram que o consumo de energia nas operações de sapeco e secagem supera o aporte calorífico necessário para essas operações. Esses resultados comprovam a necessidade de uma mudança no gerenciamento das temperaturas nas etapas de sapeco e secagem do processamento da erva-mate, a fim de otimizar o consumo de energia, resultando em menores custos, com efeitos positivos na qualidade dos produtos da erva-mate.

ABSTRACT: The Ilex paraguariensis is a species native to Brazil, Paraguay and Argentine, valued by its positive effects on human health. Mate processing consists of the following stages: pre-drying (rapid drying at high temperature, known as sapeco operation), drying, and milling. In order to verify the current process and to propose future improvements to the mate processing, thermal and mass balance analysis were applied to industrial mate processing units. Results showed that the consumption of energy in sapeco and drying operations exceeds the calorific input necessary for these operations. These results verify the need for a change in the management of temperatures in the sapeco and drying stages of mate processing in order to optimize the consumption of energy, resulting in lower costs, with positive effects on the quality of the mate products.

ABSTRACT Handroanthus impetiginosus is a Brazilian native tree threatened by illegal logging that needs conservation strategies. Due to the need to obtain seeds of high genetic and physiological quality, this study aimed to select mother trees, aiming at the installation of Seed Collection Areas of H. impetiginosus. Therefore, the genetic diversity and physiological quality of seeds from 63 individuals of a natural population of H. impetiginosus in Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, were evaluated. The molecular markers revealed that the studied population has high intrapopulation genetic diversity (Nei’s genetic diversity = 0.35; and Shannon index = 0.52). Subsequently, germination and seed vigor tests evaluated the physiological quality of seeds from 63 trees. Of this total, 45 individuals produced seeds of high and intermediate physiological quality. Therefore, individuals with a Nei’s genetic distance < 0.72 and germination greater than 50% can be selected as mother trees, and the population has the potential to propose a Seed Collection Area.

RESUMO Handroanthus impetiginosus é uma árvore nativa brasileira ameaçada pela exploração ilegal de madeira e necessita de estratégias para fins de conservação. Devido à necessidade de obtenção de sementes de alta qualidade genética e fisiológica, objetivou-se com este estudo selecionar árvores matrizes, visando a instalação de Áreas de Coleta de Sementes (ACS) de H. impetiginosus: Para tanto, avaliou-se a diversidade genética e a qualidade fisiológica das sementes de 63 indivíduos de uma população natural localizada no estado do Rio Grande do Norte, Brasil. O conjunto de marcadores moleculares revelou que a população estudada apresenta grau intermediário de diversidade genética intrapopulacional (diversidade genética de Nei = 0,35; índice de Shannon = 0,52). Posteriormente, foi avaliada a qualidade fisiológica das sementes por meio de testes de germinação e de vigor de sementes. Deste total, 45 indivíduos produziram sementes de qualidade fisiológica alta e intermediária. Assim, os indivíduos com identidade genética de Nei < 0,72 e germinação superior a 50% podem ser selecionados como árvores matrizes e a população apresenta potencial para proposição de uma ACS.

Abstract This study investigated the impact of a modified implant macrogeometry on peri-implant healing and its effect on bone-related molecules in rats. Eighteen rats received one implant in each tibia: the control group received implants with conventional macrogeometry and the test group received implants with modified macrogeometry. After 30 days, the implants were removed for biomechanical analysis and the bone tissue around them was collected for quantifying gene expression of OPN, Runx2, β-catenin, BMP-2, Dkk1, and RANKL/OPG. Calcein and tetracycline fluorescent markers were used for analyzing newly formed bone at undecalcified sections of the tibial implants. These fluorescent markers showed continuous bone formation at cortical bone width and sparse new bone formed along the medullary implant surface in both groups. However, higher counter-torque values and upregulation of OPN expression were achieved by test implants when compared to controls. The modified macrogeometry of implants optimized peri-implant healing, favoring the modulation of OPN expression in the osseous tissue around the implants.

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: Fat, muscle, and bone are endocrine organs capable of affecting the metabolic profile and cardiovascular risk. Relating these components is important to the establishment of early intervention strategies for overweight patients. AIMS: This study aimed to evaluate the influence of body mass components on the metabolic profile and cardiovascular risk in the preoperative period of bariatric surgery. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted with patients admitted for bariatric surgery at a university hospital in the city of Recife, Brazil, between 2018 and 2019. Body composition was determined using dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry. Cardiovascular risk was assessed using the Framingham risk score. Data were collected on anthropometric, clinical, and lifestyle characteristics. The lipid profile (total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and triglycerides), blood glucose, and vitamin D were determined using the standard methods of the hospital laboratory. RESULTS: A total of 60 patients were analyzed, 86.7% of whom had comorbidities, 33.3% had moderate/high cardiovascular risk, and 71.4% had vitamin D insufficiency/deficiency. Lower lean body mass (adjusted PR 3.24; 95%CI 1.19–5.77) was independently associated with the severity of obesity. The body mass index and waist circumference were negatively correlated with lean body mass (r=-0.52; p<0.01)/r=-0.36; p<0.01). Lean body mass was negatively correlated with fat mass (r=-0.26; p<0.05), trunk fat (r=-0.29; p<0.05), fasting glucose (r=-0.26; p<0.05), and bone mineral density (r=-0.26; p<0.05). A total of 84.2% of individuals with less trunk fat tended to have low cardiovascular risk (p=0.05). However, physical inactivity (adjusted PR 2.14; 95%CI 1.19–5.54) and the risk of alcohol dependence (adjusted PR 2.41; 95%CI 1.76–4.15) were the only variables independently associated with cardiovascular risk. CONCLUSION: Obese patients in the preoperative period of bariatric surgery with less trunk fat tended to have low cardiovascular risk. However, the other components of body mass were also not associated with cardiovascular risk.

RESUMO RACIONAL: O tecido adiposo, músculos e ossos representam órgãos endócrinos, capazes de interferir no perfil metabólico e risco cardiovascular. Relacionar esses componentes será importante para estratégias de intervenção precoce, em obesos. OBJETIVOS: Avaliar a influência dos compartimentos da massa corporal, sobre o perfil metabólico e risco cardiovascular, no pré-operatório de cirurgia bariátrica. MÉTODOS: Estudo transversal, com pacientes admitidos para cirurgia bariátrica, em hospital universitário. A composição corporal foi avaliada pela absortometria radiológica de dupla energia e o risco cardiovascular pelo escore de risco de Framingham. Foram analisadas variáveis antropométricas, clínicas e de estilo de vida. Foi avaliado perfil lipídico (colesterol total, HDL-c, LDL-c, triglicerídeos), glicemia e vitamina D, utilizando a metodologia padrão. RESULTADOS: Foram analisados 60 pacientes, 86,7% apresentavam comorbidades, 33,3% risco cardiovascular moderado/elevado e 71,4% insuficiência/deficiência de vitamina D. Menor massa corporal magra associou-se à gravidade da obesidade. O índice de massa corpórea e a circunferência da cintura correlacionaram-se negativamente com a massa corporal magra (r=-0,52; p<0,01)/r=-0,36; p<0,01). A massa corporal magra correlacionou-se negativamente com a massa gorda (r=-0,26; p<0,05), gordura troncular (r=-0,29; p<0,05), glicemia de jejum (r=-0,26; p<0,05) e densidade mineral óssea (r=-0,26; p<0,05). Ao todo, 84,2% dos indivíduos com menos gordura troncular apresentaram tendência a baixo risco cardiovascular (p=0,05). Contudo, inatividade física (razão de prevalência ajustada 2,14; IC95% 1,19–5,54) e risco de dependência alcoólica foram as únicas variáveis independentemente associadas ao risco cardiovascular. CONCLUSÕES: Os pacientes obesos em pré-operatório de cirurgia bariátrica com menos gordura troncular, apresentaram tendência a baixo risco cadiovascular. Contudo, o risco cardiovascular também não foi associado aos demais componentes da massa corporal.

Resumo A felicidade e o bem-estar subjetivo revelam a avaliação de um indivíduo sobre aspectos e condições gerais de vida e o quanto essa pessoa gosta da vida que leva, ou seja, o quanto está satisfeita com sua vida. Nosso estudo analisa a percepção dos moradores de Blumenau (Brasil) sobre a relação de honra, os impactos do turismo de eventos e a satisfação com a vida no apoio ao turismo. A honra do morador, formada por ganhos pessoais, orgulho, sentimento de pertencimento e qualidade de vida, pode impactar significativamente na sensação de satisfação com a vida e uma percepção mais positiva do turismo.

Resumen La felicidad y el bienestar subjetivo revelan la valoración que hace un individuo de aspectos y condiciones generales de vida y cuánto le gusta a esa persona la vida que lleva, es decir, qué tan satisfecho está con su vida. Nuestro estudio estudia la percepción de los residentes de Blumenau (Brasil) sobre la relación de honor, los impactos del turismo de eventos y la satisfacción con la vida en el apoyo al turismo. El honor del residente, formado por la ganancia personal, el orgullo y el sentido de pertenencia y calidad de vida, puede impactar significativamente en el sentido de satisfacción con la vida y una percepción más positiva del turismo.

Abstract Happiness and subjective well-being reveal an individual's assessment of general aspects and conditions of life and how much that person likes the life they lead, that is, how satisfied they are with their life. Our study analyzes the perception of Blumenau (Brazil) residents on the relationship of honor, the impacts of event tourism, and life satisfaction in supporting tourism. The resident's honor, formed by personal gains, pride, and a sense of belonging and quality of life, can significantly impact the sense of satisfaction with life and a more positive perception of tourism.

Abstract Healthcare workers present an increased risk of contagion for the SARS-CoV-2 virus due to their labor exposure. Here, we describe the clinical, laboratory, and immunological characteristics of healthcare workers, before vaccine application, exposed to SARS-CoV-2-infected patients. We collected sociodemographic, clinical, and laboratory information from 50 professionals who worked during the COVID-19 pandemic at the Clinical Hospital of the Northwest in Brazil. The results showed that most workers are women, over 50 years old, and worked as nursing technicians. Approximately 56% of workers were positive for a previous infection by RT-PCR and/or anti-SARS-CoV-2-immunoglobulin tests. Increased levels of hematocrit, neutrophils, NK lymphocytes, and fibrinogen, were found in positive healthcare workers, suggesting a light inflammatory status. The immunological findings showed an increase in IL-17 production and a Th2/Th17/Th22 profile followed by high serology for anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgM and IgG. Those data reveal the importance of studies with healthcare workers to investigate if the continuous exposition to the virus may result in chronic activation of the immune system and/or pulmonary inflammation in this target group.

Resumen Introducción: Momordica charantia L. es ampliamente utilizada para consumo y medicina tradicional debido a sus actividades biológicas. Sin embargo, se sabe poco sobre los efectos del melón amargo en las células sanas. Por lo tanto, nuestro objetivo fue evaluar los efectos del extracto de Momordica charantia en linfocitos humanos aislados, especialmente en aspectos inflamatorios, citotóxicos, genotóxicos y mutagénicos. Método: Para ello se preparó un extracto hidroetanólico con frutos y semillas y se procedió a la identificación y cuantificación fitoquímica. Los linfocitos humanos purificados se expusieron a 12,5; 25; 50 µg/mL de extracto de Momordica charantia durante 24 horas y después de este período. Resultados: Los datos mostraron que el extracto de Momordica charantia no indujo citotoxicidad, alteraciones en la frecuencia de micronúcleos, ni actividad de interleucina-6, interleucina-10 ciclooxigenasa-2 y producción de óxido nítrico; sin embargo, causó daño en el ADN y una disminución de TNF-α en las condiciones experimentales y células aplicadas. Conclusiones: Nuestros datos proponen un proceso antiinflamatorio generado por Momordica charantia mediado por la reducción de TNF-α.

Abstract Introduction: Momordica charantia L. is widely used for consumption and traditional medicine due to its biological activities. Nevertheless, little is known about the effects of bitter melon on healthy cells. Hence, we aimed to evaluate the effects of Momordica charantia extract in human isolated lymphocytes, especially on inflammatory, cytotoxicity, genotoxicity, and mutagenicity aspects. Method: For this, we prepared a hydroethanolic extract with fruits and seeds and proceeded with phytochemical identification and quantification. The human purified lymphocytes were exposed to 12.5, 25, and 50 µg/mL of Momordica charantia extract for 24h and, after this period. Results: The data showed that the Momordica charantia extract did not induce cytotoxicity, micronucleus frequency alterations, or interleukin-6, interleukin-10 cyclooxygenase-2 activity and the production of nitric oxide; however, it caused DNA damage and a decrease of TNF-α under the experimental conditions and cells applied. Conclusions: Our data propose an anti-inflammatory process generated by Momordica charantia mediated by TNF-α reduction.

ABSTRACT Objective: Test if the MRI FAST1.2 protocol can detect extra-pituitary midline structural brain abnormalities in patients with ectopic posterior pituitary (EPP), and highlighting their radiological-laboratory correlations. Subjects and methods: Cross-sectional study of patients with EPP and control group. All individuals were submitted to FAST1.2, which combines the FAST1 protocol developed by our group with 3D T2DRIVE imaging. Results: We evaluated 36 individuals with EPP and 78 as control group. Pituitary stalk (PS) was identified in 7/36 patients in EPP group by FAST1, and in 24/36 patients in FAST1.2 (p < 0.001). FAST1 failed to detect PS in one individual in the control group, while the FAST1.2 defined the PS in all individuals. In EPP group, eleven had interhypothalamic adhesion (IHA), three septo-optic dysplasia, and one cerebellar malformation. We didn’t observe higher frequency of panhypopituitarism or developmental delay in patients with IHA. In control group, three had pars intermedia cysts, one hydrocephalus, and one hypothalamic hamartoma. Conclusions: FAST1.2 allows confident recognition of midline structural abnormalities, including the pituitary stalk and IHA, thereby making MRI acquisition faster and with no need for contrast administration. IHA could be associated with defects in neuronal migration, as occur in patients with EPP, with no clinical significance.

Abstract Objective To develop a low-cost simulator model and a colonoscope with materials that are easily accessible to offer training on colonoscopy skills during undergraduate studies. Since this is the procedure of choice for colorectal cancer screening, the general practitioner must be able to recognize its main indications, preparation, and complications. Methods Using materials such as a mannequin, a vehicle inspection camera, a conduit, polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipe, acrylic, wood, and red paint, we built a simulator and a 150-cm long and 20-to-25-mm thick colonoscope. The colonoscope’s handle and handhold were made of acrylic, the colonoscope’s mobile end was made with articulated PVC rings, and the up and down movements were performed according to the traction of the steel cables. The camera attached to its distal end enables connection to a smartphone to view the image. In the simulator, the conduit was inserted into the mannequin to simulate the curvatures of the colon. Red spray paint was used to simulate the staining of the colonic mucosa in the inner region of the mannequin and the adventitial layer in the outer region. Results We were able to build a simulator and a colonoscope with a total amount of R $ 182.82 (roughly US$ 36.50). Both were tested and proved to be useful in the acquisition of psychomotor and cognitive skills in colonoscopy. Conclusion The simulator and colonoscope developed by us are cost-effective, useful in the acquisition of psychomotor and cognitive skills in colonoscopy, and can facilitate the structuring of a training program for undergraduate students.

Resumo O intenso preparo e revolvimento do solo em cultivos, com o tempo, reduz a quantidade e a qualidade da matéria orgânica do solo. Diante desse contexto, este trabalho teve como objetivo determinar os estoques de carbono do solo e frações lábeis sob sistema agroflorestal (SAF) e topossequências em brejo de altitude, em Taquaritinga do Norte, Pernambuco, Brasil. O estudo foi desenvolvido na fazenda Yaguara, e as áreas estudadas foram mata nativa com 4,57 ha e plantio de café sombreado com mata nativa com 25,59 ha. As amostras de solos foram coletadas em quatro trincheiras 1,5 x 1,5 x 0,60 m, com distância de 50 metros. Foram coletados solos nas profundidades de 0-20, 20-40 e 40-60 cm, seguido de análises químicas, físicas e densidade para determinação dos estoques de carbono no solo e frações lábeis. A área com café sombreado apresentou maiores valores de estoques de carbono no solo nas profundidades de 0-20 cm e 20-40 cm. Na profundidade de 40-60 cm, a topossequência de topo do SAF apresentou maior estoque de carbono com 11,73 Mg ha-1, seguido da área com vegetação nativa com 10,6 Mg ha-1 , encosta com 9,23 Mg ha-1 e pedimento com 7,00 Mg ha-1. Verificou-se que a topossequência de topo com café sombreado exibiu maior estoque de carbono lábil na profundidade 0-20 cm com o valor de 1,06 Mg ha-1, sucedido das áreas de pedimento (SAF) com 0,88 Mg ha-1, mata nativa com 0,79 Mg ha-1e encosta com 0,67 Mg ha-1. No entanto, a área de vegetação nativa apresentou o maior valor de carbono lábil na profundidade de 40-60 cm. Concluiu-se que a área com café sombreado na topossequência topo mostrou grande capacidade para elevar os estoques de carbono total e estoques de carbono lábil da matéria orgânica do solo.

Abstract Intense soil preparation and disturbance in crops, over time, reduces the quantity and quality of soil organic matter. Given this context, this work aimed to determine soil carbon stocks and labile fractions under agroforestry system (AFS) and toposequences in an altitude marsh, Taquaritinga do Norte, Pernambuco, Brazil. The study was carried out at the Yaguara farm, and the areas studied were native forest with 4.57 ha and coffee plantation in shade with native forest with 25.59 ha. Soil samples were collected in four trenches measuring 1.5 x 1.5 x 0.60 m, with a distance of 50 meters. Soils were collected at depths of 0-20, 20-40 and 40-60 cm, followed by chemical, physical and density analyzes to determine soil carbon stocks and labile fractions. The area with shaded coffee showed higher values of soil carbon stocks at depths of 0-20 cm and 20-40 cm. At a depth of 40-60 cm, the AFS top toposequence showed the highest carbon stock with 11.73 Mg ha-1, followed by the area with native vegetation with 10.6 Mg ha-1, slope with 9.23 Mg ha-1 and pediment with 7.00 Mg ha-1. It was found that the top toposequence with shaded coffee exhibited a greater stock of labile carbon at depth 0-20 cm with a value of 1.06 Mg ha-1, followed by the bedding areas (SAF) with 0.88 Mg ha-1, native forest with 0.79 Mg ha-1 and slope with 0.67 g kg-1. However, the area of native vegetation showed the highest value of labile carbon at a depth of 40-60 cm. It was concluded that the area with shaded coffee in the top toposequence showed great capacity to increase total carbon stocks and labile carbon stocks of soil organic matter.

Objective: To describe the mortality trend from all causes of cancer and the five main causes in the state of Mato Grosso, Brazil, from 2000 to 2015. Methods: This is a descriptive, ecological, time series study, with data referring to deaths of residents of Mato Grosso due to neoplasms (ICD-10 codes C00 to C97), from the Mortality Information System (SIM). Time trend analyzes of the standardized mortality rate from all causes of cancer and five specific causes of cancer (lung, prostate, breast, colorectal and cervix) for the state and according to macroregions (South, West, North, East and Center -North) were performed using linear regression (p-value&lt;0.05). Results: From 2000 to 2015, 28,525 deaths from all causes of cancer in residents of the state of Mato Grosso were recorded. An increasing trend was observed for all causes of cancer, in addition to lung, breast and colorectal cancers. Southern and Northern macroregions showed an increasing trend for all causes, breast and colorectal; North-Central for breast and colorectal. East was increasing for all causes, prostate and colorectal, and decreasing for cervix. Conclusions: In the state of Mato Grosso, there was an increasing trend in mortality from all causes of cancer and from specific causes, with emphasis on breast and colorectal cancer in most macroregions.

Objetivo: Descrever a tendência da mortalidade por todas as causas de câncer e das cinco principais causas no Estado de Mato Grosso, Brasil, no período 2000 a 2015. Métodos: Trata-se de um estudo descritivo, ecológico, do tipo série temporal, com dados referentes aos óbitos de residentes de Mato Grosso por neoplasias (códigos C00 a C97 da CID-10), provenientes do Sistema de Informações sobre Mortalidade (SIM). A tendência temporal da taxa de mortalidade padronizada de todas as causas de câncer e cinco causas específicas de câncer (pulmão, próstata, mama feminina, colorretal e colo do útero) para o estado e segundo macrorregiões (Sul, Oeste, Norte, Leste e Centro-Norte) foi analisada por meio de regressão linear (p-valor&lt;0,05). Resultados: De 2000 a 2015, ocorreram 28.525 óbitos por todas as causas de câncer em residentes no Estado de Mato Grosso. Tendência crescente foi observada para todas as causas de câncer, além dos cânceres de pulmão, mama e colorretal. Macrorregiões Sul e Norte apresentaram tendência crescente para todas as causas, mama e colorretal; Centro-Norte para mama e colorretal. Na Macrorregião Leste foi crescente para todas as causas, próstata e colorretal, e decrescente para colo do útero. Conclusões: No Estado de Mato Grosso, verificou-se tendência crescente da mortalidade por todas as causas de câncer e por causas específicas, com destaque para mama e colorretal na maioria das macrorregiões.

SUMMARY BACKGROUND: Coronavirus disease 2019, which is caused by the new severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2, became a pandemic in 2020 with a mortality rate of 2% and high transmissibility, thus making studies with an epidemiological profile essential. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to characterize the population that performed the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 molecular and serological tests in Carlos Chagas Laboratory – Sabin Group in Cuiabá. METHODS: A retrospective cross-sectional study was carried out with all the samples collected from nasal swab tested by RT-PCR and serological for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 IgM/IgG from the population served between April and December 2020. FINDINGS: In the analysis period, 23,631 PCR-coronavirus disease 2019 examinations were registered. Of this total number of cases, 7,649 (32.37%) tested positive, while 15,982 (66.31%) did not detect viral RNA and 374 of the results as undetermined. The peak of positive RT-PCR performed in July (n=5,878), with 35.65% (n=2,096). A total of 8,884 tests were performed on serological test SOROVID-19, with a peak of 1,169 (57.16%) of the positive tests for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 in July. MAIN CONCLUSIONS: Molecular positivity and serological tests, both peaked in July 2020, were mostly present in women aged 20–59 years, characterizing Cuiabá as the epicenter of the Midwest region in this period due to the high rate of transmissibility of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2.
