Abstract The aim of this study was to develop snack bars nutritionally enriched with Spirulina and evaluate if there was acceptance of the sensorial attributes by schoolchildren. Snack bars enriched with Spirulina (2% and 6%) and a control formulation (0% Spirulina) were prepared. The samples were evaluated regarding nutritional content, microstructure, and sensorial characteristics. Furthermore, the study of stability during storage (30 days) was carried out. The addition of 2% and 6% of Spirulina provided a protein increase of 11.7% and 29.9%, respectively. The physicochemical and microbiological parameters remained stable during the storage of 30 days. Sensory evaluation showed that snack bars enriched with 6% Spirulina presented no significant difference (p > 0.05) compared to the control samples. We concluded that Spirulina can be used as a nutritive ingredient in snack bars designed for infant feeding without sensorial characteristics change.

Abstract Microalgae are photosynthetic microorganisms whose composition and biomass production can be influenced by manipulating the cultivation conditions employed. However, few studies have evaluated the effects of various cultivation conditions in autotrophic and mixotrophic conditions. The present work aimed to evaluate the effects of cultivation conditions on the cell growth and biosynthesis of fatty acids (FAs) by microalgae of the genus Chlorella in autotrophic and mixotrophic cultivation. Evaluation of the effects of the conditions was performed using an experimental design methodology. The highest values of maximum biomass concentration (Xmax) and maximum biomass productivity (Pmax) were obtained in autotrophic cultures. Palmitic acid was the FA obtained at the highest concentration in both cultivation modes. The concentrations of polyunsaturated FAs (PUFAs) ranged from 12.2 to 41.2% in autotrophic cultures and from 11 to 34.3% in the mixotrophic cultures. The variables photoperiod and sodium bicarbonate concentration showed the greatest influence on the Xmax, Pmax, and PUFA concentration in autotrophic and mixotrophic cultivations, respectively. This study verified that the selection of conditions and mode of cultivation contribute to the production of microalgal biomass and FA biosynthesis.

ABSTRACT An experiment was conducted during 60 days with forty pacu males fed diets supplemented with increasing concentrations of ractopamine (0.00, 11.25, 22.50, 33.75, and 45.00 mg kg−1). Eight fish were evaluated for each experimental diet. Performance and survival rate of the fish were measured. At the end of the experiment, blood was collected to determine the levels of cortisol, triacylglycerol, and protein. Moreover, the liver was collected to determine the activities of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and malic enzymes. The fillets were collected to determine chemical composition, and histologic cuts were analyzed to verify muscle growth and deposition of adipose tissue between muscle fibers. Increasing concentrations of dietary ractopamine did not change feed intake, fillet yield, fillet content of protein and ash, and frequency of relative distribution of muscle fibers. By increasing the dietary ractopamine concentration, the serum cortisol level was elevated. Ractopamine supplementation (45.00 mg kg−1) increased serum levels of triacylglycerol and protein and reduced the activity of hepatic lipogenic enzymes and the survival rate of the fish, probably in response to the high concentration of circulating cortisol. In addition, the higher level of ractopamine supplementation evaluated in this research impaired the weight gain and feed conversion. However, 11.25 mg kg−1 ractopamine reduced the ether extract level determined in the fillet and the fat deposition between muscle fibers, improving the nutritional quality of meat.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate the reproductive performance of female Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) fed diets containing different levels of digestible energy (DE). The fish were housed in 15 fiberglass tanks (500 L) in a recirculating system at an average temperature of 27.5 °C. The treatments consisted of five diets with increasing levels of DE (3,200; 3,400; 3,600; 3,800; and 4,000 kcal/kg). The levels of DE did not significantly influence the final weight or the hepatosomatic, gonadosomatic, and visceral fat indices. The absolute fecundity was influenced by the treatments, for which the highest values were observed from the 3,600 kcal/kg DE level and upward. The proximate composition of the fish also had a significant effect on the variables crude protein, ether extract, and ash; the fish fed diets with higher levels of DE exhibited the lowest body protein content, while the accumulation of ether extract exhibited the opposite response. A level of 3,600 kcal/kg of digestible energy should be used in diets with 380 g/kg crude protein and a starch/lipid ratio of 1.33 for female Nile tilapia.

Abstract INTRODUCTION American tegumentary leishmaniasis (ATL) is an endemic disease in many regions of Brazil; however, only few reports on the actual epidemiological conditions are available. Here, we aimed to assess the clinical, epidemiological, and laboratory characteristics of ATL patients and their treatment in the 15th Regional Health Division of Paraná State, Maringá, Brazil. METHODS This epidemiological study included patients diagnosed with ATL from January 2010 to September 2014, from the 15th Regional Health Division database. RESULTS A total of 220 cases aged 3-84 years (85% male and 60.9% with up to 8 years of schooling) were included. The cases were classified as having the cutaneous form (n=183; 83.2%), mucosal form (n=26; 11.8%), mucocutaneous form (n=11; 5%), and relapses (n=21; 9.6%). Diagnosis was made via laboratory test results in 197 (89.5%) patients, and 172 (78.2%) completed the treatment within the study period. With regard to patients with the cutaneous form, 134 (95%) were cured, 131 (97.8%) were treated with Glucantime(r), and 47 (36.7%) received dosage of >15 and <20mg Sb5+/kg/day. Among the cases with mucosal involvement, 87.1% were cured and most were treated with <20mg Sb5+/kg/day. Thus, the cure rate was 93.6%. CONCLUSIONS During the study period in the 15th Regional Health Division of Paraná State, ATL cases had a good response to treatment with a low rate of relapse or treatment failure, although a high percentage of mucosal or mucocutaneous form cases was also noted.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of inclusion of dietary glycerol in replacement to starch on the growth and energy metabolism of Nile tilapia juveniles. The experiment was carried out in a completely randomized design with four treatments (0, 5, 10, and 15% purified glycerol) and six replicates. Pelleted, isonitrogenous, and isocaloric diets were provided for 60 days. Growth performance parameters and muscle glucose and protein concentrations were not affected by dietary glycerol levels. The treatment with 15% glycerol presented higher levels of muscle and liver triglycerides. A quadratic effect of treatments on muscle and liver triglyceride concentrations was observed. The treatment with 0% glycerol presented higher hepatic glucose levels than the one with 15%. Treatments did not differ for concentrations of liver protein, as well as of plasma glucose, triglycerides, and protein. Treatments with 10 and 15% glycerol showed higher activity of the glucose-6-phosphate-dehydrogenase enzyme than the treatment with 5%; however, there were no significant differences in the hepatic activities of the malic and glycerol kinase enzymes. A linear positive effect of treatments was observed on the activity of the glycerol kinase enzyme in liver. Levels of glycerol inclusion above 10% in the diet of Nile tilapia juveniles characterize it as a lipogenic nutrient.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

The knowledge of how animals deposited chemical components as water, protein, fat and ash in the carcass is importance for the formulation of a balanced diet, allowing maximum performance with a low environmental impact. So, the study was carried out to evaluate the influence of different tilapia strains (Chitralada, Commercial, Red and Universidade Federal de Lavras [UFLA]) on the deposition of bodily chemical components in the carcass. The bodily components analyzed were water, protein, fat and ash. For the determination of the bodily chemical deposition curves by age, the exponential, Brody, logistic, Gompertz and von Bertalanffy models were adjusted. The Commercial and UFLA strains deposited water at a faster speed (P<0.05) compared with the remaining strains. As for protein, the Red strain had a lower estimated maturity weight (49.37 g), and was more precocious (202 days) with regard to maximum deposition in comparison to the other strains (Chitralada, UFLA and Commercial) in which there was an estimated maturity weight of 231.5 g and maximum depositionfor 337 days. There were no differences (P>0.05) for the logistic model parameter between Red, UFLA and Commercial strains for fat, which presented a maximum fat deposition (0.23 g) at 310 days of age. Regarding ash deposition, the Commercial strain presented a higher maximum deposition (0.10 g) at 337 days, occurring later than the other strains that presented maximum deposition (0.033g) at 254 days of age. Thus, it was concluded that the genetic strains evaluated differ in chemical deposition curves of water, protein, fat and ash.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of dietary lipid sources on Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) hematological parameters. 112 juveniles of Nile tilapia with average initial weight of 50 ± 12g were distributed in 16 tanks with total capacity of 100L each in a totally randomized design with four treatments and four repetitions with seven fish each replicate. Treatments were composed of: treatment one - soybean oil; treatment two - fish oil; treatment three - linseed oil; treatment four - olive oil. Experimental diets were semi-purified, isonitrogenous (32% crude protein) and isocaloric (3200 kcal gross energy/kg of ration). No difference was found between treatments in hemoglobin rates, number of total erythrocytes and leucocytes differential counting (P>0.05). Fish from treatment one presented higher hematocrit rates compared with treatment two and treatment three (P<0.05). The highest level of mean corpuscular volume was observed in fish from treatment four (P<0.05). Fish from treatment three showed higher levels of mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration compared with treatment four (P<0.05). Dietary lipid sources can influence the hematological parameters of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). It was observed a trend of increased erythropoiesis in Nile tilapia fed diets with high levels of ω-6 series fatty acid. Dietary oils were not able to change the total number of erythrocytes and white blood cells in Nile tilapia.

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of the photoperiod on the fillet composition of Nile tilapia juveniles. We employed a completely randomized design with five treatments (0L:24D, 6L:18D, 12L:12D, 18L:6D, 24L:0D) and four replications. We used 160 Nile tilapia juveniles, distributed in 20 tanks containing 20 liters of water, in a recirculation systems, at controlled temperature of 27 ºC and density of eight fish per tank. Fish were fed twice a day with commercial extruded feed containing 40% crude protein. Samples of the fillet at the end of 75 days were collected and stored in a freezer at -80 ºC for subsequent analysis of chemical composition. There was no effect of photoperiod on moisture and ash content of the fillet (P>0.05). The period 18L:6D showed higher amounts of protein in the fillet, as well as lower amounts of fat (P<0.05). Therefore, it can be concluded that the photoperiod can alter Nile tilapia body composition, and the photoperiod 18L:6D contributed to the higher concentration of crude protein and lower fat deposition in Nile tilapia fillets.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of photoperiod on locomotor activity, growth and gonadal development in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) fingerlings. A completely randomised design was used, with five treatments (0L:24D, 6L:18D, 12L:12D, 18L:6D and 24L:0D) and four replicates, with the aquarium as the experimental unit. One hundred and sixty fingerlings of tilapia weighing 3.21±0.05 g and measuring 4.35±0.07 cm each were distributed among 20 aquaria of 20 L in a recirculation system with the temperature controlled to 27 °C, with eight fish per aquarium. Feeding was carried out twice daily for 75 days, with extruded feed containing 40% crude protein. The fingerlings subjected to a photoperiod of 12L:12D as well as those under 18L:6D and 24L:0D showed the greatest locomotor activity, whereas those under 6L:18D and 0L:24D showed the lowest activity. Fish subjected to a photoperiod of 18L:6D and 24L:0D showed the highest levels of performance. However, manipulation of the photoperiod did not influence the gonadal development, survival or the appearance of deformities in juvenile Nile tilapia. Under long photoperiods (18L:6D and 24L:0D), fish direct their energy to somatic growth and induce best feed efficiency.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the metabolic parameters of pacu (Piaractus mesopotamicus) fed diets with different oils. The experiment was conducted in the laboratory, on May 2009, during 28 days. Sixty four fish with initial weight of 61 g, kept in 250 L tanks, were used. The treatments were: control diet plus olive oil; control diet plus corn oil; control diet plus fish oil; and control diet plus corn oil and fish oil. A completely randomized design was used, with four replicates and a 4x4 factorial arrangement (four diets and four sampling times: 7, 14, 21, and 28 days). The following were evaluated: cholesterol and lipoprotein blood levels, muscle chemical composition, and activity of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) and malic enzyme (ME). The data were subjected to analysis of variance, comparisons of means using the Tukey test, and to regression analysis. There were no differences in muscle levels of moisture or ash, but changes were observed in lipid and protein deposition, depending on collection time, for all treatments. The diets interfered in the evaluated blood parameters. G6PD activity is higher than that of ME, being higher in animals fed with olive and corn oil, suggesting more lipid deposition in the muscles of these fish. Therefore, the lipid metabolism of pacu is influenced by the lipid composition of the diet.

Metaplastic and degenerative changes are usually observed in the epithelial lining of odontogenic cysts. These processes are considered rare in Odontogenic tumors. Objective: to demonstrate the presence of clear cells in the epithelial lining of a series of odontogenic cystic lesions. Methods: a descriptive study was done, in a sample of 22 histological slides of the total odontogenic cystic lesions originating from the Oral Pathology Laboratory at the Federal University of Paraiba. The slides were examined by two calibrated examiners and the paraffin blocks, corresponding to the lesions, where clear cells were observed, were re-processed and the slides were stained by the Periodic Acid-Schiff technique after digestion by diastase and evaluated for the presence of mucous cells. Results: mucin-containing cells were present in 12(54,5 %) of the stained lesions by Periodic Acid-Schiff technique with diastase. Mucous cells were observed in 5(41.66 %) of 12 root cysts cases, 1(50 %) of 2 keratocystic odontogenic tumors, in 4(100 %) cases of dentigerous cysts and in 2(100 %) cases of unicystic ameloblastomas. Clear cells were often observed in inflammation areas. Conclusion: In the study sample mucous cells could be evidenced occasionally in the epithelium of cystic odontogenic lesions.
