RESUMO A própolis, uma substância resinosa produzida pelas abelhas melíferas a partir de exsudatos coletados em diferentes partes das plantas, tem sido utilizada há séculos na medicina popular devido as suas propriedades terapêuticas. Esta substância apresenta atividade antiinflamatória, antitumoral, antioxidante e imunomoduladora, embora muitos dos seus mecanismos de ação sejam desconhecidos. A imunomodulação pela própolis pode estar associada tanto com a estimulação quanto com a supressão de determinados eventos da resposta imune. Os efeitos antagônicos e muitas vezes não complementares sobre o sistema imunológico podem ser decorrentes da grande variabilidade química existente entre diferentes amostras de própolis, bem como das diferentes metodologias adotadas nos estudos científicos, resultando em variada ação farmacológica. Este artigo teve como objetivo revisar e discutir alguns aspectos relacionados à ação da própolis sobre o sistema imunológico.

ABSTRACT Propolis is a resinous substance produced by honeybees from exudates collected from different parts of the plants. It has been used for centuries in popular medicine due to its therapeutic characteristics. This substance presents antiinflammatory, anti-tumoral, anti-oxidant and immunomodulator activities, even though many of its mechanisms of action are still unknown. Immunomodulation induced by propolis can be associated with stimulation as well as suppression of certain events of the immune response. The antagonic and sometimes noncomplementary effects on the immunological system can be attributed to the wide chemical variability present among different propolis samples, as well as to the different methodologies used in scientific studies, resulting in a varied pharmacological action. This work aims at reviewing and discussing some aspects related to the mechanism of action of propolis on the immunological system.

Primary cultures of Mannheimia granulomatis were established in chicken embryos to assess their capacity to stimulate fibroblast proliferation. The capacity of the bacterium-activated macrophages to stimulate cytokine and enzyme proliferation was assessed in a mouse peritoneum macrophage culture. To evaluate the bacteria infection on fibroblasts and their growth within 48h in relation to the active macrophages, cultures were washed and trypsinized and the cells counted. Results showed no significant differences when the bacteria-infected fibroblasts were mixed with bacterial extract (P=0.9682). The treatment using just products of macrophages resulted similar to the negative control. Significant differences on cell proliferation were established (P=0,0039) when the products of M. granulomatis-activated macrophages were used, meaning that bacterial components were unable to promote fibroblast increase. Further research is needed to elucidate the effect of M. granulomatis on the macrophages.

Antibody titres to canine distemper virus (CDV) and canine parvovirus (CPV) were measured in 132 dogs: 80 had been vaccinated at least once, 22 had not been vaccinated, and 30 had unknown vaccination history. Serum antibody titers were measured by means of serum neutralization (CDV) or hemagglutination inhibition (CPV). Serum CDV titers >20 and serum CPV titers >80 were considered protective. Protective antibodies to CDV were present in 40.1% of the population: 39.8% of the vaccinated dogs, 31.8% unvaccinated, and in 46.6% of the dogs with unknown vaccination history. Protective antibodies to CPV were present in 90.9% of the dogs: 93.7% of the vaccinated dogs, 90.9% of the unvaccinated, and 83.3% of the dogs with unknown vaccination history.
