Abstract This study aimed to apply, in unprecedented depth, a Bayesian approach to the non-linear regression model developed by Toler for evaluating the stability and adaptability of genotypes. Twenty-five soybean cultivars were evaluated in twenty-one plots across the midwestern of Brazil. A complete block design was employed, with three replications. The evaluated variable was grain yield. The proposed methodology was implemented in the R program by means of the BRugs package. The methodology was capable of differentiating the effect of the environment on soybean cultivars in terms of yield in the different environments, allowing exploration of the response of each genotype to environmental variations. Cultivars 6266RSF, NS6990, GD19I435, GD19I439, GD19C443, RC0496 and IA18661 presented good stability and general adaptability, being the most recommended for future evaluations. Abstract The Santa Catarina Island Bay (SCIB) contributes with the largest production of cultivated oysters in Brazil, which is almost entirely based on hatchery produced cultchless oyster spat, whose metamorphosis is induced by an epinephrine solution. A production scale experiment was carried out to analyze the technical feasibility of the spat-on-shell system in SCIB. The experiment was carried out for 47 weeks, involving an internal phase, the larval settlement, and an external phase, encompassing nursery and growth. Nursery periods varied according to the experimental treatments: T3W - 3 weeks; T5W - 5 weeks; and T12W - 12 weeks. T3W and T5W showed lower survival during the two-week period shortly after transfer of the cultch from the nursery to the grow-out phase, likely linked to premature exposure of the spat in the cultch strings to predators such as fish. The 12-week nursery period showed the best results with clusters with a median of 6 animals and 11.4 g of meat per oyster at the end of the experimental period. Future studies could verify whether longer nursery periods or alternative methods to avoid exposure to predators can outperform these results.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi comparar a morfometria de megalopas de caranguejo do mangue (Ucides cordatus) produzidas em laboratório e capturadas na natureza. Dez megalopas de U. cordatus de cada grupo (produzidas em laboratório e capturadas na natureza) foram analisadas individualmente utilizando microscópio estereoscópico equipado com ocular micrométrica. Comprimento, largura e altura de todas as megalopas foram medidos, e o tamanho dos apêndices corporais foi determinado. Os resultados são indicativos de que as megalopas produzidas em laboratório são mais robustas que as selvagens. Além disso, algumas diferenças significativas no tamanho de certos apêndices podem ser pistas do tipo de alterações que os indivíduos produzidos em laboratório experimentam.

The objective of this work was to compare the morphometry of hatchery-reared and wild-caught mangrove crab (Ucides cordatus) megalopae. Ten U. cordatus megalopae of each group (hatchery-reared and wild-caught) were individually analyzed using a stereoscopic microscope equipped with an ocular micrometer. Length, width, and height of all megalopae were measured, and the size of body appendices was determined. The results indicate that the hatchery-reared megalopae are more robust than the wild ones. Furthermore, some significant differences in the size of certain appendices can be cues of the kind of alterations that hatchery-reared individuals experience.

Um dos fatores mais limitantes que afetam o cultivo larval de Ucides cordatus (Linnaeus, 1763) em laboratório é um período de alta mortalidade, o qual usualmente ocorre no fim do curso da larvicultura durante a metamorfose da fase de zoea para a de megalopa. O objetivo da presente pesquisa foi analisar o desenvolvimento pósembrionário de U. cordatus em uma base individual e, em particular, procurar por padrões ligando distúrbios no processo de muda com as altas taxas de mortalidade observadas nas larviculturas massivas. Um total de 50 larvas foram cultivadas individualmente da eclosão até a fase de megalopa em condições controladas, alimentadas com uma combinação de microalgas e rotíferos. A taxa de sobrevivência foi de 70% até zoea V. As 35 larvas zoea V sobreviventes seguiram dois diferentes caminhos. Onze realizaram a metamorfose diretamente para megalopa, dezoito mudaram para zoea VI e seis morreram como zoea V. No último evento de muda, apenas duas larvas zoea VI atingiram a fase de megalopa, enquanto as dezesseis restantes morreram. Em investigação posterior sob microscópio, 13 das zoea VI mortas mostravam características de estágio de prémuda e pereiópodes desproporcionalmente grandes em relação à carapaça. O padrão observado lembra a Síndrome da Morte na Muda (MDS) descrita para outras espécies de decápodes, na qual larvas morrem no fim da fase de prémuda do ciclo de mudas. Nós sugerimos que larvas de U. cordatus desenvolvem distúrbios no processo de muda similares à MDS descrita para outras espécies e que esses distúrbios são relacionados a um caminho mais complexo que envolve a ocorrência do estágio larval zoea VI.

One of the most limiting factors affecting the larval rearing of Ucides cordatus in the laboratory is a period of high mortality, which usually occurs late in the course of the larviculture during the metamorphosis from the zoeal to the megalopal phase. The objective of the present research was to analyze the post-embryonic development of U. cordatus on an individual basis and, in particular, to search for patterns linking disturbances in the molting process to the high larval death rates observed in massive larvicultures. A total of 50 larvae were individually reared from hatching to metamorphosis into the megalopal phase under controlled conditions, fed a combination of microalgae and rotifers. The survivorship rate was 70% until zoea V. The 35 surviving zoea V larvae followed two different pathways. Eleven underwent metamorphosis directly to megalopa, eighteen molted to zoea VI and six died as zoea V. In the last molting event, only two zoea VI larvae reached the megalopal stage, while the remaining sixteen died. In further observation under microscope, 13 of the dead zoea VI showed characteristics of the pre-molt stage and pereiopods disproportionably large in relation to the carapace. The observed pattern resembles the Molt Death Syndrome (MDS) described for other decapod species, in which larvae die in the late pre-molt phase of the molting cycle. We suggest that U. cordatus larvae develop disturbances in the molting process similar to the MDS described for other species and that these disturbances are related to a more complex pathway involving the emergence of larval stage zoea VI.

Current efforts for restocking natural populations of the mangrove crab Ucides cordatus (Linnaeus, 1763) in Brazil have focused on developing a methodology for stimulating the metamorphosis of U. cordatus larvae at a large scale. The aim of the present study was to compare the mortality rates both in individual and mass conditions, during the induction of metamorphosis of megalopa to juvenile in U. cordatus, without the use of mangrove sediment as substrate. Furthermore, the importance of intraspecific antagonistic behavior on survivorship rates during early post-metamorphosis period was investigated. Metamorphosis was induced by the use of water conditioned with conspecific adults (30 indiv. 100 L-1 for 24 hours). In the first assay, megalopae were stimulated into metamorphosis in experimental vials, both under individual and mass rearing conditions. The second assay assessed the interactions between megalopae and first instar juveniles, which have metamorphosed for more than 24 hours. In the third assay, the existence of cannibalistic behavior among first instar juveniles under different experimental densities was investigated. Significant differences between survivorship rates of individuals that metamorphosed under individual and mass rearing conditions were detected. However no cannibalistic behavior between juveniles and megalopae was observed in the second assay. Juveniles reared at a density of 200 indiv.m-2 showed survivorship rates similar to those obtained under individual conditions. Yet 500 juveniles.m-2 treatments showed significantly lower survivorship rates. Intraspecific interactions appear to be an important problem in U. cordatus specifically during the metamorphosis, but not during larval and post-larval rearing.

Objetivou-se com este estudo avaliar os impactos ambientais causados por um sistema de cultivo de camarões marinhos em tanque-rede sobre a qualidade da água e sobre a estrutura da comunidade zooplanctônica. O estudo foi realizado na Baía de Guaratuba, onde os cultivos eram realizados em 300 tanques-rede (3,6 m de comprimento, 3,6 m de largura e 2 m de profundidade) distribuídos em uma área de 4.200 m², em densidade de 720 camarões/m². As concentrações de amônia, nitrito e fosfato na água foram monitoradas e amostras de zooplâncton foram coletadas no local dos cultivos (ponto 1) e em outros três pontos localizados a aproximadamente 200 m para oeste, noroeste e sudeste dos tanques. O ponto 5, usado como controle, localizava-se a aproximadamente 1.000 m a sudoeste da área de produção. As concentrações de nitrogênio amoniacal, nitrito e fosfato não diferiram entre os pontos amostrados, assim como a estrutura da comunidade zooplanctônica, que foi semelhante entre os pontos amostrados. Não foram evidenciados impactos significativos do empreendimento sobre a qualidade da água ou sobre estrutura das comunidades zooplanctônicas no local do cultivo e em áreas adjacentes, durante o período em que a investigação foi conduzida.

The objective of the present study was to evaluate environmental impacts caused by a system of shrimp farming in net-pen on water quality and on the structure of zooplanktonic community. The study was carried out in Baía de Guaratuba, were the cultivations were conducted in 300 net-pens (3.6 m in length, 3.6 m in width, and 2 m in depth), distributed in an area of approximately 4,200 m² in 720 shrimp/m² density. Concentrations of ammonia, nitrite and phosphate in the water were monitored and zooplankton samples were collected from cultivation sites (point 1) and from three other sites located approximately 200 m to the west, northeast and southeast from the tanks. Point 5, used as control, was at approximately 1,000 m southwest from the production site. Concentrations of amoniacal nitrogen, nitrite and phosphate did not differ among sampled points as well as the structure of zoopplantonic community, which was similar among the sampled points. No significant impacts of the enterprise on the quality of the water and on the structure of the zooplankton communities in the cultivation site and in adjacent areas was evidenced during the period in which the investigation was carried out.

Simulações em laboratório foram efetuadas visando investigar se após liberação na natureza a sobrevivência de recrutas de Ucides cordatus produzidos em laboratório é afetada por outras espécies de caranguejos. Adicionalmente, foi verificado se com a liberação de juvenis no estágio 1, ao invés de megalopas, haveria redução da mortalidade causada por predação interespecífica. Para tanto foi realizada estimativa prévia da estrutura da comunidade de caranguejos presente na área-alvo de um programa de repovoamento em desenvolvimento na região de Santo Amaro, Baía de Todos os Santos, Brazil, cujos resultados mostraram grande dominância de caranguejos violinista (Uca spp.). Com base nessa informação, foram realizados experimentos para verificar as relações ecológicas entre megalopas e juvenis 1 de Ucides cordatus e as diferentes classes de tamanho das outras espécies de Uca, em presença de sedimento do mangue, simulando condições naturais, e na ausência de refúgio. Observou-se que os caranguejos violinista competem predando tanto juvenis quanto megalopas de Ucides cordatus. Além disso, foi visto que esse comportamento de predação é exercido apenas por indivíduos com largura de carapaça maior que 0,5 cm. Os resultados do teste de simulação das condições do ambiente natural evidenciaram que o mesmo padrão de predação foi observado mesmo quando o sedimento foi oferecido como refúgio, sendo as taxas de sobrevivência significativamente menores na presença de espécies de Uca.

Simulations in the laboratory were used to investigate whether survivorship rates of Ucides cordatus youngsters produced in the laboratory are significantly affected by other crab species after their release in natural environments. Furthermore, it was investigated whether the release of first instar juveniles instead of megalopae would reduce the mortality related to interspecific predation. A preliminary estimate of the crab community structure in the target area of a restocking program was undertaken and indicated a great dominance of fiddler crabs (Uca spp). Based on this information, experiments were conducted to assess the ecological relationship between Ucides cordatus megalopae and first instar juveniles and fiddler crabs of different size classes in the presence of mangrove sediment, simulating natural conditions, as well as in the absence of any kind of refuge. It was observed that fiddler crabs not only compete with, and prey on U. cordatus youngsters, both as megalopae and juveniles. Furthermore, it was observed that the predation behavior of fiddler crabs is exercised only by individuals with carapaces wider than 0.5 cm. The results of the assay simulating natural conditions showed that, even when sediment was provided as a refuge, the same pattern was observed, with survivorship rates significantly lower in the presence of Uca crabs.

Target areas for Ucides cordatus (Linnaeus, 1763) restocking programs are often located far from the laboratory where larval rearing is developed. During translocation, the larvae are submitted to highly stressful conditions due to handling, packing, and transport activities. The aim of the present study was to assess the mortality rates of U. cordatus megalopae caused by different transportation procedures. Megalopae at loading densities of 50, 150, and 300 ind.L-1 were packed in double polyethylene 12 x 25 cm plastic bags with 200 ml of marine water at salinity 30. The bags were filled with oxygen at a proportion of 1:2 parts of water and sealed tightly. The trepidations during transport were simulated by the use of a shaker device (800 vibrations/minute) over periods of three and six hours inside a dark container. The survivorship rates of larvae after simulation were compared to those obtained in control groups, which consisted of plastic vials with megalopae at a loading density of 50 ind.L-1 maintained at rest. Immediately after the two transport simulations, there was no significant difference in survivorship between the treatments and the control. However, 24 hours after simulation some of the tested densities resulted in significantly lower survivorships. The results demonstrated that U. cordatus megalopae can tolerate six hours of shaking during transportation, at high densities with minimal mortality.

Fish predation is thought to exert an important influence on the demographical dynamics of larvae and juveniles of estuarine brachyuran crabs but few studies have investigated this phenomenon in nature. In this study, fishes were captured during full moons (in January and February 2005), when many brachyuran species are known to release their larvae. Samples were carried out in the Pinheiros river, Guaratuba Bay, Paraná, Brazil. The stomach contents of collected fishes were surveyed to determine the species that are most likely to prey on brachyuran immature forms in this location. Two techniques were used to capture fishes: manual samplings, using a 5-mm mesh size net (1.8m depth), and bottom trawling with a 20-mm mesh size net. The collected specimens were fixed using 10% formaldehyde and preserved in 70% ethanol. A total of 2941 fishes of 43 different species were collected and the stomach contents of 962 individuals were analyzed in laboratory. Food items were identified and quantified. The fish species captured using manual nets that showed the highest number of preyed zoeae per stomach was the clupeid Platanichthys platana (Regan, 1917). Sphoeroides testudineus (Linnaeus, 1758) and Centropomus parallelus Poey, 1860 showed the highest levels of predation on megalopae. Of the fish species captured using trawl nets, Genidens genidens (Cuvier, 1829) showed the highest average number of zoeae per analyzed stomach and Bairdiella ronchus (Cuvier, 1830) was the most important predator on brachyuran megalopae and on young juveniles. The obtained data indicate that brachyuran crab restocking efforts performed in the Guaratuba Bay should include strategies to avoid or, at least, reduce the access of fishes to the released early juvenile stages, given the potential substantial losses caused by fish predation. Considering that, in general, predation potential was 8.5 times lower in juveniles than in megalopae, releasing immature forms produced in laboratory in the juvenile phase or releasing megalopae into tethered areas and maintaining than under this condition until they reach the juvenile phase may be tested as a method to reduce losses given to fish predation.

O estágio de desenvolvimento em que se encontram as formas jovens de caranguejo produzidas em laboratório, no momento da sua liberação para o ambiente, é um fator chave para o sucesso dos trabalhos de repovoamento. O presente trabalho teve como objetivo determinar a idade mais adequada das formas jovens de U. cordatus, produzidas em laboratório, para sua liberação no ambiente natural. Especificamente, o momento em que as megalopas procuram o sedimento de mangue para escavar tocas foi determinado, assim como o tempo que demoram até realizarem a metamorfose para o primeiro estágio juvenil. O experimento indicou que as megalopas de U. cordatus produzidas em laboratório levam de 3 a 10 dias (mediana = 6) após a metamorfose até escavarem tocas no sedimento. O tempo médio que as megalopas levaram até realizar a metamorfose para o primeiro estágio juvenil foi de 12,6 dias (desvio padrão = 2,33).

The goal of the present study was to determine the most appropriate time to release the immatures of Ucides cordatus (Linnaeus) produced in the laboratory into the natural environments. Specifically, the time when the megalopae sought the mangrove sediment to excavate the burrows was determined, as well as the time necessary for their metamorphosis into the first juvenile stage. Results indicated that the megalopae of U. cordatus reared in the laboratory took three to ten days (median = 6) after their molt to excavated burrows in the sediment. The average time for the megalopae to molt into juveniles was 12.6 days (SD = 2.3).
