ABSTRACT Rice (Oryza sativa) is among the most important crops worldwide; however, rice crops demand high water consumption. Future projections indicate reduced water availability and severe drought events, which may affect rice crops as the cereal is highly sensitive to drought stress. Thus, cultivars with lower water demand for irrigation or drought escape capacities are among the strategies to address this issue. This study aimed to assess five mutant rice genotypes in terms of growth cycle length, other agronomic interest traits, and drought response in the reproductive stage. The mutant genotypes evaluated showed a shortening of the growth cycle compared to the original cultivar, BRS Pampeira, representing a drought escape strategy. In addition, mutations did not negatively affect plant height and crop yield. However, similar to the original cultivar, mutants are not tolerant to water deficit in the reproductive stage. The genotypes evaluated have potential to be released as early cycle cultivars, which can reduce water demand during the harvest season while presenting a drought escape strategy. Abstract The objective of this work was to map the chromosomal regions responsible for iron accumulation in rice grains, in Southern Brazil. Eighty-one rice accessions were genotyped and phenotyped for Fe accumulation. Single nucleotide polymorphisms were mapped in the whole grain on chromosomes 1, 5, 6, and 10, from which 13 candidate genes were identified. Some of the genes, such as O s10g040680 0, seem to have a relationship with Fe homeostasis, while others are related to other metabolic processes or have an unknown function.

Resumo O objetivo deste trabalho foi mapear regiões cromossômicas responsáveis pelo acúmulo de ferro em grãos de arroz, na região Sul do Brasil. Oitenta e um acessos de arroz foram genotipados e fenotipados quanto ao acúmulo de Fe. Polimorfismos de nucleotídeos únicos foram mapeados no grão integral, nos cromossomos 1, 5, 6 e 10, dos quais 13 genes candidatos foram identificados. Alguns dos genes, como o Os10g0406800, parecem ter relação com a homeostase do Fe, enquanto outros têm relação com outros processos metabólicos ou função desconhecida.

ABSTRACT Tuberculosis (TB) is a serious infectious disease, and its control is considered a challenge, especially among vulnerable populations such as prisoners. The occurrence of TB in prisons is an alarming public health problem in many countries. This integrative review aims to describe the epidemiology of TB and control strategies for this disease in countries with the largest prison populations. Studies have shown that it is essential to know the prevalence of TB in prisons of each country. This is because it can serve as an indication of the need for action in prisons to reduce TB rates, including improving the structure of prison environments, rapidly and accurately diagnosing new cases, identifying drug-resistant strains, and implementing effective and directly observed treatment for TB.

ABSTRACT The olive tree (Olea europaea L.) is a species of great importance in history and economic, with large phenotypic variability, represented through a wide range of cultivars spread throughout the world. There are several studies on the characterization of a large number of cultivars of the species. However, there is a need to uncover how these phenotypic traits are heritable, and how they can change when environmental conditions vary. For this reason, the objective here was to estimate the heritability coefficients for fruit characters in six commercial cultivars, analyzed under conditions in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The study was carried out in a single year, based on the analysis of fruit and oil traits on the cultivars Arbequina, Arbosana, Frantoio, Koroneiki, Manzanilla de Sevilla, and Picual, under environmental conditions in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. Phenotypic plasticity and broad-sense heritability were estimated in both inter and intra-cultivar comparisons. From the analyses of variance and heritability, it was observed that some cultivars such as Koroneiki or Picual had their characters mainly under genetic control, while Arbequina was more influenced by genotype-environment interaction. The information derived from this work can help guide the selection of cultivars that are best adapted under the local environments of the southern region of Brazil.

Abstract There is a worldwide concern about a possible narrowing of the genetic base of most crops, as e.g. that of rice (Oryza sativa L.), as a result of the modern breeding practices. Thus, the purpose of this study was to investigate this phenomenon in the germplasm of elite paddy rice in southern Brazil, including frequently used accessions in crosses. The panel consisted of 91 accessions. Data of morphological traits, SNP markers and mineral content of husked and polished grain were analyzed by hierarchical clustering and principal component analysis. The SNP markers and hierarchical clustering proved most appropriate to assess the genetic variability. A narrowing of the genetic base of rice was confirmed, although a certain level of genetic variability was still found in the germplasm of elite paddy rice in south Brazilian rice, particularly for grain mineral content.

Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi comparar o uso de métodos biométricos uni e multivariados na avaliação da adaptabilidade e da estabilidade de um importante grupo de cultivares de aveia-branca (Avena sativa), cultivadas no Sul do Brasil. Utilizou-se o delineamento experimental de blocos ao acaso, em arranjo fatorial 12 ambientes x 7 cultivares, com três repetições. A análise de variância e os métodos de Eberhart & Russel, de Annicchiarico e da média harmônica do desempenho relativo dos valores genéticos preditos (MHPRVG) foram avaliados. Na comparação geral dos métodos, os genótipos 'UPFA Gaudéria' e 'URS Guapa' foram os mais estáveis em relação à produtividade de grãos. Os genótipos 'UPFA Gaudéria' e 'URS-21' destacaram-se em peso do hectolitro, tendo apresentado as melhores respostas pelo método de Annicchiarico e da MHPRVG. Para a massa de mil grãos, todos os métodos apresentaram resultados semelhantes, o que indica que o genótipo 'UPFA Gaudéria' apresentou os melhores resultados. O genótipo 'URS Guapa' foi superior quando foram utilizados os métodos de Eberhart & Russel, de Annicchiarico e da MHPRVG. Os métodos uni e multivariados avaliados são adequados para estimar com confiança a adaptabilidade e a estabilidade das cultivares para cada objetivo de produção, rendimento e qualidade de grãos.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to compare uni- and multivariate biometric methods to evaluate the adaptability and stability of an important group of white oat (Avena sativa) cultivars grown in Southern Brazil. The used experimental design was a randomized complete block, in a factorial arrangement of 12 environments x 7 cultivars, with three replicates. The analysis of variance and the methods of Eberhart & Russel, Annicchiarico, and the harmonic mean of the relative performance of predicted genetic values (MHPRVG) were assessed. In the general comparison of the methods, the 'UPFA Gaudéria' and 'URS Guapa' genotypes were more stable regarding grain yield. The 'UPFA Gaudéria' and 'URS-21' genotypes stood out for hectoliter weight, presenting the best performances by the methods of Annicchiarico and the MHPRVG. For thousand-grain weight, all methods showed similar results, indicating that the 'UPFA Gaudéria' genotype presented the best results. The 'URS Guapa' genotype was superior when using the methods of Eberhart & Russel, Annicchiarico, and the MHPRVG. The uni- and multivariate methods evaluated are suitable to estimate with high confidence the adaptability and stability of cultivars for each targeted grain production, yield, and quality.

RESUMO O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar a expressão relativa de dois genes candidatos, CYP (ciclofilina) e Arabinogalactana, possivelmente envolvidos com a qualidade das sementes, em tegumentos contrastantes de sementes de soja. Foram utilizados os genótipos BMX Potência RR e CD 202, ambos de tegumentos amarelos, e os genótipos TP e IAC, de tegumentos pretos. A expressão relativa dos genes foi avaliada pela técnica qPCR, em sete fases de desenvolvimento dos tegumentos dos quatro genótipos, aos 25; 30; 35; 40; 45; 50 e 55 dias após a antese. O delineamento foi o inteiramente casualizado, com três repetições. Os dados foram submetidos à análise de variância e as médias comparadas pelo teste de Scott Knott, ao nível de 5% de probabilidade. O gene CYP apresentou maior expressão nas fases intermediárias de desenvolvimento dos tegumentos dos genótipos CD 202 e IAC, tegumento amarelo e tegumento preto, respectivamente. O gene Arabinogalactana apresentou maior expressão nas fases finais de desenvolvimento dos tegumentos de BMX Potência RR, de tegumento amarelo.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the relative expression of two candidate genes, CYP (cyclophilin) and Arabinogalactan, possibly involved with seed quality, in contrasting soybean seed coats. The following genotypes were used: BMX Potência RR and CD 202, both with yellow coats, and TP and IAC, with black coats. The relative expression of the genes was evaluated by qPCR in seven development phases of the coats of the four genotypes at 25; 30; 35; 40; 45; 50 and 55 days after anthesis. The design was completely randomized, with three replicates. The data were submitted to analysis of variance and the means were compared via the Scott Knott test, at 5% probability. The CYP gene showed greater expression in the intermediate stages of development of the coats of the genotypes CD 202 and IAC, yellow coat and black coat, respectively. The A rabinogalactan gene presented greater expression in the final stages of coats development of BMX Potência RR.

RESUMO Diferentes fatores ambientais podem afetar a seletividade de herbicidas às culturas. O objetivo deste experimento foi avaliar os efeitos da época de semeadura e da redução artificial da luminosidade, em diferentes fases do desenvolvimento das plantas, sobre a seletividade de herbicidas e os componentes de produtividade do arroz irrigado. O experimento foi conduzido a campo, na safra 2012/2013, com o cultivar IRGA 424. Os fatores estudados foram: época de semeadura (18/outubro e 09/novembro); herbicidas (testemunha capinada, bispyribac-sodium e penoxsulam) e fases do desenvolvimento da cultura com luminosidade reduzida de 70% [testemunha, plântula (S0-V4), períodos vegetativo, reprodutivo e todo o ciclo]. Foi utilizado o delineamento inteiramente casualizado, em esquema fatorial, com quatro repetições, sendo que os fatores época de semeadura e redução de luminosidade foram dispostos em faixas, visando a viabilizar o experimento. Avaliaram-se: fitotoxicidade visual, colmos e panículas por área, espiguetas por panícula, esterilidade de espiguetas, peso de 1000 sementes e produtividade. Os dados foram submetidos à análise de variância pelo teste F (p≤0,05) e teste de médias de DMS de Fischer (p≤0,05). A época de semeadura influencia na seletividade de bispyribac-sodium, sendo que, quando realizada a semeadura perto do início do período recomendado, em 18/outubro, reduz-se a produtividade do cultivar estudado. A redução artificial de luz em diferentes fases do desenvolvimento não afeta a seletividade dos herbicidas bispyribac-sodium e penoxsulam sobre o arroz irrigado.

ABSTRACT Different environmental factors can have effect on the selectivity of herbicides on crops. The aim of this experiment was to evaluate the effect of sowing time and of artificial reduction of the luminosity at different stages of plant development on the herbicide selectivity and yield components of irrigated rice. The field experiment was carried out in 2012/2013 harvest, with the IRGA 424 cultivar. The factors studied were: sowing time (October 18 and November 9), herbicides (weeded control, bispyribac-sodium and penoxsulam) and stages of development of culture with luminosity reduced by 70% [control, seedling (S0-V4), vegetative and reproductive periods and entire cycle]. The experimental design was the completely randomized, in a factorial scheme, with four replications, but sowing time and reduced luminosity were imposed in strips, to make possible the experiment. Evaluated: visual phytotoxicity, stems and panicles per area, spikelets per panicle, spikelet sterility, thousand seed weight and yield. Data were subjected to analysis of variance by F test (p ≤ 0.05) and mean test of DMS Fischer (p ≤ 0.05). The sowing time influences the selectivity of bispyribac-sodium, and when held near the beginning of the period recommended, in October 18, reduces the yield of the cultivar studied. The artificial reduction of light in different phases of the development does not affect the selectivity of herbicides bispyribac-sodium and penoxsulam on irrigated rice.

The seed coat has an important role related to seed resistance and deterioration. Therefore, it becomes necessary to understand the mechanisms of genes responsible for traits which can assist developing cultivars with better seed quality. In this sense, the analysis of the expression of fla 14 gene, encoding for the Arabinogalactan protein, which is directly related to cell wall synthesis in soybean seed coat, can contribute to the advancement of this study. Thus, the aim of this work was to validate primers and analyze fla 14 gene expression profile in four soybean genotypes, two of these with black seed coat (TP and IAC 222) and higher lignin content, and two others with yellow seed coat (CD 202 and Potência) and lower lignin content. The plant tissue (seed coat) was collected 50 days after anthesis. qRT-PCR technique was used for genotypes gene expression analysis, through which four combinations of primersconstructed from soybean EST sequence models were tested. The validation results demonstrated the efficiency of FLA 14 p1 and FLA 14 p2 primers in gene expression studies. Regarding fla 14 gene, it was possible to notice that the expression profile of this gene is quantitatively superior in soybean genotypes with black coat and higher lignin content when comparing it with genotypes with yellow coat and lower lignin content.

O tegumento apresenta uma função importante quanto à resistência das sementes e a sua deterioração. Sendo assim, torna-se necessário entender os mecanismos de genes responsáveis por caracteres que possam auxiliar no desenvolvimento de variedades com melhor qualidade. Nesse sentido, a análise da expressão do gene fla 14 que codifica para a proteína Arabinogalactana que esta relacionada diretamente com a síntese da parede celular no tegumento da semente de soja pode contribuir para o avanço dos estudos. Sendo assim, o objetivo do trabalho foi validar primers e analisar o perfil da expressão do gene fla 14 em quatro genótipos de soja, dois desses com tegumento preto (TP e IAC 222) e maior conteúdo de lignina, e outros dois com tegumento amarelo (CD 202 e Potência) e menor conteúdo de lignina. O tecido vegetal (tegumento) foi coletado aos 50 dias após a antese. Para a análise da expressão gênica dos genótipos, utilizou-se a técnica de qRT-PCR, onde foram testadas quatro combinações de primers construídos a partir de modelos de sequência de ESTs da soja. Os resultados da validação demostraram a eficiência dos primers FLA 14 p1 e FLA 14 p2para serem utilizados em estudos de expressão gênica. Em relação ao gene fla 14, pode-se observar queo perfil de expressão deste gene é quantitativamente superior nos genótipos de soja com tegumento preto e conteúdo superior de lignina quando relacionado com os genótipos com tegumento amarelo e menor teor de lignina.

RESUMOO objetivo neste trabalho foi avaliar a qualidade fisiológica de sementes de arroz em função da aplicação de herbicidas em duas épocas de semeadura e redução artificial de luz em diferentes fases do desenvolvimento da cultura. O experimento a campo, realizado na safra 2012/2013, constou de fatorial 2x3x5, sendo os fatores: época de semeadura (18/10 e 09/11); herbicida [testemunha (capinada), bispiribaque sódico e penoxsulam]; e fase do desenvolvimento da cultura sob redução de luz (testemunha; fase de plântula; período vegetativo; reprodutivo e todo o ciclo). A cultivar utilizada foi IRGA 424. Em laboratório, foi avaliado o peso de mil sementes, germinação, primeira contagem da germinação, teste de frio, condutividade elétrica e comprimento e massa da matéria seca da parte aérea e de raízes de plântulas. A semeadura mais tardia causa a produção de sementes de arroz com menor massa e qualidade fisiológica. A aplicação de bispiribaque sódico sobre o arroz semeado mais tardiamente, leva à redução do vigor das sementes produzidas. Com a redução artificial da luminosidade durante o período vegetativo, obtêm-se sementes de arroz com maior massa e qualidade fisiológica, já quando ocorre redução de luz por todo o ciclo da cultura, são produzidas sementes de pior qualidade.

ABSTRACTThe aim of this study was to evaluate the physiological quality of rice seeds with the application of herbicides in two sowing seasons, and for the artificial reduction of lighting at different stages of crop development. The field experiment, carried out in the 2012/2013 crop year, consisted of a 2x3x5 factorial, comprising the factors: sowing season (18/10 and 09/11); herbicide [control (weeding), bispyribac-sodium and penoxsulam]; and crop development phase under light reduction (control; seedling stage, vegetative phase, reproductive phase and the entire cycle). The cultivar used was IRGA 424. The following were evaluated in the laboratory: thousand-seed weight, germination, first germination count, cold test, electrical conductivity and the length and weight of seedling shoot and root dry matter. Late sowing results in the production of rice seeds of lower weight and physiological quality. The application of sodium-bispyribac on the rice that was sown later, leads to a reduction in the vigour of the produced seeds. With reductions in artificial lighting during the vegetative phase, rice seeds with greater mass and physiological quality are obtained, whereas when the lighting is a reduced for the entire crop cycle, poor quality seeds are produced.

O nitrogênio é o nutriente exigido em maior quantidade pela soja. Sua limitação pode comprometer a produtividade final da cultura. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito do nitrogênio suplementar nos componentes de rendimento da soja, com o uso de diferentes fontes, doses e épocas de aplicação. O ensaio foi realizado em área de lavoura, em Arroio Grande, RS. Os estádios reprodutivos em que se aplicou nitrogênio foram: R1, R3, R5.1, R5.2, R5.3, R5.4, R5.5, R6, e R7, com as fontes nitrato de amônio e amídica, nas doses de 0, 30, 60, 90 e 120 kg ha-1. Analisaram-se o número de vagens, o de grãos por vagem e a massa de mil grãos, dos terços inferior, médio, superior e o total na planta, bem como a produtividade. O delineamento experimental foi o de blocos ao acaso, com três repetições. Os dados foram submetidos à análise de variância e posterior análise de regressão. As variáveis que não apresentaram interação com doses foram analisadas separadamente, pelo teste de médias, utilizando-se Tukey, a 5 % de probabilidade. A aplicação de nitrogênio na fase reprodutiva da soja influenciou positivamente alguns componentes de rendimento. No entanto, não houve aumento de produtividade, possivelmente, por causa do estresse hídrico, no qual a cultura encontrava-se.

Nitrogen is the nutrient required in the largest amounts by soybean. Its limitation to the plants can compromise the final yield of the crop. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of additional nitrogen on soybean yield components through the use of different sources, doses and times of application. The study was carried out in a crop area in Arroio Grande, RS. The reproductive stages in which the nitrogen was applied were: R1; R3; R5.1; R5.2; R5.3; R5.4; R5.5; R6 and R7, via ammonium nitrate and amidic sources, in the following doses: 0, 30, 60, 90 and 120 kg ha-1. The variables evaluated were: number of pods, number of grains per pod and thousand grain weight of the lower, middle and upper thirds separately and total, as well as yield. Randomized blocks were performed with three replicates. Data were subjected to variance analysis and regression analysis was applied. The variables that did not show interaction with doses were analyzed by the Tukey's multiple comparison test, at 5% probability. The application of nitrogen in the soybean reproductive stages positively influenced some yield components. However, it did not increase the yield, possibly due to water stress to which the crop was subjected.

A luz é um fator importante nos processos de proteção ao frio nas plantas. O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar a relação entre temperaturas e quantidade e qualidade de luz sobre o desenvolvimento inicial de cultivares de arroz irrigado e biótipos de arroz vermelho. Foram realizados dois experimentos, sendo eles em laboratório e em casa de vegetação, durante os meses de Julho a Novembro de 2012. Os fatores estudados no experimento I foram: temperaturas (25 ºC e 18/13 ºC); cultivares/biótipos (IRGA 424 e PUITÁ INTA-CL/AV 6716 e AV 6722) e luz (branca, azul, verde, amarela e vermelha, sombreamentos de 86 e 93% e escuro). No experimento II os fatores foram: épocas (Agosto e Novembro); cultivares/biótipos (IRGA 424 e PUITÁ INTA-CL/AV 6716 e AV 6722); e luz (branca com recobrimento, branca, azul, verde, amarela e vermelha, sombreamentos de 86 e 93%). Avaliou-se plântulas normais, comprimento de parte aérea e raiz, massa da matéria seca da parte aérea e de raízes e área foliar. As cultivares e biótipos estudados têm comportamentos semelhantes em resposta à temperatura e luz durante o desenvolvimento inicial. A luz, especialmente no comprimento de onda do vermelho, apresenta aumento na tolerância ao frio em arroz.

Light is an important factor in the cold protection process in plants. The objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship between temperatures and levels of quantity and quality of light on the initial development of rice cultivars and red rice biotypes. Two experiments were conducted, in the laboratory and in the greenhouse, from July to November 2012. The factors studied in experiment I were: temperatures (25 ºC and 18/13 ºC); cultivars/biotypes (IRGA 424 and PUITÁ INTA-CL/AV 6716 and AV 6722) and light (white, blue, green, yellow and red, 86% and 93% shading and dark). In the second experiment, the factors were seasons (August and November); cultivars/biotypes (IRGA 424 and PUITÁ INTA-CL/AV 6716 and AV 6722) and light (white with cover, white, blue, green, yellow and red, 86% and 93% shading). Were evaluated normal seedlings, shoot and root length, shoot and root dry weight and leaf area. The cultivars and biotypes studied have a similar behavior in response to temperature and light during early development. Light, especially the red wavelength, has increased cold tolerance in rice.

O conforto térmico, cujo avaliação é um processo de caráter psicofisiológico, busca adaptar o ambiente para que este ofereça melhores condições de saúde, segurança, rendimento e bem-estar. Este artigo verifica a relação entre conforto térmico na sala de aula universitária e o rendimento da atenção e da memória dos estudantes. Métodos de avaliação objetivos e subjetivos foram aplicados nessa verificação, como o questionário baseado no modelo proposto por Batiz e Goedert, o teste das figuras de Rey e o cálculo do PMV e PPD pelas expressões de Fanger. Constatou-se uma coincidência da ordem de 90,9% entre o PMV calculado pelas equações de Fanger e a avaliação subjetiva medida pela aplicação do questionário, demonstrando que o questionário é uma ferramenta efetiva para avaliação do conforto térmico. Constatou-se que 70% dos avaliados obtiveram resultados positivos no teste de atenção e memória. Todos os alunos que estavam em condição de conforto apresentaram resultados positivos.

Thermal comfort is a psycho-physiological phenomenon that looks to environmental adaptations to provide better health conditions, and levels of safety, performance and comfort. This article examines the relationship between thermal comfort in university classrooms with students' attention and recall performance. Objective and subjective evaluation methods were applied, such as a questionnaire based on the proposed model by Batiz and Goedert, Figure of Rey Method and Fanger Method. It was observed that there is a 90.9 per cent coincidence between the PMV calculated and the subjective value measured. It shows that the questionnaire is an effective tool for evaluating thermal comfort. It was observed that 70 per cent of the students evaluated manifested a positive output in attention and memory tests. Positive results were obtained in the test by students in comfortable conditions.
