Discute os sentidos do modelo institucional das colônias na assistência psiquiátrica no Brasil, considerando suas diferentes configurações no contexto das políticas públicas de saúde na primeira metade do século XX. Toma como fio condutor a Colônia Juliano Moreira, fundada em 1924 no Rio de Janeiro. Demonstra o significado atribuído à concepção de colônia agrícola e sua importância na formatação da Colônia Juliano Moreira, para compreender como o ideário da colônia agrícola foi traduzido na concepção de hospital-colônia a partir dos anos 1940, quando essa instituição sofreu processo de acentuada expansão de sua estrutura física e de seus recursos terapêuticos.

The meanings given to the institutional model of the colonies in psychiatric care in Brazil are assessed, duly considering their different configurations in the context of public health policies in the first half of the twentieth century. The central thread of this analysis is the case of the Colônia Juliano Moreira, an institution founded in 1924 in Rio de Janeiro. It seeks to show the meaning attributed to the concept of agricultural colony and its importance in shaping the Colônia Juliano Moreira, in order to understand how the ideological precept of agricultural colony was translated into the concept of hospital-colony from the 1940s onwards, when this institution experienced a steady process of marked expansion of its physical structure and its therapeutic resources.

Analisa o modo como os psiquiatras brasileiros Henrique Roxo e Murillo de Campos conceituaram e distinguiram as categorias diagnósticas de demência precoce e esquizofrenia, no final da década de 1920, em artigos publicados no principal periódico psiquiátrico à época. Observa-se como ambos se apropriaram do conhecimento europeu que forjou tais categorias e como as representaram no contexto da institucionalização da psiquiatria no Brasil. Busca compreender como esse processo de nomeação e definição cientifica de diagnóstico se articulava à produção da diferença entre o que deveria ser considerado fenômeno, no que se refere à patologia mental.

This article analyzes how the Brazilian psychiatrists Henrique Roxo and Murillo de Campos understood and differentiated between the diagnostic categories dementia praecox and schizophrenia at the end of the 1920s in scientific articles published in the principal psychiatric journal of the time. We note how the aforementioned psychiatrists incorporated the European knowledge that created these diagnostic categories and how they represented them in the context of the institutionalization of psychiatry in Brazil. We seek to understand how this scientific diagnostic naming and defining process developed in conjunction with the definition of the difference between what should and should not be considered phenomena, with respect to mental pathologies.

Tomando como ponto de partida a representação erudita que situa Juliano Moreira como fundador da psiquiatria científica no Brasil, este trabalho analisa as concepções por ele veiculadas sobre doença mental, raça e sexualidade. Suas teorias constituíram uma transposição sui generis do pensamento do psiquiatra alemão Emil Kraepelin, ajudando na construção do ideário em prol do processo civilizatório brasileiro no início do século XX. Fundamentava-se em pressupostos organicistas, ao mesmo tempo em que se contrapunha à idéia corrente na época sobre as condições "naturais" brasileiras desfavoráveis como o clima e a raça. Analisando os trabalhos publicados por Juliano Moreira até 1920, relaciona-se aqui o modo como seu discurso científico discutia o tema da sexualidade, expressa sob a rubrica da "sífilis", da "reprodução" e do "casamento". Com relação a essa temática, Juliano Moreira não se valeu da idéia de uma natureza feminina degenerada, crescentemente difundida em meados do século XIX. Ainda que não desconsiderasse a idéia mais geral da degeneração, pertinente apenas ao nível das unidades orgânicas individuais, descartaria a correlação entre degeneração e natureza feminina, para se ater aos fundamentos médicos hegemônicos na primeira metade do século XIX, que articulavam as marcas diferenciais da mulher à sua fisiologia sexual, paradigmaticamente representada pela imagem do útero.

Taking as the point of departure the academic image of Juliano Moreira as the founder of scientific psychiatry in Brazil, this study analyzes the concepts he expressed on mental disease, race, and sexuality. His theories constituted a sui generis transposition of the thinking of German psychiatrist Emil Kraepelin, aiding in the construction of the ideals in defense of the Brazilian civilizational process in the early 20th century. He based his concepts on organicist premises, while arguing against the then-prevailing notion of so-called unfavorable "natural" Brazilian conditions such as climate and race. Analyzing the work published by Juliano Moreira until 1920, one sees how his scientific discourse discussed the theme of sexuality, expressed under the label of "syphilis", "reproduction", and "marriage". On this point, Juliano Moreira did not resort to the idea of a degenerated female nature, increasingly widespread in the mid-19th century. Although he did not rule out the more general notion of degeneration, pertinent only to the level of individual organic units, he did rule out the correlation between degeneration and female nature to focus on the hegemonic medical foundations of the first half of the 19th century, which linked differential female characteristics and female sexual physiology, represented paradigmatically by the image of the uterus.

Focaliza-se, neste sentido, o surgimento da primeira psiquiatria, alienista, e a reordenação, a partir da Segunda Guerra Mundial, de um novo conjunto de saberes e práticas terapêuticas aqui denominado de "nova psiquiatria". A partir de um estudo comparativo, argumenta-se sobre a tensão físico-moral constitutiva da construção social da Pessoa moderna em suas diferentes formas de atualização, e analisa-se as rupturas e continuida-des entre as idéias que fundamentam a psiquiatria alienista e a "nova psiquiatria".

In addressing psychiatry's representations of the notion of self, the article endeavors especially to show in what way these representations are an expression of the value individual and of the corollaries equality and freedom. In doing so, it focuses on the emergence of the first psychiatry [alienist] and on a reorganizing, as of World War II, of therapeutic know-ledge and practices, herein designated the new psychiatry. Drawing from a comparative study, the article discusses the physical-moral tension consti-tuent in the social construction of the modern self in its different forms of actualization and analyzes the breaks and continuities between the ideas underpinning alienist psychiatry and the new psychiatry.

Cet article traite des représentations de la notion de Personne propres à la psychiatrie. II tente notamment de démontrer qu'elles sont 1'expression de la valeur individu et des corollaires de 1'égalité et de la liberté. C'est pourquoi il met en évidence les premiers moments de la psychiatrie, en d'autres raots 1'époque de raliénisme, et 1'établissement, à partir de la Seconde Guerre Mondiale, d'un nouvel ensemble de savoirs et de pratiques thérapeutiques qui prendront ici le nom de "nouvelle psychiatrie". A partir d'une étude comparative, 1'auteur développe une argumentation sur la ten-sion physico-morale constitutive de la construction sociale de la Personne moderne à travers ses différentes formes d'action.
