ABSTRACT. Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) crops produce a poor yield in northeastern Brazil compared to the other regions. The goal of this study was to assess the effects of irrigated cropping systems and sowing seasons on cowpea yield and profitability in Vitória da Conquista, Bahia, Brazil. Field studies were performed in four experiments during the rainy and dry seasons during 2016/2017 and 2017/2018, which denoted harvests 1, 2, 3, and 4, respectively. A randomized block design was used for each experiment with four replicates and the following treatments for cropping systems: (1) manual weeding; (2) liming and manual weeding; (3) liming and phosphorus (P) fertilization at sowing, nitrogen (N) and potassium (K) topdressing fertilization, and chemical weed control; (4) liming and P fertilization at sowing, K topdressing fertilization, rhizobia inoculation, and chemical weed control; (5) liming and P fertilization at sowing, N and K topdressing fertilization, rhizobia inoculation, and chemical weed control; and (6) seed pretreatment with cobalt (Co) and molybdenum (Mo), liming and P fertilization at sowing, N and K topdressing fertilization, rhizobia inoculation, and chemical weed control. The technology added to cropping systems increased the number of pods per plant, pod length, seeds per pod, and 100-seed weight, irrespective of the rainy or dry sowing season. Economic analysis, in turn, showed that the technology decreased the total operating cost despite increasing the cost of mechanical operations, inputs, and materials because of the replacement of manual weeding by chemical weed control. However, these costs were not influenced by the sowing seasons. We concluded that technologically enhanced cropping systems, especially systems 4 and 6, improved grain yield and provided greater profitability, which translated into improved economic benefits for farmers. Conversely, the sowing season influenced profitability, which was higher for dry season harvests, when there was less product offered and prices became higher.

O experimento foi conduzido na Universidade Estadual do Sudoeste da Bahia, em Vitória da Conquista, Estado da Bahia, no período de novembro de 2005 a maio de 2007, com o objetivo de avaliar o manejo da irrigação, épocas de colheita e efeito do cloreto de mepiquat sobre características agronômicas da mandioca. Utilizou-se o delineamento em blocos casualizados com três repetições e 16 tratamentos em parcelas subsubdivididas, formados pelas combinações entre manejo da irrigação (ausência de irrigação, irrigação durante todo o ciclo, irrigação de novembro a abril e irrigação de novembro a abril, com retomada de novembro a abril do ano seguinte), épocas de colheita (aos nove e aos 18 meses) e cloreto de mepiquat (com e sem aplicação). A colheita aos 18 meses proporcionou incremento do peso da parte aérea e da produtividade de raízes tuberosas, de 16,89 para 36,73 t ha-1, e maior índice de colheita. Plantas irrigadas por todo o ciclo apresentaram maior produtividade de raízes tuberosas do que aquelas mantidas na ausência de irrigação. Quando irrigadas, as plantas produziram raízes tuberosas com maior porcentagem de massa seca e de amido. O cloreto de mepiquat aumentou a produtividade de amido e farinha de plantas irrigadas por todo o ciclo.

The experiment was performed at the campus of Universidade Estadual do Sudoeste da Bahia - UESB, in Vitória da Conquista, Bahia State, Brazil, from November 2005 to May 2007, aiming to evaluate irrigation management, harvest time and the mepiquat chloride effect on cassava agronomical characteristics. The study used randomized blocks delineation with three replications and sixteen treatments in subdivided lots, using the following combinations: irrigation management (lack and with irrigation during the whole cycle, irrigation from November to April, performed again from November to April of the following year), harvest time (nine, eighteen months) mepiquat chloride (with and without application). The harvest at 18 provided an increase on aerial part weight and on root productivity, showed an increase from 16.89 to 36.73 t ha-1, as well as a high harvest index. Irrigated plants during the whole cycle presented higher tuberous root productivity than the ones kept without irrigation. When irrigated, the plants produced tuberous roots with a higher percentage of dry matter and starch. The use of mepiquat chloride increased both the starch and the flour production of the irrigated plants during the whole cycle.

Com o objetivo de avaliar a influência de diferentes épocas de semeadura na produtividade e qualidade de cultivares de milho e sorgo para silagem e também verificar a possibilidade de substituição do milho pelo sorgo para produção de silagem, foram instalados experimentos em três épocas de semeadura, em área do Departamento de Agricultura da Universidade Federal de Lavras, no ano agrícola 2002/2003. Foram avaliados três grupos de cultivares - três cultivares de sorgo duplo propósito, três de sorgo forrageiro e três de milho, em três épocas de semeadura - 19/11/2002, 19/12/2002 e 18/1/2003). O delineamento utilizado foi o de blocos casualizados, em esquema fatorial 3 (grupos de cultivares) x 3 (épocas de semeadura), com quatro repetições. Avaliaram-se produtividade de matéria seca (MS), participação de panícula ou espiga na MS, e as porcentagens de proteína bruta, fibra em detergente neutro (FDN), fibra em detergente ácido (FDA) e lignina. Observou-se efeito significativo para cultivares e épocas de semeadura para todas as características avaliadas. Constatou-se a presença de interação cultivares*épocas para a produtividade de matéria seca (MS), participação de panícula ou espiga na MS e porcentagem de proteína bruta. Independentemente de época semeadura, com o milho se tem silagem com menor teor de fibra do que com qualquer tipo de sorgo e produtividade de matéria seca semelhante à do sorgo forrageiro e maior do que o sorgo duplo propósito. A maior produção de matéria seca de milho e sorgo, para forragem, é obtida na semeadura em novembro. Silagem de milho e sorgo de maior valor nutritivo é obtida na semeadura de janeiro. Do ponto de vista de produção e de qualidade nutricional da forragem, não é viável a substituição da silagem de milho pela de sorgo.

With the objective to evaluate the influence of different times of sowing in the productivity and silage quality of corn and sorghum cultivars and also of verifying the possibility of substitution of corn to sorghum to silage production, experiments were installed considering three times of sowing in area of the Department of Agriculture of the Federal University, during the agricultural year of 2002/2003. Three groups had been evaluated to cultivars (three of double purpose sorghum, three of forage sorghum and three of corn) at three times of sowing (19/11/2002, 19/12/2002, and 18/1/2003). The experimental design was of blocks randomized in factorial scheme 3 groups to cultivars (to cultivars) x 3 times of sowing (times), with four repetitions. Productivity of dry matter was evaluated (MS), participation of panicle or spike in the MS, and the rude protein percentages, fiber in neutral detergent, fiber in acid detergent and lignin. Significant effect was observed to cultivars, times of sowing to all characteristics evaluated. The presence of interaction cultivars*times was verified for the productivity of dry matter, participation of panicle or spike in the MS and the rude protein percentages. Independently of times of sowing, with the corn present silage with smaller fiber tenor than with any sorghum types, and productivity of dry matter similar to the one of forage sorghum and superior to the one of sorghum of double intention. The largest production of dry matter of corn and sorghum was obtained when the sowing is made in November. Corn and sorghum silage of larger nutritional value was obtained when the sowing was made in January. Under the production point of view and of quality nutritional of the forage, it is not viable the substitution of the corn for sorghum.

Este trabalho foi conduzido com o objetivo de avaliar a produção de matéria seca e a composição bromatológica da forragem de cultivares de milho submetidos a duas alturas de corte das plantas (altura 1 - 0,1 m e altura 2 - 0,8 m) em três anos de cultivo no município de Lavras, MG. Os experimentos foram instalados em área experimental do Departamento de Agricultura da Universidade Federal de Lavras (UFLA) nas safras agrícolas 1998/1999, 1999/2000 e 2000/2001, empregando-se cinco cultivares de milho no primeiro ano e seis nos anos seguintes. Os experimentos foram conduzidos sob o delineamento de blocos casualizados em esquema fatorial 5 x 2 e 6 x 2, sendo cinco ou seis cultivares de milho e duas alturas de corte, com três repetições. Avaliaram-se as características produtividade de matéria seca (MS) e teores de proteína bruta (PB), fibra em detergente neutro (FDN) e fibra em detergente ácido (FDA) na MS. Detectou-se efeito significativo das alturas de corte em todas as características estudadas. Os teores de PB aumentaram e os de FDN e FDA diminuíram com a elevação da altura de corte das plantas. Comparando-se as duas alturas de corte, verificou-se que houve uma redução de 3,3 t.ha-1 na produtividade de MS, um aumento de 0,6% no teor de PB, uma redução de 4,4% no teor de FDN e uma redução de 3,9% no teor de FDA com a elevação da altura de corte de 0,1 para 0,8 m. Os resultados obtidos permitiram concluir que a elevação da altura de corte, embora tenha contribuído para a diminuição da produção de MS, proporcionou uma melhoria na qualidade da forragem em decorrência da parte mais fibrosa e menos digestível da planta de milho não ter sido colhida.

This work was conducted with the purpose of evaluating dry matter yield and the chemical nutritive composition of forage of corn cultivars submitted to cutting heights of the plants (height 1 0,1 m, and height 2 0,8 m) in three growing years. The experiments were set up in an experimental area of the Agriculture Department of the Federal University of Lavras (UFLA) in the agricultural crops of 1998/1999, 1999/2000 and 2000/2001, where five corn cultivars were utilized in the first year and six corn cultivars in the following years. The experiments were conducted in the randomized block design in a 5 x 2 and 6 x 2 factorial scheme, where as five and six corn cultivars and two cutting height, with three replications. The characteristics of dry matter yield (DMY), crude protein (CP), neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and acid detergent fiber (ADF) were evaluated. A significant effect was found for cutting heights in all characteristics evaluated. Crude protein contents increased and NDF and ADF contents decreased with the increase of the cutting height of the plants. Comparing the two cutting heights, it was found that there was a reduction in yield of 3.3 ton.ha-1 for DMY, an increase of 0.6% in crude protein content, a reduction of 4.4% in the percent of NDF and a decrease of 3.9% in the percent of ADF. The results obtained allowed to conclude that the elevation of the cutting height, although had contributed to the decrease of dry matter yield provided, an improvement in forage quality, due to the most fibrous and least digestible part of the corn plant have not been harvested.

As sementes arredondadas do ápice e da base da espiga de milho são separadas das achatadas quanto à espessura durante o beneficiamento, não sendo bem aceitas pelos agricultores. No entanto, no caso de produção de sementes básicas, essas sementes arredondadas têm sido comercializadas em razão de seu alto custo de produção. Com isso, objetivou-se neste trabalho estudar em duas cultivares de milho (AL 25 e BRS 106) o comportamento de sementes localizadas em pontos distintos da espiga (base, meio e ápice) quanto ao seu desempenho. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o inteiramente casualizado em esquema fatorial 2x3x2 (2 genótipos; 3 localizações na espiga; submetidas ou não ao envelhecimento acelerado) com quatro repetições. A avaliação do desempenho das sementes foi realizada por meio dos testes de germinação, velocidade de germinação, emergência em solo + areia e teste de frio, e a sanidade, por meio do "Blotter test". Conclui-se que as sementes arredondadas localizadas no ápice da espiga apresentam desempenho inferior às sementes da base e do terço médio da espiga.

Rounded seeds at the end and at the base of corn ears are separated from the flat ones by thickness during the processing as the former not well being accepted by farmers. Nevertheless, in the case of production of basic seeds, those rounded seeds have been marketed due to their high production cost. So, in this work it was aimed to study, in two corn cultivars AL 25 and BRS 106, the behavior of seeds situated on distinct spots on the ear (base, middle, and tip) regarding their performance. The experimental design was completely randomized in a 2 ' 3 ' 2 factorial scheme (two genotypes, three positions on the ear, submitted or not to accelerated aging) with four replications. Evaluation of performance was done by means of germination tests, germination velocity, emergence on soil + sand, cold test, and sanity by means of the "Blotter test''. It is concluded that a round seeds situated at the tip of the ear performs inferiorly compared to seeds at base and at the middle of the ear.
