Abstract Piper species are important components of the understory in tropical and subtropical forests, and some species are of economic and medicinal importance. This genus has been studied in different areas of science. However, some questions remain unanswered after the new circumscription as proposed by phylogenetic studies. Here, I review different aspects related to the reproductive biology of Piper species (phenology, sexual expression, floral biology, pollination and mating systems), comparing the results between Neotropical (representing most of the studies carried out so far) and Paleotropical regions. Seventy-five species were analyzed. Some patterns can be observed, mainly in Neotropical species, such as the predominance of annual flowering and fruiting, dichogamy (generally incomplete protogyny) with gradual and sequential exposure of stigmas, asynchronous pollen release, and pollination by insects. Some aspects have been poorly studied, such as variations in sexual expression, the efficiency of different pollinators, and the chemical composition of floral volatiles associated with their role in pollination. In addition, I discuss remaining gaps and further studies that are required, mainly on Paleotropical Piper species, to obtain basic information on the reproductive biology of these plants. From this, comparisons with Neotropical species can be made, allowing the verification of patterns in this genus.

Resumo Espécies de Piper são importantes componentes do sub-bosque em florestas tropicais e subtropicais, e algumas espécies são de importância econômica e medicinal. Esse gênero tem sido estudado em diferentes áreas da ciência. No entanto, algumas questões permanecem sem resposta após a nova circunscrição proposta pelos estudos filogenéticos. Aqui, reviso diferentes aspectos relacionados à biologia reprodutiva das espécies de Piper (fenologia, expressão sexual, biologia floral, sistemas de polinização e reprodutivo), comparando os resultados entre as regiões neotropical (representando a maioria dos estudos realizados até agora) e paleotropical. 75 espécies foram analisadas. Alguns padrões podem ser observados, principalmente em espécies neotropicais, como a predominância de floração e frutificação anual, dicogamia (geralmente protoginia incompleta) com exposição gradual e sequencial dos estigmas, liberação assíncrona de pólen e polinização por insetos. Alguns aspectos têm sido pouco estudados, como as variações na expressão sexual, a eficiência dos diferentes polinizadores e a composição química dos voláteis florais associados ao seu papel na polinização. Além disso, discuto as lacunas remanescentes e são necessários mais estudos, principalmente sobre as espécies de Piper paleotropicais, para obter informações básicas sobre a biologia reprodutiva dessas plantas. A partir disso, comparações com espécies neotropicais podem ser feitas, permitindo a verificação de padrões nesse gênero.

Resumo Analisamos a fenologia reprodutiva de Ditassa burchellii e a influência de fatores abióticos em suas fenofases. O estudo foi realizado em indivíduos de população natural em floresta estacional semidecídua (Viçosa, Minas Gerais, sudeste do Brasil). Quantificamos os índices de atividade e de intensidade das seguintes fenofases: botões florais, flores, frutos imaturos e frutos deiscentes. Para testar a sazonalidade dessas fenofases, analisamos cada uma usando o teste de Rayleigh. Avaliamos se houve associação entre as variáveis abióticas (temperatura média, precipitação e comprimento do dia) e as fenofases, no mês de ocorrência e também nos três meses anteriores à ocorrência de cada fenofase. As fenofases ocorreram principalmente no fim da estação chuvosa e durante a estação seca, com períodos sobrepostos, mas com picos sequenciais. Os períodos de ocorrência das fenofases reprodutivas foram similares aos de outras espécies de lianas e foram relacionados principalmente com o modo de dispersão. Todas as fenofases foram sazonais e foram associadas a pelo menos uma das variáveis abióticas, no mês de sua ocorrência ou nos meses anteriores.

Abstract We analyzed the reproductive phenology of Ditassa burchellii and the influence of abiotic factors on the species phenophases. The study was conducted on individuals of a natural population from a semi-deciduous forest (Viçosa municipality, Minas Gerais state, southeastern Brazil). We quantified the activity and intensity indices of the following phenophases: flower bud, flower, immature fruit, and dehiscent fruit. To test for seasonality of phenophases, we analyzed each of them using Rayleigh test. We evaluated whether there was any association between abiotic variables (mean temperature, rainfall, and day length) and phenophases, in the month of occurrence and in the three months prior to the occurrence of each phenophase. The analyzed phenophases occurred mainly at the end of the rainy season and during the dry season, with overlapping periods, but with sequential peaks. The periods of occurrence of reproductive phenophases were similar to the ones in other climbing species and were mainly related to the dispersal mode. All phenophases were seasonal and were associated with at least one abiotic variable, either in the month of their occurrence or in the previous months.

Studies on the reproductive biology of Dorstenia species are scarce. We analyzed the sexuality, floral biology, and diaspore dispersal of Dorstenia arifolia and D. bonijesu, including their breeding systems and pollinators, in natural populations from Minas Gerais state, southeastern Brazil. We report here, for the first time, the occurrence of both unisexual (male) and bisexual coenanthia on the same individuals of Dorstenia arifolia, while only bisexual coenanthia were observed in D. bonijesu. In both species all coenanthia were long-lived and bisexual coenanthia were protogynous. We observed the occurrence of self-compatibility and myophily in Dorstenia arifolia, a species which was pollinated by small Lauxaniidae flies. Those insects not only used pollen as food resource but they also used coenanthia as oviposition sites, which is the first report to the studied species. Dorstenia bonijesu produced seeds, even having no floral visitors, suggesting an apomictic mechanism, which is a new breeding system reported to the genus. Both studied species are autochorous, but D. bonijesu also exhibited a peculiar type of hydrochory. The novelties reported herein indicate the need of additional studies to improve the understanding of the reproductive attributes of Dorstenia species.

Los estudios sobre la biología reproductiva de las especies de Dorstenia son escasos. En este artículo analizamos la sexualidad, la biología floral y dispersión de las diásporas de Dorstenia arifolia y D. bonijesu, incluyendo sus sistemas reproductivos y polinizadores, en poblaciones naturales localizadas en el estado de Minas Gerais, sudeste de Brasil. Registramos, por primera vez, la presencia de cenantos unisexuales (masculinos) y bisexuales en un mismo individuo de Dorstenia arifolia; en cambio, sólo se observaron cenantos bisexuales en D. bonijesu. En ambas especies los cenantos fueron de larga duración, y los cenantos bisexuales exhibieron protoginia. Registramos autocompatibilidad y miofilia en Dorstenia arifolia, que fue polinizada por pequeñas moscas de la familia Lauxaniidae. Estos insectos no solo usan el polen como alimento sino que utilizan el cenanto como sitio de oviposición, siendo este un hecho registrado por primera vez para para las especies estudiadas. Dorstenia bonijesu, aún sin visitantes florales, también produce semillas mediante apomixis, un nuevo sistema reproductivo para el género. Las dos especies estudiadas son autocóricas; sin embargo, Dorstenia bonijesu exhibió un tipo peculiar de hidrocoria. Las novedades aquí registradas indican la necesidad de estudios adicionales para mejorar la comprensión de los atributos reproductivos de las especies de Dorstenia.

As trilhas podem influenciar a composição e a estrutura de comunidades vegetais, por causar modificações abióticas em seu local de ocorrência e proximidades. Buscando compreender o comportamento florístico e estrutural da vegetação em relação a trilhas, foram realizados dois levantamentos na Floresta Atlântica do sudeste brasileiro, no Parque Estadual das Fontes do Ipiranga, São Paulo, SP, e na Mata da Biologia, Viçosa, MG, utilizando critérios de inclusão e áreas amostrais idênticos. Na análise de dados, optou-se pela ANOVA e teste qui-quadrado. Houve variação na densidade e no número de indivíduos mortos em pé em ambos os levantamentos, com maiores valores na borda da trilha. Ambos os fragmentos não apresentaram relação entre distribuição de indivíduos por síndrome de dispersão e distância da trilha. Verificou-se que as trilhas exercem interferência sobre a vegetação arbórea em ambos os fragmentos e, assim, sugere-se que programas de restauração florestal passem a considerar as trilhas como fonte potencial de impacto.

Forest trails can influence the composition and structure of plant communities by causing abiotic changes along their course and in the vicinity. To understand the behavior of the floristic and structural vegetation along the trails, two surveys were conducted in the Atlantic Forest of southeastern Brazil, in the "Parque Estadual das Fontes do Ipiranga", São Paulo, State of São Paulo, and in the "Mata da Biologia", Viçosa, State of Minas Gerais, using identical minimum diameter at breast height and sample areas. For the data analysis, ANOVA and chi-square test were chosen. There were variations in density and number of upright dead plants in both surveys, with higher values alongside the trail. Both fragments showed no relationship between distribution of plants per dispersion syndrome and distance from the trail. It was found that the trails interfere with tree vegetation in both fragments, and it is suggested that trails should come to be treated as a potential source of impact in forest restoration programs.
