ABSTRACT The exotic land gastropod Ovachlamys fulgens (Gude, 1900), aka the jumping snail, was registered in Eldorado city, Misiones province, constituting the first documented record of that species in Argentina-and for all of South America as well. Identities of the individuals were confirmed through morphological examination, and by a DNA sequencing of the cytochrome oxidase subunit I gene. DNA sequences for the mitochondrial 16S-rRNA and the nuclear 18S-rRNA genes were also obtained from the morphologically-confirmed specimens to gain insights into the genetic background of this species in Argentina, and as additional markers for enhancing the rapidity of identification by governmental authorities who are responsible for managing the presence of exotic species. Different size classes suggested that the species had successfully reproduced and become established in the locality. Ovachlamys fulgens is emphasized in the literature as being a serious pest to orchids. Misiones province harbors a high species richness of orchids, representing about one half of the known species in Argentina. Owing to the use of the orchid as an ornamental plant, the commercial trade could have facilitated the introduction of the species into Argentina. Control measures, preventive education, and surveillance are needed to prevent the further spread of this snail.

Variation in shape among a living and 2 extinct aquatic snails of the genus Aylacostoma, using a geometric morphometric method of thin plate splines and multivariate analysis was investigated. The analysis was performed to evaluate the diagnostic capability of this method and to explore shell shape differences, due to the lack of other data, in an attempt to answer why only 1 of the species persisted in the wild. Sixteen landmarks in a bi-dimensional space for 32 shells of type, paratype and reference specimens deposited in museums of Argentina were defined. Analysis was successful in assigning individual specimens to particular species. Statistically significant differences in last whorl, aperture, and spire were found for the first 4 non-uniform components explaining an 85% of local variation observed. Differences could be related to a differential use of habitat and/or to the degree of exposure to water current. More globose shell found in the extinct species could be associated to habitats and substrata with the highest water currents, whereas the more stylized shell in the third species could be related to a preference for more protected habitats, like those where it presently occurs.

La variación de forma entre una especie viviente y dos extintas de caracoles acuáticos del género Aylacostoma, fue investigada mediante el método de morfometría geométrica de "thin plate splines" y análisis multivariado. El análisis se realizó para evaluar la capacidad diagnóstica del método y explorar las diferencias de forma de conchilla, debido a la falta de otros datos, en un intento por responder por qué sólo una de las especies persistió en la naturaleza. Dieciséis "landmarks" fueron definidos en un espacio bi-dimensional para 32 conchillas de ejemplares tipo, paratipo y de referencia depositados en museos de Argentina. El análisis fue exitoso en la asignación de los individuos a especies particulares. Se encontraron diferencias significativas en el último anfracto, apertura y espira respecto de los 4 primeros componentes no uniformes, que explicaron el 85% de la variación observada. Estas diferencias podrían vincularse a un uso diferencial del hábitat y/o al grado de exposición a la corriente. La conchilla más globosa en las especies extintas pudo estar asociada a hábitats y sustratos con mayores corrientes, mientras que la conchilla más estilizada en la tercera especie podría estar relacionada con la preferencia por hábitats más protegidos, como los que actualmente habita.

Melanoides tuberculatus is a cosmopolitan gastropod that has invaded and has now spread into most countries of the American continent. Introduction pathways remain unknown in most cases. This work draws attention on the colonization risks of this species in the Río de la Plata area as a consequence of its record in flower and pet shops - in the city of La Plata (Buenos Aires, Argentina) - in which limnic species are sold. The species was identified at the beginning of 2009 within a lot of 29 specimens from a shop, and this is the southernmost record of this species in the Plata Basin. Subsequent surveys in 3 commercial shops in the same city revealed its presence in 2 of them. This was related to the purchase of ornamental plants by the shops. Identification of this species in the city of La Plata should be carefully assessed, because of the potential consequences that settlement of this mollusk in the Río de la Plata may have on displacement of the local fauna and on public health.

Melanoides tuberculatus es un gasterópodo cosmopolita que ha invadido y se ha establecido en casi todos los países del continente americano, desconociéndose en la mayoría de los casos el origen de su introducción. En este trabajo se menciona el riesgo de establecimiento de esta especie en áreas de influencia del Río de la Plata como consecuencia de su registro en acuarios de la ciudad de La Plata (Buenos Aires, Argentina) dedicados a la venta de flora y fauna limnética. A principios de 2009, la especie fue identificada a partir de 26 ejemplares procedentes de un comercio, siendo éste el registro más austral de la especie para una localidad de la cuenca del Plata. Revisiones posteriores en 3 locales comerciales de la ciudad confirmaron la presencia de la especie en 2 de ellos. Dicha presencia se relacionó con la adquisición de plantas ornamentales por parte de los establecimientos. La identificación del gasterópodo en la ciudad de La Plata debe considerarse cuidadosamente, debido a las posibles consecuencias que tendría la liberación accidental de este molusco en el Río de la Plata en lo relacionado con el desplazamiento de fauna local y salud pública.
