Abstract Objective Advances in medicine have increased the life expectancy of pediatric patients with chronic illnesses, and challenges with the guided transition of adolescents and young adults from pediatric clinics to adult clinics have grown. The aim of this study was to better understand readiness and factors related to this transition process in Brazil. Method In this cross-sectional study of 308 patients aged from 16 to 21 years under follow-up in pediatric specialties, the degree of readiness for transition was assessed using the Transition Readiness Assessment Questionnaire (TRAQ) and its domains. Associations with demographic data, clinical data, socio-economic level, medication adherence, family functionality, and parental satisfaction with health care were evaluated. Results The median TRAQ score was 3.7 (3.2 - 4.2). Better readiness was associated with female patients, socio-economic class A-B, current active employment, higher level of education, not failing any school year, attending medical appointments alone, functional family, and a good knowledge of disease and medications. A low correlation was observed between TRAQ and age. TRAQ presented good internal consistency (alpha-Cronbach 0.86). In the multiple linear regression, TRAQ score showed a significant association with female gender, advanced age, socio-economic class A-B, better knowledge of disease and medications, and independence to attend appointments alone. Conclusion TRAQ instrument can guide healthcare professionals to identify specific areas of approach, in order to support adolescents with chronic disease to set goals for their own personal development and improve their readiness to enter into the adult healthcare system. In this study, some factors were related to better TRAQ scores.

Abstract Objective: To identify factors associated with C-peptide levels at the diagnosis of type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). Material and Methods: Retrospective review of the clinical records of patients with newly diagnosed T1DM admitted to a Portuguese reference center between August 2010 and July 2019. Results: The study included 109 subjects, with a mean age at T1DM diagnosis of 8.6 years and 29.4% already showing puberty development. The mean body mass index (BMI) z-score was 0.09. Subjects presented a median fasting C-peptide level of 0.46 ng/mL and a median hemoglobin A1C (HbA1C) of 10.85%. Diabetic ketoacidosis was identified in 22% of patients. A positive correlation was found between fasting C-peptide levels and age at diagnosis (p<0.001) and between fasting C-peptide levels and BMI z-score (p=0.041). Higher C-peptide levels were found in overweight/obese (p=0.008) and pubertal (p<0.001) individuals. C-peptide levels were found to be correlated with serum bicarbonate (p=0.005) but not with venous pH, HbA1C, or previous symptom duration. No statistically significant differences were observed in fasting C-peptide levels according to gender, diabetes autoantibodies, T1DM family history, or seasonality. Conclusion: Older, pubertal, and overweight/obese children presented higher C-peptide levels. In the acute setting, serum bicarbonate was the biochemical parameter that best correlated with residual β-cell function.

Resumo Objetivos: Identificar fatores relacionados com os níveis de peptídeo C ao diagnóstico de diabetes mellitus tipo 1 (DM1). Material e Métodos: Revisão retrospetiva dos processos clínicos de doentes diagnosticados com DM1 entre agosto de 2010 e julho de 2019 num centro de referência português. Resultados: O estudo incluiu 109 participantes, com idade média de 8.6 anos e 29.4% púberes. O z-score médio do índice de massa corporal (IMC) foi 0.09. O nível de peptídeo C em jejum mediano foi 0.46 ng/mL e a hemoglobina A1C (HbA1C) mediana foi 10.85%. Vinte e dois por cento dos casos apresentaram-se com cetoacidose diabética. Foi observada uma correlação positiva significativa entre o nível de peptídeo C e a idade (p<0.001) e o nível de peptídeo C e o z-score do IMC (p=0.041). Foram detetados níveis mais elevados de peptídeo C em crianças com excesso de peso/obesidade (p=0.008) e púberes (p<0.001). Os níveis de peptídeo C correlacionaram-se positivamente com os níveis séricos de bicarbonato (p=0.005), mas não com o pH venoso, HbA1C ou duração dos sintomas anteriores. Não foram registadas diferenças estatisticamente significativas nos níveis de peptídeo C em jejum em função do sexo, autoanticorpos para a DM1, história familiar de DM1 e sazonalidade. Conclusão: Os doentes mais velhos, púberes e com excesso de peso/obesidade apresentaram níveis mais elevados de peptídeo C ao diagnóstico. Em contexto agudo, o bicarbonato sérico foi o parâmetro bioquímico que melhor se correlacionou com a função residual das células β.

ABSTRACT Objective: To identify multimorbidity patterns in women in southern Brazil, and its relationship with sociodemographic, lifestyle characteristics, and nutritional status, as well as to explore the main independent risk factor for the identified patterns. Subjects and methods: This is a cross-sectional, population-based study with 1,128 women (20-69 years), southern Brazil. Chronic conditions were identified using the therapeutic and chemical anatomical classification of continuous use of medications. Multimorbidity was assessed as ≥2 or ≥3 chronic conditions to identify dyads and triads. Poisson regression was used to explore risk factors in the different adjustment models. As independent variables evaluated, in addition to sociodemographic characteristics, lifestyle variables were included: consumption of fruits and vegetables, physical activity, alcohol consumption, smoking and nutritional status. Results: Eleven dyads (frequencies between 2.0% and 6.4%) and three triads (frequencies between 1.9% and 2.1%) of morbidities were identified in the study. Aging was related to a higher prevalence of all patterns, and obesity was a risk factor for multimorbidity patterns that contained conditions related to the cardiovascular and metabolic system and mental health. After adjustment, obesity increased the probability of “hypertension + common mental disorders (CMD)” (PR 3.63; 95% CI 1.94-6.78) and “dyslipidemia + CMD” (PR 3.69; 95% CI 1.08-12.65) by more than three times. Conclusion: This study identified common and important diseases in the patterns, associated with a common risk factor, obesity, that must be addressed by public health policies to prevent multimorbidity.

ABSTRACT: Under the perspective guided by Darnton (1986), this article aims to capture the interpretations made by Ataliba Antonio de Oliveira about the new school movement. It is about a teacher from São Paulo who followed and resisted closely and from within the onslaughts and attempts at pedagogical renewal in progress in the São Paulo school system. By writing more than two hundred chronicles, interpreting among other themes the initiatives of the Escolanovistas in São Paulo, Ataliba de Oliveira pointed out the errors that characterized “the failure of new school reform”. After inventorying and analyzing these chronicles, this article intends to answer the question: How did Ataliba de Oliveira interpret the new school movement and the tentatives of inserting this pedagogical doctrine in the Paulista school apparatus between 1930 and 1940? The comparative logical structures the most of the chronicles, and through them, are revealed his most scathing criticism to the reform, the reformers, and the educational consequences of those actions. He also revealed the patterns that he intended to preserve. Taken together, the chronicles of Ataliba de Oliveira made up the interpretation that “the failure of new school reform” occurred because its apologists did not consider the data and situations of the Paulista school reality, nor the conditions faced by teachers and students in the educational task.

RESUMEN: Desde una perspectiva de análisis guiada por Darnton (1986), este artículo tuv como objetivo capturar las interpretaciones de Ataliba Antonio de Oliveira sobre el movimiento de la escuela nueva. Se trata de un maestro paulista que siguió y resistió de cerca y desde dentro las embestidas e intentos de renovación pedagógica en curso en el sistema escolar paulista. Al escribir más de doscientas crónicas, interpretando entre otros temas las iniciativas de los escolanovistas en São Paulo, Ataliba de Oliveira señaló los errores que caracterizaron “el fracaso de la reforma escolanovista”. Después de inventariar y analizar esas crónicas, este artículo buscó responder al siguiente problema: ¿Cómo interpretó Ataliba de Oliveira el movimiento de la escuela nueva y los intentos de insertar esta doctrina pedagógica en el sistema escolar paulista, entre las décadas de 1930 y 1940? La lógica comparada estructura la mayor parte de las crónicas y, a través de ella, se revelan los puntos sobre los que se desvelan las críticas más contundentes del autor a la reforma, a los reformadores y a las consecuencias educativas de estas acciones, así como el patrón de obra que quiso preservar. En conjunto, los textos de Ataliba de Oliveira construyeron la interpretación de que “el fracaso de la reforma escolanovista” ocurrió porque sus apologistas no supieron leer el ejemplo del pasado.

RESUMO: Sob uma perspectiva de análise orientada por Darnton (1986), este artigo objetivou capturar as interpretações de Ataliba Antonio de Oliveira acerca do movimento da escola nova. Trata-se de um professor paulista que acompanhou e resistiu de perto e por dentro às investidas e tentativas da renovação pedagógica em curso do aparelho escolar paulista. Ao escrever mais de duas centenas de crônicas, interpretando, entre outros temas, as iniciativas dos escolanovistas em São Paulo, Ataliba de Oliveira apontou os erros que caracterizaram “o fracasso da reforma escolanovista”. Após inventariar e analisar essas crônicas, este artigo buscou responder a seguinte problemática: como Ataliba de Oliveira interpretou o movimento da escola nova e as tentativas de inserção dessa doutrina pedagógica no aparelho escolar paulista, entre as décadas de 1930 e 1940? A lógica comparativa estrutura a maior parte das crônicas e, por meio dela, revelam-se os pontos sobre os quais incidem críticas mais contundentes do autor à reforma, aos reformadores e às consequências educacionais dessas ações, bem como o padrão de trabalho que ele desejava preservar. Abstract Objective To determine the frequency of radiographic changes in the temporomandibular joint, in a representative population of patients with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA) and to compare with findings in healthy controls matched by sex and age. Patients and Methods One hundred and thirty-seven panoramic radiographies (PR) from JIA patients of a pediatric rheumatology outpatient clinic were prospectively evaluated and compared to 137 PR from healthy individuals. Results 102 (74.5%) JIA patients and 47 (34.3%) controls showed at least one radiological alteration (p < 0.001). The following radiographic alterations were more frequently observed in JIA patients than in controls: erosion (p < 0.001), altered condylar morphology (p < 0.001), disproportion between condylar process and the coronoid process (p < 0.001) and accentuated curve in the antegonial notch (p = 0.002). Twenty patients (14.6%) presented the four radiographic alterations simultaneously compared to only two controls (1.5%) (p < 0.001). Conclusion Due to the difference in the frequency of findings in the PR of patients and controls, we concluded that PR has value as a screening tool. In the presence of major changes in the mandible head in the PR of patients with a confirmed diagnosis of JIA, MRI should be considered to detect an active inflammatory process in this joint.

ABSTRACT Introduction. The behavior of COVID-19 is influenced by diverse social differentials that transcend demographic variables and include morbidity, the conditions of their homes, family dynamics, job performance, gender roles and stereotypes, care tasks, habits, and behaviors of life and consumption, among others. Methods. Statistical and demographic analysis and tools of metric studies of the information were used. Results and Discussion. The research showed the importance of incorporating into the analysis of the behavior of COVID-19 in Cuba the influence of social and epidemiological differentials determined by skin color, marital status, employment status, income levels, types of families, mobility, hygienic environmental conditions, access to health services, among others, which can place populations in greater or lesser conditions of vulnerability. Conclusions: The composition and dynamics of the population together with other social differentials are determinants of the behavior and expression of the pandemic. The crossing of epidemiological factors with the analysis of containment measures and the composition and structure of the affected population allows for the design of health policies that are more adjusted to the needs of the pandemic. Distance psychological counseling makes it possible to identify and deal with situations related to confinement and changes in life routines that affect the mental health of different groups of people.

RESUMEN Introducción. El comportamiento de la COVID-19 está influenciado por diferenciales sociales que trascienden las variables demográficas e incluyen la morbilidad, las condiciones de sus viviendas, las dinámicas familiares, el desempeño laboral, los roles y estereotipos de género, las tareas de cuidado, los hábitos y comportamientos de vida y consumo, entre otros. Métodos. Se empleó el análisis estadístico y demográfico y herramientas de los estudios métricos. Resultados y Discusión. La investigación mostró la importancia de incorporar a los análisis del comportamiento de la COVID-19 en Cuba la influencia de diferenciales sociales y epidemiológicos determinados por el color de la piel, el estado conyugal, la situación laboral, los niveles de ingreso, los tipos de familias, la movilidad, las condiciones higiénico ambientales, el acceso a los servicios de salud, entre otros, que pueden ubicar a las poblaciones en mayores o menores condiciones de vulnerabilidad. Conclusiones, la composición y la dinámica de la población junto a otros diferenciales sociales son determinantes del comportamiento de la pandemia. El cruzamiento de los factores epidemiológicos con el análisis de las medidas de contención y la composición y estructura de población afectada permite diseñar políticas sanitarias más ajustadas a las necesidades de la pandemia. La orientación psicológica a distancia permite identificar y atender situaciones vinculadas al confinamiento y los cambios en las rutinas de vida que afectan la salud mental de diferentes grupos de personas.

ABSTRACT Introduction: It has been suggested that preeclampsia can be prevented by vitamin E and C intake, given the pathophysiological mechanism of this disease. Objective: To determine the joint efficacy of vitamin C and E in the prevention of preeclampsia. Methods: Systematic review of randomized clinical trials. A search of pubmed/medline, SCOPUS, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, and Clinical Trials databases was performed. The risk of bias of the randomized clinical trials was assessed using the Cochrane tool version 2. A random-effects meta-analysis was performed and relative risks were calculated, with corresponding 95 % confidence intervals. Results: Seven studies were included (n= 1 475). No statistically significant association of treatment with vitamin C and E supplementation was found with respect to preeclampsia (relative risks: 1.03; 95 % CI 0.78-1.26). Conclusions: Dual vitamin C and E supplementation does not prevent preeclampsia in pregnant women at risk for the disease.

RESUMEN Introducción: Se ha sugerido que la preeclampsia puede ser prevenida por la ingesta de vitamina E y C, dado el mecanismo fisiopatológico de esta enfermedad. Objetivo: Determinar la eficacia conjunta de la vitamina C y E en la prevención de la preeclamsia. Métodos: Revisión sistemática de ensayos clínicos aleatorizados. Se realizó una búsqueda en las bases de datos pubmed/medline, SCOPUS, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, y Clinical Trials. El riesgo de sesgo de los ensayos clínicos aleatorios se evaluó mediante la herramienta Cochrane versión 2. Se realizó un metanálisis de efectos aleatorios y se calcularon los riesgos relativos, con los correspondientes intervalos de confianza al 95 %. Resultados: Se incluyeron 7 estudios (n= 1 475). No se encontró asociación estadísticamente significativa del tratamiento con suplementación de vitamina C y E con respecto a la preeclampsia (riesgo relativo: 1,03; IC95 %: 0,78-1,26). Conclusiones: La suplementación dual de vitamina C y E no previene la preeclamsia en gestantes con riesgo de padecer la enfermedad.

Resumen Las tecnologías han logrado romper barreras de distancia y tiempo, lo que implica nuevos retos para la educación. Lograr Entornos Virtuales de Enseñanza y Aprendizaje (EVEA) que promuevan la participación, motivación y desempeño de los estudiantes, sin duda, constituye un reto para los docentes de hoy. En este sentido la gamificación de estos entornos puede ser un aporte para los procesos educativos mediados por tecnologías digitales. En este trabajo se presenta un estudio sistemático de experiencias desarrolladas en EVEA gamificados, donde se analiza la presencia: social, cognitiva y docente, para encontrar las relaciones entre propuestas de gamificación en estos entornos y su impacto en la presencia. Para ello se realizó una revisión sistemática de la literatura, donde inicialmente se registraron un total de 748 estudios, luego de aplicar el protocolo propuesto por Bárbara Kitchenham se obtiene una muestra final de siete artículos. Como resultado, se observa que las experiencias analizadas promueven las presencias: social, cognitiva y docente; pero la presencia más impactada resulta ser la social.

Abstract Technologies have managed to break barriers of distance and time, which implies new challenges for education. To achieve Virtual Teaching and Learning Environments (TLVE) that promote the participation, motivation and performance of students, constitutes a challenge for today's teachers. In this sense, the gamification of these environments can be a contribution to educational processes mediated by digital technologies. This paper presents a systematic study of experiences developed in gamified TLVE, where presence is analyzed: social, cognitive and educational, in order to find relationships between gamification proposals in these environments and their impact on presence. For this, a systematic literature review was carried out, where a total of 748 studies were initially registered. After applying the protocol proposed by Bárbara Kitchenham, a final sample of seven articles is obtained. As a result, it is observed that the experiences analyzed promote social, cognitive and teaching presence; but the impacted presence turns out to be social.

After inventorying and analyzing these chronicles, this article intends to answer the question: How did Ataliba de Oliveira interpret the new school movement and the tentatives of inserting this pedagogical doctrine in the Paulista school apparatus between 1930 and 1940? The comparative logical structures the most of the chronicles, and through them, are revealed his most scathing criticism to the reform, the reformers, and the educational consequences of those actions. He also revealed the patterns that he intended to preserve. Taken together, the chronicles of Ataliba de Oliveira made up the interpretation that “the failure of new school reform” occurred because its apologists did not consider the data and situations of the Paulista school reality, nor the conditions faced by teachers and students in the educational task.

Desde una perspectiva de análisis guiada por Darnton (1986), este artículo tuv como objetivo capturar las interpretaciones de Ataliba Antonio de Oliveira sobre el movimiento de la escuela nueva. Se trata de un maestro paulista que siguió y resistió de cerca y desde dentro las embestidas e intentos de renovación pedagógica en curso en el sistema escolar paulista. Al escribir más de doscientas crónicas, interpretando entre otros temas las iniciativas de los escolanovistas en São Paulo, Ataliba de Oliveira señaló los errores que caracterizaron “el fracaso de la reforma escolanovista”. Después de inventariar y analizar esas crónicas, este artículo buscó responder al siguiente problema: ¿Cómo interpretó Ataliba de Oliveira el movimiento de la escuela nueva y los intentos de insertar esta doctrina pedagógica en el sistema escolar paulista, entre las décadas de 1930 y 1940? La lógica comparada estructura la mayor parte de las crónicas y, a través de ella, se revelan los puntos sobre los que se desvelan las críticas más contundentes del autor a la reforma, a los reformadores y a las consecuencias educativas de estas acciones, así como el patrón de obra que quiso preservar. En conjunto, los textos de Ataliba de Oliveira construyeron la interpretación de que “el fracaso de la reforma escolanovista” ocurrió porque sus apologistas no supieron leer el ejemplo del pasado.

Trata-se de um professor paulista que acompanhou e resistiu de perto e por dentro as investidas e tentativas da renovação pedagógica em curso do aparelho escolar paulista. Ao escrever mais de duas centenas de crônicas, interpretando entre outros temas as iniciativas dos escolanovistas em São Paulo, nbsp;Ataliba de Oliveira apontou os erros que caracterizaram “o fracasso da reforma escolanovista”. Após inventariar e analisar essas crônicas, este artigo buscou responder a seguinte problemática: Como Ataliba de Oliveira interpretou o movimento da escola nova e as tentativas de inserção dessa doutrina pedagógica no aparelho escolar paulista, entre as décadas de 1930 e 1940? Resumo Este estudo teve como objetivo analisar o papel de fatores temporais, geográficos e sociodemográficos na mortalidade por câncer de próstata, mama, colo do útero, cólon, pulmão e esôfago nas capitais brasileiras (2000-2015). Estudo ecológico utilizando informações brasileiras de mortalidade. Modelos de Poisson multinível foram usados para estimar o risco ajustado de mortalidade por câncer. Os níveis de mortalidade foram maiores em homens para câncer de cólon, pulmão e esôfago. As taxas de mortalidade foram mais altas nos idosos. Nossos resultados mostraram risco aumentado de mortalidade por câncer de cólon em ambos os sexos de 2000 a 2015, o que também foi evidenciado para câncer de mama e de pulmão em mulheres. Em ambos os sexos, o maior risco de mortalidade para câncer de pulmão e esôfago foi observado nas capitais do Sul. As capitais do Centro-Oeste, Sul e Sudeste apresentaram o maior risco de mortalidade por câncer de cólon tanto para homens quanto para mulheres. A taxa de mortalidade por câncer de cólon aumentou para ambos os sexos, enquanto a mortalidade por câncer de mama e de pulmão aumentou apenas para as mulheres. A região Norte apresentou a menor taxa de mortalidade por câncer de mama, colo do útero, cólon e esôfago. As regiões Centro-Oeste e Nordeste apresentaram as maiores taxas de mortalidade por câncer de próstata.

Abstract This study aimed to analyze the role of period, geographic and socio demographic factors in cancer-related mortality by prostate, breast, cervix, colon, lung and esophagus cancer in Brazilians capitals (2000-2015). Ecological study using data of Brazilian Mortality Information. Multilevel Poisson models were used to estimate the adjusted risk of cancer mortality. Mortality rate levels were higher in males for colon, lung and esophageal cancers. Mortality rates were highest in the older. Our results showed an increased risk of colon cancer mortality in both sexes from 2000 to 2015, which was also evidenced for breast and lung cancers in women. In both genders, the highest mortality risk for lung and esophageal cancers was observed in Southern capitals. Midwestern, Southern and Southeastern capitals showed the highest mortality risk for colon cancer both for males and females. Colon cancer mortality rate increased for both genders, while breast and lung cancers mortality increased only for women. The North region showed the lowest mortality rate for breast, cervical, colon and esophageal cancers. The Midwest and Northeast regions showed the highest mortality rates for prostate cancer.

RESUMO Esse artigo tem como tema geral a circulação transnacional do conhecimento pedagógico e toma como como fonte documental obras norte-americanas que integram o acervo Paulo Bourroul, originário da biblioteca da Escola Normal da Capital/Escola Normal Caetano de Campos, doado à Faculdade de Educação/USP em 1976. Numa perspectiva exploratória, a análise dessa arena intelectual, social e cultural na qual o conhecimento se move, incidiu sobre obras em circulação na última década do regime monárquico. O inventário das obras permitiu identificar tendências predominantes: no âmbito das práticas, os processos de ensino intuitivo adquiriram legitimidade por meio de diferentes rotas de circulação; no âmbito científico, a pedagogia amparava-se em princípios formuladas pela Psicologia para descrever o funcionamento do intelecto na produção de ideias e convicções e elevava as finalidades do campo pedagógico para além da instrução dos conteúdos.

ABSTRACT This article has as a general theme the transnational circulation of pedagogical knowledge. It takes as a documental source American books that integrate the Paulo Bourroul collection, originated from the library of Normal School/Caetano de Campos Normal School, donated to Faculty of Education/USP, in 1976. In an exploratory perspective, the analysis of this intellectual, social and cultural arena where knowledge moves, focuses on works in circulation in the last decade of the Monarchy government. The inventory of books allowed identify majority tendencies: in the practical scope, the process of the objective method got legitimacy through different routes of circulation; in the scientific scope, Pedagogy has supported in principles formulated by Psychology in order to describe the operation of intellect in the production of ideas and convictions and elevated the goals of the pedagogical field beyond the instruction of subjects.

Resumo Este artigo adota a perspectiva histórica com o objetivo de compreender a dinâmica da circulação das ideias pedagógicas e identificar movimentos de inovação, acomodação e reinterpretação, próprios dos processos culturais. A análise do tema está delimitada às ideias educacionais de Johann Friedrich Herbart (1776-1841) postas em circulação nos Estados Unidos da América, entre a década final do século XIX e as décadas iniciais do século XX. As fontes documentais que amparam a análise desse tema são dois manuais didáticos produzidos para orientar a prática de ensino de professores da escola elementar, em formação e em exercício: The elements of general method based on the principles of Herbart (nas edições de 1893 e 1907) e Teaching by projects, publicado em 1920, ambos de autoria de Charles A. McMurry (1857-1929), um dos principais divulgadores norte-americanos do herbartianismo. O autor, além de produzir vasta bibliografia, foi professor, diretor e superintendente de escolas primárias, atuou em instituições de formação de professores e foi um dos fundadores e Secretário da National Herbart Society. A análise do ciclo de difusão das ideias herbartianas, situado entre as concepções pestalozianas – as lições de coisas – e as concepções da Educação Progressiva – o método de projetos -, considerou a inter-relação entre agentes, instituições formadoras e impressos pedagógicos e acompanhou desde suas pretensões renovadoras até sua capitulação frente a outras tendências e teorias. Foram identificados movimentos de inovação, adaptação e reinterpretação dos conceitos e das práticas pedagógicas destinados a conferir-lhes relevância e sentido em diferentes contextos de uso.

Abstract This article adopts the historical perspective to understand the dynamics of the circulation of pedagogical ideas and identify movements of innovation, accommodation, and reinterpretation, usual in cultural processes. The analysis of the theme is limited to the educational ideas of Johan Friedrich Herbart (1776-1841) put into circulation in the United States of America, between the final decade of the 19th century and the initial decades of the 20th century. The documentary sources that support the analysis of this theme are two textbooks produced to guide the teaching practice of elementary school teachers, in training and practice: The elements of the general method based on the principles of Herbart (in the 1893 and 1907 editions) and Teaching by Projects, published in 1920, both by Charles A. McMurry (1857-1929), one of the leading North American disseminators of Herbartianism who, in addition to producing a vast bibliography, was a teacher, director and superintendent in primary schools, served in teacher training institutions and was one of the founders and Secretary of the National Herbart Society. The analysis of the diffusion cycle of Herbartian ideas, located between the Pestalozzian conceptions - the object lessons - and the conceptions of Progressive Education - the project method -, considered the interrelationship between agents, educational institutions, and pedagogical publications and followed since its renewing pretensions until its capitulation in the face of other trends and theories. Movements of innovation, adaptation, and reinterpretation of pedagogical concepts and practices were identified to give them relevance and meaning in different contexts of use.

ABSTRACT: Objective: This study aimed to identify the prevalence of multimorbidity and its associated factors in women in southern Brazil. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional, population-based study with a sample of 1,128 women (age 20–69 years), living in São Leopoldo, southern Brazil. Multimorbidity was defined as two or more chronic conditions measured using the therapeutic and chemical anatomical classification of continuous use medications prescribed by a physician. Poisson regression model with robust variance was used to assess the association between sociodemographic and lifestyle variables and multimorbidity. Results: The prevalence of multimorbidity was 21.7% (95%CI 19.3–24.2), and 26 chronic conditions were identified. A direct linear association was observed with age and income and an inverse association with education. Being unemployed was a risk factor for multimorbidity (PR 1.95; 95%CI 1.51–2.52). Alcohol consumption (moderate or excessive) had a protective effect. Overweight and obese women were 53% (PR 1.53; 95%CI 1.09–2.15) and 76% (PR 1.76; 95%CI 1.27–2.45) more likely to have multimorbidity than eutrophic women. Conclusion: Over 20% of the adult women had multimorbidity, and its occurrence was strongly associated with socioeconomic characteristics, such as fewer years of schooling, higher income, and not having an occupation. The results regarding alcohol consumption are still insufficient to propose a public policy for the prevention of multimorbidity. Excess weight was an independent risk factor and should be addressed in public health policies for the prevention and management of multimorbidity.
