Resumo A esporulação de Didymella bryoniae in vitro é de grande importância para estudos que requerem inóculo puro e em grandes quantidades. Assim, os objetivos deste estudo foram identificar a melhor condição para esporulação de D. bryoniae combinando diferentes espectros de luz (luz UV-A ou UV-B, luz branca e escuro contínuo) com distintos meios de cultura (PDA, V8, ML e PDAB) e, avaliar a sobrevivência do fungo armazenado a -20°C ao longo do tempo. As amostras de fungo só esporularam quando submetidas ao tratamento com luz UV-B, independentemente do meio de cultura. Maior aparecimento de esporos do tipo conídio foi observado no meio PDAB, e a menor produção ocorreu no meio ML. Estruturas reprodutivas, como peritécios e picnídeos, foram observadas em todos os meios de cultura. No entanto, houve uma variação considerável na quantidade de cada estrutura entre os diferentes meios de cultura. Os meios ML e V8 apresentaram maior número de peritécios e os meios PDA e PDAB apresentaram maior proporção de picnídeos em relação aos peritécios. A duração do armazenamento a -20°C não afetou o crescimento micelial ou a taxa de crescimento micelial. Em conclusão, a luz UV-B é essencial para a esporulação de D. bryoniae in vitro. Além disso, a composição do meio de cultura influencia o tipo de estrutura fúngica produzida, bem como o tamanho e a quantidade dos esporos. O congelamento a -20°C é uma técnica eficiente que pode ser usada para armazenar D. bryoniae por pelo menos cinco meses sem perda de viabilidade

Abstract The in vitro sporulation of Didymella bryoniae is of great importance for studies that require pure inoculum and in large quantities. Thus, the objectives of this study were to identify the best condition for D. bryoniae sporulation combining different light spectra (UV-A or UV-B light, white light, and continuous dark), with distinct culture media (PDA, V8, ML, and PDAB) and, to evaluate fungus’ survivability stored at -20°C over time. The fungus samples were only able to sporulate when subjected to the UV-B light treatment, regardless of the culture medium. The highest appearance of spores conidium type was observed in the PDAB medium, and the lowest production occurred in the ML medium. Reproductive structures, such as perithecia and pycnidia, were observed in all culture media. However, there was considerable variation in the amount of each structure between the different culture media. The ML and V8 media showed a greater number of perithecia and the PDA and PDAB media presented a greater proportion of pycnidia compared to perithecia. The storage duration at -20°C did not affect mycelial growth or mycelial growth rate. In conclusion, the UV-B light is essential for D. bryoniae in vitro sporulation. Moreover, the culture medium composition influences the type of fungal structure produced, as well as spores’ size and quantity. Freezing at -20°C is an efficient technique that can be used to store D. bryoniae for at least five months without loss of viability.

ABSTRACT Drug repositioning seeks to discover new applications for a drug that has already been approved in the market, resulting in faster and lower cost solutions, generally used for diseases that receive little investment, such as cutaneous leishmaniasis. In this context, hesperidin, commercially approved as Daflon®, is a flavonoid that belongs to the chalcones group, a class that has antileishmanial potential. The present study evaluated the in vitro and in vivo antileishmanial activity of commercial hesperidin. Hesperidin (9 to 0.56 mg mL-1) was tested against promastigote and amastigote forms of four dermotropic species of Leishmania, namely L. (L.) amazonensis, L. (V.) guyanensis, L. (V.) braziliensis and L. (V.) naiffi. For the in vivo tests, hamsters were infected in the snout and the lesions were treated with intralesional hesperidin. The treatment effectiveness was assessed by measuring the total volume of the lesion on the snout and determining the parasitic load. The in vitro results showed moderate toxicity in murine macrophages, with higher efficacy in L. (L.) amazonensis when compared to the other species tested. The in vivo results showed that hesperidin was able to gradually reduce the size of lesions by L. (L.) amazonensis, although it did not induce clinical and parasitological cure. Thus, hesperidin showed potential in in vitro tests against L. (L.) amazonensis and further studies with new formulations and experimental treatment schemes should be carried out.

RESUMO O reposicionamento de medicamentos busca descobrir novas aplicações para um medicamento já aprovado no mercado, resultando em soluções mais rápidas e de menor custo, geralmente utilizadas para doenças que recebem pouco investimento, como a leishmaniose tegumentar. Nesse contexto, a hesperidina, aprovada comercialmente como Daflon®, tem despertado interesse científico por ser um flavonoide pertencente ao grupo das chalconas, classe que possui potencial antileishmania. O presente estudo avaliou a atividade antileishmania in vitro e in vivo da hesperidina comercial. A hesperidina (9 a 0,56 mg mL-1) foi testada contra as formas promastigota e amastigota de quatro espécies dermotrópicas de Leishmania, sendo elas L. (L.) amazonensis, L. (V.) guyanensis, L. (V.) braziliensis e L. (V.) naiffi. Para os testes, os hamsters foram infectados no focinho e as lesões tratadas com hesperidina intralesional, cuja eficácia foi avaliada através da aferição do volume total da lesão no focinho e a determinação da carga parasitária. Os resultados in vitro demonstraram toxicidade moderada em macrófagos murinos e melhor eficácia em Leishmania (L.) amazonensis quando comparados às demais espécies testadas. Os resultados in vivo mostraram que a hesperidina foi capaz de reduzir gradativamente o tamanho das lesões causadas por L. (L.) amazonensis, embora não tenha induzido a cura clínica e parasitológica. Assim, a hesperidina mostrou-se promissora em estudos in vitro contra Leishmania (L.) amazonensis e novos estudos com novas formulações e esquemas de tratamento experimental devem ser realizados.

Abstract Introduction: In Mexico, cardiac rehabilitation (CR) as an interdisciplinary intervention with therapeutic impact in patients with heart disease is growing. There is the need to know actual conditions of CR in our country. Objectives: The objective of this National Registry is to follow-up those existing and new CR units in Mexico through the comparison between the two previous registries, RENAPREC-2009 and RENAPREC II-2015 studies. This is a descriptive study focused on diverse CR activities such as assistance training, and certification of health professionals, barriers, reference, population attended, interdisciplinarity, permanence over time, growth prospects, regulations, post-pandemic condition, integrative characteristics, and scientific research. Results: Data were collected from 45 CR centers in the 32 states, 75.5% are private practice units, 67% are new, 33% were part of RENAPREC II-2015, and 17 have continued since 2009. With a better distribution of CR units along the territory, the median reference of candidates for CR programs is 9% with a significant reduction into tiempo of enrollment to Phase II admission (19 ± 11 days). Regarding to previous registries, the coverance of Phases I, II, and III is 71%, 100%, and 93%, respectively; and a coverance increases in evaluation, risk stratification, and prescription, more comprehensive attendance and prevention strategies. Conclusions: CR in Mexico has grown in the past 7 years. Even there is still low reference and heterogeneity in specific processes, there are strengths such as interdisciplinarity, scientific professionalization of specialists, national diversification, and an official society that are consolidated over time.

Resumen: La infección por virus respiratorio sincicial (VRS) es causa frecuente de morbimortalidad en niños. Recientemente se han logrado grandes avances en el desarrollo de nuevos anticuerpos monoclonales y vacunas gracias al reconocimiento de la conformación estructural de proteínas del virus. El objetivo de este estudio es revisar los avances relacionados con la prevención de VRS en los primeros 6 meses de vida. Avances en biología estructural han demostrado que la proteína de fusión del VRS (Proteína F) en su conformación prefusión (Pre-F) constituye un excelente antígeno para desarrollar anticuerpos monoclonales y vacunas para prevenir infecciones por virus respiratorio sincicial (VRS). Un nuevo anticuerpo monoclonal de dosis única, nirsevimab, tiene mayor poder neutralizante que palivizumab actualmente disponible, y una protección prolongada por 5-6 meses. Nirsevimab tiene eficacia demostrada de 76,8 % (IC 95%: 49,4-89,4) para prevenir infección respiratoria baja a 150 días después de la inyección, disminuyendo el riesgo de hospitalizarse en UCI en un 90,1% (IC 95%: 16,498,8). Clesrovimab es otro anticuerpo monoclonal, de dosis única, que también ha presentado promisorios resultados en los ensayos fase 1b-2a. Mas recientemente se ha desarrollado, replicando con ingeniería genética, la proteína F estabilizada en su estado Pre-F como antígeno, una vacuna bivalente contra VRS A y B (Bivalent Prefusion F) la que, administrada a embarazadas, entre las 24-36 semanas de gestación, induce altos niveles de anticuerpos maternos con elevado traspaso transplacentario al feto. Esta vacuna ha demostrado una eficacia de 81,8% (IC 95%: 40,6-96,3) a 90 días y de 69,4% (IC 95%: 44,3-84,1) a 180 días para prevenir enfermedad grave por VRS sin eventos de seguridad detectados hasta el momento. Estos desarrollos confieren protección efectiva mediante inmunidad pasiva contra VRS que dura los primeros 5-6 meses de vida, y tanto en el caso de nirsevimab como la vacuna PreF para embarazadas ya ha sido aprobado para su uso en Europa por EMA, Canadá y en Estados Unidos por la FDA.

Abstract: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection is a frequent cause of morbidity and mortality in children. Recently, great advances have been made in the development of new monoclonal antibodies and vaccines thanks to the recognition of the structural conformation of virus proteins. The objective of this study was to review the advances related to the prevention of RSV infection in the first 6 months of life. Advances in structural biology have shown that the RSV fusion protein (F-Protein) in its prefusion state (Pre-F) is an excellent antigen for developing monoclonal antibodies and vaccines to prevent respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infections. A new single-dose monoclonal antibody, Nirsevimab, has greater neutralizing power than currently available Palivizumab, and prolonged protection for 5 to 6 months. Nirsevimab has demonstrated an efficacy of 76.8% (95% CI, 49.4 to 89.4) in preventing lower respiratory infection 150 days after vaccination, decreasing the risk of ICU admission by 90.1% (95% CI: 16.4-98.8). Clesrovimab is another single-dose monoclonal antibody that has also shown promising results in phase 1b-2a trials. More recently, a bivalent vaccine against RSV A and B (Bivalent Prefusion F) has also been developed by replicating the F-protein stabilized in its Pre-F state as an antigen, using genetic engineering. This antigen, when administered to pregnant women between 24-36 weeks of gestation, induces high levels of antibodies in the mother with high transplacental transfer to the fetus. This vaccine has demonstrated an efficacy of 81.8% (95% CI: 40.6-96.3) at 90 days and 69.4% (95% CI: 44.3-84.1) at 180 days to prevent severe RSV disease (primary endpoint) without safety events detected so far. Nirsevimab and the Pre-F vaccine for pregnant women confer effective protection through passive immunity against RSV that lasts for the first 5 to 6 months of life and have already been approved for use in Europe by the EMA and in Canada and the United States by the FDA.

Abstract 27. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of two doses of equine chorionic gonadotropin (eCG) in a J-Synch protocol, using 107 cows with calves at foot, Holstein, Brown Swiss, and their crosses, with a body condition (CC) of 2.5 (scale 1-5), and a silvopastoral system. The trial consisted of two treatments (T): T1 = 1 dose of eCG (n=52) and T2 = 2 doses of eCG (n=55). On day 0, an intravaginal device (BID) containing 0.5 g progesterone (P4) and 2 mg estradiol benzoate (BE) was administered. On day 6, the DIB was removed and 500 μg Cloprostenol (PGF2α) + 400 IU of eCG was administered. The base of the tail was painted, to determine estrus manifestation. Unpainted animals were inseminated at 60 h and painted animals at 72 h, + 100 µg of (GnRH). At T1 treatment, the size of the corpus luteum (CL) was measured on days 14 and 30 after insemination, and blood samples were taken. At T2 treatment, a second dose of 400 IU of eCG was administered on day 14, and CL size was measured, as well as on day 30, and blood samples were taken. The pregnancy diagnosis was made 40 days after the IATF, by ultrasonography. The highest pregnancy rate was observed in T2 (58.2%), and in cows in estrus (56.6%). No statistical differences were observed between treatments (p=0.7). Serum P4 concentrations were not different. Similarly, the diameter of the CL at days 14 and 30 post IATF did not differ (p>0.05). However, the size of the CL at days 14 and 30, is clearly related (p<0.001). In conclusion, a second dose of eCG on day 14 in the J - Synch protocol had no effect on pregnancy but a tendency to improve performance in Ecuadorian Amazonian cows.

Resumen 23. El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar el efecto de dos dosis de gonadotropina coriónica equina (eCG) en el protocolo J-Synch, utilizando 107 vacas con cría al pie, de razas Holstein, Pardo Suizo y sus cruzas, con una condición corporal (CC) de 2,5 (escala 1-5), y un sistema silvo-pastoril. El estudio consistió de dos tratamientos (T): T1 = 1 dosis de eCG (n=52), y T2 = 2 dosis de eCG (n=55). El Día 0 se aplicó un dispositivo intravaginal (DIB) con 0,5 g de progesterona (P4) y 2 mg de benzoato de estradiol (BE). Al día 6, se retiró el DIB y se administraron 500 μg de Cloprostenol (PGF2α) + 400 UI de eCG. Se pintó la base de la cola, para determinar manifestación de estro, inseminando animales despintados a las 60 horas y pintados a las 72 horas, + 100 µg de (GnRH). En el T1 se midió el tamaño de cuerpo lúteo (CL) en los días 14 y 30 después de la inseminación y se tomaron muestras de sangre. En el T2, se administró una segunda dosis de 400 UI de (eCG) al día 14, y se midió el tamaño de CL, al igual en día 30, y se tomaron muestras de sangre. El diagnóstico de gestación se realizó a los 40 días después de la IATF, mediante ultrasonografía. La mayor tasa de preñez fue en el T2 (58,2%), y en vacas en estro (56,6%), sin evidenciar diferencias relevantes (p=0,7). Las concentraciones séricas de P4, no difieren. Asimismo, el diámetro del CL de los días 14 y 30 post IATF (p>0,05). Sin embargo, la magnitud del CL en los días 14 y 30, están claramente relacionados (p<0,001). En conclusión, una segunda dosis de eCG al día 14 en el protocolo J-Synch, no tuvo influencia sobre la preñez, pero si una tendencia a desempeñarse mejor en vacas de la Amazonía Ecuatoriana.

Resumen Los minerales son necesarios en la dieta de los animales para su mantenimiento, desarrollo y reproducción. El objetivo fue determinar el contenido de minerales en arbustos que consumen las cabras en una zona árida en tres sistemas de producción, durante las estaciones húmeda y seca. Las hojas, vainas tallos o flores y un suplemento se muestrearon y se determinó en 34 arbustos Ca, Mg, K, Na, P, N, Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, B y Cl. Los arbustos en los sistemas de producción mostraron suficiente K, Ca, K, Mg, Na, B, Cl y N para las necesidades de las cabras; sin embargo, el contenido de P fue bajo. El contenido de Zn, Cu, Fe y Mn fue menor en todos los arbustos. Los resultados sugieren que, en la zona de estudio es posible utilizar forrajes no leguminosos en la dieta para mejorar su valor nutricional, debido a su contenido mayor en minerales. El sistema de producción semi-intensivo mostró que, el 58% de los minerales fue mayor en este sistema, considerado como el mejor. El contenido mineral en L. brevipes, T. lobaeformis y A. barclayana en el semi-intensivo fueron adecuados para las cabras, mientras que en el extensivo el contenido mineral fue de buena calidad nutricional con S. thurberi y C. gayana para el sistema intensivo. Los arbustos mostraron diferencias entre los macrominerales y la cantidad/calidad nutricional de estos para las cabras difiere en función del sistema de producción, la estación y los tipos de arbustos.

Abstract Minerals are needed in the diet of animals for maintenance, development, and reproduction. The aim was to determine mineral content of shrubs consumed by goats in an arid area from three production systems, during wet and dry seasons. The leaves, pods, stems, or flowers of 34 shrubs and one supplement were sampled manually and analyzed Ca, Mg, K, Na, P, N, Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, B, and Cl. The shrubs showed enough K Ca, K, Mg, Na, B, Cl and N for goat requirements for all production systems; however, P was lower. The Zn, Cu, Fe, and Mn contents were lower in all shrubs. The results suggest that in the study area more non-legumes could be used in the goat diet to enhance nutritional value because of their higher mineral content. Considering the status of mineral content, 58% of all minerals had higher content in the semi-intensive production system, and possibly, it is the best production system. Adequate values of mineral content were found in L. brevipes, T. lobaeformis and A. barclayana in the semi-intensive system, while in the extensive system the mineral content was of good nutritional quality with S. thurberi and C. gayana for the intensive system. The 35 shrubs showed differences among macrominerals and the nutritional quantity/quality of these minerals for goats varied depending on production system, season, and types of shrubs.

Resumen Objetivo: Describir medidas de presión arterial sistólica (PAS), diastólica (PAD) y media (PAM) en recién nacidos sanos de término y pretérmino tardío para establecer parámetros de normalidad. Método: Estudio transversal realizado en el cunero fisiológico del Hospital Español, Ciudad de México. Se incluyeron 551 pacientes recién nacidos sanos. Las tomas de PA fueron realizadas dentro de las primeras 48 horas de vida con método oscilométrico. Posterior a la evaluación de normalidad, se realizó un análisis descriptivo de la población y cálculo de percentiles (25, 50 y 75) específicos para cada semana de gestación. Todos los análisis fueron realizados en STATA v14.2. Resultados: Los recién nacidos de sexo masculino tuvieron un valor medio de PAS de 64.6 mmHg en la semana 35 de gestación, este valor aumentó a 69.8 mmHg en la semana 40. El valor de la PAD fue de 42.6 mmHg en la semana 35 de gestación, disminuyendo a 40.8 mmHg para la semana 40. Los valores medios de PAS en los recién nacidos de sexo femenino fueron de 65.5 mmHg en la semana 35, teniendo un incremento a 73.5 mmHg en la semana 40. El valor de la PAD en la semana 35 de gestación fue 38 mmHg, incrementando a 41.3 mmHg en la semana 40. Conclusiones: Los valores de PA en recién nacidos sanos se modifican con la edad gestacional y el sexo. Estos resultados pueden servir como referencia para otros médicos ubicados en países o ciudades con alturas similares a la Ciudad de México.

Abstract Objective: Describe the measurements of systolic, diastolic and mean blood pressure in healthy term and late preterm newborns to establish normal values. Methods: Cross-sectional study carried out in the nursery of the Hospital Español, located in Mexico City. A sample of 551 healthy newborns were included in the study. Blood pressure (BP) measurements were taken within the first 48 hours of life with the oscillometric method. After the evaluation of normality, a descriptive analysis of the population and calculation of percentiles (25, 50 and 75) specific for each week of gestation was performed. All analyzes were performed in STATA v14.2. Results: Male newborns had a mean SBP value of 64.6 mmHg at week 35 of gestation, this value increased to 69.8 mmHg at week 40; the systolic blood pressure (SBP) value was 42.6 mmHg at week 35 of gestation, which decreased to 40.8 mmHg at week 40. The mean SBP values in female newborns were 65.5 mmHg at week 35, increasing to 73.5 mmHg at week 40; the diastolic blood pressure (DBP) value at week 35 of gestation was 38 mmHg, increasing to 41.3 mmHg at week 40. Conclusions: The BP values in healthy newborns are modified by the gestational age and sex of the patients. These results can serve as a reference for other physicians located in countries or cities with a similar altitude than the one in Mexico City.

Resumen Se realizó una revisión sistemática de la literatura en las bases de datos ScienceDirect, PubMed y SciELO. Como criterios de inclusión se tomaron en cuenta artículos originales, de texto completo que incluyeran el uso de nanopartículas (0-100 nm) con fines de regeneración periodontal publicados de 2016 a mayo del 2022. Los términos de búsqueda fueron “Periodontal regeneration AND nanoparticles AND dental materials”. Se obtuvieron y analizaron 13 artículos que cumplieron los criterios de inclusión y exclusión. Se encontró que la nanohidroxiapatita tiene alto efecto regenerador, seguido de nanopartículas de dióxido de titanio, oro, fosfato de calcio, quitosano y óxido de hierro, entre otras. Estas nanopartículas mostraron efecto de regeneración periodontal de una a cuatro semanas promoviendo principalmente las propiedades de osteoinducción, citocompatibilidad, adherencia celular, degradabilidad, analgesia y biomineralización. La nanotecnología en el campo odontológico está emergiendo como una plataforma atractiva para la terapia avanzada en conjunto con los biomateriales dentales. En esta revisión se encontró que las nHA y TiO2NPs mostraron la mejor respuesta celular en el menor tiempo para obtener resultados regenerativos en periodoncia en comparación con otros tipos de NPs utilizadas. Aún hay muy pocas NPs analizadas con fines de regeneración periodontal, por lo que su estudio es un área emergente; sin olvidarnos de las posibles limitantes, consecuencias y efectos adversos a corto y largo plazo, los cuales deben ser estudiados con mayor profundidad.

Abstract To carry out a systematic review of the literature to identify the types of nanoparticles and the effect they have on periodontal regeneration, a systematic review of the literature was carried out in the ScienceDirect, PubMed and SciELO databases. As inclusion criteria, the full-text original articles that included the use of nanoparticles (0-100 nm) for periodontal regeneration purposes published between 2016 and 2022 were taken into account. The search terms were “Periodontal regeneration AND nanoparticles AND dental materials”. 13 articles that met the inclusion and exclusion criteria were obtained and analyzed. nHA was found to have a high regenerative effect, followed by TiO2NPs, gold, calcium phosphate, chitosan, and iron oxide, among others. These NPs showed a periodontal regeneration effect for one to four weeks, mainly promoting osteoinduction, cytocompatibility, cell adherence, degradability, analgesia and biomineralization properties. Nanotechnology in the dental field is emerging as an attractive platform for advanced therapy in conjunction with dental biomaterials. In this review, it was found that nHA and TiO2NPs showed the best cellular response and in the shortest time to obtain regenerative results in periodontics in comparison to other NPs. There are still very few NPs analyzed for periodontal regeneration purposes, so their study is an emerging area. It is essential to recognize the possible limitations, consequences and adverse effects in short and long term, which must be studied in greater depth.

Resumen Antecedentes. Una de las complicaciones más serias de la colecistectomía es la disrupción de la vía biliar, la cual puede estar asociada con lesión vascular concomitante hasta en un 3.4%. Su incidencia, características demográficas y tratamiento son infrarreportados en todo el mundo. Objetivo. Conocer la incidencia de las lesiones vasculares en pacientes con diagnóstico de disrupción de la vía biliar secundaria a colecistectomía, del 1 de enero de 2015 al 31 de diciembre de 2019, confirmado por angiotomografía preoperatoria o por hallazgos transoperatorios. Método. Estudio retrospectivo, observacional y analítico de una serie de casos del 2015 al 2019. Encontrando 144 casos de disrupción de la vía biliar, 15 (10%) con lesión vascular concomitante. Resultados. La lesión vascular más frecuente fue la de arteria hepática derecha, en 13 pacientes (87%). El nivel de disrupción biliar más habitualmente asociado fue Strasberg E3 y E4, en 5 pacientes (36%) cada uno. El tratamiento de la lesión vascular fue ligadura del vaso en 11 pacientes (73%). El tratamiento de la disrupción de vía biliar fue anastomosis hepático-yeyunal en 14 pacientes (93%). Conclusiones. La presencia de lesión de la arteria hepática derecha es la más frecuente y su ligadura no tiene una repercusión significativa en la reconstrucción biliodigestiva, siempre y cuando se realice una técnica adecuada (Hepp-Couinaud).

Abstract Background. One of the most serious complications of cholecystectomy is bile duct disruption, which can be associated with concomitant vascular injury in up to 3.4%. The incidence, demographic characteristics and treatment are underreported worldwide. Objective. To determine the incidence of vascular lesions in patients with a diagnosis of bile duct disruption secondary to cholecystectomy from January 1, 2015 to December 31, 2019, confirmed by preoperative CT angiography or intraoperative findings. Method. Retrospective, observational and analytical study of a series of cases between 2015 and 2019. Where a total of 144 cases of bile duct disruption were found, 15 cases (10%) with concomitant vascular injury. Results. The most frequent vascular injury was of the right hepatic artery in 13 patients (87%). The level of biliary disruption most frequently associated was Strasberg E3 and E4 in 5 patients (36%), respectively. The treatment of vascular injury was ligation of the injured vessel in 11 patients (73%). The treatment established for the repair of biliary disruption was the hepatic jejunum anastomosis in 14 patients (93%). Conclusions. The presence of injury at the level of the right hepatic artery is the most frequent and its ligation did not show a significant impact on biliodigestive reconstruction, as long as an adequate technique is performed (Hepp-Couinaud).

Abstract Mango is susceptible to chilling injury (CI). Its short-term exposure to heat treatments can induce tolerance to this disorder; however, a short time is not enough to control the fruit fly. In this sense, the application of sequential heat treatments where the quarantine treatment is included can bring great benefits for mango marketing. The aim of this research was to evaluate the effect of two different sequentially-applied hot water treatments (HWT) on CI tolerance and changes in oxidative metabolism in mango. Mangoes were divided into four groups: control, HWT1 (dipping in water at 46.1 °C for 75 min), HWT2 (dipping in water at 55 °C for 5 min), and HWT1 + HWT2. Fruits were stored at 5 °C/30 days to induce CI and thereafter at 21 °C for 8 days. Three replicates with five repetitions were used to evaluate CI index, electrolyte leakage (EL), malondialdehyde (MDA), weight loss (WL), color, firmness and enzymatic antioxidant activity. The use of HWT1 reduced CI during low temperature storage, while HWT2 and the HWT1 + HWT2 showed lower CI symptoms during ripening. The use of HWT1 showed a similar EL % and higher MDA content (7.07 x 104 nmol·L-1) than the control (6.68 x 104 nmol·L-1). HWT1 + HWT2 showed the lowest WL (2.98 %) and the highest enzymatic antioxidant activity during cold storage and during the first days at 21 °C, while HWT2 showed the highest color and firmness retention. HWT applied sequentially can be considered an effective alternative to induce CI tolerance and to maintain the quality of mango.

Resumen El mango es susceptible a daño por frío (DF), aunque su exposición a tratamientos térmicos de corto plazo puede inducir tolerancia a esta alteración; sin embargo, un periodo corto no es suficiente para controlar la mosca de la fruta. En este sentido, la aplicación de tratamientos térmicos secuenciales cuando se emplea el tratamiento cuarentenario puede implicar grandes beneficios para la comercialización del mango. El objetivo de esta investigación fue evaluar el efecto de dos tratamientos hidrotérmicos (THT) aplicados secuencialmente sobre la tolerancia al DF y los cambios en el metabolismo oxidativo del mango. Los frutos se dividieron en cuatro grupos: testigo, THT1 (inmersión en agua a 46.1 °C durante 75 min), THT2 (inmersión en agua a 55 °C durante 5 min) y THT1 + THT2. Los frutos se almacenaron a 5 °C por 30 días para inducir el DF, y después a 21 °C durante 8 días. Se utilizaron tres muestras con cinco repeticiones para evaluar el índice de DF, la pérdida de electrolitos (PE), el malondialdehído (MDA), la pérdida de peso (PP), el color, la firmeza y la actividad enzimática antioxidante. El THT1 redujo el DF durante el almacenamiento a temperatura baja, mientras que el THT2 y el THT1 + THT2 presentaron menores síntomas de DF durante la maduración. El uso de THT1 mostró un porcentaje similar de PE y mayor contenido de MDA (7.07 x 104 nmol·L-1) que el testigo (6.68 x 104 nmol·L-1). La combinación THT1 + THT2 presentó la menor PP (2.98 %) y la mayor actividad enzimática antioxidante durante el almacenamiento frío durante los primeros días a 21 °C; en tanto que el THT2 mostró la retención más alta de color y firmeza. Los THT aplicados de manera secuencial se pueden considerar una alternativa efectiva para inducir la tolerancia al DF y para mantener la calidad del mango.

ABSTRACT Leishmaniasis is a parasite disease transmitted by the bites of sandflies. There have been found more than 70 animal species that are natural reservoir hosts of Leishmania. Among the reservoirs, dogs are the most important ones due to their proximity to the human habitat. In this work, we formulate a model to assess the impact of vaccination, insecticide-impregnated collars, and treatment on the control of canine leishmaniasis. To this end, we calculated the Basic Reproduction Number of the disease and carried out a sensitivity analysis of this parameter concerning the epidemiological and demographic parameters. The numerical simulations show the correlation between the disease prevalence and the strategies effectiveness. Control of infection on dogs can be obtained by protecting around 35 percent of dogs with vaccination and insecticide-impregnated collar.

Abstract: The main objectives of this study are to determine the emission of greenhouse gases based on the amount of nitrogen applied to soil from bovine manure and to generate their emission factors. The treatments consist of applying one or two kilograms of manure and one or two liters of urine, resulting in the application of 56.11, 112.23, 104.90, and 209.80 g N/m2, in addition to a control treatment. Gas emissions are determined during the first 39 days by using static cameras. The methane emission factors are 0.25 and 0.53 kg/animal/year after applying one and two kilograms of manure, respectively. In addition, increasing the dose of urine, from one to two liters, decreases the amount of nitrogen that is converted into nitrous oxide from 2.1% to 1.24%. In conclusion, applying bovine feces instead of urine (proportional to the N dose applied) increases the production of CO2eq, resulting in greater environmental contamination.

Resumen: Este estudio tiene por objetivos determinar la emisión de gases de efecto invernadero en función de la cantidad de nitrógeno aplicado al suelo desde las excretas bovinas y generar los respectivos factores de emisión. Los tratamientos consistieron en la aplicación de 1 y 2 kg de heces frescas y, 1 y 2 L de orina, resultando en la aplicación de 56.11, 112.23, 104.90, y 209.80 g N/m2, además de un tratamiento control. Los factores de emisión de metano con la aplicación de 1 y 2 kg de heces fueron 0.25 y 0.53 kg/animal/año, respectivamente. Los resultados muestran que la aplicación de una dosis creciente de orina (de 1 a 2 L) disminuyó la cantidad de nitrógeno que es convertido en óxido nitroso, pasando de 2.1 a 1.24 %. En conclusión, la aplicación de heces, más que la orina, proporcionalmente a la dosis de N aplicada, conlleva a la mayor producción de CO2eq, generando un efecto más contaminante.

ABSTRACT Objective: This study aims to investigate the ability of the six-minute walk distance (6MWD) as a prognostic marker for midterm clinical outcomes three months after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), to identify possible predictors of fall in 6MWD in the early postoperative period, and to establish the percentage fall in early postoperative 6MWD, considering the preoperative baseline as 100%. Methods: A prospective cohort of patients undergoing elective CABG were included. The percentage fall in 6MWD was assessed by the difference between preoperative and postoperative day (POD) five. Clinical outcomes were evaluated three months after hospital discharge. Results: There was a significant decrease in 6MWD on POD5 compared with preoperative baseline values (percentage fall of 32.5±16.5%, P<0.0001). Linear regression analysis showed an independent association of the percentage fall of 6MWD with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) and preoperative inspiratory muscle strength. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis revealed that the best cutoff value of percentage fall in 6MWD to predict poorer clinical outcomes at three months was 34.6% (area under the curve = 0.82, sensitivity = 78.95%, specificity = 76.19%, P=0.0001). Conclusion: This study indicates that a cutoff value of 34.6% in percentage fall of 6MWD on POD5 was able to predict poorer clinical outcomes at three months of follow-up after CABG. Use of CPB and preoperative inspiratory muscle strength were independent predictors of percentage fall of 6MWD in the postoperative period. These findings further support the clinical application of 6MWD and propose an inpatient preventive strategy to guide clinical management over time.
