ABSTRACT Brazil experienced one of the fastest increasing numbers of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases worldwide. The Sao Paulo State (SPS) reported a high incidence, particularly in Sao Paulo municipality. This study aimed to identify clusters of incidence and mortality of hospitalized patients with severe acute respiratory syndrome for COVID-19 in the SPS, in 2020–2021, and describe the origin flow pattern of the cases. Cases and mortality risk area clusters were identified through different analyses (spatial clusters, spatio-temporal clusters, and spatial variation in temporal trends) by weighting areas. Ripley’s K12-function verified the spatial dependence between the cases and infrastructure. There were 517,935 reported cases, with 152,128 cases resulting in death. Of the 470,441 patients hospitalized and residing in the SPS, 357,526 remained in the original municipality, while 112,915 did not. Cases and death clusters were identified in the Sao Paulo metropolitan region (SPMR) and Baixada Santista region in the first study period, and in the SPMR and the Campinas, Sao Jose do Rio Preto, Barretos, and Sorocaba municipalities during the second period. We highlight the priority areas for control and surveillance actions for COVID-19, which could lead to better outcomes in future outbreaks.

Abstract Considering the development of reasoning as a central aspect in the process of learning mathematics, understanding ways to promote it and actions performed by the teacher in this process are important issues for investigations. In order to deepen these discussions, this article aims to understand how teacher’s actions can contribute to mathematical reasoning students’ development who study differential and integral calculus. Assuming a qualitative perspective of interpretative nature, we analyzed a class of this subject, in which it was promoted a discussion about an exploratory task involving a water and salt mixture concentration varying by the time, and, from it was introduced the concept of rational function and its long-run behavior. Six class excerpts are analyzed, based on a framework which classifies teacher’s actions from four categories (inviting; guiding/ supporting; informing/suggesting; and challenging). As results, we recognized a continuous and increasing movement in the teacher’s actions during the conduct of the discussion, highlighting the implications for the mathematical reasoning students’ development and the concept of rational function understanding.

Resumo Considerando o desenvolvimento do raciocínio como aspecto central no processo de aprendizagem matemática, compreender modos de promovê-lo e ações desempenhadas pelo professor neste processo são questões importantes para investigação. No intuito de aprofundar essas discussões, este artigo tem, por objetivo, compreender como as ações do professor podem contribuir para o desenvolvimento do raciocínio matemático de estudantes que cursam cálculo diferencial e integral. Assumindo uma perspectiva qualitativa de cunho interpretativo, analisamos uma aula dessa disciplina, na qual promoveu-se uma discussão a respeito de uma tarefa exploratória envolvendo a concentração de uma mistura de água e sal variando com o tempo, e, a partir dela, introduziu-se o conceito de função racional e seu comportamento a longo prazo. Com base em um quadro teórico que classifica as ações do professor a partir de quatro categorias – a constar: convidar; guiar/ apoiar; informar/sugerir; e desafiar, são analisados seis trechos da aula. Como resultados, reconhecemos um movimento contínuo e crescente nas ações do professor durante a condução da discussão, destacando as implicações para o desenvolvimento do raciocínio matemático dos estudantes e compreensão do conceito de função racional.

Abstract Eleocharis multinerviglumis, a new species of Eleocharis ser. Tenuissimae (Cyperaceae) known only from the Poços de Caldas plateau in southeastern Brazil, is described here. The new species was found growing in an Atlantic Forest remnant as a submerged or emergent herb in a flooded environment. Eleocharis multinerviglumis differs from other Eleocharis ser. Tenuissimae species mainly by having dimorphic spikelets, with the upper glumes of the spikelets on the culm apex with 7 to 10 prominent longitudinal nerves on both sides (rib-like). Taxonomic notes, an occurrence map and illustrations (including SEM images) are provided.

Resumo No intuito de desvelar como se constituem oportunidades de aprendizagem profissional do professor que ensina Matemática, propõe-se neste artigo compreender como interações discursivas entre professores participantes de um processo de formação continuada promovem oportunidades para eles aprenderem sobre o ensino de padrões e regularidades. Os dados desse estudo qualitativo-interpretativo incluem vídeo e áudio gravação dos encontros; arquivos das tarefas; e registros escritos da formação. A organização das tarefas e a dinâmica implementada nas discussões coletivas propiciaram momentos de comunicação dialógica, privilegiando um discurso pedagógico exploratório, atrelado a um discurso matemático exploratório, assim como favoreceram discussões matemáticas e didáticas, com argumentações que articulam os conhecimentos profissionais abordados. Sendo assim, refinar a capacidade de reconhecer formas de discurso e de motivá-las ou responder a elas contribui para o desenvolvimento profissional docente. Abstract In order to comprehend how the professional learning opportunities of the teacher who teaches mathematics are constituted, the article proposed to understand how discursive interactions between teachers participating in a continuous formation process promote opportunities for them to learn about the teaching of patterns and regularities. The data of this qualitative-interpretative study include video and audio recordings of the meetings; archives of the tasks; and formation registers. The organization of tasks and the implemented dynamics in the collective discussions made possible the moments of dialogical communication, privileging the exploratory pedagogical speech, linked to an exploratory mathematical discourse, as well as favored the mathematical and didactic discussions, with arguments that articulate the professional knowledge approached. RESUMO Objetivo: Construir e validar três cenários clínicos para capacitação de cuidadores informais de pessoas dependentes. Métodos: Estudo metodológico, realizado entre janeiro e agosto de 2021, em um município no noroeste do estado do Paraná. Foi desenvolvido em duas etapas: construção dos cenários; e validação do conteúdo por experts (n = 12). Para estimar o grau de concordância entre os juízes, utilizou-se o índice de validade de conteúdo, e considerou-se o valor de 80% como uma taxa aceitável de concordância. Resultados: Os cenários de simulação mostraram-se apropriados, obtendo valor médio de 91,6%. No entanto, foram feitos alguns ajustes em sua organização no que tange à clareza na redação das orientações, conforme sugestão dos juízes. Conclusões: A construção e validação dos cenários clínicos mostraram-se adequadas e relevantes, de modo que eles podem ser utilizados na capacitação de cuidadores informais de pessoas dependentes.

ABSTRACT Objective: To construct and validate three clinical scenarios for training dependent persons’ informal caregivers. Methods: Methodological study, conducted between January and August 2021, in a municipality in the northwest of the state of Paraná. It was developed in two stages: construction of scenarios; and content validation by experts (n = 12). To estimate the degree of agreement between the experts, the content validity index was used, and 80% was considered an acceptable rate of agreement. Results: The simulation scenarios proved appropriate, obtaining an average value of 91.6%. However, some adjustments were made in their organization pertaining clarity in the wording of guidelines, as suggested by the expert validators. Conclusions: The construction and validation of the clinical scenarios proved to be adequate and relevant for use in the training of informal caregivers of dependent persons.

RESUMEN Objetivo: Construir y validar tres escenarios clínicos para capacitación de cuidadores informales de personas dependientes. Métodos: Estudio metodológico, realizado entre enero y agosto de 2021, en un municipio en el noroeste de Paraná. Fue desarrollado en dos etapas: construcción de los escenarios; y validez de contenido por expertos (n = 12). Para estimar el grado de concordancia entre los jueces, se utilizó el índice de validez de contenido, y se consideró el valor de 80% como una tasa aceptable de concordancia. Resultados: Los escenarios de simulación se mostraron apropiados, obteniendo valor mediano de 91,6%. Sin embargo, fueron hechos algunos ajustes en su organización en lo que tange a la claridad en la redacción de las orientaciones, conforme sugestión de los jueces. Conclusiones: La construcción y validación de los escenarios clínicos se mostraron adecuadas y relevantes, de modo que pueden ser utilizados en la capacitación de cuidadores informales de personas dependientes.

Resumo Assumindo a importância do desenvolvimento do raciocínio como competência básica na aprendizagem do Cálculo Diferencial e Integral, objetivamos compreender os processos do raciocínio matemático de estudantes dessa disciplina no trabalho com episódios de resolução de tarefas que envolvem a análise coordenada das mudanças que ocorrem em duas variáveis interdependentes. Adotando uma perspectiva qualitativa de cunho interpretativo, com princípios de uma Investigação Baseada em Design, utilizamos o protocolo escrito e gravações de áudios do trabalho de três grupos de estudantes ao resolverem tarefas envolvendo a criação, interpretação e reflexão a respeito de gráficos. Como resultados, destacamos um processo de construção de conjecturas apoiado em conhecimentos matemáticos que já possuíam, na percepção de relações presentes na tarefa ou, ainda, no senso comum. Além disso, ressaltamos a busca por motivos para validação ou refutação, momento no qual os estudantes resgataram conhecimentos que já possuíam ou construíram novos conhecimentos matemáticos, com a elaboração de novas conjecturas ou aprimoramento de uma já elaborada, novas investigações e tentativas de justificar. Por fim, destacamos o papel desempenhado pela discussão entre os estudantes, bem como o potencial e as limitações das tarefas.

Abstract Acknowledging the importance of reasoning development as a basic competence in learning Differential and Integral Calculus, this work is aimed at understanding the mathematical reasoning processes of students in this discipline, in the process involving the investigation of task resolution that contains the coordinated analysis of changes that happen in two interdependent variables. Adoptin a qualitative perspective of an interpretative nature, with the principles of Design-Based Research, we use the written protocol and audio recordings of the work of three groups of students when solving task involving the creation, interpretation, and reflection about graphics. As a result, we highlight a process construction of conjectures supported by mathematical knowledge that they already had, in the perception of relationships present in the task or, still, in common sense. In addition, we emphasize the search for reasons for validation or refutation, at which time students recovered knowledge they already had or built new mathematical knowledge, with the elaboration of new conjectures or improvement of an already elaborated on, new investigations and attempts to justify. Finally, we highlight the role played by the discussion among students, as well the potential and limitations of the tasks.

Abstract The population structure and growth of two populations (Arraial and Capivari rivers) of Aegla schmitti was evaluated. The following parameters were determined: size, age structure, sex ratio, recruitment period, and sampling method selectivity (traps and handnet). There was variation between males and females. The carapace length size class distribution was unimodal in the Arraial River, and polymodal in the Capivari River. The sampling method influenced the proportion of demographic categories. The recruitment occurred mostly between October and December. The growth curves for the Arraial and Capivari rivers, respectively, were Ct= 26,50[1- e -0,004(t+53,36)] and Ct= 34,79[1- e -0,0024(t+122,34)] for males, and Ct= 23,07[1- e -0.0027(t+23,18)] and Ct= 25.52[1- e -0,0033(t+19,51)] for females. The maximum CL estimated for males and females were 26.50 and 23.07mm for the Arraial River, and 34.79 and 25.52mm for the Capivari River. Longevity was estimated in 2 years for females of both populations, and 2.5 and 3 years for males of the Arraial and Capivari rivers, respectively. The results allow for the characterization of the growth patterns of A. schmitti in two hydrographic basins, providing information for the species’ preservation and also demonstrating the selectivity of the different sampling methods used for aeglids.

RESUMO Racional: A devolução da funcionalidade contrátil da parede abdominal é uma das metas no reparo das hérnias abdominais. Contudo, o entendimento do core deve necessariamente fazer parte na escolha do método de avaliação desse desfecho. Objetivo: Avaliar o papel dos músculos da parede anterolateral na função da parede abdominal com base na correlação entre o sinal de ativação muscular obtido na eletromiografia de superfície e torque produzido durante testes de força validados. Métodos: A ativação dos músculos reto abdominal, oblíquo externo, e oblíquo interno e transverso foi avaliada por eletromiografia de superfície durante dois testes validados. Etapa: 1-A, contração isométrica em decúbito dorsal; 1-B, contração isométrica em decúbito lateral; 2-A, teste isocinético no Biodex; e 2-B, teste isométrico no Biodex. Resultados: Foram avaliados 20 voluntários saudáveis. O coeficiente de correlação linear entre os dados de valor quadrático médio/Pico obtidos análise do sinal da eletromiografia de superfície para cada músculo e o Pico de torque foram sempre <0,2 e estatisticamente insignificantes (p<0.05). A relação agonista/antagonista demonstrou correlação positiva, significativa e de fraca a moderada no músculo externo oblíquo (Pico, p=0,027; valor quadrático médio, 0,564). Os resultados eletromiografia de superfície estiveram positivamente correlacionados nos diferentes protocolos de contração abdominal e também com um questionário de atividade física diária. Conclusões: Não houve correlação entre o exame de eletromiografia de superfície e o torque mensurado por um instrumento validado, exceto em uma variável que não representa diretamente a geração de torque.

ABSTRACT Background: Restoring the contractile function to the abdominal wall is a major goal in hernia repair. However, the core understanding is required when choosing the method for outcome assessment. Aim: To assess the role of the anterolateral abdominal muscles on abdominal wall function in patients undergoing hernia repair by analysis of correlation between the surface electromyography activation signal of these muscles and torque produced during validated strength tests. Methods: Activation of the rectus abdominis, external oblique, and internal oblique/transverse abdominis muscles was evaluated by surface electromyography during two validated tests: Step: 1-A, isometric contraction in dorsal decubitus; 1-B, isometric contraction in lateral decubitus; 2-A, isokinetic Biodex testing; and 2-B, isometric Biodex testing. Results: Twenty healthy volunteers were evaluated. The linear correlation coefficient between root mean square/peak data obtained from surface electromyography signal analysis for each muscle and the peak torque variable was always <0.2 and statistically non-significant (p<0.05). The agonist/antagonist ratio showed a positive, significant, weak-to-moderate correlation in the external oblique (Peak, p=0.027; root mean square, 0.564). Surface electromyography results correlated positively among different abdominal contraction protocols, as well as with a daily physical activity questionnaire. Conclusions: There was no correlation between surface electromyography examination of the anterolateral abdominal wall muscles and torque measured by a validated instrument, except in a variable that does not directly represent torque generation.

RESUMO: Pachira aquatica (Malvaceae), conhecida como munguba, é cultivada para arborização de muitas cidades brasileiras. No campus de Seropédica da UFRRJ, observou-se o desfolhamento de um espécime de Pachira aquatica, com a presença de larvas, pré-pupas e pupas de besouro da subfamília Hyperinae, que foram criadas em laboratório até a emergência dos adultos; esses insetos foram identificados como pertencentes à espécie Phelypera griseofasciata Capiomont (Coleoptera: Curculionidae). Essas formas imaturas (n=86) foram novamente coletadas nesse mesmo espécime e criadas em laboratório para verificar a ocorrência de parasitismo. Foram obtidos 128 adultos de Jaliscoa nudipennis Bouček (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae), responsáveis por 44,2% do parasitismo total. A razão sexual foi de 0,70, portanto, o maior número de descendentes foi de fêmeas. Observaram-se ainda os dimorfismos inter e intrasexuais em J. nudipennis quanto ao formato da cabeça e às características das asas. Este estudo trata-se do primeiro registro de ambas as espécies de insetos associadas a Pachira aquatica no estado do Rio de Janeiro, Brasil.

ABSTRACT: Pachira aquatica (Malvaceae), known as munguba, is cultivated for afforestation of many Brazilian cities. In Seropédica campus of UFRRJ, it was observed the defoliation of one specimen of Pachira aquatica with presence of larvae, pre-pupae, and pupae of beetle of the subfamily Hyperinae, which were reared in laboratory until the emergence of the adults; these insects were identified as belonging to the species Phelypera griseofasciata Capiomont (Coleoptera: Curculionidae). These immature forms (n=86) were again collected in this same specimen and reared in laboratory to verify the occurrence of parasitism. It was obtained 128 adults of Jaliscoa nudipennis Bouček (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae), responsible for 44.2% of total parasitism. The sex ratio was 0.70, so the highest number of offspring was of females. Intersexual and intrasexual dimorphisms were also observed in J. nudipennis regarding the shape of the head and characteristics of the wings. This study is the first record of both insect species associated with Pachira aquatica in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

ABSTRACT Objective assess the factors associated with inappropriate blood pressure in hypertensive patients monitored in the Family Health Strategy. Method cross-sectional study, involving 417 people in Maringá, Paraná. The data were collected in the first semester of 2016, using the instrument satisfaction of hypertensive users with Primary Health Care services; using the questions related to the sociodemographic, nutritional and clinical profile. In the data analysis, descriptive and inferential statistics were applied. Results most interviewees, 62.4% were elderly, 67.8% female and 55.2% retired/pensioner. Inappropriate blood pressure was associated with people over 59 years of age, retired/pensioners, moderately active, without practicing physical exercise and weakly oriented about the disease. Conclusion the results signal the need to reorganize the work process, strengthening the orientations and health education for arterial hypertension patients.

RESUMEN Objetivo El propósito del estudio fue evaluar los factores asociados a la presión arterial inadecuada en personas con hipertensión acompañadas por la Estrategia Salud de la Familia. Método Fue un estudio trasversal, realizado con 417 personas, en el municipio de Maringá, Paraná. La obtención de datos ocurrió en el primer semestre de 2016, por medio del instrumento de satisfacción del usuario con hipertensión arterial con los servicios prestados por la Atención Primaria a la Salud, utilizando las cuestiones referentes a los perfiles socio demográfico, nutricional y clínico. En el análisis de los datos, se aplicó estadística descriptiva e inferencial. Resultados La mayoría de los entrevistados, 62,4%, era de ancianos, 67,8% del sexo femenino y 55,2% jubilado/pensionado. Hubo asociación de la presión arterial inadecuada con edades superiores a 59 años, jubilados/pensionados, moderadamente activos, no practicantes de actividades físicas y la debilidad de orientaciones acerca de la enfermedad. Conclusión Se concluye que hay la necesidad de reorganizar el proceso de trabajo y perfeccionar las orientaciones y la educación en salud de las personas con hipertensión arterial.

RESUMO Objetivo avaliar os fatores associados à pressão arterial inadequada em pessoas com hipertensão acompanhadas pela Estratégia Saúde da Família. Método estudo transversal, realizado com 417 pessoas, no município de Maringá, Paraná. A coleta de dados foi realizada no primeiro semestre de 2016, por meio do instrumento satisfação do usuário com hipertensão arterial com os serviços prestados pela Atenção Primária à Saúde, utilizando as questões referentes ao perfil sociodemográfico, nutricional e clínico. Na análise dos dados, aplicou-se estatística descritiva e inferencial. Resultados a maioria dos entrevistados, 62,4% era idoso, 67,8% do sexo feminino e 55,2% aposentado/pensionista. Houve associação da pressão arterial inadequada com pessoas de idade superior a 59 anos, aposentados/pensionistas, moderadamente ativos, não praticantes de atividades físicas e fragilidade nas orientações sobre a doença. Conclusão os resultados sinalizam a necessidade de reorganização do processo de trabalho, com o fortalecimento das orientações e educação em saúde às pessoas com hipertensão arterial.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to describe the behavior of newly-hatched juveniles and maternal care in Aegla schmitti. The experiment was conducted using seven ovigerous females with eggs at different stages of embryonic development and 12 eggs that had been placed in a separate aquarium. We observed asynchronous hatching in all females, with a mean of 66 hatched juveniles per female. The females also exhibited extended maternal care, allowing the juveniles to remain inside their abdominal chamber or on other parts of their body in the first few days after hatching. The juveniles that hatched in a separate aquarium fed on the remaining eggs, despite food being available. The incubation period and number of hatched eggs are highly variable between species with direct development, with no clear pattern being evident. However, asynchrony in hatching time is apparently common among freshwater anomurans, most likely due to the environmental conditions in which they live. Parental care is an important trait for crustaceans that live in osmotically unfavorable environments, such as freshwater, increasing the survival rate of juveniles.

Resumo O presente estudo descreve a percepção de estudantes do Ensino Médio acerca da utilização de um instrumento de avaliação diferenciado em aulas de Matemática: uma prova realizada em várias fases. Buscou-se identificar indícios de como viram e julgaram o instrumento (suas percepções), bem como identificar possíveis implicações de sua utilização sobre as estratégias de estudo desses estudantes. Para tal, foram analisados dados coletados por meio de um questionário respondido ao final da última fase da prova, bem como apontamentos por eles realizados em seus diários de aulas. As reflexões propiciadas a partir dessa análise possibilitaram compreender os próprios estudantes como sujeitos do processo de avaliação e permitiram analisar criticamente tanto o instrumento quanto a prática avaliativa do professor.

Abstract This study describes the perception of high school students about the use of a different assessment tool in Mathematics classes: a test carried out in several phases. We tried to identify evidence of how they saw and judged this instrument (their perceptions) and identify possible implications of this use on the student's study strategies. The data were analyzed and collected through a questionnaire answered by the students at the end of the last stage of the test, as well as notes performed by them in their daily lessons. The reflections afforded from this analysis helped us understand the students themselves as subjects of the assessment process and allowed a critical analysis of the instrument as well as of the teacher's assessment practice.

ZnWO4 particles were synthesized as a single-phase by a simple and easy solvo-hydrothermal technique using water-ethylene glycol mixture as solvent, without using surfactant. Physical properties of produced particles were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), surface area (BET), particles size distribution and atomic force microscopy (AFM). This material was used as support for inulinase immobilization by physical adsorption and the influence of temperature (30 and 50 ºC) was evaluated. Material with mesoporous characteristic and with a surface area of 35.5 m2.g-1 was obtained. According to the findings, ZnWO4 present a satisfactory inulinase adsorption, and the better result was 605 U.g-1 support at 30 ºC. Therefore, ZnWO4 particles prepared by one-step solvo/hydrothermal route provide a new potential support for inulinase immobilization.

Resumo Este artigo apresenta uma análise, à luz da Taxionomia revisada de Bloom, de itens de provas escritas de Matemática elaboradas por professores do Ensino Fundamental II e do Ensino Médio de escolas públicas. Esses professores participaram de oficinas que discutiram a temática "avaliação e aprendizagem", projeto de extensão que ocorreu no ano de 2013, e foram convidados a analisar provas escritas que eles mesmos elaboraram. Os resultados apontaram uma prevalência de itens classificados nos níveis mais baixos do domínio cognitivo da Taxionomia (lembrar, entender e aplicar) e uma quase ausência de itens nos níveis mais elevados (analisar, avaliar e criar). Tais resultados corroboram a necessidade de estudos e propostas de formação continuada que oportunizem aos professores repensar: (i) os instrumentos avaliativos que utilizaram (em geral, prioritariamente a prova escrita), (ii) a elaboração das tarefas que propõem (em geral, restritas aos modelos presentes em livros didáticos) e (iii) a sua própria prática avaliativa.

Abstract This article presents an analysis based on the Revised Bloom's Taxonomy of items of Mathematics written test questions prepared by teachers of Secondary School and High School public school. These teachers participated in workshops that discussed the theme "assessment and learning", a project in 2013 and they were asked to analyze the written test that they prepared. The results showed the prevalence of items classified in the lower levels of the cognitive domain of the Taxonomy (remember, understand and apply) and a near absence of items in the most developed levels (analyze, evaluate and create). These results support the need for studies and continuing education projects that encourages the teachers rethink: (i) the assessment instruments that they use (in general, mainly the written test); (ii) the development of the tasks proposed (generally restricted to "exercises-type" present in textbooks) and (iii) its own assessment practice.

RESUMO: O azevém anual (Lolium multuflorum Lam) é uma das plantas forrageiras de clima temperado mais cultivadas no mundo. Apesar disso, há poucas informações sobre o processo de alongamento de colmos para essa espécie durante seu crescimento vegetativo. Tal informação seria útil para o manejo mais adequado desta espécie. Assim, o objetivo do presente trabalho foi avaliar o acúmulo de forragem e as taxas de alongamento de colmos em pastos de azevém anual submetidos à lotação intermitente. O delineamento experimental foi completamente casualizado em arranjo factorial 2x2, com três repetições. Os tratamentos consistiram na combinação de duas alturas em pré-pastejo (15 e 25cm), associadas com duas alturas de resíduo (4 e 8cm). A maior taxa de acúmulo de forragem foi observada nos pastos manejadas com 25cm, associadas com alturas de resíduo de 8cm. Entretanto, a taxa de acúmulo de folhas foi similar para pastos manejados com 8cm de resíduo, independente da altura em pré-pastejo (15 ou 25cm). A taxa de alongamento de colmos em perfilhos de azevém anual aumentaram rapidamente quando os pastos atingiram uma altura de 18cm, condição onde havia uma relativa baixa competição por luz, sugerindo que: 1) alturas em pré-pastejo entre 18 e 20cm em pastos de azevém anual poderia ser usada como um limite máximo de altura quando o objetivo for minimizar a contribuição de colmos na forragem acumulada; e 2) parece que o alongamento de colmos é um processo inevitável (independente de competição por luz) e isso poderia estar relacionado com a força necessária de colmos, pseudocolmos e bainhas para suportar o peso de folhas cada vez maiores e mais pesadas.

ABSTRACT: Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam) is one of the most cultivated temperate annual forage crop around the world. Despite that, there is little information about the process of stem elongation during its vegetative growth. This information would be useful for grazing management purposes. Thus, the aim of this study was to assess the herbage accumulation and stem elongation rates in annual ryegrass pastures submitted to intermittent stocking. The experimental design used was a completely randomized 2x2 factorial with three replications. The treatments were defined by the combination of two pre-grazing heights (15 and 25cm) associated with two post-grazing heights (4 and 8cm). The herbage accumulation rates were higher in pastures with 25cm pre-grazing associated with post-grazing heights of 8cm. However, leaf production rate was only affected by post-grazing height, with higher values being recorded for stubbles heights of 8cm, regardless of pre-grazing height. Stem elongation rates in annual ryegrass tillers increased rapidly when pastures reached around 18cm, a condition where there was a relatively low competition for light, suggesting that; 1) pre-grazing heights of 18 to 20cm in annual ryegrass could be used as a upper limit for grazing management purposes whether the objective is to minimize stem contribution in accumulated herbage and 2) It seems that stem elongation is as inevitable process (independently of competition for light) and that this could be related to the necessary strength of stems, pseudostems and sheaths to support larger and heavier leaves.
