Resumo Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar o efeito da aplicação de plasma atmosférico na inativação de fungos na superfície de sementes de Erythrina velutina e em colônias fúngicas isoladas. Dois experimentos foram realizados em delineamento inteiramente casualizado: no primeiro, o plasma foi aplicado na superfície das sementes usando gás hélio e plasma atmosférico por três, seis e nove minutos, além do controle (sementes sem tratamento), constituindo sete tratamentos com cinco repetições cada; no segundo experimento, placas de Petri contendo o inóculo de diferentes fungos foram tratadas com plasma atmosférico por três, seis e nove minutos (Air-3, Air-6 e Air-9) e comparadas com fungos não tratados em placas de Petri sem tratamento (controle), totalizando quatro tratamentos e cinco repetições cada. Descobrimos que a aplicação de plasma atmosférico nas sementes de E. velutina por nove minutos teve efeito antimicrobiano sobre os fungos Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus flavus, Fusarium sp., Brachysporium sp. e Rhizopus sp. A formação de colônias fúngicas isoladas de sementes de E. velutina também foi inibida por três minutos de exposição à aplicação de plasma atmosférico, exceto para A. niger, cuja inibição ocorreu a partir de 6 minutos de exposição à aplicação de plasma atmosférico.

Abstract This study aimed to evaluate the effect of atmospheric plasma application on the inactivation of fungi on the surface of Erythrina velutina seeds and on isolated fungal colonies. Two experiments were conducted using a completely randomized design. First, plasma was applied to the surface of the seeds using helium gas and atmospheric plasma for 3, 6, and 9 min in addition to the control (untreated seeds), constituting seven treatments with five repetitions each. In the second experiment, Petri dishes containing the inoculum of different fungi were treated with atmospheric air plasma for 3, 6, and 9 min (Air-3, Air-6, and Air-9) and were compared with untreated fungi in Petri dishes without treatment (control), totaling four treatments and five repetitions each. We found that the application of atmospheric air plasma to E. velutina seeds for 9 min had an antimicrobial effect on the fungi Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus flavus, Fusarium sp., Brachysporium sp., and Rhizopus sp. The formation of fungal colonies isolated from E. velutina seeds was also inhibited by 3 min of exposure to atmospheric air plasma, except for A. niger, whose inhibition occurred after 6 min of exposure to atmospheric plasma.

ABSTRACT Given the quantitative scarcity of low-salinity water resources in the Brazilian semi-arid region, it is necessary to use water with a high concentration of salts. Thus, identifying salt-stress tolerant cultivars of crops is an alternative for expanding irrigated agriculture. The objective of this study was to evaluate the tolerance of passion fruit cultivars as a function of irrigation water electrical conductivity. The experimental design was randomized blocks, in a 5 × 3 factorial scheme, whose treatments consisted of the combination of five values of electrical conductivity of irrigation water - ECw (0.3, 1.1, 1.9, 2.7, and 3.5 dS m-1) and three sour passion fruit cultivars (BRS GA1, BRS SC1, and SCS437, with three replicates. Electrical conductivity of water from 0.3 dS m-1 reduces the relative water content, gas exchange, and the number of fruits and increased electrolyte leakage in the leaf blade of passion fruit plants, at 153 days after transplantation. The passion fruit cultivars BRS GA1, BRS SC1, and SCS437 were classified as sensitive, with threshold electrical conductivity of water of 0.3, 1.0, and 0.3 dS m-1, respectively.

RESUMO Diante da escassez quantitativa de recursos hidrícos de baixa salinidade no semiárido do brasileiro, fez-se necessário a utilização de águas com alta concentração de sais. Assim, a identificação de cultivares tolerantes ao estresse salino é uma alternativa para expansão da agricultura irrigada. Neste contexto, objetivou-se com este trabalho avaliar a tolerância de cultivares de maracujazeiro-azedo em função da condutividade elétrica da água de irrigação. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos ao acaso, em esquema fatorial 5 × 3, cujos tratamentos consistiram da combinação de cinco valores de condutividade elétrica da água de irrigação - CEa (0,3; 1,1; 1,9; 2,7 e 3,5 dS m-1), e três genótipos de maracujazeiro-azedo (BRS GA1, BRS SC1 e SCS437), com três repetições. A condutividade elétrica da água a partir de 0,3 dS m-1 diminuiu o conteúdo relativo de água, as trocas gasosas, o número de frutos, a produção por planta e aumentou o extravasamento de eletrólitos no limbo foliar das plantas de maracujazeiro-azedo, aos 153 dias após o transplantio. As cultivares de maracujazeiro-azedo BRS GA1, BRS SC1 e SCS437 foram classificadas como sensíveis à condutividade elétrica da água, com os níveis de salinidade limiar de 0,3; 1,0 e 0,3 dS m-1, respectivamente.

ABSTRACT Introduction: The Papanicolaou test smear helps detect cervical cancer in a timely manner in routine intervention. Objective: To analyze factors associated with screening for cervical cancer in women aged 12 to 49 years in Peru in 2019. Methods: An observational, analytical-cross-sectional study of a secondary analysis of data from 2019 Demographic and Family Health Survey was carried out. Two-stage, probabilistic, balanced, and stratified sampling. Descriptive and analytical statistics were used (level of inference p<0.05). For the bivariate and multivariate analysis, prevalence ratios were used with a 95% confidence interval and p<0.05. Results: The frequency of cervical cancer screening in the political regions with the lowest prevalence values were Pasco (0.52%) and Tumbes (0.55%). Discussion: The factors associated with cervical cancer screening are age, having a partner, higher education level, poor socioeconomic level, residing in a rural area, having health insurance, age at the start of sexual relations, and having heard of cervical cancer.

RESUMEN Introducción: La prueba de Papanicolau ayuda a detectar de manera oportuna en la intervención de rutina el cáncer de cuello uterino. Objetivo: Analizar factores asociados al tamizaje para cáncer de cuello uterino en mujeres de 12 a 49 años en Perú durante el año 2019. Metodología: Se realizó un estudio observacional, analítico-transversal de un análisis secundario de datos de la Encuesta Demográfica y de Salud Familiar del 2019. Muestreo bietápico, probabilístico, equilibrado y estratificado. Se utilizó estadística descriptiva y analítica (nivel de inferencia p<0.05). Para el análisis bivariado y multivariado se utilizaron razones de prevalencia con intervalo de confianza de 95% y p<0.05. Resultados: La frecuencia de tamizaje de cáncer de cuello uterino en las regiones políticas con menores valores de prevalencia fueron Pasco (0,52%) y Tumbes (0,55%). Discusión: Los factores asociados al tamizaje de cáncer de cuello uterino son la edad, tener pareja, nivel educación superior, nivel socioeconómico pobre, residir en área rural, tener seguro de salud, edad de inicio de relaciones sexuales y haber escuchado del cáncer de cuello uterino.

Resumo Espécies do gênero Cordia apresentam atividades biológicas, como anti-inflamatória, analgésica, antioxidante, antiviral e antifúngica. Para a espécie Cordia glabrata (MART) A.DC., ainda não existem informações sobre seu perfil fitoquímico e possíveis atividades biológicas, deste modo, o presente estudo teve como objetivo avaliar este perfil em extratos etanólicos de folhas jovens, adultas e senescentes, bem como o potencial antioxidante, fotoprotetor, antimicrobiano e virucida. A análise fitoquímica foi realizada por CCD (Cromatografia em Camada Delgada), mostrando a presença de flavonóides, taninos e terpenos. Na avaliação por CLAE EM/EM (Cromatografia Líquida de Ultra Eficiência acoplada a Espectrometria de Massas) foi evidenciado a presença dos ácidos caféico (3,89 mgL-1), p-cumárico (6,13 mgL-1) e ferúlico (0,58 mgL-1), paralelamente, na CG/EM (Cromatografia Gasosa acoplada a Espectrometria de Massas) verificou-se maior quantidade dos ácidos graxos palmítico (51,17%), esteárico (20,34%), linoléico (9,62%) e mirístico (8,16%). Os radicais DPPH (2,2-Difenil-1-picrilhidrazil) e ABTS+ (2′-Azino-bis (ácido 3-etilbenzotiazolina-6-sulfônico)) foram utilizados para verificar o potencial antioxidante, observando-se uma atividade superior para o extrato da folha em sua fase fenológica adulta: 54,63 ± 1,06 µgmL-1 (DPPH) e 44,21 ± 1,69 mM (ABTS+). A potencial atividade fotoprotetora dos extratos foi determinada espectrofotometricamente e os valores in vitro de FPS (Fator de Proteção Solar) em folhas jovens e adultas (5,47 e 5,41 respectivamente) apresentaram valores próximos ao FPS mínimo de 6,0 exigido pela ANVISA (Agência Nacional de Vigilância Sanitária). Não foi observada atividade antimicrobiana para Staphylococcus aureus sendo a concentração inibitória mínima de 2000 μgmL-1, no entanto o ensaio anti-herpético contra o vírus Herpes simplex tipo 2 (HSV-2) mostrou uma potente atividade virucida nas concentrações testadas com um valor de CV50 <0,195 μgmL-1 e um Índice de Seletividade (IS = CC50 / CV50) maior que 448. Os resultados obtidos neste estudo sugerem que extratos de folhas de C. glabrata em seu estágio fenológico adulto apresentam potencial antioxidante, fotoprotetora e virucida, considerando os resultados de testes in vitro.

Abstract Species of the genus Cordia have shown biological activities, such as anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antioxidant, antiviral, and antifungal activities. The species Cordia glabrata (MART) A.DC. Has no information concerning its phytochemical profile and possible biological activities. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate this profile in ethanolic extracts of young, adult and senescent leaves, as well as their antioxidant, photoprotective, antimicrobial, and virucidal potentials. Phytochemical analysis was performed by TLC (thin-layer chromatography) and showed the presence of flavonoids, tannins, and terpenes. The evaluation by UPLC-MS/MS (Ultra performance liquid chromatography - tandem mass spectrometer) evidenced the presence of caffeic (3.89 mgL-1), p-cumaric (6.13 mgL-1), and ferulic (0.58 mgL-1) acids, whilst, in GC/MS (Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry) analysis there was a greater amount of palmitic (51.17%), stearic (20.34%), linoleic (9.62%), and miristic (8.16%) fatty acids. The DPPH (2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) and ABTS+ (2′-Azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)) radicals were used to verify the potential antioxidant activity, observing a better activity for the leaf extract in the adult phenological stage: 54.63 ± 1.06 µgmL-1 (DPPH) and 44.21 ± 1.69 mM (ABTS). The potential photoprotective activity of the extracts was determined by spectrophotometry and the in vitro values of SPF (Sun Protection Factor) in young and adult leaves (5.47 and 5.41, respectively) showed values close to the minimum SPF of 6.0 required by ANVISA (Brazilian Health Regulatory Agency). It was not observed an antimicrobial activity for Staphylococcus aureus with a minimum inhibitory concentration of 2000 μgmL-1, however the anti-herpetic assay against the Herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) showed a potent virucidal activity at the tested concentrations with CV50 value <0.195 μgmL-1 and a Selectivity Index (SI = CC50 / CV50) greater than 448. The results obtained in this study suggest that extracts of leaves of C. glabrata in their adult phenological stage have potential antioxidant, photoprotective and virucidal activity, considering in vitro test results.

ABSTRACT In this work, a mathematical model of efficiencies for hybrid Fuel Cell (FC) systems is presented, considering the series (SH), parallel (PH), and serial-parallel (SPH) topologies. In these systems, were implemented modular non-inverting Buck-Boost converters. Their efficiency functions depend on their operating points, particularly their output currents and operation modes (Buck, Boost, and Buck-Boost). In addition, the DC Bus efficiency has been modeled and used in each system, corresponding to a function of the load duty cycle with a frequency of 100 Hz. This DCBus'speakpower and nominal voltage correspond to 1.5 kW and 48 V, respectively. These hybrid systems were implemented in SIMULINK/MATLAB®, considering the capacitors' initial voltage or pre-charge conditions to reduce the computation time. The analytical and experimental results are validated using the Nash-Sutcliffe Coefficient of Efficiency (NSE).

RESUMEN En este trabajo se presenta un modelo matemático de eficiencias para sistemas híbridos Fuel Cell (FC), considerando las topologías serie (SH), paralelo (PH) y serie-paralelo (SPH). En estos sistemas, se implementaron convertidores Buck-Boost modulares no inversores. Sus funciones de eficiencia dependen de sus puntos de operación, particularmente de sus corrientes de salida y modos de operación (Buck, Boost y Buck-Boost). Además, la eficiencia del Bus de DC se ha modelado y utilizado en cada sistema, el cual corresponde una función del ciclo de trabajo de carga con una frecuencia de 100 Hz. La potencia pico y la tensión nominal de este bus de CC corresponden a 1,5 kW y 48 V, respectivamente. Estos sistemas híbridos fueron implementados en SIMULINK / MATLAB®, considerando condiciones iniciales de tensión o de precarga en los capacitores para reducir el tiempo de cómputo. Los resultados analíticos y experimentales se validan mediante el coeficiente de eficiencia de Nash-Sutcliffe (NSE).

Resumen Introducción: La obstrucción intestinal por ingesta accidental de cuerpos extraños se presenta muy rara vez en la edad pediátrica debido a que del 80 al 90% de los objetos pueden pasar libremente por el tracto gastrointestinal. Caso clínico: Se aborda el caso de una paciente de sexo femenino de 1 año 2 meses quien presentó obstrucción intestinal debido a la ingesta de esferas de hidrogel (poliacrilato de sodio). Dichas esferas, que son utilizadas como juguetes didácticos o sensoriales, aumentan de 200 a 400 veces su tamaño inicial mediante la absorción de agua. Se realizó radiografía abdominal en proyección decúbito supino, donde llamó la atención el hallazgo de defecto de llenado redondeado en asa de flanco derecho, ya que las esferas de hidrogel son radiolúcidas. El diagnóstico se estableció mediante ultrasonido abdominal, donde se reportó líquido libre peritoneal con datos de suboclusión por cuerpos extraños a nivel intestinal. Se indicó tratamiento conservador, encontrando persistencia de aumento de perímetro abdominal. Se realizó enterotomía y se encontraron las esferas impactadas a 30 centímetros de la válvula ileocecal. Conclusiones: Las esferas de hidrogel son peligrosas para la población pediátrica. La evolución de la paciente fue favorable debido al conocimiento del objeto extraño ingerido. Sobresale la conducta expectante que se tuvo que desempeñar debido a que se desconocía el crecimiento de las esferas y en qué momento no podrían continuar su paso por el tracto gastrointestinal.

Abstract Background: Bowel obstruction due to accidental ingestion of foreign objects occurs rarely in children because 80 to 90% of the objects can pass freely through the gastrointestinal tract. Case report: We report a case of a 14-month-old infant who presented bowel obstruction caused by the ingestion of hydrogel beads (sodium polyacrylate). Hydrogel beads are used as sensory and didactic toys that can increase their initial size 200 to 400 times by liquid absorption. An abdominal X-ray was perfomed in anteroposterior supine projection, where a round filling defect at the loop of the right flank was detected; this came to our attention because hydrogel beads are usually radiolucent. The diagnosis was established by abdominal ultrasound where free intraperitoneal fluid was reported with data of small bowel pseudo-obstruction by foreign objects. Conservative treatment was prescribed, finding persistence of increased abdominal perimeter, so an enterotomy was performed for their removal; finding impacted hydrogel beads 30 centimeters from the ileocecal valve. Conclusions: Hydrogel beads are dangerous for the pediatric population. The evolution of the patient was favorable thanks to the knowledge of the foreign objects ingested. The expectant behavior that had to be executed, stands out because we had no knowledge as to the maximum size of the hydrogel in the gastrointestinal tract.

Resumen En México, Theobroma cacao es afectado por la mancha negra (MN) causada por Phytophthora capsici. Actualmente se carece de un estudio epidemiológico de esta enfermedad. El objetivo fue conocer la influencia del clima, fructificación y la incidencia de la moniliasis (Moniliophthora roreri) en la intensidad epidémica de MN en cinco localidades del sureste de México. Se analizó la estructura temporal epidémica de MN y se estudió la correlación de cambios absolutos de incidencia MN con temperatura, humedad relativa (HR), precipitación, y flujos de fructificación. La posible competencia entre P. capcisi y M. roreri también se analizó correlativamente. Las epidemias tuvieron una duración de 15 a 25 semanas restringidas a septiembre - febrero con incidencias finales (Y f ) del 6 al 24%. Las curvas se ajustaron al modelo Gompertz (r = 0.059 - 0.123, R2 0.97 - 0.99) con fase exponencial en octubre correspondiendo con la mayor precipitación pluvial. La MN se asoció positivamente con HR mayor al 90%, precipitación, periodos de temperaturas menores de 19.9 y de 20 - 26.9 °C, y con intensidad de fructificación. P. capcisi tuvo menor aptitud parasítica que M. roreri, el cual indujo epidemias más tempranas, con mayor duración e intensidad. La caracterización de MN como epidemia policíclica justifica estrategias de manejo dirigidas a la reducción del inóculo secundario.

Abstract In Mexico, Theobroma cacao is affected by the black pod rot (BPR) caused by Phytophthora capsici. Currently, an epidemiological study of this disease is lacking. The objective was to determine the influence of climate, fruit set and the incidence of cacao frosty pod rot (Moniliophthora roreri) on the epidemic intensity of BPR in five locations in southeastern Mexico. The temporal structure of BPR epidemics was analyzed and the correlation of absolute change of BPR incidence with temperature, relative humidity (RH), precipitation, and fruiting flows was studied. The possible competition between P. capcisi and M. roreri was also analyzed correlatively. The epidemics had a duration of 15 to 25 weeks restricted to September - February with 6 to 24% final incidence (Y f ). The curves were best fitted to the Gompertz model (r = 0.059 - 0.123, R2 0.97 - 0.99) with an exponential phase in October corresponding with the highest rainfall. BPR was positively associated with RH greater than 90%, precipitation, temperature periods lower than 19.9, and 20 - 26.9 °C, and with fruiting intensity. P. capcisi had less parasitic fitness than M. roreri, which induced earlier epidemics, with greater duration and intensity. The characterization of BPR as a polycyclic epidemic justifies management strategies aimed at reducing the secondary inoculum.

Abstract The limitation in the quality of water sources for irrigation in the semi-arid region of northeastern Brazil is increasingly present, so it is necessary to use water with high concentrations of salts for agricultural production, which makes the use of elicitors essential to mitigate the harmful effects of salinity on plants. Given the above, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of foliar application of salicylic acid on the mineral composition and production of guava plants under salt stress conditions in the post-grafting phase. The experiment was carried out under greenhouse conditions, in a randomized block design, in a 2 × 4 factorial scheme, with two levels of electrical conductivity of irrigation water (0.6 and 3.2 dS m-1) and four concentrations of salicylic acid (0, 1.2, 2.4, and 3.6 mM), with three replicates. During the flowering stage of guava, N, P, and K contents accumulated in the leaves according to the following order of concentration: N > K > P. Foliar application of 1.2 mM of salicylic acid increases the leaf contents of N, P, and K in guava plants grown under irrigation with water of 0.6 dS m-1. Water salinity of 3.2 dS m-1 reduces the growth and production components of guava plants.

Resumo A limitação na qualidade das fontes hídricas para irrigação na região semiárida do Nordeste é cada vez mais presente, tornando-se necessário o uso de águas com altas concentrações de sais para produção agrícola, o que torna indispensável à utilização de elicitores para atenuar os efeitos deletérios da salinidade sobre as plantas. Diante do exposto, objetivou-se com esse trabalho avaliar os efeitos da aplicação foliar de ácido salicílico na composição mineral e na produção de plantas de goiabeira sob condições de estresse salino na fase pós-enxertia. O experimento foi conduzido em casa de vegetação, no delineamento experimental de blocos casualizados, em esquema fatorial 2 × 4, sendo dois níveis de condutividade elétrica da água de irrigação (0,6 e 3,2 dS m-1) e quatro concentrações de ácido salicílico (0; 1,2; 2,4 e 3,6 mM), com três repetições. Durante a fase de floração da goiabeira, os teores de N, P, K, se acumularam nas folhas segundo a ordem de concentração N > K > P. A aplicação foliar de 1,2 mM de ácido salicílico aumentou os teores foliares de nitrogênio, fósforo e potássio nas plantas de goiabeira cultivadas sob irrigação com água de 0,6 dS m-1. A salinidade da água de 3,2 dS m-1 diminuiu o crescimento e os componentes de produção das plantas de goiabeira.

Abstact In this work an artificial neural network (ANN) was used to determine the pressure and internal energy equations of state of noble gases and some molecular liquids by predicting thermodynamic state variables like density and temperature encoded in the radial distribution function. The ANN is trained to predict the thermodynamic state variables using only the structural data. Then, predicted values are used to compute equations of state of real liquids such as argon, neon, krypton and xenon as well as some molecular liquids like nitrogen, carbon dioxide, methane and ethylene in the supercritical regime of each fluid. In order to assess the ANN predictions the relative percentage error with the exact values were determined, showing that its magnitude is less than 1%. Thus, the comparison between equations of state computed with the predicted variables and experimental results exhibits a very good agreement for most of the liquids studied here. Since our ANN implementation only requires the microscopic structure as an input, data incoming from experiments, theoretical frameworks or simulations are suitable to perform predictions of state variables and with that complement the thermodynamic characterisation of liquids through the determination of equations of state. Moreover, further improvements or extensions related with the microscopic structure database can be safely addressed without changing the neural network architecture presented here.

Abstract The requirements of high quality factor, low power consumption, easy design techniques, and compatibility with the main standard fabrication processes of integrated circuits (IC) make the tunable piezoelectric resonators a suitable option for the new technologies of fifth generation of telecommunication (5G) and Internet of Things (IoT). In this work the nonlinear state equations for piezoelectric effect are presented. From these equations we may deduce which materials can be used in applications where a hysteresis behavior or resonance frequency tunability are required; additionally, it is shown which crystals have the nonlinear tensor's symmetry compatible with each application field. A novel model for the tunable piezoelectric devices is shown taking into account the consequences of voltage tuning. Finally, three different ways to design and implement the nonlinear behavior of piezoelectric materials to tune devices are introduced.

Mercury (Hg) contamination of oceans is rapidly increasing, however Hg bioaccumulation in pinnipeds has been understudied. Here, we report for the first time Hg concentration in liver tissues of South American fur seals (Arctocephalus australis) in South and Southeast Brazil. Hg concentration was determined in twenty-five fur seals’ specimens found stranded along the coast of the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean. Samples were digested using the microwave technique and quantified by cold vapor generation atomic fluorescence spectrometry technique. The average Hg concentration was 6.37 mg kg-1 (wet weight), with a minimum concentration of 0.09 mg kg-1 and the highest concentration of 15.58 mg kg-1. No correlation between biological variables (sex, total length and weight) and Hg concentration in A. australis liver were found. The results presented here are of great importance to establish baselines for future evaluations of Hg contamination in marine mammals and the effects of this environmental problem in animal health.

Resumen: El principal objetivo de esta investigación es evaluar la inclusión de la variabilidad climática natural en los proyectos del Plan de Ordenación y Manejo de Cuenca Hidrográfica (POMCA) del río Cravo Sur (Casanare, Colombia) a través del Índice de Evaluación del Sistema de Gestión (IESG). La mayoría de los proyectos incluyen la variabilidad climática (68.75%), pero en un 31.25% requieren ser revisados desde una gestión hídrica integral. Los resultados indican que los proyectos muestran diferencias en las actividades correspondientes a la valoración “específica” en un 18.75%, en los indicadores relacionados con el “seguimiento” en un 81.25%, en el riesgo “preventivo” en un 87.50% y en la cobertura asociada a la escala espacial “regional” en un 31.25%. En conclusión, estos resultados permiten entender el comportamiento climático del río Cravo Sur, sin embargo, la cobertura de los mismos necesita ser ampliada para mejorar las decisiones de corto, mediano y largo plazo, bajo escenarios futuros de un clima variante en el tiempo.

Abstract: The main objective of this research study is to assess the inclusion of natural climate variability into projects of the Hydrographic Basin Planning and Management Program (Plan de Ordenación y Manejo de Cuenca Hidrográfica, POMCA) of the Cravo Sur River basin (Casanare, Colombia) by using the system management evaluation index (IESG, in Spanish). Most projects include climate variability (68.75%), but 31.25% of them need to be reviewed from an integrated water management perspective. The results show that the projects assessed differed on their "specific" activities (18.75%), "follow-up" indicators (81.25%), "preventive" risk (87.50%), and "regional" spatial scale coverage (31.25%). In conclusion, these results serve to better understand Cravo Sur River’s climate, but the projects’ coverage needs to be expanded to improve short, medium, and long-term decisions for future time-varying climate scenarios.

Resumen Objetivo. Evaluar los indicadores de resultado del programa especializado de accesos vasculares liderado por enfermería durante el periodo comprendido entre enero 1ro de 2018 -diciembre 31 de 2019 en la Fundación Cardioinfantil -Instituto de Cardiología en Colombia. Métodos. Estudio descriptivo retrospectivo, con base en historias clínicas de 1210 pacientes que recibieron la inserción de dispositivos de acceso vascular por el grupo especializado de enfermeras. Se describen indicadores de resultado. Resultados. Del total de pacientes que recibieron la inserción de un catéter vía acceso vascular, el 53.1% fueron mujeres, con edad promedio de 34.2 años, admitidos en servicios de cuidado crítico con problemas cardiovasculares y sepsis (90.2%). La colocación del catéter central de inserción periférica, de línea media y arterial fue eco-guiada entre el 91-100%, con una tasa de éxito a la primera punción del 66%. El tiempo promedio de duración del catéter central de inserción periférica fue de 25.3 días, la del catéter de línea media fue de 8 días, con un alcance del 57% hasta el final del tratamiento. La tasa observada por días-catéter de flebitis global fue de 2.03, para hemocultivo positivo del dispositivo central de inserción periférica fue de 1.9 y trombosis de 0.50; y trombosis de la línea arterial fue de 11.7. Conclusión. El programa de dispositivos de acceso vascular liderado por enfermería reportó un uso racional de estos elementos con fines terapéuticos estructurados de acuerdo con la complejidad de los pacientes admitidos a hospitalización. Planes de mejora deben ser implementados con el fin de incrementar la eficacia en los tiempos de inserción pos-admisión, reducción de tasa de infección y trombosis mediante mecanismos efectivos de seguimiento y control.

Abstract Objective. This work sought to evaluate result indicators of the specialized vascular access program led by nursing during the period between 01 January 2018 and 31 December 2019 at Fundación Cardioinfantil -Instituto de Cardiología (Colombia). Methods. This was a retrospective descriptive study based on medical records of 1,210 patients who received insertion of vascular access devices by the specialized group of nurses. Result indicators are described. Results. Of all the patients who received insertion of a vascular access catheter, 53.1% were women, with mean age of 34.2 years, admitted to critical care services with cardiovascular problems and sepsis (90.2%). Placement of the peripherally inserted central catheter, midline and arterial was echo-guided between 91% and 100%, with a success rate on the first puncture of 66%. The average duration time of the peripherally inserted central catheter was 25.3 days, that of the midline catheter was 8 days, with a reach of 57% until the end of the treatment. The rate observed per catheter-days of overall phlebitis was 2.03, for positive blood culture of the central peripheral insertion device was 1.9 and thrombosis of 0.50; and arterial line thrombosis was 11.7. Conclusion. The Vascular Access Device Program led by nursing reported rational use of these elements with structured therapeutic purposes according with the complexity of the patients admitted to hospitalization. Improvement plans must be implemented to increase efficacy in post-admission insertion times, reduce infection rate and thrombosis through effective follow-up and control mechanisms.

Métodos. Estudo descritivo retrospectivo, com base nas histórias clínicas de 1210 pacientes que receberam a inserção de dispositivos de acesso vascular pelo grupo especializado de enfermeiras. Se descrevem indicadores de resultado. Resultados. Do total de pacientes que receberam a inserção de um cateter via acesso vascular, 53.1% foram mulheres, com idade média de 34.2 anos, admitidos em serviços de cuidado crítico com problemas cardiovasculares e sepses (90.2%). Resumen: Antecedentes y Objetivos: Diversos estudios han destacado el importante papel de los monos aulladores (Alouatta palliata mexicana) en la dispersión de semillas y, con ello, en la regeneración de las poblaciones de plantas con frutos carnosos de los bosques tropicales. Sin embargo, poca es la evidencia empírica sobre cuáles podrían ser los mecanismos que les permitiría a los monos aulladores favorecer la germinación de las semillas de muchas especies de plantas, incluyendo la escarificación de su cubierta externa. En este trabajo se evaluó si los endocarpos de Spondias mombin (Anacardiaceae), una especie importante en la dieta de los monos aulladores, podrían ser escarificados al pasar por el tracto digestivo de estos primates. Métodos: Se colectaron endocarpos de las heces de monos aulladores, así como frutos maduros del suelo, en la región de Los Tuxtlas, municipio Catemaco, Veracruz, México. Mediante cortes transversales de los endocarpos y su análisis en el microscopio electrónico de barrido, se tomaron medidas del grosor de la cubierta externa y probaron las diferencias entre ambos tipos de muestras (i.e., endocarpos de frutos y endocarpos que pasaron por el tracto digestivo). Resultados clave: Se observó que el grosor de la cubierta de los endocarpos en frutos fue mayor ( X ~=47.05±9.69 µm) que el de endocarpos en heces ( X ~=1.51±3.60 µm) (W=0.48, p<0.001). Conclusiones: Los resultados evidencian que la ingesta de endocarpos de S. mombin por A. p. mexicana puede tener un efecto de escarificación de los tejidos que conforman su cubierta externa. Esto apoya la versión sobre la función de los frugívoros, como los monos aulladores, reduciendo la cubierta externa de las semillas y aumentando así su capacidad para germinar; siendo, por lo tanto, organismos clave en la dinámica de regeneración de bosques tropicales.

Abstract: Background and Aims: Several studies have emphasized the important role of howler monkeys (Alouatta palliata mexicana) in seed dispersal and, as a result, in the regeneration of fleshy-fruited plant populations in tropical forests. However, there is little empirical evidence regarding the possible mechanisms that would allow howler monkeys to promote seed germination of many plant species, including seed coat scarification. In this study, we evaluated whether endocarps of Spondias mombin (Anacardiaceae), an important species in howler monkey diet, could be scarified by passage through the digestive tract of these primates. Methods: We collected endocarps from howler monkey feces as well as ripe fruits fallen on the ground, in the region of Los Tuxtlas, Catemaco municipality, Veracruz, Mexico. By analyzing endocarp transverse sections using a scanning electron microscope, we measured the thickness of the outer layer and tested differences between both types of samples (i.e., fruit endocarps and endocarps that had passed through the digestive tract). Key results: We observed that the outer layer thickness of endocarps in fruits was greater ( X ~=47.05±9.69 µm) than that of endocarps found in feces ( X ~=1.51±3.60 µm) (W=0.48, p<0.001). Conclusions: Our results highlight that consumption of S. mombin endocarps by A. p. mexicana may have a scarification effect on the tissues that constitute the outer layer. This supports the hypothesis of the role of frugivores, such as howler monkeys, in reducing the seed coat and thus increasing germination ability; therefore, being key organisms in regeneration dynamics of tropical forests.

Abstract The formation of dense water masses at polar regions has been largely influenced by climate changes arising from global warming. In this context, based on ensemble simulations with a coupled model we evaluate the meridional shift of a climate signal (i.e., a cold and fresh water input pulse generated from melting of positive Antarctic sea ice (ASI) extremes) towards the Tropical Atlantic Ocean (TAO). This oceanic signal propagated from Southern Ocean towards the equator through the upper layers due to an increase in its buoyance. Its northward shift has given by the Subantarctic Mode Water (SAMW) and Antarctic Intermediate Water (AAIW) flows, that inject cold and fresh mode/intermediate waters from into subtropical basin. The signal has reached low latitudes through the equatorial upwelling and spreads out southwards, through the upper branch of southern subtropical gyre. We concluded that 10 years of coupled simulations was enough time to propagate the climate signal generated by ASI positive extremes melting, which reached TOA around 2 year later. The oceanic connection between Southern Ocean and TAO is indeed established within the timescale analyzed in the study (10 years). Nonetheless, the period needed to completely dissipate the disturbance generated from ASI seems to be longer.
