Abstract The present research, framed in a collective case study, analyzed 26 lesson plans focused on productive discussion, a practice that promotes learning opportunities under the dynamics of interaction in the classroom, elaborated by 14 chemistry teachers in training who simultaneously studied didactics and professional practice in the second semester of 2021 in different educational centers of the Metropolitan Region (Chile). The objective was to characterize by means of the didactic dimension of the development plans of scientific thinking (PPC), the theoretical load of the questions/statements in the promotion of productive discussion, in addition to identifying the approach/strategy developed: history of chemistry (HdQ), nature of science (NOS), socio-scientific problems (CTS-A), or daily context. In 3 of the 26 plans that identified HdQ, CTS-A and/or NOS, atlas ti software was used to analyze the narrative of the entire class, where the results of co-occurrence showed the relationship between discussion with socialization, scientific thinking skills (explanation) and instrumental, personal and social PPCs, providing empirical evidence of how this didactic dimension would allow guiding both the implementation of productive discussion and the instances of reflection in the professional practice workshops.

ABSTRACT Oral myiasis is a rare parasitic disease that requires immediate treatment once diagnosed. However, no standard treatment protocol can be found in the literature. Through a clinical-surgical report, we present the case of an 82-year-old man with lesions extending through the vestibule and alveolar ridge of the maxilla on both sides, in addition to occupying a large part of the palate, with a considerable number of larvae. The patient was initially treated with a single dose of systemic ivermectin (6 mg orally) and topical application of a tampon soaked in ether. The larvae were then surgically removed and debridement of the wound was performed. A crushed tablet of ivermectin 6 mg was applied topically for 2 days, the remaining larvae were again mechanically removed, and the patient received intravenous antimicrobial therapy. Treatment with systemic and topical ivermectin combined with antibiotic therapy and debridement proved to be effective in treating oral myiasis.

ABSTRACT. The objective was to assess the physiological and behavioral variables of pasture-raised Holstein heifers on the basis of their coat color. Eight heifers were used, four with black coat, and four with white coat. In the morning and afternoon periods, their physiological variables were measured, namely respiratory rate (RR, mov min. -1), rectal temperature (TR, ºC), and coat surface temperature (TS, ºC). The behavior analysis considered the site (sun or shade), position (standing or lying down), and activities (idleness, rumination, grazing, and others). The data of the physiological variables were assessed through analysis of variance, and significance, through Tukey’s test at 5%, while behavioral data were assessed using the Chi-squared test (SAS Software). There was a difference for all of the heifers’ physiological variables as a function of coat color (p < 0.0001) and period (p < 0.0001), with black ones showing greater results than white ones as to all physiological variables in the afternoon period (p < 0.0001). Grazing behavior is reduced during the hottest hours of the day. We conclude that solar radiation changes the physiological variables and grazing behavior of pasture-raised Holstein heifers.

Abstract This study aimed to assess the lifestyle of undergraduate university students, and to investigate the prevalence of risk behaviors for chronic noncommunicable diseases. This cross-sectional study took place in Brasilia, with 2.163 healthcare undergraduates. We used a self-administered questionnaire for demographic variables, social class, behavioral data, self-perception of health and self-reported diseases. Given a total of 2.163 students, 69.3% were female, 65.4% were 20-29 years, men smoked more cigarettes (p < 0.01) and used more alcohol than women. We found significant differences in the consumption of beans (p < 0.04) and full-fat milk (p < 0.01) between females and males. Women also had more sedentary lifestyles (p < 0.01) and showed higher prevalences of overweight (33.8%) and obesity (5.0%). Students who did not engage in physical activity were more morbidities, overweight (p = 0.03), consumed more soft drinks (p < 0.01) and meat with excess fat (p = 0.01). University students were found to have unhealthy lifestyles. There is an urgent need for both a formulation and implementation of public health policies to promote health and improve student quality of life (QoL).

Abstract Background The SARS-COV2 pandemic has deeply affected the availability for training and competing for recreational and professional athletes. However, to date, the disease’s course among the athletic population has not been *studied . Objectives To compare the observed and expected rates of hospitalization for COVID-19 and to establish relationships between demographics and sportive characteristics of an athletic sample, and the COVID-19 infection rate. Material and Methods This study uses cross-sectional data sampling through an online questionnaire to collect data from recreational and professional athletes. Based on self-reports, athletes were grouped in COVID-19 and Non-COVID-19 cases. To decrease detection bias for each four patients who reported being hospitalized, one additional virtual patient was added to the sample. The observed rate of hospitalization (ORH) was compared with age expected rate of hospitalization (ERH) from the literature data. A multivariate model (MM) was developed to establish independent relationships between the prevalence of COVID-19 cases and the variables mentioned above. The statistical significance level was defined for a p-value<0.05. Results Answers from 1,701 individuals were analyzed. The COVID-19 group was comprised of 99 (5.8%) individuals, four of whom reported having been hospitalized. ORH and ERH were respectively of 5.0% and 18.1% (p=0.001). In the MM female gender (OR=2.02, 95% CI 1.28 to 3.19), cycling (OR=2.91, 95% CI 1.58 to 5.39), swimming (OR=2.97, 95% CI 1.14 to 7.74), and triathlon (OR=2.10, 95% CI 1.13 to 3.91) were independently associated with a COVID-19 prevalence. Conclusion Self-reported rates of hospitalization for COVID-19 among athletes were much lower than expected. The prevalence of positive cases of COVID-19 was independently higher for cyclists, triathletes, and swimmers than for runners.

Abstract Objective: To describe fluid resuscitation practices in Brazilian intensive care units and to compare them with those of other countries participating in the Fluid-TRIPS. Methods: This was a prospective, international, cross-sectional, observational study in a convenience sample of intensive care units in 27 countries (including Brazil) using the Fluid-TRIPS database compiled in 2014. We described the patterns of fluid resuscitation use in Brazil compared with those in other countries and identified the factors associated with fluid choice. Results: On the study day, 3,214 patients in Brazil and 3,493 patients in other countries were included, of whom 16.1% and 26.8% (p < 0.001) received fluids, respectively. The main indication for fluid resuscitation was impaired perfusion and/or low cardiac output (Brazil: 71.7% versus other countries: 56.4%, p < 0.001). In Brazil, the percentage of patients receiving crystalloid solutions was higher (97.7% versus 76.8%, p < 0.001), and 0.9% sodium chloride was the most commonly used crystalloid (62.5% versus 27.1%, p < 0.001). The multivariable analysis suggested that the albumin levels were associated with the use of both crystalloids and colloids, whereas the type of fluid prescriber was associated with crystalloid use only. Conclusion: Our results suggest that crystalloids are more frequently used than colloids for fluid resuscitation in Brazil, and this discrepancy in frequencies is higher than that in other countries. Sodium chloride (0.9%) was the crystalloid most commonly prescribed. Serum albumin levels and the type of fluid prescriber were the factors associated with the choice of crystalloids or colloids for fluid resuscitation.

O Revalida 2016 abordou todas as áreas.
Abstract: Introduction: Enade is a cognitive test that evaluates the performance of undergraduate programs through its students. Revalida is a specific exam for graduates from foreign medicine programs. Despite having different functions, the two tests assess the same target audience and can be considered analogous. Objective: The objective was to identify and compare the contents of ENADE and REVALIDA. Methods: a descriptive study that compared the contents of ENADE 2013 and 2016 and REVALIDA 2015 and 2016 with reference to the contents of the REVALIDA Curriculum Correspondence Matrix (RCCM). In the first stage of the study, two doctors, professors of Medicine, independently analyzed the items of the four tests and listed the contents covered in the statements and alternatives. The results were subsequently consolidated. The content analysis of the exams was carried out using frequency distribution of the concentration areas and the themes according to the test and comparison between the areas of concentration and themes that coincided in each test. Results: considering the 46 areas of concentration of the RCCM, 10 areas were not covered in ENADE 2013, six in Enade 2016 and two in Revalida 2015. Revalida 2016 covered all areas. Regarding the 749 specific themes of the RCCM, the two editions of Enade, together, addressed 241 (32.2%) of them, whereas the two editions of Revalida addressed 468 (62.5%) themes. Analysis of the topics covered showed that of the 241 of Enade, 45 were common to both editions, while 247 of a total of 468 were addressed in both editions of Revalida. When considering repetition of the same topic in each edition of each exam, it was found that around 80.0% of the topics were considered only once in the two editions of ENADE compared to 50.0% in the editions of Revalida. Conclusion: the results indicate that ENADE has a lower content validity than Revalida. There was also a concentration in specific groups of themes, and repetition of a small group of themes in the analyzed editions of ENADE, which also reduces the reliability of the exam.

Abstract The loss of continuity of the nerve structure interrupts the transmission of nerve impulses and leads to the disorganization of functional activities. Many methods, as the use of neurogenic factors, aid in the process of neural regeneration by accelerating or improving peripheral nerves neoformation. The adipose tissue is abundant in the human body, and it has presented promising results in the regeneration of peripheral nerves. We carried out a randomized controlled study in 9 months, using 45 male Wistar rats, 80 days old, and the sciatic nerve was chosen for analysis. The control animals were divided into three groups – Initial group (IG), Final group (FG), and denervated group (DG) – with seven animals each. The experimental groups, with twelve animals each, were polyethylene tube filled with fat (EGF) and polyethylene tube without filling (EGwf). All groups, except IG, were submitted to 10 sessions of hyperbaric oxygen treatment of 1h 45 min in alternating days. Functional evaluation by walking-track was assessed using the Catwalk XT® software and tissues were harvested and stained with 1% toluidine blue for histological analysis. Quantitative data were first analyzed with the Kolmogorov Smirnov normality test. Comparison between the four groups was analyzed by ANOVA followed by Tukey Test. We concluded that hyperbaric oxygen therapy had positive results on morphometric and functional parameters. However, no significant differences were found regarding the use of autologous fat graft.

OBJECTIVES: To compare demographic/clinical/laboratory/treatments and outcomes among children and adolescents with laboratory-confirmed coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study that included patients diagnosed with pediatric COVID-19 (aged <18 years) between April 11, 2020 and April 22, 2021. During this period, 102/5,951 (1.7%) of all admissions occurred in neonates, children, and adolescents. Furthermore, 3,962 severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) detection samples were processed in patients aged <18 years, and laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 occurred in 155 (4%) inpatients and outpatients. Six/155 pediatric patients were excluded from the study. Therefore, the final group included 149 children and adolescents (n=97 inpatients and 52 outpatients) with positive SARS-CoV-2 results. RESULTS: The frequencies of sore throat, anosmia, dysgeusia, headache, myalgia, nausea, lymphopenia, pre-existing chronic conditions, immunosuppressive conditions, and autoimmune diseases were significantly reduced in children and adolescents (p<0.05). Likewise, the frequencies of enoxaparin use (p=0.037), current immunosuppressant use (p=0.008), vasoactive agents (p=0.045), arterial hypotension (p<0.001), and shock (p=0.024) were significantly lower in children than in adolescents. Logistic regression analysis showed that adolescents with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 had increased odds ratios (ORs) for sore throat (OR 13.054; 95% confidence interval [CI] 2.750-61.977; p=0.001), nausea (OR 8.875; 95% CI 1.660-47.446; p=0.011), and lymphopenia (OR 3.575; 95% CI 1.355-9.430; p=0.010), but also had less hospitalizations (OR 0.355; 95% CI 0.138-0.916; p=0.032). The additional logistic regression analysis on patients with preexisting chronic conditions (n=108) showed that death as an outcome was significantly associated with pediatric severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) (OR 22.300; 95% CI 2.341-212.421; p=0.007) and multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) (OR 11.261; 95% CI 1.189-106. 581; p=0.035). CONCLUSIONS: Half of the laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 cases occurred in adolescents. Individuals belonging to this age group had an acute systemic involvement of SARS-CoV-2 infection. Pediatric SARS and MIS-C were the most important factors associated with the mortality rate in pediatric chronic conditions with COVID-19.

ABSTRACT Objective: To analyse the anatomical variations of the median nerve motor branches in the elbow region. Methods: Twenty upper limbs of 10 adult male cadavers were prepared by intra-arterial injection of a solution of 10% glycerol and formaldehyde. All cadavers belonged to the institution anatomy laboratory. Results: We found a great variability within the distribution of median nerve branches leading to forearm muscles. Only three limbs (14%) presented the normal standard of innervation described in anatomy treatises. The pronator teres muscle (PTM), flexor carpi radialis (FCR), palmaris longus (PL), and the flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS) received exclusive innervation from the median nerve in all forearms. The anterior interosseous nerve (AIN) also originated from the median nerve in all dissected limbs. Conclusion: A thorough understanding of the anatomy of the median nerve branches is important for performing surgeries such as: approach to the proximal third of the forearm, alleviation of pronator teres and anterior interosseous nerve compression syndromes, and distal nerve transfers. It also enables a better understanding the recovery of muscle function after a nerve injury. Level of Evidence IV, Case series.

Abstract This paper aims to analyze how the adoption of technological innovations can affect the performance of activities related to the practices and procedures carried out by the organs of the criminal justice system. The qualitative exploratory methodology is adopted through the approach of the case study about the implementation of a technological tool by the Military Police of the State of Santa Catarina (PMSC) called PMSC Mobile. The results show that such a tool contributes positively to the rationalization of administrative procedures, better allocation of financial and human resources, and a better qualification of the registry of criminal information. However, the scarce legal regulations on the role of organs and public security and the lack of coordination between civilian and military police forces limit the deepening of integrative measures and the sharing of information on crime control. The study has two main contributions: (i) to describe an innovative practice in the area of public security and (ii) to broaden the debate about the effects of this tool on the activities carried out by other organs of the justice system and on the criminal procedure itself.

OBJECTIVES: We designed a cohort study to describe characteristics and outcomes of patients with coronavirus disease (COVID-19) admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) in the largest public hospital in Sao Paulo, Brazil, as Latin America becomes the epicenter of the pandemic. METHODS: This is the protocol for a study being conducted at an academic hospital in Brazil with 300 adult ICU beds dedicated to COVID-19 patients. We will include adult patients admitted to the ICU with suspected or confirmed COVID-19 during the study period. The main outcome is ICU survival at 28 days. Data will be collected prospectively and retrospectively by trained investigators from the hospital’s electronic medical records, using an electronic data capture tool. We will collect data on demographics, comorbidities, severity of disease, and laboratorial test results at admission. Information on the need for advanced life support and ventilator parameters will be collected during ICU stay. Patients will be followed up for 28 days in the ICU and 60 days in the hospital. We will plot Kaplan-Meier curves to estimate ICU and hospital survival and perform survival analysis using the Cox proportional hazards model to identify the main risk factors for mortality. ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT04378582. RESULTS: We expect to include a large sample of patients with COVID-19 admitted to the ICU and to be able to provide data on admission characteristics, use of advanced life support, ICU survival at 28 days, and hospital survival at 60 days. CONCLUSIONS: This study will provide epidemiological data about critically ill patients with COVID-19 in Brazil, which could inform health policy and resource allocation in low- and middle-income countries.
