ABSTRACT This experimental research aims to produce rice husk bio-concretes (RBCs) with a matrix of ternary mixtures of cement, rice husk ash and fly ash. The first step consisted in an evaluation of the influence of a superplasticizer additive and a polyfunctional additive on the rheological behavior of cementitious pastes. The purpose of this step was to test different levels of additives in order to develop a paste that, after adding high volumetric fractions of rice husk, allows obtaining RBCs that have adequate workability for compaction by mechanical vibration. A grinding and chemical treatment process was carried out on the rice husk to improve its adhesion with the matrix. The experimental results show that the PF type additive showed better compatibility with the ternary combination at an optimal content of 0.3%. Thus, the RBCs produced were cohesive, without segregation, with spreading of 210 ± 30 mm. The dry specific mass and compressive strength of the RBCs were determined after 28 days of age. Based on the results obtained, the BCCs presented specific mass between 1000 and 1300 kg/m3 and compressive strength higher than 8.0 MPa, indicating the possibility of use in the production of lightweight and load bearing panels.

RESUMO Esta pesquisa experimental tem como objetivo produzir bioconcretos de casca de arroz (BCCs) com uma matriz de misturas ternárias de cimento, cinza da casca de arroz e cinza volante. A primeira etapa consistiu na avaliação da influência de um aditivo superplastificante e um aditivo polifuncional no comportamento reológico de pastas cimentícias. O objetivo dessa etapa foi testar diferentes teores dos aditivos a fim de desenvolver uma pasta fluida que, após a adição de altas frações volumétricas de casca de arroz (CA), permita obter BCCs leves que possuam trabalhabilidade adequada para adensamento por vibração mecânica. Realizou-se uma trituração e um tratamento químico da CA, no intuito de melhorar sua aderência com a matriz. Os resultados experimentais mostram que o aditivo do tipo PF apresentou melhor compatibilidade com a matriz a um teor de 0,3%. Assim, os BCCs produzidos apresentaram-se coesos e sem segregação, com espalhamento de 210 ± 30 mm. A massa específica seca e a resistência à compressão foram determinadas aos 28 dias de idade. Com os resultados obtidos, os BCCs apresentaram massa específica entre 1000 e 1300 kg/m3 e resistência à compressão superiores a 8,0 MPa, indicando a possibilidade de utilização na produção de painéis leves e autoportantes.

resumo: A Economia Circular (EC) está progressivamente atraindo o interesse dos stakeholders do setor de construção para apoiar o desenvolvimento de produtos com maior quantidade de materiais recuperados, a fim de diminuir as emissões de Gases de Efeito Estufa (GEE). O concreto é um dos materiais mais utilizados no mundo e pode ser produzido utilizando resíduos como matéria-prima, incluindo fontes de base biológica, tanto de atividades agrícolas quanto florestais. Esta pesquisa tem como objetivo avaliar as emissões de GEE no ciclo de vida de Bioconcretos de Casca de Arroz (BCA) inovadores em que a Casca de Arroz (CA) e as Cinzas de Casca de Arroz (CCA) são empregadas como soluções circulares. Foram avaliados quatro BCA, considerando a substituição de cimento Portland comum por 8% de CCA e diferentes teores de substituição de areia por CA (0; 5 e 10%). Foi utilizada a metodologia da Avaliação do Ciclo de Vida (ACV), com escopo do berço ao portão, utilizando o método GWPbio, que contempla a influência do carbono biogênico na redução das emissões. Diferentes cenários de transporte foram avaliados considerando a produção do BCA em diferentes regiões brasileiras. Dois indicadores de desempenho de carbono dos BCA também são avaliados em termos de resistência à compressão e de valores de condutividade térmica. Como principal conclusão, a substituição do cimento por CCA e da areia por CA são estratégias promissoras para a produção de bioconcretos para aplicações específicas para reduzir suas emissões de GEE. No entanto, esse benefício varia de acordo com a disponibilidade de CA, eficiência de transporte e vida útil do BCA. O BCA pode ser considerado uma alternativa potencial para a indústria de concreto, para aplicações específicas, para reduzir as emissões de GEE e pode ser desenvolvido onde o resíduo de arroz é uma fonte disponível. Este estudo contribui ao apresentar um novo material e uma metodologia para a avaliação das emissões de GEE do ciclo de vida dos bioconcretos, que podem promover um setor de construção circular.

abstract: Circular Economy (CE) is progressively attracting interest from construction sector stakeholders to support the development of products with higher amounts of recovered materials in order to decrease greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Concrete is one of the most used materials in the world and can be produced using waste as raw materials, including, bio-based sources, from both agricultural and forest activities. This research aims to assess the GHG emissions in the life cycle of innovative rice husk bio-concretes (RBC) in which rice husk (RH) and rice husk ash (RHA) are used as circular solutions. Four RBC, considering ordinary Portland cement replacement by 8% of RHA and, different contents of sand substitution by RH (0; 5 and 10%), were assessed. The Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology was used, with a cradle-to-gate scope, using the GWPbio method, that contemplate the influence of biogenic carbon on the emissions reduction. Different transportation scenarios were evaluated considering the RBC production in different Brazilian regions. The service life of RBC in terms of carbon stock was also evaluated. Two carbon-performance indicators are also evaluated in terms of RBC compressive strength and thermal conductivity values. As the main conclusion, cement replacement by RHA alongside with sand replacement by RH are promising strategies to produce bio-concretes for specific applications, such as panels, partitions and façade elements, and to reduce its GHG emissions. However, this benefit varies according to RH availability, transport efficiency and RBC service life. The RBC can be considered a potential alternative for concrete industry, for specific applications, to reduce GHG emissions and can be developed where rice waste is an available source. This study contributes by presenting a new material and a methodology for the evaluation of life cycle GHG emissions of bio-concretes, which can help to promote a circular construction sector.

RESUMO O elevado consumo de produtos industrializados e o seu rápido descarte produzem grandes quantidades de resíduos sólidos, dos quais, os principais constituintes são os materiais poliméricos. Dentre estes, as borrachas de butadieno estireno merecem destaque. Esse material é usado em diversos setores, entre eles, o alimentício, para produção de chicles. A reciclagem desses materiais deve ser sempre pesquisada, buscando, principalmente, novas aplicações. Assim, este trabalho usou a borracha residual (BP) como matriz para cristais de quartzo. Os materiais preparados foram estudados por diversas técnicas, como, por exemplo, a Análise Termogravimétrica (TGA) e a Espectroscopia no Infravermelho por Transformada de Fourier (FTIR). Além disso, os materiais tiveram suas propriedades elétricas medidas. Foram feitas medidas de capacitância, campo elétrico, resistividade e densidade de corrente. Entre os materiais testados, o compósito carregado com 44,4% de quartzo apresentou a resposta mais linear e mais intensa de variação de carga elétrica em função da pressão aplicada. Portanto, os resultados mostraram que foram obtidos materiais com potencial aplicação no campo de sensores capacitivos de pressão.

ABSTRACT The high consumption of industrialized products and their disposal produce large quantities of solid waste, of which the principal constituents are polymeric materials. Among these, the butadiene-styrene rubbers deserve special mention. This material is used in various industries, including food, for the production of chewing gum. Thus, the recycling of these materials must always be researched, mainly seeking new applications. Therefore, this work used residual rubber (BP) as a matrix for quartz crystals. The materials prepared were studied by several techniques, such as Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). Besides, the materials also had their electrical properties measured. Capacitance, electric field, resistivity and current density measurements were performed. Among the tested materials, the composite loaded with 44.4% of quartz presented the most linear and intense response of electric charge variation as a function of the applied pressure. Therefore, the obtained results allow proving that were accomplished materials with the potential of application in the field of capacitive pressure sensors.

Resumo O presente estudo teve como objetivo avaliar os potenciais impactos ambientais de diferentes traços de argamassas (chapisco e camada única) e combinações normalmente utilizadas nas edificações brasileiras. Foram avaliados dois tipos de processo executivo para o chapisco (convencional e rolado) e para a camada única (convencional e projetado). Foi utilizada a metodologia de Avaliação do Ciclo de Vida (ACV) com o escopo fabricação das matérias-primas, transporte, execução, destinação final das perdas e carbonatação do revestimento. O processo executivo, principalmente em termos de consumo de material, mostrou ser o fator mais importante para a mitigação dos impactos ambientais dos revestimentos argamassados. Foi verificado que é possível reduzir de 15% a 64% de impactos ambientais do revestimento somente pela escolha da técnica de execução. O estudo tem como principal contribuição a proposição de diretrizes ambientais, com base em uma análise quantitativa, para a especificação e a execução de revestimentos argamassados no Brasil.

Abstract This study aimed to evaluate the environmental impacts of different mortar mixtures (roughcast and rendering) and their combinations, commonly used in the Brazilian buildings. Two types of construction process were evaluated for the roughcast (conventional and rolled processes) and for the rendering (conventional and projected processes). We used the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology considering the scope with the following stages: raw materials manufacturing, transport to the site, construction, end-of-life of the wastes generated during the process and the coating carbonation. We verified that it is feasible to reduce from 15% to 64% of environmental impacts of the coating only by choosing the construction technique. The main contribution of this study is the proposition of environmental guidelines, based on a quantitative analysis, for the specification and construction of mortar coatings in Brazil.

resumo: O concreto com agregado reciclado é um material frágil sob tensões de tração, no entanto, assim como o concreto convencional, é possível que, mesmo após sua fissuração, a sua contribuição seja relevante no dimensionamento de elementos de concreto armado sob tração ou flexão. O objetivo deste trabalho é avaliar a aplicação dos modelos analíticos usados na previsão do efeito do enrijecimento a tração (tension stiffening) ao concreto armado reciclado. Ensaios de tirantes de concreto armado foram realizados utilizando concreto convencional e concreto contendo 25% e 50% de substituição do agregado natural por agregado reciclado. A partir dos resultados experimentais, a contribuição do concreto foi isolada e um estudo paramétrico foi realizado para identificar qual modelo analítico existente na literatura pode ser mais apropriado. Foram avaliados os modelos propostos por Carreira e Chu (1986), Vecchio e Collins (1986) e Hsu e Mo (2010). Uma análise numérica baseada no método dos elementos finitos foi implementada para modelar o comportamento mecânico do tirante de concreto armado utilizando os modelos analíticos já ajustados ao concreto com agregado reciclado. A distribuição de tensões no aço e no concreto e o modo de fissuração foram avaliados numericamente. Os resultados indicam que os parâmetros utilizados nos modelos analíticos para concreto convencional não conseguem prever o comportamento do concreto com agregado reciclado e precisam ser modificados para se obter uma resposta mais precisa.

abstract: Concrete with recycled aggregate is a fragile material under tensile stresses. However, like conventional concrete, it is possible that its contribution is relevant in the design of reinforced concrete elements under tension or bending, even after cracking. The objective of this work is to evaluate the application of the analytical models used to predict the effect of tension stiffening on recycled reinforced concrete. Tests of reinforced concrete under tensile were performed using conventional concrete and concrete containing 25% and 50% replacement of the natural aggregate with recycled aggregate. From the experimental results of reinforced concrete, the contribution of the concrete was isolated and a parametric study was carried out to identify which analytical model in the literature may be more appropriate. The models proposed by Carreira and Chu (1986), Vecchio and Collins (1986) and Hsu and Mo (2010) were evaluated. A numerical analysis, based on the finite element method, was implemented to model the mechanical behavior of the reinforced concrete under tensile using the analytical models already adjusted to concrete with recycled aggregate. The stress distribution in steel and concrete and the cracking mode were evaluated numerically. The results indicate that the parameters used in the analytical models for conventional concrete cannot predict the behavior of concrete with recycled aggregate and need to be modified to obtain a more accurate answer.

Resumo Neste trabalho dois microconcretos, com e sem metacaulinita, foram dosados para produção de compósitos laminados reforçados com fibras longas de sisal. Para garantir uma matriz livre de hidróxido de cálcio foi determinado o teor ideal de metacaolinita por análise termogravimétrica de pastas com teores de substituição de 20%, 30% e 40 nas idades de 4 h, 10 h, 24 h, 7 dias, 28 dias e 730 dias. Laminados com 30% de metacaolinita foram submetidos a ensaio de flexão após 28 dias de cura em água e após 12 e 25 ciclos de molhagem e secagem. A análise da microestrutura foi realizada a partir de microscopia eletrônica de varredura e espectroscopia de raios X por energia dispersiva (EDS). Os resultados demonstram que, no microconcreto contendo apenas cimento, o hidróxido de cálcio foi lixiviado da matriz e depositado na superfície da fibra, o que resultou em ruptura brusca devido ao enfraquecimento das fibras. Com a adição de metacaolinita, a matriz mostrou-se livre de hidróxido de cálcio, e o comportamento mecânico pós-fissuração não foi alterado pelo envelhecimento. No entanto, a variação de temperatura e umidade do ciclo molhagem-secagem induziu fissuração do microconcreto, o que negativamente afetou a resistência à formação da primeira fissura do compósito e seu modo de ruptura.

Abstract In this study, two microconcrete samples, with and without metakaolin, were designed for the production of laminated composites reinforced with long sisal fibres. In addition to the reference microconcrete, another microconcrete was produced by replacing cement by metakaolin.The ideal metacaolin content that would guarantee a free calcium hydroxide matrix was determined by thermogravimetric analysis of blends with 20%, 30% and 40% substitution contents at the ages of 4 h, 10 h, 24 h, 7 days, 28 days and 730 days. Laminates produced with cement substitution by 30% metakaolin were submitted to flexural test after 28 days of curing in water, and after 12 and 25 wetting and drying cycles. The analysis of the microstructure was performed by scanning electron microscopy and dispersive energy X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The results demonstrate that in the microconcrete containing only cement, the calcium hydroxide was leached from the matrix and deposited on the surface of the fibre. Thus, the aged composites showed a sudden rupture due to the weakening of the fibres. With the incorporation of metakaolin, the matrix showed to be free of calcium hydroxide, and the mechanical behaviour after cracking was not altered by aging. However, the temperature and humidity variation due the wet-drying cycle has induced cracking of the microconcrete, which detrimentally affected the strength at crack initiation of these composites and their rupture mode.

In the present work, geopolymer matrices were developed by alkali activation of metakaolin, using NaOH and sodium silicate as activators. The samples of metakaolin and matrices were studied by thermal analysis (TGA/DTA) at temperatures between 22°C and 1000°C in a nitrogen atmosphere with a heating rate of 10°C/min. The analyses showed gradual mass losses for MK1 and MK2, occurring in the temperature range of 350-700°C, associated with the dehydroxylation of the kaolinite present in the metakaolin samples, when transforming into reactive metakaolin. Thermal analysis allowed to identify mass losses associated with the different events that occurred during the formation of the geopolymer structure. The formation of amorphous geopolymer networks was confirmed by the XRD and FTIR techniques. The quantitative analysis of XRD results by using the Rietveld method allowed determine the amorphous and crystalline content of the precursors and geopolymers. The results obtained, after analyzing the matrices, showed that the geopolymers obtained presented a mechanical performance comparable to systems found in the literature, with uniaxial compressive strengths ranging from 38-50 MPa and stiffness around 7 GPa. Hence, these systems are suitable for their future use as alternative binder materials for the production of mortars and concretes.

Abstract The main objective of this work is to present the technical viability of Self Compacting Concretes (SCC) containing by-products from crushed coarse aggregate production. For this purpose, a vast characterization of these by-products was made; six mixtures of SCC were produced using two different aggregates: granite and mica schist. The binder/dry aggregate (b/agg) ratio by mass was 1:3. The following properties were analyzed: compressive strength, direct tensile strength, flexural tensile strength and splitting tensile strength. Granite presented the best mechanical performance. The replacement of natural sand by granite sand generated concretes with the same level of compressive strength and caused an increase in tensile strength values. The incorporation of silica fume into concrete with granite produced an increase of 17% in compressive strength. So, the use of these by-product materials can provide a technically feasible solution that is also consistent with the aims of sustainable development and preservation of the environment.

ResumoCinza de biomassa é um resíduo sólido gerado em grande quantidade em caldeiras para produção de energia e calor. Na indústria de processamento de cacau, que usa casca de amêndoa de cacau (20%) e madeira de eucalipto (80%) como combustível, são geradas cinzas volantes e cinzas de fundo, cujas propriedades são pouco conhecidas, o que limita sua correta disposição ou aplicação. Neste trabalho, cinza fornalha (fundo) e ciclone (volante) foram coletadas, durante o processo de limpeza da caldeira, e caracterizadas quanto a composição química, morfologia (MEV), granulometria e mineralogia (DR-X) com o objetivo de avaliar a potencialidade das cinzas para uso como adição mineral. As cinzas foram beneficiadas com moagem e queima controlada a 500, 700 e 900º C. Para avaliação do efeito da cinza, foram moldadas quatro argamassas com 5% de substituição de cimento por cinza ciclone e cinza fornalha, in natura e moídas. Os resultados dos testes de absorção de água e resistência mecânica (compressão e tração na flexão) demonstraram um aumento da absorção e da porosidade para todas as misturas, mas a manutenção das propriedades mecânicas para mistura com cinza ciclone moída, quando comparada com a argamassa sem adição, demonstrando a potencialidade desta cinza como adição mineral.

AbstractBiomass ash is a solid waste generated in large quantities in stand-alone boilers for the generation of power and heat. The cocoa industry, which uses cocoa almond bark (20%) and eucalyptus wood (80%) as fuel, generates fly and bottom ash. The fact that the properties of the ash are little known limits its correct provision and application. In this paper, bottom ash ("fornalha") and fly ash ("ciclone") were collected during the boiler cleaning process, and characterized by their chemical composition, morphology (SEM), particle size and mineralogy (DR-X) in order to assess the potential use of the ash as mineral addition. The ash was treated by grinding and controlled burning at 500, 700 and 900o C. To evaluate the effect of ash, four mortars were cast with 5% cement with fly ash and bottom ash replacement, in natura and ground. The results of water absorption and mechanical strength (compression and tension in flexion) tests showed increased absorption and porosity in all mixtures, but unchanged mechanical properties for mortar with ground fly ash, compared with mortar without addition. This demonstrates that this kind of ash has potential as mineral addition.

This work presents a study, which compares the early stages of hydration of a High Initial Strength and Sulphate Resistant Portland Cement (HIS SR PC) with those of Type II F Portland Cement (PC II), by Non-Conventional Differential Thermal Analysis (NCDTA) within the first 24 hours of hydration. Water/cement (w/c) ratios equal to 0.5, 0.6 and 0.66 were used to prepare the pastes. The hydration of these two types of cement was monitored on real time by NCDTA curves, through the thermal effects of the hydration reactions, from which cumulative evolved energy curves were obtained. These techniques allow one to analyse the influence of each type of cement on the main stages that occur during the hydration process. Thermogravimetric analysis were also performed at 4 and 24h of hydration for both cements, to analyse the influence of each kind of cement on the amount of the main formed hydrated products. The results showed that with 4h of hydration, the total combined water amount released from the hydrated products was higher for the PC II pastes than for the HIS SR PC pastes. Otherwise, with 24h of hydration, the amount of the total combined water released from the hydrated products was higher for the HIS SR PC pastes than for the PC II pastes.

Os diferentes tratamentos dados aos agregados reciclados influenciam nas propriedades das argamassas nos estados fresco e endurecido. Como esses agregados possuem características diferentes das dos agregados naturais, tais como elevada absorção, forma lamelar, textura áspera e menor massa específica, há necessidade de estudar os diferentes procedimentos empregados na dosagem de misturas contendo esses resíduos e a influência deles no comportamento físico e mecânico das argamassas. Dois procedimentos foram utilizados no presente estudo: compensação de parte da água absorvida pelos agregados miúdos reciclados (AMR), fazendo-se sua pré-saturação, e uso dos agregados secos em estufa. Este trabalho tem como objetivo principal avaliar a influência desses procedimentos de dosagem nas propriedades reológicas, teor de água quimicamente combinada e resistência à compressão de argamassas contendo 25% e 50% de agregados reciclados em substituição (em massa) aos agregados naturais. Os resultados mostram que a pré-saturação influencia as propriedades das argamassas no estado fresco e endurecido. A presença do AMR promove misturas com maior viscosidade, maior teor de água livre e menor resistência à compressão.

The different treatments given to recycled aggregates influence the properties of mortars in fresh and hardened states. As these aggregates have characteristics different from those of natural aggregates, such as high absorption, lamellar form, rough texture and lower density, there is a need to study the different procedures used in the dosage of mixtures containing these residues and their influence on the physical and mechanical behavior of mortars. Two procedures were used in this study: partial compensation of the water absorbed by the recycled fine aggregates (RFA) through their pre-saturation and use of aggregates dried in an oven. The main aim of this study is to evaluate the influence of these dosage procedures on the viscosity, chemically combined water content and compressive strength of mortars containing 25% and 50% of recycled aggregates replacing (by mass) natural aggregates. The results showed that the pre-saturation procedure influences the properties of the mortars in the fresh and hardened states. The presence of the RFA promotes mixtures with higher viscosity, higher content of free water and less resistance to compression.

O uso simultâneo de diferentes tipos de fibras como reforço em concretos, pastas ou argamassas, está diretamente associado ao combate da propagação de fissuras em diferentes estágios do seu comportamento carga-deflexão ou tensão-deformação. O objetivo do presente artigo é avaliar o comportamento à flexão, no nível material e estrutural, de concretos autoadensáveis reforçados com meso e macrofibras de aço. Dois ensaios foram utilizados, visando a caracterizar, mecanicamente, os concretos reforçados com frações volumétricas de 1 e 1,5% de fibras híbridas de aço: resistência à flexão em quatro pontos (nível material) e resistência à flexão em painéis circulares de concreto (nível estrutural). Os resultados obtidos indicaram que a hibridização do reforço fibroso elevou o estado-limite de utilização dos concretos, contribuindo para o aumento da tenacidade e da capacidade de carga para pequenos níveis de deslocamento e aberturas de fissura. Tais benefícios se mostraram mais evidentes nos ensaios estruturais, tendo em vista o grau de hiperestaticidade e o potencial de múltipla fissuração dos painéis. No ramo descendente das curvas carga-deslocamento, quando macrofissuras eram predominantes, as macrofibras mostraram-se mais eficientes, aumentando a capacidade global de absorção de energia dos compósitos.

The simultaneous use of different types of fibers as reinforcement in concrete, mortar or pastes, can avoid the propagation and widening of cracks at different stages of their load-deflection or stress-strain behavior. The purpose of this article is to evaluate the flexural behavior in the material and structural scale of self-compacting concretes reinforced with meso and macro steel fibers. Two tests were used to mechanically characterize the concretes reinforced with volume fractions of 1 and 1.5% hybrid steel fibers: four point bending tests (material scale) and round panel tests (structural scale). The results indicated that hybridization of fiber reinforcement raised the serviceability limit state of concrete, contributing to increased toughness and load bearing capacity for small levels of displacement and crack openings. Such benefits were more evident in the structural tests considering the degree of hyperstaticity and multiple cracking potential of the panels. In the descending branch of the load-displacement curves, where macro-cracks were predominant, macro-fibers were more efficient in increasing the overall capacity for energy absorption of the composites.

This paper addresses the results of an investigation on the influence of the Brazilian raw materials on the mechanical performance of Strain Hardening Cementitious Composites (SHCC). The mixtures were produced with variations of fly ash/cement and sand/cement proportions and with different maximum sand particle. Mechanical properties were evaluated by direct tension, bending and compression tests. Crack formation under direct tension and bending loads was also investigated. The results indicate that the use of high quantities of fly ash with low quantities of fine sand is the ideal combination to obtain strain hardening composites with tensile strain capacity superior to 3% using local materials. The increase in the sand content and particle size affects the behavior of the composites and tended to reduce the strain capacity of the specimens by up to 30%. Keeping constant the fly ash/cement and sand/cement rates it was found that the crack density and width measured under direct tension are only affected by the diameter of the sand for tensile strains in the range of 2%. The same general trends were observed for specimens submitted to compressive and bending loads.

This work presents the results of a study on the hydration of pastes containing calcium hydroxide and either rice husk ash (RHA) or sugar cane bagasse ash (SCBA) in various initial CaO/SiO2 molar ratios. The products of the reactions were characterized by thermal analyses X-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy. In the case of the RHA pastes, the product was composed of CaO-SiO2-H2O (type I C-S-H) or CaO-SiO2-H2O (type II C-S-H) according to the CaO/SiO2 ratio of the mixture. In contrast, in the case of the SBCA pastes, the product was composed primarily of CaO-SiO2-H2O that differed from both the previous types; the product also contained inclusions of calcium aluminate hydrates.
