Abstract: The Isthmus of Tehuantepec is the narrowest landmass between the Gulf of Mexico and the Pacific Ocean. It is known as an important stopover site and migration corridor for Nearctic-Neotropical migratory birds. We characterized nocturnal bird migration along the Pacific side of the isthmus with marine radar, and identified species with diurnal point counts during 5 fall seasons (2009–2013) at operational and proposed wind farms. We found significant differences in migratory traffic rates, flight directions, and flight altitudes among years and sites, but we also found patterns of similarity including flight directions heading to the southeast each season; migratory traffic rates peaking 3–4 h after sunset and decreasing thereafter; flight altitudes increasing throughout the night; seasonal mean flight altitudes fluctuating between ~520 and ~720 m above ground level (m agl); and <7% of detected targets flying below 100 m agl. Our data suggest that migratory activity initiates around mid-September and peaks in mid-October. We identified 58 bird species of nocturnal migrants. Studies of nocturnal bird migration are important for understanding potential impacts from wind farms.

Resumen: El istmo de Tehuantepec es la masa continental más estrecha entre el golfo de México y el océano Pacífico. Es conocido como sitio de descanso y corredor migratorio importante para aves migratorias neárticas-neotropicales. Nosotros caracterizamos la migración nocturna de aves en la vertiente del Pacífico del istmo utilizando un radar marino e identificamos especies utilizando puntos de conteo diurnos, durante 5 temporadas migratorias de otoño (2009-2013) desde distintos parques eólicos en operación y propuestos. Encontramos diferencias significativas en la tasa de flujo migratorio, direcciones y alturas de vuelo entre años y sitios, pero también encontramos patrones de similitud incluyendo direcciones de vuelo hacia el sureste cada temporada; tasas de flujo migratorio teniendo un pico 3-4 h después de la puesta del sol y disminuyendo después; alturas de vuelo incrementando a lo largo de la noche; alturas de vuelo promedio en cada temporada fluctuando entre ~520 y ~720 m sobre el nivel del suelo, y < 7% de los blancos detectados volando por debajo de 100 m sobre el nivel del suelo. Nuestros datos sugieren que la actividad migratoria se inicia a mediados de septiembre y tiene un pico a mediados de octubre. Identificamos 58 especies de aves que tienen hábitos migratorios nocturnos. Los estudios sobre migración nocturna de aves son importantes para entender posibles impactos de parques eólicos.

OBJECTIVE: To determine risk factors for poor birth outcome and their population attributable fractions. METHODS: 1688 women who attended for antenatal care were recruited into a prospective study of the effectiveness of syphilis screening and treatment. All women were screened and treated for syphilis and other reproductive tract infections (RTIs) during pregnancy and followed to delivery to measure the incidence of stillbirth, intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR), low birth weight (LBW) and preterm live birth. FINDINGS: At delivery, 2.7% of 1536 women experienced a stillbirth, 12% of live births were preterm and 8% were LBW. Stillbirth was independently associated with a past history of stillbirth, short maternal stature and anaemia. LBW was associated with short maternal stature, ethnicity, occupation, gravidity and maternal malaria whereas preterm birth was associated with occupation, age of sexual debut, untreated bacterial vaginosis and maternal malaria. IUGR was associated with gravidity, maternal malaria, short stature, and delivering a female infant. In the women who had been screened and treated for syphilis, in between 20 and 34% of women with each outcome was estimated to be attributable to malaria, and 63% of stillbirths were estimated as being attributable to maternal anaemia. Screening and treatment of RTIs was effective and no association was seen between treated RTIs and adverse pregnancy outcomes. CONCLUSION: Maternal malaria and anaemia continue to be significant causes of adverse pregnancy outcome in sub-Saharan Africa. Providing reproductive health services that include treatment of RTIs and prevention of malaria and maternal anaemia to reduce adverse birth outcomes remains a priority.

OBJETIVO: Identificar los factores de riesgo de desenlace adverso del parto y sus fracciones poblacionales atribuibles. MÉTODOS: En un estudio prospectivo sobre la eficacia de la detección y tratamiento de la sífilis se incluyeron 1688 mujeres que esperaban recibir atención prenatal. Todas ellas fueron sometidas a pruebas de detección y tratamiento de la sífilis y de otras infecciones del aparato reproductor durante el embarazo, y fueron observadas hasta el parto para determinar la incidencia de muerte fetal, retraso del crecimiento intrauterino, bajo peso al nacer y parto antes del término. RESULTADOS: Entre las 1536 mujeres observadas hasta el parto hubo un 2,7% de muertes fetales, un 12% de nacidos vivos antes del término y un 8% de recién nacidos con bajo peso al nacer. La muerte fetal se asoció de forma independiente a los antecedentes de muerte fetal y a la anemia y la baja estatura de la madre. El bajo peso al nacer se asoció a la baja estatura de la madre, su etnia y ocupación, el número de embarazos anteriores y los antecedentes de paludismo, mientras que el parto antes del término se asoció con la ocupación, la edad de inicio de las relaciones sexuales, la vaginosis bacteriana no tratada y los antecedentes de paludismo. El retraso del crecimiento intrauterino se asoció con el número de embarazos anteriores, el paludismo, la baja estatura de la madre y el sexo femenino del recién nacido. En estas mujeres sometidas a pruebas de detección y tratamiento de la sífilis, entre un 20 y un 34% de cada uno de los desenlaces adversos fueron atribuibles al paludismo, mientras que el 63% de las muertes fetales fueron atribuibles a la anemia materna. La detección y tratamiento de las infecciones del aparato reproductor fue eficaz y no se observó ninguna asociación entre las infecciones tratadas y los desenlaces adversos del embarazo. CONCLUSIÓN: El paludismo y la anemia materna siguen siendo causas importantes de desenlace adverso del embarazo en el África subsahariana. La prestación de servicios de salud reproductiva que incluyan el tratamiento de las infecciones del aparato reproductor y la prevención de la malaria y la anemia materna siguen siendo prioritarias para reducir los desenlaces adversos del embarazo.

OBJECTIF: Déterminer les facteurs de risque pour diverses issues défavorables de l'accouchement et les fractions attribuables en population de ces issues. MÉTHODES: 1688 femmes bénéficiant de soins anténataux ont été incluses dans une étude prospective visant à évaluer l'efficacité du dépistage de la syphilis et de son traitement. Pendant leur grossesse, ces femmes ont toutes été soumises à un dépistage de la syphilis et ont éventuellement été traitées contre cette maladie ou d'autres infections de l'appareil reproducteur. Elles ont également fait l'objet d'un suivi jusqu'à l'accouchement, en vue de mesurer l'incidence des mortinaissances, des retards de développement intra-utérins, des faibles poids à la naissance et des naissances avant terme. RÉSULTATS: Parmi les 1536 accouchements, 2,7 % ont donné un enfant mort-né, 12 % un enfant prématuré vivant et 8 % un enfant de faible poids à la naissance. La mortinaissance était associée de manière indépendante aux facteurs suivants : antécédents d'accouchement d'un enfant mort-né, et faible stature ou anémie maternelles. Le faible poids à la naissance pouvait être associé à une petite stature de la mère, à son origine ethnique, à sa profession, au nombre de grossesses et à la présence du paludisme chez la mère, tandis que la naissance avant terme pouvait être mise en relation avec la profession, l'âge au début de l'activité sexuelle et la présence d'une vaginite bactérienne non traitée ou d'un paludisme chez la mère. Le retard de croissance intra-utérin pouvait être corrélé avec le nombre de grossesses, la présence d'un paludisme chez la mère, une faible stature maternelle et la mise au monde d'une fille. Parmi les femmes chez lesquelles on avait détecté et traité une syphilis, 20 à 24 % des issues défavorables de l'accouchement ont été considérées comme imputables au paludisme et 63 % des mortinaissances à une anémie maternelle. Le dépistage et le traitement des infections de l'appareil reproducteur se sont révélés efficaces et aucune association n'a été relevée entre ces infections et des issues défavorables de la grossesse. CONCLUSION: Le paludisme et l'anémie maternels restent des causes importantes d'issues défavorables de la grossesse en Afrique subsaharienne. L'apport de services de santé génésique comprenant le traitement des infections de l'appareil reproducteur et la prévention du paludisme et de l'anémie chez la mère demeure une priorité pour réduire les issues défavorables de l'accouchement.

We have been able to label the excretory system of cercariae and all forms of schistosomula, immature and adult worms with the highly fluorescent dye resorufin. We have shown that the accumulation of the resorufin into the excretory tubules and collecting ducts of the male adult worm depends on the presence of extracellular calcium and phosphate ions. In the adult male worms, praziquantel (PZQ) prevents this accumulation in RPMI medium and disperses resorufin from tubules which have been prelabelled. Female worms and all other developmental stages are much less affected either by the presence of calcium and phosphate ions, or the disruption caused by PZQ. The male can inhibit the excretory system in paired female. Fluorescent PZQ localises in the posterior gut (intestine) region of the male adult worm, but not in the excretory system, except for the anionic carboxy fluorescein derivative of PZQ, which may be excreted by this route. All stages of the parasite can recover from damage by PZQ treatment in vitro. The excretory system is highly sensitive to damage to the surface membrane and may be involved in vesicle movement and damage repair processes. In vivo the adult parasite does not recover from PZQ treatment, but what is inhibiting recovery is unknown, but likely to be related to immune effector molecules.

DMT1 _ Divalent Metal (Ion) Transporter 1 or SLC11A2/DCT1/Nramp2 _ transports Fe2+ into the duodenum and out of the endosome during the transferrin cycle. DMT1 also is important in non-transferrin bound iron uptake. It plays similar roles in Mn2+ trafficking. Voltage clamping showed that six other metals evoked currents, but it is unclear if these metals are substrates for DMT1. This report summarizes progress on which metals DMT1 transports, focusing on results from the authors' labs. We recently cloned 1A/+IRE and 2/-IRE DMT1 isoforms to generate HEK293 cell lines that express them in a tetracycline-inducible fashion, then compared induced expression to uninduced expression and to endogenous DMT1 expression. Induced expression increases ~50x over endogenous expression and ~10x over uninduced levels. Fe2+, Mn2+, Ni2+ and Cu1+ or Cu2+ are transported. We also explored competition between metal ions using this system because incorporation essentially represents DMT1 transport and find this order for transport affinity: Mn>?Cd>?Fe>Pb~Co~Ni>Zn. The effects of decreased DMT1 also could be examined. The Belgrade rat has diminished DMT1 function and thus provides ways of testing. A series of DNA constructs that generate siRNAs specific for DMT1 or certain DMT1 isoforms yield another way to test DMT1-based transport.

Plant species richness and composition was studied on three rock outcrops (lajas) in a tropical dry forest in Lomerio, Bolivia. The variation in vegetation was determined from the center to the periphery of the influence of the rock outcrops and plant species indicators of rock outcrop habitats were identified. Species richness varied among lajas, but was higher in rock outcrop habitats compared to adjoining forests. Species richness was highest on the periphery of the rock outcrops compared to the vegetated islands on the center of the outcrop. The highest species richness was encountered 10 m from the vegetated border on the periphery of the pure rock surface. Deuterocohnia meziana Kuntze ex Mez was the most dominant (highest ground cover) plant species colonizing the center of the rock outcrops, while D. meziana and Monvillea kroenleinii R. Kiesling were the most abundant. On the periphery of the laja Anthurium plowmanii Croat, Pseudananas sagenarius (Arruda) Camargo, Urera baccifera L., Casearia gossypiosperma Briq., Aspidosperma rigidum Rusby and Cereus tacuaralensis Cárdenas were the most dominant species. Regeneration appears to be occurring for the principal tree species. Lajas are key habitats that should be considered in the natural management of forests in which they are imbedded. They constitute areas of high biodiversity and endemic species and are refuges and feeding areas for many animal species.

Estudiamos la riqueza y composición de especies vegetales en tres afloramientos rocosos (lajas) en Lomerío, Santa Cruz, Bolivia, dentro de un bosque seco tropical. Determinamos la variación de la vegetación desde el centro hacia el borde de las lajas, además que caracterizamos algunas especies propias de este hábitat. La riqueza de especies varía entre lajas, pero, en forma conjunta esta riqueza puede ser mayor a otros tipos de bosque aledaños a las lajas. La riqueza de especies fue mayor en el borde que en el centro de las lajas. En el borde de las lajas, la riqueza de especies varia según la distancia al centro de las lajas; la mayor riqueza se encontró en los primeros 10 m del borde. En el centro de las lajas Deuterocohnia meziana Kuntze ex Mez fue la especie más dominante, mientras que las especies más abundantes fueron D. meziana y Monvillea kroenleinii R. Kiesling. En el borde de las lajas Anthurium plowmanii Croat, Pseudananas sagenarius (Arruda) Camargo, Urera baccifera L., Casearia gossypiosperma Briq., Aspidosperma rigidum Rusby y Cereus tacuaralensis Cárdenas fueron las especies más abundantes. De acuerdo a las clases diamétricas, se puede considerar que existe regeneración natural para las principales especies arbóreas. Las lajas son hábitats muy importantes que deben considerarse dentro del manejo forestal de bosques naturales adyacentes, puesto que constituyen lugares de alta diversidad y endemismo de plantas y animales y que son refugios y fuentes de alimentación de muchas especies de animales.
