O artigo examina temas, métodos e tendências analíticas dominantes na análise da história social e da ciência social produzidas na Inglaterra e nos Estados Unidos a partir da Segunda Guerra Mundial, apontando a proeminência no debate de duas grandes vertentes, o marxismo e a teoria da modernização. O autor reflete sobre achados e limites de ambas as correntes.

This article examines the mainstream themes, methods and analytical trends in social history and social science from Britain and the United States since the Second World War. It highlights the predominance of two main theories in the debate: Marxism and modernization theory. The author evaluates the main findings and limits of both theories.

Diferentes formas de confronto político, como movimentos sociais, revoluções, mobilizações étnicas e ciclos de protesto compartilham algumas propriedades causais, mas tais similaridades foram obscurecidas pela fragmentação disciplinar. Trabalhos recentes e esta nova revista - Mobilization - oferecem oportunidades para comparação e síntese. Uma rede de pesquisadores vem realizando uma ampla pesquisa sobre confronto político e espera produzir um mapa inteligível do campo, uma síntese das pesquisas recentes, uma especificação das "condições de ocorrência" dos fenômenos para a validação das teorias disponíveis e uma investigação sobre as mudanças nas características do confronto em todo o mundo. Discussões sobre 1) movimentos sociais, ciclos e revoluções; 2) identidades coletivas e redes sociais; 3) movimentos sociais e política institucional e 4) globalização e confronto transacional ilustram a promessa e os perigos do empreendimento

Different forms of contentious politics such as social movements, revolutions, ethnic mobilizations, and cycles of protest share a number of causal properties, but disciplinary fragmentation has obscured their similarities. Recent works and this new journal - Mobilization - provide opportunities for comparison and synthesis. A network of researchers is undertaking a broad survey of contentious politics in hopes of producing an intelligible map of the field, a synthesis of recent inquiries, a specification of scope conditions for the validity of available theories, and an exploration of worldwide changes in the character of contention. Discussions of 1) social movements, cycles and revolutions; 2) collective identities and social networks; 3) social movements and institutional politics; and 4) globalization and transnational contention illustrate the promise and perils of the enterprise.

Aqui são tratadas algumas questões relativas ao acesso desigual ao conhecimento científico que afeta o bem-estar humano: controle sobre sua produção e distribuição e acesso a esse conhecimento por pessoas cujo bem-estar será ou poderá ser afetado por ele. Certamente não fornecerei respostas convincentes e abrangentes às questões, mas pretendo mostrar por que e como elas são importantes. O acesso ao conhecimento científico envolve os temas da ação, da identidade e da liberdade em três aspectos distintos. Em primeiro lugar, a produção e a distribuição de conhecimento científico dependem de agentes informados que, de forma quase inevitável, reservam o conhecimento para vantagem própria e de seus financiadores. Em segundo lugar, o controle sobre o conhecimento científico se organiza em torno de fronteiras definidoras de identidade, que dividem, de um lado, os que têm direitos a esse conhecimento e, de outro, os que carecem de tais direitos. Em terceiro lugar, a superação das barreiras entre os beneficiários e as vítimas do acesso desigual exige, normalmente, a ação heróica de advogados e autoridades políticas.

The author raises questions about unequal access to scientific knowledge whose consequences affect human well being: control over production of that knowledge, control over its distribution, and access to that knowledge by people whose well being it will or could affect. I will try to show how and why they matter. the problem of access to scientific knowledge involves agency, identity, and freedom. It involves those themes in three different ways. First, the production and distribution of scientific knowledge depends on knowledgeable agents who almost inevitably hoard their knowledge to the differential advantage of themselves and their sponsors. Second, control over scientific knowledge organizes around identity-defining boundaries between those who have rights to that knowledge and those who lack such rights. Third, overcoming the barriers between beneficiaries and victims of unequal access ordinarily requires heroic agency on the part of advocates and political authorities.

Abstract This article attempts to interpret the changes in containment and democratization in Europe since 1650. It investigates the different trajectories of contentious policy, recognizing that by looking into this process, it is explaining a strange, contingent result: democracy.

Resumen Por medio del presente artículo se intenta interpretar los cambios en la contención y la democratización en Europa desde 1650. Se trata de un trabajo que investiga acerca de las diferentes trayectorias que la política contenciosa ha seguido, reconociendo que al indagar en este proceso se está explicando un resultado raro y contingente: la democracia.
