Abstract The objective of this study was to evaluate reproductive traits in adults of Astyanax lacustris subjected to different spawning inducers. The study involved 240 females (12.54 g ± 2.33 and 7.66 cm ± 0.63 cm) and 240 males (5.83 g ± 0.39 g and 6.14 cm ± 0.64 cm), all at reproductive age. Three different inducers were evaluated: (i) 0.4 pellets of Ovopel®/kg of body weight; (ii) 0.5 ml of buserelin acetate/kg of body weight; and (iii) carp pituitary extract (CPE) (5.5 mg CPE/kg body weight for females and 2.5 mg CPE/kg body weight for males), as well as saline solution (without hormone). The degree-hours for spawning were greater (P<0.05) for the Ovopel® treatment (with 204.93) than in the treatment with CPE (183.2). Ovary weight and gonadosomatic index were higher (P<0.05) in CPE and Ovopel® treatments when compared to buserelin acetate. The number of oocytes per female, absolute and relative fecundity were greater (P<0.05) for Ovopel® and CPE treatments. Fertilization rate was higher (P<0.05) in treatment with buserelin acetate (82.3%) in relation to Ovopel® (72.33%) and CPE (62.40%) treatments, and the highest (P<0.05) hatching rates were achieved with buserelin acetate and Ovopel®. The number of larvae per female body weight was greater (P<0.05) when Ovopel® was used. In conclusion, Ovopel® proves to be a more effective reproductive inducer for induced reproduction of A. lacustris when compared to CPE and buserelin acetate.

Resumo O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar as características reprodutivas em adultos de Astyanax lacustris submetidos a diferentes indutores da desova. Foram utilizadas 240 fêmeas (12,54 g ± 2,33 e 7,66 cm ± 0,63 cm) e 240 machos (5,83 g ± 0,39 g e 6,14 cm ± 0,64 cm), todos em idade reprodutiva. Três diferentes indutores foram avaliados: (i) 0,4 pellets de Ovopel®/kg de peso corporal; (ii) 0,5 ml de acetato de buserelina/kg de peso corporal; e (iii) Extrato de Pituitária de Carpa (CPE) (5,5 mg CPE/kg de peso corporal para fêmeas e 2,5 mg de CPE/kg de peso corporal para machos) e solução salina (sem hormônio). Horas-grau para desova foi maior (P<0,05) no tratamento com Ovopel® (204,93) do que no tratamento com CPE (183,2). O peso das gônadas e o índice gonadossomático foram maiores (P<0,05) nos tratamentos com CPE e Ovopel® quando comparados ao acetato de buserelina. O número de oócitos por fêmea, a fecundidade absoluta e relativa foram maiores (P<0,05) para os tratamentos com Ovopel® e CPE. A taxa de fertilização foi maior (P<0,05) no tratamento com acetato de buserelina (82,3%) em relação aos tratamentos com Ovopel® (72,33%) e CPE (62,40%); e maior (P<0,05) taxa de eclosão foi obtida nos tratamentos com acetato de buserelina e Ovopel®. O número de larvas por peso corporal da fêmea foi maior (P<0,05) quando utilizado Ovopel®. Conclui-se que Ovopel® é um indutor reprodutivo mais eficaz para a reprodução induzida de A. lacustris quando comparado ao CPE e ao acetato de buserelina.

Resumo A alocação de recursos para reprodução pode mudar dependendo do tamanho, conforme previsto pela alocação sexual dependente do tamanho. Essa teoria é baseada no fato de que indivíduos pequenos investirão na alocação sexual com menor custo de produção, geralmente do sexo masculino. Nas plantas, existem algumas espécies andromonoicas, presença de hermafrodita e flores masculinas no mesmo indivíduo. A andromonoicia fornece uma estratégia para alocar recursos de maneira ideal às funções masculina e feminina, desenvolvendo uma estratégia reprodutiva de economia de energia. Assim, nosso objetivo foi investigar a alocação sexual dependente do tamanho em Solanum lycocarpum St. Hil. Testamos a hipótese de que plantas de maior tamanho investirão na produção de flores hermafroditas, pois indivíduos mais altos economizam mais disponibilidade de recursos para investir em estruturas mais complexas que envolvem maior gasto de energia. A espécie estudada foi S. lycocarpum, uma espécie andromonoica. De junho de 2016 a março de 2017, os dados foram coletados em 38 indivíduos, divididos em dois grupos: o maior grupo de plantas (n = 18; altura = 3-5 m) e o menor grupo de plantas (n = 20; altura = 1-2 m). Nossos dados mostram que houve efeito do tamanho da planta na produção de flores e na alocação sexual. As plantas maiores apresentaram mais flores e maior produção de flores hermafroditas. Além disso, observamos uma relação alométrica entre as características da flor, com investimentos proporcionais em biomassa, tamanho da antera e tamanho do gineceu. Nossos resultados estão de acordo com a teoria de alocação de sexo dependente de tamanho e a hipótese de andromonoicia relacionada a mecanismos para a alocação ótima de recursos para a função masculina e feminina.

Abstract Resource allocation to reproduction can change depending on size, as predicted by the size-dependent sex allocation. This theory is based on the fact that small individuals will invest in the allocation of sex with lower cost of production, usually male gender. In plants, there are some andromonoecy species, presence of hermaphrodite and male flowers in the same individual. Andromonoecy provides a strategy to optimally allocate resources to male and female function, evolving a reproductive energy-saving strategy. Thus, our objective was to investigate the size-dependent sex allocation in Solanum lycocarpum St. Hil. We tested the hypothesis that plants with larger size will invest in the production of hermaphrodite flowers, because higher individuals have greater availability of resources to invest in more complex structures involving greater energy expenditure. The studied species was S. lycocarpum, an andromonoecious species. From June 2016 to March 2017 the data were collected in 38 individuals, divided in two groups: the larger plant group (n=18; height=3-5 m) and the smaller plant group (n=20; height=1-2 m).Our data show that there was effect of plant size on the flower production and the sexual gender allocation. The larger plants showed more flowers and higher production of hermaphrodite flowers. Furthermore, in the flower scale, we observed allometric relationship among the flower’s traits with proportional investments in biomass, anther size and gynoecium size. Our results are in agreement with size-dependent sex allocation theory and andromonoecy hypothesis related to mechanisms for optimal resource allocation to male and female function.

Abstract Breast cancer is the most frequent and lethal neoplastic disease among women worldwide. Psidium Guajava is a promising functional food against cancer, owing to a variety of bioactive compounds. This study aimed to evaluate the anticarcinogenic potential of Pedro Sato (PS), Hitigio (HI) and Tsumori (TS) guava cultivars fruit pulp extracts in MDA-MB-435 and MCF-7 human breast cancer cells. The antioxidant capacity of the extracts and their effect on cell viability, cell cycle and apoptosis were assessed. Additionally, the concentration of carotenoids, total phenolics, ascorbic acid and other physicochemical parameters were evaluated. PS pulp extract showed the highest in vitro antioxidative activity by all tested methods, as well as the highest content of lycopene and total phenolics, while TS pulp extract presented the highest concentration of β-carotene. After 48 hours treatment, all guava cultivars’ extracts caused reduction of MDA-MB-435 and MCF-7 cells viability, with PS and HI being the most effective extracts. All guava extracts caused MDA-MB-435 and MCF-7 cell count reduction in G0/G1 and G2/M phases and increased apoptosis. The present results strongly suggest that guava pulp exerts antiproliferative effect on breast adenocarcinoma cells.

Apresentamos as várias maneiras de definir uma derivada fracionária, na forma de uma introdução histórica ao cálculo fracionário. Partindo do conceito de derivada fracionária, que é uma generalização da integral de Cauchy, abordamos as derivadas fracionárias nos sentidos de Riemann-Liouville e Caputo. Discutimos propostas recentes de novas derivadas fracionárias que, por meio de um processo de limite adequado, recuperam ambas as formulações de Riemann-Liouville e Caputo. Também discutimos outras formulações em que o núcleo da integral é não singular. Com base em um critério recente, justificamos por que tais derivadas podem ser consideradas derivadas fracionárias autênticas. Também apresentamos algumas aplicações de cunho estritamente matemático, junto com uma aplicação a um problema físico específico.

We present the several ways one can define a fractional derivative, in the form of a historical introduction to fractional calculus. Starting with the concept of fractional derivative, which is a generalization of the Cauchy integral, we approach the fractional derivatives in the senses of Riemann-Liouville and Caputo. We discuss recent proposals of new fractional derivatives which, through an adequate limiting process, recover both the Riemann-Liouville and the Caputo formulations. We also discuss other formulations in which the kernel of the integral is nonsingular. On the basis of a recent criterion, we justify why such derivatives can be considered authentic fractional derivatives. We also present some applications of strictly mathematical nature, together with an application to a specific physical problem.

O objetivo do trabalho consistiu em estimar parâmetros genéticos e identificar quais os caracteres agronómicos sujeitos a modificações, em função do arranjo espacial de plantas do crambe, cultivado durante dois anos agrícolas. O estudo foi instalado em blocos casualizados com seis tratamentos e quatro repetições com dois espaçamentos na entrelinha - 0,34 m e 0,45 m - e três densidade de plantas - 20; 30 e 40 - por metro linear. Foram medidos os caracteres: altura da planta (AP), número de ramificações terciárias (NR), número de síliquas por planta (NSP), número de sementes por síliqua (NSS) e massa de 1000 grãos (MMG). Os dados obtidos foram submetidos à análise de variância e as médias foram comparadas pelo teste de Tukey, a de 5% de probabilidade. Foram estimados os seguintes parâmetros genéticos: heratibilidade, coeficiente de variação genotípico e experimental, correlações fenotípicas, genotípicas e ambientais. Os espaçamentos entre linhas avaliados não interferiram em nenhum componente do rendimento do crambe. A densidade de plantas influenciou apenas a altura das plantas e o número de ramificações terciárias. O melhoramento genético no crambe deve-se concentrar na AP, uma vez que este caráter apresenta alta heratibilidade e apresenta correlação genotípica positiva com o NR, NSS e MMG.

This study aimed to estimate genetic parameters and to identify agronomic traits that are subject to change depending on the spatial arrangement of the crambe plants grown in two years. The study consisted of five experiments, a randomized complete block design, with six treatments and four replications, two row spacing - 0.34 and 0.45 m - and three plant densities - 20, 30, 40 - per meter linear, were studied. The traits plant height (PH), number of tertiary branches (NR), seedpods number per plant (NSP), number of seeds per seedpods (NSS) and weight of 1.000 grains (MMG) were measured. Data were subjected to analysis of variance and means were compared by Tukey’s test at 5% probability. The following genetic parameters were estimated: heritability, genotypic and experimental coefficient of variation, phenotypic, genotypic and environmental correlations. Spacing between rows did not interfere in any income component of crambe. The plant density only influenced the plant height and the number of tertiary branches. Genetic improvement in crambe should focus on AP, since this character has high heritability and presents positive genotypic correlation with NR, NSS and MMG.

Las toxicidades letal y subletal del aceite de nim, Bioneem®, sobre el ácaro depredador Proprioseiopsis neotropicus (Acari: Phytoseiidae) fueron evaluadas mediante la combinación de dosis letales (DL), el crecimiento demográfico y estudios de los parámetros biológicos. Se llevaron a cabo bioensayos de dosis-mortalidad para estimar las dosis letales del aceite de nim sobre P. neotropicus mediante análisis de probit. Después, la tasa instantánea de crecimiento poblacional (r i) se utilizó para evaluar los efectos subletales del aceite de nim a P. neotropicus basado en la reproducción y datos de mortalidad. Además, los efectos fueron evaluados mediante la comparación de algunos parámetros de la historia de vida de P. neotropicus expuestos a una dosis subletal de aceite de nim. La dosis de aceite de nim que mata al 50% de la población (DL50) del ácaro depredador P. neotropicus fue estimada en 7,5 ul/ cm². La tasa instantánea de crecimiento poblacional del ácaro depredador P. neotropicus no varió con el aumento de las dosis de aceite de nim. De manera similar, la dosis subletal de aceite de nim no afectó los parámetros biológicos del ácaro depredador. Basado en nuestro enfoque letal y subletal llegamos a la conclusión de que el aceite de nim Bioneen® es generalmente selectivo para el ácaro depredador P. neotropicus.

Lethal and sublethal toxicity of the neem oil Bioneem® to the predatory mite Proprioseiopsis neotropicus (Acari: Phytoseiidae) were evaluated by combining lethal doses (LD) with population growth and biological parameter studies. Dose-mortality bioassays were conducted to estimate the lethal doses of the neem oil to P. neotropicus using probit analyses. Afterwards, the instantaneous rate of increase (r i) was used to evaluate the sublethal effects of the neem oil to P. neotropicus based on reproduction and mortality data. The effects were further assessed by comparing some life history parameters of P. neotropicus exposed to a sublethal dose of neem oil. The dose of neem oil which kills 50% of the population (LD50) of the predatory mite P. neotropicus was 7.5 ul/ cm². The instantaneous rate of increase of the predatory mite P. neotropicus did not vary with increases of dosages of neem oil. Similarly, the LD25 of the neem oil did not affect biological parameters of the predatory mite. Based on our lethal and sublethal approach we conclude that the neem oil Bioneem® is generally selective to the predatory mite P. neotropicus.
