RESUMO Este documento apresenta uma tradução comentada do “Discurso sobre o sistema e a vida de Vico” e seu Prólogo, ambos escritos por Jules Michelet (1798-1874). Esses textos introduzem e apresentam a obra de Giambatistta Vico (1668-1744), em particular sua Ciência nova, que Michelet traduziu e publicou em 1827 e 1835.

ABSTRACT This paper presents a commented translation of “A discourse on the system and the life of Vico” and its prologue, both authored by Jules Michelet (1798-1874). These texts introduce and present the work of Giambatistta Vico (1668-1744), particularly his New Science, which Michelet translated and published in 1827 and 1835.

RESUMEN Este documento presenta una traducción comentada del “Discurso sobre el sistema y la vida de Vico” y su prólogo, ambos escritos por Jules Michelet (1798-1874). Estos textos introducen y muestran la obra de Giambatistta Vico (1668-1744), en particular su Ciencia Nueva, que Michelet tradujo y publicó en 1827 y 1835.

Resumo O objetivo deste artigo é investigar as bases para o entendimento teórico-crítico do romance dentro da obra de Jules Michelet (1798-1874). A hipótese de fundo é a existência de uma teoria do romance em Michelet, teoria essa que ajudaria a explicar a relação ambivalente que o historiador sempre manteve com o gênero, feita de atração e recusa categórica. Para tanto, o artigo explora, em primeiro lugar, o arcabouço teórico próprio à obra desse historiador, com especial atenção para o seu entendimento do poético, inspirado na obra do filósofo Giambattista Vico. Tendo essa revisão como base, empreende-se uma primeira tentativa de sistematização de sua apreensão crítica do romance, tal qual ela aparece, em particular, no título La Bible de l’Humanité (1864).

Abstract In this article we aim to examine the theoretical-critical foundations that underpin the ambivalent approach to the novel as a genre sustained in the work of Jules Michelet. Our hypothesis is that there is a theory of the novel in Michelet’s work which would explain his problematic views on this genre, torn between attraction and refusal. In order to do this, the article revisits, first, the theoretical structure on which this historiographic work is based, particularly its relationship with the philosophy of Giambattista Vico. Second, we undertake a first attempt to systematize Michelet’s criticism of the novel by taking into account the historic-theoretical approach proposed in the La Bible de l’Humanité (1864).

Résumé Cet article vise à examiner les bases théorico-critiques qui fondent l’approche ambivalent du roman soutenu dans l’œuvre de Jules Michelet. Notre hypothèse est celle de l’existence d’une théorie du roman chez Michelet laquelle pourrait expliquer son rapport problématique à ce genre, tiraillé entre l’attraction et le refus. Pour ce faire, l’article revisite, premièrement, la structure théorique sur laquelle repose cette œuvre historiographique, particulièrement son rapport avec la philosophie de Giambattista Vico. Ensuite, il sera question d’entreprendre un premier essai de systématisation de la critique du roman chez Michelet, en reprenant notammentl’approche historico-théorico qui en propose le titre La Bible de l`Humanité (1864).

Desde sua publicação, em 1862, a recepção de A Feiticeira foi marcada pela perplexidade diante da maneira como seu autor, Jules Michelet, integrou o mito à narrativa histórica. Esse procedimento, que inspirou uma fortuna crítica disposta a ler tal obra mais sob a ótica literária do que como trabalho de história, tende a distorcer os objetivos e propósitos visados pelo historiador. Este artigo visa apresentar uma interpretação para as heterodoxias narrativas de Michelet como o resultado de uma reflexão eminentemente historiográfica. Para isso, sustento que a compreensão do papel central do mito, tal como mobilizado em A Feiticeira, apoia-se na constituição de um "método histórico", cujo estabelecimento e fundamentação são diretamente derivados da leitura e da tradução que Michelet propôs para a obra do filósofo napolitano Giambattista Vico, em particular, a Ciência nova.

Since its publication in 1862, the reception of The Sorceress has been marked by a bewilderment prompted by the way Jules Michelet employs the myth as a form of historical narrative. In fact, his procedure has inspired readings that consider the book a work of literature, rather than a History book. This is very misleading, for it distorts Michelet's own goals and methods. This paper presents an interpretation of Michelet's heterodox narratives as a historiographical work. I argue that, in order to understand the central role of mythological structures in the "historical method" developed in The Sorceress, one needs to pay attention to the fact that it is grounded on the work of Neapolitan philosopher Giambattista Vico, especially in Michelet's own translation of Scienza nuova.
