ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to examine the compatibility of the vegetation that makes up the afforestation of Celestino Cavalheiro Avenue in Sao Gabriel, State of Rio Grande do Sul with the urban structures that surround it. For this, assessments of the vegetation and the urban structures of the location were carried out. The results showed that the majority of individuals were characterized for having exotic origin and being located in the avenue median; presenting adult possession and large open area of pavement. The individuals are located 0.30 m off the curb and are between 3 and 4.9 m tall, with 1.1 to 2 trunks; thus generating traffic interference.

RESUMO O objetivo deste trabalho foi analisar a compatibilidade da vegetação que compõe a arborização da Avenida Celestino Cavalheiro, São Gabriel-RS, com as estruturas urbanas. Foi realizado um censo da vegetação e das estruturas urbanas que a envolvem. Os resultados demonstraram que a maioria dos indivíduos caracteriza-se como tendo origem exótica, está localizada no canteiro central, possui porte adulto e apresenta ampla área livre de pavimentação. Esses exemplares distam 0,30 m do meio-fio, possuem entre 3 a 4,9 m de altura, com fuste de 1,1 a 2 m, gerando, dessa forma, interferência no trânsito.

RESUMO No Conjunto Habitacional Tancredo Neves, Santa Maria-RS, foi realizado um censo da arborização de suas ruas e avenida, permitindo, desse modo, avaliar qualitativamente a vegetação que a compõe. Das 112 espécies vegetais que totalizam 2.788 indivíduos distribuídos irregularmente, 14 espécies perfazem 70,6% do total. A maioria possui porte jovem, ou apresenta-se em estágio de muda, com sistema radicular profundo sem causar danos, condição fitossanitária satisfatória e a área livre predominante é restrita. A necessidade de tratamento com maior freqüência é a poda leve (43,3%). Grande parte dos danos são provocados por poda (46,0%) executados pelos próprios moradores. Os vegetais são compatíveis em sua maioria (44,9%) em relação aos equipamentos públicos e edificações.

ABSTRACT Tancredo Neves area, Santa Maria, RS, a census was conducted with the objective of investigating the urban vegetation of its streets and avenues thus allowing the qualitative evaluation of its vegetation components. From 112 vegetal species, which account for 2,778 units distributed irregularly, 14 species totalized 70, 6 of the total. Most of them have a new dimension, are in the seedling, stage and are not under any spinning. The prevailing area is limited, with a deep radicular system without causing any damage, and a satisfactory phyto-sanitary condition. The patterns regarding its distance from the curb and buildings and walls are in accordance with the literature. Only the distance from the lampposts is not accordance with these principles. The most frequent treatment needed consists of pruning the tree lightly (43,3%). Most of the damages were caused by pruning (46,0%) which is done by local inhabitants. The vegetables are compatible, in their great majority (44,9%) to the equipments and buildings.

RESUMO Em um inventário de 14 unidades amostrais, de 15 x 50 m (750 m2), realizado em uma Floresta Estacional Decidual, localizada no Morro do Centro de Instrução de Santa Maria, Distrito de Boca do Monte, em Santa Maria, RS, para o estudo da estrutura fitossociológica. Para tal, foram identificados e quantificados os indivíduos com circunferência a altura do peito (CAP) maior ou igual a 30 cm. Em cada amostra foram identificadas duas sub-amostras circulares concêntricas, para análise dos indivíduos em regeneração natural. Uma de 10 m2 (raio de 1,78 m) para as classes de 0 a 15 cm e outra de 100 m2 (raio de 5,64 m) para as classes de 15,1 a 30 cm de circunferência. Identificaram-se 51 espécies vegetais, distribuídas em 45 gêneros e 26 famílias botânicas. As espécies Cupania vernalis, Trichilia clausseni, Nectandra magapotamica, Myrcianthes pungens e Mataybae laeagnoides estão entre as mais características e importantes da associação, tanto em relação a estrutura vertical como horizontal.

ABSTRACT In one inventory of fourteen sample units of 15 x 30 m (750 m2) performed in a portion of the Decidual Seasonal Forest, located on the top of the Army Instruction Center of ‘Boca do Monte’, district of Santa Maria, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, carried out a study about phytosociological structure. To do so, the individuals with circumference at breast height (CAP) bigger or equal than 30 cm were identified and quantified. In each sample, two circular and concentric subsamples were identified for an analysis of the individuals in natural regeneration process, one subsample of 10 m2 with a radius of 1,78 m for the circumference classes from 0 to 15 cm and the other one of 100 m2 with a radius of 5,64 m for the circumference classes from 15,1 to 30 cm. There are 51 vegetable species distributed in 45 classes and 26 botanical families which were identified. Cupania vernalis, Trichilia clausseni, Nectandra magapotamica, Myrcianthes pungens and Mataybae laeagnoides are among the most important and characteristic species from the association, in relation either with the vertical or the horizon structure, creating the typical physionomy of this forest.

Através de um levantamento em 56 ruas, foi avaliada a arborização da cidade de Bento Gonçalves, RS. Concluiu-se, que a arborização atual corresponde a 45% das necessidades e que os altos índices de falhas e faltas sugerem a criação de um plano de arborização e de educação ambiental.

A survey of 56 streets was conducted in the Bento Gonçalves, RS city aiming to observe the general characteristics of its arboreous areas. It was concluded that the arboreous areas corresponds to 45% of the necessities and that the high rate of failures and gaps suggests the criation of tree planting program and a environmental education.

RESUMO Um levantamento nas 56 ruas que formam a área central da cidade de Bento Gonçalves, permitiu avaliar de forma qualitativa as condições em que se encontram os vegetais que formam a arborização urbana. Os exemplares, quanto aos aspectos físicos e sanitários, são considerados “bons” e não exercem danos às calçadas, pois apresentam raízes profundas. A maioria dos vegetais (51,7%) não se encontram sob fiação, porém, a poda se consiste em uma prática frequente.

ABSTRACT A survey conducted in central streets of Bento Gonçalves city allowed to evaluate the conditions of the urban arboreal vegetation. The physical and sanitary aspects were considered as “good” and no damage to the sidewalks was observed since the plants have deep roots. Most of the plants (51,7%) are not placed under electric wires. However, the branch cutting is a frequent practice.
