RESUMO Desde a Antiguidade, papagaios, periquitos e afins (Psittacidae) fascinaram os europeus por seu vivo colorido e uma notável capacidade de interação com seres humanos. A descoberta do Novo Mundo nada faria além de acrescentar novos elementos ao tráfico de animais exóticos há muito estabelecido pelos europeus com a África e o Oriente. Sem possuir grandes mamíferos, a América tropical participaria desse comércio com o que tinha de mais atrativo, essencialmente felinos, primatas e aves - em particular os papagaios, os quais eram embarcados em bom número. Contudo, a julgar pelos documentos do Brasil colônia, esses voláteis podiam inspirar muito pouca simpatia, pois nenhum outro animal - exceto as formigas - foi tantas vezes mencionado como praga para a agricultura. Além disso, alguns psitácidas mostravam-se tão loquazes que inspiravam a séria desconfiança de serem animais demoníacos ou possessos, pois só três classes de entidades - anjos, homens e demônios - possuíam o dom da palavra. Nos dias de hoje, vários representantes dos Psittacidae ainda constituem uma ameaça para a agricultura, enquanto os indivíduos muito faladores continuam despertando a suspeita de estarem possuídos pelo demônio. Transcendendo a mera curiosidade, essa crença exemplifica o quão intrincadas podem ser as relações do homem com o chamado “mundo natural”, revelando um universo mais amplo e multifacetado do que se poderia supor a princípio. Nesse sentido, a existência de aves capazes de falar torna essa relação ainda mais complexa e evidencia que as dificuldades de estabelecer o limite entre o animal e o humano se estendem além dos primatas e envolvem as mais inusitadas espécies zoológicas.

ABSTRACT Since ancient times, parrots and their allies (Psittacidae) have fascinated Europeans by their striking colors and notable ability to interact with human beings. The discovery of the New World added new species to the international exotic animal trade, which for many centuries had brought beasts to Europe from Africa and the Orient. Lacking large mammals, tropical America participated in this trade with its most appealing species, essentially felines, primates and birds - especially parrots - which were shipped in large numbers. It should be noted, however, that at times these birds were not well liked. In fact, according to documents from colonial Brazil, only the ants rank higher than parrots as the animals most often mentioned as agricultural pests. On the other hand, some of these birds were so chatty that people suspected them to be demonic or possessed animals, since only three classes of beings - angels, men and demons - have the ability to speak. Nowadays, several Psittacidae still constitute a threat to agriculture, and the suspicion that extremely talkative birds were demon possessed has also survived. More than a joke or a mere curiosity, this belief exemplifies how intricate man’s relationships with the “natural world” may be. In this sense, the existence of birds that are able to speak adds a further twist to these relationships, demonstrating that the problem of establishing a boundary between the animal and the human does not only involve primates, but also includes some unusual zoological species.

Os trechos relativos à fauna do Estado do Grão-Pará e Maranhão, escritos pelo Padre Anselmo Eckart (1721-1807), S. J., em 1785, são traduzidos e comentados. Foram incluídas notas críticas sobre cada animal mencionado, atualizando o conhecimento sobre a espécie e comparando as informações zoológicas e linguísticas coligidas pelo jesuíta com outros documentos da época e com a literatura científica pertinente.

The passages related to the fauna of the State of Grão-Pará and Maranhão, written by Father Anselm Eckart (1721-1807), S. J., in 1785, are translated and commented. Critical notes about every cited animal were included, bringing the species knowledge up to date and comparing the zoological and linguistic information compiled by the Jesuit with other contemporary documents and with the related scientific literature.

Vagos em seu traçado e pródigos em figuras de seres reais ou fabulosos, a iconografia dos mapas medievais cumpria papel nada desprezível para o reconhecimento de terras virtualmente desconhecidas pela Cristandade. Em um mundo sem latitude e longitude confiáveis, os acidentes da paisagem, os povos existentes e até mesmo determinados componentes da fauna e flora poderiam transformar-se em variáveis de extrema importância para a orientação geográfica. Apesar de alcançarem maior precisão nas tentativas de representar o espaço geográfico, experimentarem considerável avanço na determinação da latitude e prosseguirem na busca de um método prático para obter a longitude, os cartógrafos da época dos Grandes Descobrimentos ainda se preocuparam em figurar elementos notáveis - imaginários ou não - capazes de auxiliar na orientação dos viajantes nas mais diferentes regiões do globo. Com a crescente expansão europeia e a autêntica revolução científica em curso no século XVII, os extensos comentários e as vistosas representações da natureza e dos habitantes dos locais perderiam rapidamente o papel de referência nos mapas seiscentistas, conservando apenas seu valor estético e econômico. A chegada do século XVIII consolidaria a definitiva transformação das ilustrações em um elemento essencialmente decorativo, sem qualquer outro papel relevante em termos cartográficos. Além de menos numerosas, as figuras amiúde tendem a uma certa estilização e acentuam seu deslocamento para a periferia dos mapas, que soem apresentar alguma ornamentação apenas nas cártulas ou cartuchos. Apesar de muitas vezes conservarem algum tipo de relação com o espaço geográfico considerado, os motivos escolhidos também podem adquirir relativa independência, havendo numerosos casos de alegorias e composições com variadas figuras mitológicas, bem como representações de caráter histórico destinadas a ressaltar o poderio de um determinado ator político.

Vague in the outlines and abounding in figures of real or fabulous creatures, the iconography of medieval maps played a significant role in helping users to recognize lands that were virtually unknown to Christendom. In a world with no reliable latitudes and longitudes, the land contours, inhabitants and even certain elements of fauna and flora could become variables of utmost importance for geographic orientation. Notwithstanding the higher levels of precision achieved in their efforts to represent geographic space, the considerable advancements made in latitude determination, and their continuous pursuit of a practical method for the establishment of longitudes, the cartographers of the Age of Discoveries still went to the trouble of depicting notable elements - whether real or imaginary - to help travelers get their bearings around different regions of the globe. As the presence of Europeans continued to expand and an authentic scientific revolution took place in the 17th century, the lengthy notes and eye-catching representations of nature and local inhabitants soon lost their utility as points of reference on 17th-century maps to become mere accessories of aesthetic and commercial value. The advent of the 18th century consolidated, once and for all, the transformation of such illustrations into essentially decorative elements with no other relevant role to play in mapmaking. In addition to decreasing in number, the figures became more stylized and moved to the borders of the maps as ornamental motifs. Although they often maintained some sort of relation with the geographic space depicted on the map, the motifs chosen could also constitute a rather independent element. In fact, allegories, compositions with a variety of mythological figures, and historical representations were often used to underscore the power of certain political agents.

Encontrados no Brasil desde os primórdios da colonização portuguesa, os presépios logo tiveram de adaptar-se à realidade local, circunstância muito propícia ao aparecimento de concepções heterodoxas e ao emprego de elementos exóticos da fauna e flora de cada região. Como registros envolvendo insetos são muito pouco comuns, chama a atenção que fêmeas de saúva, Atta sp. (Hymenoptera, Formicidae), tenham sido aproveitadas na composição de presépios no estado de São Paulo. Tendo subsistido pelo menos até a década 1960, os "presépios de formigas" existentes em cidades como Embu das Artes poderiam estar relacionados às "formigas vestidas" criadas por Jules Martin, curiosa manufatura paulistana do último quartel do século XIX.

Present in Brazil since the beginning of Portuguese colonization, crèche nativity scenes were soon adapted to local reality, a propitious circumstance for the appearance of heterodox conceptions and the use of exotic elements of the fauna and flora peculiar to each region. As records about insects are very uncommon, it is noteworthy that females of leaf-cutting ants, Atta sp. (Hymenoptera, Formicidae), were used to compose crèche nativity scenes in São Paulo State. Having subsisted at least up to the decade of 1960, the "ant crèches" of cities such as Embu das Artes could be related to the then famous "dressed ants" created by Jules Martin, a curious manufacture of the city of São Paulo in the last quarter of the 19th century.

O Regimento proueytoso contra ha pestenença e o Modus curandi cum balsamo são apresentados em edição fac-similar dos exemplares existentes, respectivamente, na Biblioteca Pública de Évora e na Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal. Ambos os fac-símiles receberam edições semidiplomáticas. Segue-se a essa transliteração para caracteres modernos uma tradução; no caso do Regimento, uma tradução intra-línguas, que modernizou o texto; no caso do Modus curandi, o texto latino recebeu tradução para o português atual. No presente texto explicam-se os critérios empregados na edição semidiplomática e, no caso do Regimento, na modernização do texto.

This issue features facsimiles of Regimento proueytoso contra ha pestenença and Modus curandi cum balsamo, based on the original texts housed in the Biblioteca Pública de Évora and the Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal, respectively. Semi-diplomatic editions of both facsimiles - with transliterations into modern characters - have also been provided. These are followed by translations, in the case of Regimento from old to modern Portuguese and in the case of Modus curandi from Latin to modern-day Portuguese. This text explains the criteria used in preparing the semi-diplomatic versions and in modernizing the text of Regimento.

Apresenta-se um breve panorama das principais teorias biogeográficas, mostrando como o conhecimento acumulado por naturalistas viajantes foi responsável por seu teste e eventual rejeição. Enfatiza-se a importância de se conhecerem os relatos dos antigos viajantes e naturalistas, para avaliar o quão severa foi a ação antrópica sobre a distribuição geográfica de alguns grupos de vertebrados.

This article shows a brief panorama of the most important biogeographic theories and how scientific knowledge rendered by travelling naturalists plays a relevant role in testing and sometimes rejecting some of these theories. The article also emphasizes the importance of becoming familiar with past travellers' and naturalists' reports in order to understand how severe human action was in geographically distributing some vertebrate groups.

The case of the Indigo, or Lear's Macaw, Anodorhynchus leari, is unique in South American ornithology. The species, although described more than 100 years ago, was known only through very few living specimens, which entered occasionally the bird trade, without any indication of their origins. It was presumed "probably some part of Brazil" (Salvadori, 1891). The last speculation was that it was unlikely, though not impossible, that the Indigo Macaw might not be an independem species, but rather, a hybrid between the two other well known blue macaws, Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus and A. glaucus (Voous, 1965).
