Abstract A lectin from the marine sponge Haliclona (Reniera) implexiformis (HiL) was isolated by affinity chromatography on Sepharose™ matrix. HiL showed specificity for galactose and its derivatives. The glycoproteins porcine stomach mucin (PSM) and bovine stomach mucin (BSM) were potent inhibitors. Hemagglutinating activity of the lectin was maximal between pH 5.0 and 9.0. The lectin remained active until 60°C. The presence of CaCl2 and EDTA did not affect the hemagglutinating activity. In SDS-PAGE, HiL showed a single band of 20 kDa under reduced conditions, whereas in the non-reducing conditions, it showed a band of 20 kDa and one additional band of 36 kDa. The average molecular mass determined by Electrospray Ionization Mass Spectrometry (ESI-MS) was 35.874 ± 2 Da in native and non-reducing conditions, whereas carboxyamidomethylated-lectin showed 18,111 Da. These data indicated that HiL consists in a dimer formed by identical subunits linked by disulfide bonds. Partial amino acid sequence of HiL was determined by mass spectrometry, and revealed that it is a new type of lectin, which showed no similarity with any protein. Secondary structure consisted of 6% α-helice, 31% β-sheet, 18% β-turn and 45% random coil. HiL showed significant reduction in the number of viable cells of Staphylococcus biofilms.

Ananas comosus, popularly known as pineapple, has well defined plant anatomy and numerous pharmacologically active phytochemicals. Some of these are responsible for the species antimicrobial potential, which has been widely studied given the bacterial resistance to the currently used antibiotics. Considering this, it is defined that the main characteristic of a drug is the absence of toxic effects, thus, there is a need to seek data regarding the toxicity of A. comosus, collaborating for its possible use as a drug. Comparing hydroalcoholic extracts from the crown leaves, skin and pulp of the infructescence, it was possible to determine that the three tested extracts are non-toxic, being the one with the lowest toxicity to Artemia salina Leach (leaves extract with LC50 equal to 994 μg/mL) and to lamb's blood (pulp extract with percentage of haemolysis equal to 0.83%). Studies concerning principles and methodologies similar to those used here have found comparable results stating the low toxicity of the plant. These results contribute to the research that promotes the use of pineapple as a phytotherapeutic agent and reaffirms its presence in the Brazilian Unified Health System.

Ananas comosus, conocido popularmente como piña, tiene una anatomía de planta bien definida y numerosos fitoquímicos farmacológicamente activos. Algunos de éstos son responsables del potencial antimicrobiano de la especie, que ha sido ampliamente estudiado dada la resistencia bacteriana a los antibióticos actualmente utilizados. Teniendo esto en cuenta, se define que la característica principal de un medicamento es la ausencia de efectos tóxicos, por lo tanto, es necesario buscar datos sobre la toxicidad de A. comosus, colaborando para su posible uso como fármaco. Comparando extractos hidroalcohólicos de las hojas de la corona, cáscara y pulpa de la infrutescencia, fue posible determinar que los tres extractos probados no son tóxicos, siendo el de menor toxicidad para Artemia salina Leach (extracto de hojas con CL50 igual a 994 μg/mL) y a sangre de cordero (extracto de pulpa con porcentaje de hemólisis igual a 0,83%). Los estudios sobre principios y metodologías similares a los utilizados aquí han encontrado resultados comparables que indican la baja toxicidad de la planta. Estos resultados aportan a las investigaciónes que promueven el uso de la piña como agente fitoterapéutico y reafirman su presencia en el Sistema Único de Salud de Brasil.

RESUMO O cultivo de milho em sequeiro é amplamente explorado no Nordeste Brasileiro pela agricultura familiar, para alimentação humana e animal. Para melhorar a captação da água da chuva e a umidade do solo, pode-se adotar a cobertura morta, embora essa prática ainda seja raramente aplicada no cultivo de milho de sequeiro. Neste contexto, o objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a variabilidade espacial da produtividade do milho, com base nos atributos físicos do solo e no crescimento e produção da planta, sob regime de sequeiro na presença e na ausência de cobertura morta na região semiárida. O estudo foi realizado de maio a setembro de 2016 em Pesqueira-PE, avaliando o desenvolvimento e a produção de milho em parcelas experimentais, adotando-se o sistema tradicional sem cobertura morta e com cobertura. Estabeleceu-se dois grids com 40 pontos em malha de 4 x 10 m, com espaçamento de 1 m para amostragem de solo e avaliação biométrica. Para análise estatística, foram sorteadas trinta amostras aleatoriamente em cada parcela. O milho cultivado na presença de cobertura apresentou maior desenvolvimento, com distribuição simétrica para todas as variáveis, exceto para a umidade do solo e o diâmetro do colmo. O teor de areia, a umidade do solo, a altura da primeira bifurcação, o número de folhas, o comprimento da folha, a altura da planta e o peso da espiga apresentaram de moderada a forte dependência espacial para as duas condições, com maior dependência espacial sempre observada para os parâmetros de desenvolvimento na área com cobertura morta.

ABSTRACT Maize crop under rainfed conditions is widely grown in the Brazilian Northeast on community farms for human and animal consumption. The application of mulch could be adopted to enhance rainwater harvesting and soil moisture levels, although such practice is rarely applied in rainfed cultivation. This study aimed to evaluate the spatial variability of maize productivity, based on soil physical attributes and plant growth and yield, under a rainfed regime in the presence and absence of mulch in the Brazilian semi-arid region. The study was conducted from May to September 2016 in Pesqueira - PE (locality of the Semiarid of Pernambuco State, Northeast, Brazil), during which the development and production of maize in experimental plots were evaluated, and maize was grown using the traditional cropping system with and without mulching. Two grids with 40 points in a 4 × 10 m mesh were established, with spacing of 1 m for soil sampling and maize biometric evaluation. For statistical analysis, 30 samples were randomly selected from each plot. Maize cultivated in the presence of mulch showed higher development, with symmetrical distribution for all variables except for soil moisture and stem diameter. Sand content, soil moisture, height of the first cob, number of leaves, leaf length, plant height, and cob weight presented moderate to strong spatial scale dependence for the two cropping conditions, with higher spatial dependence consistently observed for the development parameters in the covered area.

RESUMO Os efeitos da configuração palma-sorgo e de diferentes lâminas de irrigação sobre o crescimento, consumo de água e eficiência do sistema de produção da palma foram investigados neste estudo. O experimento foi conduzido em Serra Talhada, PE, entre os anos de 2012 e 2013, com a palma disposta em blocos ao acaso, quatro repetições, em parcelas subdivididas (5 x 2) de cinco lâminas (0, 8,75, 17,5, 26,25 e 35% da evapotranspiração de referência) e dois sistemas de cultivo (palma exclusiva e consórcio palma-sorgo). A evapotranspiração real da cultura foi calculada por meio do balanço de água no solo. Estimou-se a razão evapotranspiração real e de referência, além das eficiências do uso da água e da terra. As lâminas de irrigação e a adoção do consórcio afetaram apenas a largura do dossel e a biomassa dos cladódios da palma forrageira. A razão evapotranspiração real e de referência aumentou com o incremento da lâmina de irrigação, enquanto as maiores eficiências do uso da água com base na massa seca ocorreram nas lâminas de água superiores a 1.096 mm ano-1 no consórcio (21,8 ± 6,8 kg ha-1 mm-1). As lâminas de irrigação não afetaram a eficiência do uso da terra (0,83). No sistema palma-sorgo, recomendam-se lâminas de água entre 1.096 e 1.202 mm ano-1.

ABSTRACT The effects of the forage cactus sorghum configuration and different irrigation depths on the growth, water use and efficiency of the forage cactus production system were investigated in this study. The experiment was conducted in the municipality of Serra Talhada, Pernambuco State, Brazil, between the years 2012 and 2013. Forage cactus was distributed in randomized blocks with factorial scheme and four replicates, in split plots (5 x 2), with five irrigation depths (0, 8.75, 17.5, 26.25 and 35% of the reference evapotranspiration, ET0) and two cropping systems (forage cactus monocropping and forage cactus sorghum intercropping). Crop evapotranspiration was calculated through soil water balance. The ratio between crop and reference evapotranspiration, and land use and water use efficiencies, were estimated. Irrigation depths and the intercropping affected only forage cactus canopy width and cladode biomass. The ratio between crop and reference evapotranspiration increased with the increase of irrigation depths, while the highest water use efficiency based on dry matter occurred at irrigation depths higher than 1,096 mm year-1 in the intercropping (21.8 ± 6.8 kg ha-1 mm-1). Irrigation depths did not affect land use efficiency (0.83). Water depths from 1,096 to 1,202 mm year-1 are recommended in the forage cactus sorghum system.

Resumo Fundamentos: A disfunção erétil (DE) e a doença arterial coronariana (DAC) compartilham os mesmos fatores de risco e as associações entre DE, qualidade de vida (QV) e DAC têm sido motivo de estudos recentes. Objetivo: Avaliar se a DE está associada a piora da QV em pacientes com DAC. Métodos: Estudo transversal, multicêntrico, prospectivo e analítico, realizado de dezembro de 2014 a abril de 2016, que recrutou 304 homens (idade média: 57 ± 9,9 anos) com diagnóstico clínico de DAC. A QV foi avaliada através do Short Form-36 e a DE pelo Índice Internacional de Função Erétil. Foram realizadas análises estatísticas descritiva e analítica, sendo que o teste não paramétrico Kruskal-Wallis foi usado para analisar se existem diferenças significativas em cada domínio de qualidade de vida quando se comparam os diferentes tipos de DE. Para todos os testes, valor de p ≤ 0,05 foi considerado significante. Resultados: A prevalência de DE foi de 76,3%. Abstract Background: Erectile dysfunction (ED) and coronary artery disease (CAD) share the same risk factors and the associations between ED, quality of life (QoL) and CAD have been the subject of recent studies. Objective: To evaluate whether ED is associated with worsening QoL in patients with CAD. Methods: A cross-sectional, multicenter, prospective and analytic study was carried out from EDcember 2014 to April 2016, which recruited 304 men (mean age: 57 ± 9.9 years) with clinical diagnosis of CAD. QoL was assessed using Short Form-36 and ED by the International Erectile Function InEDx. EDscriptive and analytical statistical analyzes were performed, and the Kruskal-Wallis non-parametric test was used to test whether there are significant differences in each quality of life domain when comparing different types of ED. For all tests, p ≤ 0.05 was consiEDred significant. Results: The prevalence of ED was 76.3%. RESUMOIntrodução:Os congressos médicos são um meio eficiente, embora restrito, de expor a produção científica de uma determinada especialidade. Entretanto, o número de artigos completos publicados resultantes dos trabalhos apresentados em congressos e publicados como resumos é muito inferior ao número dos trabalhos apresentados durante os eventos.Objetivo:Dimensionar o número de artigos completos publicados e indexados em bases de dados virtuais, no período de 2012 a janeiro de 2015, apresentados originalmente no XXVIII Congresso Brasileiro de Patologia e no XXVIII Congreso de La Sociedade Latinoamericana de Patología.Material e método:Nos eventos mencionados, foram apresentados 701 trabalhos e seus resumos publicados nos anais do congresso. Efetuou-se um estudo retrospectivo observacional consultando as seguintes bases de dados biomédicas: Scientific Electronic Library Online (Scielo) e US National Library of Medicine do National Institutes of Health (PubMed), com o auxílio do buscador Google, tomando por base o título do trabalho e a lista de autores.Resultados:Dos 701 trabalhos analisados, 635 (90,6%) eram originados de instituições brasileiras, 60 (8,6%), de instituições estrangeiras e em seis (0,8%) não foram identificadas as instituições de origem. Foram encontrados 63 (8,8%) trabalhos completos publicados e indexados às bases de dados consultadas. As revistas internacionais foram o destino de 38 (60,3%) publicações.Conclusão:É relativamente pequeno o número de artigos completos publicados na área de Patologia, resultantes dos trabalhos apresentados nos eventos estudados, nos três primeiros anos após a realização do evento. Esse número é baixo, quando comparado com o de outros congressos internacionais, contudo, é superior ao de alguns congressos médicos brasileiros analisados em estudos semelhantes.

ABSTRACTIntroduction:The medical congresses are an efficient way, although restricted, to expose the scientific production of a particular specialty. However, the number of complete articles published resulting from papers presented at congresses and published as abstracts is much lower than the number of papers presented during the meetings.Objective:Scale the number of complete articles published and indexed in online databases, from 2012 to January 2015, originally presented at the 28th Congresso Brasileiro de Patologia (28th Brazilian Congress of Pathology) and the 28th Congreso de la Sociedad Latinoamericana de Patología (28th Latin American Society of Pathology Congress).Material and method:In the meetings mentioned 701 papers were presented and their abstracts published in the congresses annals. An observational retrospective study was conducted consulting the following biomedical databases: Scientific Electronic Library Online (Scielo) and US National Library of Medicine on the National Institutes of Health (PubMed), with the help of the Google search engine, based on the article title and the list of authors.Results:From 701 studies analyzed, 635 (90.6%) were from Brazilian institutions, 60 (8.6%) from foreign institutions, and six (0.8%) did not identified their home institutions. There were found 63 (8.8%) complete articles published and indexed to consulted databases. International journals were the destination of 38 (60.3%) publications.Conclusion:The number of complete articles published in Pathology area arising from the papers presented in the studied meetings in the first three years after the meetings is relatively small. This number is low compared with other international conferences; however, it is higher than some Brazilian medical congresses analyzed in similar studies.

Avaliou-se, neste estudo, o comportamento de 12 genótipos de arroz de terras altas na Zona da Mata de Pernambuco quanto a caracteres de importância agronômica. Utilizou-se o delineamento de blocos ao acaso, com 4 repetições, parcelas constituídas de 5 linhas de 4 m e espaçamento de 0,50 m. Os experimentos foram conduzidos no ano agrícola de 2006, entre os meses de abril e agosto, nos municípios de Palmares e Vitória de Santo Antão. Dentre os caracteres avaliados verificaram-se diferenças significativas entre os genótipos para os caracteres: altura de planta, acamamento, ciclo de florescimento e de maturação, perfilhamento médio, comprimento de panículas, peso de mil grãos e rendimento de grãos inteiros. A interação genótipo x ambiente foi significativa para os caracteres altura de planta, ciclo de florescimento e percentual de espiguetas estéreis. Os genótipos Bonança, BRA 1506, CNAs 9045 e BRSMG curinga, apresentaram os melhores comportamentos para os caracteres: altura da planta, acamamento, ciclo de florescimento e de maturação, além de bom perfilhamento e médio rendimento e, portanto, são os mais promissores a serem recomendados para o plantio na referida região, especificamente no período entre os meses de abril a julho.

Twelve upland rice genotypes were evaluated in the 'Zona da Mata' of Pernambuco State regarding characteristics of agronomical importance. The experimental design was randomized block with four replications and plots composed of 5 rows of 4 m length and 0.5 m spacing. The experiments were carried out from April to August during the agricultural year 2006 at the Palmares and Vitoria de Santo Antão municipalities. Amongst the evaluated characteristics there were significant differences among genotypes for plant height, lodging, flowering and maturation cycle, number of tillers per plant, length of panicle, 1000-grain weight and grain yield. Genotype versus environment interaction was significant for the characteristics of plant height, flowering, cycle and percentage of spikelet sterility. The genotypes Bonança, BRA 1506, CNAs 9045 and BRSMG curinga showed better performance on plant height, lodging, flowering and maturation cycles besides good tillering per plant and average yield. Therefore, these genotypes bring a good perspective for cultivation in the region during the period of April to July.

Na localidade de São Bento do Una, Agreste Semi-árido de Pernambuco, foram avaliadas 12 cultivares de milho (híbridos e variedades) no triênio 1989/1991, com o objetivo de se identificar e avaliar o comportamento de cultivares de milho nessa região. O delineamento experimental foi de blocos ao acaso, com 12 tratamentos e três repetições. Avaliaram-se a produção de grãos, a altura da planta, o número de dias até a floração masculina, a altura de inserção da espiga e a população das plantas. Foi realizado um estudo de correlação entre os dados obtidos, cujos os resultados médios de produtividade de grãos variaram de 4.215 a 4.938 kg ha-1, nos híbridos duplos XL-678 e BR-201, respectivamente. Quanto às variedades, a oscilação foi de 3.777 a 4.412 kg ha-1, nos materiais BR-5028 e CMS-22, respectivamente. De maneira geral, houve supremacia de 13% em favor dos híbridos, com relação à produção de grãos, quando comparados com as variedades. O híbrido comercial (BR-201) apresentou-se 11% mais produtivo que a variedade mais produtiva (CMS-22) em relação à produtividade de grãos.

At São Bento do Una locality of the Semi-arid "Agreste Region" of State of Pernambuco, Brazil, 12 maize cultivars were evaluated. The objetive of this study was to evaluate the performance of maize cultivars in this region. The experiment was carried out in randomized blocks with three replications. The evaluated parameters were: grain production, plant height, flowering, ear height and plant population. The grain production varied from 4,215 to 4,938 kg ha-1 for Double hibrid 678, and BR-201 materials, respectively. In general, the hybrid materials produced 13% more. The varieties presented yield levels of 3,777 kg ha-1 (BR-5028) to 4,412 kg ha-1 (CMS-22). The BR-201 hybrid presented 11% increase compared to CMS-22 variety in terms of grain yield.

Descrevem-se três surtos de intoxicação por nitratos e nitritos em bovinos na região semi-árida do estado da Paraíba, nordeste do Brasil. O primeiro surto foi causado por Echinochloa polystachya (capim-mandante) e os demais por Pennisetum purpureum (capim-elefante) e ocorreram após um período prolongado de seca, após o início das primeiras chuvas. Em um dos surtos causado por Pennisetum purpureum, uma parte da área onde estava o pasto que continha níveis altos de nitratos havia sido fertilizada com esterco de bovino. No primeiro surto morreram 5 bovinos de um total de 11, no segundo morreram 21 de um total de 81 e no terceiro morreram 3 de um total de 19 bovinos. Os sinais clínicos se caracterizaram por anorexia, dispnéia, ranger de dentes, depressão ou hiperexitabilidade, tremores, contrações abdominais, salivação, corrimento nasal, andar cambaleante, mucosas cianóticas e, finalmente, decúbito. A presença de nitratos e nitritos foi detectada no sangue dos animais e nos pastos por meio da prova de difenilamina. Parece que o principal fator que determinou a concentração de altos níveis de nitratos nas plantas foi a ocorrência de chuvas depois de um longo período de seca. Outro fator importante no surto causado por Pennisetum purpureum foi a fertilização do solo com esterco.

Three outbreaks of nitrate poisoning are reported from the semiarid region of the state of Paraíba, northeastern Brazil. One outbreak caused by Echinochloa polystachya (capim-mandante) and two others caused by Pennisetum purpureum (capim-elefante) occurred at the end of the dry season, after the first rains. In one of the outbreaks caused by Pennisetum purpureum part of the pasture had been fertilized with cattle manure. Five out of 11 cattle died on one farm, 27 out of 81 on another, and 3 out of 9 on a third one. Clinical signs were anorexia, respiratory distress, teeth grinding, depression or hyperexitability, tremors, abdominal contractions, salivation, nasal discharge, uncoordinated gait, cyanosis, and finally recumbency. Nitrates and nitrites in the blood of affected cattle and pastures were determined by the diphenylamine test. It is suggested that the main reason for nitrate accumulation in the grasses was the prolonged draught followed by rain. In one of the outbreaks caused by Pennisetum purpureum, another reason was probably the fertilization of the soil with cattle manure.

Despite its ancient use as a therapeutic tool to treat several ailments, acupuncture still faces the challenge of scrutiny by Western science both in terms of its efficacy and in terms of the characterization of its effects and mechanisms of actions underlying these effects. We investigated under well-controlled and carefully characterized conditions the influence of electrical stimulation of acupuncture points ST-36 (Zusanli) and SP-6 (Sanyinjiao) on the myoelectric activity of the small intestine of 38 adult male Wistar rats. Electrical recordings obtained by means of four electrodes chronically implanted in the small intestine were used to assess the effects of acupuncture (electroacupuncture stimulation set at 2 Hz, intermittent stimulation, 1 V, for 30 min). Immobilization of the animals was associated with a consistent decrease (-8 ± 7%) in the myoelectric activity of the small intestine as measured by means of the root mean square. Conversely, acupuncture was able to significantly increase (overshoot) this activity compared to baseline (+44 ± 7%). In contrast, immobilized animals subjected to sham acupuncture had only modest (nonsignificant) increases in myoelectric activity (+9 ± 6%). Using carefully controlled conditions we confirmed previous noncontrolled studies on the ability of acupuncture to alter intestinal motility. The characterization of the topographic and temporal profiles of the effects observed here represents a basis for future dissection of the physiological and pharmacological systems underlying these effects.

Uma investigação fitoquímica das vagens de Prosopis juliflora cultivada na região semi-árida do Estado da Paraíba e monitorada através de testes farmacológicos levou ao isolamento, purificação e identificação do alcalóide principal juliprosopina. A presença de outros constituintes químicos em mistura, tais como juliprosina e juliprosineno, foi verificada na fração dos alcalóides totais através de uma análise do espectro de RMN de 13C. Este trabalho sugere que a toxicidade, observada em animais de laboratório, está quimicamente relacionada com os alcalóides piperidínicos presentes nas vagens desta leguminosa.

A phytochemical investigation of the pods of Prosopis juliflora cultivated in the semi arid region of the State of Paraiba, monitored by pharmacological tests, led to the isolation, purification and identification of its main alkaloid - juliprosopine. The presence of other compounds such as juliprosine and juliprosinene, was observed through analysis of 13C NMR. This work suggests that the toxic activity, observed in laboratory animals, is chemicaly related with the piperidine alkaloids present in the pods of this Leguminosae.
