ABSTRACT Objective A comparative analysis of the association between sedentary behavior versus physical activity levels and tumor staging in women with breast cancer. Methods The present research adopted a cross-sectional study design to recruit a total of 55 adult and elderly women newly diagnosed with breast cancer for data collection and analysis. Inclusion criteria involved patients in procession of a formal approval for participation in the study by the treating physician and those not hitherto subjected to the first cycle of chemotherapy. Results Physical activity levels did not influence the pathological stage of breast cancer (p=0.26) or histological tumor grade (p=0.07) in the analyzed subjects. However, there was a significant association between physical activity levels and responsiveness to hormones (epidermal growth factor receptor (HER2), p<0.05) in the analyzed subjects. Significant difference was detected in the histological tumor grade in relation to the mean time spent sitting during the weekend (p<0.05). However, sedentary behavior had no influence on the tumor stage (p>0.05). Conclusion Physical activity levels did not influence the tumor stage and histological tumor grade. Sedentary behavior had a significant influence on the histological tumor grade.

Abstract BACKGROUND: Sitting time, screen time and low physical activity (PA) levels have been associated with several diseases and all-cause mortality. PA is related to better sleep quality and absence of daytime sleepiness, along with lower risks of obstructive syndrome apnea (OSA). However, studies on the relationship between sitting time, screen time and OSA are scarce in the literature. OBJECTIVE: To analyze associations between PA levels, sitting time, screen time and OSA among adults with suspected sleep disorder. DESIGN AND SETTING: Cross-sectional study conducted at Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein. METHODS: Data were collected from 369 adults with suspected sleep disorders who visited the hospital’s neurophysiology clinic between August 2015 and January 2017. RESULTS: Correlations between hypopnea and PA indicators were demonstrated for total sitting time (0.123; P = 0.019) and total screen time (0.108; P = 0.038). There was also a correlation between latency for rapid-eye-movement sleep (REM_LAT) and total sitting time (0.103; P = 0.047) and a negative correlation between mean oxyhemoglobin saturation (SaO_Avg) and total PA time (-0.103; P = 0.048). There were no associations between PA parameters and apnea-hypopnea index. After adjusting for confounding factors (body mass index, age and gender), sitting time and screen time were not associated with OSA. CONCLUSION: After adjusting for anthropometric and clinical factors, excessive sitting time or screen time was not associated with OSA in adults suspected of sleep disorders. Age, gender, hypertension, body mass index and waist circumference were associated with OSA.

RESUMO Objetivo: Comparar os efeitos de diferentes rotinas de treinamento em medidas de força e hipertrofia muscular. Métodos: Foram distribuídos em dois grupos de treinamento 67 indivíduos não treinados: Rotina Distribuída (n=35), com os grupos musculares treinados duas vezes por semana em uma divisão A/B com oito séries por sessão, ou Rotina de Corpo Inteiro (n=32), com os grupos musculares treinados quatro vezes por semana com quatro e oito séries por sessão de treinamento. Ambos os grupos realizaram de oito a 12 repetições máximas por série, com intervalo de 60 segundos entre as séries. A força e a espessura muscular máximas foram avaliadas no início e após oito semanas de treinamento. Resultados: Observaram-se diferenças significativas considerando o tempo (pré versus pós) para força máxima no supino, agachamento e espessura muscular de extensores do cotovelo, flexores do cotovelo e músculos do quadríceps femoral. Não foram observadas diferenças significativas entre os grupos para nenhum dos parâmetros avaliados. Conclusão: O treinamento de força realizado duas ou quatro vezes por semana com volume de séries equalizado promove adaptações neuromusculares similares.

ABSTRACT Objective: To compare the effects of different resistance training programs on measures of muscle strength and hypertrophy. Methods: Sixty-seven untrained subjects were randomized to one of two groups: Split Workout Routine (n=35), in which muscle groups were trained twice per week in an A/B split consisting of eight sets per session, or Full-Body Workout Routine (n=32), in which muscle groups were trained four times per week with four and eight sets per session. Both groups performed eight to 12 repetition maximum per set, with 60 seconds of rest between sets. Maximal strength and muscle thickness were assessed at baseline and after eight weeks of training. Results: A significant main effect of time (pre versus post) was observed for maximal strength in the bench press and squat exercises and thickness of the elbow extensor, elbow flexor and quadriceps femoris muscles. Selected variables did not differ significantly between groups. Conclusion: Resistance training twice or four times per week has similar effects on neuromuscular adaptation, provided weekly set volume is equal.

OBJECTIVES: Immunosenescence is an age-associated change characterized by a decreased immune response. Although physical activity has been described as fundamental for maintaining the quality of life, few studies have evaluated the effects of different levels of exercise on telomere length in aged populations. The present study aimed to analyze the effects of different levels of physical activity, classified by the Maximal oxygen consumption (VO2 max) values, on the telomere length of memory Cluster of differentiation (CD) CD4+(CD45ROneg and CD45RO+), effector CD8+CD28neg, and CD8+CD28+ T cells in aged individuals. METHODS: Fifty-three healthy elderly men (aged 65-85 years) were included in this study. Their fitness level was classified according to the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) for VO2 max (mL/kg/min). Blood samples were obtained from all participants to analyze the percentage of CD3, CD4, CD8, CD28+, naïve, and subpopulations of memory T cells by using flow cytometry. Furthermore, using the Flow-FISH methodology, the CD4+CD45RO+, CD4+CD45ROneg, CD8+CD28+, and CD8+CD28negT cell telomere lengths were measured. RESULTS: There was a greater proportion of effector memory T CD4+ cells and longer telomeres in CD8+CD28+ T cells in the moderate physical fitness group than in the other groups. There was a higher proportion of terminally differentiated memory effector T cells in the low physical fitness group. CONCLUSION: A moderate physical activity may positively influence the telomere shortening of CD28+CD8+T cells. However, additional studies are necessary to evaluate the importance of this finding with regard to immune function responses in older men.

RESUMO Introdução: A prática de atividade física eleva a temperatura corporal, aumenta a taxa de sudorese e acelera a perda de líquidos durante o exercício, com consequente prejuízo no desempenho do exercício. Entretanto, os estudos que utilizam o método de treinamento intervalado de alta intensidade (HIIT) e seus efeitos sobre as taxas de suor e hidratação ainda não são conclusivos. Objetivos: O objetivo desse estudo consistiu em avaliar a sudorese e a perda de água durante uma sessão de HIIT, utilizando o peso corporal, em universitários saudáveis. Métodos: Vinte indivíduos (31 ± 07 anos) foram distribuídos em dois grupos: grupo ativo (GA) e grupo inativo (GI). O protocolo de HIIT utilizando o peso corporal consistiu em uma única sessão com estímulos 1:1, sendo: 30” com intensidade “all out”, utilizando os exercícios de polichinelo, mountain climber, burpee e squat jump com recuperação passiva de 30”, totalizando 20 minutos de exercícios. Para fins de comparação, após 48 horas todos os indivíduos foram submetidos ao protocolo de exercício contínuo com intensidade correspondente a 75% da frequência cardíaca máxima durante 40 minutos. A intensidade da sessão foi monitorada continuamente, a cada 30”, utilizando a escala de percepção de esforço para ambos protocolos. Para garantir o estado de normoidratação todos os indivíduos ingeriram 500 ml de água, 120 minutos antes da sessão de treinamento. Resultados: Foram encontradas diferenças significativas (p = 0,01) na massa corporal após a realização do protocolo HIIT quando comparada à sessão moderada tanto nos grupos ativos (HIIT: -0,60 ± 0,29 kg, Moderado: -0,26 ± 0,12 kg) como inativos (HIIT: -0,92 ± 0,30 kg, Moderado: -0,26 ± 0,26 kg), no entanto, não foram encontradas diferenças entre os grupos. Os valores absolutos da taxa de sudorese comparados às atividades moderadas e HIIT em uma única sessão tanto nos grupos inativos (Moderado: 10,55 ± 10,59 ml/min, HIIT: 28,90 ± 13,88 ml/min) como ativos (Moderado: 9,60 ± 4,52 ml/min, HIIT: 26,00 ± 15,06 ml/min) foram diferentes entre os tipos de exercício, mas não entre os grupos. Conclusões: A taxa de sudorese é influenciada pela intensidade do exercício, sendo maior após o HIIT do que após sessão de exercício moderada. ABSTRACT Introduction: Physical activity raises body temperature, increases the sweat rate and accelerates fluid loss during exercise, thereby impairing exercise performance. However, studies using the high intensity interval training (HIIT) approach and its effects on rates of perspiration and hydration are still inconclusive. Objectives: The objective of this study was to assess sweating and water loss during an HIIT workout session, using body weight, with healthy college students. Methods: Twenty male individuals (31 ± 07 years) were split into two groups: Active group (AG) and Inactive group (IG). The HIIT workout protocol, using body weight, consisted of a single bout with 1:1 stimuli, being: 30” “all out” intensity, involving jumping jack, mountain climber, burpee and squat jump exercises; and 30” of passive recovery, totaling 20 minutes of exercises. For comparison purposes, after 48 hours all the individuals underwent the continuous running protocol with intensity corresponding to 75% of maximum heart rate for 40 minutes. The intensity of the session was monitored continuously, at each 30”, using the perceived exertion scale for both protocols. To ensure euhydration status, all individuals ingested 500 ml of water 120 minutes before the training session. Results: Significant differences (p= 0.01) were found in body mass after HIIT compared to the Moderate session in both Active (HIIT: -0.60 ± 0.29 kg, Moderate: -0.26 ± 0.12 kg) and Inactive (HIIT: -0.92 ± 0.30 kg, Moderate: -0.26 ± 0.26 kg) groups, however, no differences were found between groups. Absolute sweating rate values comparing moderate and HIIT single bout in Inactive (Moderate: 10.55 ± 10.59 ml/min; HIIT: 28.90 ± 13.88 ml/min) and Active (Moderate: 9.60 ± 4.52 ml/min; HIIT: 26.00 ± 15.06 ml/min) groups were different between types of exercise, but not between groups. Conclusions: The sweating rate is influenced by the intensity of the exercise, being higher after HIIT than after a moderate exercise session. RESUMO Introdução: A fadiga muscular durante as contrações musculares voluntárias é um fenômeno complexo e multifatorial associado a alterações centrais e adaptações do sistema neuromuscular. Objetivo: O objetivo deste estudo é analisar as alterações do pico de torque e dos parâmetros hematológicos em indivíduos saudáveis ativos e inativos depois de realizar um protocolo de fadiga muscular. Métodos: Vinte e um adultos saudáveis do sexo masculino realizaram um protocolo de fadiga muscular (10 séries, 10 repetições de extensão do joelho a 75% do torque isométrico máximo (TIM) a 120ºs-1 e 40 segundos de repouso). Hematócrito (Ht), glóbulos vermelhos (GV) e leucócitos (L) foram analisados antes (A) e depois (D) do teste de fadiga. Resultados: O grupo inativo apresentou deterioração apenas na ação muscular concêntrica (-41 ± 4%) com relação ao grupo ativo (-23 ± 3%). Não foram encontradas diferenças nos parâmetros hematológicos no grupo inativo (Ht, A: 45,00 ± 0,01 vs. D: 47,00 ± 0,01; GV, A: 442 ± 40 vs. D: 487 ± 41; L, A: 7.565 ± 2.878 vs. D: 8.015 ± 4.224) e no grupo ativo (Ht, A: 45,00 ± 0,63 vs. D: 47,00 ± 0,01; GV, A: 477 ± 30 vs. D: 559 ± 37; L, A: 6.418 ± 3.557 vs. D: 6.632 ± 4.460). ABSTRACT Introduction: Muscular fatigue during voluntary muscle contractions is a complex and multifactorial phenomenon associated with central changes and adaptations of the neuromuscular system. Objective: The aim of this study was to analyze the changes in both peak torque and hematological parameters in active and inactive healthy subjects following a muscular fatigue protocol. Methods: Twenty-one healthy adult males performed a muscle fatigue protocol (10 sets, 10 repetitions of knee extension at 75% of the maximal isometric torque (MIT), 120º s-1 and 40 seconds of rest). Hematocrit (Ht), red blood cells (RBC) and leukocytes (L) analysis were evaluated before (B) and after (A) a fatigue test. Results: The inactive group presented impairment only in concentric muscular action of -41±4% in relation to the active (-23±3%) group. No differences were found in hematological parameters in inactive group (Ht, B: 45.00±0.01 vs. A: 47.00±0.01; RBC, B: 442±40 vs. A: 487±41; L, B: 7,565±2,878 vs. A: 8,015±4,224) and the active group (Ht, B: 45.00±0.63 vs. A: 47.00±0.01; RBC, B: 477±30 vs. A: 559±37; L, B: 6,418±3,557 vs. A: 6,632±4,460). Conclusion: Differences were found only in concentric actions between groups. Additionally, there were no relationships found in hematological parameters between groups.

Objetivo: El objetivo de este estudio es analizar los cambios del par máximo y los parámetros hematológicos en sujetos sanos activos e inac-tivos después de un protocolo de fatiga muscular. Métodos: Veintiún adultos sanos del sexo masculino realizaron un protocolo de fatiga muscular (10 series, 10 repeticiones de extensión de la rodilla en el 75% del par isométrico máximo (PIM) a 120ºs-1 y 40 segundos de descanso). Hematocrito (Ht), glóbulos rojos (GR) y leucocitos (L) fueron evaluados antes (A) y después (D) de la prueba de fatiga. Resultados: El grupo inactivo presentó deterioro sólo en la acción muscular concéntrica (-41 ± 4%) con respecto al grupo activo (-23 ± 3%). No se encontraron diferencias en los parámetros hematológicos en el grupo inactivo (Ht, A: 45,00 ± 0.01 vs. D: 47,00 ± 0,01; GR, A: 442 ± 40 vs. D: 487 ± 41; L, A: 7.565 ± 2.878 vs. D: 8.015 ± 4.224) y en el grupo activo (Ht, A: 45,00 ± 0,63 vs. A: 47,00 ± 0,01; GR, A: 477 ± 30 vs. D: 559 ± 37; L, A: 6.418 ± 3.557 vs. D: 6.632 ± 4.460). Objetivo: Avaliar a fadiga induzida por sucessivas extensões intermitentes do joelho entre estudantes universitários ativos e inativos. Métodos: Vinte homens saudáveis (≥ 18 anos) participaram voluntariamente deste estudo. Para determinar a contração isométrica voluntária máxima (CIVM) do grupo muscular extensores do joelho, foi utilizado o valore médio de três contrações isométrias de extensão do joelho, durante cinco segundos, com cinco minutos de intervalo entre as séries. O protocolo de fadiga foi composto por 10 séries de 10 contrações concêntricas máximas sobre os extensores do joelho direito, realizadas a 75% da CIVM com intervalo de 45". Resultados: Reduções significativas (p < 0,01), tanto na força isométrica (-34 ± 4%) quanto na dinâmica (-40 ± 3%). Adicionalmente, a reta da relação força x repetição assumiu inclinação de -0,79 ± 0,07 Nm/repetições e a magnitude do efeito atingiu -8,9. Conclusão: O protocolo foi útil para induzir a fadiga periférica, embora a força muscular seja maior no grupo ativo. Tanto na ação isométrica quanto dinâmica, a fadiga muscular não diferiu entre os grupos.

Introduction: Fatigue during voluntary muscle contractions is a complex and multifactorial phenomenon associated with central changes and adaptations of the neuromuscular system. Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the fatigue induced by intermittent successive extension of the knee between active and inactive university students. Method: Twenty healthy men (≥18 years), voluntarily participated in this study. To determine the maximum voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) of the knee extensors muscle group, three sets of isometric contractions of knee extension were performed for five seconds with five minutes of rest between sets. The fatigue protocol consisted of 10 sets of 10 maximal concentric contractions of the extensor on the right knee, performed at 75% of MVIC with an interval of 45". Results: Significant reductions were observed (p<0.01), both in isometric strength (-34±4%) and the dynamic strength (-40 ± 3%). In addition, the slope of relationship strength x repetition was -0.79±0.07 Nm/repetitions and the magnitude of the effect reached -8.90. Conclusion: The protocol was useful to induce peripheral fatigue, although muscle strength is greater in the active group. In both isometric and dynamic action, muscle fatigue did not differ between groups.

Introducción: La fatiga durante las contracciones musculares voluntarias es un fenómeno complejo y multifactorial, asociado a los cambios centrales y adaptaciones del sistema neuromuscular. Objetivo: Evaluar la fatiga inducida por las extensiones sucesivas intermitentes de la rodilla entre los estudiantes universitarios activos e inactivos. Métodos: Veinte hombres sanos (≥ 18 años) participaron voluntariamente en este estudio. Para determinar la contracción isométrica voluntaria máxima (CIVM) del grupo de los músculos extensores de la rodilla, se realizaron tres contracciones isométricas de extensión de la rodilla, durante cinco segundos, con cinco minutos de descanso entre las series. El CIVM se determinó por la media de los tres intentos. El protocolo de la fatiga consistió en 10 series de 10 contracciones concéntricas máximas del extensor de la rodilla derecha, realizadas en el 75% de CIVM con un intervalo de 45". Resultados: Se observaron reducciones significativas (p < 0,01), tanto en la fuerza isométrica (-34 ± 4%) y la dinámica (-40 ± 3%). Además, la recta de la relación fuerza x repetición presentó inclinación de -0,79 ± 0,07 Nm/repeticiones y la magnitud del efecto alcanzó -8,9. Conclusión: El protocolo fue útil para inducir fatiga periférica, aunque la fuerza muscular es mayor en el grupo activo. En acción isométrica y dinámica, la fatiga muscular no difirió entre los grupos.
