Abstract Epidermolysis Bullosa is a rare hereditary disease with genetic etiology in the vast majority of cases. It is characterized by the formation of blisters and ulcers on the skin or mucosa, caused by trauma or tissue manipulation. This disease has several subtypes, of which the recessive dystrophic is one of the most serious, with significant stomatological manifestations that deserve special attention from the dentist. The objective of this study is to report a clinical case of a 9-year-old patient with recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa, addressing dental treatment with a focus on the particularities of the patient with epidermolysis bullosa

Resumo A epidermólise bolhosa é uma doença rara de caráter hereditário com etiologia genética na grande maioria dos casos. Ela é caracterizada pela formação de bolhas e úlceras na pele ou mucosa, causadas por traumas ou manipulação do tecido. Essa doença possui vários subtipos, sendo o distrófico recessivo um dos mais graves, com manifestações estomatológicas significativas e que merecem atenção especial pelo médico dentista. O objetivo do presente trabalho é relatar um caso clínico de um paciente de 9 anos de idade com epidermólise bolhosa distrófica recessiva, abordando o tratamento odontológico com foco direcionado para as particularidades do paciente com epidermólise bolhosa.

Abstract Hereditary transthyretin amyloidosis with peripheral neuropathy (ATTRv-PN) is an autosomal dominant inherited sensorimotor and autonomic polyneuropathy with over 130 pathogenic variants identified in the TTR gene. Hereditary transthyretin amyloidosis with peripheral neuropathy is a disabling, progressive and life-threatening genetic condition that leads to death in ~ 10 years if untreated. The prospects for ATTRv-PN have changed in the last decades, as it has become a treatable neuropathy. In addition to liver transplantation, initiated in 1990, there are now at least 3 drugs approved in many countries, including Brazil, and many more are being developed. The first Brazilian consensus on ATTRv-PN was held in the city of Fortaleza, Brazil, in June 2017. Given the new advances in the area over the last 5 years, the Peripheral Neuropathy Scientific Department of the Brazilian Academy of Neurology organized a second edition of the consensus. Each panelist was responsible for reviewing the literature and updating a section of the previous paper. Thereafter, the 18 panelists got together virtually after careful review of the draft, discussed each section of the text, and reached a consensus for the final version of the manuscript.

Resumo Polineuropatia amiloidótica familiar associada a transtirretina (ATTRv-PN) é uma polineuropatia sensitivo-motora e autonômica hereditária autossômica dominante com mais de 130 variantes patogênicas já identificadas no gene TTR. A ATTRv-PN é uma condição genética debilitante, progressiva e que ameaça a vida, levando à morte em ~ 10 anos se não for tratada. Nas últimas décadas, a ATTRv-PN se tornou uma neuropatia tratável. Além do transplante de fígado, iniciado em 1990, temos agora 3 medicamentos modificadores de doença aprovados em muitos países, incluindo o Brasil, e muitas outras medicações estão em desenvolvimento. O primeiro consenso brasileiro em ATTRv-PN foi realizado em Fortaleza em junho de 2017. Devido aos novos avanços nesta área nos últimos 5 anos, o Departamento Científico de Neuropatias Periféricas da Academia Brasileira de Neurologia organizou uma segunda edição do consenso. Cada panelista ficou responsável por rever a literatura e atualizar uma parte do manuscrito. Finalmente, os 18 panelistas se reuniram virtualmente após revisão da primeira versão, discutiram cada parte do artigo e chegaram a um consenso sobre a versão final do manuscrito.

ABSTRACT. Unpaid caregivers of people living with dementia tend to suffer mental health problems as a result of the negative effects associated with the care tasks. Thus, psychosocial interventions for this population group are necessary. iSupport is an online support program for caregivers that was created by the World Health Organization. Objective: To describe the design of a randomized clinical trial to measure the efficacy of the iSupport-Brasil version on caregivers’ mental health and well-being. Methods: The participants will be randomized into Intervention Group (IG) (n=195) and Control Group (CG) (n=195). For three months, the IG will access the iSupport-Brasil platform, the CG will enter the electronic page of the Brazilian Alzheimer’s Association, and both groups will be emailed the preliminary version of the “Guia de cuidados para a pessoa idosa” e-book (a guide to providing care to the elderly) from the Ministry of Health. The data will be collected at three moments: baseline, and three and six months after the beginning of the intervention. Results: It is expected that it will be possible to provide diverse validity evidence about iSupport-Brasil as an online and free intervention alternative, as a preventive means and as a way to promote mental health among caregivers of people living with dementia. Conclusion: Through the evaluation protocol of this randomized clinical trial on the effects of the iSupport-Brasil program, it may become a reference for countries that plan to adapt and improve the iSupport program using digital health solutions.

RESUMO. Cuidadores informais de pessoas que vivem com demência tendem a sofrer problemas de saúde mental como resultado dos efeitos negativos associados às tarefas de cuidado. Assim, intervenções psicossociais para essa população são necessárias. O iSupport é um programa de apoio online para cuidadores criado pela Organização Mundial da Saúde. Objetivo: Descrever o desenho de um ensaio clínico randomizado para medir a eficácia da versão iSupport-Brasil na saúde mental e no bem-estar de cuidadores. Métodos: Os participantes serão randomizados em Grupo Intervenção (GI) (n=195) e Grupo Controle (GC) (n=195). Durante três meses, o GI acessará a plataforma iSupport-Brasil, o CG entrará na página eletrônica da Associação Brasileira de Alzheimer e ambos os grupos receberão por e-mail a versão preliminar do e-book Guia de cuidados para a pessoa idosa, do Ministério da Saúde. Os dados serão coletados em três momentos: linha de base, três e seis meses após o início da intervenção. Resultados: Espera-se que seja possível fornecer diversas evidências sobre os efeitos do iSupport-Brasil como alternativa de intervenção online e gratuita, de forma a promover a saúde mental entre os cuidadores de pessoas que vivem com demência. Conclusão: O protocolo de avaliação deste ensaio clínico randomizado sobre os efeitos do programa iSupport-Brasil pode se tornar uma referência para os países que planejam adaptar e melhorar esta intervenção, usando soluções digitais de saúde.

Objective: To evaluate the impact of defense mechanisms at baseline on depressive symptoms after brief psychotherapies and after 6-months of follow-up among depressed patients with and without cluster B personality disorders (PDs). Methods: This quasi-experimental study nested within a randomized clinical trial included a clinical sample of adults (18-60 years) diagnosed with major depressive disorder using the Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview. The Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory-III was applied to assess PD, the Defense Style Questionnaire 40 was used to analyze defense mechanisms, and the Beck Depression Inventory was used to measure the severity of depressive symptoms. Adjusted analysis was performed by linear regression. Results: The final sample consisted of 177 patients diagnosed with major depressive disorder, of whom 39.5% had cluster B PDs. Immature defenses at baseline significantly predicted the persistence of depressive symptoms at post-intervention and at 6-months of follow-up only in patients with PDs. Conclusion: In depressed patients with cluster B PDs, immature defenses predicted a poor response to brief therapies. The assessment of immature defenses at baseline can help identify patients at greater risk of poor therapeutic results and enable more appropriate treatment choices.

Resumen Diversas semillas de oleaginosas son fuente de ácidos grasos esenciales indispensables para cubrir las funciones básicas en el organismo. El estudio tuvo como objetivo evaluar el efecto de la inclusión de semilla de linaza (Linum usitatissimum) en la dieta de conejos por medio del perfil metabólico. Se utilizaron 20 machos de la raza Nueva Zelandia de 8 meses de edad. Distribuidos en cuatro grupos, recibieron niveles de semilla de linaza (L. usitatissimum) en la dieta total: 0 %, 3 %, 6 % y 9 %, durante un período de 88 días. Los animales se sometieron a colecta de sangre cada 22 días para determinar glucosa, colesterol total, lipoproteínas de alta densidad (HDL), triglicéridos, lipoproteínas de muy baja densidad (VLDL), lipoproteínas de baja densidad (LDL), creatinina y urea. Los datos se evaluaron por análisis de varianza y de regresión con 5 % de significancia. La inclusión de semilla de linaza (L. usitatissimum) en la dieta presentó comportamiento cuadrático positivo para concentración plasmática de glucosa y colesterol total. No hubo diferencia significativa entre los tratamientos para la concentración plasmática de triglicéridos, lipoproteínas de baja densidad (LDL), lipoproteínas de muy baja densidad (VLDL) urea. Hubo comportamiento cúbico para lipoproteínas de alta densidad (HDL) y creatinina. La inclusión de linaza (L. usitatissimum) en la dieta no presentó efecto hipercolesterolémico en estos animales.

Abstract Many oilseeds are a source of essentials fatty acids that are necessary for the coverage of the basic functions in the organism. The study aimed to evaluate the effect of flaxseed (Linum usitatissimum) inclusion in the diet of rabbits through the metabolic profile. Twenty males of the New Zealand breed of 8 months were used. Divided in four groups, they received flaxseed (L. usitatissimum) levels in the total diet: 0 %, 3 %, 6 % y 9 %, for a period of 88 days. The animals were subjected to a blood collection every 22 days to determine glucose, total cholesterol, high density lipoprotein (HDL), triglycerides, very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL), low density lipoprotein (LDL), creatinine and urea. The data were evaluated by analysis of variance and regression with 5 % significance. The inclusion of flaxseed (L. usitatissimum) in the rabbit diet showed a positive quadratic effect for plasmatic concentration of glucose and total cholesterol. There was no significant difference between treatments for plasma concentration of triglycerides, low- density lipoproteins (LDL), very low - density lipoproteins (VLDL) and urea. There was a cubic effect for cholesterol- and creatinine. The inclusion of flaxseed (L. usitatissimum) in the diet had hypercholesterolemic effect in these animals.

Resumo Para investigar a influência genética em uma amostra de dentes reimplantados, é necessário observar os fenótipos extremos, como os dentes que sofreram cura funcional e os extraídos devido à reabsorção radicular externa severa. Assim, este estudo teve como objetivo investigar a associação da idade dos pacientes, desenvolvimento radicular dos dentes, assim como o meio de transporte até o reimplante e polimorfismos nos genes da interleucina 4 (IL4) e da interleucina 6 (IL6) com dentes que apresentaram cura funcional ou extração, em um grupo cujas técnicas de reimplante não seguiu a International Association of Dental Traumatology (IADT) 2012. Foram incluídos 43 dentes avulsionados e reimplantados que não seguiram as diretrizes do IADT, e tiveram cura funcional ou foram extraídos. As radiografias periapicais utilizadas para este estudo foram feitas logo após o reimplante dentário e após 1 ano. Para a análise genotípica dos genes IL4 e IL6, foi extraído DNA de células da mucosa oral. PCR em tempo real realizou a análise dos polimorfismos dos genes. As variáveis clínicas e genéticas foram analisadas pelos testes Qui-quadrado e “Z”. Valores de p <0,05 foram considerados significativos. Os resultados mostraram que a cura ou perda dos dentes está associada ao meio de armazenamento e polimorfismos no gene rs2243268 da IL-4. Como conclusão, o alelo C rs2243268 do gene IL4 pode ter uma relação positiva com a cura functional do dente reimplantado. Manter o dente seco está associado a uma perda rápida de dentes avulsionados e reimplantados que não seguiram o IADT 2012.

Abstract To investigate the genetic association in a sample of replanted teeth, it is necessary to observe the extreme phenotypes, such as, teeth that underwent functional healing and those extracted due to severe external root resorption. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the association of age of the patients, root development, storage media, and polymorphisms in the interleukin 4 (IL4) and interleukin 6 (IL6) genes with teeth that presented extreme outcomes, as functional healing or extraction, in a group whose replantation techniques did not follow the International Association of Dental Traumatology (IADT) 2012 guidelines. Forty-three avulsed and replanted teeth that did not follow IADT 2012 guidelines and underwent functional healing or were extracted were included. Periapical radiographs employed for this study were taken soon after tooth replantation and after 1 year. For genotypic IL4 and IL6 genes analysis, DNA of oral mucosa cells was extracted. Real-time- PCR performed for genotyping polymorphisms in IL4 and IL6 genes. Clinical and genetic variables were analyzed by the Chi-square test and the “Z” test. P values < .05 were considered significant. The results showed that functional healing and extraction were associated with storage media and with the rs2243268 of IL- 4 gene polymorphisms. As conclusion, the C rs2243268 allele of IL4 gene may have a positive relationship with functional healing teeth that were replanted not following the 2012 IADT guidelines. Keeping the tooth dry is associated to a fast loss of avulsed and replanted teeth after 1-year follow-up.

Abstract Objective: To provide guidelines on the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination in patients with immune-mediated rheumatic diseases (IMRD) to rheumatologists considering specific scenarios of the daily practice based on the shared-making decision (SMD) process. Methods: A task force was constituted by 24 rheumatologists (panel members), with clinical and research expertise in immunizations and infectious diseases in immunocompromised patients, endorsed by the Brazilian Society of Rheumatology (BSR), to develop guidelines for COVID-19 vaccination in patients with IMRD. A consensus was built through the Delphi method and involved four rounds of anonymous voting, where five options were used to determine the level of agreement (LOA), based on the Likert Scale: (1) strongly disagree; (2) disagree, (3) neither agree nor disagree (neutral); (4) agree; and (5) strongly agree. Nineteen questions were addressed and discussed via teleconference to formulate the answers. In order to identify the relevant data on COVID-19 vaccines, a search with standardized descriptors and synonyms was performed on September 10th, 2021, of the MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, ClinicalTrials.gov, and LILACS to identify studies of interest. We used the Newcastle–Ottawa Scale to assess the quality of nonrandomized studies. Results: All the nineteen questions-answers (Q&A) were approved by the BSR Task Force with more than 80% of panelists voting options 4—agree—and 5—strongly agree—, and a consensus was reached. These Guidelines were focused in SMD on the most appropriate timing for IMRD patients to get vaccinated to reach the adequate covid-19 vaccination response. Conclusion: These guidelines were developed by a BSR Task Force with a high LOA among panelists, based on the literature review of published studies and expert opinion for COVID-19 vaccination in IMRD patients. RESUMO Objetivos: analisar a tendência temporal da mortalidade por anemia falciforme no Brasil, por regiões, no período compreendido entre 1997 e 2017. Métodos: estudo epidemiológico, de delineamento ecológico, de tendência temporal, realizado com dados do Sistema de Informações sobre Mortalidade. Para análise descritiva, utilizaram-se frequências absolutas e relativas. Na análise de correlação, utilizou-se o teste ANOVA seguido pelo pós-teste de Tukey. A tendência temporal foi obtida mediante o teste de regressão polinomial cúbico. Resultados: foram registrados 6.813 óbitos por anemia falciforme. Indivíduos pardos (50,87%) foram mais frequentes, com predomínio do sexo masculino (50,4%), com faixa etária de 25 a 34 anos e maior incidência de óbitos no Centro-Oeste (0,25/100 mil habitantes). A curva temporal apresentou tendência crescente de óbitos no país entre 1997 a 2015 (R2 = 0,98). Conclusões: a anemia falciforme apresentou mortalidade crescente nos 21 anos analisados e desperta o alerta aos profissionais de saúde e gestores.

ABSTRACT Objectives: To analyze the temporal trend of mortality from sickle cell anemia in Brazil, by region, in the period 1997-2017. Methods: epidemiological study, with an ecological design, with a temporal trend, carried out with data from the Mortality Information System. For descriptive analysis, absolute and relative frequencies were used. In the correlation analysis, the ANOVA test was used, followed by Tukey’s post-test. The temporal trend was obtained using the cubic polynomial regression test. Results: 6,813 deaths from sickle cell anemia were registered. Brown individuals (50.87%) were more frequent, with a predominance of males (50.4%), aged between 25 and 34 years and a higher incidence of deaths in the Midwest (0.25/100 thousand inhabitants). The time curve showed an increasing trend of deaths in the country between 1997 and 2015 (R2 = 0.98). Conclusions: sickle cell anemia showed increasing mortality in the 21 years analyzed and alerts health professionals and managers.

Conclusiones: la anemia falciforme presentó mortalidad creciente en los 21 años analizados y despierta el alerta a profesionales de salud y gestores.

This study aimed to estimate prevalence of loneliness among older Brazilian adults over the first seven months of the COVID-19 pandemic and to identify the predictors of loneliness trajectories. Pre-pandemic data derived from face-to-face interviews of participants of the 2019-2020 Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Aging (ELSI-Brazil), which is a nationally representative study of community-dwelling individuals aged 50 years and over. Pandemic data were based on three rounds of telephone interviews among those participants, conducted from May to October 2020. Loneliness was measured by a single-item question, considering those who had at least two repeated measures. Explanatory variables included depression, living alone, leaving home in the last week, and virtual connectedness in the last month. Mixed-effects logistic regression was used to estimate odds ratios with their 95% confidence intervals (95%CI) and to investigate loneliness trajectories and their predictors. In total, 5,108 participants were included. The overall prevalence of loneliness in the pre-pandemic period was 33.1% (95%CI: 29.4-36.8), higher than the pandemic period (round 1: 23.6%, 95%CI: 20.6-26.9; round 2: 20.5%, 95%CI: 17.8-23.5; round 3: 20.6%, 95%CI: 17.1-24.6). A significant interaction (p ≤ 0.05) was evidenced only between depression and time; participants with depression showed a greater reduction in loneliness levels. Although loneliness levels in Brazil have decreased during the pandemic, this pattern is not present for all older adults. Individuals with depression had a more significant reduction, probably due to feeling closer to their social network members during the stay-at-home recommendations.

Este estudo teve como objetivo estimar a prevalência de solidão entre idosos brasileiros nos primeiros sete meses da pandemia de COVID-19 e identificar os preditores das trajetórias de solidão, usando dados pré-pandemia oriundos de entrevistas presenciais de participantes do Estudo Longitudinal da Saúde dos Idosos Brasileiros (ELSI-Brasil) de 2019-2020, um estudo de representatividade nacional com residentes da comunidade com 50 anos ou mais. Os dados durante a pandemia foram coletados em três rodadas de entrevistas telefônicas com os participantes, realizadas de maio a outubro de 2020. A solidão foi medida por uma questão de item único, considerando os casos com pelo menos duas medidas repetidas. As variáveis explicativas incluíram depressão, morar sozinho, sair de casa na última semana e conexão virtual no último mês. A regressão logística de efeitos mistos foi utilizada para estimar as razões de chances com seus intervalos de 95% de confiança (IC95%) e investigar trajetórias de solidão e seus preditores. Foram incluídos 5.108 participantes. A prevalência global de solidão no período pré-pandemia foi de 33,1% (IC95%: 29,4-36,8), um valor superior ao período pandêmico (rodada 1: 23,6%, IC95%: 20,6-26,9; rodada 2: 20,5%, IC95%: 17,8-23,5; rodada 3: 20,6%, IC95%: 17,1-24,6). Uma interação significativa (p ≤ 0,05) foi encontrada apenas entre depressão e tempo; participantes com depressão apresentaram maior redução dos níveis de solidão. Embora os níveis de solidão no Brasil tenham diminuído durante a pandemia, esse padrão não se aplica a todos os idosos. Indivíduos com depressão tiveram uma redução mais significativa provavelmente por se sentirem mais próximos aos membros de suas redes sociais durante as recomendações de ficar em casa.

Este estudio tuvo como objetivo estimar la prevalencia de la soledad entre los adultos mayores brasileños durante los primeros siete meses de la pandemia de COVID-19 e identificar los predictores de las trayectorias de la soledad. Los datos prepandémicos proceden de entrevistas cara a cara de los participantes del Estudio Longitudinal Brasileño sobre el Envejecimiento (ELSI-Brasil) de 2019-2020, que es un estudio nacionalmente representativo de los habitantes de la comunidad de 50 años o más. Los datos de la pandemia se basaron en tres rondas de entrevistas telefónicas entre esos participantes, realizadas de mayo a octubre de 2020. La soledad se midió con una pregunta de un solo ítem, teniendo en cuenta los que tenían al menos dos indicativos repetidos. Las variables explicativas incluían la depresión, el hecho de vivir solo, salir de casa en la última semana y la conexión virtual en el último mes. Se utilizó una regresión logística de efectos mixtos para estimar las odds ratios con sus intervalos del 95% de confianza (IC95%) y para investigar las trayectorias de la soledad y sus predictores. Se incluyeron 5.108 participantes. La prevalencia global de la soledad en el periodo prepandémico fue del 33,1% (IC95%: 29,4-36,8), superior a la del periodo pandémico (ronda 1: 23,6%, IC95%: 20,6-26,9; ronda 2: 20,5%, IC95%: 17,8-23,5, ronda 3: 20,6; IC95%: 17,1-24,6). Sólo se evidenció una interacción significativa (p ≤ 0,05) entre la depresión y el tiempo; los participantes con depresión mostraron una mayor reducción de los niveles de soledad. Aunque los niveles de soledad en Brasil han disminuido durante la pandemia, este patrón no se da en todos los adultos mayores. Aquellos individuos con depresión tuvieron una reducción más significativa, probablemente debido a que se sintieron más cerca de los miembros de su red social durante las recomendaciones de quedarse en casa.

RESUMO Objetivo: Avaliar se a qualidade da dieta e seus componentes estão associados ao desenvolvimento de câncer de mama. Métodos: Trata-se de estudo caso-controle com a participação de 332 mulheres, sendo 114 casos e 218 controles. Os grupos foram pareados por idade, índice de massa corporal e estado menopausal. A qualidade da dieta foi avaliada pelo Índice de Qualidade da Dieta Revisado (IQD-R) e seus componentes. O consumo alimentar foi mensurado por meio da aplicação de três recordatórios alimentares de 24 horas e analisados no software NDS-R. Foi realizada regressão logística ajustada, estimativa de odds ratio (OR) e intervalo de confiança de 95% (IC95%), com valor de p<0,05. Resultados: A pontuação do IQD-R, classificada em quartis, não diferiu entre os grupos no quartil inferior de qualidade da dieta (p=0,853). Os componentes cereais totais (p=0,038), gordura saturada (p=0,039) e Gord_AA (gordura, álcool e açúcar de adição) (p=0,023) tiveram maior pontuação no grupo caso. Já a pontuação de frutas totais (p=0,010) e leites e derivados (p=0,039) foi maior no grupo controle. Os componentes do IQD-R, assim como a qualidade da dieta, não se associaram ao desfecho investigado. Conclusão: A qualidade da dieta, avaliada pelo IQD-R e os seus componentes, não se associou ao câncer de mama.

ABSTRACT Objective: To investigate if the diet quality and its components are associated with breast cancer risk. Methods: A case-control study was conducted with 332 women, 114 who were diagnosed with breast cancer, and 218 control individuals. Groups were matched for age, body mass index, and menopausal status. The quality of diet was assessed using Brazilian Healthy Eating Index Revised (BHEI-R) and its components. Food consumption was measured through three 24-h dietary recalls and assessed using the NDS-R software. For statistical analyses, it was performed an adjusted logistic regression, estimation of the Odds Ratio (OR), and 95% confidence interval (95%CI), with a p-value <0.05. Results: The BHEI-R score, classified into quartiles, did not differ between groups in the lowest quartile of diet quality (p=0.853). The components total cereals (p=0.038), saturated fat (p=0.039) and Gord_AA (fat, alcohol, and added sugar) (p=0.023) had higher scores among the case group. The scores for total fruits (p=0.010) and milk and dairy products (p=0.039) were higher among the control group. The BHEI-R components and the quality of diet were not associated with the outcome. Conclusion: Diet quality, assessed by the BHEI-R and its components, was not associated with breast cancer.

Background: A population study is an important tool that can be used to understand the actual epidemiological scenario of the Covid-19 in different territories, identify its magnitude, understand its transmission dynamics, and its demographic, geographical, and social distribution. Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and dynamics of SARS-CoV-2 infection in the population of two Brazilian cities during the pandemic first wave and subsequent socioeconomic and health effects. Materials & methods: This paper described the methodological procedures adopted and the prevalence of the SARS-CoV-2 infection in the population. A household survey was conducted between October and December 2020, in two historic cities of Brazil's mining region. Anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibody was detected using the Wondfo® rapid test. The face-to-face interview consisted of administration of a questionnaire containing registration data, sociodemographic and economic variables, living habits, general health condition, mental health, sleep habits, and eating and nutrition. Results: We evaluated 1,762 residents, of which 764 (43.4%) were in Mariana and 998 (56.6%) in Ouro Preto. For both cities, 51.9% of the interviewees were female, with a predominance of the age range 35 to 59 years old (47.2%). The prevalence of the SARS-CoV-2 infection was 5.5% in all cities, 6.2% in Ouro Preto, and 4.7% in Mariana. The prevalence was similar between cities (P>0.05). Conclusion: The study was effective in verifying the seroprevalence of infection by the virus and its findings will enable further analyses of the health conditions of the population related to social isolation and the risk of infection with SARS-CoV-2.

Abstract INTRODUCTION: Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) is a demyelinating disease of the central nervous system caused by reactivation of JC virus (JCV). METHODS: We described the profile of laboratory-confirmed PML cases among AIDS patients. RESULTS: A total of 43 HIV patients with clinical conditions compatible with PML were obtained; 5 cases were confirmed by JCV testing. The main clinical finding was mental confusion. Median CD4 count was 54 cells/mm³. CONCLUSIONS: Three of the five confirmed PML cases died; the time between diagnosis and death was 2, 5, and 6 months. It is important to consider JCV infection as a differential diagnosis.
