ABSTRACT: Sorghum breeding programs are based predominantly on developing homozygous lines to produce single cross hybrids, frequently with relatively narrow genetic bases. The adoption of complementary strategies, such as genetic diversity study, enables a broader vision of the genetic structure of the breeding germplasm. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the genetic diversity of sorghum breeding lines using structure analysis, principal components (PC) and clustering analyses. A total of 160 sorghum lines were genotyped with 29,649 SNP markers generated by genotyping-by-sequencing (GBS). The PC and clustering analyses consistently divided the R (restorer) and B (maintainer) lines based on their pedigree, generating four groups. Thirty-two B and 21 R lines were used to generate 121 single-cross hybrids, whose performances were compared based on the diversity clustering of each parental line. The genetic divergence of B and R lines indicated a potential for increasing heterotic response in the development of hybrids. The genetic distance was correlated to heterosis, allowing for the use of markers to create heterotic groups in sorghum.

RESUMO A escolha do germoplasma é uma das fases mais importantes do programa de melhoramento genético do milho pois é o início do desenvolvimento de híbridos superiores. Em vista disso, os objetivos deste estudo foi obter as estimativas de m+a e d, e a depressão por endogamia para as características produtividade de grãos e altura de plantas, e assim predizer o potencial dos híbridos de milho para extração de linhagens. Foram testadas as gerações F1 e F2 de 12 híbridos de milho, em dois locais durante os anos agrícolas de 2017/18 e 2018/19, contabilizando quatro ambientes. As duas gerações, F1 e F2, foram avaliadas em experimentos contíguos no delineamento de blocos casualizados, com três e duas repetições durante os anos 2017/18 e 2018/19, respectivamente. Foram coletados dados de altura de plantas e produtividade de grãos por parcela das duas gerações, e a partir destes dados, foram estimados os componentes de média, m+a e d, para ambas características. Para o caráter produtividade de grãos, os efeitos de dominância apresentaram maior importância. Os híbridos mais promissores para extração de linhagens foram AG1051, AG8025, BG7046, DKB455 e OMEGA uma vez que apresentaram maiores estimativas de m+a. Destacando-se os híbridos AG8025 e BG7046 os quais mostraram altos valores de m+a, além de médias de produtividade elevadas. Para o caráter altura de plantas, houve maior contribuição dos efeitos aditivos. Portanto, observou-se maior depressão por endogamia para o caráter produtividade de grãos quando comparado com altura de plantas.

ABSTRACT The choice of germplasm is one of the most important phases of a genetic improvement program to the fact that it is the initial development stage of superior hybrids. Hence, the objectives of this study were to obtain the estimates of m+a and d, and inbreeding depression for grain yield and plant height traits, for cultivars lacking this information, and thus to predict the potential of maize hybrids for the extraction of lines. The F1 and F2 generations of 12 maize hybrids were tested at two sites, during the crop years of 2017-18 and 2018-19, accounting for four environments. Both the generations were evaluated in contiguous experiments in randomized blocks design with three and two repetitions during the years 2017-18 and 2018-19, respectively. The data on plant height and grain yield were collected, per plot, from both the generations, utilizing which, the m+a and d mean components were estimated. The effects of dominance had greater importance for the character grain yield. The most promising hybrids for extraction of lines were AG1051, AG8025, BG7046, DKB455, and OMEGA due to their greater estimates of m+a. The hybrids AG8025 and BG7046 were associated with high values of m+a and grain yield. For the plant height trait, there was a greater contribution of additive effects. Therefore, greater inbreeding depression was observed for the grain yield trait when compared to the height of the plant.

Abstract Water deficit stress is the abiotic factor with the highest impact on crop yield. The objective of this study was to evaluate grain yield (GY), the anthesis-silking interval (ASI) and drought tolerance indices in maize hybrids. We evaluated GY and the ASI of 86 hybrids under two moisture levels (normal irrigation and water stress) for three consecutive years. The stress susceptibility index, water stress tolerance, drought resistance coefficient, drought resistance index, stress tolerance index and harmonic mean were evaluated. There were significant hybrid x environment interactions for GY and the ASI. Differences in the ASI among environments ranged from 0 to 5 days. The hybrids P3862, 1I873, 1I923, 1I862 and 1J1211 showed high GY, associated with the highest drought tolerance indices. The stress tolerance index and harmonic mean indices can be used to identify higher-yielding maize hybrids in environments with and without water restriction.

Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi comparar ganhos genéticos obtidos por diferentes índices de seleção aplicados a múltiplos caracteres agronômicos de sorgo-sacarino (Sorghum bicolor). Foram feitas avaliações de 189 progênies F5 e sete testemunhas, em delineamento de blocos incompletos, com três repetições. Mensuraram-se os caracteres produtividade de matéria verde, teor de sólidos solúveis totais, extração de caldo, teor de sacarose no caldo e sólidos solúveis totais por hectare. Analisaram-se os índices de soma de postos de Mulamba e Mock (ou índice de ranks), da soma dos valores padronizados (ou índice Z), índice padronizado pela média e índice padronizado pela média modificado. As correlações e as percentagens de coincidência na seleção das progênies foram elevadas entre o índice Z, o índice padronizado pela média e o índice padronizado pela média modificado. Entre os índices de seleção testados, o de soma de postos de Mulamba e Mock foi o menos eficiente. A seleção simultânea de progênies de sorgo-sacarino permite ganhos genéticos expressivos para todos os caracteres mensurados.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to compare the genetic gains obtained by different selection indices applied to various agronomic traits of sweet sorghum (Sorghum bicolor). Evaluations were carried out for 189 F5 progenies and seven controls, in an incomplete block design, with three replicates. The measured traits were green matter yield, content of total soluble solids, juice extraction, sucrose content in juice, and total soluble solids per hectare. The rank summation index of Mulamba and Mock (or index of ranks), standardized value summation index (or Z index), standardized by the mean index, and the modified standardized by the mean index were analyzed. The correlations and coincidence percentages in the progeny selections were high between the Z index, the standardized by the mean index, and the modified standardized by the mean index. Among the tested selection indices, the rank summation index of Mulamba and Mock was the less efficient. The simultaneous selection of sweet sorghum progenies allows expressive genetic gains for all measured traits.

RESUMO: O sorgo biomassa é uma das culturas mais promissoras para a produção de energia elétrica, através da queima da planta inteira em caldeiras de alta pressão, devido ao seu alto poder calorífico, alta produtividade, propagação por sementes, ciclo curto e por possibilitar mecanização completa de seus processos agrícolas. Contudo, ainda há uma carência de informações acerca do seu manejo cultural. Para tanto, esta pesquisa objetivou avaliar a influência do espaçamento entrelinhas e da população de plantas no desempenho produtivo do sorgo biomassa. Os experimentos foram instalados em Sete Lagoas/MG, na Embrapa Milho e Sorgo, durante duas safras consecutivas. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi em blocos ao acaso, em esquema fatorial 4 x 4, sendo 4 espaçamentos entrelinhas (0,5; 0,7; 0,9 e 1,1m) e 4 populações de plantas (80.000; 100.000; 120.000 e 140.000 plantas ha-1) e utilizadas três repetições. As características avaliadas foram: altura da planta, diâmetro do colmo, número de folhas, número de perfilhos por planta, massa fresca por planta e biomassa total por área cultivada. A produtividade de biomassa total foi influenciada pelo espaçamento entrelinhas, apresentando uma forte redução com o aumento do espaçamento entrelinhas para os dois anos de estudos, passando de 180,27 para 114,42t ha-1, na safra 2012/13, e de 146,50 para 102,56t ha-1, na safra 2013/14, para espaçamentos entrelinhas de 0,5 e 1,1m, respectivamente. As menores produtividades observadas no segundo ano de estudo foram devido às condições climáticas desfavoráveis no período.

ABSTRACT: Biomass sorghum is one of the most promising crops for the production of electricity through the burning in high-pressure boilers, due to its high calorific value, high yield, seed propagation, short cycle, and to the possibility of full mechanization of its agricultural processes. However, there is still a lack of information about its cultural practices. To this end, this research aimed to evaluate the influence of row spacing and plant population on the yield performance of biomass sorghum. The experimental design was a randomized block, in factorial scheme of 4 x 4, with four row spacings (0.5, 0.7, 0.9 and 1.1m), and four plant populations (80,000; 100,000; 120,000 and 140,000 plants ha-1), with three replications. The characteristics evaluated were: plant height, stem diameter, number of leaves, number of tillers per plant, fresh weight per plant and biomass. Total biomass yield was greatly influenced by the row spacing, showing a sharp reduction when row spacing increased, in the two years of study, changing from 180.27 to 114.42t ha-1 in the 2012/13 crop year, and from 146.50 to 102.56t ha-1 in the 2013/14 crop year, for 0.5 and 1.1m between rows, respectively. The lowest yields observed in the second year of the study were due to unfavorable weather conditions in the period.

RESUMO O sorgo sacarino [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] se destaca como cultura complementar à cana-de-açúcar Saccharum spp. na produção de etanol, uma vez que este possui colmos suculentos com presença de açúcares diretamente fermentescíveis. Em decorrência deste fato, existe a necessidade de se analisar as propriedades do sorgo, a fim de atender às demandas da agroindústria. No presente trabalho, buscou-se desenvolver e estudar as curvas de maturação de sete cultivares de sorgo sacarino em dez épocas de colheita. Os resultados mostram que houve diferença significativa para cultivares e épocas de colheita para todos os parâmetros (p≤0,01). Quanto aos teores de açúcares, as cultivares BRS508, XBWS80147 e CMSXS629 apresentaram as maiores médias para as variáveis açúcares redutores totais (ART) e açúcares totais recuperáveis (ATR). Em relação à produção de etanol por tonelada de biomassa, as cultivares BRS 508 e a CMSXS629 apresentaram os melhores resultados.

ABSTRACT Sweet sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] stands out as a complementary crop to sugarcane Saccharum spp. for the production of ethanol, since it has juicy stems with directly fermentable sugars. Due to this fact, there is a need for the analysis of sweet sorghum properties in order to meet the agro-industry demand. This work aimed to develop and study the maturation curves of seven sweet sorghum cultivars in ten harvest dates. The results showed a significant difference between cultivars and harvest dates for all parameters analysed (p≤0.01). Regarding the sugar content, the cultivars BRS508, XBWS80147 and CMSX629 showed the highest means for the total reducing sugars (TRS) and recoverable sugar (RS). In the production of ethanol per tonne of biomass (EP), the cultivars BRS508 and CMSX629 presented the best results.

A magnitude do erro experimental tem efeito direto no sucesso de experimentos, no melhoramento de plantas. Este trabalho objetivou verificar a interferência de métodos de correção de estande na produtividade de 25 híbridos de sorgo granífero, em sete ambientes. Os métodos avaliados foram: sem correção, regra de três, covariância de estande médio e de estande ideal, Zuber, Cruz, Vencovsky & Cruz e correção estratificada, com base no agrupamento de genótipos. O coeficiente de correlação de Pearson foi utilizado para verificar a magnitude da influência de cada método, em relação aos dados sem correção. Os métodos de correção de estande baseados em covariância e de Vencovsky & Cruz reduziram o coeficiente de variação e apresentaram alta correlação com parâmetros de adaptabilidade e estabilidade dos híbridos, no entanto, estas diferenças não foram expressivas a ponto de justificarem a correção.

The magnitute of the experimental error has a direct effect on the success of plant breeding experiments. This study aimed at evaluating the interference of stand correction methods on the yield of 25 grain sorghum hybrids, in seven environments. The methods tested were: without correction, rule of three, covariance of medium and ideal stand, Zuber, Cruz, Vencovsky & Cruz and stratified correction, based on genotype groups. The Pearson correlation coefficient was used to assess the magnitude of the influence exerted by each method, concerning the data without correction. The stand correction methods based on covariance and Vencovsky & Cruz reduced the coefficient of variation and showed a high correlation with the adaptability and stability parameters of hybrids, however, these differences were not so significant to justify such adjustment.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi estimar a capacidade combinatória de 58 linhagens parentais de sorgo previamente selecionadas para tolerância ao Alumínio (Al). Cento e sessenta e cinco híbridos obtidos a partir do cruzamento destas linhagens foram avaliados em três níveis de saturação de Al. A saturação de Al reduziu a altura das plantas de sorgo, mas não alterou a data de florescimento dos híbridos. A Capacidade Geral de Combinação (CGC) das linhagens fêmeas foi significativa para todas as características. A CGC dos machos foi significativa somente para altura de plantas. A Capacidade Específica de Combinação (CEC) foi significativa somente para dias para florescimento. As linhagens com maior CGC para produção de grãos foram F7, F14, F17, F20, F21, F24, F29, F31, F41, F42, F48, F51, F54, e F55, sendo que F29, F48 e F51 também contribuíram para reduzir a data de florescimento dos híbridos. M2 foi a melhor linhagem-macho.

The purpose of this study was to estimate combining ability of 58 sorghum lines previously selected for Aluminum (Al) tolerance. One hundred sixty-five hybrids were evaluated at three levels of Al saturation (0%, 20% and 50%) at the same season. General Combining Ability (GCA) effects were significant for female lines for all three traits. GCA effects for male lines were significant only for plant height. Specific Combining Ability (SCA) effects were significant only for flowering time. The ratio GCA to SCA was greater than the unity, indicating the prevalence of additive effects for the control of Al tolerance. F7, F14, F17, F20, F21, F24, F29, F31, F41, F42, F48, F51, F54 and F55 lines contributed to increase yield, while F29, F48 and F51 also contributed to reduce flowering time. M2 was the best male line since it contributed to increase yield and plant height, and to reduce flowering time.

O objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar a adaptabilidade e estabilidade fenotípica de 25 cultivares de sorgo sacarino da Embrapa Milho e Sorgo. Os experimentos foram conduzidos em cinco ambientes, três no Estado de Minas Gerais e os demais nas cidades de Sinop - MT e Pelotas - RS, no delineamento em blocos ao acaso, com três repetições. Foram avaliados a produção de biomassa fresca (PBF) e o teor de sólidos solúveis totais (SST) do caldo. Na análise de variância conjunta, a interação genótipos com ambientes foi significativa para os dois caracteres avaliados. Para análise da adaptabilidade e estabilidade, utilizou-se o método de Annicchiarico. Os genótipos CMSXS634, BRS506 e CMSXS646 foram os mais adaptados e estáveis para PBF e SST concomitantemente, sendo CMSXS634 mais adaptado a ambientes favoráveis e CMSXS646 a ambientes desfavoráveis.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the phenotypic stability and adaptability of 25 sweet sorghum cultivars of Embrapa Maize and Sorghum. The experiments were conducted in five Brazilian environments, three in the state of Minas Gerais, and the others in Sinop, Mato Grosso and Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul. Fresh biomass yield (FBY), and total soluble solids (TSS) of the juice were evaluated in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Analysis of variance showed significant genotype by environment interaction for both traits. According to the Annicchiarico methodology analysis, genotypes CMSXS634, BRS506, and CMSXS646 were the most stable and adapted for FBY and TSS concomitantly; CMSXS634 being more adapted to favorable environments and CMSXS646 being more adapted to unfavorable environments.
