Abstract Among the potential feed additives, β-glucans are known to positively affect the growth performance, blood parameters, and intestinal microbiota of fish, even the ornamental species. Therefore, the present study evaluated the effects of the dietary supplementation of different Saccharomyces cerevisiae β-glucans concentrations (0, 0.05, 0.1, and 0.2%) in juvenile angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare) over a 42-day period. Regarding growth performance, no effects were observed on most parameters. However, 0.2% β-glucans supplementation produced higher condition factor values, indicating a better nutritional status. Furthermore, β-glucans supplementation did not affect blood parameters. Regarding intestinal microbiota, β-glucans supplementation increased the abundance of the potentially beneficial bacterial genus Phascolarctobacterium. The high abundance of bacteria from the phylum Bacteroidetes, which can degrade β-glucans, may be attributed to the increased abundance of Phascolarctobacterium spp. In addition, 0.2% β-glucans supplementation produced more operational taxonomic units and higher Sobs (observed species richness), indicating effects on the overall bacterial community structure. These results demonstrate the potential application of β-glucans as a dietary supplement to improve the performance and modulate the intestinal microbiota of angelfish. additives βglucans β glucans parameters fish Therefore 0, 0 (0 005 05 0.05 01 1 0.1 02 2 Pterophyllum scalare 42day day 42 period However 0.2 values status Furthermore Bacteroidetes βglucans, glucans, spp addition richness, richness , richness) structure ( 00 0.0 0. 4

ABSTRACT The limited temporal completeness and taxonomic accuracy of species lists, made available in a traditional manner in scientific publications, has always represented a problem. These lists are invariably limited to a few taxonomic groups and do not represent up-to-date knowledge of all species and classifications. In this context, the Brazilian megadiverse fauna is no exception, and the Catálogo Taxonômico da Fauna do Brasil (CTFB) (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/), made public in 2015, represents a database on biodiversity anchored on a list of valid and expertly recognized scientific names of animals in Brazil. The CTFB is updated in near real time by a team of more than 800 specialists. By January 1, 2024, the CTFB compiled 133,691 nominal species, with 125,138 that were considered valid. Most of the valid species were arthropods (82.3%, with more than 102,000 species) and chordates (7.69%, with over 11,000 species). These taxa were followed by a cluster composed of Mollusca (3,567 species), Platyhelminthes (2,292 species), Annelida (1,833 species), and Nematoda (1,447 species). All remaining groups had less than 1,000 species reported in Brazil, with Cnidaria (831 species), Porifera (628 species), Rotifera (606 species), and Bryozoa (520 species) representing those with more than 500 species. Analysis of the CTFB database can facilitate and direct efforts towards the discovery of new species in Brazil, but it is also fundamental in providing the best available list of valid nominal species to users, including those in science, health, conservation efforts, and any initiative involving animals. The importance of the CTFB is evidenced by the elevated number of citations in the scientific literature in diverse areas of biology, law, anthropology, education, forensic science, and veterinary science, among others. publications problem uptodate up date classifications context exception (CTFB http//fauna.jbrj.gov.br/, httpfaunajbrjgovbr http //fauna.jbrj.gov.br/ , jbrj gov br (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/) 2015 Brazil 80 specialists 1 2024 133691 133 691 133,69 125138 125 138 125,13 82.3%, 823 82 3 (82.3% 102000 102 000 102,00 7.69%, 769 7 69 (7.69% 11000 11 11,00 . 3,567 3567 567 (3,56 2,292 2292 2 292 (2,29 1,833 1833 833 (1,83 1,447 1447 447 (1,44 1000 1,00 831 (83 628 (62 606 (60 520 (52 50 users science health biology law anthropology education others http//fauna.jbrj.gov.br/ faunajbrjgovbr //fauna.jbrj.gov.br (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/ 201 8 202 13369 13 133,6 12513 12 125,1 82.3% (82.3 10200 10 00 102,0 7.69% 76 6 (7.69 1100 11,0 3,56 356 56 (3,5 2,29 229 29 (2,2 1,83 183 83 (1,8 1,44 144 44 (1,4 100 1,0 (8 62 (6 60 52 (5 5 http//fauna.jbrj.gov.br (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br 20 1336 133, 1251 125, 82.3 (82. 1020 0 102, 7.69 (7.6 110 11, 3,5 35 (3, 2,2 22 (2, 1,8 18 (1, 1,4 14 4 ( 82. Abstract Background Most of the evidence about the impact of the post-acute COVID-19 Syndrome (PACS) reports individual symptoms without correlations with related imaging. Objectives To evaluate cardiopulmonary symptoms, their predictors and related images in COVID-19 patients discharged from hospital. Methods Consecutive patients who survived COVID-19 were contacted 90 days after discharge. The Clinic Outcome Team structured a questionnaire evaluating symptoms and clinical status (blinded for hospitalization data). A multivariate analysis was performed to address the course of COVID-19, comorbidities, anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress during hospitalization, and cardiac rehabilitation after discharge. The significance level was set at 5%. Results A total of 480 discharged patients with COVID-19 (age: 59±14 years, 67.5% males) were included; 22.3% required mechanical ventilation. The prevalence of patients with PACS-related cardiopulmonary symptoms (dyspnea, tiredness/fatigue, cough, and chest discomfort) was 16.3%. Several parameters of chest computed tomography and echocardiogram were similar in patients with and without cardiopulmonary symptoms. The multivariate analysis showed that PACS-related cardiopulmonary-symptoms were independently related to female sex (OR 3.023; 95% CI 1.319-6.929), in-hospital deep venous thrombosis (OR 13.689; 95% CI 1.069-175.304), elevated troponin I (OR 1.355; 95% CI 1.048-1.751) and C-reactive protein during hospitalization (OR 1.060; 95% CI 1.023-1.097) and depression (OR 6.110; 95% CI 2.254-16.558). Conclusion PACS-related cardiopulmonary symptoms 90 days post-discharge are common and multifactorial. Beyond thrombotic and markers of inflammation/myocardial injury during hospitalization, female sex and depression were independently associated with cardiopulmonary-related PACS. These results highlighted the need for a multifaceted approach targeting susceptible patients. postacute post acute COVID19 COVID 19 COVID-1 PACS (PACS imaging hospital 9 discharge blinded data. data . data) COVID19, 19, comorbidities anxiety posttraumatic traumatic 5 5% 48 age (age 5914 59 14 59±1 years 675 67 67.5 males included 223 22 3 22.3 ventilation PACSrelated dyspnea, dyspnea (dyspnea tirednessfatigue tiredness fatigue tiredness/fatigue cough discomfort 163 16 16.3% cardiopulmonarysymptoms OR 3.023 3023 023 95 1.3196.929, 13196929 1.319 6.929 , 1 319 6 929 1.319-6.929) inhospital 13.689 13689 13 689 1.069175.304, 1069175304 1.069 175.304 069 175 304 1.069-175.304) 1.355 1355 355 1.0481.751 10481751 1.048 1.751 048 751 1.048-1.751 Creactive C reactive 1.060 1060 060 1.0231.097 10231097 1.023 1.097 097 1.023-1.097 6.110 6110 110 2.25416.558. 225416558 2.254 16.558 2 254 558 2.254-16.558) postdischarge multifactorial inflammationmyocardial inflammation myocardial cardiopulmonaryrelated COVID1 COVID- 4 591 59± 67. 22. 16.3 3.02 302 02 3196 1.3196.929 1319692 1319 1.31 6929 6.92 31 92 1.319-6.929 13.68 1368 68 069175 1.069175.304 106917530 1069 1.06 175304 175.30 06 17 30 1.069-175.304 1.35 135 35 0481 1.0481.75 1048175 1048 1.04 1751 1.75 04 75 1.048-1.75 106 0231 1.0231.09 1023109 1023 1.02 1097 1.09 09 1.023-1.09 6.11 611 11 25416 2.25416.558 22541655 2254 2.25 16558 16.55 25 55 2.254-16.558 16. 3.0 0 1.3196.92 131969 131 1.3 692 6.9 1.319-6.92 13.6 136 06917 1.069175.30 10691753 1.0 17530 175.3 1.069-175.30 1.0481.7 104817 104 1.7 7 1.048-1.7 10 1.0231.0 102310 102 109 1.023-1.0 6.1 61 2541 2.25416.55 2254165 225 2.2 1655 16.5 2.254-16.55 3. 1.3196.9 13196 1. 69 6. 1.319-6.9 13. 0691 1.069175.3 1069175 1753 175. 1.069-175.3 1.0481. 10481 1.048-1. 1.0231. 10231 1.023-1. 2.25416.5 225416 2. 165 2.254-16.5 1.3196. 1.319-6. 1.069175. 106917 1.069-175. 1.0481 1.048-1 1.0231 1.023-1 2.25416. 22541 2.254-16. 1.3196 1.319-6 1.069175 10691 1.069-175 1.048- 1.023- 2.25416 2.254-16 1.319- 1.06917 1.069-17 2.2541 2.254-1 1.0691 1.069-1 2.254- 1.069-
Esses resultados destacaram a necessidade de uma abordagem multifacetada direcionada a pacientes susceptíveis. pósaguda pós aguda PACS, (PACS inglês postacute post acute COVID19 19 COVID-1 syndrome correlacionálos correlacioná los consecutivos COVID19, 19, 9 cega clínico comorbidades ansiedade póstraumático traumático 5 5% 48 idade 5914 59 14 59±1 anos 675 67 67,5 masculino 223 22 3 22,3 mecânica dispneia, dispneia (dispneia cansaçofadiga cansaço fadiga cansaço/fadiga peito 163 16 16,3% OR 3,023 3023 023 IC95 IC 1,3196,929, 13196929 1,319 6,929 , 1 319 6 929 1,319-6,929) 13,689 13689 13 689 1,069175,304, 1069175304 1,069 175,304 069 175 304 1,069-175,304) 1,355 1355 355 1,0481,751 10481751 1,048 1,751 048 751 1,048-1,751 1,060 1060 060 1,0231,097 10231097 1,023 1,097 097 1,023-1,097 6,110 6110 110 2,25416,558. 225416558 2,254 16,558 . 2 254 558 2,254-16,558) multifatoriais trombóticos susceptíveis COVID1 COVID- 4 591 59± 67, 22, 16,3 3,02 302 02 IC9 3196 1,3196,929 1319692 1319 1,31 6929 6,92 31 92 1,319-6,929 13,68 1368 68 069175 1,069175,304 106917530 1069 1,06 175304 175,30 06 17 30 1,069-175,304 1,35 135 35 0481 1,0481,75 1048175 1048 1,04 1751 1,75 04 75 1,048-1,75 106 0231 1,0231,09 1023109 1023 1,02 1097 1,09 09 1,023-1,09 6,11 611 11 25416 2,25416,558 22541655 2254 2,25 16558 16,55 25 55 2,254-16,558 16, 3,0 0 1,3196,92 131969 131 1,3 692 6,9 1,319-6,92 13,6 136 06917 1,069175,30 10691753 1,0 17530 175,3 1,069-175,30 1,0481,7 104817 104 1,7 7 1,048-1,7 10 1,0231,0 102310 102 109 1,023-1,0 6,1 61 2541 2,25416,55 2254165 225 2,2 1655 16,5 2,254-16,55 3, 1,3196,9 13196 1, 69 6, 1,319-6,9 13, 0691 1,069175,3 1069175 1753 175, 1,069-175,3 1,0481, 10481 1,048-1, 1,0231, 10231 1,023-1, 2,25416,5 225416 2, 165 2,254-16,5 1,3196, 1,319-6, 1,069175, 106917 1,069-175, 1,0481 1,048-1 1,0231 1,023-1 2,25416, 22541 2,254-16, 1,3196 1,319-6 1,069175 10691 1,069-175 1,048- 1,023- 2,25416 2,254-16 1,319- 1,06917 1,069-17 2,2541 2,254-1 1,0691 1,069-1 2,254- 1,069-

This investigation describes the synthesis of eugenol analogs presenting 1,2,3-triazole fragments and evaluation of their antileishmanial activity. The alkylation of guaiacol (1) with allyl bromide afforded 1-(allyloxy)-2-methoxybenzene (2) (93% yield). The Claisen rearrangement conducted with 1 gave ortho eugenol (3) (82% yield). Alkylation procedures performed with 3 produced 1-allyl-3-methoxy-2-(prop-2-yn-1-yloxy)benzene (4) (73% yield) and 1-allyl-3-methoxy-2-(pent-4-yn-1-yloxy)benzene (6) (53% yield). The copper(I)-catalyzed alkyne-azide cycloaddition (CuAAC) reactions involving alkynes 4 and 6 with different benzylic azides afforded twenty-two eugenol analogs with 1,2,3-triazole functionalities (48-93% yield). We screened the compounds at 10 μmol L 1 against Leishmania braziliensis intracellular amastigotes during macrophage infection. The action of these compounds was compared with the known leishmanicidal drug amphotericin B. None of the analogs were toxic to macrophages at 10 μmol L-1. The cytotoxic concentration at 50% (CC50), effective concentration at 50% (EC50), and selectivity index (SI) were determined to the best compounds 4-((2-allyl-6-methoxy)phenoxymethyl)-1-(4-chlorobenzyl)-1 H-1,2,3-triazole (8c) and 4-((2-allyl-6-methoxy)phenoxymethyl)-1-(4-trifluoromethoxybenzyl)-1 H-1,2,3-triazole (8h). They showed a significant leishmanicidal effect, with EC50 of 28.09 µmol L-1 (8c) and 52.03 µmol L-1 (8h). The SIs were 9.7 for 8c and > 5.7 for 8h. These compounds have the potential as new leishmanicidal agents against L. braziliensis and may represent a starting point for the development of alternative treatments for cutaneous leishmaniasis. 1,2,3triazole 123triazole triazole 1,2,3 2 activity (1 1allyloxy2methoxybenzene allyloxymethoxybenzene allyloxy methoxybenzene (2 93% 93 (93 yield. yield . Abstract Dams are one of the main threats to Neotropical potamodromous fish, causing blockages of migratory routes and loss of breeding areas in an increasing number of drainage systems. In this scenario, current data argue that the maintenance of free-flowing tributaries along fragmented watersheds would be an important strategy to the migratory fish conservation, both in panmixia situations and in scenarios with different coexisting stocks, as already reported for Prochilodus lineatus. This study analyzed microsatellite loci and mitochondrial haplotypes in samples of P. lineatus obtained in different years along the Cinzas River basin, as well as in the Capivara Reservoir (largest Reservoir in the Paranapanema main channel, upper Paraná River) and in the Tibagi River, all connected by free stretches, aiming to investigate the contributions of the Cinzas River basin to the population dynamics of migratory fish in the Capivara reservoir region. Both markers detected high genetic diversity levels and indicated different genetic stocks of P. lineatus along the Cinzas River basin, suggesting some temporal genetic structuring, as well as the mixture of these stocks in the sample from the Capivara reservoir and from other points, corroborating the relationships among stocks in this reservoir and its tributaries. systems scenario freeflowing flowing conservation P largest channel stretches region structuring points
Abstract Objective: To describe fluid resuscitation practices in Brazilian intensive care units and to compare them with those of other countries participating in the Fluid-TRIPS. Methods: This was a prospective, international, cross-sectional, observational study in a convenience sample of intensive care units in 27 countries (including Brazil) using the Fluid-TRIPS database compiled in 2014. We described the patterns of fluid resuscitation use in Brazil compared with those in other countries and identified the factors associated with fluid choice. Results: On the study day, 3,214 patients in Brazil and 3,493 patients in other countries were included, of whom 16.1% and 26.8% (p < 0.001) received fluids, respectively. The main indication for fluid resuscitation was impaired perfusion and/or low cardiac output (Brazil: 71.7% versus other countries: 56.4%, p < 0.001). In Brazil, the percentage of patients receiving crystalloid solutions was higher (97.7% versus 76.8%, p < 0.001), and 0.9% sodium chloride was the most commonly used crystalloid (62.5% versus 27.1%, p < 0.001). The multivariable analysis suggested that the albumin levels were associated with the use of both crystalloids and colloids, whereas the type of fluid prescriber was associated with crystalloid use only. Conclusion: Our results suggest that crystalloids are more frequently used than colloids for fluid resuscitation in Brazil, and this discrepancy in frequencies is higher than that in other countries. Sodium chloride (0.9%) was the crystalloid most commonly prescribed. Serum albumin levels and the type of fluid prescriber were the factors associated with the choice of crystalloids or colloids for fluid resuscitation.

Abstract ZnO-NPs can be obtained through various methods, resulting in nanoparticles with different size and morphology, which directly influences their antimicrobial potential. The objective of this work was to evaluate the antibacterial activity of ZnO-NPs obtained by a solochemical process against important human foodborne pathogens: Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella Typhimurium, Bacillus cereus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. ZnO-NPs were identified as nanorods with the length between 90.1 and 100 nm (10.5 % frequency), the diameter between 80.1 and 90 nm (21 % frequency), and wurtzite type crystalline structure. The Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) were equal to 0.05 mg mL-1 and 0.5 mg mL-1 for S. aureus and S. Typhimurium, respectively, lower than previous results related in the literature. ZnO-NPs produced by solochemical method had a superior antibacterial activity. For instance, they can be incorporated in packaging materials for increasing microbial safety and food shelf-life by inhibiting bacterial growth.

Abstract Supplying food to growing human populations without depleting natural resources is a challenge for modern human societies. Considering this, the present study has addressed the use of native arboreal species as sources of food for rural populations in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. The aim was to reveal species composition of edible plants, as well as to evaluate the practices used to manage and conserve them. Ethnobotanical indices show the importance of many native trees as local sources of fruits while highlighting the preponderance of the Myrtaceae family. Conservation analysis allowed to identify Campomanesia hirsuta Gardner and Plinia edulis (Vell.) Sobral as being of high Biological Value and Conservation Priority. In spite of that, the local management practices of native fruits appear to be sustainable and contribute to the maintenance and dissemination of valuable species. These results suggest a number of recommended future conservation actions and show the potential of Myrtaceae species for future agronomical development in Neotropical regions.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

OBJECTIVES: There is a high incidence of intestinal parasite infection in urban areas in the Northeast of Brazil. Giardia lamblia infections have been associated with increased prevalence of cutaneous allergies and gastrointestinal disorders. However, little is known about the relationship between giardiasis and allergic diseases of the airways. The present study aimed to investigate the possible association between respiratory allergic diseases and infections by G. lamblia in children from urban areas. METHODS: This study recruited 110 patients of both sexes aged 5-15 years. Patients were administered a questionnaire evaluating clinical symptoms and were given skin tests, parasite tests and serum tests. RESULTS: A high incidence of G. lamblia was observed (45%, 50/110). Infections by this protozoan were not associated with increased risk of respiratory allergy (p = 0.075), high total IgE levels (p = 0.701), positive specific IgE tests (p = 0.250), or positive skin tests for a range of environmental allergens (p = 0.239). CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated that symptoms of asthma, skin allergy and serum markers were not associated with G. lamblia infections in this sample of children from urban areas.

The objective of this study was to develop a rapid multimetric index using benthic macrofauna as bioindicators of ecological conditions for the upper reaches of the Piabanha-Paquequer-Preto Basin located in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. A total of 33698 macroinvertebrates were collected in 27 sites. Benthic macroinvertebrates were sampled using the multi-habitat method that consists in sampling 20 m² of substrate collected in approximate proportion to the representation of all major habitat types in the reach. A subsampling procedure was used. The main steps followed to develop and test the index were: exclusion of unsuitable metrics using box-whisker plots, considering the degree of overlapping among interquartile limits (1º-3º) and confirmed by Mann-Whitney U test (p < 0.05) using six reference rivers and six impaired rivers. From all the candidate potential metrics, 36 were considered suitable. After identifying redundant metrics, through Spearman correlation analysis, and considering practical application criteria, six core metrics were selected to compose the Piabanha-Paquequer-Preto Multimetric Index (PPPMI) using the continuous method: Family richness, Shannon-Wiener family diversity, EPT family richness, %Diptera, %MOLD (Mollusca + Diptera) and %Collectors. The sensitivity of the index was tested in 15 rivers using a Principal Components Analysis (PCA) of the six environmental variables. The first axis of the PCA was highly correlated to the PPPMI scores (r = 0.703, p < 0.001). The PPPMI responded to a set of environmental variables associated to a gradient of human disturbance affecting the ecological condition of the waterbodies. This indicates that the PPPMI is an effective tool for biological monitoring and decision making in the hydrographic region of the Piabanha-Paquequer-Preto rivers.

The antimicrobial susceptibility of 212 Salmonella strains isolated from patients and foods was evaluated and 45% were found to be resistant to nalidixic acid. Nalidixic acid resistant strains showed a higher minimal inhibitory concentration for ciprofloxacin than sensitive strains. During the study an increase of strains with reduced susceptibility to ciprofloxacin was also observed.

OBJECTIVE: To perform a comparative analysis of the six-minute walk test in healthy children and adolescents in corridors of 30.5m (100 feet) 20m (65.6 feet) in length. METHODS: We evaluated 67 participants (36 boys and 31 girls), aged 7 to 14 years old, from public schools of a city in a metropolitan area. All were submitted to four walking tests, two in each of the corridors. The variables analyzed were: walked distance, work rate, mean blood pressure, heart rate and oxygen saturation. Statistical analysis was performed using one-way ANOVA for repeated measures and significance level at p<0.05. RESULTS: The comparison between the tests in each corridor and between the best tests in the different corridors did not show significant differences in the blood pressure, heart rate and oxygen saturation. The walked distance was not statistically different in the two tests on each corridor. However, the participants covered greater distances on the 30.5m corridor (p<0.05) compared to the best test between corridors. However, this increase was less than 10%. Regarding the cardiac overload and the work rate, there were no significant differences between the corridors. CONCLUSIONS: There were differences in walked distance between the corridors, however they were less than 10% with no significant changes in the other measured parameters. Therefore, the 20m corridor had a good reproducibility for the population of this study.
