ABSTRACT: The cryopreservation of plant germplasm at ultralow temperatures is an alternative technique for the long-term storage of seeds of the genus Coffea sp. However, for this technique to be successful, cell integrity must be maintained at all stages of the process on the basis of scientific research. The present study investigated validated cryopreservation protocols for Coffea arabica L. seeds and evaluate the effects on the physiological and biochemical characteristics of the seeds at each stage of the process. Seeds were dried on silica gel or with saturated saline solution, precooled or not in a biofreezer, immersed in nitrogen, and reheated in a water bath. After each of these steps, the physiological and biochemical quality of the seeds was determined. Pre-cooling is a step that can be dispensed with in the cryopreservation of Coffea arabica seeds, direct immersion in liquid nitrogen being more indicated. Coffea arabica L. seeds tolerate cryopreservation after rapid drying in silica gel up to water contents of 17 or 20% (wb), with greater survival at 17%. ABSTRACT Processing residues are still one of the main obstacles in the fishing industry due to waste and environmental impact. With that, ways of reusing these residues are researched to generate new products with different applications. The objective of this work was to develop and evaluate protein films obtained from mechanically separated meat (MSM) of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) filleting residues. To get the films, the casting technique was used, varying their composition in relation to the amount of protein (1.0, 1.5 and 2.0%) and glycerol (0.0, 0.1 and 0.2%), creating a 32 factorial plan, with 9 treatments. The films were characterized in terms of color, opacity, water solubility, mechanical properties and water vapor permeability (WVP). In the end, a yield of 18.70% of Nile tilapia myofibrillar proteins (MPs) and a post-lyophilization protein content of 87.33% were obtained. ABSTRACT Wild birds have great prominence in the transmission of diseases to humans, mainly due to their ease of access to human populations, raising concerns about the potential impact of that proximity on public health. The present study reports ARV and PBV occurrence in wild birds from an environmental protection area in the Amazon biome, in Pará state, Brazil. We obtained 155 fecal specimens from 47 species of wild birds for RNA extraction, ARV and PBV detection utilizing molecular methods, nucleotide sequencing, and phylogenetic analysis. ARV prevalence was 0.6% (1/155), being positive in an individual of Myrmotherula longipennis, and PBV prevalence was 1.29% (2/155), affecting two individuals of Guira guira. The PBV strains were assigned to genogroup I based on phylogenetic analysis, and they shared a strong phylogenetic link with strains isolated from different geographic locations. The ARV strain was more closely related to strains that had previously circulated in the same region. The presence of ARV and PBV in this habitat suggests that infection cycles of these agents occur naturally in the wild ecosystem, potentially triggering transmission events between bird species and humans. RESUMO As aves silvestres têm grande destaque na transmissão de doenças ao homem, principalmente pela facilidade de acesso à população humana, levantando preocupações sobre o potencial impacto dessa proximidade no contexto da saúde pública. O presente estudo relata a ocorrência de ARV e PBV em aves silvestres de uma área de proteção ambiental no bioma Amazônico. ABSTRACT Some scientific evidence shows that military personnel, including lifeguard firefighters, with high levels of physical fitness may be able to perform their work tasks more efficiently and make the best decisions. The present work aimed to investigate the correlation between anthropometric variables and physical performance in lifeguard firefighters. The sample consisted of 105 men, lifeguard firefighters from the military fire department of the state of Rio de Janeiro. On the first visit, the following procedures were performed: a) completion of the par-Q and the Informed Consent Form; b) anthropometric and body composition measurements. On the second visit, the following tests were performed: 1) 20-meter sprint; 2) zigzag COD; 3) Running Anaerobic Sprint Test. Positive correlations were observed between abdominal perimeter and time in the 20-meter sprint, time in the zig-zag COD, total time in the Running Anaerobic Sprint Test; between waist-to-hip ratio and time in the 20-meter sprint, total time in the Running Anaerobic Sprint Test. Furthermore, negative correlations were observed between abdominal perimeter and velocity in the 20-meter sprint, velocity in the zig-zag COD; between waist-to-hip ratio and speed in the 20-meter sprint. However, no correlations were observed between the perimeter of the abdomen and the fatigue index; between waist-to-hip ratio and zig-zag time and speed COD, fatigue index. it was verified that, in lifeguard firefighters, high scores of abdominal circumference and waist-to-hip ratio negatively influence physical performance.

RESUMO Algumas evidências mostram que militares, dentre eles os bombeiros guarda-vidas, com elevados níveis de aptidão física podem ser capazes de executar suas tarefas laborais com maior eficiência e tomar as melhores decisões. O objetivo do presente trabalho foi investigar a correlação entre variáveis antropométricas e desempenho físico, em bombeiros guarda-vidas. A amostra foi composta por 105 homens, bombeiros guarda-vidas do corpo de bombeiros militares do estado do Rio de Janeiro. Foram observadas correlações positivas entre perímetro do abdômen e tempo no sprint de 20 metros, tempo no zig zag COD, tempo total no Running Anaerobic Sprint Test; entre relação cintura quadril e tempo no sprint de 20 metros, tempo total no Running Anaerobic Sprint Test. Além do mais, foram observadas correlações negativas entre perímetro do abdômen e velocidade no sprint de 20 metros, velocidade no zig zag COD; entre relação cintura quadril e velocidade no sprint de 20 metros. Entretanto, não foram observadas correlações entre perímetro do abdômen e índice de fadiga; entre relação cintura quadril e tempo e velocidade no zig zag COD, índice de fadiga. Resumo Objetivo: Identificar quais tipos de reações de pele e ingredientes do brinquedo slime estão frequentemente envolvidos em relatos de intoxicação. Fontes de dados: Entre janeiro e julho de 2021, ocorreu a seleção dos artigos, utilizando-se as bases de dados: United States National Library of Medicine (PubMed), Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO) e Literatura Latino-Americana e do Caribe em Ciências da Saúde (LILACS). Foram utilizados os seguintes descritores: (dermatitis OR rash OR eczema OR inflammation) AND slime. Incluíram-se artigos disponíveis na íntegra, em português, inglês ou espanhol, publicados entre janeiro de 2000 e 31 julho de 2021, que relatassem casos de crianças e adolescentes que apresentaram reação cutânea após a manipulação do brinquedo slime. Foram excluídos artigos sem aderência ao tema e textos duplicados nas bases de dados. Síntese dos dados: Identificaram-se 65 publicações, sendo 16 utilizadas para a elaboração desta revisão. Isso resultou no total de 22 crianças (duas do sexo masculino, 20 do feminino), com idades entre quatro e 13 anos, que teriam sido intoxicadas por slime, a maioria dos casos ligado a preparações caseiras. Estudos relataram a ocorrência de dermatite de contato ou alérgica nas mãos, dedos, unhas, antebraços e bochechas. Os ingredientes mais alergênicos e/ou irritantes foram detergentes líquidos e sabão. Ademais, o patch test identificou reações positivas para metilisotiazolinona e metilcloroisotiazolinona, que são conservantes utilizados em produtos como cola, sabão, detergente, etc. Conclusões: Ainda que o brinquedo slime seja importante para o desenvolvimento motor e das relações parentais, receitas caseiras incluem vários ingredientes alergênicos e irritantes, que podem ser expostos a crianças vulneráveis e causar intoxicações. Sendo assim, as preparações do slime devem ser feitas com cautela e sob supervisão de adultos.

Abstract Objective: The aim of this study was to identify which types of skin reactions are associated with slime toys and which of their ingredients are most frequently involved in cases of poisoning. Data source: Between January and July 2021, articles were selected using PubMed, SciELO, and LILACS databases. The following descriptors were used: (dermatitis OR rash OR eczema OR inflammation) AND slime. Inclusion criteria were articles available in full, in either Portuguese, English, or Spanish, published between January 2000 and July 31, 2021, and articles reporting cases of contact dermatitis or eczema potentially or directly attributed to slime toys. Articles not meeting these criteria and duplicate texts in the databases were excluded. Data synthesis: In total, 65 publications were identified, of which 16 were included in this review. This resulted in a total of 22 children (2 males, 20 females), aged between 4 and 13 years, who were reportedly intoxicated by slime toys, most of these being linked to homemade preparations. Studies reported the occurrence of contact or allergic dermatitis on hands, fingers, nails, forearms, and cheeks. The most allergenic and/or irritant ingredients included liquid detergent and soap. Additionally, patch tests identified positive reactions to methylisothiazolinone and methylchloroisothiazolinone, the preservatives used by chemical industries on preparation of glue, soap, detergents, etc. Conclusions: Although slime toys might be important for improving motor development and parental relationships, homemade slime toy recipes include several allergenic and irritant ingredients which might be exposed to vulnerable children and cause intoxications. Therefore, homemade slime toys preparations should be used cautiously and under the supervision of adults.

A experiência de trabalhar no enfrentamento da Covid-19, em meio a um processo tenso, contraditório e com repercussões na própria saúde, constitui o contexto desta pesquisa, que tem o objetivo de entender o trabalho de Enfermagem na experiência de enfermeira(o)s da linha de frente contra a Covid-19, em Alagoas, Brasil. Trata-se de pesquisa qualitativa, com análise de conteúdo das histórias orais temáticas de seis enfermeiras que atuaram na linha de frente das cidades de Arapiraca e Maceió, estado de Alagoas, Brasil. As categorias temáticas que se destacaram na análise foram: desvalorização; ausência de estrutura física e de recursos para o trabalho; vínculo precário de trabalho; e relação entre sobrecarga, adoecimento e desgaste. Constatou-se que essas categorias compõem o que tem sido chamado de precarização do trabalho, já estabelecida anteriormente, mas amplificada na pandemia, a exemplo da experiência das trabalhadoras de Enfermagem.

La experiencia de trabajar en el enfrentamiento de la Covid-19, en el medio de un proceso tenso, contradictorio, con repercusiones sobre la propia salud, constituye el contexto de esta investigación, con el objetivo de entender el trabajo de enfermería en la experiencia de enfermeros(as) de la línea de frente contra la Covid-19, en Alagoas, Brasil. Se trata de una investigación cualitativa con análisis del contenido de las historias orales temáticas de 6 enfermeras que actuaron en la línea de frente en las ciudades de Arapiraca y Maceió, estado de Alagoas, Brasil. Las categorías temáticas que se destacaron en el análisis fueron: desvalorización, ausencia de estructura física y recursos para el trabajo, vínculo precario de trabajo y relación entre sobrecarga, ponerse enfermo y desgaste. Se constató que esas categorías componen lo que se ha denominado de precarización del trabajo, ya establecida anteriormente, pero amplificada en la pandemia, a ejemplo de la experiencia de las trabajadoras de enfermería.

The experience of working in the confrontation of Covid-19, amid tension, contradictions and impacts in the workers’ health constitutes the context of this research, with the objective of understanding the nursing work in the experience of frontline nurses against Covid-19, in Alagoas, Brazil. This is a qualitative research, using content analysis of the thematic oral histories of 6 nurses, who worked on the frontline in the cities of Arapiraca and Maceió, state of Alagoas, Brazil. The thematic categories emerging from the analysis were: devaluation; lack of physical structure and resources for work; precarious work bond; and the relationship between overload, illness, and wear and tear. It was found that these categories are encompassed by the term work precarization, previously established, but amplified in the pandemic, following the experience of nursing workers.

ABSTRACT Background: Chagas disease (CD) is caused by Trypanosoma cruzi and transmitted by triatomines. Historical information from the 20th century demonstrates T. cruzi records in the metropolitan region of Salvador (MRS), the third largest urban agglomeration in the Brazilian Northeast and the eighth largest in Brazil, an area with intense migratory activity from CD-endemic regions. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate CD indicators (prevalence and mortality) in the MRS. Methods: A mixed ecological and descriptive study was conducted using secondary data. We analyzed data from 2008 to 2015: deaths due to CD, self-reported cases of CD, and blood donors that were non-negative for T. cruzi infection. Results: São Francisco do Conde was one of the municipalities with the highest mortality rates due to CD. The seroprevalence rates varied by year and municipality; those with the highest values were 2008: Vera Cruz, 2009: Mata de São João, 2010: Dias D'Ávila, 2011 and 2015: São Francisco do Conde, 2012: São Sebastião do Passé, and 2013 and 2014: Pojuca. Spatial correlations between the municipalities were not detected. Conclusions: We conclude that CD is present in the MRS. The indicators analyzed in the MRS are below-state-level data. Given the importance of indicator analysis for the surveillance and control of CD at the state and national levels, it is important to strengthen the surveillance program at the municipal level, including the regions classified as low risk for T. cruzi vector transmission. ABSTRACT The southwest region of the Goiás state, Brazil, is suitable for several agricultural activities, even in more fragile soils such as Typic Quartzipsamments. This study aimed to evaluate the carbon stocks and lability of a Typic Quartzipsamment under land use and management systems in southwestern Goiás. The experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design and consisted of areas subjected to five land use and management systems [native Cerrado vegetation (Brazilian Savanna), pasture under intensive grazing, pasture under extensive grazing, soybean and maize rotation, and eucalyptus]. Soil samples were collected at the 0-0.1 and 0.1-0.2 m layers. The land use and management systems affected the carbon stocks and quality. In the 0-0.2 m layer, the carbon stocks ranged between 15.9 and 29.2 Mg ha−1. The areas with eucalyptus and under intensive grazing promoted increases in the carbon stocks that ranged between 72 and 84 %, when compared to the areas with Cerrado vegetation and soybean and maize rotation. The carbon contents in the F1, F2 and F4 fractions were higher in the areas with eucalyptus and under intensive grazing. RESUMO O sudoeste do estado de Goiás apresenta elevada vocação para diversas atividades agropecuárias, mesmo em solos considerados mais frágeis, como os Neossolos Quartzarênicos. Objetivou-se avaliar os estoques e a labilidade de carbono em sistemas de uso e manejo de um Neossolo Quartzarênico, no sudoeste goiano. Utilizou-se delineamento inteiramente causualizado, constando de áreas submetidas a cinco sistemas de uso e manejo do solo (Cerrado nativo, pastagem intensiva, pastagem extensiva, plantio de soja com sucessão de milho, e eucalipto). Foram coletadas amostras nas profundidades de 0-0,1 e 0,1-0,2 m. Os sistemas de uso e manejo do solo alteraram os estoques e a qualidade do carbono. Na camada de 0-0,2 m, os estoques de carbono variaram entre 15,9 e 29,2 Mg ha−1. As áreas com eucalipto e sob pastejo intensivo proporcionaram incrementos variando entre 72 e 84 % nos estoques de carbono, em relação às áreas de Cerrado e soja-milho. Abstract The aim of the present study was to analyze the effect of two different types of resistance training programming (linear and daily undulating) on submaximal strength and functional capacity in elderly women. Twenty-two participants (64 ± 3 years) were randomly assigned to 2 training groups: linear programming (LP; n=12) and daily undulating programming (DUP; n =10). Functional capacity and submaximal strength (10RM) were analyzed before and after 12 weeks of resistance training. The results demonstrated improvement on strength and functional capacity after the resistance training period (p ≤ 0.05), except for the Bench Press (p = 0.30), for both groups DUP and LP. The Effect Size was, respectively, high for DUP (timed up and go test = -2.07, and timed sit test= 4.69), and high for LP (horizontal leg press = 2.35). For all other results, the effect size was trivial or small. No statistical difference was observed between programming models. The LP and DUP trainnings have similar results in increasing submaximal muscle strength in elderly women inexperienced in RT after 12 weeks of intervention (p ≤ 0,05). However, DUP appears to be more effective in increasing functional capacity. In practice, the professional can use both the LP and the DUP to improve the level of fitness in the early stages of training in this population. Vinte e duas participantes (64 ± 3 anos) foram randomizados em 2 grupos experimentais: programação linear (PL; n=12) e programação ondulatória diária (POD; n=10). ABSTRACT There is a consensus that the antifungal repertoire for the treatment of cryptococcal infections is limited. Standard treatment involves the administration of an antifungal drug derived from natural sources (i.e., amphotericin B) and two other drugs developed synthetically (i.e., flucytosine and fluconazole). Despite treatment, the mortality rates associated with fungal cryptococcosis are high. Amphotericin B and flucytosine are toxic, require intravenous administration, and are usually unavailable in low-income countries because of their high cost. However, fluconazole is cost-effective, widely available, and harmless with regard to its side effects. However, fluconazole is a fungistatic agent that has contributed considerably to the increase in fungal resistance and frequent relapses in patients with cryptococcal meningitis. Therefore, there is an unquestionable need to identify new alternatives or adjuvants to conventional drugs for the treatment of cryptococcosis. A potential antifungal agent should be able to kill cryptococci and “bypass” the virulence mechanism of the yeast. Abstract It has been observed, In the midst of the increasing use of the Internet in various spheres of life, the existence of academic research guidance services on social networks. By reflecting on the possible contradictions and effects that this practice can bring to Brazilian science, this study aimed to analyze the profiles of researchers who offer academic guidance on the social network Instagram. The research has an exploratory character, with a qualitative approach, performing the content analysis of the messages present in the bio of the profiles of the referred social network and supported by the Marxist social theory. Resumo Em meio ao uso cada vez maior da Internet nas várias esferas da vida, constatou-se a existência da oferta de serviços de orientação de pesquisas acadêmicas nas redes sociais. Ao refletir acerca das possíveis contradições e efeitos que essa prática pode trazer à ciência brasileira, este estudo definiu, como objetivo, analisar os perfis de pesquisadores que oferecem orientação acadêmica na rede social Instagram. A pesquisa tem caráter exploratório, com abordagem qualitativa, realizando a análise de conteúdo das mensagens presentes na bio dos perfis da referida rede social e sustentada na teoria social marxista. Constatou-se a maior presença de pesquisadores do gênero feminino, ligados às áreas das ciências humanas e sociais, desempregados, com vínculos empregatícios temporários ou, exclusivamente, empreendedores. ABSTRACT. Stress during aging is not uncommon and dysfunctional family relationships are important sources of stress in the elderly. Considering the potential stressor that family dysfunction represents, it is questioned whether prolonged exposure to dysfunctional family arrangements can contribute to cognitive decline in aging. Objective: To verify whether family dysfunction is a predictive factor of cognitive decline in aging. Methods: Secondary study with analysis of existing data from the longitudinal, population-based study “Health, Wellbeing and Aging” (SABE). Data from 791 elderly people from two cohorts of the SABE study between 2006 and 2015 were analyzed. Family dysfunction was assessed using the Apgar family instrument, while cognitive performance was assessed using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), verbal fluency (animals) and digit length in reverse order. Cognitive decline was measured by the difference in scores in the period between 2006 and 2015. Results: Approximately 10% of the sample had family dysfunction. The familial Apgar score was not associated with decline on MMSE (p=0.732), verbal fluency (p=0.852) and digit span scores (p=0.718). Scores related to cognition and family functionality, such as age, education, living alone, depression and family Apgar, do not explain cognitive decline. RESUMO. O estresse ao longo do envelhecimento não é incomum, e as relações familiares disfuncionais constituem fontes importantes de estresse nos idosos. Considerando-se o potencial estressor que a disfunção familiar representa, questiona-se se a exposição prolongada a arranjos familiares disfuncionais pode contribuir para o declínio cognitivo no envelhecimento. Objetivo: Verificar se a disfunção familiar é um fator preditivo de declínio cognitivo no envelhecimento. Métodos: Estudo secundário com análise de dados provenientes do estudo longitudinal de base populacional “Saúde, Bem-estar e Envelhecimento” (SABE). Foram analisados dados de 791 idosos de duas coortes do estudo SABE no período entre 2006 e 2015. The experience of working in the confrontation of Covid-19, amid tension, contradictions and impacts in the workers’ health constitutes the context of this research, with the objective of understanding the nursing work in the experience of frontline nurses against Covid-19, in Alagoas, Brazil. This is a qualitative research, using content analysis of the thematic oral histories of 6 nurses, who worked on the frontline in the cities of Arapiraca and Maceió, state of Alagoas, Brazil. The thematic categories emerging from the analysis were: devaluation; lack of physical structure and resources for work; precarious work bond; and the relationship between overload, illness, and wear and tear. It was found that these categories are encompassed by the term work precarization, previously established, but amplified in the pandemic, following the experience of nursing workers. Abstract Background Despite no evidence showing benefits of hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine with or without azithromycin for COVID-19 treatment, these medications have been largely prescribed in Brazil. Objectives To assess outcomes, including in-hospital mortality, electrocardiographic abnormalities, hospital length-of-stay, admission to the intensive care unit, and need for dialysis and mechanical ventilation, in hospitalized COVID-19 patients who received chloroquine or hydroxychloroquine, and to compare outcomes between those patients and their matched controls. Methods A retrospective multicenter cohort study that included consecutive laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 patients from 37 Brazilian hospitals from March to September 2020. Propensity score was used to select matching controls by age, sex, cardiovascular comorbidities, and in-hospital use of corticosteroid. A p-value <0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results From 7,850 COVID-19 patients, 673 (8.6%) received hydroxychloroquine and 67 (0.9%) chloroquine. The median age in the study group was 60 years (46 - 71) and 59.1% were women. During hospitalization, 3.2% of patients presented side effects and 2.2% required therapy discontinuation. Electrocardiographic abnormalities were more prevalent in the chloroquine/hydroxychloroquine group (13.2% vs. 8.2%, p=0.01), and the long corrected QT interval was the main difference (3.6% vs. 0.4%, p<0.001). The median hospital length of stay was longer in the HCQ/CQ + AZT group than in controls (9.0 [5.0, 18.0] vs. 8.0 [4.0, 14.0] days). There was no statistical differences between groups in intensive care unit admission (35.1% vs. 32.0%; p=0.282), invasive mechanical ventilation support (27.0% vs. 22.3%; p=0.074) or mortality (18.9% vs. 18.0%; p=0.682). Conclusion COVID-19 patients treated with chloroquine or hydroxychloroquine had a longer hospital length of stay, when compared to matched controls. Resumo Fundamento Apesar da ausência de evidência mostrando benefícios da hidroxicloroquina e da cloroquina combinadas ou não à azitromicina no tratamento da covid-19, esses medicamentos têm sido amplamente prescritos no Brasil. Objetivos Avaliar desfechos, incluindo moralidade hospitalar, alterações eletrocardiográficas, tempo de internação, admissão na unidade de terapia intensiva, e necessidade de diálise e de ventilação mecânica em pacientes hospitalizados com covid-19 que receberam cloroquina ou hidroxicloroquina, e comparar os desfechos entre aqueles pacientes e seus controles pareados. Métodos Estudo multicêntrico retrospectivo do tipo coorte que incluiu pacientes com diagnóstico laboratorial de covid-19 de 37 hospitais no Brasil de março a setembro de 2020. Escore de propensão foi usado para selecionar controles pareados quanto a idade, sexo, comorbidades cardiovasculares, e uso de corticosteroides durante a internação. Um valor de p<0,05 foi considerado estatisticamente significativo. Resultados Dos 7850 pacientes com covid-19, 673 (8,6%) receberam hidroxicloroquina e 67 (0,9%) cloroquina.
