ABSTRACT Lead is a heavy metal and an important cause of acute or chronic toxicosis in humans, domestic, and wild animals. This report aims to describe a case of chronic lead poisoning in a jaguar (Panthera onca) kept under human care that was rescued from the wild environment. The animal was rescued in poor condition in 2004 and kept under human care at the Belo Horizonte Zoological Garden (Minas Gerais, Brazil) until 2020, when it presented with anorexia, vomiting and ataxia. Over the past years the animal had episodes of anemia and increased serum urea and creatinine. Radiography demonstrated 21 radiopaque projectiles on the right side of the face. At necropsy there were multiple projectiles surrounded by fibrous tissue in the subcutaneous of the right side of the face, fibrinous peritonitis, multiple gastric ulcers, and melena. The lead dosage was performed using the atomic absorption spectrometry technique using renal tissue collected at necropsy, with a result of 908 ppb (µg/kg). The findings of projectiles associated with the dosage of lead above the reference limits allow the diagnosis of chronic intoxication in this case.

RESUMO Chumbo é um metal pesado e uma causa importante de toxicose crônica no homem e em animais domésticos e selvagens. Este relato teve como objetivo descrever um caso de intoxicação crônica por chumbo em uma onça-pintada (Panthera onca), mantida sob cuidados humanos, que foi resgatada de seu ambiente natural em 2004, em pobre condição corporal. O animal foi encaminhado ao zoológico de Belo Horizonte (MG, Brasil), onde permaneceu até 2020, quando desenvolveu anorexia, vômitos e ataxia. Durante os últimos anos, o animal teve episódios de anemia e aumento da concentração sérica de ureia e creatinina. O exame radiográfico demonstrou 21 projéteis radiodensos na face direita. À necropsia, foram observados vários projéteis envoltos por tecido conjuntivo no subcutâneo da face esquerda, peritonite fibrinosa, múltiplas úlceras gástricas e melena. A concentração de chumbo foi determinada por espectrometria de absorção atômica em amostras de tecido renal, indicando 908 ppb (µg/kg). O achado de projéteis de chumbo associado à elevada concentração de chumbo é compatível com intoxicação crônica por chumbo neste caso.

RESUMO Os piretroides são ectoparasiticidas com grande segurança para mamíferos, utilizados amplamente em animais de produção. Relata-se um surto de intoxicação sistêmica com dermatite irritante por contato, resultante do uso de Cipermetrina Pour-On em bovinos, no estado de Pernambuco. Oito animais adultos foram acometidos: três deles morreram na propriedade e cinco foram recebidos na Clínica de Bovinos da Universidade Federal Rural de Pernambuco, Campus Garanhuns. Todos haviam recebido 100mL de Cipermetrina Pour-On (Ectonil®, Cipermetrina, Labgard, Brasil). Observou-se apatia, hiperexcitabilidade, tremores musculares, sialorreia, bradicardia e lesões crostosas no dorso da região de pescoço, na escápula, mas orelhas, bem como ulcerações em mucosa oral e vaginal. No hemograma, verificou-se hiperfibrinogenemia e leucocitose por neutrofilia com desvio à esquerda regenerativo. Na histopatologia, foram constatadas áreas de erosão e ulceração da epiderme e infiltrado linfo-histiocitário e neutrofílico perivascular na derme superficial. O tratamento de suporte gerou melhora dos sinais sistêmicos e das lesões cutâneas, porém, em um dos animais (que esteve internado por 19 dias), não houve regressão completa das alterações neurológicas de bradicardia e de tremores musculares; mesmo assim, foi possível o retorno à atividade produtiva. Doses elevadas de Cipermetrina Pour-On podem causar intoxicação sistêmica em bovinos e resultarem em bradicardia, hiperexcitabilidade, tremores musculares e sialorreia com dermatite irritante por contato, bem como morte em casos severos.

ABSTRACT Pyrethroids are ectoparasiticides safe for mammals and widely used in farm animals. An outbreak of systemic intoxication with irritant contact dermatitis resulting from the use of cypermethrin pour on in dairy cows is reported in the state of Pernambuco. Eight adult animals were affected, three died on the property and five were referred to the Clínica de Bovinos, Universidade Federal Rural de Pernambuco, Campus Garanhuns. These received 100 mL of pour on Cypermethrin (Ectonil ®, Cipermetrina, Labgard, Brasil). Apathy, hyperexcitability, muscle tremors, sialorrhea, bradycardia and crusted lesions were observed on the dorsum of the neck, scapula, ears and ulcerations in the oral and vaginal mucosa. There was hyperfibrinogenemia and leukocytosis due to neutrophilia with a regenerative left shift. Histopathology showed areas of erosion and ulceration of the epidermis and perivascular lymphohistiocytic and neutrophilic infiltrate in the superficial dermis. Supportive treatment was done with improvement of systemic signs and skin lesions, however, in one animal (with 19 days hospitalized), there was no complete regression of neurological alterations of bradycardia and muscle tremors, even so, it was possible to return to productive activity. High doses of pour on cypermethrin may cause systemic intoxication in cattle and result in bradycardia, hyperexcitability, muscle tremors and sialorrhea with irritant contact dermatitis, and death in severe cases.

RESUMO O teratoma é uma neoplasia rara, com diferenciação em duas ou três linhagens de células germinativas. Teratomas intracranianos, em aves, são raramente relatados, principalmente, com localização cerebral. Este é o primeiro relato de teratoma cerebral em um pato-real com sinais clínicos neurológicos. A neoplasia foi caracterizada como um teratoma cerebral maduro, estendendo do cerebelo ao tronco encefálico e com um nódulo no córtex.

ABSTRACT Teratoma is a rare neoplasia with differentiation in two or three germ cell lines. Intracranial teratoma in birds has rarely been reported, especially affecting the brain. This is the first report of a brain teratoma in a mallard with neurological clinical signs. The neoplasm was characterized as a mature brain teratoma, extending from the cerebellum to the brainstem, and with one nodule in the cortex.

RESUMO O objetivo da presente pesquisa foi avaliar o efeito da inclusão de semente de linhaça na dieta sobre a qualidade seminal e o perfil metabólico de machos caprinos. Foram utilizados 16 machos da raça Saanen, distribuídos aleatoriamente em quatro grupos, recebendo níveis de inclusão de semente de linhaça (0, 4, 8 e 12%) na dieta, durante um período de 60 dias. As coletas e as avaliações seminais foram realizadas duas vezes por semana. Os animais foram submetidos a coletas quinzenais de sangue, durante todo o período experimental. Os dados foram avaliados por ANOVA e pela análise de regressão a 5% de significância. Houve comportamento cúbico para motilidade espermática progressiva, que apresentou o maior valor (82,30%) com a adição de 9,92% de semente de linhaça na dieta (P<0,05). Houve comportamento cúbico para concentração plasmática de triglicerídeos, e o nível de 8% de semente de linhaça na dieta apresentou média de 43,32mg dL-1, acima dos valores normais para a espécie caprina (P<0,05). A inclusão de semente de linhaça na dieta de machos caprinos proporcionou melhora na produção espermática e na qualidade seminal. No entanto, devem-se considerar os possíveis efeitos dos níveis superiores a 4% de semente de linhaça sobre o perfil metabólico dos animais.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate the effect of flaxseed inclusion in the diet of male goats through the semen quality and metabolic profile. Randomly allocated 16 Saanen males were placed into four groups receiving flaxseed inclusion levels (0, 4, 8 and 12%) in the diet over a period of 60 days. The collections and seminal evaluations were performed twice a week. The animals were subjected to biweekly blood collections from the beginning to the end of the trial period. The data were evaluated by ANOVA and regression analysis at 5% significance. A cubic behavior for motility, with the highest value (82.30%) with the addition of 9.92% of flaxseed in the diet (P< 0.05) was detected. A cubic behavior for plasma triglyceride concentration and the level of 8% of flaxseed in the diet averaged 43.32mg dL -1 above normal values for goats (P< 0.05) was detected. The inclusion of flaxseed in the diet of male goats improved sperm production and quality. However, one should consider the possible effects of the levels above 4% of flaxseed on the metabolic profile of the animals.

RESUMO: A dessecação da cultura do feijão destinado à produção de sementes, com a utilização de herbicidas, é uma alternativa de manejo, pois permite a colheita quando as sementes apresentam elevado vigor, germinação e massa seca, porém essa técnica pode ocasionar prejuízos às sementes. Objetivou-se com este trabalho avaliar a qualidade fisiológica de sementes de feijão, do tipo carioca, com a aplicação de doses de herbicidas dessecantes em diferentes épocas, visando a antecipação da colheita. As plantas de feijão carioca, cultivar Pérola, foram dessecadas quando as sementes apresentavam 42% e 30% de teor de água, com amonio-glufosinate, saflufenacil e diquat, nas doses de 0%, 50%, 75% e 100% em relação à dose média recomendada para dessecação, respectivamente para cada um dos herbicidas. O tratamento controle, sem aplicação do dessecante, foi colhido na mesma data das dessecações. Já o tratamento adicional, também sem aplicação do dessecante, foi colhido apenas quando as sementes apresentavam o teor de água de 18%. As variáveis analisadas foram germinação, primeira contagem de germinação, índice de velocidade de germinação, teste de frio, envelhecimento acelerado, comprimento de plântula e radícula e massa seca. Os herbicidas aplicados na primeira época (42% de água), nas maiores doses, prejudicam a qualidade fisiológica das sementes, e a colheita das sementes com teores de água de 30% e 42%, sem a utilização de dessecantes, promove elevado vigor e germinação. Resultados satisfatórios foram constatados quando se aplicou o saflufenacil na 0 época 2 (30% de água), utilizando 50% da dose média recomendada deste herbicida.

ABSTRACT: The use of herbicides for bean crop desiccation aiming seed production, is an alternative management because it allows harvesting when the seeds present high vigor, germination and dry mass, however this technique can cause damages to the seeds. The objective of this study was to evaluate the physiological quality of bean seeds, of the Carioca type, with the application of desiccant herbicides doses at different periods, aiming at the anticipation of the harvest. The bean plants, Pérola cultivar, were desiccated when the seeds had 42 and 30% water content, with ammonium glufosinate, saflufenacil and diquat at doses of 0, 50, 75 and 100% in relation to the recommended average dose for desiccation, respectively for each of the herbicides. The control treatment without desiccant application was harvested on the same date as desiccation. The additional treatment, also without desiccant application, was harvested only when the seeds had a water content of 18%. The variables analyzed were germination, first germination count, germination speed index, cold test, accelerated aging, seedling and radicle length, and dry mass. The herbicides applied in the first period (42% water), at the highest doses, impair the physiological quality of the seeds, and the seeds with water contents of 30 and 42%, without the use of desiccants, promote high vigor and germination. Satisfactory results were obtained when the saflufenacil herbicide was applied in period 2 (30% water), using 50% of the recommended average dose of this herbicide.

O estudo avalia a utilização de plantas medicinais com atividade antimicrobiana pelos usuários do Sistema Único de Saúde do município de Campina Grande- PB, Brasil. Trata-se de um estudo descritivo, transversal, com abordagem quantitativa, cuja amostra constituiu-se de 220 usuários conduzido no período de Agosto de 2008 a Janeiro de 2009. A pesquisa foi realizada através de um roteiro de entrevistas não estruturada. Dentre os participantes do estudo, 65,0% utilizavam plantas medicinais, das quais Punica granatum L., Anacardium occidentale L., e Stryphnodendron adstringens foram as mais citadas. Observou-se que houve prevalência do gênero feminino na utilização. A maioria dos indivíduos obtém plantas medicinais no comércio local utilizando-as por indicação de familiares. Foi observado que 5,0% dos entrevistados afirmam já ter sofrido algum evento adverso decorrente do uso de plantas medicinais. Assim sugere-se que as informações sobre o uso da flora medicinal adquiridas nas comunidades locais, combinadas a estudos químicos/farmacológicos realizados em laboratórios especializados e a capacitação da equipe de saúde favorecerá a implementação da Portaria nº 971/2006, que tem como objetivo a garantia de acesso a plantas medicinais e fitoterápicos com segurança, eficácia e qualidade.

This study evaluates the use of medicinal plants with antimicrobial activity by users of the Unified Health System in Campina Grande Municipality, Paraíba, Brazil. This is a descriptive and transversal study with a quantitative approach, the sample of which consisted of 220 users, and was carried out from August 2008 to April 2009. The research was developed through an unstructured interview process. Among the study participants, 65.0% used medicinal plants, of which Punica granatum L., Anacardium occidentale L. and Stryphnodendron adstringens were most cited. There was prevalence of females. Most individuals obtain medicinal plants in the local market, using them as suggested by relatives. Results indicated that 5.0% of the interviewees stated to have suffered adverse event resulting from the use of medicinal plants. Thus, information about the use of medicinal plants, acquired in local communities, combined to chemical/pharmacological studies performed in specialized laboratories and the qualification of health professionals, will favor the implementation of Decree no. 971/2006, which aims to ensure access to medicinal plants and herbal medicines with safety, efficacy and quality.

Fetal hemoglobin (HbF), encoded by the HBG2 and HBG1 genes, is the best-known genetic modulator of sickle cell anemia, varying dramatically in concentration in the blood of these patients. This variation is partially associated with polymorphisms located in the promoter region of the HBG2 and HBG1 genes. In order to explore known and unknown polymorphisms in these genes, the sequences of their promoter regions were screened in sickle cell anemia patients and correlated with both their HbF levels and their βS-globin haplotypes. Additionally, the sequences were compared with genes from 2 healthy groups, a reference one (N = 104) and an Afro-descendant one (N = 98), to identify polymorphisms linked to the ethnic background.The reference group was composed by healthy individuals from the general population. Four polymorphisms were identified in the promoter region of HBG2 and 8 in the promoter region of HBG1 among the studied groups. Four novel single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) located at positions -324, -317, -309 and -307 were identified in the reference group. A deletion located between -396 and -391 in the HBG2 promoter region and the SNP -271 C→T in the HBG1 promoter region were associated with the Central African Republic βS-globin haplotype. In contrast, the -369 C→G and 309 A→G SNPs in the HBG2 promoter region were correlated to the Benin haplotype. The polymorphisms -396_-391 del HBG2, -369 SNP HBG2 and -271 SNP HBG1 correlated with HbF levels. Hence, we suggest an important role of HBG2 and HBG1 gene polymorphisms on the HbF synthesis.

Estudou-se o efeito da redução da proteína bruta (PB) e da suplementação de aminoácidos em dietas para suínos, dos 70 aos 100kg. Foram utilizados 48 suínos machos, castrados, híbridos comerciais, com o peso inicial de 70,12±1,56kg, distribuídos em delineamento experimental de blocos ao acaso, com quatro níveis de proteína bruta na dieta, 17,95; 16,45; 14,95; 13,45, seis repetições e dois animais por unidade experimental. Não foi observado efeito dos tratamentos sobre o ganho de peso diário e sobre o consumo de dieta diário. Houve efeito quadrático dos níveis de PB sobre a conversão alimentar, que melhorou até o nível estimado de 15,7% de proteína bruta. Não houve influência dos níveis de PB sobre a espessura de toucinho e sobre o rendimento de carne magra. Conclui-se que a redução da proteína bruta na dieta de até 4,5 pontos percentuais, com suplementação de aminoácidos, para suínos na fase de terminação, não influi no consumo de dieta diário, no ganho de peso diário e nas características de carcaça. Melhor conversão alimentar foi estimada para suínos alimentados com dietas contendo 15,7% de proteína bruta.

This experiment was carried out to evaluate the influence of crude protein (CP) reduction level of diet with amino acid supplementation on performance of barrows. A total of 48 crossbred barrows, with average initial weight of 70.12±1.56kg were used. The animals were allotted in a completely randomized experimental design with four treatments, 17.95; 16.45; 14.95; 13.45%CP, six replicates and two animals per experimental unit. The barrows were fed ad libitum during the experiment. No effect of decreasing dietary CP level on feed intake and weight gain was observed. There was a quadratic effect of the CP levels on feed:gain ratio with minimum estimated value for barrows fed 15,70% CP diet. There was no effect of CP levels on backfat thickness and lean meat. Reducing CP level from 17.95 to 13.45% in barrows diet with amino acids supplementation has no harmful effect on the performance and carcass characteristics.

This review addresses the mechanisms of methylmercury (MeHg)-induced neurotoxicity, specifically examining the role of oxidative stress in mediating neuronal damage. A number of critical findings point to a central role for astrocytes in mediating MeHg-induced neurotoxicity as evidenced by the following observations: a) MeHg preferentially accumulates in astrocytes; b) MeHg specifically inhibits glutamate uptake in astrocytes; c) neuronal dysfunction is secondary to disturbances in astrocytes. The generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) by MeHg has been observed in various experimental paradigms. For example, MeHg enhances ROS formation both in vivo (rodent cerebellum) and in vitro (isolated rat brain synaptosomes), as well as in neuronal and mixed reaggregating cell cultures. Antioxidants, including selenocompounds, can rescue astrocytes from MeHg-induced cytotoxicity by reducing ROS formation. We emphasize that oxidative stress plays a significant role in mediating MeHg-induced neurotoxic damage with active involvement of the mitochondria in this process. Furthermore, we provide a mechanistic overview on oxidative stress induced by MeHg that is triggered by a series of molecular events such as activation of various kinases, stress proteins and other immediate early genes culminating in cell damage.

Glutamate receptors have been implicated in memory formation. The aim of the present study was to determine the effect of inhibitory avoidance training on specific [3H]-glutamate binding to membranes obtained from the hippocampus or parietal cortex of rats. Adult male Wistar rats were trained (0.5-mA footshock) in a step-down inhibitory avoidance task and were sacrificed 0, 5, 15 or 60 min after training. Hippocampus and parietal cortex were dissected and membranes were prepared and incubated with 350 nM [3H]-glutamate (N = 4-6 per group). Inhibitory avoidance training induced a 29% increase in glutamate binding in hippocampal membranes obtained from rats sacrificed at 5 min (P<0.01), but not at 0, 15, or 60 min after training, and did not affect glutamate binding in membranes obtained from the parietal cortex. These results are consistent with previous evidence for the involvement of glutamatergic synaptic modification in the hippocampus in the early steps of memory formation.
